1.1 Upanishadic seer

īśā vāsyamidaṃ sarvaṃ yatkiñca jagatyāṃ jagat | tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā mā gṛdhaḥ kasya sviddhanam ||

All this, whatever moves in this moving world, is to be clothed (dwelt in) by the Lord. Enjoy it through letting go; do not covet. Whose, after all, is wealth?

Meaning today and context

Nothing we have is finally ours; it is held in a larger whole. Using things without grasping at them, and without eyeing what belongs to others, lets us enjoy life more, not less.

The opening mantra of the Isha Upanishad: the seer declares that everything that moves in the world is pervaded by the Lord, and teaches how to live in it.

1.2 Upanishadic seer

kurvanneveha karmāṇi jijīviṣecchataṃ samāḥ | evaṃ tvayi nānyatheto'sti na karma lipyate nare ||

Doing one's works here, one should wish to live a hundred years. For you, living thus, there is no other way than this: action does not cling to the person.

Meaning today and context

The Upanishad does not ask us to run from life. It asks for a long, active life of work, lived in the spirit of the first mantra, so that what we do does not weigh us down or bind us.

The seer continues: one should wish to live a full hundred years doing one's work; for one who lives this way, action does not cling.

1.3 Upanishadic seer

asuryā nāma te lokā andhena tamasāvṛtāḥ | tāṃste pretyābhigacchanti ye ke cātmahano janāḥ ||

Sunless, they are called, those worlds, covered in blind darkness. To them, after death, go all those people who slay the Self.

'Slayers of the Self' (ātmahan) means those who ignore or deny the Self, not people who died by suicide. Never use this verse to judge them or their families. If you are thinking of ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416 now.

Meaning today and context

To live only for possessions and appetites, never asking who we are, is to darken our own life. The 'slaying' is a forgetting of the Self, a turning away from what is deepest in us.

The seer warns of the fate of those who ignore the Self that the first two mantras point to; 'slayers of the Self' here means those who live as if the Self did not exist.

1.4 Upanishadic seer

anejadekaṃ manaso javīyo nainaddevā āpnuvanpūrvamarṣat | taddhāvato'nyānatyeti tiṣṭhattasminnapo mātariśvā dadhāti ||

Unmoving, the One is swifter than the mind. The gods (the senses) could not reach it, for it ran ahead. Standing still, it overtakes those who run. In it the wind places the waters (sustains all activity).

Meaning today and context

However fast the mind races, it never gets ahead of the awareness in which it races. What we are seeking is already present before we start looking.

The seer describes the Self (the One) in paradoxes: unmoving yet swifter than thought, beyond the reach of the senses.

1.5 Upanishadic seer

tadejati tannaijati taddūre tadvantike | tadantarasya sarvasya tadu sarvasyāsya bāhyataḥ ||

It moves, and it does not move. It is far, and it is near. It is within all this, and it is outside all this.

Meaning today and context

The divine is not in one place we must travel to. It feels far when we look for it as an object, and is nearest of all as the one who looks.

The seer continues the paradoxes about the Self: it is both far and near, inside and outside everything.

1.6 Upanishadic seer

But one who sees all beings in the Self alone, and the Self in all beings, no longer shrinks from anyone in revulsion.

Meaning today and context

Contempt and disgust for others come from seeing them as wholly separate from us. When we sense the same life in them as in ourselves, hatred loses its ground.

The seer describes the one who sees all beings in the Self and the Self in all beings, and what follows from that seeing.

1.7 Upanishadic seer

yasminsarvāṇi bhūtānyātmaivābhūdvijānataḥ | tatra ko mohaḥ kaḥ śoka ekatvamanupaśyataḥ ||

When, for one who knows, all beings have become the Self itself, then what delusion, what grief can there be for one who sees oneness?

For someone grieving, acknowledge the loss first. This verse describes a deep realisation; it does not say that mourning is wrong.

Meaning today and context

Much of our confusion and sorrow comes from feeling cut off and alone. The verse points to a seeing in which nothing is foreign to us, and that seeing steadies the heart.

The seer continues: for one in whom all beings have become the Self, there is no delusion and no grief.

1.8 Upanishadic seer

sa paryagācchukramakāyamavraṇamasnāviraṃ śuddhamapāpaviddham | kavirmanīṣī paribhūḥ svayambhūryāthātathyato'rthānvyadadhācchāśvatībhyaḥ samābhyaḥ ||

He has gone everywhere: bright, bodiless, without wound or sinew, pure, unpierced by evil. The seer, the wise one, encompassing all, self-existent, he has set out all things rightly, as they truly are, for endless years.

Meaning today and context

Whatever wounds the body or the mind carries, the Self is untouched by them. Our deepest nature is not stained by what we have done or suffered.

The seer describes the Self: bright, bodiless, pure, untouched by evil, the self-existent seer who has ordered all things through the ages.

1.9 Upanishadic seer

andhaṃ tamaḥ praviśanti ye'vidyāmupāsate | tato bhūya iva te tamo ya u vidyāyāṃ ratāḥ ||

Into blind darkness enter those who devote themselves to ignorance (avidyā). Into still greater darkness, as it were, go those who delight in knowledge (vidyā) alone.

Meaning today and context

A life of only doing, and a life of only knowing, both fall short. Book knowledge or spiritual talk cut off from life can be a deeper trap than plain ignorance, because it breeds pride.

The seer begins a three-mantra teaching on vidyā (knowledge) and avidyā (ignorance). The pair is read in more than one way: avidyā as ritual works and vidyā as knowledge or meditation, or as worldly and spiritual learning.

1.10 Upanishadic seer

anyadevāhurvidyayānyadāhuravidyayā | iti śuśruma dhīrāṇāṃ ye nastadvicacakṣire ||

One result, they say, comes from knowledge; another, they say, from ignorance. So we have heard from the wise who explained it to us.

Meaning today and context

Different paths lead to different places; knowing what each one actually gives is part of choosing well. The verse also shows humility: the teaching is received from those who know.

The seer says the results of knowledge and of ignorance are different, as handed down by the wise.

1.11 Upanishadic seer

vidyāṃ cāvidyāṃ ca yastadvedobhayaṃ saha | avidyayā mṛtyuṃ tīrtvā vidyayāmṛtamaśnute ||

One who knows both knowledge and ignorance together crosses beyond death by ignorance, and by knowledge attains the immortal.

Meaning today and context

Worldly skill and inner understanding are not enemies. One carries us through the needs of mortal life, the other opens what is deathless; a full life holds both.

The seer resolves the pair: one should know knowledge and ignorance together, each doing its part.

1.12 Upanishadic seer

andhaṃ tamaḥ praviśanti ye'sambhūtimupāsate | tato bhūya iva te tamo ya u sambhūtyāṃ ratāḥ ||

Into blind darkness enter those who devote themselves to non-becoming (the unmanifest). Into still greater darkness, as it were, go those who delight in becoming (the manifest) alone.

Meaning today and context

Clinging only to the unseen, or only to the seen, is one-sided. The verse warns against any single half of reality taken as the whole.

The seer repeats the pattern of mantra 9 with a second pair: sambhūti (becoming, the manifest) and asambhūti (non-becoming, the unmanifest). The pair is read in more than one way, and the text is genuinely obscure here.

1.13 Upanishadic seer

anyadevāhuḥ saṃbhavādanyadāhurasaṃbhavāt | iti śuśruma dhīrāṇāṃ ye nastadvicacakṣire ||

One result, they say, comes from becoming; another, they say, from non-becoming. So we have heard from the wise who explained it to us.

Meaning today and context

Every way of seeking has its own fruit. Learning from those who have walked a path helps us see what it really leads to.

The seer says the results of becoming and of non-becoming are different, as taught by the wise; it mirrors mantra 10.

1.14 Upanishadic seer

saṃbhūtiṃ ca vināśaṃ ca yastadvedobhayaṃ saha | vināśena mṛtyuṃ tīrtvā saṃbhūtyāmṛtamaśnute ||

One who knows both becoming and destruction together crosses beyond death by destruction, and by becoming attains the immortal.

Meaning today and context

Accepting that everything passes, and also knowing what comes into being and endures, frees us from fear of the end. Knowing both is the way through.

The seer resolves the second pair as mantra 11 resolved the first, here calling the unmanifest side 'destruction' (vināśa), the perishable.

1.15 Upanishadic seer

hiraṇmayena pātreṇa satyasyāpihitaṃ mukham | tattvaṃ pūṣannapāvṛṇu satyadharmāya dṛṣṭaye ||

The face of truth is covered by a golden vessel. Uncover it, O Pūṣan, so that I, whose law is truth, may see.

Meaning today and context

What hides the truth from us is often something golden: success, comfort, the glitter of things. The verse is a prayer to see past what dazzles to what is real.

The closing prayer begins, traditionally recited by one nearing death: the seeker asks Pūṣan, the sun as nourisher, to uncover the face of truth.

1.16 Upanishadic seer

pūṣannekarṣe yama sūrya prājāpatya vyūha raśmīnsamūha tejaḥ | yatte rūpaṃ kalyāṇatamaṃ tatte paśyāmi yo'sāvasau puruṣaḥ so'hamasmi ||

O Pūṣan, lone seer, Yama, Sun, son of Prajāpati, spread apart your rays, gather in your brilliance. That form of yours which is most blessed, that I see. That person yonder, that person, I am he.

Meaning today and context

The light we revere outside is, in the end, not other than what we are. When the glare dies down, what is seen is gentle, and it is our own deepest self.

The prayer continues: the seeker asks the sun to draw in its rays so that its most blessed form can be seen, and recognises the person within the sun as himself.

1.17 Upanishadic seer

vāyuranilamamṛtamathedaṃ bhasmāntaṃ śarīram | oṃ krato smara kṛtaṃ smara krato smara kṛtaṃ smara ||

Let my breath go to the immortal wind; this body ends in ashes. Om. O mind, remember, remember what has been done. O mind, remember, remember what has been done.

If you are grieving, your loss comes first and mourning is natural; this prayer does not dismiss it. If you are thinking about dying or ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Facing the end calmly means letting the body return to the elements and taking stock of the life one has lived. It is also a reminder, while we still live, that how we act is what we carry.

At the moment of death, the seeker says the breath returns to the immortal wind and the body ends in ashes, and asks the mind to remember what has been done.

1.18 Upanishadic seer

agne naya supathā rāye asmānviśvāni deva vayunāni vidvān | yuyodhyasmajjuhurāṇameno bhūyiṣṭhāṃ te nama uktiṃ vidhema ||

O Agni, lead us by a good path to well-being, O god who knows all our ways. Keep from us the crooked wrong. We offer you our fullest words of homage.

Meaning today and context

A prayer for anyone at a crossroads: to be led by a straight and good path, and kept from the crooked choices that tempt us. Asking for guidance is itself a step onto that path.

The final mantra: the seeker prays to Agni, the fire that knows all ways, to lead by a good path and to keep wrongdoing away.
