Chapter 3

3.1 Chanakya

Whose family has no fault? Who is not troubled by illness? Who has not met with misfortune? Whose happiness lasts without a break?

Meaning today and context

Everyone's family has flaws, everyone falls ill, everyone faces bad times. Your troubles do not mean you are cursed or uniquely unlucky; they are part of every life.

Chanakya opens the chapter with four rhetorical questions: no family is flawless, no one escapes illness, misfortune or unbroken happiness.

3.2 Chanakya

ācāraḥ kulamākhyāti deśamākhyāti bhāṣaṇam | sambhramaḥ snehamākhyāti vapurākhyāti bhojanam ||

Conduct reveals one's family, speech reveals one's homeland, eager welcome reveals affection, and the body reveals one's food.

Meaning today and context

People read us by our behaviour, our way of speaking and how warmly we receive them. Your upbringing shows in how you act, so let your conduct speak well.

Chanakya lists outward signs that reveal something hidden: conduct, speech, eager welcome, and the body.

3.3 Chanakya

satkule yojayetkanyāṃ putraṃ vidyāsu yojayet | vyasane yojayecchatruṃ mitraṃ dharme niyojayet ||

Give a daughter in marriage into a good family, set a son to studies, entangle an enemy in difficulties, and engage a friend in righteousness.

Daughters deserve education as much as sons; a child's future is not only marriage. 'Entangle an enemy in difficulties' is not a licence for revenge, harassment or harm; for danger, call 112 or 181.

Meaning today and context

Two parts hold good today: help your friends towards what is right, and put every child, daughter and son alike, into education. The rest reflects its time.

A fourfold maxim on placing each person: a daughter into a good family, a son into learning, an enemy into trouble, a friend into dharma.

3.4 Chanakya

durjanasya ca sarpasya varaṃ sarpo na durjanaḥ | sarpo daṃśati kāle tu durjanastu pade pade ||

Between a wicked person and a snake, the snake is better, not the wicked person: a snake bites only at a certain time, but the wicked one at every step.

Meaning today and context

A person who means you harm can hurt you again and again, in small ways, every day. Recognise such patterns and protect yourself.

Chanakya compares the wicked person to a snake and finds the snake less dangerous.

3.5 Chanakya

For this reason kings gather people of good family about them, for they do not desert the king at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end.

Old nīti spoke of family, birth and social class. Worth comes from conduct, never from birth, caste or family background; this verse must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Leaders do well to surround themselves with people of steady character who stay through good times and bad. Look for that steadiness, wherever a person comes from.

Chanakya explains why kings keep people of good family around them: such people stay loyal at the beginning, middle and end.

3.6 Chanakya

pralaye bhinnamaryādā bhavanti kila sāgarāḥ | sāgarā bhedamicchanti pralaye'pi na sādhavaḥ ||

At the dissolution of the world, it is said, even the oceans break their bounds; the oceans long for change, but the good do not, even at the dissolution.

Meaning today and context

Good people keep their principles even when everything around them is collapsing. Crisis is the test of character.

An image of steadfastness: oceans are said to break their bounds at the world's dissolution, but the good never do.

3.7 Chanakya

mūrkhastu pariharttavyaḥ pratyakṣo dvipadaḥ paśuḥ | bhidyate vākyaśūlena adṛśyaṃ kaṇṭakaṃ yathā ||

A fool should be avoided; he is a two-legged beast in plain sight. He pierces with the spike of his words, like an unseen thorn.

'Fool' here means someone who will not learn and wounds others with words; it is not about people with learning difficulties, and calling anyone a beast is not endorsed.

Meaning today and context

Thoughtless, hurtful talk can wound more than we expect. Keep distance from people who keep hurting you with careless words, and watch your own words too.

Chanakya advises keeping away from the fool, whose words wound like a hidden thorn.

3.8 Chanakya

rūpayauvanasampannā viśālakulasambhavāḥ | vidyāhīnā na śobhante nirgandhā iva kiṃśukāḥ ||

Though endowed with beauty and youth and born in great families, those without learning do not shine, like kiṃśuka flowers that have no fragrance.

Meaning today and context

Looks, youth and family name fade or mean little on their own. What you learn and know is what gives lasting worth.

Chanakya says beauty, youth and noble birth are hollow without learning, like the bright but scentless kiṃśuka flower.

3.9 Chanakya

kokilānāṃ svaro rūpaṃ nārīrūpaṃ pativratam | vidyārūpaṃ kurūpāṇāṃ kṣamā rūpaṃ tapasvinām ||

The cuckoo's beauty is its voice, a woman's beauty is devotion to her husband, the beauty of the plain-looking is learning, and the beauty of ascetics is forgiveness.

Faithfulness belongs to both partners; defining a woman's worth by her devotion to her husband reflects its time and must not be used to control women.

Meaning today and context

Real beauty lies in qualities, not looks: a voice, knowledge, forgiveness, faithfulness. If you think you are not good-looking, learning and character are a beauty no one can take away.

Chanakya names the true beauty of different beings: the cuckoo's voice, a wife's fidelity, the learning of the plain, the forgiveness of ascetics.

3.10 Chanakya

tyajedekaṃ kulasyārthe grāmasyārthe kulaṃ tyajet | grāmaṃ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṃ tyajet ||

For the sake of the family, give up one person; for the sake of the village, give up a family; for the sake of the country, a village; for the sake of the self, give up the whole earth.

Not a licence to abandon, disown or harm any person, nor to abandon family responsibilities. If you are being pressured to cut someone off or to sacrifice yourself, seek help: 112 or Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The larger good sometimes outweighs a smaller interest, and nothing in the world is worth losing your own soul and integrity for.

A scale of sacrifice: give up one for the family, a family for the village, a village for the country, and the whole world for the self.

3.11 Chanakya

udyoge nāsti dāridryaṃ japato nāsti pātakam | maunena kalaho nāsti nāsti jāgarito bhayam ||

Where there is effort there is no poverty; for one who prays there is no sin; in silence there is no quarrel; for the one who stays awake there is no fear.

Poverty has many causes beyond a person's effort; this is not a judgement on anyone who is poor. Silence prevents quarrels, but it should not mean staying silent about abuse.

Meaning today and context

Hard work keeps want away, prayer keeps the mind clean, holding your tongue prevents fights, and alertness keeps you safe. Four simple habits, each with a clear payoff.

Four maxims on what each habit keeps away: effort and poverty, prayer and sin, silence and quarrel, watchfulness and fear.

3.12 Chanakya

atirūpeṇa vai sītā atigarveṇa rāvaṇaḥ | atidānādbalirbaddho hyati sarvatra varjayet ||

Through excessive beauty Sita (was carried off), through excessive pride Ravana (fell), through excessive giving Bali was bound; so avoid excess in everything.

Sita was not to blame for her abduction; the wrong was Ravana's alone. No one's looks ever justify harm done to them.

Meaning today and context

Too much of even a good thing can turn harmful: too much pride, too much giving, too much of anything. Balance is the safe path.

Three examples from the epics and purāṇas illustrate that excess of anything brings trouble: Sita, Ravana and King Bali.

3.13 Chanakya

ko'tibhāraḥ samarthānāṃ kiṃ dūraṃ vyavasāyinām | ko videśaḥ suvidyānāṃ kaḥ paraḥ priyavādinām ||

What load is too heavy for the capable? What is too far for the enterprising? What land is foreign to the learned? Who is a stranger to one who speaks kindly?

Meaning today and context

Ability, effort, learning and kind speech open every door. With these, a new city, a hard task or a room of strangers need not frighten you.

Four rhetorical questions on what nothing can stop: the capable, the enterprising, the learned and the kind-spoken.

3.14 Chanakya

ekenāpi suvṛkṣeṇa dahyamānena gandhinā | vāsitaṃ tadvanaṃ sarvaṃ suputreṇa kulaṃ yathā ||

By a single good tree, fragrant even as it burns, the whole forest is perfumed; so is a family by a good son.

Meaning today and context

One good person can lift the name of a whole family, even through their own hardship. Every child, son or daughter, can be that fragrance.

The first of three family similes: one fragrant tree, even as it burns, scents the whole forest, as one good son does his family.

3.15 Chanakya

ekena śuṣkavṛkṣeṇa dahyamānena vahninā | dahyate tadvanaṃ sarvaṃ kuputreṇa kulaṃ yathā ||

By a single dry tree set ablaze, the whole forest is burnt; so is a family by a bad son.

Not a reason to disown a struggling child or relative; addiction and trouble call for help and support. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

One person's wrongdoing can bring grief and shame on everyone close to them. Our choices are never only our own.

The contrasting simile: one dry tree on fire burns the whole forest, as one bad son ruins his family.

3.16 Chanakya

ekenāpi suputreṇa vidyāyuktena sādhunā | āhlāditaṃ kulaṃ sarvaṃ yathā candreṇa śarvarī ||

By one good son, learned and virtuous, the whole family is gladdened, as the night is by the moon.

Meaning today and context

Learning joined with goodness is what truly brightens a home. One such child, son or daughter, is a light for everyone.

The third simile: one learned and good son gladdens the whole family as the moon lights the night.

3.17 Chanakya

kiṃ jātairbahubhiḥ putraiḥ śokasantāpakārakaiḥ | varamekaḥ kulālambī yatra viśrāmyate kulam ||

What use are many sons who cause grief and torment? Better one who is a support to the family, in whom the family finds rest.

Meaning today and context

Quality of upbringing matters more than the number of children. Today we would say the same of daughters: one caring child, of either sex, can be the family's anchor.

Chanakya asks what use many children are if they bring grief, and prefers one who supports the family.

3.18 Chanakya

lālayetpañcavarṣāṇi daśa varṣāṇi tāḍayet | prāpte tu ṣoḍaśe varṣe putraṃ mitravadācaret ||

Indulge a son for five years, and for ten years punish him (literally, beat him); but when he reaches sixteen, treat him as a friend.

Firm caution: physical punishment harms children and is not endorsed here. In India corporal punishment is prohibited in schools, and hitting a child at home is not discipline. Guide children with firmness, clear limits and love. If a child is being hurt, call Childline 1098 (or 112).

Meaning today and context

The lasting insight is that parenting changes with age: warmth in early years, clear limits while growing, friendship and respect with a teenager. The physical punishment it names is harmful and not endorsed.

A well-known maxim on stages of child-rearing, from its own era: indulge till five, discipline (literally 'beat') for ten years, treat as a friend at sixteen.

3.19 Chanakya

upasarge'nyacakre ca durbhikṣe ca bhayāvahe | asādhujanasamparke yaḥ palāyati jīvati ||

In a calamity, in an invasion by a foreign army, in a terrible famine, and in contact with wicked people, the one who flees survives.

In a disaster, follow official evacuation guidance. If you are in danger from a person, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

There is no shame in leaving danger. When a situation is unsafe, whether a disaster or a harmful person, getting out is the wise choice.

Practical advice for disaster: in calamity, invasion, famine or among the wicked, the one who gets away survives.

3.20 Chanakya

dharmārthakāmamokṣeṣu yasyaiko'pi na vidyate | janmajanmani martyeṣu maraṇaṃ tasya kevalam ||

One who has not even one of these, dharma, wealth, pleasure or liberation: his birth among mortals, birth after birth, is nothing but dying.

Not a judgement that any person's life is worthless. If you feel your life has no meaning or you think of ending it, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A human life is meant to pursue something worthwhile: goodness, honest prosperity, wholesome joy or spiritual freedom. If you feel aimless, start with one of these.

Chanakya says a life that pursues none of the four human aims (dharma, artha, kāma, mokṣa) is wasted.

3.21 Chanakya

mūrkhā yatra na pūjyante dhānyaṃ yatra susañcitam | dāmpatye kalaho nāsti tatra śrīḥ svayamāgatā ||

Where fools are not honoured, where grain is well stored, and where there is no quarrel between husband and wife: there Lakshmi, prosperity, comes of her own accord.

Meaning today and context

A home or organisation prospers when it values wisdom over noise, saves sensibly, and keeps peace between partners. Prosperity follows good order.

Chanakya names three conditions under which prosperity comes on its own: fools are not honoured, grain is well stored, and husband and wife do not quarrel.
