The story begins with a father doing a great religious act for what he will get from it. The question of motive behind giving runs through what follows.
The narrator opens the story: the sage Vājaśravasa performs a sacrifice in which he gives away all he owns, hoping for its reward.

Conviction can awaken in a young person who sees clearly what adults have stopped noticing. Naciketas' faith shows first as honest questioning, not blind acceptance.

The narrator: while the cows given as sacrificial fees are being led away, the boy Naciketas, watching, is filled with śraddhā, a serious faith and conviction, and begins to reflect.

Giving away what is useless to us, for show or for merit, is not real giving. A gift counts by what it costs us and what it gives the other.

Naciketas reflects on the cows his father is giving away: old, dry and barren. Giving such gifts, he thinks, earns no blessing.
He said to his father, 'Father, to whom will you give me?' He asked a second time, and a third. His father said to him, 'To Death I give you!'

Having come near the unageing and the immortal, what ageing mortal down here, who understands, would delight in an overlong life, dwelling on the pleasures of beauty and love?

Once we glimpse something lasting, a longer life of the same pleasures loses its pull. The question is not how long we live but what we live for.
Naciketas asks: having met the ageless and the immortal, what ageing mortal who understands would delight in a very long life spent dwelling on beauty and pleasure?
That about which people doubt, O Death, what there is in the great passing-on, tell us that. This boon that enters into what is hidden: Naciketas chooses none other than this.

Steadiness in what we truly want, after every distraction has been offered, is what makes real learning possible.
Naciketas closes the bargaining: tell us what lies in the great passing-on that people doubt about; Naciketas chooses no boon but this one, which reaches into what is hidden. The last line refers to himself in the third person.
