Chapter 13

13.1 Krishna to Arjuna

idaṃ śarīraṃ kaunteya kṣetramityabhidhīyate | etadyo vetti taṃ prāhuḥ kṣetrajña iti tadvidaḥ ||

This body, son of Kunti, is called the field. The one who knows it is called the knower of the field by those who know these things.

Meaning today and context

You have a body, a mind and moods, but you are also the one who is aware of them. Noticing that difference is the first step out of being completely swept along by them.

Krishna opens a new teaching for Arjuna: the body is called the field (kshetra), and the one who knows it is called the knower of the field (kshetrajna).

13.2 Krishna to Arjuna

kṣetrajñaṃ cāpi māṃ viddhi sarvakṣetreṣu bhārata | kṣetrakṣetrajñayorjñānaṃ yattajjñānaṃ mataṃ mama ||

Know me also as the knower of the field in all fields, Bharata. The knowledge of the field and of its knower: that, in my view, is knowledge.

Meaning today and context

The awareness in you is not a small private thing cut off from everyone else; the Gita says it is one with the divine in all beings. Real knowledge, here, is knowing what you are, not only knowing facts.

Krishna tells Arjuna that he himself is the knower in every field, and that knowing the field and its knower is true knowledge.

13.3 Krishna to Arjuna

tatkṣetraṃ yacca yādṛkca yadvikāri yataśca yat | sa ca yo yatprabhāvaśca tatsamāsena me śṛṇu ||

What that field is, what it is like, what its changes are, from what it arises; and who he (the knower) is and what his powers are: hear that from me in brief.

Meaning today and context

Before changing how we live, it helps to look clearly at what we are made of: body, mind, habits, and the awareness behind them. The Gita sets out to map this carefully.

Krishna announces what he will explain: what the field is, its nature and changes, where it comes from, and who the knower is and what his powers are.

13.4 Krishna to Arjuna

ṛṣibhirbahudhā gītaṃ chandobhirvividhaiḥ pṛthak | brahmasūtrapadaiścaiva hetumadbhirviniścitaiḥ ||

It has been sung by the sages in many ways, separately in various Vedic metres, and also in the well-reasoned, decisive words of the Brahma-sutras.

Meaning today and context

Krishna does not ask for blind belief; he points to a long tradition and to reasoning that has tested this teaching. Insight is strongest when experience, tradition and reason agree.

Krishna says this teaching has been sung by sages in many ways, in the Vedic hymns, and settled by reasoned statements about Brahman.

13.5 Krishna to Arjuna

mahābhūtānyahaṃkāro buddhiravyaktameva ca | indriyāṇi daśaikaṃ ca pañca cendriyagocarāḥ ||

The great elements, the ego, the intellect and the unmanifest; the ten senses and the one (mind), and the five fields of the senses;

महाभूत, अहंकार, बुद्धि और अव्यक्त (मूल प्रकृति); दस इन्द्रियाँ और एक मन, तथा इन्द्रियों के पाँच विषय;

Meaning today and context

Even the intellect and the sense of 'I' are listed as part of the field: things we can observe, not the observer. This gives some room to step back from our own thinking.

Krishna begins listing what makes up the field: the great elements, ego, intellect, the unmanifest, the senses, the mind and the sense objects.

13.6 Krishna to Arjuna

icchā dveṣaḥ sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ saṃghātaścetanā dhṛtiḥ | etatkṣetraṃ samāsena savikāramudāhṛtam ||

Desire, aversion, pleasure, pain, the aggregate (of body and senses), awareness and fortitude: this, in brief, is the field together with its changes.

Meaning today and context

Wanting, disliking, pleasure and pain are things that happen in you and can be watched, like weather. You can feel them fully without believing they are all you are.

Krishna completes the list of the field: desire, aversion, pleasure, pain, the bodily aggregate, awareness and steadiness are also part of it.

13.7 Krishna to Arjuna

amānitvamadambhitvamahiṃsā kṣāntirārjavam | ācāryopāsanaṃ śaucaṃ sthairyamātmavinigrahaḥ ||

Absence of self-importance, absence of pretence, non-harming, patience, straightforwardness, service of the teacher, purity, steadiness, self-restraint;

मान न चाहना, दम्भ न करना, अहिंसा, क्षमाशीलता, सरलता, आचार्य की सेवा, पवित्रता, स्थिरता और आत्मसंयम;

Service of a teacher means respect and learning, not blind obedience. No spiritual teacher has the right to exploit, abuse or control anyone.

Meaning today and context

The Gita says knowledge shows in character: not needing to be praised, not showing off goodness, not hurting others, staying patient when wronged, being straight with people. These are everyday tests anyone can practise at home and at work.

Krishna begins listing the qualities he calls 'knowledge': humility, freedom from pretence, non-harming, patience, straightforwardness, service of the teacher, purity, steadiness and self-control.

13.8 Krishna to Arjuna

indriyārtheṣu vairāgyamanahaṃkāra eva ca | janmamṛtyujarāvyādhiduḥkhadoṣānudarśanam ||

Dispassion toward the objects of the senses, and absence of ego; seeing again and again the suffering and flaw in birth, death, old age and illness;

इन्द्रियों के विषयों में वैराग्य, अहंकार का अभाव, और जन्म, मृत्यु, बुढ़ापा तथा रोग में दुख और दोष को बार-बार देखना;

Reflecting on illness and death is meant to give perspective, not to dwell in despair. If thoughts of death or hopelessness feel heavy, please talk to someone; in India, Tele-MANAS is free at 14416.

Meaning today and context

Looking honestly at ageing, illness and death, instead of looking away, loosens our grip on things that cannot last. It is meant to bring perspective and calm, not gloom.

Krishna continues the list of qualities that are 'knowledge': dispassion toward sense objects, freedom from ego, and seeing clearly the pain in birth, death, old age and illness.

13.9 Krishna to Arjuna

asaktiranabhiṣvaṅgaḥ putradāragṛhādiṣu | nityaṃ ca samacittatvamiṣṭāniṣṭopapattiṣu ||

Non-attachment; not being wrapped up in son, wife, home and the like; and constant evenness of mind in the face of what is wanted and what is unwanted;

आसक्ति का अभाव; पुत्र, पत्नी, घर आदि में ममता से लिपटे न रहना; और प्रिय तथा अप्रिय की प्राप्ति में सदा समान चित्त रहना;

This is not advice to neglect, leave or stop caring for family. It is about not losing oneself in possessive identification. The verse is addressed to a man of its time ('wife'); it applies equally to any person and any relationship.

Meaning today and context

You can love your family deeply without making your whole sense of self depend on them. Caring fully while not losing yourself in them lets you stay steady and helpful when things go well or badly.

Krishna continues: non-attachment, not being lost in identification with son, wife and home, and steady evenness of mind in wanted and unwanted events.

13.10 Krishna to Arjuna

mayi cānanyayogena bhaktiravyabhicāriṇī | viviktadeśasevitvamaratirjanasaṃsadi ||

Unswerving devotion to me through single-minded yoga; resorting to secluded places; no delight in the bustle of crowds;

अनन्य योग से मुझमें अटल भक्ति; एकांत स्थान में रहने की रुचि; और भीड़-भाड़ में रस न लेना;

This is not advice to cut oneself off from people. Isolation can deepen loneliness and low mood; quiet time is a practice, not a withdrawal from those who care for you. Shankara's contrast between 'uncultured' and 'cultured' company should not be used to look down on anyone.

Meaning today and context

Inner clarity grows with regular quiet time and with a steady focus, instead of constant noise and company. Making room for solitude is part of understanding oneself.

Krishna continues: unwavering devotion to him, a liking for quiet places, and no relish for crowds.

13.11 Krishna to Arjuna

adhyātmajñānanityatvaṃ tattvajñānārthadarśanam | etajjñānamiti proktamajñānaṃ yadato'nyathā ||

Constancy in knowledge of the Self, and keeping in view the aim of the knowledge of truth: this is declared to be knowledge; what is other than this is ignorance.

Meaning today and context

For the Gita, a person who is proud, showy and harsh is not wise, however learned. Knowledge is measured by how one lives, and keeping the larger purpose in view is what keeps practice going.

Krishna closes the list: constancy in knowledge of the Self and keeping the goal of truth in view. This is knowledge; whatever is opposite is ignorance.

13.12 Krishna to Arjuna

jñeyaṃ yattatpravakṣyāmi yajjñātvāmṛtamaśnute | anādimatparaṃ brahma na sattannāsaducyate ||

I will tell you what is to be known, knowing which one attains immortality: the beginningless supreme Brahman. It is said to be neither being nor non-being.

Meaning today and context

The deepest reality is not one more object to define or argue about. The Gita points to it by saying what it is not, inviting a kind of knowing that goes beyond words.

Krishna now turns to what is to be known: the beginningless supreme Brahman, which is called neither being nor non-being.

13.13 Krishna to Arjuna

sarvataḥpāṇipādaṃ tatsarvatokṣiśiromukham | sarvataḥśrutimalloke sarvamāvṛtya tiṣṭhati ||

Its hands and feet are everywhere, its eyes, heads and mouths everywhere, its ears everywhere in the world; it stands enveloping all.

Meaning today and context

Every hand that works and every eye that sees is, in this vision, an expression of one life. That can change how we look at the people around us.

Krishna describes the knowable Brahman as having hands, feet, eyes, heads, mouths and ears everywhere, pervading everything.

13.14 Krishna to Arjuna

sarvendriyaguṇābhāsaṃ sarvendriyavivarjitam | asaktaṃ sarvabhṛccaiva nirguṇaṃ guṇabhoktṛ ca ||

It shines through the functions of all the senses, yet is free of all senses; unattached, yet supporting all; free of the gunas, yet the experiencer of the gunas.

Meaning today and context

Awareness lets us see, hear and think, yet it is not itself any of those activities. Being involved without being stuck is possible because of this.

Krishna continues: Brahman shines through the functions of all the senses yet is without senses; unattached yet supporting all; without qualities yet the experiencer of qualities.

13.15 Krishna to Arjuna

bahirantaśca bhūtānāmacaraṃ carameva ca | sūkṣmatvāttadavijñeyaṃ dūrasthaṃ cāntike ca tat ||

It is outside and inside beings, unmoving and moving. Because of its subtlety it is not to be known. It is far away, and it is near.

Meaning today and context

What we search for far away may be closest of all. Its subtlety is why it is missed, not because it is absent.

Krishna says Brahman is outside and inside all beings, moving and unmoving, too subtle to be known, far away and yet near.

13.16 Krishna to Arjuna

avibhaktaṃ ca bhūteṣu vibhaktamiva ca sthitam | bhūtabhartṛ ca tajjñeyaṃ grasiṣṇu prabhaviṣṇu ca ||

Undivided, it stands as if divided among beings. It is to be known as the sustainer of beings, their devourer and their creator.

Meaning today and context

The separateness between us is real at one level but not the deepest truth. Remembering the shared ground can soften rivalry and resentment.

Krishna says Brahman is undivided yet seems divided among beings; it sustains them, devours them and brings them forth.

13.17 Krishna to Arjuna

jyotiṣāmapi tajjyotistamasaḥ paramucyate | jñānaṃ jñeyaṃ jñānagamyaṃ hṛdi sarvasya viṣṭhitam ||

It is the light even of lights, said to be beyond darkness. It is knowledge, the object of knowledge, and what is reached by knowledge, seated in the heart of all.

Meaning today and context

What you are looking for is already in your own heart, not only in books or distant places. Even in a dark time, that light has not gone out.

Krishna says Brahman is the light of lights beyond darkness; it is knowledge, the known and the goal of knowledge, seated in every heart.

13.18 Krishna to Arjuna

iti kṣetraṃ tathā jñānaṃ jñeyaṃ coktaṃ samāsataḥ | madbhakta etadvijñāya madbhāvāyopapadyate ||

Thus the field, and knowledge, and the knowable have been told in brief. My devotee, understanding this, becomes fit for my state of being.

Meaning today and context

Understanding and devotion are not rivals here: the one who loves and also understands is the one who arrives. Knowledge deepens love, and love gives knowledge its direction.

Krishna sums up: the field, knowledge and the knowable have been described in brief; his devotee who understands this reaches his state.

13.19 Krishna to Arjuna

prakṛtiṃ puruṣaṃ caiva viddhyanādī ubhāvapi | vikārāṃśca guṇāṃścaiva viddhi prakṛtisaṃbhavān ||

Know that nature and spirit are both beginningless; and know that the modifications and the gunas are born of nature.

Meaning today and context

Our moods, tendencies and bodily changes come from nature and follow its patterns. Seeing them as nature's workings, not as our deepest identity, makes them easier to work with.

Krishna begins a new framing: nature (prakriti) and spirit (purusha) are both beginningless, and all changes and gunas arise from nature.

13.20 Krishna to Arjuna

kāryakāraṇakartṛtve hetuḥ prakṛtirucyate | puruṣaḥ sukhaduḥkhānāṃ bhoktṛtve heturucyate ||

Nature is said to be the cause in the making of body, instruments and agency; spirit is said to be the cause in the experiencing of pleasure and pain.

Meaning today and context

Activity happens through body and mind; experiencing it as 'my pleasure, my pain' is where we get caught. Seeing this split clearly is a key to inner freedom.

Krishna says nature is the cause of body, senses and action, while spirit is the cause of the experience of pleasure and pain.

13.21 Krishna to Arjuna

puruṣaḥ prakṛtistho hi bhuṅkte prakṛtijānguṇān | kāraṇaṃ guṇasaṅgo'sya sadasadyonijanmasu ||

Spirit, seated in nature, experiences the gunas born of nature. Attachment to the gunas is the cause of its births in good and evil wombs.

'Good and evil wombs' is a traditional idea about rebirth. It should never be used to judge anyone's worth by the family, caste or circumstances they were born into.

Meaning today and context

It is not experience itself that binds us but clinging to it: needing the pleasant, fighting the unpleasant. Loosening that clinging changes the direction of a life.

Krishna says spirit, seated in nature, experiences the gunas born of nature, and attachment to the gunas is the cause of births in good and bad wombs.

13.22 Krishna to Arjuna

upadraṣṭānumantā ca bhartā bhoktā maheśvaraḥ | paramātmeti cāpyukto dehe'sminpuruṣaḥ paraḥ ||

The witness, the one who consents, the supporter, the experiencer, the great Lord, also called the supreme Self: this is the supreme spirit in this body.

Meaning today and context

There is a part of you that simply witnesses: it sees anger rise and fall without being the anger. Learning to rest as that witness is the heart of many meditation practices.

Krishna describes the supreme spirit in the body as witness, permitter, supporter, experiencer, the great Lord and the supreme Self.

13.23 Krishna to Arjuna

ya evaṃ vetti puruṣaṃ prakṛtiṃ ca guṇaiḥ saha | sarvathā vartamāno'pi na sa bhūyo'bhijāyate ||

One who knows spirit, and nature with its gunas, in this way, is not born again, however he may be living.

'However he may be living' does not license any conduct. Shankara himself adds 'how much more one who keeps to right conduct'; the verse describes freedom born of knowledge, not permission to harm.

Meaning today and context

Freedom here comes from insight, not from outward status or a particular lifestyle. A person in any walk of life can have this understanding.

Krishna says one who truly knows spirit and nature with its gunas is not born again, however he may be living.

13.24 Krishna to Arjuna

dhyānenātmani paśyanti ke cidātmānamātmanā | anye sāṃkhyena yogena karmayogena cāpare ||

Some see the Self in the self by the self through meditation; others by the yoga of discernment (Sankhya); and still others by the yoga of action.

Meaning today and context

There is no single route that suits everyone. Some find clarity in quiet meditation, some in careful reflection, some in selfless work; all can lead to the same place.

Krishna says people come to see the Self in different ways: some by meditation, others by the path of knowledge, others by the yoga of action.

13.25 Krishna to Arjuna

anye tvevamajānantaḥ śrutvānyebhya upāsate | te'pi cātitarantyeva mṛtyuṃ śrutiparāyaṇāḥ ||

Others, not knowing this, hear it from others and worship. They too, devoted to what they have heard, certainly cross beyond death.

Meaning today and context

You do not need to be a scholar or have deep insight to begin. Sincerely following good teaching you have heard, with trust, is itself a path that leads somewhere.

Krishna adds that others, not knowing this themselves, hear it from others and worship; they too, devoted to what they have heard, cross beyond death.

13.26 Krishna to Arjuna

yāvatsaṃjāyate kiṃ citsattvaṃ sthāvarajaṅgamam | kṣetrakṣetrajñasaṃyogāttadviddhi bharatarṣabha ||

Whatever being is born, unmoving or moving, know it to arise from the union of the field and the knower of the field, best of the Bharatas.

Meaning today and context

Every living thing is matter lit by awareness. That shared make-up gives a reason to treat all life with respect.

Krishna says whatever is born, moving or unmoving, arises from the union of the field and the knower of the field.

13.27 Krishna to Arjuna

samaṃ sarveṣu bhūteṣu tiṣṭhantaṃ parameśvaram | vinaśyatsvavinaśyantaṃ yaḥ paśyati sa paśyati ||

One who sees the supreme Lord standing equally in all beings, the undying within the dying: that one truly sees.

Meaning today and context

Seeing the same divine presence in a colleague, a stranger, a rival or an animal changes how we treat them. It also gives a steady ground beneath the losses that come with everything perishable.

Krishna says the one who sees the supreme Lord present equally in all beings, imperishable among the perishing, truly sees.

13.28 Krishna to Arjuna

Seeing the Lord equally present everywhere, one does not harm the self by the self, and then goes to the highest goal.

Meaning today and context

When we see the same Self in others, hurting them becomes hurting ourselves, and we stop. Living from that recognition also ends the quiet self-harm of forgetting who we are.

Krishna says one who sees the Lord equally present everywhere does not harm the self by the self, and so reaches the highest goal.

13.29 Krishna to Arjuna

prakṛtyaiva ca karmāṇi kriyamāṇāni sarvaśaḥ | yaḥ paśyati tathātmānamakartāraṃ sa paśyati ||

One who sees that all actions are done in every way by nature alone, and likewise that the Self is not the doer: that one truly sees.

This is insight into the deepest Self, not an excuse. In everyday life we remain responsible for what we do and for its effect on others.

Meaning today and context

Much of what we do runs on habit, body and circumstance. Seeing this loosens pride in success and the crushing weight of 'I alone did it' in failure.

Krishna says one who sees all actions as done by nature alone, and the Self as not the doer, truly sees.

13.30 Krishna to Arjuna

yadā bhūtapṛthagbhāvamekasthamanupaśyati | tata eva ca vistāraṃ brahma saṃpadyate tadā ||

When one sees the separate existence of beings as resting in the One, and their spreading out from that alone, then one attains Brahman.

Meaning today and context

Diversity and unity are not opposites: the many forms of life spring from one source. Holding both together makes difference something to wonder at rather than fear.

Krishna says when one sees the separate existence of beings as resting in the One and spreading out from it, one becomes Brahman.

13.31 Krishna to Arjuna

anāditvānnirguṇatvātparamātmāyamavyayaḥ | śarīrastho'pi kaunteya na karoti na lipyate ||

Because it is beginningless and without qualities, this imperishable supreme Self, though dwelling in the body, son of Kunti, neither acts nor is stained.

That the deepest Self is untouched does not mean actions have no consequences in this life. Harm done should still be owned and repaired.

Meaning today and context

Whatever you have done or suffered, your deepest Self has not been damaged or soiled. That is a ground for hope and for starting again.

Krishna says the supreme Self, being beginningless and without qualities, is imperishable; though dwelling in the body it neither acts nor is stained.

13.32 Krishna to Arjuna

yathā sarvagataṃ saukṣmyādākāśaṃ nopalipyate | sarvatrāvasthito dehe tathātmā nopalipyate ||

As all-pervading space, because of its subtlety, is not stained, so the Self, present everywhere in the body, is not stained.

Meaning today and context

Space holds smoke, dust and storms without becoming any of them. In the same way, painful experiences pass through us without touching what we most deeply are.

Krishna gives an image: just as all-pervading space is not stained because of its subtlety, the Self present everywhere in the body is not stained.

13.33 Krishna to Arjuna

yathā prakāśayatyekaḥ kṛtsnaṃ lokamimaṃ raviḥ | kṣetraṃ kṣetrī tathā kṛtsnaṃ prakāśayati bhārata ||

As the one sun illumines this whole world, so the lord of the field illumines the whole field, Bharata.

Meaning today and context

Like sunlight, awareness shows up everything in body and mind without being dirtied by what it shows. Your thoughts are lit by you; they are not you.

Krishna gives another image: as the one sun lights up this whole world, the lord of the field lights up the whole field.

13.34 Krishna to Arjuna

kṣetrakṣetrajñayorevamantaraṃ jñānacakṣuṣā | bhūtaprakṛtimokṣaṃ ca ye viduryānti te param ||

Those who, with the eye of knowledge, know in this way the difference between the field and the knower of the field, and the freedom of beings from nature, go to the supreme.

Meaning today and context

Learning to tell apart what changes in us from the awareness that sees it is the whole lesson of this chapter. With that 'eye of knowledge', life's ups and downs lose their power to define us.

Krishna concludes the chapter: those who see with the eye of knowledge the difference between field and knower, and the freedom of beings from nature, reach the supreme.
