12.171.1 Yudhishthira to Bhishma

īhamānaḥ samārambhānyadi nāsādayeddhanam | dhanatṛṣṇābhibhūtaśca kiṃ kurvansukhamāpnuyāt ||

If a man who keeps striving through one undertaking after another does not obtain wealth, and is overpowered by thirst for wealth, by doing what can he find happiness?

Meaning today and context

This is the question of anyone whose hard work has not paid off and who still cannot stop wanting. Bhishma's answer does not promise the money; it changes where happiness is looked for.

Yudhishthira asks Bhishma (12.171.1): what should a person do to be happy when all his efforts fail to bring wealth and he is still consumed by the thirst for it?

12.171.2 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

sarvasāmyamanāyāsaḥ satyavākyaṃ ca bhārata | nirvedaścāvivitsā ca yasya syātsa sukhī naraḥ ||

Even regard for all, freedom from strain, truthful speech, O Bharata, disenchantment, and no craving to acquire: the man who has these is happy.

Meaning today and context

Happiness here is not a bank balance but a way of being: treating people evenly, not driving yourself ragged, being honest, seeing through the chase, and not always needing more.

Bhishma answers Yudhishthira (12.171.2) with five marks of a happy person.

12.171.3 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

etānyeva padānyāhuḥ pañca vṛddhāḥ praśāntaye | eṣa svargaśca dharmaśca sukhaṃ cānuttamaṃ satām ||

The elders call these very five the steps to tranquillity. This is heaven, this is dharma, this is the unsurpassed happiness of the good.

Meaning today and context

Peace is described as a path with steps you can actually take, not a reward somewhere else. What the wise call heaven is a quality of the life you live now.

Bhishma (12.171.3) calls those five marks the steps to peace that the elders taught.

12.171.4 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | nirvedānmaṅkinā gītaṃ tannibodha yudhiṣṭhira ||

On this too they tell this ancient story, the song Mankin sang out of disenchantment. Hear it, Yudhishthira.

Meaning today and context

Bhishma answers with a story about a real failure, which often teaches more than a rule.

Bhishma (12.171.4) introduces the old story of Mankin, who sang a song out of disenchantment.

12.171.5 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

īhamāno dhanaṃ maṅkirbhagnehaśca punaḥ punaḥ | kena ciddhanaśeṣeṇa krītavāndamyagoyugam ||

Mankin sought wealth, and again and again his efforts were broken. With some last remnant of his money he bought a pair of young bullocks to be trained.

Meaning today and context

A familiar story: repeated failure, and a last small bet on which everything rides.

Bhishma tells the story (12.171.5): Mankin's attempts to make money keep failing, and he spends what little is left on two young bullocks.

12.171.6 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

susaṃbaddhau tu tau damyau damanāyābhiniḥsṛtau | āsīnamuṣṭraṃ madhyena sahasaivābhyadhāvatām ||

The two bullocks, yoked tightly together and led out to be broken in, suddenly charged at a camel that was sitting down, so that it came between them.

Meaning today and context

The story turns on a sudden accident that no planning could have prevented.

Bhishma continues the story (12.171.6): the yoked bullocks bolt and run at a camel.

12.171.7 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

tayoḥ saṃprāptayoruṣṭraḥ skandhadeśamamarṣaṇaḥ | utthāyotkṣipya tau damyau prasasāra mahājavaḥ ||

As they reached it, the camel, enraged, rose up, lifted the two bullocks on its shoulders, and ran off at great speed.

Meaning today and context

Mankin's last investment is literally carried away in front of him.

Bhishma continues (12.171.7): the angry camel rises with the bullocks hanging from its shoulders and runs off.

12.171.8 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

hriyamāṇau tu tau damyau tenoṣṭreṇa pramāthinā | mriyamāṇau ca saṃprekṣya maṅkistatrābravīdidam ||

Seeing his two bullocks carried off by that violent camel and dying, Mankin then said this:

Meaning today and context

What follows is what a man says to himself at the moment of total loss.

Bhishma continues (12.171.8): seeing his bullocks dying, Mankin begins to speak; the song that follows is his.

12.171.9 Manki

na caivāvihitaṃ śakyaṃ dakṣeṇāpīhituṃ dhanam | yuktena śraddhayā samyagīhāṃ samanutiṣṭhatā ||

Wealth that is not ordained cannot be gained even by a capable man, even one who strives rightly, with diligence and faith.

Mankin speaks in the bitterness of a fresh loss. This is his cry, not a teaching that effort is useless; the epic elsewhere honours effort. If a financial loss has left you hopeless, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Sometimes you do everything right and it still does not work out. Admitting that results are not fully in your hands can end the self-blame that follows a loss.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: wealth that is not destined cannot be won even by skill and devoted effort.

kṛtasya pūrvaṃ cānarthairyuktasyāpyanutiṣṭhataḥ | imaṃ paśyata saṃgatyā mama daivamupaplavam ||

I had done my part before, and kept at it diligently even when beset by misfortunes; yet look at this calamity fate has brought me by a mere chance encounter.

Mankin speaks in the bitterness of a fresh loss. This is his cry, not a teaching that effort is useless; the epic elsewhere honours effort. If a financial loss has left you hopeless, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is the honest voice of someone hit by bad luck after real effort. Naming that it was chance, and not a personal failing, is often where recovery begins.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: he did all he could, kept at it through setbacks, and a chance event still ruined him.

udyamyodyamya me damyau viṣameṇeva gacchati | utkṣipya kākatālīyamunmātheneva jambukaḥ ||

Again and again it heaves my bullocks up and lurches on as if over rough ground. It has caught them up by pure chance, like the crow and the falling palm fruit, as a jackal is caught in a trap.

Mankin speaks in the bitterness of a fresh loss. This is his cry, not a teaching that effort is useless; the epic elsewhere honours effort. If a financial loss has left you hopeless, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

"Like the crow and the palm fruit" (kākatālīya) is the Indian phrase for pure coincidence. Some losses really are just that, and seeing it can ease the urge to find someone to blame.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth, describing the camel carrying off his bullocks as a freak chance.

maṇī voṣṭrasya lambete priyau vatsatarau mama | śuddhaṃ hi daivamevedamato naivāsti pauruṣam ||

My two dear young bullocks hang from the camel like a pair of pendants. This is fate, pure and simple; so there is no such thing as human effort.

Mankin speaks in the bitterness of a fresh loss. This is his cry, not a teaching that effort is useless; the epic elsewhere honours effort. If a financial loss has left you hopeless, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

In shock, it is natural to feel that nothing we do matters. The story records this feeling honestly, and then lets Mankin move past it to a deeper answer.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth, watching his bullocks dangle from the camel, concludes in his despair that only fate acts.

yadi vāpyupapadyeta pauruṣaṃ nāma karhi cit | anviṣyamāṇaṃ tadapi daivamevāvatiṣṭhate ||

And even if something called human effort ever seems to come about, when you look into it, that too turns out to be fate.

Mankin speaks in the bitterness of a fresh loss. This is his cry, not a teaching that effort is useless; the epic elsewhere honours effort. If a financial loss has left you hopeless, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much of what we take credit for depended on conditions we did not make. Seeing this can make us humbler in success and gentler with ourselves in failure; it does not mean we should stop trying.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: even what looks like the result of effort turns out, on inspection, to be fate.

tasmānnirveda eveha gantavyaḥ sukhamīpsatā | sukhaṃ svapiti nirviṇṇo nirāśaścārthasādhane ||

So one who wants happiness should come to disenchantment here and now. The disenchanted man sleeps in peace, free of hope in the pursuit of gain.

Giving up desire here means inner freedom from craving, not leaving work, family, or the care of those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

Not caring how things turn out is not the point; it is that once you stop staking your peace on the next gain, you can sleep. Many sleepless nights are about money we are still chasing.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth, drawing his conclusion: whoever wants happiness must reach disenchantment with the chase.

aho samyakśukenoktaṃ sarvataḥ parimucyatā | pratiṣṭhatā mahāraṇyaṃ janakasya niveśanāt ||

Ah, how rightly Shuka put it, freed from everything, as he set out from Janaka's palace for the great forest:

Meaning today and context

Mankin finds words for his own loss in the saying of a sage, as people often find comfort in a line they remember at the right moment.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth, recalling what the sage Shuka said as he left King Janaka's palace for the forest.

yaḥ kāmānprāpnuyātsarvānyaścainānkevalāṃstyajet | prāpaṇātsarvakāmānāṃ parityāgo viśiṣyate ||

Of the one who obtains all his desires and the one who simply gives them all up, giving up is far better than obtaining every desire.

Giving up desire here means inner freedom from craving, not leaving work, family, or the care of those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

Getting everything you want does not end wanting; letting a want go ends it. Sometimes the freer choice is to drop the wish, not chase it.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth, quoting Shuka: giving up desires is greater than gaining them all.

nāntaṃ sarvavivitsānāṃ gatapūrvo'sti kaścana | śarīre jīvite caiva tṛṣṇā mandasya vardhate ||

No one has ever yet reached the end of all the cravings to acquire. For the foolish, thirst for the body and for life only keeps growing.

Meaning today and context

There is no finish line for wanting; each goal reached opens the next. Seeing that clearly is the first step to stepping off the treadmill.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: no one has ever come to the end of wanting more; the fool's thirst only grows.

nivartasva vivitsābhyaḥ śāmya nirvidya māmaka | asakṛccāsi nikṛto na ca nirvidyase tano ||

Turn back from your cravings to acquire; grow weary of them, my poor self, and be at peace. Again and again you have been cheated, and still you are not weary of it, O body.

Meaning today and context

We keep returning to what has hurt us before: the same scheme, the same habit. Talking to yourself honestly, as Mankin does, can help you finally say enough.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth, now addressing himself: turn back from craving and be calm; you have been cheated so often.

yadi nāhaṃ vināśyaste yadyevaṃ ramase mayā | mā māṃ yojaya lobhena vṛthā tvaṃ vittakāmuka ||

If I am not to be ruined by you, if you really take delight in me, then do not yoke me to greed for nothing, you lover of wealth.

Meaning today and context

Part of us is on our side and part of us drives us into harm. Naming the greedy part and refusing to be harnessed by it is a real inner practice.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth, pleading with his own wealth-loving mind not to yoke him to greed for nothing.

saṃcitaṃ saṃcitaṃ dravyaṃ naṣṭaṃ tava punaḥ punaḥ | kadā vimokṣyase mūḍha dhanehāṃ dhanakāmuka ||

Again and again the wealth you piled up and piled up has been lost. When will you give up this striving after wealth, you fool, you lover of money?

Not financial advice. If losing money has left you feeling worthless or hopeless, please talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

If the same pursuit keeps ending in loss, the question may not be how to try harder but whether this pursuit is worth your life.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: the wealth he piled up was lost again and again; when will he let go of chasing it?

aho nu mama bāliśyaṃ yo'haṃ krīḍanakastava | kiṃ naiva jātu puruṣaḥ pareṣāṃ preṣyatāmiyāt ||

Ah, how childish I have been, to be your plaything! Would a man ever become a servant of others like this?

Meaning today and context

Seeing that a craving has been running you is humbling, but it is also the start of freedom. Laughing at your own foolishness is healthier than despising yourself.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: he sees how foolish he has been to be Desire's plaything.

na pūrve nāpare jātu kāmānāmantamāpnuvan | tyaktvā sarvasamārambhānpratibuddho'smi jāgṛmi ||

No one before, and no one after, has ever reached the end of desires. Giving up all my schemes, I have woken up; I am awake.

Giving up desire here means inner freedom from craving, not leaving work, family, or the care of those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

Waking up here means seeing that desire is endless, and no longer letting it set your course. You can still work; you stop working for a finish line that does not exist.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: no one before or after has reached the end of desires; giving up the chase, he has woken up.

The happiness we chase outside often turns out to be available within, in a settled and contented mind. This is a turn of attention, not a rejection of the world.

Meaning today and context

A craving grows from the thoughts we keep feeding it: planning, imagining, replaying. Stopping the rehearsal starves it; this is one of the clearest lines on desire in the epic.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: he knows Desire's root is intention (saṃkalpa), and will stop feeding it.

Money worries come in every phase: getting it, keeping it, losing it. Knowing this frees you from imagining that the next sum will finally bring peace.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: chasing wealth is no joy, having it brings more worry, losing it is like death.

For one who strives to the utmost and does not obtain, what could be more painful? And one who does obtain is not content with it, but goes seeking still more.

Meaning today and context

Whether you fail or succeed, the chase itself keeps you unhappy. Contentment, not more success, is what breaks the cycle.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: failing to get what you strove for is bitter, and getting it never satisfies.

Some things are pleasant precisely in a way that leaves you wanting more. Recognising that pattern in money, food, screens or praise is the start of control.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: wealth only sharpens thirst, like sweet Ganges water; he has woken up and tells Desire to let go.

This is not indifference to life, but loosening the grip of 'what will happen to me'. A person can care for the body and still not be ruled by fear of losing it.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: let the elements that make up his body go or stay as they please; he is no longer bound to them.

Meaning today and context

This names a hard truth: after financial loss, the hurt often comes from how others treat us. Knowing it is common can make it less shameful, and shows who our real friends are.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: losing wealth is the greatest sorrow, because kin and friends then look down on you.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: poverty brings thousands of humiliations, and even the bit of happiness wealth brings is mixed with sorrow.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: wealth makes a man a target for robbers who torment and terrify him.

nirvedaṃ nirvṛtiṃ tṛptiṃ śāntiṃ satyaṃ damaṃ kṣamām | sarvabhūtadayāṃ caiva viddhi māṃ śaraṇāgatam ||

Know that I have taken refuge in disenchantment, inner peace, contentment, calm, truth, self-restraint, forbearance, and compassion for all beings.

Meaning today and context

When outer supports fail, these inner qualities are a refuge no one can take away: contentment, honesty, self-control, patience, kindness.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: he lists the qualities he has taken refuge in.

tasmātkāmaśca lobhaśca tṛṣṇā kārpaṇyameva ca | tyajantu māṃ pratiṣṭhantaṃ sattvastho hyasmi sāṃpratam ||

So let desire and greed, thirst and meanness leave me as I set out, for now I stand firm in clarity.

Meaning today and context

Starting afresh means leaving certain habits of heart behind: grasping, greed, stinginess. A clearer mind is what makes that possible.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: desire, greed, thirst and meanness should leave him as he sets out; he now stands in clarity (sattva).

prahāya kāmaṃ lobhaṃ ca krodhaṃ pāruṣyameva ca | nādya lobhavaśaṃ prāpto duḥkhaṃ prāpsyāmyanātmavān ||

Having cast off desire and greed, anger and harshness, I will not now fall under greed's sway and, losing my self-mastery, come to sorrow.

Meaning today and context

Anger and harsh words often travel with greed. Letting go of one tends to loosen the others, and saves us much of the sorrow we bring on ourselves.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: having given up desire, greed, anger and harshness, he will not again fall into sorrow under greed's power.

yadyattyajati kāmānāṃ tatsukhasyābhipūryate | kāmasya vaśago nityaṃ duḥkhameva prapadyate ||

Whatever desire a person gives up, by that much his happiness is filled. One always at the mercy of desire meets only sorrow.

Meaning today and context

Each want you drop is one less thing your peace depends on. You do not have to give up everything; even one craving let go makes life lighter.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: whatever desire one gives up, by that much one's happiness becomes full.

kāmānvyudasya dhunute yatkiṃ citpuruṣo rajaḥ | kāmakrodhodbhavaṃ duḥkhamahrīraratireva ca ||

By casting off desires a person shakes off whatever dust there is: the sorrow born of desire and anger, shamelessness and discontent.

Meaning today and context

Much of our restlessness and the things we later regret come from desire and anger. Letting desires go is like shaking dust off: you feel cleaner and lighter.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: casting off desires, a person shakes off the dust of sorrow, shamelessness and discontent.

eṣa brahmapraviṣṭo'haṃ grīṣme śītamiva hradam | śāmyāmi parinirvāmi sukhamāse ca kevalam ||

Here I am, entered into Brahman like a cool lake in summer. I grow calm, I am wholly at peace, and I sit in happiness alone.

Meaning today and context

The relief of letting go of craving is like stepping into cool water on a hot day. That sense of ease is possible, even if only for moments at first.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: he has entered Brahman like a cool lake in summer and is at rest.

yacca kāmasukhaṃ loke yacca divyaṃ mahatsukham | tṛṣṇākṣayasukhasyaite nārhataḥ ṣoḍaśīṃ kalām ||

Whatever pleasure of desire there is in the world, and whatever great happiness there is in heaven, these are not worth a sixteenth part of the happiness of craving's end.

Meaning today and context

The deepest relief is not getting what we crave but no longer craving it. This famous verse puts all worldly pleasures below the joy of being free from thirst.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: all pleasures of this world and heaven are not worth a sixteenth of the joy of ending craving.

ātmanā saptamaṃ kāmaṃ hatvā śatrumivottamam | prāpyāvadhyaṃ brahmapuraṃ rājeva syāmahaṃ sukhī ||

Having slain with my own self desire, the seventh, like a foremost enemy, and reached the unassailable city of Brahman, I shall be happy as a king.

"Slaying" desire is an image for inner mastery; it is not about harming anyone or oneself.

Meaning today and context

Mastering desire is pictured as winning a kingdom that cannot be taken. The real sovereignty is over one's own wants.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: having slain desire, the seventh enemy, he will dwell happy as a king in the city of Brahman.

12.171.53 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

etāṃ buddhiṃ samāsthāya maṅkirnirvedamāgataḥ | sarvānkāmānparityajya prāpya brahma mahatsukham ||

Holding to this understanding, Mankin came to disenchantment; giving up all desires, he attained Brahman, the great happiness.

Giving up desire here means inner freedom from craving, not leaving work, family, or the care of those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

A change of understanding, more than a change of fortune, turned Mankin's ruin into peace.

Bhishma (12.171.53) tells how Mankin's story ended: holding to this understanding, he reached disenchantment and great happiness.

12.171.54 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

damyanāśakṛte maṅkiramaratvaṃ kilāgamat | acchinatkāmamūlaṃ sa tena prāpa mahatsukham ||

Through the loss of his bullocks, it is said, Mankin reached immortality. He cut the root of desire, and by that he won great happiness.

Meaning today and context

The very loss that seemed to ruin him became the door to freedom, because he let it cut the root of craving rather than feed it.

Bhishma (12.171.54) sums up: through losing his bullocks Mankin cut the root of desire and found great happiness.

12.171.55 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | gītaṃ videharājena janakena praśāmyatā ||

On this too they tell this ancient story, sung by Janaka, king of Videha, who was at peace:

Meaning today and context

Bhishma adds the example of a king, to show that this freedom is not only for the poor.

Bhishma (12.171.55) introduces a second example, a saying of King Janaka of Videha.

12.171.56 Janaka

anantaṃ bata me vittaṃ yasya me nāsti kiṃ cana | mithilāyāṃ pradīptāyāṃ na me dahyati kiṃ cana ||

Endless, truly, is my wealth, I who own nothing. If Mithila were burning, nothing of mine would burn.

This is about inner non-attachment, not indifference to others' suffering; Janaka still ruled and protected his people. In a real fire or emergency, act and call 112.

Meaning today and context

Janaka was a working king who still ruled and cared for his city; what he owned nothing of was the sense of 'mine'. When we hold things without clinging, their loss cannot burn us the same way.

Bhishma quotes King Janaka's famous saying (12.171.56): the king who owns nothing inwardly loses nothing when his city burns.

12.171.57 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

atraivodāharantīmaṃ bodhyasya padasaṃcayam | nirvedaṃ prati vinyastaṃ pratibodha yudhiṣṭhira ||

On this too they cite the collected sayings of Bodhya, set out on disenchantment. Take them to heart, Yudhishthira.

Meaning today and context

A third witness: a sage who learned calm from ordinary teachers.

Bhishma (12.171.57) introduces a third example: the sayings of the sage Bodhya on disenchantment.

12.171.58 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

bodhyaṃ dāntamṛṣiṃ rājā nahuṣaḥ paryapṛcchata | nirvedācchāntimāpannaṃ śāntaṃ prajñānatarpitam ||

King Nahusha questioned the self-controlled sage Bodhya, who through disenchantment had found peace, calm and filled with wisdom.

Meaning today and context

A king asks a sage for the secret of his calm; position and power do not give peace.

Bhishma (12.171.58) sets the scene: King Nahusha questions the calm sage Bodhya.

12.171.59 Nahusha to Bodhya

upadeśaṃ mahāprājña śamasyopadiśasva me | kāṃ buddhiṃ samanudhyāya śāntaścarasi nirvṛtaḥ ||

Great and wise one, give me a teaching on calm. Dwelling on what understanding do you go about so calm and content?

Meaning today and context

Asking someone who seems at peace how they got there is itself a step. Nahusha's question is one many people ask a calm friend or elder.

King Nahusha speaks to Bodhya (12.171.59; the canonical file gives Bhishma as speaker): he asks how the sage stays so calm.

12.171.60 Bodhya to Nahusha

upadeśena vartāmi nānuśāsmīha kaṃ cana | lakṣaṇaṃ tasya vakṣye'haṃ tatsvayaṃ pravimṛśyatām ||

I live by teachings I have received; I do not instruct anyone here. I will tell you the signs of it; reflect on them yourself.

Meaning today and context

Real wisdom often refuses to preach. It shares what it learned and leaves you to think it through yourself.

Bodhya answers King Nahusha (12.171.60): he does not instruct anyone, but will describe how he learned, for the king to reflect on.

12.171.61 Bodhya to Nahusha

piṅgalā kuraraḥ sarpaḥ sāraṅgānveṣaṇaṃ vane | iṣukāraḥ kumārī ca ṣaḍete guravo mama ||

Pingala, the osprey, the snake, the bee's searching in the forest, the arrow-maker and the young girl: these six are my teachers.

Meaning today and context

Lessons in peace can come from anywhere: a woman who gave up hope, a bird that dropped its prey, a craftsman lost in his work. Watching life closely can teach as much as any book.

Bodhya names his six teachers to Nahusha (12.171.61): ordinary beings and people from whose behaviour he learned calm.
