Chapter 8

8.1 Arjuna to Krishna

kiṃ tadbrahma kimadhyātmaṃ kiṃ karma puruṣottama | adhibhūtaṃ ca kiṃ proktamadhidaivaṃ kimucyate ||

Arjuna said: What is that Brahman? What is the inner self (adhyatma)? What is action, Purushottama? And what is said to be the domain of beings (adhibhuta), and what is called the domain of the gods (adhidaiva)?

Meaning today and context

Arjuna doesn't pretend to understand big words; he asks plainly what they mean. Asking for clear definitions is the start of real understanding.

Chapter 8 opens with Arjuna taking up the terms Krishna used at the end of chapter 7 and asking what each of them means.

8.2 Arjuna to Krishna

adhiyajñaḥ kathaṃ ko'tra dehe'sminmadhusūdana | prayāṇakāle ca kathaṃ jñeyo'si niyatātmabhiḥ ||

Who is the lord of sacrifice (adhiyajna) here in this body, and how, Madhusudana? And how are you to be known at the time of departure by those whose minds are disciplined?

Meaning today and context

Arjuna asks a question many people carry quietly: what matters when life ends? The Gita treats it as a question to be asked openly, not avoided.

Arjuna continues his questions: who is the lord of sacrifice within the body, and how can those who are self-controlled know Krishna at the time of departure from life.

8.3 Krishna to Arjuna

akṣaraṃ brahma paramaṃ svabhāvo'dhyātmamucyate | bhūtabhāvodbhavakaro visargaḥ karmasaṃjñitaḥ ||

The Blessed Lord said: Brahman is the imperishable, the highest. Its own nature (as the self in each being) is called adhyatma. The offering that brings beings into existence is called action.

Meaning today and context

What is deepest in you is the same imperishable reality behind everything. Action, in this view, is fundamentally an offering that sustains life.

Krishna begins to answer: he defines Brahman, adhyatma and karma.

8.4 Krishna to Arjuna

adhibhūtaṃ kṣaro bhāvaḥ puruṣaścādhidaivatam | adhiyajño'hamevātra dehe dehabhṛtāṃ vara ||

The domain of beings (adhibhuta) is perishable existence; the Person (purusha) is the domain of the gods (adhidaiva); and I myself am the lord of sacrifice (adhiyajna) here in the body, best of the embodied.

Meaning today and context

Everything we can touch is passing, but the divine is present right here in our own bodies and actions. The sacred is not only far away.

Krishna completes his definitions: adhibhuta, adhidaiva and adhiyajna.

8.5 Krishna to Arjuna

antakāle ca māmeva smaranmuktvā kalevaram | yaḥ prayāti sa madbhāvaṃ yāti nāstyatra saṃśayaḥ ||

And whoever, at the time of the end, leaves the body and departs remembering me alone, comes to my being. Of this there is no doubt.

If you are grieving: your loss and sorrow come first, and they are real. This verse does not mean a loved one's fate depended on what they thought, or could think, in their last moments, especially if they were unconscious, confused, in pain or died suddenly. It is not medical or end-of-life care advice.

Meaning today and context

This is a promise, not a threat: turning the heart to the divine at the end is enough to reach it. For those keeping vigil by a dying loved one, a prayer, a name or a song may offer comfort, whatever happens.

Krishna answers the question about the time of death: one who leaves the body remembering him attains his being.

8.6 Krishna to Arjuna

yaṃ yaṃ vāpi smaranbhāvaṃ tyajatyante kalevaram | taṃ tamevaiti kaunteya sadā tadbhāvabhāvitaḥ ||

Whatever state of being one remembers when at last leaving the body, to that very state one goes, son of Kunti, having always been absorbed in that state.

Never use this verse to tell a grieving person that their loved one's fate was decided by a frightened, confused or unconscious last moment; the verse itself points to a whole life ('always absorbed'), not one instant. Acknowledge the grief first. Not medical or end-of-life advice.

Meaning today and context

The key words are 'always absorbed': what fills the mind at the end is what we filled it with over a lifetime. So the verse is really about how we live each day, not about one final moment.

Krishna states the general principle behind 8.5: whatever state of being one remembers at the end, one goes to that, having been shaped by it throughout life.

8.7 Krishna to Arjuna

tasmātsarveṣu kāleṣu māmanusmara yudhya ca | mayyarpitamanobuddhirmāmevaiṣyasyasaṃśayaḥ ||

Therefore, at all times remember me, and fight. With your mind and understanding offered to me, you will surely come to me.

'Fight' is Krishna's word to Arjuna in a specific war. It is never a justification for violence or harming anyone; read it as doing one's rightful work.

Meaning today and context

Spiritual life is not separate from daily duty. Keep the divine, or your deepest purpose, in mind while doing the hard work in front of you.

Drawing the conclusion for Arjuna on the battlefield: remember Krishna at all times and fight; with mind and understanding given to him, Arjuna will come to him.

8.8 Krishna to Arjuna

abhyāsayogayuktena cetasā nānyagāminā | paramaṃ puruṣaṃ divyaṃ yāti pārthānucintayan ||

With a mind disciplined by the yoga of practice, not wandering to anything else, meditating constantly, Partha, one goes to the supreme divine Person.

Meaning today and context

Steady attention is built by returning again and again to the same point. Practice, not a single effort, is what shapes the mind.

Krishna says that one who meditates with a mind disciplined by practice, not straying elsewhere, reaches the supreme divine Person.

8.9 Krishna to Arjuna

kaviṃ purāṇamanuśāsitāramaṇoraṇīyāṃsamanusmaredyaḥ | sarvasya dhātāramacintyarūpamādityavarṇaṃ tamasaḥ parastāt ||

One who meditates on the seer, the ancient, the ruler, subtler than the subtle, the sustainer of all, of inconceivable form, radiant as the sun, beyond darkness...

Meaning today and context

The divine is described as beyond anything the mind can picture, yet as light beyond darkness. Contemplating such a vastness can quiet small worries.

Krishna describes the supreme Person to be meditated upon: the ancient seer, ruler of all, subtler than the subtle, sun-coloured, beyond darkness.

8.10 Krishna to Arjuna

prayāṇakāle manasācalena bhaktyā yukto yogabalena caiva | bhruvormadhye prāṇamāveśya samyaksa taṃ paraṃ puruṣamupaiti divyam ||

...at the time of departure, with an unmoving mind, joined with devotion and with the strength of yoga, having placed the life-breath fully between the eyebrows, that person reaches the supreme divine Person.

Describes a traditional yogic ideal, not a practice for the dying or their families to attempt, and not medical or end-of-life advice. No one's loved one is judged by whether they could do this.

Meaning today and context

The verse pictures a yogi who has trained all life and meets death steady and devoted. It describes an ideal of a lifetime's practice, not a test the dying must pass.

Krishna continues the sentence: one who at the time of death, with unmoving mind, devotion and the strength of yoga, places the life-breath between the brows, reaches that supreme Person.

8.11 Krishna to Arjuna

yadakṣaraṃ vedavido vadanti viśanti yadyatayo vītarāgāḥ | yadicchanto brahmacaryaṃ caranti tatte padaṃ saṃgraheṇa pravakṣye ||

That which knowers of the Veda call the imperishable, which ascetics free from passion enter, desiring which people live the life of brahmacharya: that goal I will tell you in brief.

Meaning today and context

Many traditions and disciplines point toward the same goal. Krishna promises to put it simply.

Krishna announces that he will briefly describe the imperishable goal that knowers of the Veda speak of, that ascetics enter and for which people live as celibate students.

8.12 Krishna to Arjuna

sarvadvārāṇi saṃyamya mano hṛdi nirudhya ca | mūrdhnyādhāyātmanaḥ prāṇamāsthito yogadhāraṇām ||

Closing all the gates of the body, confining the mind in the heart, placing one's life-breath in the head, established in yogic concentration...

Describes a traditional yogic death practice. It must never be attempted. Breath-holding or 'leaving the body' practices can be dangerous. If you are having thoughts of ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This describes an advanced traditional practice tied to the moment of death. Its everyday lesson is gentler: gather scattered attention inward.

Krishna describes the yogic way of leaving the body: closing the gates of the senses, holding the mind in the heart and fixing the life-breath in the head.

8.13 Krishna to Arjuna

omityekākṣaraṃ brahma vyāharanmāmanusmaran | yaḥ prayāti tyajandehaṃ sa yāti paramāṃ gatim ||

...uttering Om, the one-syllabled Brahman, and remembering me, whoever departs, leaving the body, reaches the highest goal.

Part of the yogic death practice of 8.12; never to be attempted. If grieving: a loved one who could not chant or remember at the end is not lost because of it. Not medical or end-of-life advice.

Meaning today and context

Om is offered as a simple support for remembering the divine. Many families chant it near a dying person as an act of love; it is a comfort, not a requirement.

Completing the description: uttering Om, the one-syllable Brahman, and remembering Krishna, one who departs leaving the body reaches the highest goal.

8.14 Krishna to Arjuna

ananyacetāḥ satataṃ yo māṃ smarati nityaśaḥ | tasyāhaṃ sulabhaḥ pārtha nityayuktasya yoginaḥ ||

Whoever remembers me constantly, every day, with a mind turned to nothing else, for that ever-devoted yogi I am easy to reach, Partha.

Meaning today and context

After the difficult yogic method, this is reassurance: steady, everyday love and remembrance is enough. The divine is not hard to reach for one who keeps turning toward it.

Krishna offers an easier way: for the one who remembers him constantly with undivided mind, he is easy to reach.

8.15 Krishna to Arjuna

māmupetya punarjanma duḥkhālayamaśāśvatam | nāpnuvanti mahātmānaḥ saṃsiddhiṃ paramāṃ gatāḥ ||

Having come to me, the great souls do not again take birth, which is the home of sorrow and impermanent; they have reached the highest perfection.

Calling life 'a home of sorrow' is a spiritual teaching about impermanence, not a statement that life is not worth living. If you are in despair, please reach out: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The Gita is frank that life in the world brings sorrow and nothing in it lasts. It points to a freedom beyond that cycle.

Krishna says the great souls who reach him do not come back to rebirth, which is the home of sorrow and impermanent.

8.16 Krishna to Arjuna

ā brahmabhuvanāllokāḥ punarāvartino'rjuna | māmupetya tu kaunteya punarjanma na vidyate ||

All worlds, up to the realm of Brahma, are subject to return, Arjuna; but having come to me, son of Kunti, there is no rebirth.

Meaning today and context

Even the highest worldly rewards and heavens are temporary. Only what is beyond all of them gives lasting freedom.

Krishna says all worlds, up to the world of Brahma, are subject to return, but one who reaches him is not born again.

8.17 Krishna to Arjuna

sahasrayugaparyantamaharyadbrahmaṇo viduḥ | rātriṃ yugasahasrāntāṃ te'horātravido janāḥ ||

Those who know that the day of Brahma ends after a thousand ages, and his night ends after a thousand ages, are people who truly know day and night.

Meaning today and context

Set against cosmic time, our own lives and worries look small. That perspective can be steadying rather than frightening.

Krishna describes cosmic time: a day of Brahma lasts a thousand ages, and his night as long.

8.18 Krishna to Arjuna

avyaktādvyaktayaḥ sarvāḥ prabhavantyaharāgame | rātryāgame pralīyante tatraivāvyaktasaṃjñake ||

At the coming of day, all manifest things come forth from the unmanifest; at the coming of night they dissolve into that very thing called the unmanifest.

Meaning today and context

Everything that appears also disappears, in great rhythms. Seeing this pattern can loosen our grip on what is passing.

Krishna says that at the coming of Brahma's day all manifest things arise from the unmanifest, and at the coming of night they dissolve back into it.

8.19 Krishna to Arjuna

bhūtagrāmaḥ sa evāyaṃ bhūtvā bhūtvā pralīyate | rātryāgame'vaśaḥ pārtha prabhavatyaharāgame ||

This same multitude of beings, coming into being again and again, dissolves helplessly at the coming of night, Partha, and arises at the coming of day.

Meaning today and context

Without freedom, beings are carried along by cycles they do not control. The Gita names this helplessness so we can seek a way beyond it.

Krishna says the same multitude of beings comes into being again and again, dissolving at nightfall and arising at daybreak, without choice.

8.20 Krishna to Arjuna

But beyond that unmanifest there is another, eternal unmanifest being, which does not perish when all beings perish.

If grieving: this is not a reason to stop mourning. Grief is natural; the verse offers perspective, not a rebuke.

Meaning today and context

Beneath all change there is something that does not change. In loss, this can be a quiet place to stand.

Krishna points beyond the cosmic unmanifest to another, eternal unmanifest reality that does not perish when all beings perish.

8.21 Krishna to Arjuna

avyakto'kṣara ityuktastamāhuḥ paramāṃ gatim | yaṃ prāpya na nivartante taddhāma paramaṃ mama ||

That unmanifest is called the imperishable; they call it the highest goal. Having reached it, they do not return. That is my supreme abode.

Meaning today and context

The final goal is described not as a place to visit but as a home from which there is no falling back.

Krishna identifies that unmanifest imperishable as the highest goal and his own supreme abode, from which there is no return.

8.22 Krishna to Arjuna

puruṣaḥ sa paraḥ pārtha bhaktyā labhyastvananyayā | yasyāntaḥsthāni bhūtāni yena sarvamidaṃ tatam ||

That supreme Person, Partha, within whom all beings dwell and by whom all this is pervaded, is to be reached by undivided devotion.

Meaning today and context

The way to the highest is not only through complex practice but through wholehearted love. Everything, including us, already rests within it.

Krishna says that supreme Person, in whom all beings dwell and by whom all is pervaded, is reached by undivided devotion.

8.23 Krishna to Arjuna

yatra kāle tvanāvṛttimāvṛttiṃ caiva yoginaḥ | prayātā yānti taṃ kālaṃ vakṣyāmi bharatarṣabha ||

Now I will tell you, best of the Bharatas, the time at which yogis who depart go to no return, and also to return.

If you have lost someone: your grief comes first. This verse is not a judgement on when or how your loved one died. Not medical or end-of-life advice.

Meaning today and context

This begins an ancient Vedic teaching about paths after death. It belongs to its scriptural setting and is not a timetable for judging anyone's death.

Krishna introduces the teaching on the two paths: he will describe the 'time' at which departing yogis go never to return, or return.

8.24 Krishna to Arjuna

agnirjyotirahaḥ śuklaḥ ṣaṇmāsā uttarāyaṇam | tatra prayātā gacchanti brahma brahmavido janāḥ ||

Fire, light, day, the bright fortnight, the six months of the sun's northern course: departing by this, people who know Brahman go to Brahman.

Never tell a grieving person that a loved one's fate depends on the season, day or hour of death. Even Shankara says the one who truly knows has no 'path' to travel at all. Acknowledge the loss first. Not medical or end-of-life advice.

Meaning today and context

The images are of light and rising: the path of knowledge leads upward. Traditional readings take these as stages of a path, not dates on a calendar that decide anyone's fate.

Krishna describes the bright path: fire, light, day, the bright fortnight, the six months of the northern course of the sun; knowers of Brahman who depart by it go to Brahman.

8.25 Krishna to Arjuna

dhūmo rātristathā kṛṣṇaḥ ṣaṇmāsā dakṣiṇāyanam | tatra cāndramasaṃ jyotiryogī prāpya nivartate ||

Smoke, night, the dark fortnight, the six months of the sun's southern course: by this the yogi reaches the light of the moon and returns.

Never use this verse to tell a grieving family that their loved one died at an 'inauspicious' time and so will suffer. Shankara reads it as about the kind of life and motive (works done for reward), not the calendar date. Acknowledge grief first. Not medical or end-of-life advice.

Meaning today and context

Good deeds done for reward bring a reward that eventually runs out. The verse contrasts temporary gain with lasting freedom; it is not a curse on those who die at a certain time.

Krishna describes the dark path: smoke, night, the dark fortnight, the six months of the southern course; the yogi who goes by it reaches the lunar light and returns.

8.26 Krishna to Arjuna

śuklakṛṣṇe gatī hyete jagataḥ śāśvate mate | ekayā yātyanāvṛttimanyayāvartate punaḥ ||

These two paths of the world, the bright and the dark, are considered eternal. By one, one goes to no return; by the other, one returns again.

Not a statement about the time or manner of any particular death. If grieving, acknowledge the loss first.

Meaning today and context

Two basic directions run through life: toward light and understanding, or toward repeating the same cycles. The choice shows in how we live.

Krishna sums up: these bright and dark paths are held to be eternal; by one, one does not return, by the other, one returns.

8.27 Krishna to Arjuna

naite sṛtī pārtha jānanyogī muhyati kaścana | tasmātsarveṣu kāleṣu yogayukto bhavārjuna ||

Knowing these two paths, Partha, no yogi is deluded. Therefore at all times, Arjuna, be steadfast in yoga.

Meaning today and context

The point of the teaching about death is not fear or calculation but how to live now: steady, clear and centred, at all times.

Krishna draws the practical lesson: the yogi who knows these two paths is not deluded, so Arjuna should be steadfast in yoga at all times.

8.28 Krishna to Arjuna

vedeṣu yajñeṣu tapaḥsu caiva dāneṣu yatpuṇyaphalaṃ pradiṣṭam | atyeti tatsarvamidaṃ viditvā yogī paraṃ sthānamupaiti cādyam ||

Whatever fruit of merit is declared for the Vedas, sacrifices, austerities and gifts, the yogi who knows this goes beyond it all and reaches the supreme, primal abode.

Meaning today and context

Rituals, study and good works have their value, but understanding goes further than any reward they can earn.

Krishna closes the chapter: the yogi who knows this goes beyond all the merit promised for Vedic study, sacrifice, austerity and charity, and reaches the supreme, primal state.
