12.169.1 Yudhishthira to Bhishma

atikrāmati kāle'sminsarvabhūtakṣayāvahe | kiṃ śreyaḥ pratipadyeta tanme brūhi pitāmaha ||

Yudhishthira said: As this time passes, which brings destruction to all beings, what should one take up as the highest good? Tell me that, grandfather.

Meaning today and context

It is the question behind many restless nights: time is running out, so what is actually worth doing? Asking it honestly is the first step.

Mahabharata 12.169.1: Yudhishthira asks Bhishma what a person should take up as truly good while time, which brings the end of all beings, keeps slipping by.

12.169.2 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | pituḥ putreṇa saṃvādaṃ tannibodha yudhiṣṭhira ||

Bhishma said: On this, people recite this ancient account, the conversation of a father with his son. Listen to it, Yudhishthira.

Meaning today and context

Bhishma answers a big question with a story rather than a rule. Some truths are easier to hear through the lives of others.

Mahabharata 12.169.2: Bhishma answers by telling an old story, a conversation between a father and his son.

12.169.3 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

dvijāteḥ kasya citpārtha svādhyāyaniratasya vai | babhūva putro medhāvī medhāvī nāma nāmataḥ ||

Partha, a certain twice-born man, devoted to the study of the Veda, had a son who was intelligent, and Medhavin ('the intelligent one') was in fact his name.

Meaning today and context

The story opens in an ordinary home: a dutiful father and a thoughtful son. The lesson will come from the younger one.

Mahabharata 12.169.3: Bhishma introduces the characters: a learned brahmin devoted to Vedic study and his intelligent son, named Medhavin.

12.169.4 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

so'bravītpitaraṃ putraḥ svādhyāyakaraṇe ratam | mokṣadharmārthakuśalo lokatattvavicakṣaṇaḥ ||

That son, skilled in the meaning of the dharma of liberation and discerning about the truth of the world, said to his father, who was absorbed in his Vedic recitation:

Meaning today and context

Wisdom does not always come with age. Sometimes a child sees what the parent, busy with routine, has missed.

Mahabharata 12.169.4: Bhishma says the son, skilled in the meaning of the dharma of liberation and clear about how the world really is, spoke to his father, who was absorbed in Vedic recitation.

12.169.5 The son to The father

dhīraḥ kiṃ svittāta kuryātprajānankṣipraṃ hyāyurbhraśyate mānavānām | pitastadācakṣva yathārthayogaṃ mamānupūrvyā yena dharmaṃ careyam ||

Father, knowing this, what should a steady, wise person do, since the life of human beings slips away so fast? Tell me, father, the way that truly fits, so that I may practise dharma in its right order.

Meaning today and context

Life is short, and a thoughtful person wants to know how to spend it well, not just to keep busy. It is right to ask those older than us for a clear path.

Mahabharata 12.169.5: The son Medhavin asks his father: since human life slips away so quickly, what should a wise person do? He asks for the true path, step by step. (The canonical speaker here is Bhishma, but the words are the son's.)

12.169.6 The father to The son

vedānadhītya brahmacaryeṇa putra putrānicchetpāvanārthaṃ pitṝṇām | agnīnādhāya vidhivacceṣṭayajño vanaṃ praviśyātha munirbubhūṣet ||

Son, having studied the Vedas as a celibate student, one should wish for sons to purify one's ancestors; having set up the sacred fires and performed sacrifices properly, one should then enter the forest and seek to become a sage.

Meaning today and context

The father offers the safe, conventional plan: do everything in its time, and spiritual life can wait until later. Many of us live by this plan without asking whether later will come.

Mahabharata 12.169.6: The father gives the traditional answer: the stages of life in order: study, family, ritual duties, and finally the forest life of a sage.

12.169.7 The son to The father

evamabhyāhate loke samantātparivārite | amoghāsu patantīṣu kiṃ dhīra iva bhāṣase ||

When the world is struck like this, surrounded on every side, and unfailing things keep falling, how can you speak as if you were at ease?

Meaning today and context

Sometimes our calm is not wisdom but not noticing. The son asks his father to see the urgency of life.

Mahabharata 12.169.7: The son challenges his father: the world is under attack and surrounded on all sides, and unfailing things keep falling; how can you speak so calmly?

12.169.8 The father to The son

kathamabhyāhato lokaḥ kena vā parivāritaḥ | amoghāḥ kāḥ patantīha kiṃ nu bhīṣayasīva mām ||

How is the world struck, and by what is it surrounded? What are these unfailing things that fall here? Why do you seem to be trying to frighten me?

Meaning today and context

The father's puzzled reply is honest: we often do not see what is obvious once it is pointed out.

Mahabharata 12.169.8: The father, puzzled, asks the son what he means: struck by what, surrounded by what, and what is falling? Why is he frightening him?

12.169.9 The son to The father

mṛtyunābhyāhato loko jarayā parivāritaḥ | ahorātrāḥ patantyete nanu kasmānna budhyase ||

The world is struck by death and surrounded by old age; these days and nights are what keep falling. Why do you not wake up to this?

These verses on death are meant to wake a person up to how they use their time, not to frighten anyone. If thoughts of death feel heavy or you feel unsafe, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Each day that passes is gone for good, like an arrow that never misses. Seeing this clearly is not meant to depress us but to make us use our days well.

Mahabharata 12.169.9: The son explains: the world is struck by death and surrounded by old age; the unfailing things that fall are the days and nights.

12.169.10 The son to The father

yadāhametajjānāmi na mṛtyustiṣṭhatīti ha | so'haṃ kathaṃ pratīkṣiṣye jālenāpihitaścaran ||

Since I know that death does not stand still, how can I wait around, moving about as one caught under a net?

These verses on death are meant to wake a person up to how they use their time, not to frighten anyone. If thoughts of death feel heavy or you feel unsafe, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Knowing that time will not wait, we should stop postponing what matters most. Waiting for the 'right time' can become a trap.

Mahabharata 12.169.10: The son says that since he knows death does not stand still, he cannot sit waiting as if caught in a net.

12.169.11 The son to The father

rātryāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyāmāyuralpataraṃ yadā | gādhodake matsya iva sukhaṃ vindeta kastadā | tadeva vandhyaṃ divasamiti vidyādvicakṣaṇaḥ ||

When with each night that passes life grows shorter, who could find happiness then, like a fish in shallow water? A discerning person should know such a day to be barren.

These verses on death are meant to wake a person up to how they use their time, not to frighten anyone. If thoughts of death feel heavy or you feel unsafe, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A day that passes without anything worthwhile done is a day lost from a shrinking supply. The point is not panic but making each day count.

Mahabharata 12.169.11: The son compares a person whose life shrinks with each night to a fish in shrinking water, and says the wise should count a day spent so as wasted.

12.169.12 The son to The father

anavāpteṣu kāmeṣu mṛtyurabhyeti mānavam | śaṣpāṇīva vicinvantamanyatragatamānasam | vṛkīvoraṇamāsādya mṛtyurādāya gacchati ||

While his desires are still unfulfilled, death comes upon a man. As he gathers grass, his mind turned elsewhere, death seizes him and goes, as a she-wolf seizes a ram.

These verses on death are meant to wake a person up to how they use their time, not to frighten anyone. If thoughts of death feel heavy or you feel unsafe, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

We rarely finish our list of wants before life ends. Living only to fulfil desires, absorbed and distracted, means missing what matters.

Mahabharata 12.169.12: The son says death comes to a person while their desires are still unfulfilled, like a she-wolf carrying off a ram that is grazing with its mind elsewhere.

12.169.13 The son to The father

adyaiva kuru yacchreyo mā tvā kālo'tyagādayam | akṛteṣveva kāryeṣu mṛtyurvai saṃprakarṣati ||

Do today itself what is for your good; do not let this time slip past you. While one's tasks are still undone, death drags one away.

These verses on death are meant to wake a person up to how they use their time, not to frighten anyone. If thoughts of death feel heavy or you feel unsafe, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The good we mean to do someday, an apology, a kindness, a change in habit, is best done today. Tomorrow is not promised.

Mahabharata 12.169.13: The son urges: do what is good today itself; death drags a person away while tasks are still undone.

12.169.14 The son to The father

Do tomorrow's work today, and the afternoon's work in the morning. Death does not wait to see whether one's work is done or not. For who knows on whom death's army will fall today?

This is about not postponing what matters, not about overworking or panicking over deadlines. If fear of death or of time running out feels overwhelming, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is the source of the familiar saying about not putting off till tomorrow. It applies to work, but above all to the good we want to do and the people we want to make peace with.

Mahabharata 12.169.14: The son continues: do tomorrow's work today and the afternoon's work in the morning; death does not wait to see whether one's work is done.

12.169.15 The son to The father

yuvaiva dharmaśīlaḥ syādanimittaṃ hi jīvitam | kṛte dharme bhavetkīrtiriha pretya ca vai sukham ||

One should be devoted to dharma while still young, for life has no certainty. When dharma is done, there is good name here and happiness hereafter.

Meaning today and context

Goodness is not something to save for old age. The young are not guaranteed a long life, and character built early shapes everything after.

Mahabharata 12.169.15: The son says one should practise dharma while still young, since life holds no guarantee; dharma brings good name here and happiness after death.

12.169.16 The son to The father

mohena hi samāviṣṭaḥ putradārārthamudyataḥ | kṛtvā kāryamakāryaṃ vā puṣṭimeṣāṃ prayacchati ||

Overcome by delusion, striving for the sake of children and wife, a person does what should be done and what should not, and gives them prosperity.

Caring for one's family is a duty; the verse warns only against doing wrong in the name of family.

Meaning today and context

Providing for family is good, but love can become a reason to cut corners and do wrong. Ask whether what you do for them is also right.

Mahabharata 12.169.16: The son says a person gripped by delusion works for wife and children, doing right or wrong, just to make them prosper.

12.169.17 The son to The father

taṃ putrapaśusaṃmattaṃ vyāsaktamanasaṃ naram | suptaṃ vyāghraṃ mahaugho vā mṛtyurādāya gacchati ||

That man, intoxicated with sons and cattle, his mind clinging to them, death seizes and carries off, as a great flood carries off a sleeping tiger.

These verses on death are meant to wake a person up to how they use their time, not to frighten anyone. If thoughts of death feel heavy or you feel unsafe, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Even the strong are caught unawares when they are absorbed in what they own. Possessions and family pride give a false sense of safety.

Mahabharata 12.169.17: The son says death carries off the man intoxicated with sons and cattle, his mind entangled, as a great flood sweeps away a sleeping tiger.

12.169.18 The son to The father

saṃcinvānakamevaikaṃ kāmānāmavitṛptakam | vyāghraḥ paśumivādāya mṛtyurādāya gacchati ||

The one who keeps on gathering, never satisfied with his desires, death seizes and carries off, as a tiger carries off a beast.

Saving and planning for the future are prudent; the verse is about insatiable accumulation, not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Endless accumulation never reaches 'enough'. Pause and ask what all the gathering is for.

Mahabharata 12.169.18: The son says death carries off the one who keeps accumulating, never satisfied in his desires, as a tiger carries off an animal.

12.169.19 The son to The father

idaṃ kṛtamidaṃ kāryamidamanyatkṛtākṛtam | evamīhāsukhāsaktaṃ kṛtāntaḥ kurute vaśe ||

'This is done, this is still to do, this other is half done': the one so attached to the pleasure of striving, the Ender brings under his control.

These verses on death are meant to wake a person up to how they use their time, not to frighten anyone. If thoughts of death feel heavy or you feel unsafe, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Our to-do lists never end, and life can pass entirely in ticking boxes. Being busy is not the same as living well.

Mahabharata 12.169.19: The son describes the endless to-do list: 'this is done, this must be done, this other is half done'. Death takes control of the one attached to such striving.

12.169.20 The son to The father

kṛtānāṃ phalamaprāptaṃ karmaṇāṃ phalasaṅginam | kṣetrāpaṇagṛhāsaktaṃ mṛtyurādāya gacchati ||

The one who clings to fruits not yet gained from deeds he has done, attached to fields, shop and house, death seizes and carries off.

These verses on death are meant to wake a person up to how they use their time, not to frighten anyone. If thoughts of death feel heavy or you feel unsafe, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

We often live for a future payoff: the next promotion, the next property. Life can end before that fruit arrives, so it should not be our only reason to live.

Mahabharata 12.169.20: The son says death carries off the one attached to fields, shop and house, clinging to the fruits of deeds not yet received.

12.169.21 The son to The father

mṛtyurjarā ca vyādhiśca duḥkhaṃ cānekakāraṇam | anuṣaktaṃ yadā dehe kiṃ svastha iva tiṣṭhasi ||

When death, old age, disease and suffering from many causes cling to the body, how can you stand there as if all were well?

This is not health advice. For anyone facing illness or frightened about it, care and treatment come first; if fear feels overwhelming, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The body is always exposed to illness and age. Seeing this is a reason to live wisely, not to live in fear.

Mahabharata 12.169.21: The son asks his father how he can stand at ease when death, old age, disease and suffering from many causes cling to the body.

jātamevāntako'ntāya jarā cānveti dehinam | anuṣaktā dvayenaite bhāvāḥ sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ ||

The Ender follows the embodied being from its very birth to bring its end, and old age follows too. All beings, moving and unmoving, are bound to these two.

For someone grieving, the loss comes first; this verse does not dismiss mourning. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

No one is exempt from ageing and death; it is the shared condition of everything alive. That shared condition can soften pride and deepen compassion.

Mahabharata 12.169.22: The son says the Ender follows every embodied being from birth to its end, and old age follows too; all beings, moving and unmoving, are bound to these two.

mṛtyorvā gṛhamevaitadyā grāme vasato ratiḥ | devānāmeṣa vai goṣṭho yadaraṇyamiti śrutiḥ ||

The delight of one who dwells in the village is the very house of death; the forest is the cowpen of the gods, so scripture says.

This is a renunciate's view of home and family. For most people it means inner freedom from clinging, not leaving home or abandoning family, work or dependants.

Meaning today and context

The point is the trap of comfortable routine and clinging, not a place. Even at home one can make room for quiet, simplicity and reflection.

Mahabharata 12.169.23: The son says the pleasure of living settled in the village is the very house of death, while the forest, scripture says, is the cowpen of the gods.

12.169.24 The son to The father

nibandhanī rajjureṣā yā grāme vasato ratiḥ | chittvaināṃ sukṛto yānti naināṃ chindanti duṣkṛtaḥ ||

The delight of dwelling in the village is a binding rope. Those who do good cut it and go on; those who do evil do not cut it.

This is a renunciate's view of home and family. For most people it means inner freedom from clinging, not leaving home or abandoning family, work or dependants.

Meaning today and context

Clinging to comfort and routine ties us down. Freedom means loosening that rope inwardly, so that we can act rightly when it matters.

Mahabharata 12.169.24: The son says attachment to village life is a binding rope; the virtuous cut it and go on, the wrongdoers do not.

One who does not harm living beings by mind, speech or body is not bound by deeds that take away others' lives and goods.

Meaning today and context

Harm can be done in thought and word, not only by hand. A life that avoids harming others in all three ways stays free of the weight such harm brings.

Mahabharata 12.169.25: The son says one who does not harm living beings by thought, word or deed is not bound by acts that take away life and property.

12.169.26 The son to The father

Meaning today and context

We cannot stop time, but we can live by truth. A life rooted in honesty has something that does not die with the body.

tasmātsatyavratācāraḥ satyayogaparāyaṇaḥ | satyārāmaḥ samo dāntaḥ satyenaivāntakaṃ jayet ||

Therefore, keeping truth as one's vow and conduct, devoted to the discipline of truth, delighting in truth, even-minded and self-controlled, one should conquer the Ender by truth alone.

Meaning today and context

Make honesty not a rule you sometimes keep but the way you live and what you enjoy. Steadiness and self-control grow with it.

Mahabharata 12.169.27: The son concludes that one should make truth one's vow, practice and delight, be even and self-controlled, and so conquer death by truth alone.

amṛtaṃ caiva mṛtyuśca dvayaṃ dehe pratiṣṭhitam | mṛtyumāpadyate mohātsatyenāpadyate'mṛtam ||

Both the deathless and death are set within the body. One reaches death through delusion; one reaches the deathless through truth.

Meaning today and context

The choice between a deadening life and a living one lies within us. Delusion narrows us; truth opens us.

Mahabharata 12.169.28: The son says both immortality and death are placed in the body; one reaches death through delusion and the deathless through truth.

so'haṃ hyahiṃsraḥ satyārthī kāmakrodhabahiṣkṛtaḥ | samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣemī mṛtyuṃ hāsyāmyamartyavat ||

So I, harming none, seeking truth, having cast out desire and anger, the same in sorrow and joy, secure, will leave death behind like one who does not die.

Meaning today and context

Medhavin's resolve is a simple portrait of a free person: no harm, honesty, no rule by desire or anger, and steadiness in good and bad times.

Mahabharata 12.169.29: Medhavin declares his own resolve: non-harming, seeking truth, free of desire and anger, even in pain and pleasure, at peace, he will leave death behind like an immortal.

śāntiyajñarato dānto brahmayajñe sthito muniḥ | vāṅmanaḥkarmayajñaśca bhaviṣyāmyudagāyane ||

Meaning today and context

Worship can be inward: offering calm, honest speech, clear thought and good action every day.

Mahabharata 12.169.30: Medhavin says he will delight in the sacrifice of peace, self-controlled, steady in the sacrifice of sacred knowledge, a sage whose sacrifice is speech, mind and action, on the northern (bright) path.

How could one like me, who understands, worship with violent animal sacrifices, or with the perishable sacrifices of warriors, like a flesh-eating ghoul?

Meaning today and context

Worship that harms others or chases passing rewards misses the point. Real devotion is non-violent and inward.

Mahabharata 12.169.31: Medhavin asks how someone like him, with understanding, could worship through violent animal sacrifices or perishable warrior-style sacrifices, like a piśāca (ghoul).

nāsti vidyāsamaṃ cakṣurnāsti vidyāsamaṃ balam | nāsti rāgasamaṃ duḥkhaṃ nāsti tyāgasamaṃ sukham ||

There is no eye equal to knowledge, no strength equal to knowledge; there is no sorrow equal to passionate attachment, no happiness equal to letting go.

Meaning today and context

Understanding lets us see and gives us strength; clinging is the deepest source of pain, and letting go is the deepest relief.

Mahabharata 12.169.33: Medhavin's famous maxim: there is no eye like knowledge, no strength like knowledge, no sorrow like attachment, no happiness like letting go.

Born in the Self through the Self, resting in the Self, even if childless, I shall abide in the Self alone; offspring will not carry me across.

This is one seeker's choice about his own path; it does not belittle having children or anyone's family life, nor shame those who cannot or do not have children.

Meaning today and context

Our ultimate peace cannot be handed to someone else, even to our children. Each person must find their own footing within.

Mahabharata 12.169.34: Medhavin says that, born in the Self by the Self, grounded in the Self, even without children, he will dwell in the Self; offspring will not save him. This answers his father's advice to have sons (12.169.6).

There is no wealth for a brahmin like this: oneness, evenness, truthfulness, steadiness in good conduct, laying aside the rod, straightforwardness, and turning away from ritual acts step by step.

'Brahmin' here means one devoted to learning and truth, by conduct, never by birth.

Meaning today and context

Real wealth is character: honesty, fairness, non-violence and a straightforward heart. These do not depend on birth or status.

Mahabharata 12.169.35: Medhavin says no wealth of a brahmin equals oneness, evenness, truthfulness, steadiness in good conduct, laying down the rod, straightness, and gradual withdrawal from rituals.
