12.172.1 Yudhishthira to Bhishma

kena vṛttena vṛttajña vītaśokaścarenmahīm | kiṃ ca kurvannaro loke prāpnoti paramāṃ gatim ||

O knower of right conduct, by what way of life may a person go about the earth free of sorrow? And by doing what does one in this world reach the highest goal?

Meaning today and context

This is the question many people carry quietly: how do I live without being weighed down by worry and loss, and what is life finally for?

Mahabharata 12.172.1: Yudhishthira asks Bhishma how a person can live free of sorrow and reach the highest goal. Bhishma answers with the story of Prahlada and the sage who followed the python vow (ājagara): an ascetic who, like a python, takes only what comes to him.

12.172.2 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | prahrādasya ca saṃvādaṃ munerājagarasya ca ||

On this too they recount this ancient story, the conversation between Prahlada and the sage who lived the python's way.

Meaning today and context

The answer comes as a story: we learn how to live by watching someone who lives that way.

Mahabharata 12.172.2: Bhishma introduces an old story, the dialogue of the demon-king Prahlada with a sage who lived by the python vow (ājagara): an ascetic who, like a python, takes only what comes to him.

12.172.3 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

carantaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ kaṃ citkalyacittamanāmayam | papraccha rājanprahrādo buddhimānprājñasaṃmataḥ ||

Prahlada, wise and respected by the wise, O king, questioned a certain brahmin who was wandering about, sound in mind and free of illness.

Meaning today and context

Prahlada notices someone at ease and has the humility to ask how he lives. Asking those who are at peace is itself a step.

Mahabharata 12.172.3: Bhishma, narrating, tells how Prahlada, king of the Asuras, met a wandering brahmin who was calm and healthy, and questioned him.

12.172.4 Prahlada to The python-vowed sage

svasthaḥ śakto mṛdurdānto nirvivitso'nasūyakaḥ | suvāgbahumato loke prājñaścarasi bālavat ||

You are self-possessed, able, gentle and restrained; you crave nothing, envy no one, speak well, are esteemed in the world and wise, and yet you wander about like a child.

Meaning today and context

Ability and simplicity can live together. Someone can be capable and respected without being driven, anxious or important in their own eyes.

Mahabharata 12.172.4: Prahlada (inside Bhishma's story) describes the sage: capable and well-regarded, yet living as simply as a child.

12.172.5 Prahlada to The python-vowed sage

naiva prārthayase lābhaṃ nālābheṣvanuśocasi | nityatṛpta iva brahmanna kiṃ cidavamanyase ||

You do not long for gain, nor do you grieve over losses. As if always content, O brahmin, you look down on nothing.

Meaning today and context

Peace here is not having everything; it is not being thrown by gain or loss, and not despising what is small or plain.

Mahabharata 12.172.5: Prahlada continues describing the sage: he neither chases gain nor grieves over loss.

12.172.6 Prahlada to The python-vowed sage

srotasā hriyamāṇāsu prajāsvavimanā iva | dharmakāmārthakāryeṣu kūṭastha iva lakṣyase ||

While people are being carried away by the current, you seem untroubled. In matters of dharma, desire and wealth you appear to stand unmoved, like an anvil.

Meaning today and context

Most of us are pulled along by the rush of wanting and doing. It is possible to stay steady in the middle of it.

Mahabharata 12.172.6: Prahlada observes that while everyone is swept along by life's current, the sage stays unmoved.

12.172.7 Prahlada to The python-vowed sage

nānutiṣṭhasi dharmārthau na kāme cāpi vartase | indriyārthānanādṛtya muktaścarasi sākṣivat ||

You do not pursue dharma or wealth, nor do you live for pleasure. Paying no heed to the objects of the senses, you move about free, like a witness.

This describes a renunciate. For most people it means inner freedom, not giving up duties, work or family.

Meaning today and context

There is a way of being that watches life without being owned by its pursuits. Even a little of that witness-sense can loosen anxiety.

Mahabharata 12.172.7: Prahlada notes that the sage pursues none of the usual aims of life and seems to watch the world like a witness.

12.172.8 Prahlada to The python-vowed sage

kā nu prajñā śrutaṃ vā kiṃ vṛttirvā kā nu te mune | kṣipramācakṣva me brahmañśreyo yadiha manyase ||

What is your wisdom, what is your learning, what is your way of life, O sage? Tell me quickly, brahmin, what you consider the good here.

Meaning today and context

When we meet someone truly at peace, the right response is to ask, humbly and eagerly, how they see things.

Mahabharata 12.172.8: Prahlada asks the sage directly what wisdom, learning and way of life lie behind his calm.

12.172.9 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

anuyuktaḥ sa medhāvī lokadharmavidhānavit | uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā prahrādamanapārthayā ||

So questioned, that intelligent one, who knew the ways of the world and its duties, spoke to Prahlada in gentle words full of meaning.

Meaning today and context

The sage answers gently and to the point; wisdom is often quiet in its speech.

Mahabharata 12.172.9: Bhishma narrates that the sage, so questioned, began to answer Prahlada.

12.172.10 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

paśyanprahrāda bhūtānāmutpattimanimittataḥ | hrāsaṃ vṛddhiṃ vināśaṃ ca na prahṛṣye na ca vyathe ||

Seeing, Prahlada, that beings come into being without any cause I can point to, and seeing their decline, growth and destruction, I neither rejoice nor suffer.

Meaning today and context

Things begin and end in ways we don't control. Seeing that clearly can take the edge off both elation and distress.

Mahabharata 12.172.10: The python-vow sage (inside Bhishma's story) begins his answer: he sees beings arise, grow and perish of themselves, and so is neither elated nor pained.

12.172.11 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

svabhāvādeva saṃdṛśya vartamānāḥ pravṛttayaḥ | svabhāvaniratāḥ sarvāḥ paritapye na kena cit ||

Seeing that all activities go on from their own nature, and that all are bound to their own nature, I am distressed by nothing.

Meaning today and context

People and events act according to their nature. Expecting otherwise is a large source of our frustration; accepting it brings relief.

Mahabharata 12.172.11: The sage says all activity follows its own nature, so nothing distresses him.

12.172.12 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

paśyanprahrāda saṃyogānviprayogaparāyaṇān | saṃcayāṃśca vināśāntānna kva cidvidadhe manaḥ ||

Seeing, Prahlada, that all unions end in separation, and that all that is gathered ends in destruction, I do not set my heart on anything.

Meaning today and context

Every meeting carries a parting and everything we gather will scatter. Knowing this can let us love and work without clutching. It does not mean we stop caring.

Mahabharata 12.172.12: The sage says every meeting ends in parting and every gathering in loss, so he fixes his mind on nothing.

12.172.13 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

antavanti ca bhūtāni guṇayuktāni paśyataḥ | utpattinidhanajñasya kiṃ kāryamavaśiṣyate ||

For one who sees that beings, with all their qualities, come to an end, and who knows birth and death, what is left to be done?

If you are grieving or thinking about death, this verse is about seeing impermanence calmly, not about wishing to die. Please talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416 is free and available 24x7.

Meaning today and context

Much of our restless striving fades when we really take in that all things end. What remains is a quieter, clearer way of living.

jalajānāmapi hyantaṃ paryāyeṇopalakṣaye | mahatāmapi kāyānāṃ sūkṣmāṇāṃ ca mahodadhau ||

I see in due course the end even of water-born creatures, of great bodies and tiny ones alike, in the great ocean.

Meaning today and context

Size and strength do not exempt anything from ending. That is simply how the living world is.

Mahabharata 12.172.14: The sage gives examples: even in the great ocean, creatures large and small meet their end in turn.

12.172.15 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

Meaning today and context

Death is not a rare accident but part of everything alive. Seeing that steadily is meant to make us wiser, not afraid.

Mahabharata 12.172.15: The sage, addressing Prahlada as lord of the Asuras, says he sees death everywhere, in moving and unmoving beings alike.

Meaning today and context

Eating irregularly or going without food for days is the ascetic's description, not dietary or health advice. Living on what comes by chance describes a renunciate's inner freedom from craving. It is not advice to give up work, earning, food, or care for those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

The point is not how to eat but how little the sage's peace depends on what comes or doesn't come.

Mahabharata 12.172.19: The sage describes his python's way of eating: he swallows a large meal when one comes by chance, and lies without food when none comes.

Meaning today and context

Comfort and hardship come and go. A mind that can rest in either is not held hostage by circumstances.

Mahabharata 12.172.22: The sage says he sleeps wherever he finds himself: on a couch, on the ground, or even in a palace.

What we wear and own does not need to define us. The sage is the same person in rags or in silk.

Mahabharata 12.172.23: The sage says he wears whatever comes: rags, hemp, linen, deerskin, and sometimes costly garments.

Mahabharata 12.172.24: The sage states his rule: he does not refuse a rightful enjoyment that comes by chance, nor does he chase one that is hard to get.

Living on what comes by chance describes a renunciate's inner freedom from craving. It is not advice to give up work, earning, food, or care for those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

The sage values a life of not grasping as steady and free of sorrow, though the world does not prize it. Contentment rarely looks impressive from outside.

Mahabharata 12.172.25: The sage praises the python vow (the first of a series of verses ending 'this python vow I practise, pure'): steady, sorrowless, valued by the wise and ignored by the deluded.

Meaning today and context

Not grasping does not mean not caring: the sage stays true to his own duty. Freedom from fear and greed comes with a steady commitment, not instead of it.

Meaning today and context

The real target of the vow is the thirsty, restless mind. Simplicity is a way of calming that thirst, not a goal in itself.
