Chapter 15

15.1 Krishna to Arjuna

ūrdhvamūlamadhaḥśākhamaśvatthaṃ prāhuravyayam | chandāṃsi yasya parṇāni yastaṃ veda sa vedavit ||

The Blessed Lord said: They speak of an imperishable aśvattha tree with its roots above and its branches below, whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows it knows the Veda.

Meaning today and context

The busy, branching world we live in has a source beyond it. Understanding how our whole life of wanting and doing grows, and where it is rooted, is itself a kind of deep knowledge.

Krishna opens the chapter on the Supreme Person with an image: the world of birth and death is an upside-down aśvattha (holy fig) tree.

15.2 Krishna to Arjuna

adhaścordhvaṃ prasṛtāstasya śākhā guṇapravṛddhā viṣayapravālāḥ | adhaśca mūlānyanusaṃtatāni karmānubandhīni manuṣyaloke ||

Its branches spread below and above, nourished by the guṇas, with the objects of the senses as their shoots. And below, its roots stretch on and on, binding to action in the world of humans.

Meaning today and context

Each desire sprouts new shoots, and each action puts down new roots that pull us into further action. Noticing this pattern is the first step to not being ruled by it.

Krishna continues the image of the tree: its branches spread everywhere, fed by the guṇas, and its secondary roots bind people to action in the human world.

15.3 Krishna to Arjuna

na rūpamasyeha tathopalabhyate nānto na cādirna ca saṃpratiṣṭhā | aśvatthamenaṃ suvirūḍhamūlamasaṅgaśastreṇa dṛḍhena chittvā ||

Its form is not perceived here as it is, nor its end, nor its beginning, nor its foundation. Having cut down this firmly rooted aśvattha with the strong axe of non-attachment...

The axe is for inner clinging, not for people. This is not advice to cut off family, relationships or responsibilities. Shankara's reading (turning away from desire for children, wealth and worlds) belongs to the monastic path he wrote for, not an instruction to abandon anyone.

Meaning today and context

We can never fully map where our cravings began or where they end, but we don't need to. What frees us is a firm, practised non-clinging, cutting the inner grip, not running away from life.

Krishna says the true shape of this tree cannot be grasped, and that it must be cut down with the strong axe of non-attachment.

15.4 Krishna to Arjuna

tataḥ padaṃ tatparimārgitavyaṃ yasmingatā na nivartanti bhūyaḥ | tameva cādyaṃ puruṣaṃ prapadye yataḥ pravṛttiḥ prasṛtā purāṇī ||

...then that state must be sought, having reached which they do not return again, saying: 'I take refuge in that primal Person alone, from whom the ancient flow of activity streamed forth.'

'Not returning' describes spiritual freedom, not a wish to leave life. If you feel like disappearing or not being alive, please reach out to someone now; in India call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Letting go is only half the work; the other half is turning toward something deeper. Clearing away clinging leaves room to seek and take refuge in the source of life.

Krishna completes the sentence: after cutting the tree, one must seek the state from which there is no return, taking refuge in the primal Person.

15.5 Krishna to Arjuna

nirmānamohā jitasaṅgadoṣā adhyātmanityā vinivṛttakāmāḥ | dvaṃdvairvimuktāḥ sukhaduḥkhasaṃjñairgacchantyamūḍhāḥ padamavyayaṃ tat ||

Free from pride and delusion, with the fault of attachment conquered, always dwelling on the inner Self, with desires turned away, released from the pairs called pleasure and pain, the undeluded reach that imperishable state.

Shankara applies this to monks, but the qualities themselves (humility, clarity, freedom from clinging) are open to anyone living a family and working life. It is not advice to renounce one's household.

Meaning today and context

This is a practical checklist for inner freedom: drop the need to be important, see clearly, loosen your grip on things, stay connected to what is deepest, and don't be thrown around by ups and downs.

Krishna describes the people who reach that imperishable state: free of pride and delusion, with attachment conquered and desires stilled.

15.6 Krishna to Arjuna

na tadbhāsayate sūryo na śaśāṅko na pāvakaḥ | yadgatvā na nivartante taddhāma paramaṃ mama ||

The sun does not illumine it, nor the moon, nor fire. Having gone there, they do not return: that is my supreme abode.

Meaning today and context

There is a light that needs no outside source: the awareness by which everything else is seen. The deepest peace is found there, not in anything the world can switch on or off.

Krishna describes his supreme abode, the state from which there is no return.

15.7 Krishna to Arjuna

mamaivāṃśo jīvaloke jīvabhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ | manaḥṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi prakṛtisthāni karṣati ||

A portion of me alone, eternal, has become the living being in the world of the living; it draws to itself the senses, with the mind as the sixth, which rest in nature.

Meaning today and context

At your core you are not a mistake or a lesser being. Every person, including you, carries something eternal and divine; your worth is not earned through marks, money or approval.

Krishna reveals that the individual living being is an eternal portion of himself, which draws the senses and mind around it.

15.8 Krishna to Arjuna

śarīraṃ yadavāpnoti yaccāpyutkrāmatīśvaraḥ | gṛhītvaitāni saṃyāti vāyurgandhānivāśayāt ||

When the lord of the body takes on a body, and when it leaves one, it takes these along and goes, as the wind carries scents from their source.

If you are grieving, your loss and pain are real. This verse does not ask you to stop mourning.

Meaning today and context

The Gita sees death as a passage, not an erasure: the living being moves on, carrying its tendencies with it. For some this brings comfort; it also reminds us that the habits we build travel with us.

Krishna describes how the living being moves from one body to another, carrying the mind and senses with it.

15.9 Krishna to Arjuna

śrotraṃ cakṣuḥ sparśanaṃ ca rasanaṃ ghrāṇameva ca | adhiṣṭhāya manaścāyaṃ viṣayānupasevate ||

Presiding over hearing, sight, touch, taste and smell, and over the mind, it enjoys the objects of the senses.

Meaning today and context

Everything we enjoy reaches us through the senses and the mind, but the one who experiences is more than them. Seeing this gives some freedom from being driven by every sensation.

Krishna explains that the living being experiences the world through the five senses and the mind.

15.10 Krishna to Arjuna

utkrāmantaṃ sthitaṃ vāpi bhuñjānaṃ vā guṇānvitam | vimūḍhā nānupaśyanti paśyanti jñānacakṣuṣaḥ ||

Whether it is departing, staying, or experiencing, joined with the guṇas, the deluded do not see it; those with the eye of knowledge see.

Meaning today and context

The self is present in every moment, yet we miss it because our attention is pulled outward. Clear seeing is less about new information than about a different way of looking.

Krishna says the deluded cannot see the self as it leaves, stays in, or experiences through the body; only those with the eye of knowledge see it.

15.11 Krishna to Arjuna

yatanto yoginaścainaṃ paśyantyātmanyavasthitam | yatanto'pyakṛtātmāno nainaṃ paśyantyacetasaḥ ||

Striving yogis see it established within themselves; but those who are not inwardly prepared, lacking awareness, do not see it even though they strive.

Meaning today and context

Effort matters, but effort alone is not enough. Spiritual practice bears fruit when it goes with inner work: honesty, restraint, and letting go of pride.

Krishna says the striving yogis see the self within, but those who have not refined themselves fail to see it even when they try.

15.12 Krishna to Arjuna

yadādityagataṃ tejo jagadbhāsayate'khilam | yaccandramasi yaccāgnau tattejo viddhi māmakam ||

The radiance in the sun that lights up the whole world, the radiance in the moon and in fire: know that radiance to be mine.

Meaning today and context

Light and warmth in the world can be seen as signs of the divine. Ordinary things become a reminder of something greater when we look at them this way.

Krishna begins describing his presence in the world: the light of the sun, moon and fire is his.

15.13 Krishna to Arjuna

gāmāviśya ca bhūtāni dhārayāmyahamojasā | puṣṇāmi cauṣadhīḥ sarvāḥ somo bhūtvā rasātmakaḥ ||

Entering the earth, I sustain all beings with my energy; and becoming soma, the essence of sap, I nourish all plants.

Meaning today and context

The ground that holds us and the food that grows from it can be received as gifts. Seeing the sacred in what sustains us breeds gratitude and care for the earth.

Krishna continues: he sustains beings by entering the earth, and nourishes plants as soma.

15.14 Krishna to Arjuna

ahaṃ vaiśvānaro bhūtvā prāṇināṃ dehamāśritaḥ | prāṇāpānasamāyuktaḥ pacāmyannaṃ caturvidham ||

Becoming the fire Vaiśvānara, dwelling in the bodies of living beings, joined with the in-breath and out-breath, I digest the four kinds of food.

This is a spiritual teaching, not medical or dietary advice. For digestive or eating problems, please see a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Even ordinary bodily processes like eating and digesting can be seen as sacred. This is why many people offer their food before eating and eat with gratitude.

Krishna says he is present in living bodies as the digestive fire, Vaiśvānara.

15.15 Krishna to Arjuna

sarvasya cāhaṃ hṛdi saṃniviṣṭo mattaḥ smṛtirjñānamapohanaṃ ca | vedaiśca sarvairahameva vedyo vedāntakṛdvedavideva cāham ||

I am seated in the hearts of all; from me come memory, knowledge and their loss. I alone am to be known through all the Vedas; I am the maker of Vedānta and the knower of the Vedas.

Shankara links the loss of memory to past wrongdoing. Never apply this to dementia, brain injury, learning difficulties or mental illness: forgetting is not a moral failing, and these need medical care and compassion.

Meaning today and context

You are never alone: the divine is not far away but in your own heart. What you remember, understand and even forget arises within that presence, so you can turn inward for guidance.

Krishna says he dwells in the heart of every being and is the source of memory, knowledge and their loss; he is what all the Vedas seek to know.

15.16 Krishna to Arjuna

dvāvimau puruṣau loke kṣaraścākṣara eva ca | kṣaraḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni kūṭastho'kṣara ucyate ||

There are two persons in this world, the perishable and the imperishable. The perishable is all beings; the unchanging one is called the imperishable.

Meaning today and context

Everything we can see and hold changes and passes, yet something underlies the change. Telling the passing from the lasting helps us hold life more lightly.

Krishna begins his teaching on the two 'persons': the perishable and the imperishable.

15.17 Krishna to Arjuna

uttamaḥ puruṣastvanyaḥ paramātmetyudāhṛtaḥ | yo lokatrayamāviśya bibhartyavyaya īśvaraḥ ||

But the highest Person is another, called the Supreme Self, the imperishable Lord who enters the three worlds and sustains them.

Meaning today and context

Beyond both the changing world and its hidden causes, the Gita points to one reality that holds everything together. The whole of life rests in that.

Krishna names the third and highest: the Supreme Self, beyond both the perishable and the imperishable.

15.18 Krishna to Arjuna

yasmātkṣaramatīto'hamakṣarādapi cottamaḥ | ato'smi loke vede ca prathitaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ||

Because I am beyond the perishable and higher even than the imperishable, I am known in the world and in the Veda as Puruṣottama, the Supreme Person.

Meaning today and context

For the devotee, the divine is not just one more thing in the world, nor only its hidden source, but higher than both. That is where trust can finally rest.

Krishna explains why he is called Puruṣottama, the Supreme Person.

15.19 Krishna to Arjuna

yo māmevamasaṃmūḍho jānāti puruṣottamam | sa sarvavidbhajati māṃ sarvabhāvena bhārata ||

Whoever, free from delusion, knows me thus as the Supreme Person, knows all, and worships me with their whole being, Bhārata.

Meaning today and context

Knowing and loving are not opposed. When understanding becomes clear, devotion follows naturally, with the whole of oneself rather than a part.

Krishna says whoever knows him as the Supreme Person, free of delusion, knows everything and worships him with the whole heart.

15.20 Krishna to Arjuna

iti guhyatamaṃ śāstramidamuktaṃ mayānagha | etadbuddhvā buddhimānsyātkṛtakṛtyaśca bhārata ||

Thus this most secret teaching has been told by me, sinless one. Understanding it, one becomes truly wise and has done all that is to be done, Bhārata.

Shankara frames fulfilment in terms of brāhmaṇa birth, reflecting the caste order of his time. The verse itself is addressed to Arjuna and does not limit understanding to any caste; never use this to rank or exclude anyone by birth.

Meaning today and context

There is a kind of understanding that leaves one at peace, without the restless sense that something is still missing. The chapter offers that as its fruit.

Krishna closes the chapter, calling it the most secret teaching; understanding it, one becomes wise and fulfilled.
