With roots above and branches below is this eternal fig tree. That is the bright one, that is Brahman, that alone is called the immortal. On it all worlds rest; no one ever passes beyond it. This, truly, is that.

The world we see is like branches spreading down from a hidden root. To understand our lives we have to look to the source, not only the branches.
Yama opens the last vallī (traditionally 2.3) with the eternal aśvattha tree, roots above and branches below, and identifies its root with Brahman, the immortal.
Whatever there is, this whole world, having come forth, moves in the breath of life. It is a great fear, an upraised thunderbolt. Those who know it become immortal.

There is an awesome power behind the order of the world that nothing escapes. Recognising it brings humility, and knowing it as one's own source brings freedom from fear.
Yama: this whole moving world came forth from and trembles in the life-breath, a great terror like an upraised thunderbolt; those who know it become immortal.
From fear of it fire burns; from fear the sun gives heat; from fear Indra and Wind, and Death as the fifth, run their course.

Even the great powers of nature keep to an order beyond them. Everything, including death, has its place in a larger law; nothing runs on its own whim.
Yama: out of fear of Brahman fire burns, the sun gives heat, and Indra, Wind and Death run to their tasks.
If one has been able to know it here, before the body falls apart, [one is freed]; if not, then one becomes fit for embodiment in the created worlds.
This verse is about the Self that does not die, not an invitation to die. If you are grieving or thinking about death or ending your life, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

This life is the time to understand what matters most; there is no reason to postpone it. The point is urgency in living wisely now, not anything about hastening death.
Yama: if one can know it here, before the body falls away, one is freed; otherwise one becomes fit for embodiment again in the created worlds.

Yama: the Self is seen in oneself as in a mirror, in the world of the fathers as in a dream, in the gandharva world as a reflection in water, and in Brahma's world as clearly as light and shade.

We can't capture the deepest reality in words or concepts, but we can affirm that it is. Starting from that simple affirmation, rather than proof, is how understanding begins.
Yama: the Self cannot be reached by speech, mind or eye; how can it be grasped except by saying 'it is'?
It should be grasped as 'it is', and as the true nature of both. For one who has grasped it as 'it is', its true nature becomes clear.

This verse gives the old Upanishadic picture of how the self leaves the body. Its lasting point is that one's inner orientation, upward toward the highest, shapes one's journey.
Yama describes the departure at death: of the heart's hundred and one channels, one goes to the crown of the head; going up by it one reaches immortality, the others lead in all directions.
The Person the size of a thumb, the inner Self, is ever seated in the hearts of people. One should draw him out from one's own body with steadiness, like the stalk from the muñja grass. One should know him as the bright, the immortal; one should know him as the bright, the immortal.
'Drawing the Self out of the body' is a meditative discernment, not a call to harm or neglect the body. If you feel disconnected from your body or want to hurt yourself, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Yama's final instruction: the thumb-sized inner Self dwells always in people's hearts; one should draw it out from one's body with steadiness, like the reed from the grass, and know it as the bright, the immortal.

Naciketas was a boy who refused easy rewards and kept asking the real question. The Upanishad ends by saying the same path is open to anyone with that sincerity.
The closing verse, spoken by the text's narrator: Naciketas, having received this knowledge and the whole method of yoga from Death, attained Brahman; so will anyone else who knows the inner Self.
