Vallī 2 (1.2)

1.2.1 Yama to Nachiketa

anyacchreyo'nyadutaiva preyaste ubhe nānārthe puruṣaṃ sinītaḥ | tayoḥ śreya ādadānasya sādhu bhavati hīyate'rthādya u preyo vṛṇīte ||

The good is one thing, the pleasant quite another; both, with their different aims, bind a person. Of the two, it goes well for one who takes the good; one who chooses the pleasant misses the goal.

Meaning today and context

Every day we choose between what feels good now and what is truly good for us. They often point in different directions, and only one of them leads where we really want to go.

Yama, satisfied with Naciketas' resolve, begins the teaching: there are two paths, the good (śreyas) and the pleasant (preyas).

1.2.2 Yama to Nachiketa

śreyaśca preyaśca manuṣyametastau saṃparītya vivinakti dhīraḥ | śreyo hi dhīro'bhi preyaso vṛṇīte preyo mando yogakṣemādvṛṇīte ||

The good and the pleasant both come to a person. The wise one examines them from every side and tells them apart. The wise one chooses the good over the pleasant; the dull one chooses the pleasant, for getting and keeping.

Meaning today and context

Both choices come to all of us; what differs is whether we stop to examine them. Discernment is the habit of looking past immediate gain and comfort to what is really good.

Yama: both the good and the pleasant come to everyone; the wise examine and tell them apart, choosing the good, while the dull choose the pleasant for gain and security.

1.2.3 Yama to Nachiketa

sa tvaṃ priyānpriyarūpāṃśca kāmānabhidhyāyannaciketo'tyasrākṣīḥ | naitāṃ sṛṅkāṃ vittamayīmavāpto yasyāṃ majjanti bahavo manuṣyāḥ ||

You, Naciketas, having weighed the desires that are dear and look dear, have let them go. You did not take this chain of wealth, in which so many people sink.

Meaning today and context

Wealth can become a chain that drags us under. It takes clear thinking, not just willpower, to see when what we desire is binding us.

Yama praises Naciketas: having weighed all the dear and attractive pleasures offered him, he let them go and did not take the chain of wealth in which many drown.

1.2.4 Yama to Nachiketa

dūramete viparīte viṣūcī avidyā yā ca vidyeti jñātā | vidyābhīpsinaṃ naciketasaṃ manye na tvā kāmā bahavo'lolupanta ||

Far apart and leading opposite ways are these two, what is called ignorance and what is known as knowledge. I take Naciketas to be one who longs for knowledge; the many desires did not tempt you.

Meaning today and context

Knowing and not-knowing about what matters lead to very different lives. A real wish to understand protects us from being pulled by every attraction.

Yama contrasts ignorance (avidyā) and knowledge (vidyā): they are far apart and lead opposite ways; Naciketas is a seeker of knowledge, unmoved by the many desires.

1.2.5 Yama to Nachiketa

avidyāyāmantare vartamānāḥ svayaṃ dhīrāḥ paṇḍitaṃ manyamānāḥ | dandramyamāṇāḥ pariyanti mūḍhā andhenaiva nīyamānā yathāndhāḥ ||

Living in the midst of ignorance, wise in their own eyes and thinking themselves learned, the deluded wander round and round, staggering, like blind men led by one who is himself blind.

This is about our own false certainty and choosing guides wisely; it is not a licence to look down on anyone as ignorant.

Meaning today and context

The most dangerous ignorance is the kind that thinks it already knows. Choosing whom to follow matters: a guide who is blind to their own limits will lead others astray.

Yama describes the self-satisfied ignorant: living in ignorance yet thinking themselves wise and learned, they stumble about like the blind led by the blind.

1.2.6 Yama to Nachiketa

na sāmparāyaḥ pratibhāti bālaṃ pramādyantaṃ vittamohena mūḍham | ayaṃ loko nāsti para iti mānī punaḥ punarvaśamāpadyate me ||

The passing beyond does not dawn on the childish, the careless, the one deluded by the glamour of wealth. 'This world is all, there is no other,' he thinks, and falls again and again into my power.

Meaning today and context

When money and the next thing absorb us completely, we never ask what life is for. Living as if nothing lies beyond the immediate keeps us trapped in the same cycle.

Yama: the careless, deluded by wealth, never see beyond this life; thinking 'only this world exists', they fall again and again into Death's power.

1.2.7 Yama to Nachiketa

śravaṇāyāpi bahubhiryo na labhyaḥ śṛṇvanto'pi bahavo yaṃ na vidyuḥ | āścaryo vaktā kuśalo'sya labdhā āścaryo jñātā kuśalānuśiṣṭaḥ ||

Many do not even get to hear of him; many, though they hear, do not know him. Wonderful is the one who can speak of him, and skilled the one who attains him; wonderful is the one who knows him, taught by one who is skilled.

Meaning today and context

Real understanding of who we are is rare; hearing about it is not the same as knowing it. Finding a capable teacher and truly taking in what they teach are both rare gifts.

Yama on the rarity of this teaching: many never even hear of the Self, many who hear do not understand; the one who speaks of it, the one who attains it, and the one who knows it from a skilled teacher are all wonders.

1.2.8 Yama to Nachiketa

na nareṇāvareṇa prokta eṣa suvijñeyo bahudhā cintyamānaḥ | ananyaprokte gatiratra nāstyaṇīyānhyatarkyamaṇupramāṇāt ||

Taught by an inferior man, he is not easily understood, though thought about in many ways. Unless taught by another, there is no way to him, for he is subtler than the subtlest, beyond the reach of reasoning.

Meaning today and context

Some things cannot be reached by thinking alone; they need someone who knows them to point the way. Who teaches us matters as much as how hard we think.

Yama: taught by an inferior person, the Self is not easily understood, however much it is pondered; without proper teaching there is no way in, for it is subtler than the subtle and beyond argument.

1.2.9 Yama to Nachiketa

naiṣā tarkeṇa matirāpaneyā proktānyenaiva sujñānāya preṣṭha | yāṃ tvamāpaḥ satyadhṛtirbatāsi tvādṛṅno bhūyānnaciketaḥ preṣṭā ||

This insight is not to be gained by argument; taught by another it is easily understood, dearest one. You have gained it, for you are truly steadfast in truth. May we always find a questioner like you, Naciketas.

Meaning today and context

Arguing alone does not bring this kind of understanding; a sincere, truthful mind open to teaching does. Even a teacher longs for a student who really wants to know.

Yama: this understanding cannot be reached by argument but is easily grasped when taught by another; Naciketas has it because he is steadfast in truth, and Yama wishes for more questioners like him.

1.2.10 Yama to Nachiketa

jānāmyahaṃ śevadhirityanityaṃ na hyadhruvaiḥ prāpyate hi dhruvaṃ tat | tato mayā nāciketaścito'gniranityairdravyaiḥ prāptavānasmi nityam ||

I know that what is called treasure is impermanent, for the permanent is not reached by things that do not last. Even so I built the Nāciketa fire, and with impermanent materials I have gained the permanent.

Meaning today and context

Nothing we own lasts, and lasting peace cannot be bought with passing things. Yet passing things, used rightly, can become a means to something more lasting.

Yama speaks of his own path: he knows treasure is impermanent and the permanent cannot be reached by impermanent means, yet he built the Nāciketa fire and with impermanent materials gained the permanent. The verse holds a tension that is read in more than one way.

1.2.11 Yama to Nachiketa

kāmasya āptiṃ jagataḥ pratiṣṭhāṃ kratoranantyamabhayasya pāram | stomamahadurugāyaṃ pratiṣṭhāṃ dṛṣṭvā dhṛtyā dhīro naciketo'tyasrākṣīḥ ||

The fulfilment of desire, the foundation of the world, the endless fruit of ritual, the far shore of fearlessness, great praise and wide renown, a firm footing: having seen all these, Naciketas, wise one, you let them go with resolve.

Meaning today and context

Naciketas saw everything the world prizes, including fame and security, and still put it aside for something deeper. Letting go is real only when we have seen clearly what we are letting go of.

Yama again praises Naciketas: he saw the fulfilment of desire, the foundation of the world, the endless fruit of ritual, the far shore of fearlessness and great renown, and with firm resolve let them all go.

1.2.12 Yama to Nachiketa

taṃ durdarśaṃ gūḍhamanupraviṣṭaṃ guhāhitaṃ gahvareṣṭhaṃ purāṇam | adhyātmayogādhigamena devaṃ matvā dhīro harṣaśokau jahāti ||

That which is hard to see, hidden deep, entered into the secret place, set in the cave of the heart, dwelling in the depths, ancient: the wise one, realising that god through the yoga of the inner self, leaves joy and sorrow behind.

Meaning today and context

What we most truly are is not on the surface; it is found by turning inward. Touching that depth steadies us so that highs and lows no longer throw us about.

Yama describes the Self, hidden deep within, hard to see and ancient; the wise one who realises it through inward discipline leaves joy and sorrow behind.

1.2.13 Yama to Nachiketa

etacchrutvā saṃparigṛhya martyaḥ pravṛhya dharmyamaṇumetamāpya | sa modate modanīyaṃ hi labdhvā vivṛtaṃ sadma naciketasaṃ manye ||

Having heard this and grasped it fully, a mortal who draws out this subtle essence, true to dharma, and reaches it, rejoices, for he has found what is worth rejoicing in. I think the house stands open for Naciketas.

Meaning today and context

Hearing is the start; taking it in and making it our own brings a joy that does not depend on circumstances.

Yama: a mortal who hears this, takes it fully in, draws out this subtle essence that accords with dharma and attains it, rejoices, having found what is truly worth rejoicing in. He sees the door open for Naciketas.

1.2.14 Nachiketa to Yama

anyatra dharmādanyatrādharmādanyatrāsmātkṛtākṛtāt | anyatra bhūtācca bhavyācca yattatpaśyasi tadvada ||

Tell me what you see as other than right and other than wrong, other than what is done and what is not done here, other than what has been and what is yet to be.

Going 'beyond right and wrong' refers to the Self, not to conduct: it never excuses wrongdoing or harming anyone.

Meaning today and context

Beneath our judgements of right and wrong, success and failure, past and future, is there something untouched by all of them? Naciketas asks to know that.

Naciketas (not Yama, though the canonical file marks Yama) asks Yama to name that which he sees beyond right and wrong, beyond what is done and not done, beyond past and future.

1.2.15 Yama to Nachiketa

sarve vedā yatpadamāmananti tapāṃsi sarvāṇi ca yadvadanti | yadicchanto brahmacaryaṃ caranti tatte padaṃ saṃgraheṇa bravīmi | omityetat ||

The word that all the Vedas proclaim, which all austerities speak of, desiring which people live the disciplined life of a student: that word I tell you in brief. It is Om.

Meaning today and context

All the scriptures, all disciplined effort, point to one reality, and Om is its sound and symbol. A simple word can gather the whole of a spiritual life.

Yama answers with the word that all the Vedas proclaim and all austerities point to, for which people live as disciplined students: Om.

1.2.16 Yama to Nachiketa

etaddhyevākṣaraṃ brahma etaddhyevākṣaraṃ param | etaddhyevākṣaraṃ jñātvā yo yadicchati tasya tat ||

This syllable is indeed brahman; this syllable is indeed the highest. Knowing this very syllable, whatever one desires is his.

Meaning today and context

Om stands for the whole of reality; knowing what it points to fulfils every seeking. The promise is about knowing, not about chanting to get things.

Yama continues on Om: this syllable is brahman, the highest; one who knows it gains whatever he desires.

1.2.17 Yama to Nachiketa

etadālambanaṃ śreṣṭhametadālambanaṃ param | etadālambanaṃ jñātvā brahmaloke mahīyate ||

This is the best support; this is the highest support. Knowing this support, one is honoured in the world of brahman.

Meaning today and context

In meditation the mind needs something to rest on; Om is offered as the surest support.

Yama: Om is the best and highest support; one who knows it is honoured in the world of brahman.

1.2.18 Yama to Nachiketa

na jāyate mriyate vā vipaścinnāyaṃ kutaścinna babhūva kaścit | ajo nityaḥ śāśvato'yaṃ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre ||

The knowing Self is not born, nor does it die. It has not come from anywhere, nor has it become anyone. Unborn, eternal, everlasting, ancient, it is not killed when the body is killed.

If you have lost someone, your grief is real and deserves time; this verse does not ask you to stop mourning. It is about the Self, not an invitation to die. If the pain feels too heavy, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

What we are at the deepest level is not ended by death. This does not remove the pain of loss, but it can give a steadier ground from which to face our own death and the death of those we love.

Yama teaches the nature of the Self: it is not born and does not die, came from nowhere and became nothing; it is not killed when the body is killed.

1.2.19 Yama to Nachiketa

hantā cenmanyate hantuṃ hataścenmanyate hatam | ubhau tau na vijānīto nāyaṃ hanti na hanyate ||

If the killer thinks he kills, and if the slain thinks he is slain, neither of them understands: this one does not kill, and is not killed.

This verse is about the Self, never a justification for violence or harming anyone; harming the body is a real wrong with real consequences. If you are thinking about death, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The Self is untouched by what happens to the body. For someone facing death or fearing for a loved one, this can be a source of calm about what is deepest in us.

Yama: one who thinks he kills and one who thinks he is killed both misunderstand; the Self neither kills nor is killed.

1.2.20 Yama to Nachiketa

aṇoraṇīyānmahato mahīyānātmāsya jantornihito guhāyām | tamakratuḥ paśyati vītaśoko dhātuprasādānmahimānamātmanaḥ ||

Subtler than the subtlest, greater than the greatest, the Self is set in the heart of every creature. One free of willing, beyond sorrow, sees the greatness of the Self through the clarity of the mind and senses.

Meaning today and context

What we truly are is both the smallest and the vastest thing, present in every living being. It is seen not by grasping but when the mind settles and wanting quietens.

Yama: the Self, subtler than the subtle and greater than the great, lies hidden in the heart of every being; one free of willing and sorrow sees its greatness through the clarity of mind and senses.

1.2.21 Yama to Nachiketa

āsīno dūraṃ vrajati śayāno yāti sarvataḥ | kastaṃ madāmadaṃ devaṃ madanyo jñātumarhati ||

Sitting still, he travels far; lying down, he goes everywhere. Who but I can know that god, who both rejoices and does not rejoice?

Meaning today and context

The Self cannot be pinned down by ordinary opposites like moving and still. It points us beyond the habit of seeing everything in either-or terms.

Yama describes the paradoxical Self: still yet travelling far, at rest yet everywhere, both rejoicing and not; who but Yama can know such a god?

1.2.22 Yama to Nachiketa

aśarīraṃ śarīreṣu anavastheṣvavasthitam | mahāntaṃ vibhumātmānaṃ matvā dhīro na śocati ||

Bodiless within bodies, steady among things that never stand still: knowing the Self as great and all-pervading, the wise one does not grieve.

If you have lost someone, your grief is real and deserves time; this verse does not ask you to stop mourning. It is about the Self, not an invitation to die. If the pain feels too heavy, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Bodies and circumstances keep changing; something in us does not. Knowing this does not make us cold, but it gives a ground that sorrow cannot wash away.

Yama: knowing the Self as bodiless within bodies, steady among things that never stay, great and all-pervading, the wise one does not grieve.

1.2.23 Yama to Nachiketa

nāyamātmā pravacanena labhyo na medhayā na bahunā śrutena | yamevaiṣa vṛṇute tena labhyastasyaiṣa ātmā vivṛṇute tanūṃ svām ||

This Self is not to be gained by teaching, nor by intellect, nor by much learning. It is gained only by the one whom it chooses; to that one this Self reveals its own form.

Meaning today and context

Lectures, cleverness and reading many books are not enough to know who we really are. It comes as an opening, almost a grace, to one who wholeheartedly wants it.

Yama: the Self is not gained by discourse, intellect or much learning; it is gained by the one it chooses, and to that one it reveals its own form. (The line can also be read: gained by the one who chooses it.)

1.2.24 Yama to Nachiketa

nāvirato duścaritānnāśānto nāsamāhitaḥ | nāśāntamānaso vāpi prajñānenainamāpnuyāt ||

Not one who has not turned away from wrong conduct, not one who is not calm, not one who is not collected, nor one whose mind is not at peace, can reach him by insight.

Meaning today and context

Understanding grows from how we live: honest conduct, a calm mind and steady attention come first. Cleverness without these does not reach far.

Yama on who cannot reach the Self: one who has not given up wrong conduct, who is not calm, not collected, whose mind is not at peace cannot reach it by insight.

1.2.25 Yama to Nachiketa

yasya brahma ca kṣatraṃ ca ubhe bhavata odanaḥ | mṛtyuryasyopasecanaṃ ka itthā veda yatra saḥ ||

For whom the priestly class and the ruling class are both just rice, and death is the sauce poured over it: who truly knows where he is?

Brāhmaṇa and kṣatriya here name the priestly and ruling powers of the time to show that even the highest are as nothing; worth lies in conduct, never in birth.

Meaning today and context

All the power and status of the world, and even death, are small before the Self. No position we hold puts us above that truth.

Yama closes the vallī: the Self is that for which priests and rulers alike are mere food, and death itself the sauce; who can truly say where it is?
