dhanino vādhanā ye ca vartayanti svatantriṇaḥ | sukhaduḥkhāgamasteṣāṃ kaḥ kathaṃ vā pitāmaha ||

Yudhishthira said: The rich, and the poor, who make their living independently, how do happiness and sorrow come to them, and in what way, grandfather?

Meaning today and context

It is a question everyone asks: does money make people happier? Bhishma will answer that it depends on clinging, not on the amount.

Mahabharata 12.170.1: Yudhishthira asks Bhishma how happiness and sorrow come to the rich and to the poor who live by their own means.

12.170.2 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | śamyākena vimuktena gītaṃ śāntigatena ha ||

Bhishma said: On this they recite this ancient account, sung by Shamyaka, who was liberated and had attained peace.

Meaning today and context

Bhishma points to someone who lived the answer, not only someone who argued it.

Mahabharata 12.170.2: Bhishma says he will answer with an old account: the song sung by Shamyaka, who was free and had reached peace.

12.170.3 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

abravīnmāṃ purā kaścidbrāhmaṇastyāgamāsthitaḥ | kliśyamānaḥ kudāreṇa kucailena bubhukṣayā ||

Long ago a certain brahmin who had taken up renunciation spoke to me, while he was afflicted by a bad wife, poor clothing and hunger.

The text's 'bad wife' reflects its time; it is not a judgement on women or wives.

Meaning today and context

Shamyaka's peace was not born of easy circumstances; he found it in the middle of hardship.

Mahabharata 12.170.3: Bhishma says that long ago a brahmin (Shamyaka) who had embraced renunciation spoke to him, though he was suffering from a poor wife, ragged clothes and hunger.

12.170.4 Shampaka

To a human being born in this world, from birth onward, joys and sorrows of many kinds keep coming.

Meaning today and context

Ups and downs are not a sign that something has gone wrong with your life; they are part of every life.

Mahabharata 12.170.4: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): from birth onward, many kinds of sorrows and joys come to every human being.

12.170.5 Shampaka

tayorekatare mārge yadyenamabhisaṃnayet | na sukhaṃ prāpya saṃhṛṣyenna duḥkhaṃ prāpya saṃjvaret ||

Whichever of the two paths it may lead him on, he should not be elated on gaining happiness, nor be inflamed with distress on meeting sorrow.

Evenness does not mean suppressing feelings or grief; it means not being swept away by them. If distress feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Do not let good news carry you away or bad news burn you up. That steadiness is what lets you face both well.

Mahabharata 12.170.5: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): whichever of the two paths fate leads a person on, one should not be elated on getting joy nor burn with distress on getting sorrow.

12.170.6 Shampaka

na vai carasi yacchreya ātmano vā yadīhase | akāmātmāpi hi sadā dhuramudyamya caiva hi ||

You do not pursue what is truly good for yourself, nor what you actually strive for; even without desire, you are always taking up the yoke and carrying it.

Meaning today and context

We carry many burdens out of habit, often not even the ones we chose, and still miss what is truly good for us.

Mahabharata 12.170.6: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma), addressing a listener (or himself): you do not pursue what is truly good for you, though even without wanting it you are always carrying the burden.

12.170.7 Shampaka

akiṃcanaḥ paripatansukhamāsvādayiṣyasi | akiṃcanaḥ sukhaṃ śete samuttiṣṭhati caiva hi ||

Owning nothing, moving freely about, you will taste happiness. One who owns nothing sleeps happily and rises happily.

Owning nothing here means inner freedom from craving and possessiveness. It is not advice to give up work, income, food or care for those who depend on you, nor a reason to romanticise real poverty.

Meaning today and context

Much of our sleeplessness comes from what we are guarding and fearing to lose. The less we cling, the lighter we sleep and wake.

Mahabharata 12.170.7: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): owning nothing, wandering freely, you will taste happiness; one who owns nothing sleeps well and rises well.

12.170.8 Shampaka

ākiṃcanyaṃ sukhaṃ loke pathyaṃ śivamanāmayam | anamitramatho hyetaddurlabhaṃ sulabhaṃ satām ||

Having nothing is happiness in this world: wholesome, auspicious, free from sickness, and without enemies. It is hard to attain, yet easy for the good.

Owning nothing here means inner freedom from craving and possessiveness. It is not advice to give up work, income, food or care for those who depend on you, nor a reason to romanticise real poverty.

Meaning today and context

Wanting little leaves less to fight over and less to fear. It is hard for most of us, but it comes naturally to those with good hearts.

Mahabharata 12.170.8: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): having nothing is happiness in this world: wholesome, auspicious, free from ills and from enemies; hard to attain, yet easy for the good.

12.170.9 Shampaka

akiṃcanasya śuddhasya upapannasya sarvaśaḥ | avekṣamāṇastrīṃllokānna tulyamupalakṣaye ||

Surveying the three worlds, I see nothing equal to one who has nothing, who is pure, and who is wholly content.

Owning nothing here means inner freedom from craving and possessiveness. It is not advice to give up work, income, food or care for those who depend on you, nor a reason to romanticise real poverty.

Meaning today and context

A clean, contented heart is a rare kind of riches that cannot be bought.

Mahabharata 12.170.9: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): looking across the three worlds, he sees nothing equal to one who owns nothing, is pure, and is content in every way.

12.170.10 Shampaka

ākiṃcanyaṃ ca rājyaṃ ca tulayā samatolayam | atyaricyata dāridryaṃ rājyādapi guṇādhikam ||

I weighed having nothing and a kingdom against each other on the scales; poverty outweighed the kingdom, being richer in good qualities.

Owning nothing here means inner freedom from craving and possessiveness. It is not advice to give up work, income, food or care for those who depend on you, nor a reason to romanticise real poverty.

Meaning today and context

Power and possessions come with weights of their own. Freedom from them has a worth that is easy to overlook.

Mahabharata 12.170.10: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): he weighed having nothing against a kingdom on the scales, and poverty outweighed the kingdom in merit.

12.170.11 Shampaka

ākiṃcanye ca rājye ca viśeṣaḥ sumahānayam | nityodvigno hi dhanavānmṛtyorāsyagato yathā ||

Between having nothing and having a kingdom there is this very great difference: the wealthy man is always anxious, like one who has entered the mouth of death.

This is not financial advice; managing money responsibly is wise. The verse is about the anxiety that comes from clinging to wealth.

Meaning today and context

Wealth often brings constant worry: about losing it, protecting it, growing it. Notice how much of your anxiety is about what you hold.

Mahabharata 12.170.11: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): the great difference between having nothing and having a kingdom is that the wealthy person is constantly anxious, as if in the jaws of death.

12.170.12 Shampaka

naivāsyāgnirna cādityo na mṛtyurna ca dasyavaḥ | prabhavanti dhanajyāninirmuktasya nirāśiṣaḥ ||

Neither fire, nor the sun, nor death, nor robbers have power over one who is freed from wealth and its loss and who has no cravings.

Meaning today and context

What you do not cling to cannot be taken from you. Freedom from craving is a kind of safety no lock can give.

Mahabharata 12.170.12: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): neither fire, nor sun, nor death, nor robbers have power over one who is free of gaining and losing wealth and free of craving.

taṃ vai sadā kāmacaramanupastīrṇaśāyinam | bāhūpadhānaṃ śāmyantaṃ praśaṃsanti divaukasaḥ ||

The gods always praise such a person, who goes where he pleases, sleeps without a bed, his arm for a pillow, at peace.

Owning nothing here means inner freedom from craving and possessiveness. It is not advice to give up work, income, food or care for those who depend on you, nor a reason to romanticise real poverty.

Meaning today and context

Peace is not in the softness of the bed but in the quiet of the mind.

Mahabharata 12.170.13: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): the gods praise the one who moves as he wishes, sleeps on the bare ground with his arm for a pillow, and is at peace.

12.170.14 Shampaka

dhanavānkrodhalobhābhyāmāviṣṭo naṣṭacetanaḥ | tiryagīkṣaḥ śuṣkamukhaḥ pāpako bhrukuṭīmukhaḥ ||

The rich man, seized by anger and greed, loses his good sense; he looks askance, his mouth is dry, he is mean-spirited, his face set in a frown.

This describes greed and anger, not every person with money; it is not a licence to judge or despise the wealthy.

Meaning today and context

Greed and anger show on the face and in the eyes. Wealth that feeds them makes a person smaller, not greater.

Mahabharata 12.170.14: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma) describes the rich man gripped by anger and greed: his judgement lost, glancing sideways, dry-mouthed, mean, scowling.

12.170.15 Shampaka

nirdaśaṃścādharoṣṭhaṃ ca kruddho dāruṇabhāṣitā | kastamicchetparidraṣṭuṃ dātumicchati cenmahīm ||

Biting his lower lip, angry, speaking harshly: who would wish even to look at him, even if he were ready to give away the earth?

Meaning today and context

No amount of wealth makes harshness and anger attractive. People are drawn to warmth, not to riches.

Mahabharata 12.170.15: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma) continues: biting his lower lip, angry, harsh in speech, who would want even to look at such a man, even if he offered the whole earth?

12.170.16 Shampaka

śriyā hyabhīkṣṇaṃ saṃvāso mohayatyavicakṣaṇam | sā tasya cittaṃ harati śāradābhramivānilaḥ ||

Constant dwelling with Fortune bewilders the person who lacks discernment; she carries off his mind as the wind carries off an autumn cloud.

Meaning today and context

Long prosperity can quietly erode judgement. Without discernment, comfort carries the mind away.

Mahabharata 12.170.16: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): constant living with prosperity bewilders the undiscerning; it carries away his mind as wind carries an autumn cloud.

12.170.17 Shampaka

athainaṃ rūpamānaśca dhanamānaśca vindati | abhijāto'smi siddho'smi nāsmi kevalamānuṣaḥ | ityebhiḥ kāraṇaistasya tribhiścittaṃ prasicyate ||

Then pride in his looks and pride in his wealth take hold of him: 'I am well-born, I am successful, I am no mere mortal.' By these three causes his mind is drenched in intoxication.

Meaning today and context

Pride in family, success and looks can make us feel above others. Noticing these thoughts is the first step out of them.

Mahabharata 12.170.17: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): then pride in looks and pride in wealth take hold of him: 'I am high-born, I am accomplished, I am no ordinary human'; by these three causes his mind becomes intoxicated.

sa prasiktamanā bhogānvisṛjya pitṛsaṃcitān | parikṣīṇaḥ parasvānāmādānaṃ sādhu manyate ||

With his mind so intoxicated, he squanders on pleasures the wealth his fathers gathered; and when he is ruined, he thinks taking what belongs to others is right.

Meaning today and context

Pride and indulgence can waste what others built and then push a person into dishonesty. One slide leads to the next.

Mahabharata 12.170.18: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): intoxicated, he squanders the wealth his ancestors gathered on pleasures, and when ruined, thinks taking others' property is fine.

12.170.19 Shampaka

tamatikrāntamaryādamādadānaṃ tatastataḥ | pratiṣedhanti rājāno lubdhā mṛgamiveṣubhiḥ ||

Him who has crossed every boundary and seizes from here and there, kings restrain, as hunters bring down a deer with arrows.

Meaning today and context

When greed crosses the line into taking from others, consequences follow, from the law and from life.

Mahabharata 12.170.19: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): kings stop the one who has crossed all limits and takes from here and there, as hunters stop a deer with arrows.

In this way these various sorrows, of every kind, come upon a person here, including those that arise from contact with the body.

Meaning today and context

Pain comes in many forms: physical, mental, from our own choices and from others. Knowing this prepares us to meet it.

Mahabharata 12.170.20: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): in this way all these many sorrows, including those born of bodily contact, come upon a human being here.

For these great sorrows one should apply the medicine of understanding, having grasped the way of the world, in which the lasting comes together with the fleeting.

Understanding is one medicine, not the only one. For grief, depression or crisis, please also seek people and professional help; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Understanding is medicine for pain: seeing clearly that change and loss are part of how the world works helps us bear them without being crushed.

Mahabharata 12.170.21: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma): for these great sorrows one should apply the remedy of understanding, knowing the way of the world: that the lasting comes mixed with the passing.

nātyaktvā sukhamāpnoti nātyaktvā vindate param | nātyaktvā cābhayaḥ śete tyaktvā sarvaṃ sukhī bhava ||

Without giving up, one does not gain happiness; without giving up, one does not reach the highest; without giving up, one does not sleep free of fear. Give up everything and be happy.

'Give up everything' means letting go of clinging, not abandoning family, work, health care or dependants.

Happiness and fearlessness come from loosening our grip, on things, outcomes and grudges, more than from holding on tighter.

Mahabharata 12.170.22: Shamyaka, as Bhishma reports his words (the canonical speaker is Bhishma)'s conclusion: without letting go one does not find happiness, nor the highest, nor sleep free of fear; let go of everything and be happy.

12.170.23 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

ityetaddhāstinapure brāhmaṇenopavarṇitam | śamyākena purā mahyaṃ tasmāttyāgaḥ paro mataḥ ||

This was described to me long ago in Hastinapura by the brahmin Shamyaka; therefore renunciation is considered supreme.

Renunciation here is inner letting go; it is not advice to abandon family or responsibilities.

Bhishma, a prince and warrior, carried this beggar's teaching with him for life. Wisdom can come from those with nothing.

Mahabharata 12.170.23: Bhishma closes: this is what the brahmin Shamyaka told him long ago in Hastinapura, and so renunciation is held to be the highest.
