Chapter 2

2.1 Chanakya

anṛtaṃ sāhasaṃ māyā mūrkhatvamatilobhitā | aśaucatvaṃ nirdayatvaṃ strīṇāṃ doṣāḥ svabhāvajāḥ ||

Untruthfulness, rashness, deceit, foolishness, excessive greed, impurity and pitilessness: these are the faults of women, born of their nature.

This verse reflects the prejudices about women of its time. It is not the view of this app, and it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. Judge each person by their own conduct.

Meaning today and context

This is a prejudice of its age, not a truth about women. Every fault in this list is found in men and women alike, and each person should be judged by their own conduct.

A generalisation listing faults the text calls 'natural' to women.

2.2 Chanakya

bhojyaṃ bhojanaśaktiśca ratiśaktirvarāṅganā | vibhavo dānaśaktiśca nā'lpasya tapasaḥ phalam ||

Food to eat and the strength to digest it, vigour and a lovely partner, wealth and the will to give: these are the fruit of no small austerity.

Meaning today and context

Having something and being able to enjoy or use it well are two different blessings. If you have both, health with food, wealth with a generous heart, be grateful; it is rarer than it seems.

Chanakya lists pairs of blessings that rarely come together: having good things and also the capacity to enjoy or use them well.

2.3 Chanakya

yasya putro vaśībhūto bhāryā chandānugāminī | vibhave yaśca santuṣṭastasya svarga ihaiva hi ||

One whose son is obedient, whose wife follows his wishes, and who is content with the wealth he has: for him heaven is right here.

The line on a wife following her husband's wishes reflects its time; a marriage today is a partnership of equals, and no one should be controlled. Children are to be guided, not made to fear.

Meaning today and context

A peaceful home and a contented mind are worth more than any distant paradise. Today that harmony is built together, with respect flowing both ways in a family.

Chanakya describes a householder's 'heaven on earth': a well-guided son, a wife in harmony with him, and contentment with what one has.

2.4 Chanakya

te putrā ye piturbhaktāḥ sa pitā yastu poṣakaḥ | tanmitraṃ yatra viśvāsaḥ sā bhāryā yatra nirvṛtiḥ ||

They are sons who are devoted to their father; he is a father who nourishes; that is a friend in whom one can trust; she is a wife in whom one finds contentment.

Meaning today and context

A relationship is measured by what it gives, not by its name: care from parents, love from children, trust in friends, peace in a partner. Ask whether you are living up to your own role.

Chanakya defines each relationship by its essential quality: devotion in children, nurture in a father, trust in a friend, peace in a spouse.

2.5 Chanakya

parokṣe kāryyahantāraṃ pratyakṣe priyavādinam | varjjayettādṛśaṃ mitraṃ viṣakumbhampayomukham ||

One who ruins your work behind your back and speaks sweetly to your face: avoid such a friend, a pot of poison with milk at its mouth.

Meaning today and context

Watch what people do when you are not in the room, not just what they say to your face. Sweet words with quiet sabotage is a pattern worth noticing.

Chanakya warns against the two-faced friend, using the famous image of a pot of poison with milk on top.

2.6 Chanakya

na viśvasetkumitre ca mitre cāpi na viśvaset | kadācitkupitaṃ mitraṃ sarvaguhyaṃ prakāśayet ||

Do not trust a bad friend, and do not trust blindly even a friend; for a friend, once angered, may reveal all your secrets.

This is about discretion, not suspicion. It is not a reason to distrust everyone or to cut off friends without cause; trust is built step by step.

Meaning today and context

Even good friendships go through quarrels. Share what you can live with being known, and keep what could seriously harm you to yourself.

Chanakya advises discretion even with friends, because a friend who becomes angry may reveal every secret.

2.7 Chanakya

manasā cintitaṃ kāryaṃ vacasā na prakāśayet | maṃtreṇa rakṣayedgūḍhaṃ kāryyaṃ cāpi niyojayet ||

What has been planned in the mind should not be revealed in speech. Guard it closely by secret counsel, and put it into action.

Meaning today and context

Talk less about your plans and more about your results. Announcing a plan too early invites interference and drains your own resolve.

A maxim on keeping counsel: plans should be kept private and carried out quietly.

2.8 Chanakya

kaṣṭañca khalu mūrkhatvaṃ kaṣṭaṃ ca khalu yauvanam | kaṣṭātkaṣṭataraṃ caiva paragehe nivāsanam ||

Foolishness is truly painful, and youth too is painful; but more painful than any pain is having to live in another's house.

Living with others out of need is no failing. If dependence brings shame or despair, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Lack of understanding and the turbulence of youth bring their own troubles, but depending on others for a roof is the heaviest. Building independence is worth the effort.

Chanakya names three hardships: ignorance, the restlessness of youth, and, hardest of all, having to live in someone else's house.

2.9 Chanakya

śaile śaile na māṇikyaṃ mauktikaṃ na gaje gaje | sādhavo nahi sarvatra candanaṃ na vane vane ||

Not every mountain has rubies, not every elephant a pearl; the good are not found everywhere, nor sandalwood in every forest.

Meaning today and context

Good people are rare, so value the ones you find. And don't be discouraged when you can't find them everywhere; that is how it has always been.

A set of images on the rarity of the precious: not every mountain holds rubies, nor every forest sandalwood, nor every place good people.

2.10 Chanakya

putrāśca vividhaiḥ śīlairniyojyāḥ satataṃ budhaiḥ | nītijñāḥ śīlasampannā bhavanti kulapūjitāḥ ||

The wise should always engage their sons in good conduct of many kinds; those who know right conduct and are endowed with good character are honoured in the family.

Meaning today and context

Character is taught daily, by example and steady guidance, not in one lecture. Children who learn good judgement and good conduct become a source of pride for the whole family.

Advice to parents: the wise should continually train their children in good conduct, so they grow into people of sound judgement and character.

2.11 Chanakya

mātā śatruḥ pitā vairī yena bālo na pāṭhitaḥ | na śobhate sabhāmadhye haṃsamadhye vako yathā ||

A mother who does not educate her child is an enemy, and such a father is a foe; the child does not shine in an assembly, like a crane among swans.

The verse targets neglect, not parents who lacked means. In India every child aged 6 to 14 has a right to free schooling (RTE Act). It is not a reason to shame a child who struggles to learn.

Meaning today and context

Educating a child is one of the greatest gifts and duties of a parent. Whatever else you give, make sure your child, daughter or son, gets to learn.

Chanakya's well-known verse on the duty to educate: parents who leave a child uneducated are acting as the child's enemies.

2.12 Chanakya

lālanādbahavo doṣāstāḍanādbahavo guṇāḥ | tasmātputraṃ ca śiṣyaṃ ca tāḍayenna tu lālayet ||

Pampering brings many faults; beating brings many virtues. Therefore one should beat a son and a pupil, and not pamper them.

Firm caution: physical punishment harms children and is not endorsed here. In India corporal punishment is prohibited in schools, and hitting a child at home is not discipline. Guide children with firmness, clear limits and love. If a child is being hurt, call Childline 1098 (or 112).

Meaning today and context

The sound part is that children need limits, not endless indulgence. The method it prescribes, beating, is harmful and wrong; firmness, consistency and love work, violence does not.

A harsh maxim on discipline from its own era, claiming pampering breeds faults and beating breeds virtues.

2.13 Chanakya

ślokena vā tadardhena tadardhārdhākṣareṇa vā | avandhyaṃ divasaṃ kuryāddānādhyayanakarmabhiḥ ||

With a verse, or half of it, or a quarter, or even a single syllable, make the day fruitful through giving, study and work.

Meaning today and context

Small steps every day add up. Even on a busy or low day, read a little, learn a little, give a little, so that no day passes empty.

Chanakya urges that no day be wasted: learn at least something, however small, and spend the day in giving, study and useful work.

2.14 Chanakya

kāntā viyogaḥ svajanāpamānaḥ | ṛṇasya śeṣaḥ kunṛpasya sevā | daridrabhāvo viṣamā sabhā ca | vināgninā te pradahanti kāyam ||

Separation from one's beloved, insult from one's own people, an unpaid remnant of debt, serving a bad ruler, poverty, and a hostile assembly: these burn the body without fire.

If debt, loss or humiliation feels unbearable, you are not alone: talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Some pains are invisible but very real: missing someone you love, being humiliated by family, debt, a bad boss, money worries. Naming the pain is the first step to easing it.

A four-line upajāti verse listing six sorrows that burn a person without fire.

2.15 Chanakya

nadītīre ca ye vṛkṣāḥ parageheṣu kāminī | maṃtrihīnāśca rājānaḥ śīghraṃ naśyantyasaṃśayam ||

Trees on a riverbank, a woman who lives in others' houses, and kings without ministers: these perish quickly, without doubt.

This verse reflects the prejudices about women of its time. It is not the view of this app, and it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. Judge each person by their own conduct.

Meaning today and context

The usable point is that leaders without good advisers fall fast. The line about women reflects the narrow view of its age.

Three things the text says perish quickly: trees on a riverbank, a woman living in others' houses, and kings without ministers.

2.16 Chanakya

balaṃ vidyā ca viprāṇāṃ rājñāṃ sainyaṃ balaṃ tathā | balaṃ vittañca vaiśyānāṃ śūdrāṇāṃ paricaryikā ||

Knowledge is the strength of brahmins, an army the strength of kings, wealth the strength of vaishyas, and service that of shudras.

Old nīti spoke of family, birth and social class. Worth comes from conduct, never from birth, caste or family background; this verse must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Read today as roles, not births: a scholar's strength is learning, a leader's is the people behind them, a trader's is capital, and service is honourable strength in any person.

A statement of where each of the four traditional classes (varṇas) was thought to draw its strength.

2.17 Chanakya

nirdhanaṃ puruṣaṃ veśyā prajā bhagnaṃ nṛpaṃ tyajet | khagā vītaphalaṃ vṛkṣaṃ bhuktvā cābhyāgato gṛham ||

A courtesan leaves a man who has lost his money, subjects leave a defeated king, birds leave a tree whose fruit is gone, and a guest leaves the house once he has eaten.

Meaning today and context

Many relationships are held together by benefit and end when the benefit ends. Don't be crushed when such people leave; value the ones who stay without needing anything.

Chanakya observes how those who come for gain leave once it is gone: the courtesan, the subjects of a fallen king, birds, and guests.

2.18 Chanakya

gṛhītvā dakṣiṇāṃ viprāstyajanti yajamānakam | prāptavidyā guruṃ śiṣyo dagdhāraṇyaṃ mṛgāstathā ||

Priests leave their patron once they have taken the fee, the pupil who has gained knowledge leaves the teacher, and deer leave a burnt forest.

Meaning today and context

It is natural for people to move on once a need is met. Give without expecting lifelong gratitude, and as a learner, remember those who taught you.

Continuing the theme of self-interest: people depart once they have got what they came for.

2.19 Chanakya

durācārī durādṛṣṭirdurāvāsī ca durjanaḥ | yanmaitrī kriyate pumbhirnaraḥ śīghraṃ vinaśyati ||

One of bad conduct, of evil eye, who lives in a bad way, a wicked person: the man who makes friends with such a one is quickly ruined.

'Living in a bad place' means a way of life, not a poor neighbourhood; judge people by conduct, not by where they live or what they own.

Meaning today and context

The company you keep shapes your fate. Friendship with people of bad conduct and bad intent pulls you down faster than you expect.

Chanakya warns that friendship with someone of bad conduct, malicious intent and wicked nature soon brings ruin.

2.20 Chanakya

samāne śobhate prītiḥ rājñi sevā ca śobhate | vāṇijyaṃ vyavahāreṣu strī divyā śobhate gṛhe ||

Affection shines between equals, service shines with a king, trade shines in business dealings, and a virtuous woman shines in the home.

This verse reflects the prejudices about women of its time. It is not the view of this app, and it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. Judge each person by their own conduct.

Meaning today and context

Friendship thrives where people meet as equals, and every role suits its own setting. Confining women to the home reflects its age; today a person's place is wherever their abilities take them.

Chanakya says what is fitting in each setting: love between equals, service with a king, trade in business, and a virtuous woman in the home.
