Chapter 10

10.1 Krishna to Arjuna

bhūya eva mahābāho śṛṇu me paramaṃ vacaḥ | yatte'haṃ prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi hitakāmyayā ||

Listen once more, mighty-armed one, to my supreme word, which I will speak to you, who delight in it, out of a wish for your good.

Meaning today and context

Good teaching is given for the listener's good, and it lands best when the listener is glad to hear it. Some truths need to be heard more than once.

Krishna opens chapter 10, telling Arjuna he will speak his supreme word again because Arjuna takes delight in hearing it.

10.2 Krishna to Arjuna

na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavaṃ na maharṣayaḥ | ahamādirhi devānāṃ maharṣīṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ||

Neither the hosts of gods nor the great sages know my origin, for in every way I am the source of the gods and of the great sages.

Meaning today and context

What is the source of everything cannot be fully grasped by anything that comes from it. Even the wisest stand before it with humility.

Krishna says that neither the gods nor the great sages know his origin, because he is the source of them all.

10.3 Krishna to Arjuna

yo māmajamanādiṃ ca vetti lokamaheśvaram | asaṃmūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣu sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ||

Whoever knows me as unborn and beginningless, the great Lord of the worlds, is undeluded among mortals and is freed from all sins.

Meaning today and context

Seeing the deepest ground of life as something that was never born and never ends changes how we carry our mistakes. Clarity about what is lasting loosens the grip of past wrongs.

Krishna says that one who knows him as unborn, beginningless and the great Lord of the worlds is free of delusion and released from all wrongs.

10.4 Krishna to Arjuna

buddhirjñānamasaṃmohaḥ kṣamā satyaṃ damaḥ śamaḥ | sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ bhavo'bhāvo bhayaṃ cābhayameva ca ||

Understanding, knowledge, freedom from confusion, patience, truthfulness, restraint of the senses, calm of mind, pleasure and pain, birth and death, fear and also fearlessness,

Meaning today and context

Our good qualities, and even our pleasures, pains and fears, are not entirely our own invention. Seeing them as arising from a larger source can make us less proud of the good and less crushed by the hard.

Krishna begins listing the inner states of beings that come from him: understanding, knowledge, patience, truth, self-control and their opposites.

10.5 Krishna to Arjuna

ahiṃsā samatā tuṣṭistapo dānaṃ yaśo'yaśaḥ | bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṃ matta eva pṛthagvidhāḥ ||

non-violence, evenness, contentment, austerity, giving, fame and ill-fame: these varied states of beings arise from me alone.

Meaning today and context

Kindness, contentment and generosity are not just personal achievements. They are ways the sacred shows itself through people, and we can make room for them.

Krishna completes the list of states of beings that arise from him alone, in their many forms.

10.6 Krishna to Arjuna

maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāro manavastathā | madbhāvā mānasā jātā yeṣāṃ loka imāḥ prajāḥ ||

The seven great sages of old and likewise the four Manus, of my nature, were born from my mind; from them came these creatures of the world.

Meaning today and context

This describes the ancient lineage of creation as the Gita's world saw it: all beings trace back to the divine.

Krishna says the seven ancient sages and the four Manus, from whom the creatures of the world descend, were born from his mind.

10.7 Krishna to Arjuna

etāṃ vibhūtiṃ yogaṃ ca mama yo vetti tattvataḥ | so'vikampena yogena yujyate nātra saṃśayaḥ ||

Whoever knows in truth this glory and this power of mine is united with unwavering yoga; of this there is no doubt.

Meaning today and context

Understanding, not just belief, gives steadiness. When we really see the sacred running through everything, our footing stops shaking.

Krishna says that one who truly knows his manifold glory and his power is joined to unwavering yoga.

10.8 Krishna to Arjuna

ahaṃ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṃ pravartate | iti matvā bhajante māṃ budhā bhāvasamanvitāḥ ||

I am the origin of all; from me everything moves forth. Understanding this, the wise worship me, filled with devotion.

Meaning today and context

Devotion here is not blind; it grows from understanding where everything comes from. When you see the source behind all things, love for it follows naturally.

Krishna states the heart of the chapter: he is the origin of all, and the wise who understand this worship him with deep feeling.

10.9 Krishna to Arjuna

maccittā madgataprāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam | kathayantaśca māṃ nityaṃ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca ||

Their minds on me, their lives given to me, enlightening one another and always speaking of me, they are content and they rejoice.

Meaning today and context

Spiritual life is not only solitary. Talking about what matters most with others who care about it, and helping each other understand, brings a deep and lasting joy.

Krishna describes his devotees: their minds and lives are given to him, they enlighten one another, speak of him always, and find contentment and joy.

10.10 Krishna to Arjuna

teṣāṃ satatayuktānāṃ bhajatāṃ prītipūrvakam | dadāmi buddhiyogaṃ taṃ yena māmupayānti te ||

To those who are ever devoted and worship me with love, I give that yoga of understanding by which they come to me.

Meaning today and context

Sincere devotion is answered with clarity. When you keep turning toward what is highest, out of love rather than for a reward, understanding is given to you.

Krishna promises that to those constantly devoted to him with love, he gives the yoga of understanding by which they reach him.

10.11 Krishna to Arjuna

teṣāmevānukampārthamahamajñānajaṃ tamaḥ | nāśayāmyātmabhāvastho jñānadīpena bhāsvatā ||

Out of compassion for them alone, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.

If darkness here feels like depression or hopelessness, please also reach out to a doctor or counsellor; in India, Tele-MANAS 14416 is free. The verse's light is not a substitute for care.

Meaning today and context

The light that clears our confusion is not far away; it is lit from within. In dark times, steady sincerity lets that inner lamp burn brighter.

Krishna says that out of compassion for these devotees, dwelling within them, he destroys the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.

10.12 Arjuna to Krishna

paraṃ brahma paraṃ dhāma pavitraṃ paramaṃ bhavān | puruṣaṃ śāśvataṃ divyamādidevamajaṃ vibhum ||

Arjuna said: You are the supreme Brahman, the supreme abode, the supreme purifier, the eternal divine Person, the first of the gods, unborn and all-pervading.

Meaning today and context

When teaching really lands, the response is often wonder and praise. Arjuna is no longer only arguing; he is beginning to see.

Arjuna responds with praise, calling Krishna the supreme Brahman, the supreme abode and the eternal divine person.

10.13 Arjuna to Krishna

āhustvāmṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣirnāradastathā | asito devalo vyāsaḥ svayaṃ caiva bravīṣi me ||

All the sages proclaim you so, and the divine sage Narada, Asita, Devala and Vyasa; and now you yourself tell me.

Meaning today and context

Arjuna notes that what he once heard from tradition he now hears directly. Received teaching becomes personal.

Arjuna says the sages, Narada, Asita, Devala and Vyasa have all declared this of Krishna, and now Krishna says it himself.

10.14 Arjuna to Krishna

All this that you tell me, Keshava, I hold to be true. Neither the gods nor the demons, Lord, know your manifestation.

Meaning today and context

Trust in a teacher can sit alongside honest humility: I accept this as true, and I also know I cannot fully grasp it.

Arjuna accepts all Krishna has said as true and admits that neither gods nor demons know Krishna's manifestation.

10.15 Arjuna to Krishna

svayamevātmanātmānaṃ vettha tvaṃ puruṣottama | bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva jagatpate ||

You alone know yourself by yourself, O Supreme Person, source of beings, Lord of beings, God of gods, master of the world.

Meaning today and context

The deepest reality is not known as an object from the outside; it knows itself. Self-knowledge in the Gita is of this kind.

Arjuna says that Krishna alone knows himself by himself, addressing him with many titles.

10.16 Arjuna to Krishna

Meaning today and context

Arjuna wants to see how the sacred is present in the world he actually lives in, not only in theory.

Arjuna asks Krishna to describe fully his divine glories, by which he pervades the worlds.

10.17 Arjuna to Krishna

kathaṃ vidyāmahaṃ yogiṃstvāṃ sadā paricintayan | keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyo'si bhagavanmayā ||

Arjuna asks how he may know Krishna through constant reflection, and in which forms he should contemplate him.

10.18 Arjuna to Krishna

Meaning today and context

Some things are never exhausted by repetition. Arjuna's hunger to hear more is the sign of real interest, not of boredom with the familiar.

Arjuna asks Krishna to describe his power and glory again in detail, for he is never sated hearing his nectar-like words.

10.19 Krishna to Arjuna

I am the Self, Gudakesha, dwelling in the heart of all beings. I am the beginning, the middle and the very end of beings.

Meaning today and context

Before any outward wonder, the sacred is found as the innermost Self of every being, including the person in front of you. Every life, from beginning to end, rests in it.

Meaning today and context

The mind leads the senses, and awareness is what makes a being alive to the world. Caring for the quality of our attention is caring for something sacred.

Not a claim that rulers or those in power are divine or beyond question. In the Gita, authority is judged by whether it serves dharma.

If you are grieving, the verse does not ask you to accept a loss as simply God's will. The seven qualities belong to everyone; the grammatical 'feminine' is not a rule about what women should be.

But what need is there, Arjuna, for you to know all this in detail? I stand, holding up this entire universe with a single fraction of myself.

Meaning today and context

Details can be endless; one clear insight is enough. The whole universe rests on a mere fraction of the sacred, so it is far greater than anything we can list.

Krishna closes the chapter: rather than knowing all these details, know that he sustains this entire universe with a single fraction of himself.
