evaṃ satatayuktā ye bhaktāstvāṃ paryupāsate | ye cāpyakṣaramavyaktaṃ teṣāṃ ke yogavittamāḥ ||
Arjuna said: Those devotees who, ever united in this way, worship you, and those who worship the imperishable, the unmanifest: which of them best knows yoga?
Meaning today and context
Arjuna asks a question many seekers still ask: is it better to pray to a personal God, or to seek a formless reality within? The chapter that follows is Krishna's answer.
After the vision of the cosmic form, Arjuna asks Krishna which of two kinds of seekers knows yoga best: devotees who worship him in form, or those who meditate on the imperishable, unmanifest reality.
ye tvakṣaramanirdeśyamavyaktaṃ paryupāsate | sarvatragamacintyaṃ ca kūṭasthamacalaṃ dhruvam ||
But those who worship the imperishable, the indefinable, the unmanifest, all-pervading and unthinkable, standing above all change, unmoving and constant,
Meaning today and context
The formless path is real and respected in the Gita. It seeks a reality that words and thoughts cannot hold, which is exactly why it is demanding.
Krishna turns to the second group: those who contemplate the imperishable, which cannot be defined, cannot be seen, is everywhere, beyond thought, unchanging and firm.
kleśo'dhikatarasteṣāmavyaktāsaktacetasām | avyaktā hi gatirduḥkhaṃ dehavadbhiravāpyate ||
Greater is the difficulty of those whose minds are set on the unmanifest; for the unmanifest goal is reached with hardship by those who have bodies.
Meaning today and context
If you find it hard to connect with something abstract and formless, that is natural, not a failure. Most of us live as bodies and need something to hold on to; choose the path that suits who you are.
Krishna adds that the path of the unmanifest is harder: for embodied beings, the goal that has no form is reached only with great difficulty.
ye tu sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi saṃnyasya matparāḥ | ananyenaiva yogena māṃ dhyāyanta upāsate ||
But those who surrender all actions to me, hold me as the highest, and worship me, meditating on me with undivided yoga,
Meaning today and context
Devotion here is not only prayer time. It means offering your everyday actions, your work and duties, to something higher and keeping that as the centre of your attention.
Krishna describes the devotees he will lift up: those who offer all their actions to him, hold him as the highest and meditate on him with undivided devotion.
mayyeva mana ādhatsva mayi buddhiṃ niveśaya | nivasiṣyasi mayyeva ata ūrdhvaṃ na saṃśayaḥ ||
Fix your mind on me alone; let your understanding rest in me. Then you will dwell in me alone hereafter; there is no doubt.
Meaning today and context
The first step is simple to say: let both your feelings and your decisions rest in the divine. If you can do this, nothing more is needed; if you can't yet, the next verses offer easier steps.
Krishna begins a ladder of practice. The first and highest step: fix your mind and understanding on him alone.
If you are unable even to practise, be intent on work for my sake. Even doing actions for my sake, you will attain perfection.
Meaning today and context
If sitting practice doesn't work for you, you can still walk this path through action. Doing your work as an offering, for something larger than yourself, is a real spiritual practice.
The third step: if even practice is beyond you, make work done for him your highest aim; even by acting for his sake you will reach perfection.
śreyo hi jñānamabhyāsājjñānāddhyānaṃ viśiṣyate | dhyānātkarmaphalatyāgastyāgācchāntiranantaram ||
Knowledge is better than practice; meditation excels knowledge; giving up the fruits of action excels meditation; from giving up comes peace at once.
Meaning today and context
Letting go of the demand that things turn out your way brings peace sooner than you might expect. You don't have to master meditation to start feeling lighter.
Krishna sums up: knowledge is better than mere practice, meditation better than knowledge, and giving up the fruits of action better than meditation, because peace follows immediately from that letting go.
adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṃ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca | nirmamo nirahaṃkāraḥ samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī ||
One who hates no being, who is friendly and compassionate, free of possessiveness and ego, even in pain and pleasure, forbearing,
Forbearance and freedom from hatred are inner qualities. They do not mean staying in an abusive situation or accepting harm; seeking safety and help is right.
Meaning today and context
This is a portrait to grow into: no ill will toward anyone, warmth and compassion for all, less 'me and mine', and patience when hurt. It is a powerful answer to anger, envy and bitterness in relationships.
Krishna now describes the devotee who is dear to him, beginning with freedom from hatred, friendliness, compassion and forbearance.
yasmānnodvijate loko lokānnodvijate ca yaḥ | harṣāmarṣabhayodvegairmukto yaḥ sa ca me priyaḥ ||
One from whom the world does not shrink in distress, and who does not shrink from the world, free from elation, impatience, fear and agitation, is dear to me.
Meaning today and context
A useful test at work and at home: do people feel uneasy around me, and do I get rattled by them? Aim to be someone who neither creates turmoil nor is thrown by it.
Krishna describes one who neither disturbs the world nor is disturbed by it, free from elation, intolerance, fear and agitation.
anapekṣaḥ śucirdakṣa udāsīno gatavyathaḥ | sarvārambhaparityāgī yo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ ||
Free of expectation, pure, capable, impartial, free from distress, giving up every self-seeking undertaking: that devotee of mine is dear to me.
Not advice to give up ambition, a career or family duties. The verse describes freedom from self-seeking and from clinging expectation, while remaining capable and active.
Meaning today and context
Notice 'daksha', capable: the ideal is not passive. It is someone who handles what comes skilfully and honestly, without needing things to go their way and without taking sides out of personal interest.
Krishna continues: the dear devotee expects nothing, is pure, capable, impartial, untroubled, and has given up all self-serving undertakings.
One who neither rejoices nor hates, neither grieves nor craves, who has let go of both good and bad, full of devotion: such a one is dear to me.
'Does not grieve' describes a mature saint, not a demand on someone who has just suffered a loss. Mourning is natural; acknowledge the grief first. It is also not a call to stop striving or caring.
Meaning today and context
This is the steadiness that grows with devotion: not being swung up and down by every gain and loss. It is a direction to grow in, not a rule against feeling.
The dear devotee neither rejoices excessively nor hates, neither grieves nor craves, and has let go of good and bad alike.
samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāvamānayoḥ | śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅgavivarjitaḥ ||
The same toward enemy and friend, and in honour and dishonour, the same in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, free from attachment,
Being even toward an enemy is an inner state, not a reason to trust someone who has harmed you or to stop protecting yourself and others.
Meaning today and context
Insults and praise, rivals and friends: they still happen, but they don't have to decide your inner state. Evenness lets you respond wisely instead of reacting.
Krishna continues: the same toward enemy and friend, in honour and dishonour, in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, free from attachment.
The same in blame and praise, silent, content with whatever comes, homeless, steady in mind, full of devotion: that person is dear to me.
'Homeless' describes the wandering renunciant of Shankara's reading. It is not advice to leave one's home or family; for a householder it can mean not clinging to possessions and status.
Meaning today and context
Criticism and praise lose their grip when your sense of worth doesn't depend on them. Speaking less and needing less are quiet strengths anyone can practise.
The portrait continues: the same in blame and praise, restrained in speech, content with whatever comes, without a fixed home, steady in mind.
ye tu dharmyāmṛtamidaṃ yathoktaṃ paryupāsate | śraddadhānā matparamā bhaktāste'tīva me priyāḥ ||
But those who follow this immortal teaching of dharma as I have stated it, with faith, holding me as supreme, those devotees are exceedingly dear to me.
Meaning today and context
The list of qualities is not a test you must already pass. Those who sincerely take it up as a way of life, with trust, are the ones Krishna calls most dear.
Krishna closes the chapter: those who follow this immortal teaching of dharma with faith, holding him as supreme, are exceedingly dear to him.
