Chapter 1

1.1 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kathaṃ jñānamavāpnoti kathaṃ muktirbhaviṣyati | vairāgyaṃ ca kathaṃ prāptametadbrūhi mama prabho ||

How is knowledge attained? How will liberation come about? And how is dispassion reached? Tell me this, my lord.

Meaning today and context

These are the questions of anyone who has had enough of going round in circles: how do I really understand, how do I get free, how do I stop clinging? Asking them sincerely, of someone who knows, is where the path begins.

King Janaka opens the dialogue by asking the sage Ashtavakra three questions: how knowledge is gained, how liberation comes, and how dispassion is reached.

1.2 Ashtavakra to Janaka

muktimicchasi cettāta viṣayānviṣavattyaja | kṣamārjavadayātoṣasatyaṃ pīyūṣavadbhaja ||

If you seek liberation, my son, shun the objects of the senses as poison; and drink in forgiveness, straightforwardness, kindness, contentment and truth as nectar.

'Shun as poison' means inner freedom from craving, not refusing food, rest or the needs of daily life, and not abandoning family or work.

Meaning today and context

Endless chasing of pleasures and possessions keeps the mind hungry and restless. Forgiveness, honesty, kindness, contentment and truthfulness are what actually nourish a free and settled mind.

Ashtavakra answers Janaka: if you want freedom, give up chasing sense objects and cultivate the virtues.

1.3 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na pṛthvī na jalaṃ nāgnirna vāyurdyaurna vā bhavān | eṣāṃ sākṣiṇamātmānaṃ cidrūpaṃ viddhi muktaye ||

You are not earth, not water, not fire, not air, nor space. For liberation, know yourself as the witness of all these, whose nature is awareness.

Meaning today and context

Whatever you can observe, your body, your surroundings, even your moods, you are the one observing it. Knowing yourself as that steady awareness gives a footing that changing circumstances cannot take away.

Ashtavakra tells Janaka what he truly is: not any of the elements, but the witnessing awareness of them all.

1.4 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yadi dehaṃ pṛthakkṛtya citi viśrāmya tiṣṭhasi | adhunaiva sukhī śānto bandhamukto bhaviṣyasi ||

If you set the body apart and remain at rest in awareness, then this very moment you will be happy, at peace, and free from bondage.

This is about identity, not contempt for the body. If you struggle with self-harm, an eating disorder or low self-worth, please reach out: Tele-MANAS 14416. Caring for your body and health remains important.

Meaning today and context

Peace is not only a distant reward. Even now, stepping back from the pains and demands of the body and simply resting as the one who is aware can bring real relief.

Ashtavakra promises Janaka that freedom is immediate: separate from identification with the body and rest in awareness.

1.5 Ashtavakra to Janaka

You are not a brahmin or of any other caste, nor in any stage of life, nor anything the eyes can see. You are unattached, formless, the witness of all; be happy.

The verse sets aside caste altogether as no part of the Self; it must never be used to rank or exclude anyone by birth.

Meaning today and context

Labels like caste, status, age or role describe circumstances, not who you are. Seeing past them can free you from the pride or the hurt that comes with them.

Ashtavakra tells Janaka that no social label, caste, stage of life or sensory form defines him; he is the unattached witness.

1.6 Ashtavakra to Janaka

Right and wrong, pleasure and pain belong to the mind, not to you, all-pervading one. You are not the doer, nor the enjoyer; you are ever free.

This does not mean right and wrong don't matter in daily life. You remain responsible for how you treat others; the verse is about the deepest Self, not a licence for harm.

Meaning today and context

Pleasure and pain, guilt and pride rise and fall in the mind. You can feel them fully without believing they are the whole of you, and that gives room to breathe.

Ashtavakra tells Janaka that merit and demerit, pleasure and pain belong to the mind, not to the Self, which neither acts nor enjoys.

1.7 Ashtavakra to Janaka

eko draṣṭāsi sarvasya muktaprāyo'si sarvadā | ayameva hi te bandho draṣṭāraṃ paśyasītaram ||

You are the one seer of everything, and you are always essentially free. This alone is your bondage: that you see the seer as someone other.

Meaning today and context

We often look for ourselves in what we see, our looks, our achievements, others' opinions. The one who is seeing all this is never one of those things; recognising that loosens much of our anxiety about who we are.

Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the one seer is already free; his only bondage is seeing the seer as something other than himself.

1.8 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ahaṃ kartetyahaṃmānamahākṛṣṇāhidaṃśitaḥ | nāhaṃ karteti viśvāsāmṛtaṃ pītvā sukhī bhava ||

You have been bitten by the great black serpent of the ego's pride, 'I am the doer'. Drink the nectar of faith, 'I am not the doer', and be happy.

Seeing yourself as not the doer is about inner freedom, not about escaping responsibility for what you do or the people who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

The feeling that everything depends on me and that every outcome is mine to carry is exhausting and poisonous. Seeing that countless causes act through us, we can still work fully but without the crushing weight.

Ashtavakra compares the ego's belief 'I am the doer' to the bite of a great black snake, and offers the conviction 'I am not the doer' as the antidote.

1.9 Ashtavakra to Janaka

eko viśuddhabodho'hamiti niścayavahninā | prajvālyājñānagahanaṃ vītaśokaḥ sukhī bhava ||

With the fire of the conviction 'I am the one pure awareness', burn down the forest of ignorance; free of sorrow, be happy.

If you are grieving a loss, your grief is real and deserves care; this verse is about inner understanding, not a demand to stop mourning.

Meaning today and context

Confusion about who we are grows thick like a forest. A firm, clear conviction about your true nature, held steadily, can clear it more powerfully than endless worrying.

Ashtavakra tells Janaka to burn the forest of ignorance with the fire of the conviction 'I am the one pure awareness'.

1.10 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yatra viśvamidaṃ bhāti kalpitaṃ rajjusarpavat | ānandaparamānandaḥ sa bodhastvaṃ sukhaṃ cara ||

That in which this universe appears, imagined like a snake on a rope, that awareness of bliss, supreme bliss, is you; live happily.

Meaning today and context

Much of what frightens us is like the snake seen in a rope: real-looking, but mostly our interpretation. Looking closely, many fears lose their hold.

Ashtavakra uses the image of a rope mistaken for a snake: the world appears in awareness as an imagined overlay, and Janaka is that awareness itself.

1.11 Ashtavakra to Janaka

muktābhimānī mukto hi baddho baddhābhimānyapi | kiṃ vadantīha satye'yaṃ yā matiḥ sā gatirbhavet ||

One who considers himself free is free indeed, and one who considers himself bound is bound. 'As one thinks, so one becomes': this saying in the world is true.

Meaning today and context

How you see yourself shapes your life. If you keep telling yourself you are stuck, broken or not good enough, you live inside that story; seeing yourself as free opens the door to living freely.

Ashtavakra gives Janaka one of the text's best-known teachings: one who thinks himself free is free, one who thinks himself bound is bound; as you think, so you become.

1.12 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ātmā sākṣī vibhuḥ pūrṇa eko muktaścidakriyaḥ | asaṅgo nispṛhaḥ śānto bhramātsaṃsāravāniva ||

The Self is the witness, all-pervading, complete, one, free, pure awareness, actionless, unattached, desireless, at peace. Only through delusion does it seem to be bound in the cycle of worldly life.

Meaning today and context

At your core you are not lacking anything. The sense of being incomplete and trapped is real as an experience but rests on a misunderstanding that can be seen through.

Ashtavakra describes the Self to Janaka: witness, all-pervading, complete, one, free, actionless, and only through error seeming to be caught in worldly life.

1.13 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kūṭasthaṃ bodhamadvaitamātmānaṃ paribhāvaya | ābhāso'haṃ bhramaṃ muktvā bhāvaṃ bāhyamathāntaraṃ ||

Meditate on the Self as unchanging, as awareness, as non-dual. Give up the error 'I am a reflection', and every notion, outer and inner.

Meaning today and context

We tend to see ourselves as a small, borrowed copy of something real. This verse invites a steady contemplation of yourself as the unchanging awareness itself, beyond outer roles and inner moods.

Ashtavakra instructs Janaka to meditate on the Self as unchanging non-dual awareness, giving up the error of being a mere reflection and every outer and inner notion.

1.14 Ashtavakra to Janaka

dehābhimānapāśena ciraṃ baddho'si putraka | bodho'haṃ jñānakhaḍgena tanniṣkṛtya sukhī bhava ||

Long have you been bound by the noose of identification with the body, my child. Cut it with the sword of the knowledge 'I am awareness', and be happy.

This is about identity, not contempt for the body. If you struggle with self-harm, an eating disorder or low self-worth, please reach out: Tele-MANAS 14416. Caring for your body and health remains important.

Meaning today and context

Much suffering comes from measuring ourselves only by the body: its looks, age, illness, weakness. Knowing you are more than the body can cut that tie of anxiety, while you still look after your body with care.

Ashtavakra tenderly tells Janaka, 'my child', that he has long been bound by the noose of identifying with the body, and should cut it with the sword of knowledge.

1.15 Ashtavakra to Janaka

niḥsaṅgo niṣkriyo'si tvaṃ svaprakāśo nirañjanaḥ | ayameva hi te bandhaḥ samādhimanutiṣṭhasi ||

You are unattached, actionless, self-luminous, stainless. This alone is your bondage: that you practise samādhi.

Meaning today and context

Even spiritual effort can become another way of telling yourself you are not yet enough. The verse points out that what you seek is already your nature; practice need not be a frantic chase.

Ashtavakra tells Janaka that he is already unattached and self-luminous; even practising samādhi as a means to reach the Self is a form of bondage.

1.16 Ashtavakra to Janaka

tvayā vyāptamidaṃ viśvaṃ tvayi protaṃ yathārthataḥ | śuddhabuddhasvarūpastvaṃ, mā gamaḥ kṣudracittatām ||

This universe is pervaded by you and truly woven in you. Your nature is pure awareness; do not fall into smallness of mind.

Meaning today and context

Pettiness, small grudges and narrow worries shrink us. Remembering how vast your true nature is makes it easier to let small things go.

Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the whole universe is pervaded by and woven in him; being pure awareness, he should not fall into smallness of mind.

1.17 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nirapekṣo nirvikāro nirbharaḥ śītalāśayaḥ | agādhabuddhirakṣubdho bhava cinmātravāsanaḥ ||

Be free of expectation, unchanging, full, cool at heart, of unfathomable understanding, undisturbed; let your only leaning be toward pure awareness.

Meaning today and context

Many upsets come from expecting things from people and events. A mind that is not hungry for outcomes stays cool, deep and hard to shake.

Ashtavakra describes the inner qualities Janaka should take on: needing nothing, unchanging, cool-hearted, deep and unshaken, with awareness alone as his inclination.

1.18 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sākāramanṛtaṃ viddhi nirākāraṃ tu niścalam | etattattvopadeśena na punarbhavasambhavaḥ ||

Know that whatever has form is unreal, and the formless is changeless. Through this teaching of the truth, there is no more coming into rebirth.

Meaning today and context

Everything with a shape, possessions, bodies, situations, keeps changing and passing. Resting your sense of self in what does not change gives a steadiness no loss can break.

Ashtavakra tells Janaka that whatever has form is unreal and the formless is unmoving; by this teaching of truth there is no more rebirth.

1.19 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yathaivādarśamadhyasthe rūpe'ntaḥ paritastu saḥ | tathaivāsminśarīre'ntaḥ paritaḥ parameśvaraḥ ||

Just as a mirror is within and all around the form reflected in it, so the Supreme Lord is within and all around this body.

Meaning today and context

You are never separate from the divine, not even for a moment. Like an image that exists only within its mirror, your life is held entirely within something greater.

Ashtavakra gives Janaka the image of a mirror: just as the mirror is inside and around the image in it, so the Supreme Lord is inside and around this body.

1.20 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ekaṃ sarvagataṃ vyoma bahirantaryathā ghaṭe | nityaṃ nirantaraṃ brahma sarvabhūtagaṇe tathā ||

Just as one all-pervading space is both outside and inside a pot, so the eternal, unbroken Brahman is in the whole multitude of beings.

Meaning today and context

The same reality fills every being, as the same space fills every pot. Seeing others this way softens the walls we build between ourselves and them.

Ashtavakra closes his first teaching with the image of space in a pot: one all-pervading space is inside and outside it, as the eternal Brahman is in all beings.
