The deepest love, for God or anything sacred, cannot be fully put into words. If you feel it but cannot explain it, that is not a failing; it is the nature of such love.
Narada begins the section on love beyond words: the nature of divine love cannot be described.
Such love is rare, but it is real: now and then it shows in a person ready to receive it. Becoming that kind of vessel, open and humble, is in our hands.
Narada says this love, though indescribable, does show itself, in a fit recipient. Our print has the passive prakāśyate ('is revealed'); the common text has prakāśate ('shines forth'), with little change in sense.
[It is] without qualities, without desire, growing every moment, unbroken, subtler [than the subtle], of the nature of experience.

Real love does not ask for anything in return and does not fade with time; it keeps quietly deepening. It is known by living it, not by reading about it.
Narada describes the marks of this love: free of qualities and desires, growing every moment, unbroken, very subtle, a matter of direct experience.
Having gained it, one sees only that, hears only that, thinks only of that.
Meaning today and context
When love fills a person, it colours everything they see and hear. In small ways we know this from loving people; devotion is that absorption turned towards God.
Narada says one who has gained this love sees, hears and thinks of that alone. The common text adds 'speaks of that alone' (tad eva bhāṣayati), which our print lacks.
Secondary [devotion] is threefold, by the difference of guṇas, or by the difference of the distressed and the others.
Meaning today and context
People turn to God for different reasons: in trouble, out of curiosity, or wanting something. None of these is wrong; they are beginnings, and each can grow into deeper love.
Having described supreme love, Narada turns to secondary (gauṇī) devotion, which is of three kinds, by the three guṇas or by the kind of seeker (the distressed and others, as in Gita 7.16).
Meaning today and context
Devotion matures. Whatever brings us to God first, the aim is to move towards love that asks less and gives more.
Narada ranks the kinds of secondary devotion in 56: each earlier one is better than the one after it. Which way the order runs is read differently; our translation follows the words.
lokahānau cintā na kāryyā niveditātmalokavedatvāt ||
One should not worry over loss in the world, since one has offered oneself, the world and the Veda [to God].
Surrender is not advice to neglect work, health, money or medical treatment; take practical steps and seek help, and let go of the worry, not the responsibility. For overwhelming distress, Tele-MANAS 14416.

When we have truly put our life in God's hands, setbacks still hurt, but they need not consume us with worry. Do what you can, then let the rest go.
Narada says a devotee need not worry over worldly loss, having offered self, world and scripture to God.
na tatsiddhau lokavyavahāro heyaḥ kintu phalatyāgastatsādhanañca kāryameva ||
[Even] when it is attained, worldly conduct is not to be abandoned; rather, giving up the fruits, and its practice, must certainly be done.

Devotion does not mean walking away from your job, family or social duties. Keep doing them; change the inner attitude by letting go of attachment to results, and keep up your practice.
Narada qualifies 61: worldly life is not to be abandoned; what must be given up is the fruit, and the practice of devotion must go on. The opening phrase (na tat-siddhau) is read either 'even once it is attained' or 'until it is attained'; our print adds 'must certainly be done' (kāryam eva) at the end.
Talk about women, wealth and unbelievers is not to be listened to.
This reflects the renunciate view of its time, addressed to a male seeker, and is about one's own craving. It is not the app's view and must never be used to demean or control women, or to despise people who do not believe.

Read today, the point is to avoid gossip and talk that feeds lust, greed or cynicism, not to look down on any group of people.
Narada lists talk a devotee should not listen to: about women, wealth and atheists, in the renunciate idiom of his time.
Having offered all one's conduct to Him, one should direct desire, anger, pride and the rest towards Him alone.
Turning anger towards God is about one's inner life; it is never a reason to harm oneself or others. For anger that is hard to control, seek help.

Strong feelings need not be crushed; they can be turned. Long for God, be angry with God, take pride in belonging to God; bringing everything to Him is itself devotion.
Narada says that once all one's conduct is offered to God, even desire, anger and pride should be directed towards Him alone.

Breaking through the threefold form, love should be practised, in the form of constant service and constant love as of a beloved: love alone should be practised.
Love 'as of a beloved' describes intensity of love for God, not a model for human relationships.

Love for God can take the shape of serving and of loving as one loves a dearest one. What matters is that it is constant and whole-hearted; love is the practice itself.
Narada says love should be practised as eternal service and eternal love as for a beloved, after breaking the threefold division. 'Trirūpa-bhaṅga' is read variously (the three guṇas, or the triad of lover, beloved and loving).
Among them there is no distinction of caste, learning, beauty, family, wealth, occupation and the like.

Instead of argument, Narada advises reflecting on the scriptures of devotion and doing what awakens it. Our print reads tad-bodha ('that awakens knowledge of it'); the common text tad-udbodha ('that awakens it'), with the same sense.

Of all the ways to approach what is truest and lasting, love is the surest. If you are confused by many paths, start with love.
Narada declares devotion the greatest. 'Trisatyasya' is read as 'for the One true in all three times' or as a threefold affirmation; the repetition marks emphasis.
Though one, it becomes elevenfold: attachment to [His] qualities and greatness, to [His] form, to worship, to remembrance, to service, to friendship, to parental love, to love as for a beloved, to self-offering, to absorption, and to the supreme [pain of] separation.
Love 'as for a beloved' and 'pain of separation' describe devotion to God, not a model for human relationships.
