12.275.1 Yudhishthira to Bhishma

śokādduḥkhācca mṛtyośca trasyanti prāṇinaḥ sadā | ubhayaṃ me yathā na syāttanme brūhi pitāmaha ||

Living beings are always afraid of grief, of suffering and of death. Tell me, grandfather, how neither of these may come to me.

A question about escaping grief and death. For anyone grieving or thinking of death, reach out: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The fear of loss and of death is shared by everyone. Asking honestly how to live with it is where this teaching begins.

Mahabharata 12.275.1. Yudhishthira asks Bhishma how one can be free of both grief and death, which all living beings dread.

12.275.2 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

atraivodāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | nāradasya ca saṃvādaṃ samaṅgasya ca bhārata ||

On this they cite an ancient account, Bharata: the conversation between Narada and Samanga.

Meaning today and context

The answer comes as a story of a real-seeming person who has found calm, rather than as abstract rules.

Mahabharata 12.275.2. Bhishma answers by introducing an old story: a conversation between the sage Narada and Samanga, a man who lives without grief.

12.275.3 Narada to Samanga

uraseva praṇamase bāhubhyāṃ tarasīva ca | saṃprahṛṣṭamanā nityaṃ viśoka iva lakṣyase ||

You move about as though bowing with your chest and swimming with your arms; you are always delighted at heart, and you seem to be free of grief.

Meaning today and context

Some people carry an easy lightness that others notice at once. The story asks where such lightness comes from.

Mahabharata 12.275.3. Inside the story, Narada speaks to Samanga, marvelling at how carefree and cheerful he is.

12.275.4 Narada to Samanga

udvegaṃ neha te kiṃ citsusūkṣmamapi lakṣaye | nityatṛpta iva svastho bālavacca viceṣṭase ||

I do not see in you even the slightest agitation. You seem always content, at ease in yourself, and you go about like a child.

Meaning today and context

Being 'like a child' here means unworried and present, not careless. It is the quality the rest of the chapter explains.

Mahabharata 12.275.4. Narada continues to Samanga: he sees no trace of anxiety in him.

12.275.5 Samanga to Narada

Past, present and future all rest in living beings, giver of honour. I know their true nature; that is why I am not downcast.

Meaning today and context

Much of our low mood comes from not understanding how life moves: things come, change and pass. Seeing that clearly steadies the mind.

Mahabharata 12.275.5. Samanga replies to Narada: he is not downcast because he understands how things truly are.

12.275.6 Samanga to Narada

I know how undertakings begin, and again how their fruits arise; the fruits in this world are of many kinds. That is why I am not downcast.

Meaning today and context

Results come in many shapes, not always the one we planned. Knowing this in advance keeps a setback from breaking us.

Mahabharata 12.275.6. Samanga continues: he knows that efforts and their results follow their own course.

12.275.7 Samanga to Narada

agādhāścāpratiṣṭhāśca gatimantaśca nārada | andhā jaḍāśca jīvanti paśyāsmānapi jīvataḥ ||

The deep and the rootless, the purposeful, the blind and the dull, all go on living, Narada. See, we too are living.

Meaning today and context

Life carries on for everyone, gifted or limited, settled or not. There is no need to panic about one's own lot.

Mahabharata 12.275.7. Samanga points out that all kinds of people go on living, whatever their condition.

12.275.8 Samanga to Narada

vihitenaiva jīvanti arogāṅgā divaukasaḥ | balavanto'balāścaiva tadvadasmānsabhājaya ||

The gods, whose bodies know no disease, live only by what is ordained; so do the strong and the weak. Regard us in the same way.

Accepting what is ordained is not fatalism: elsewhere this text urges effort where a remedy exists.

Meaning today and context

No one, however powerful, controls everything about their life. Accepting that we live within a larger order can ease the pressure to control it all.

Mahabharata 12.275.8. Samanga continues: gods and humans, strong and weak, all live by what has been ordained for them.

12.275.9 Samanga to Narada

sahasriṇaśca jīvanti jīvanti śatinastathā | śākena cānye jīvanti paśyāsmānapi jīvataḥ ||

Those who own thousands live, and those who own hundreds live too; others live on vegetables. See, we too are living.

Contentment is not a reason to ignore real hardship or to deny anyone fair pay or help.

Meaning today and context

People live full lives on very different incomes. Comparing what we have with others' wealth steals a peace that is already available.

Mahabharata 12.275.9. Samanga: rich and poor alike go on living.

12.275.10 Samanga to Narada

yadā na śocemahi kiṃ nu na syāddharmeṇa vā nārada karmaṇā vā | kṛtāntavaśyāni yadā sukhāni duḥkhāni vā yanna vidharṣayanti ||

If we do not grieve, what would be lost to us, Narada, whether in dharma or in action? Since joys and sorrows are under the sway of what is destined, they do not crush us.

Not a dismissal of mourning: grief after a loss is natural and needs time and support. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Grieving over what we cannot change adds nothing to our goodness or our work. Seeing joys and sorrows as passing events keeps them from overpowering us.

Mahabharata 12.275.10. Samanga explains why he does not grieve: joys and sorrows follow the ordering of fate and cannot overwhelm him.

12.275.11 Samanga to Narada

yasmai prajñāṃ kathayante manuṣyāḥ prajñāmūlo hīndriyāṇāṃ prasādaḥ | muhyanti śocanti yadendriyāṇi prajñālābho nāsti mūḍhendriyasya ||

Wisdom is what people speak of for this reason: the clearness of the senses has wisdom as its root. When the senses are confused, people are deluded and grieve; one whose senses are confused gains no wisdom.

Meaning today and context

When we are pulled about by what we see, hear and want, we think poorly and suffer more. Clear seeing and a settled mind feed each other.

Mahabharata 12.275.11. Samanga: the calm of the senses is rooted in wisdom; confused senses bring grief.

12.275.12 Samanga to Narada

mūḍhasya darpaḥ sa punarmoha eva mūḍhasya nāyaṃ na paro'sti lokaḥ | na hyeva duḥkhāni sadā bhavanti sukhasya vā nityaśo lābha eva ||

The fool's pride is itself only delusion again; for the fool there is neither this world nor the next. Sorrows do not last forever, nor does one always gain happiness.

'Fool' here means one ruled by delusion, not a licence to look down on anyone.

Meaning today and context

Hard times pass, and good times pass too. Remembering both keeps us from despair in one and arrogance in the other.

Mahabharata 12.275.12. Samanga: the fool's pride is only more delusion; neither sorrow nor joy lasts forever.

12.275.13 Samanga to Narada

bhāvātmakaṃ saṃparivartamānaṃ na mādṛśaḥ saṃjvaraṃ jātu kuryāt | iṣṭānbhogānnānurudhyetsukhaṃ vā na cintayedduḥkhamabhyāgataṃ vā ||

Seeing that everything that exists keeps turning round, one like me would never make himself feverish. He would not cling to the pleasures he likes, or to happiness, nor brood over sorrow when it comes.

Meaning today and context

Life is a wheel: good and bad phases keep turning. We can enjoy what comes without clutching it, and face pain without replaying it endlessly.

Mahabharata 12.275.13. Samanga: seeing that all existence keeps turning, a person like him does not burn with worry, cling to pleasures or brood on sorrow.

12.275.14 Samanga to Narada

samāhito na spṛhayetpareṣāṃ nānāgataṃ nābhinandeta lābham | na cāpi hṛṣyedvipule'rthalābhe tathārthanāśe ca na vai viṣīdet ||

Composed, one should not covet what belongs to others, nor delight in a gain that has not yet come. One should not exult at a great gain of wealth, nor sink into despair at the loss of wealth.

About inner steadiness, not financial advice. For serious debt or money distress, seek practical help and, if needed, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Don't count money before it arrives, don't envy others' things, and don't let a windfall or a loss swing you to extremes. Steadiness with money is a kind of freedom.

Mahabharata 12.275.14. Samanga describes the composed person's attitude to gain, loss and others' possessions.

12.275.15 Samanga to Narada

na bāndhavā na ca vittaṃ na kaulī na ca śrutaṃ na ca mantrā na vīryam | duḥkhāttrātuṃ sarva evotsahante paratra śīle na tu yānti śāntim ||

Not kinsmen, nor wealth, nor noble family, nor learning, nor sacred formulas, nor strength: none of these is able to save one from sorrow. It is through character that people find peace in the world beyond.

Meaning today and context

Family, money, status and skill help in many ways, but none of them can shield us from sorrow. What steadies us in the end is the kind of person we have become.

Mahabharata 12.275.15. Samanga: nothing external can rescue a person from sorrow; peace comes through character.

12.275.16 Samanga to Narada

nāsti buddhirayuktasya nāyogādvidyate sukham | dhṛtiśca duḥkhatyāgaścāpyubhayaṃ naḥ sukhodayam ||

The undisciplined have no understanding; without yoga there is no happiness. Steadiness and the giving up of sorrow: these two together are the source of our happiness.

Meaning today and context

Happiness is not luck alone; it grows from a steady mind and a willingness to stop holding on to pain. Both can be practised.

Mahabharata 12.275.16. Samanga: without inner discipline there is neither understanding nor happiness; steadiness and letting go of sorrow bring happiness.

12.275.17 Samanga to Narada

priyaṃ hi harṣajananaṃ harṣa utsekavardhanaḥ | utseko narakāyaiva tasmāttaṃ saṃtyajāmyaham ||

What is pleasant gives rise to elation; elation swells into arrogance; arrogance leads only to hell. Therefore I give it up.

Meaning today and context

Success and praise feel good, but the thrill easily becomes a puffed-up ego that harms us and others. Enjoy good things, and watch for the swelling that follows.

Mahabharata 12.275.17. Samanga: the chain from pleasure to elation to arrogance leads to ruin, so he gives it up.

12.275.18 Samanga to Narada

etāñśokabhayotsekānmohanānsukhaduḥkhayoḥ | paśyāmi sākṣivalloke dehasyāsya viceṣṭanāt ||

These griefs, fears and conceits, which delude us in joy and in sorrow, I watch in the world like a witness, as they arise from the stirrings of this body.

Meaning today and context

We can learn to notice fear or pride rising, as an observer, instead of being swept away by it. That small distance gives room to choose.

Mahabharata 12.275.18. Samanga: he watches grief, fear and conceit, which delude a person in joy and sorrow, as a witness watches the body's movements.

12.275.19 Samanga to Narada

arthakāmau parityajya viśoko vigatajvaraḥ | tṛṣṇāmohau tu saṃtyajya carāmi pṛthivīmimām ||

Having given up wealth and desire, free of grief and free of fever, and having cast off thirst and delusion, I wander this earth.

A renunciate's way of life; not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

The lightness Narada noticed comes from not being driven by thirst for more. For most of us this means loosening craving, not giving up our work or home.

Mahabharata 12.275.19. Samanga: having let go of wealth, desire, thirst and delusion, he wanders the earth free of grief.

12.275.20 Samanga to Narada

na mṛtyuto na cādharmānna lobhānna kutaścana | pītāmṛtasyevātyantamiha cāmutra vā bhayam ||

Neither from death, nor from wrongdoing, nor from greed, nor from anything at all, do I have fear, here or in the next world, like one who has drunk the nectar of immortality.

Fearlessness about death is not an invitation to die. If you are thinking of death or self-harm, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When we stop clinging and live cleanly, fear loses much of its grip, even the fear of death.

Mahabharata 12.275.20. Samanga: like one who has drunk nectar, he has no fear of anything, here or hereafter.

12.275.21 Samanga to Narada

etadbrahmanvijānāmi mahatkṛtvā tapo'vyayam | tena nārada saṃprāpto na māṃ śokaḥ prabādhate ||

This I know, brahmin, having practised great and unfailing austerity. Because of that, Narada, grief does not trouble me when it comes.

Austerity here means sustained discipline, not punishing the body or fasting; not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Samanga's calm was not a gift of temperament; it was earned through long discipline. Inner steadiness is built, not found ready-made.

Mahabharata 12.275.21. Samanga ends: he gained this knowledge through long, unfailing austerity, and so grief does not trouble him.
