Chapter 9

9.1 Krishna to Arjuna

idaṃ tu te guhyatamaṃ pravakṣyāmyanasūyave | jñānaṃ vijñānasahitaṃ yajjñātvā mokṣyase'śubhāt ||

To you, who do not find fault, I will now declare this most secret knowledge, together with its realisation; knowing it, you will be freed from what is inauspicious.

Meaning today and context

Deep teaching opens to a mind that listens without looking for faults. Knowledge that only stays in the head is not enough; it has to become lived experience.

Krishna opens chapter 9 by promising Arjuna, who does not find fault, the most secret knowledge, joined with realisation, that frees from all that is inauspicious.

9.2 Krishna to Arjuna

rājavidyā rājaguhyaṃ pavitramidamuttamam | pratyakṣāvagamaṃ dharmyaṃ susukhaṃ kartumavyayam ||

It is the king of sciences, the king of secrets, the supreme purifier. It is known by direct experience, in keeping with dharma, very easy to practise, and imperishable.

Meaning today and context

The deepest spiritual truth is not a remote theory; it can be tested in one's own experience, it does not conflict with living rightly, and what it gives does not run out.

Krishna praises this knowledge as the king of sciences and of secrets: purifying, directly experienced, in keeping with dharma, easy to practise and imperishable.

9.3 Krishna to Arjuna

aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā dharmasyāsya paraṃtapa | aprāpya māṃ nivartante mṛtyusaṃsāravartmani ||

People who have no faith in this dharma, scorcher of foes, do not reach me and return to the path of death and worldly existence.

Honest doubt and questioning are part of seeking; this verse is not a reason to condemn anyone who does not share a belief.

Meaning today and context

Without some trust, no path can be walked; we keep circling in the same patterns. Faith here means willingness to take the teaching seriously enough to try it.

Krishna says those who have no faith in this teaching do not reach him and return to the path of death and repeated birth.

9.4 Krishna to Arjuna

mayā tatamidaṃ sarvaṃ jagadavyaktamūrtinā | matsthāni sarvabhūtāni na cāhaṃ teṣvavasthitaḥ ||

This whole world is pervaded by me in my unmanifest form. All beings abide in me, but I do not abide in them.

Meaning today and context

Everything we meet is held within a deeper reality that is not limited by any of it. This can steady us: no single event or person contains the whole of what is real.

Krishna describes his relation to the world: he pervades all in an unmanifest form; all beings rest in him, but he does not rest in them.

9.5 Krishna to Arjuna

na ca matsthāni bhūtāni paśya me yogamaiśvaram | bhūtabhṛnna ca bhūtastho mamātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ ||

And yet beings do not abide in me; see my divine power. My Self sustains beings and brings them forth, yet does not dwell in them.

Meaning today and context

The source of life supports everything without being caught by anything. It is a picture of care without clinging that we can learn from.

Krishna adds a paradox: in another sense beings do not rest in him either; he sustains and brings forth beings yet is not lodged in them.

9.6 Krishna to Arjuna

yathākāśasthito nityaṃ vāyuḥ sarvatrago mahān | tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni matsthānītyupadhāraya ||

As the mighty wind, moving everywhere, always rests in space, know that in the same way all beings rest in me.

Meaning today and context

However restless life becomes, it moves within a stillness that is never disturbed. Remembering that space-like ground can bring calm in the middle of turmoil.

Krishna gives an image: as the great wind moving everywhere always rests in space, so all beings rest in him.

9.7 Krishna to Arjuna

sarvabhūtāni kaunteya prakṛtiṃ yānti māmikām | kalpakṣaye punastāni kalpādau visṛjāmyaham ||

At the end of an age, son of Kunti, all beings pass into my nature; at the beginning of an age I send them forth again.

Meaning today and context

Endings and beginnings are part of one larger rhythm. What dissolves is not lost; it returns to its source and comes forth again.

Krishna describes the cycle of creation: at the end of an age all beings return into his nature, and at the start of the next he sends them forth again.

9.8 Krishna to Arjuna

prakṛtiṃ svāmavaṣṭabhya visṛjāmi punaḥ punaḥ | bhūtagrāmamimaṃ kṛtsnamavaśaṃ prakṛtervaśāt ||

Taking hold of my own nature, I send forth again and again this whole multitude of beings, helpless under the power of nature.

Meaning today and context

Much of what we do is driven by tendencies we did not choose. Seeing how strongly our nature pushes us is the first step to not being merely pushed.

Krishna says that, taking hold of his own nature, he sends forth again and again this whole multitude of beings, who are helpless under the sway of nature.

9.9 Krishna to Arjuna

na ca māṃ tāni karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanaṃjaya | udāsīnavadāsīnamasaktaṃ teṣu karmasu ||

Those actions do not bind me, Dhananjaya, for I sit as one indifferent, unattached to those actions.

Meaning today and context

It is not action that ties us up but the clinging to it and the sense of 'I am the doer'. One can do a great deal and still remain inwardly free.

Krishna says these acts of creation do not bind him, because he sits as if indifferent, unattached to those actions.

9.10 Krishna to Arjuna

mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sacarācaram | hetunānena kaunteya jagadviparivartate ||

Under my oversight, nature brings forth all that moves and does not move; for this reason, son of Kunti, the world revolves.

Meaning today and context

The world turns by its own laws, yet those laws rest on a conscious presence that witnesses all. We are part of this movement, not its sole managers.

Krishna says nature gives birth to all that moves and does not move under his oversight, and for this reason the world revolves.

9.11 Krishna to Arjuna

avajānanti māṃ mūḍhā mānuṣīṃ tanumāśritam | paraṃ bhāvamajānanto mama bhūtamaheśvaram ||

The deluded disregard me when I have taken a human form, not knowing my higher nature as the great Lord of all beings.

Meaning today and context

We easily judge by appearances. What looks ordinary, a person, a moment, may carry something far deeper than it seems.

Krishna says the deluded disregard him when he takes a human body, not knowing his higher nature as the great Lord of beings.

9.12 Krishna to Arjuna

moghāśā moghakarmāṇo moghajñānā vicetasaḥ | rākṣasīmāsurīṃ caiva prakṛtiṃ mohinīṃ śritāḥ ||

Vain in their hopes, vain in their actions, vain in their knowledge, senseless, they take refuge in the deluding nature of rakshasas and asuras.

Describes a tendency to guard against in oneself; never use it to label any person or group as demonic.

Meaning today and context

When life loses any sense of a deeper ground, effort and learning can turn empty and even cruel. The verse describes a direction of life, a warning to watch in ourselves.

Krishna describes those who disregard him: their hopes, actions and knowledge are in vain, and they fall into a deluding, demonic nature.

9.13 Krishna to Arjuna

mahātmānastu māṃ pārtha daivīṃ prakṛtimāśritāḥ | bhajantyananyamanaso jñātvā bhūtādimavyayam ||

But the great-souled, Partha, taking refuge in the divine nature, worship me with minds turned to nothing else, knowing me as the imperishable source of beings.

Meaning today and context

Greatness of soul shows in calm, self-control, compassion and faith, and in a mind that is not divided. Such a person turns wholeheartedly toward what is highest.

Krishna contrasts the great-souled, who rest in the divine nature and worship him with undivided mind, knowing him as the imperishable source of beings.

9.14 Krishna to Arjuna

satataṃ kīrtayanto māṃ yatantaśca dṛḍhavratāḥ | namasyantaśca māṃ bhaktyā nityayuktā upāsate ||

Always singing my praise, striving with firm vows, bowing to me with devotion, ever steadfast, they worship me.

Meaning today and context

Devotion is not only feeling; it is steady effort and firm commitment kept up day after day. Remembering, striving and bowing in humility go together.

Krishna describes how such devotees live: always singing his glory, striving with firm resolve, bowing to him in devotion, ever united with him.

9.15 Krishna to Arjuna

jñānayajñena cāpyanye yajanto māmupāsate | ekatvena pṛthaktvena bahudhā viśvatomukham ||

Others, offering the sacrifice of knowledge, worship me as the One, as distinct, and in many ways, as the one whose face is everywhere.

Meaning today and context

There is more than one way to approach the divine: as the one reality, as a personal presence, or as present in everything. Understanding itself can be an offering.

Krishna says others worship him through the sacrifice of knowledge, seeing him as one, as distinct, or in many forms facing every direction.

9.16 Krishna to Arjuna

ahaṃ kraturahaṃ yajñaḥ svadhāhamahamauṣadham | mantro'hamahamevājyamahamagnirahaṃ hutam ||

I am the rite, I am the sacrifice, I am the offering to the ancestors, I am the healing herb. I am the mantra, I am the clarified butter, I am the fire, I am the act of offering.

Meaning today and context

Every part of an act of offering, the giver, the gift and the giving, can be seen as sacred. Even ordinary food and medicine are part of that sacredness.

Krishna identifies himself with every part of the Vedic ritual: the rite, the offering, the food for ancestors, the herb, the mantra, the ghee, the fire and the act of offering.

9.17 Krishna to Arjuna

pitāhamasya jagato mātā dhātā pitāmahaḥ | vedyaṃ pavitramoṃkāra ṛksāma yajureva ca ||

I am the father of this world, the mother, the sustainer, the grandsire; the one to be known, the purifier, the syllable Om, and the Rig, Sama and Yajur Vedas.

If you are grieving a parent, the loss is real; the verse offers belonging, not a reason to hurry past mourning.

Meaning today and context

The divine can be approached as father and mother, as the one who holds us. For anyone who feels unparented or alone, this is a reminder of a deeper belonging.

Krishna continues: he is father, mother, sustainer and grandsire of the world, the one to be known, the purifier, the syllable Om and the three Vedas.

9.18 Krishna to Arjuna

gatirbhartā prabhuḥ sākṣī nivāsaḥ śaraṇaṃ suhṛt | prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ sthānaṃ nidhānaṃ bījamavyayam ||

I am the goal, the sustainer, the lord, the witness, the abode, the refuge, the friend; the origin and the dissolution, the ground, the treasure-house and the imperishable seed.

If you are in crisis, please also reach out to a person you trust or Tele-MANAS (14416); turning to God and asking for human help go together.

Meaning today and context

When we feel there is nowhere to turn, the Gita names a refuge and a friend who wants nothing in return. Faith here is a place to rest, not only a belief.

Krishna continues naming himself: the goal, the sustainer, the lord, the witness, the home, the refuge, the friend, origin and dissolution, and the imperishable seed.

9.19 Krishna to Arjuna

tapāmyahamahaṃ varṣaṃ nigṛhṇāmyutsṛjāmi ca | amṛtaṃ caiva mṛtyuśca sadasaccāhamarjuna ||

I give heat; I hold back the rain and send it forth. I am immortality and also death; I am being and non-being, Arjuna.

Not meant to explain away a particular loss or suffering as deserved; grief and questions are allowed.

Meaning today and context

Drought and rain, life and death all belong to one reality. The verse invites us to see even what we fear as part of a larger whole, not as something outside it.

Krishna says he gives heat, holds back and sends the rain, and is both immortality and death, being and non-being.

9.20 Krishna to Arjuna

traividyā māṃ somapāḥ pūtapāpā yajñairiṣṭvā svargatiṃ prārthayante | te puṇyamāsādya surendralokamaśnanti divyāndivi devabhogān ||

Knowers of the three Vedas, drinkers of soma, cleansed of sin, worship me through sacrifices and pray for the way to heaven. Reaching the holy world of the lord of the gods, they enjoy in heaven the divine pleasures of the gods.

Meaning today and context

Good deeds done to earn rewards do bring rewards. But the verse sets up a question: is a reward, even a heavenly one, what we truly want?

Krishna speaks of those versed in the three Vedas who perform sacrifices seeking heaven; through their merit they reach Indra's world and enjoy divine pleasures.

9.21 Krishna to Arjuna

te taṃ bhuktvā svargalokaṃ viśālaṃ kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṃ viśanti | evaṃ trayīdharmamanuprapannā gatāgataṃ kāmakāmā labhante ||

Having enjoyed that vast heavenly world, when their merit is spent they enter the world of mortals. Thus, following the dharma of the three Vedas, desiring desires, they obtain coming and going.

Meaning today and context

Every pleasure that is earned also runs out, and then we start chasing again. Lasting freedom does not come from collecting more rewards.

Krishna continues: when their merit is spent they return to the mortal world; following ritual for the sake of desires, they get only coming and going.

9.22 Krishna to Arjuna

ananyāścintayanto māṃ ye janāḥ paryupāsate | teṣāṃ nityābhiyuktānāṃ yogakṣemaṃ vahāmyaham ||

Those who, with no other thought, meditate on me and worship me, ever united with me: for them I carry what they lack and preserve what they have.

Trust in God is not a reason to stop working, skip medical care or neglect practical needs.

Meaning today and context

When the heart is wholly given, the burden of worrying about getting and keeping is lifted. This is trust that frees us to act well, not a reason to stop acting.

In one of the most loved verses of the Gita, Krishna promises that for those who think of him alone and worship him constantly, he himself carries their yoga and kshema.

9.23 Krishna to Arjuna

ye'pyanyadevatā bhaktā yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ | te'pi māmeva kaunteya yajantyavidhipūrvakam ||

Even those devoted to other gods who worship them with faith, son of Kunti, are worshipping me alone, though not in the prescribed way.

Do not use this verse to belittle other faiths or deities; its thrust is that sincere worship anywhere reaches the one divine.

Meaning today and context

Sincere faith, under whatever name, reaches toward the same ultimate reality. This verse is a ground for respect, not rivalry, between ways of worship.

Krishna says even those who devotedly worship other deities with faith are really worshipping him, though not in the proper way.

9.24 Krishna to Arjuna

For I alone am the enjoyer and the lord of all sacrifices; but they do not know me in truth, and so they fall.

Not a judgement on followers of other paths; it concerns understanding, not which name is used.

Meaning today and context

Every sincere offering finally reaches the one reality. What makes the difference is understanding what we are really offering to.

Krishna explains: he is the enjoyer and lord of all sacrifices, but those who do not know him in truth fall back.

9.25 Krishna to Arjuna

yānti devavratā devānpitṝnyānti pitṛvratāḥ | bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā yānti madyājino'pi mām ||

Those devoted to the gods go to the gods; those devoted to the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship spirits go to the spirits; and those who worship me come to me.

Not a ranking of religions or a reason to look down on ancestor rites or other traditions; Shankara's ranking reflects his own setting.

Meaning today and context

We become like what we give our heart to. It is worth asking honestly what we are really devoted to: money, approval, ancestors' expectations, or the highest.

Krishna says each worshipper reaches what they worship: devotees of the gods go to the gods, of the ancestors to the ancestors, of spirits to the spirits, and his worshippers come to him.

9.26 Krishna to Arjuna

patraṃ puṣpaṃ phalaṃ toyaṃ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati | tadahaṃ bhaktyupahṛtamaśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ ||

Whoever offers me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, that offering of love from one whose heart is pure, I accept.

Meaning today and context

What matters is the love, not the size or cost of the gift. No one is too poor or too small to offer something meaningful.

In a famous verse, Krishna says that whatever is offered with love, even a leaf, a flower, a fruit or a little water, he accepts from the pure-hearted.

9.27 Krishna to Arjuna

yatkaroṣi yadaśnāsi yajjuhoṣi dadāsi yat | yattapasyasi kaunteya tatkuruṣva madarpaṇam ||

Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give, whatever austerity you practise, son of Kunti, do it as an offering to me.

Meaning today and context

Ordinary life, working, eating, giving, can become worship when it is done as an offering. This removes the line between 'spiritual' time and the rest of the day.

Krishna widens the offering to all of life: whatever Arjuna does, eats, offers, gives or endures as discipline, he should do as an offering to Krishna.

9.28 Krishna to Arjuna

śubhāśubhaphalairevaṃ mokṣyase karmabandhanaiḥ | saṃnyāsayogayuktātmā vimukto māmupaiṣyasi ||

Thus you will be freed from the bonds of action, with their good and bad results. With your self joined in the yoga of renunciation, freed, you will come to me.

Meaning today and context

When actions are offered rather than owned, their results, good or bad, stop weighing on us. That inner letting go is real renunciation, without leaving one's life.

Krishna gives the result of offering all actions: freedom from the bonds of good and bad results, and coming to him.

9.29 Krishna to Arjuna

I am the same to all beings; none is hateful to me and none is dear. But those who worship me with devotion are in me, and I am in them.

Meaning today and context

The divine has no favourites, yet a relationship grows when we turn toward it. Grace is always present; turning toward it is our part.

Krishna says he is the same to all beings, hating none and favouring none; yet those who worship him with love are in him, and he in them.

9.30 Krishna to Arjuna

api cetsudurācāro bhajate māmananyabhāk | sādhureva sa mantavyaḥ samyagvyavasito hi saḥ ||

Even if a person of very wicked conduct worships me with undivided devotion, he should be regarded as good, for he has resolved rightly.

This is hope for one who sincerely turns, not an excuse for ongoing harm or for avoiding amends and accountability to people hurt. If guilt or shame feels unbearable, please talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Your past does not have the last word. What counts is the direction you have now firmly chosen; a sincere turning makes a new beginning possible for anyone.

Krishna makes a striking promise: even someone of very bad conduct who worships him with undivided devotion should be regarded as good, for his resolve is now right.

9.31 Krishna to Arjuna

kṣipraṃ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvacchāntiṃ nigacchati | kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati ||

Quickly he becomes righteous and attains lasting peace. Son of Kunti, declare it with certainty: my devotee never perishes.

Meaning today and context

Change can come faster than we fear, and peace is possible even after a hard past. Whoever truly turns toward the good is not lost.

Krishna continues: such a person quickly becomes righteous and finds lasting peace; he asks Arjuna to declare boldly that his devotee never perishes.

9.32 Krishna to Arjuna

māṃ hi pārtha vyapāśritya ye'pi syuḥ pāpayonayaḥ | striyo vaiśyāstathā śūdrāste'pi yānti parāṃ gatim ||

For those who take refuge in me, Partha, even those who may be of sinful birth, women, vaishyas and shudras too, reach the highest goal.

The verse's point is that everyone, without exception, can reach the highest. Its phrasing, and Shankara's reading of women, vaishyas and shudras as 'of sinful birth', reflect the hierarchies of their time; they must never be used to demean women or anyone on the basis of birth, caste or gender.

Meaning today and context

No one is shut out from the highest, whatever their gender, birth or social standing. The verse's real point is that the door is open to everyone without exception.

Krishna says that all who take refuge in him, even those his society regarded as of low birth, and women, vaishyas and shudras, reach the highest goal.

9.33 Krishna to Arjuna

kiṃ punarbrāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayastathā | anityamasukhaṃ lokamimaṃ prāpya bhajasva mām ||

How much more, then, the holy brahmins and the devoted royal sages. Having come into this impermanent, joyless world, worship me.

The contrast with 9.32 reflects the social order of its time; it is not a claim that anyone's worth or spiritual capacity is fixed by birth. 'Joyless world' is not a judgement on your life; if you feel life is not worth living, please reach out (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

Life in this world is brief and its pleasures do not last; that is exactly why this human life is precious. Use it to turn toward what is lasting.

Krishna adds: how much more then the holy brahmins and devoted royal sages; having come into this passing, joyless world, worship me.

9.34 Krishna to Arjuna

manmanā bhava madbhakto madyājī māṃ namaskuru | māmevaiṣyasi yuktvaivamātmānaṃ matparāyaṇaḥ ||

Fix your mind on me, be devoted to me, worship me, bow down to me. Having thus united yourself with me, with me as your supreme goal, you will come to me.

Meaning today and context

The whole path is summed up simply: let your mind, love, actions and humility all point the same way. A life gathered around one centre becomes whole.

Krishna closes the chapter with a direct instruction: fix your mind on me, be devoted to me, worship me, bow to me; so united, you will come to me.
