Chapter 15

15.1 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yathātathopadeśena kṛtārthaḥ sattvabuddhimān | ājīvamapi jijñāsuḥ parastatra vimuhyati ||

A person of pure understanding reaches fulfilment through instruction given in any simple way; another, though he seeks to know all his life, remains bewildered by it.

Meaning today and context

Readiness matters more than the amount of teaching. A clear, sincere mind can be changed by one sentence; a cluttered one may collect books for a lifetime.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: a pure-minded person is fulfilled by even a simple instruction, while another stays bewildered after a lifetime of inquiry.

15.2 Ashtavakra to Janaka

mokṣo viṣayavairasyaṃ bandho vaiṣayiko rasaḥ | etāvadeva vijñānaṃ yathecchasi tathā kuru ||

Liberation is losing the taste for sense objects; bondage is relishing them. This much is the whole of knowledge; now do as you wish.

Meaning today and context

Freedom and bondage are not far-off states; they are how strongly we are hooked by what we crave. Notice the hook and you know where you stand.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: he gives the whole teaching in two lines: liberation is losing the taste for sense objects, bondage is relishing them.

15.3 Ashtavakra to Janaka

vāgmiprājñamahodyogaṃ janaṃ mūkajaḍālasam | karoti tattvabodho'yamatastyakto bubhukṣubhiḥ ||

This knowledge of truth turns an eloquent, clever, hugely active person into one who is silent, still and at rest. That is why those who want to enjoy the world shun it.

Describes the inner stillness of a knower, not advice to become idle or give up work and responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Deep understanding often makes people quieter and less driven to prove themselves. That can look like loss to someone who measures life by output and display.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: knowledge of truth makes the eloquent, clever and busy quiet and still, which is why those hungry for enjoyment avoid it.

15.4 Ashtavakra to Janaka

You are not the body, nor is the body yours; you are neither the enjoyer nor the doer. You are consciousness itself, ever the witness, needing nothing. Live happily.

'You are not the body' is about identity, not about neglecting the body; keep caring for your health, food and treatment. If you feel detached from your body in a distressing way, please talk to a doctor or Tele-MANAS (14416).

Meaning today and context

We are more than the body, the roles and the achievements we identify with. Seeing ourselves as the awareness behind all of it gives a steadiness that moods and events cannot shake.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: you are not the body, not the doer or enjoyer, but pure consciousness, the witness.

15.5 Ashtavakra to Janaka

Attraction and aversion are properties of the mind, and you are never the mind. You are free of mental constructions, awareness itself, changeless. Live happily.

Meaning today and context

Likes, dislikes, resentment and longing arise in the mind; they are not who we are. We can notice them without being defined or driven by them.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: attraction and aversion belong to the mind, and you are not the mind.

15.6 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sarvabhūteṣu cātmānaṃ sarvabhūtāni cātmani | vijñāya nirahaṃkāro nirmamastvaṃ sukhī bhava ||

Knowing the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self, free of ego and of the sense of 'mine', be happy.

Meaning today and context

When we see ourselves in others and others in ourselves, the walls of 'me' and 'mine' soften, and with them much of our envy, fear and loneliness.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: knowing the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self, be free of ego and possessiveness.

15.7 Ashtavakra to Janaka

viśvaṃ sphurati yatredaṃ taraṅgā iva sāgare | tattvameva na sandehaścinmūrte vijvaro bhava ||

That in which this universe appears, like waves on the ocean, is you yourself, without doubt. O pure consciousness, be free of anguish.

Meaning today and context

Events rise and fall like waves, but we are more like the ocean than any single wave. That perspective can calm the fever of worry.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: the universe appears in you like waves in the ocean; you are that.

15.8 Ashtavakra to Janaka

śraddhatsva tāta śraddhatsva nātra mohaṃ kuruṣva bhoḥ | jñānasvarūpo bhagavānātmā tvaṃ prakṛteḥ paraḥ ||

Have faith, my dear, have faith; do not be confused about this. You are the Self, knowledge itself, the Lord, beyond nature.

Meaning today and context

Sometimes the hardest part is simply trusting that we are more than our doubts and failures. The teacher asks for that trust, gently and twice.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: he urges Janaka affectionately to have faith that he is the Self, beyond nature.

15.9 Ashtavakra to Janaka

guṇaiḥ saṃveṣṭito dehastiṣṭhatyāyāti yāti ca | ātmā na gantā nāgantā kimenamanuśocasi ||

The body, bound up with the gunas, stays, comes and goes. The Self neither goes nor comes. Why then do you grieve for it?

When someone is grieving, acknowledge the loss first; the verse does not dismiss mourning, which is natural and human. If grief feels unbearable, reach out to someone or Tele-MANAS (14416).

Meaning today and context

Bodies are born, age and pass away, but what we truly are does not come and go. This can offer a deeper footing in loss, alongside, not instead of, the grief itself.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: the body comes and goes under the gunas, but the Self neither comes nor goes, so why grieve?

15.10 Ashtavakra to Janaka

dehastiṣṭhatu kalpāntaṃ gacchatvadyaiva vā punaḥ | kva vṛddhiḥ kva ca vā hānistava cinmātrarūpiṇaḥ ||

Let the body last until the end of the age, or let it go this very day: where is gain, where is loss, for you, whose form is consciousness alone?

About the Self, not an invitation to neglect health or welcome death. If you are thinking about death or ending your life, please reach out now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Facing illness or ageing, it can help to remember that our deepest identity is not measured in years. This is a source of steadiness, not a reason to stop caring for the body.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: whether the body lasts an age or ends today, pure consciousness neither gains nor loses.

15.11 Ashtavakra to Janaka

In you, the boundless ocean, let the wave of the world rise or set by its own nature; you neither gain nor lose by it.

Meaning today and context

Good times and bad times rise and fall on their own. Our deeper self is not made bigger by the good ones or smaller by the bad ones.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: in you, the boundless ocean, the wave of the world rises and sets by itself.

15.12 Ashtavakra to Janaka

My dear, you are consciousness alone; this world is not separate from you. So who could imagine anything to reject or accept, and how, and where?

Meaning today and context

Much of our stress is constantly sorting life into 'must have' and 'must avoid'. Seeing life as not separate from us eases that endless sorting.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: you are pure consciousness and the world is not separate from you, so who rejects or accepts what?

15.13 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ekasminnavyaye śānte cidākāśe'male tvayi | kuto janma kutaḥ karma kuto'haṃkāra eva ca ||

In you, the one, imperishable, peaceful, stainless sky of consciousness, where is birth, where is action, where even is the ego?

This speaks of the Self, not of moral responsibility; it is not a reason to avoid owning up to or repairing harm done to others.

Meaning today and context

Like the sky, untouched by the clouds that pass through it, awareness is not stained by what happens in it. This can loosen guilt and pride alike.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: in the one, imperishable, peaceful sky of consciousness, there is no birth, action or ego.

15.14 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yattvaṃ paśyasi tatraikastvameva pratibhāsase | kiṃ pṛthakbhāsate svarṇātkaṭakāṅgadanūpuram ||

Whatever you see, you alone appear there. Do bracelets, armlets and anklets appear as something other than gold?

Meaning today and context

Different shapes, one gold. Behind the many forms of life there is one reality, and it is not foreign to us.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: whatever you see, you alone appear there, as gold appears as bracelet, armlet and anklet.

15.15 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ayaṃ so'hamayamnāhaṃ vibhāgamiti santyaja | sarvamātmeti niścitya niḥsaṅkalpaḥ sukhī bhava ||

Give up such division as 'I am this' and 'I am not that'. Being certain that all is the Self, free of intentions, be happy.

Meaning today and context

We spend much energy defending a fixed idea of ourselves: 'I am the clever one', 'I am not that kind of person'. Letting go of those labels brings relief.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: drop the division 'I am this, I am not that'; knowing all is the Self, be free of intentions and happy.

15.16 Ashtavakra to Janaka

tavaivājñānato viśvaṃ tvamekaḥ paramārthataḥ | tvatto'nyo nāsti saṃsārī nāsaṃsārī ca kaścana ||

Through your ignorance alone the world exists; in truth you alone are. Other than you there is no one caught in samsara, nor anyone free of it.

A teaching about the Self, not a denial of other people's reality or needs; it is not a reason to stop caring for others.

Meaning today and context

The verse points beyond the split between 'me' and 'the world out there'. Taken honestly, it invites humility about how much of our trouble is in how we see.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: the world appears through your own ignorance; in truth you alone are, with no one else bound or free.

15.17 Ashtavakra to Janaka

bhrāntimātramidaṃ viśvaṃ na kiṃciditi niścayī | nirvāsanaḥ sphūrtimātro na kiṃcidiva śāmyati ||

Certain that this universe is only an appearance, nothing in itself, free of lingering desires, pure awareness, such a one rests as if nothing were.

'The world is nothing' is a teaching about attachment, not a reason to disregard responsibilities, other people or one's own life. If everything feels empty and meaningless, please talk to someone or Tele-MANAS (14416).

Meaning today and context

When we stop treating every passing event as solid and final, its grip on us weakens, and old habits of wanting quiet down.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: one who is certain the world is mere appearance comes to rest, free of latent desires.

15.18 Ashtavakra to Janaka

In the ocean of existence, one alone was, is and will be. You have neither bondage nor liberation; your work is done. Live happily.

Meaning today and context

There is nothing we must become to be whole. Seen this way, spiritual life is less a race to the finish and more a recognition of what already is.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: in the ocean of existence only one was, is and will be; you have no bondage or liberation.

15.19 Ashtavakra to Janaka

mā saṅkalpavikalpābhyāṃ cittaṃ kṣobhaya cinmaya | upaśāmya sukhaṃ tiṣṭha svātmanyānandavigrahe ||

O consciousness, do not agitate the mind with plans and doubts. Grow calm, and rest happily in your own Self, whose form is bliss.

Meaning today and context

Overthinking, endless plans, second-guessing, what-ifs, stirs the mind like wind on water. Letting it settle is itself a kind of happiness.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: do not churn the mind with intentions and doubts; settle and rest in your own blissful Self.

15.20 Ashtavakra to Janaka

tyajaiva dhyānaṃ sarvatra mā kiṃciddhṛdi dhāraya | ātmā tvaṃ mukta evāsi kiṃ vimṛśya kariṣyasi ||

Give up meditation altogether; hold nothing in the heart. You are the Self, already free. What will you achieve by deliberating?

Spoken to a ripe student by his teacher; for most people meditation remains a helpful practice. The point is not to grasp at results, not to drop a practice that helps you.

Meaning today and context

Freedom is not something we manufacture by effort; it is what we are. Even good practices can become another way of grasping when we use them to get somewhere.

Ashtavakra resumes teaching Janaka: give up even meditation and hold nothing in the heart; you are already free.
