11.1 Arjuna to Krishna

madanugrahāya paramaṃ guhyamadhyātmasaṃjñitam | yattvayoktaṃ vacastena moho'yaṃ vigato mama ||

Arjuna said: Out of kindness to me you have spoken the supreme secret, the teaching about the Self, and by your words this delusion of mine is gone.

Meaning today and context

Confusion often lifts not through our own effort alone but through someone who explains patiently and with care. Arjuna names the help he received and the clarity it brought.

Arjuna opens the chapter by telling Krishna that the teaching he has just received has cleared away his confusion.

11.2 Arjuna to Krishna

bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṃ śrutau vistaraśo mayā | tvattaḥ kamalapatrākṣa māhātmyamapi cāvyayam ||

I have heard from you in detail of the origin and dissolution of beings, lotus-eyed one, and of your imperishable greatness too.

Meaning today and context

Arjuna has heard the teaching fully. What he still wants is to see it for himself, which is the turn the chapter takes.

Arjuna continues: he has heard in detail from Krishna how beings arise and pass away, and of Krishna's own imperishable greatness.

11.3 Arjuna to Krishna

evametadyathāttha tvamātmānaṃ parameśvara | draṣṭumicchāmi te rūpamaiśvaraṃ puruṣottama ||

It is just as you have described yourself, supreme Lord. Yet I wish to see your divine form, highest of persons.

Meaning today and context

Accepting something in words and wanting to experience it directly are two different things. Arjuna does not doubt; he longs to see.

Arjuna accepts all that Krishna has said about himself, yet asks to see his divine form with his own eyes.

11.4 Arjuna to Krishna

manyase yadi tacchakyaṃ mayā draṣṭumiti prabho | yogeśvara tato me tvaṃ darśayātmānamavyayam ||

If you think that I am able to see it, Lord, then, Master of yoga, show me your imperishable Self.

Meaning today and context

Arjuna asks, but leaves the decision to Krishna. Even an eager request can be made with humility about one's own readiness.

Arjuna asks humbly: only if Krishna thinks him capable of it, let him be shown that imperishable Self.

11.5 Krishna to Arjuna

paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ | nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca ||

The Blessed Lord said: Behold, Partha, my forms, by hundreds and by thousands, of many kinds, divine, of many colours and shapes.

Meaning today and context

The divine is shown not as one fixed image but as endless variety. The vision begins with abundance.

Krishna agrees and tells Arjuna to behold his countless divine forms.

11.6 Krishna to Arjuna

paśyādityānvasūnrudrānaśvinau marutastathā | bahūnyadṛṣṭapūrvāṇi paśyāścaryāṇi bhārata ||

Behold the Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the two Ashvins and the Maruts; behold many wonders never seen before, Bharata.

Meaning today and context

The whole pantheon Arjuna knows is shown as part of one being. What seemed many is held in one.

Krishna names the classes of gods Arjuna will see within his form.

11.7 Krishna to Arjuna

ihaikasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ paśyādya sacarācaram | mama dehe guḍākeśa yaccānyaddraṣṭumicchasi ||

See here today, Gudakesha, the whole universe, moving and unmoving, gathered in one place in my body, and whatever else you wish to see.

Meaning today and context

Everything is shown together in one place. Arjuna's scattered worries are about to be seen within a single whole.

Krishna tells Arjuna that the entire universe, and whatever else he wishes to see, is present in his body.

11.8 Krishna to Arjuna

na tu māṃ śakyase draṣṭumanenaiva svacakṣuṣā | divyaṃ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogamaiśvaram ||

But you cannot see me with these eyes of yours. I give you a divine eye: behold my sovereign power.

Meaning today and context

Some things cannot be seen with the way we usually look at the world. Seeing more deeply needs a changed way of seeing, and that is often a gift as much as an achievement.

Krishna explains that Arjuna cannot see this form with ordinary eyes, and grants him divine sight.

11.9 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

evamuktvā tato rājanmahāyogeśvaro hariḥ | darśayāmāsa pārthāya paramaṃ rūpamaiśvaram ||

Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus, O King, Hari, the great Lord of yoga, then showed Partha his supreme, sovereign form.

Meaning today and context

The narrator steps back in. The vision is told at a distance, to a blind king who will not see it himself.

Sanjaya tells King Dhritarashtra that Krishna then revealed his supreme form to Arjuna.

11.10 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

anekavaktranayanamanekādbhutadarśanam | anekadivyābharaṇaṃ divyānekodyatāyudham ||

With many mouths and eyes, many wondrous sights, many divine ornaments, many divine weapons raised,

Meaning today and context

The form overwhelms by sheer number. Words strain to describe it, and the speaker can only pile up images.

Sanjaya begins to describe the cosmic form.

11.11 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

divyamālyāmbaradharaṃ divyagandhānulepanam | sarvāścaryamayaṃ devamanantaṃ viśvatomukham ||

wearing divine garlands and garments, anointed with divine fragrance, all-wonderful, the infinite God, facing in every direction.

Meaning today and context

The vision is beautiful as well as vast. Before it becomes terrifying, it is full of wonder.

Sanjaya continues describing the form's garlands, garments and fragrance.

11.12 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

divi sūryasahasrasya bhavedyugapadutthitā | yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syādbhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ ||

If the light of a thousand suns were to blaze forth all at once in the sky, that might resemble the splendour of that great being.

Meaning today and context

The famous image of a thousand suns says that the vision goes beyond anything we can compare it to.

Sanjaya compares the brilliance of the form to a thousand suns.

11.13 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

tatraikasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ pravibhaktamanekadhā | apaśyaddevadevasya śarīre pāṇḍavastadā ||

There, in the body of the God of gods, the son of Pandu then saw the whole universe, divided in many ways, standing as one.

Meaning today and context

Many and one are seen together: every distinction remains, yet everything rests in a single being.

Sanjaya says Arjuna saw the whole universe, in all its divisions, within the body of Krishna.

11.14 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo hṛṣṭaromā dhanaṃjayaḥ | praṇamya śirasā devaṃ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata ||

Then Dhananjaya, filled with wonder, his hair standing on end, bowed his head to the God and spoke with joined palms.

Meaning today and context

Real awe shows in the body: hair on end, head bowed, hands joined. Arjuna's first response is reverence, not analysis.

Sanjaya describes Arjuna's reaction: amazed, his hair on end, he bows and begins to speak.

11.15 Arjuna to Krishna

Arjuna said: I see in your body, O God, all the gods and the hosts of different beings; Brahma the Lord seated on the lotus, all the sages and the divine serpents.

Meaning today and context

Even the creator Brahma is seen as one figure within this form. Arjuna's whole world of sacred beings fits inside it.

Arjuna begins to describe what he sees: all gods, beings, Brahma, the sages and the divine serpents within Krishna's body.

11.16 Arjuna to Krishna

anekabāhūdaravaktranetraṃ paśyāmi tvā sarvato'nantarūpam | nāntaṃ na madhyaṃ na punastavādiṃ paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa ||

I see you everywhere, infinite in form, with many arms, bellies, mouths and eyes. I see no end, no middle and no beginning of you, Lord of the universe, whose form is the universe.

Meaning today and context

Arjuna looks for edges and finds none. Some realities cannot be taken in from one standpoint.

Arjuna continues: the form has no beginning, middle or end that he can find.

11.17 Arjuna to Krishna

kirīṭinaṃ gadinaṃ cakriṇaṃ ca tejorāśiṃ sarvato dīptimantam | paśyāmi tvāṃ durnirīkṣyaṃ samantāddīptānalārkadyutimaprameyam ||

I see you with crown, mace and discus, a mass of radiance shining everywhere, hard to look at from every side, with the brilliance of blazing fire and sun, beyond measure.

Meaning today and context

Familiar signs, the crown, mace and discus, appear inside something too bright to look at. The known and the unknowable are seen together.

Arjuna describes the crown, mace and discus, and the blinding radiance of the form.

You are the Imperishable, the supreme to be known; you are the final resting place of this universe. You are unchanging, the guardian of the everlasting dharma; you are, I believe, the eternal Person.

Meaning today and context

Awe turns into recognition. Behind the changing world there is something that does not change and that holds everything up, and knowing it is the real aim.

Arjuna moves from describing to understanding: Krishna is the imperishable, the support of the universe, the guardian of eternal dharma.

11.19 Arjuna to Krishna

anādimadhyāntamanantavīryamanantabāhuṃ śaśisūryanetram | paśyāmi tvāṃ dīptahutāśavaktraṃ svatejasā viśvamidaṃ tapantam ||

I see you without beginning, middle or end, of infinite power, with countless arms, the moon and sun as your eyes, your mouth a blazing fire, scorching this universe with your own radiance.

Meaning today and context

Arjuna continues his description, now as the form begins to look fierce, burning the universe with its radiance.

11.20 Arjuna to Krishna

Meaning today and context

Faced with something overwhelming, some pray in fear and some pray for the good of all. Both responses appear side by side.

Arjuna describes hosts of gods entering the form, some praising in fear, while sages pray for the world's welfare.

11.22 Arjuna to Krishna

The Rudras, Adityas, Vasus and Sadhyas, the Vishvedevas, the two Ashvins, the Maruts and the ancestors, the hosts of Gandharvas, Yakshas, Asuras and Siddhas all gaze at you in amazement.

Meaning today and context

Every kind of being, friendly or hostile in the old stories, is equally amazed. Before this vision, all are spectators.

Arjuna lists more classes of beings gazing at the form in amazement.

11.23 Arjuna to Krishna

rūpaṃ mahatte bahuvaktranetraṃ mahābāho bahubāhūrupādam | bahūdaraṃ bahudaṃṣṭrākarālaṃ dṛṣṭvā lokāḥ pravyathitāstathāham ||

Meaning today and context

Arjuna, the great warrior, simply says: I am afraid too. Admitting fear honestly is where the rest of his prayer begins.

Arjuna admits that the worlds are shaken at the sight of the form, and so is he.

11.24 Arjuna to Krishna

nabhaḥspṛśaṃ dīptamanekavarṇaṃ vyāttānanaṃ dīptaviśālanetram | dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṃ pravyathitāntarātmā dhṛtiṃ na vindāmi śamaṃ ca viṣṇo ||

Seeing you touching the sky, blazing, many-coloured, with gaping mouths and huge fiery eyes, my innermost self is shaken, and I find no steadiness and no peace, Vishnu.

Meaning today and context

Faced with something far bigger than ourselves, a serious illness, a disaster, the sheer scale of life and death, it is human to lose our footing. Arjuna does not pretend to be calm; he says plainly that he has lost his steadiness.

Arjuna confesses that the sight has shaken him to the core; he can find neither courage nor peace.

11.25 Arjuna to Krishna

Seeing your mouths, terrible with tusks, like the fire at the end of time, I have lost my bearings and find no refuge. Be gracious, Lord of gods, abode of the universe!

Meaning today and context

When we are completely lost and frightened, there is a simple prayer left: please be kind to me. Asking for grace in fear is not weakness.

Arjuna, disoriented by terror, asks Krishna for grace.

11.26 Arjuna to Krishna

This is a vision of the war's outcome, shown before it happens. It is meant to awe Arjuna, not to make death something to wish for.

Arjuna describes the warriors rushing into the terrible mouths of the form, some crushed between its teeth.

11.28 Arjuna to Krishna

Meaning today and context

Rivers do not choose the sea; they simply flow there. The image speaks of how every life moves toward the same end.

Arjuna compares the warriors entering the form to rivers flowing into the sea.

11.29 Arjuna to Krishna

yathā pradīptaṃ jvalanaṃ pataṃgā viśanti nāśāya samṛddhavegāḥ | tathaiva nāśāya viśanti lokāstavāpi vaktrāṇi samṛddhavegāḥ ||

Arjuna offers a second image: like moths flying into a flame.

Meaning today and context

The divine is shown here as the force that ends things as well as begins them. The Gita does not hide this side of reality.

Arjuna describes the form devouring the worlds, its fierce rays scorching everything.

11.31 Arjuna to Krishna

Meaning today and context

When life turns frightening and makes no sense, it is honest to bow and still ask: what is happening, and why? Reverence and the wish to understand can go together.

Overwhelmed, Arjuna bows and asks Krishna who he is in this fierce form and what he intends.

11.32 Krishna to Arjuna

kālo'smi lokakṣayakṛtpravṛddho lokānsamāhartumiha pravṛttaḥ | ṛte'pi tvā na bhaviṣyanti sarve ye'vasthitāḥ pratyanīkeṣu yodhāḥ ||

The Blessed Lord said: I am Time, grown mighty, the destroyer of worlds, set here to bring the worlds to their end. Even without you, none of these warriors arrayed in the opposing ranks will live.

Krishna speaks to a warrior in a war that, in the epic, could no longer be avoided. Never use this verse to justify violence, or to see yourself as an instrument of destruction against anyone. Its lasting lesson is humility: do not claim as your own what was set in motion by far larger forces.

Meaning today and context

Everything that begins also ends; time takes all of us, with or without our doing. Seeing this can loosen the belief that every outcome rests on our shoulders alone.

Krishna answers: he is Time, grown mighty, come to destroy the worlds; even without Arjuna, the warriors arrayed here will not survive.

11.33 Krishna to Arjuna

Therefore stand up and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a prosperous kingdom. They have already been slain by me; be merely the instrument, ambidextrous archer.

Meaning today and context

'Be merely the instrument' is a lesson in humility, especially in success. When things go well, much of the result came from forces far larger than us: others' work, circumstances, grace. Do your part fully, and don't make yourself the author of everything.

Krishna tells Arjuna to rise and win glory: the outcome is already decided by him, and Arjuna is to be only the instrument.

11.34 Krishna to Arjuna

Krishna speaks to a warrior in a war that, in the epic, could no longer be avoided. Never use this verse to justify violence, or to see yourself as an instrument of destruction against anyone. Its lasting lesson is humility: do not claim as your own what was set in motion by far larger forces.

Meaning today and context

Krishna addresses Arjuna's specific fears by name. In our own lives, naming exactly what we dread is often the first step to facing it without being frozen.

Krishna names the great warriors Arjuna fears most and tells him not to be afraid: they are already slain, and he will win.

11.35 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

Arjuna begins a hymn of praise: it is fitting that the world rejoices in Krishna, demons flee and the perfected ones bow.

Arjuna, now aware of Krishna's greatness, remembers how casually he spoke to him as a friend, and is ashamed.

Meaning today and context

The highest things are not bought with effort alone: not with learning, donations, ritual or hard discipline. These have their place, but they do not guarantee what comes as grace.

Krishna says this form cannot be seen through Vedic study, sacrifice, gifts, rituals or severe austerities.

11.49 Krishna to Arjuna

mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvo dṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ ghoramīdṛṅmamedam | vyapetabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punastvaṃ tadeva me rūpamidaṃ prapaśya ||

Do not be distressed or bewildered at seeing this terrible form of mine. Free from fear and glad at heart, behold once more that same form of mine.

Meaning today and context

After overwhelming us, the divine comforts us. Fear is met with tenderness, and we are invited to look again with an open heart.

Krishna tells Arjuna not to be afraid or bewildered, and to look again, with a glad heart, at the form he loves.

11.50 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

ityarjunaṃ vāsudevastathoktvā svakaṃ rūpaṃ darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ | āśvāsayāmāsa ca bhītamenaṃ bhūtvā punaḥ saumyavapurmahātmā ||

Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus to Arjuna, Vasudeva showed his own form once more; and the great one, taking again his gentle form, comforted him in his fear.

Meaning today and context

The story ends its terror with comfort. The one who showed the frightening form is the same one who soothes.

Sanjaya says Krishna showed his own form again and comforted the frightened Arjuna.

11.51 Arjuna to Krishna

dṛṣṭvedaṃ mānuṣaṃ rūpaṃ tava saumyaṃ janārdana | idānīmasmi saṃvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtiṃ gataḥ ||

Arjuna said: Seeing this gentle human form of yours, Janardana, I am now composed; my mind is restored to its natural state.

Meaning today and context

After a shattering experience, a familiar, kind face can bring us back to ourselves. Being able to say 'I am myself again' is a real relief.

Arjuna, seeing Krishna's gentle human form again, says he has come back to himself.

11.52 Krishna to Arjuna

sudurdarśamidaṃ rūpaṃ dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama | devā apyasya rūpasya nityaṃ darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ||

The Blessed Lord said: This form of mine that you have seen is very hard to see. Even the gods are always longing for a sight of it.

Meaning today and context

Krishna helps Arjuna value what he has been given. Rare gifts are easy to overlook in the moment of fear.

Krishna tells Arjuna how rare his vision was: even the gods long to see this form.

11.53 Krishna to Arjuna

nāhaṃ vedairna tapasā na dānena na cejyayā | śakya evaṃvidho draṣṭuṃ dṛṣṭavānasi māṃ yathā ||

Not by the Vedas, not by austerity, not by charity and not by sacrifice can I be seen as you have seen me.

Meaning today and context

Learning, discipline, generosity and worship are good, but they are not a price that buys the deepest seeing. The next verse names what does.

Krishna repeats that neither the Vedas, austerity, charity nor sacrifice can give this vision.

11.54 Krishna to Arjuna

bhaktyā tvananyayā śakya ahamevaṃvidho'rjuna | jñātuṃ draṣṭuṃ ca tattvena praveṣṭuṃ ca paraṃtapa ||

But by devotion directed to nothing else, Arjuna, I can be known in this way, and seen in truth, and entered into, scorcher of foes.

Meaning today and context

What learning and effort cannot force, wholehearted love can open. Devotion here is not a ritual but a turning of the whole self toward the divine, and it leads from knowing to seeing to becoming one.

Krishna names the one way he can be truly known, seen and entered: undivided devotion.

11.55 Krishna to Arjuna

matkarmakṛnmatparamo madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ | nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ sa māmeti pāṇḍava ||

One who does my work, who holds me as the highest, who is devoted to me, free from attachment and without enmity toward any being, comes to me, son of Pandu.

Being free of attachment and enmity does not mean abandoning family or responsibilities, nor staying in an abusive situation. Freedom from hatred can go together with protecting yourself and seeking help.

Meaning today and context

After the terrifying vision, the chapter ends with something very simple: work as an offering, love, freedom from clinging, and no hatred toward anyone. This is a way of living anyone can begin today.

Krishna closes the chapter by describing the devotee who reaches him: one who works for him, holds him as the highest, is free of attachment and bears no enmity toward any being.
