Chapter 1

1.1 Chanakya

praṇamya śirasā viṣṇuṃ trailokyādhipatiṃ prabhum | nānāśāstroddhṛtaṃ vakṣye rājanītisamuccayam ||

Bowing my head to Vishnu, the mighty lord of the three worlds, I will set out a collection of the principles of statecraft, drawn from many treatises.

Meaning today and context

The book presents itself as a distillation of older learning, not one man's opinions. It begins in humility before teaching anyone else.

The opening invocation of the Chanakya Niti. Chanakya (by traditional attribution) bows to Vishnu and announces a collection of political and practical wisdom gathered from many treatises.

1.2 Chanakya

adhītyedaṃ yathāśāstraṃ naro jānāti sattamaḥ | dharmopadeśaṃ vikhyātaṃ kāryākāryaṃ śubhāśubham ||

The best of people, having studied this properly according to the teaching, comes to know the renowned instruction in dharma: what should be done and what should not, what is good and what is harmful.

Meaning today and context

Practical wisdom is meant to help you tell what to do and what to avoid. Read with care, not just for quotable lines.

Chanakya describes what a careful student of this work will gain: a clear sense of right and wrong action.

1.3 Chanakya

tadahaṃ saṃpravakṣyāmi lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā | yena vijñānamātreṇa sarvajñatvaṃ prapadyate ||

So, wishing the welfare of the world, I will explain that by merely understanding which a person attains all-round knowledge.

Meaning today and context

The aim of this teaching is the good of ordinary people. 'All-round knowledge' here means a sound grasp of how life and people work, not knowing every fact.

Chanakya states his purpose: he teaches for the good of people, and promises that understanding this teaching gives broad practical insight.

1.4 Chanakya

mūrkhaśiṣyopadeśena duṣṭastrībharaṇena ca | duḥkhitaiḥ samprayogeṇa paṇḍito'pyavasīdati ||

By teaching a foolish pupil, by supporting a wicked woman, and by close association with the wretched, even a wise person comes to grief.

'Wicked woman' reflects its time; read it as any person of harmful conduct, never as a judgement on women. 'The wretched' does not mean people who are grieving or struggling: standing by them is a duty, not a danger.

Meaning today and context

Some situations drain even capable people: pouring effort into someone who refuses to learn, or binding yourself to people whose conduct is harmful. Recognise when your effort is being wasted.

A list of three situations that drag down even a wise person: teaching a pupil who will not learn, supporting a wicked woman, and close dealings with the perpetually miserable.

1.5 Chanakya

duṣṭā bhāryā śaṭhaṃ mitraṃ bhṛtyaścottaradāyakaḥ | sasarpe ca gṛhe vāso mṛtyureva na saṃśayaḥ ||

A wicked wife, a deceitful friend, a servant who answers back, and living in a house that has a snake: this is death itself, there is no doubt.

The verse names only the wife, reflecting its time; harm in a home can come from anyone and is never to be blamed on women as such. If you are unsafe at home, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Danger close to home is the hardest to escape: a hostile partner, a false friend, an unreliable helper. Do not ignore a threat just because it lives under your roof.

Chanakya lists four situations at home that are as dangerous as death: a wicked spouse, a deceitful friend, a servant who talks back, and living in a house with a snake.

1.6 Chanakya

āpadarthe dhanaṃ rakṣeddārānrakṣeddhanairapi | ātmānaṃ satataṃ rakṣeddārairapi dhanairapi ||

Guard wealth for times of trouble; guard your wife even with your wealth; guard yourself always, even at the cost of your wife and your wealth.

Not financial advice. 'Protect yourself even over your wife' is about survival in mortal danger; it is not permission to abandon or neglect a spouse.

Meaning today and context

Savings exist for emergencies, family matters more than money, and you cannot protect anyone if you do not first stay alive and well. Look after yourself so you can look after others.

A maxim on priorities in protection: wealth is kept for hard times, family is protected even at the cost of wealth, and one's own life is to be preserved above all.

1.7 Chanakya

āpadārthe dhanaṃ rakṣecchrīmataśca kimāpadaḥ | kadāciccalitā lakṣmīḥ saṃcito'pi vinaśyati ||

Guard wealth for times of trouble. 'But what trouble does a rich man have?' Fortune is fickle, and at times even wealth that has been piled up is lost.

Not financial advice. For decisions about savings or investments, consult a qualified adviser.

Meaning today and context

No amount of money makes you safe from bad times; markets fall, businesses fail, illness comes. Keep a reserve even when things are going well.

Chanakya answers an objection to the previous verse: someone asks what trouble a rich person could ever have, and he replies that fortune is fickle.

1.8 Chanakya

yasmindeśe na sammāno na vṛttirna ca bāndhavaḥ | na ca vidyāgamo'pyasti vāsastatra na kārayet ||

In a country where there is no respect, no livelihood, no kinsfolk, and no means of gaining knowledge, one should not make one's home.

Meaning today and context

When choosing where to live or work, look beyond the salary: will you be respected, can you earn, will you have people around you, and can you keep learning?

Chanakya lists what makes a place worth living in: respect, a livelihood, relatives, and access to learning.

1.9 Chanakya

dhanikaḥ śrotriyo rājā nadī vaidyastu pañcamaḥ | pañca yatra na vidyante na tatra divasaṃ vaset ||

A man of wealth, a learned Vedic scholar, a king, a river, and fifth a physician: where these five are not found, one should not stay even a day.

Meaning today and context

In today's terms: a place needs a working economy, teachers, governance and law, water, and healthcare. These basics decide whether a family can thrive there.

Chanakya lists five things a place to live must have: people of means, a learned teacher, a ruler, a river, and a physician.

1.10 Chanakya

lokayātrā bhayaṃ lajjā dākṣiṇyaṃ tyāgaśīlatā | pañca yatra na vidyante na kuryyāttatra saṅgatim ||

A sound means of living, fear of wrongdoing, a sense of shame, courtesy, and a giving nature: where these five are not found, one should not keep company.

Meaning today and context

Good company is people who earn honestly, fear doing wrong, feel shame at bad conduct, are courteous, and give freely. Where these are missing, keep your distance.

Five qualities that make people worth associating with: a sound way of living, fear of wrongdoing, a sense of shame, courtesy, and generosity.

1.11 Chanakya

jānīyātpreṣaṇe bhṛtyānbāndhavānvyasanāgame | mitraṃ cāpattikāle tu bhāryāṃ ca vibhavakṣaye ||

Know servants when they are sent on a task, relatives when calamity comes, a friend in a time of trouble, and a wife when wealth is lost.

Meaning today and context

People show who they are when something is asked of them. Don't judge loyalty in good times; notice who stands with you when things go wrong.

Chanakya says true character is revealed under test: helpers when given a task, relatives in a crisis, friends in adversity, a spouse when wealth is gone.

1.12 Chanakya

āture vyasane prāpte durbhikṣe śatrusaṃkaṭe | rājadvāre śmaśāne ca yastiṣṭhati sa bāndhavaḥ ||

In sickness, when misfortune strikes, in famine, in danger from enemies, at the king's court, and at the cremation ground: whoever stands by you there is your true kin.

Meaning today and context

Family is not only blood. The person who sits with you in hospital, in court, in loss and at the funeral is your real kin. Try to be that person for others.

Chanakya defines a true kinsman by where he stands with you: in illness, misfortune, famine, danger from enemies, at court, and at the cremation ground.

1.13 Chanakya

yo dhruvāṇi parityajya adhruvaṃ pariṣevate | dhruvāṇi tasya naśyanti adhruvaṃ naṣṭameva hi ||

One who abandons what is certain and pursues what is uncertain loses the certain, and the uncertain is as good as lost already.

Not financial or career advice for any specific decision; change can be right when it is carefully planned.

Meaning today and context

Don't throw away a secure job, savings or a good relationship for a vague promise. Test the new thing first, and keep your footing while you do.

A warning against giving up what is certain to chase what is uncertain.

1.14 Chanakya

varayetkulajāṃ prājño virūpāmapi kanyakām | rūpaśīlāṃ na nīcasya vivāhaḥ sadṛśe kule ||

A wise man should marry a maiden of good family even if she is plain, not a beautiful one from a low family; marriage is fitting within an equal family.

Old nīti spoke of family, birth and social class. Worth comes from conduct, never from birth, caste or family background; this verse must never be used to rank or exclude anyone. A person's worth as a partner lies in character, not looks or family status.

Meaning today and context

The lasting point is that looks are a poor basis for marriage; character and shared values matter more. The idea of 'high' and 'low' families belongs to its time.

Traditional advice on marriage in its own time: a man should choose a bride from a 'good family' even if plain, rather than a beautiful one from a 'low' family, since marriage should be between equals.

1.15 Chanakya

nadīnāṃ śastrapāṇīnāṃ nakhināṃ śṛṅgiṇāṃ tathā | viśvāso naiva kartavyaḥ strīṣu rājakuleṣu ca ||

Rivers, those who carry weapons, animals with claws or horns, women, and royal families: one should never place trust in these.

This verse reflects the prejudices about women of its time. It is not the view of this app, and it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. Judge each person by their own conduct.

Meaning today and context

Respect forces that can turn dangerous without warning: floodwaters, armed people, wild animals, and the powerful. The inclusion of women reflects the prejudice of its age, not a truth.

A list of things the text says never to trust: rivers, armed men, clawed and horned animals, women, and royal households.

1.16 Chanakya

viṣādapyamṛtaṃ grāhyamamedhyādapi kāñcanam | nīcādapyuttamāṃ vidyāṃ strīratnaṃ duṣkulādapi ||

Take nectar even from poison, gold even from filth, the highest knowledge even from a lowly person, and a jewel of a woman even from a humble family.

This verse reflects the prejudices about women of its time. It is not the view of this app, and it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. Judge each person by their own conduct. Old nīti spoke of family, birth and social class. Worth comes from conduct, never from birth, caste or family background; this verse must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Good knowledge is worth learning from anyone, whatever their status. The lines on 'low' persons and on taking a woman as a 'jewel' reflect the hierarchy and attitudes of its time.

A maxim on taking what is valuable wherever it is found, ending with a line about taking a 'jewel of a woman' even from a lowly family.

1.17 Chanakya

strīṇāṃ dviguṇa āhāro lajjā cāpi caturguṇā | sāhasaṃ ṣaḍguṇaṃ caiva kāmaścāṣṭaguṇaḥ smṛtaḥ ||

Women are said to have twice the appetite, four times the modesty, six times the daring, and eight times the desire.

This verse reflects the prejudices about women of its time. It is not the view of this app, and it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. Judge each person by their own conduct.

Meaning today and context

This is a stereotype of its age, not a fact about women. It is included so that the text is complete, not as counsel.

A generalisation about women, comparing them to men in appetite, modesty, daring and desire.
