1.1 Upanishadic seer

kiṃkāraṇaṃ brahma kutaḥ sma jātā jīvāmaḥ kena kva ca saṃpratiṣṭhāḥ | adhiṣṭhitāḥ kena sukhetareṣu vartāmahe brahmavido vyavasthām ||

What is the cause? Is it brahman? From where were we born? By what do we live, and on what are we finally established? Governed by whom do we go on, in pleasure and in pain? O knowers of brahman, tell us how it stands.

Meaning today and context

The questions 'where did I come from, what keeps me going, who or what is in charge of my joys and sorrows' are old and honest. Asking them seriously, together with others, is where real inquiry begins.

The Upanishad opens with expounders of brahman (brahmavādins) discussing among themselves the great questions: what is the cause of all, where do we come from, and who governs our lives.

1.2 Upanishadic seer

kālaḥ svabhāvo niyatiryadṛcchā bhūtāni yoniḥ puruṣeti cintyam | saṃyoga eṣāṃ na tvātmabhāvādātmā hyanīśaḥ sukhaduḥkhahetoḥ ||

Time, inherent nature, fixed necessity, chance, the elements, the womb, the person: these are to be considered. Yet not a combination of these, because of the existence of the self; and the self too is not master, being subject to the causes of pleasure and pain.

Meaning today and context

We often explain our lives by luck, fate, genes or circumstance. The verse takes those seriously but notices they don't account for the one who experiences, nor do we ourselves fully control what befalls us.

The inquirers weigh the explanations current in their time (time, inherent nature, fixed order, chance, the elements, the womb, the person) and find each insufficient.

1.3 Upanishadic seer

te dhyānayogānugatā apaśyandevātmaśaktiṃ svaguṇairnigūḍhām | yaḥ kāraṇāni nikhilāni tāni kālātmayuktānyadhitiṣṭhatyekaḥ ||

Following the yoga of meditation, they saw the power of God's own self, hidden by its own qualities: the One who presides over all those causes, from time to the self.

Meaning today and context

Some answers do not come from argument alone. The seers found theirs by turning inward in meditation; quiet attention can show what discussion cannot.

The inquirers turn to meditation and find the answer: the power of God, hidden in its own qualities, who alone presides over all those causes.

1.4 Upanishadic seer

tamekanemiṃ trivṛtaṃ ṣoḍaśāntaṃ śatārdhāraṃ viṃśatipratyarābhiḥ | aṣṭakaiḥ ṣaḍbhirviśvarūpaikapāśaṃ trimārgabhedaṃ dvinimittaikamoham ||

They saw him as a wheel with one rim, threefold, with sixteen ends, fifty spokes, twenty counter-spokes, six sets of eight, one rope of many forms, three different paths, and one delusion arising from two causes.

Meaning today and context

Life can feel like a great turning wheel, with countless parts and a single binding delusion running through it. The image invites us to see the whole machine rather than be lost in its spin.

The seers describe the world as a vast wheel governed by God, in a dense numerical image whose parts (threes, sixteens, fifties) stand for categories of nature and the mind.

1.5 Upanishadic seer

pañcasroto'mbuṃ pañcayonyugravaktrāṃ pañcaprāṇormiṃ pañcabuddhyādimūlāṃ | pañcāvartāṃ pañcaduḥkhaughavegāṃ pañcāśadbhedāṃ pañcaparvāmadhīmaḥ ||

We study it as a river whose waters are five streams, fierce and winding from five sources, whose waves are the five breaths, whose origin is fivefold perception, with five whirlpools, a fivefold flood of sorrow, fifty branches and five sections.

Meaning today and context

Our experience through the senses can sweep us along like a flooded river with whirlpools of sorrow. Seeing it clearly as a river is the first step to not drowning in it.

A second dense image: the world of experience as a fierce river, every feature of which comes in fives (senses, breaths, sorrows), studied by the seers.

1.6 Upanishadic seer

sarvājīve sarvasaṃsthe bṛhante tasminhaṃso bhrāmyate brahmacakre | pṛthagātmānaṃ preritāraṃ ca matvā juṣṭastatastenāmṛtatvameti ||

In this vast wheel of brahman, which gives life to all and in which all rests, the swan (the soul) wanders, thinking itself separate from the Impeller. Then, favoured by him, it reaches immortality.

Meaning today and context

Much of our restlessness comes from feeling we are on our own, cut off from the source of our life. Recognising that we are held and moved by something greater brings a deep relief, felt as grace.

The seer explains why the soul wanders in the wheel and how it is freed: by rightly knowing itself and the One who moves it, and being favoured by him.

1.7 Upanishadic seer

udgītametatparamaṃ tu brahma tasmiṃstrayaṃ svapratiṣṭhākṣaraṃ ca | atrāntaraṃ brahmavido viditvā līnā brahmaṇi tatparā yonimuktāḥ ||

This is what is sung of as the supreme brahman. In it is the triad; it is the firm foundation, the imperishable. Knowing what lies within it, the knowers of brahman become merged in brahman, devoted to it, freed from the womb.

Meaning today and context

Everything we are, the world we live in, and the divine rest on one foundation. Knowing that ground and giving oneself to it is what the seers call freedom.

The seer names the goal: the supreme brahman, praised in the Veda, in which the triad (world, soul, God) rests; its knowers merge in it and are freed from rebirth.

1.8 Upanishadic seer

saṃyuktametatkṣaramakṣaraṃ ca vyaktāvyaktaṃ bharate viśvamīśaḥ | anīśaścātmā badhyate bhoktṛbhāvājjñātvā devaṃ mucyate sarvapāśaiḥ ||

The Lord bears this universe, joined together of the perishable and the imperishable, the manifest and the unmanifest. The self, not being master, is bound because it takes itself to be the enjoyer; knowing God, it is freed from all fetters.

Meaning today and context

We get bound when we live as consumers of experience, always reaching for the next pleasure. Knowing that we are not the master of everything, and that the whole is held by God, loosens those chains.

The seer explains bondage and freedom: the Lord holds the whole world together; the individual self is bound by its role as enjoyer and freed by knowing God.

1.9 Upanishadic seer

jñājñau dvāvajāvīśanīśāvajā hyekā bhoktṛbhogārthayuktā | anantaścātmā viśvarūpo hyakartā trayaṃ yadā vindate brahmametat ||

There are two unborn ones: one knowing, one unknowing; one master, one not master. And there is one unborn female, joined to the enjoyer and the objects of enjoyment. And the self is infinite, of all forms, a non-doer. When one finds these three, that is brahman.

Meaning today and context

The verse holds three things in view at once: ourselves, the world we experience, and the divine. Seeing how they belong together, rather than mistaking one for the whole, is the beginning of clarity.

The seer lists the three unborn realities: the knowing Lord, the unknowing soul, and nature (the unborn female) that serves the soul's experience; knowing all three is knowing brahman.

1.10 Upanishadic seer

kṣaraṃ pradhānamamṛtākṣaraṃ haraḥ kṣarātmānāvīśate deva ekaḥ | tasyābhidhyānādyojanāttattvabhāvādbhūyaścānte viśvamāyānivṛttiḥ ||

The perishable is primal matter; the immortal, imperishable one is Hara. The one God rules over both the perishable and the self. By meditating on him, by joining with him, and by becoming his reality more and more, there is at last the ceasing of all illusion (māyā).

Meaning today and context

The way out of illusion is not a single insight but steady practice: dwelling on the divine, connecting to it, and slowly becoming like it. Over time, what deceived us loosens its grip.

The seer names the one God (Hara, a name of Rudra-Shiva) as ruler of both matter and soul, and gives the path: meditation, union and becoming one with his reality, until all illusion ceases.

1.11 Upanishadic seer

jñātvā devaṃ sarvapāśāpahāniḥ kṣīṇaiḥ kleśairjanmamṛtyuprahāṇiḥ | tasyābhidhyānāttṛtīyaṃ dehabhede viśvaiśvaryaṃ kevala āptakāmaḥ ||

Knowing God, all fetters fall away; with the afflictions worn out, birth and death are left behind. By meditating on him, at the body's dissolution comes a third state, lordship over all; alone and whole, one's desires fulfilled.

The verse speaks of what follows the body's end for one who knows God; it is not an invitation to die. If you are thinking about death or ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

As the inner afflictions (ignorance, ego, craving, aversion, fear) wear thin, the chains they forge fall away. The verse promises a fullness in which nothing more needs to be wanted.

The seer describes the fruits of knowing God: release from fetters and afflictions, and of meditating on him: a third state after the body falls, complete and fulfilled.

1.12 Upanishadic seer

etajjñeyaṃ nityamevātmasaṃsthaṃ nātaḥ paraṃ veditavyaṃ hi kiṃcit | bhoktā bhogyaṃ preritāraṃ ca matvā sarvaṃ proktaṃ trividhaṃ brahmametat ||

This is to be known, eternal, abiding in oneself; beyond it there is nothing whatever to be known. Knowing the enjoyer, the enjoyed and the Impeller, all has been told: this is the threefold brahman.

Meaning today and context

After all our searching outside, the Upanishad says the one thing worth knowing is already within us. Understanding ourselves, our world and what moves both is the whole of wisdom.

The seer sums up: this, abiding in oneself, is what is to be known; there is nothing beyond it. Enjoyer, enjoyed and the Impeller together are the threefold brahman.

1.13 Upanishadic seer

vahneryathā yonigatasya mūrtirna dṛśyate naiva ca liṅganāśaḥ | sa bhūya evendhanayonigṛhyastadvobhayaṃ vai praṇavena dehe ||

As the form of fire lying in its source is not seen, yet its subtle presence is not destroyed, and it can be seized again by the drill in the fuel-wood; so both are seized in the body by Om.

Meaning today and context

Not seeing the divine in ourselves does not mean it is absent. Like fire in wood, it is there, waiting to be kindled by patient practice.

The seer uses the image of fire hidden in firewood: unseen but not lost, it can be drawn out by friction; so the Self and God are grasped in the body through Om.

1.14 Upanishadic seer

svadehamaraṇiṃ kṛtvā praṇavaṃ cottarāraṇiṃ | dhyānanirmathanābhyāsāddevaṃ paśyennigūḍhavat ||

Making one's own body the lower fire-stick and Om the upper fire-stick, by practising the friction of meditation one should see God, hidden as it were.

Meaning today and context

Realisation is not sudden magic; it is like lighting fire by friction, steady and repeated. The body, the sound of Om and patient meditation together are the means.

The seer gives the method in the same image: the body as the lower fire-stick, Om as the upper, and meditation as the friction that reveals God.

1.15 Upanishadic seer

tileṣu tailaṃ dadhanīva sarpirāpaḥ srotaḥsvaraṇīṣu cāgniḥ | evamātmā ātmani gṛhyate'sau satyenainaṃ tapasā yo'nupaśyati ||

As oil in sesame seeds, as ghee in curd, as water in hidden springs, as fire in the fire-sticks, so is this Self grasped within oneself by one who sees it through truthfulness and discipline.

Tapas here means discipline and sincere effort, not punishing or harming the body.

Meaning today and context

What is most precious in us is already there, like oil in a seed, but it needs pressing, churning and effort to come out. Honesty and steady discipline are what draw it forth.

The seer gives four images of what is hidden yet present (oil in sesame, ghee in curd, water in springs, fire in wood) for the Self found within by truth and discipline.

1.16 Upanishadic seer

sarvavyāpinamātmānaṃ kṣīre sarpirivārpitam | ātmavidyātapomūlaṃ tadbrahmopaniṣatparaṃ tadbrahmopaniṣatparam ||

The Self that pervades all, present like ghee in milk, rooted in self-knowledge and discipline: that is brahman, the highest teaching. That is brahman, the highest teaching.

Meaning today and context

The highest truth is not somewhere else; it runs through everything, as butterfat runs through milk. Self-knowledge and discipline are the roots from which that truth becomes our own.

The chapter closes: the all-pervading Self, present like ghee in milk, rooted in self-knowledge and discipline, is brahman, the highest secret teaching; the last line is repeated to mark the end.
