Verses 1–50

1.1 Narada

athāto bhaktiṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ ||

Now, therefore, we shall explain devotion.

Meaning today and context

The whole text begins by naming one subject: love for God. It invites the reader to look at devotion carefully, not only to feel it.

The opening sūtra of the Narada Bhakti Sutras: Narada announces his subject, devotion (bhakti).

1.2 Narada

sā tvasminparamapremarūpā ||

It is of the nature of supreme love towards Him.

Meaning today and context

Devotion is not first of all rituals or beliefs; it is love, the deepest love a person can have, turned towards God.

Narada's definition of devotion. Our 1917 print reads parama-prema ('supreme love'); the common modern text has para-prema ('highest love'), with the same sense.

1.3 Narada

amṛtasvarūpā ca ||

And it is of the nature of nectar (immortality).

Meaning today and context

Love for God is described as something that nourishes rather than drains; it is its own sweetness and does not fade the way passing pleasures do.

Narada continues the definition: devotion is also of the nature of nectar, deathless and sweet in itself.

1.4 Narada

yallabdhvā pumānsiddho bhavatyamṛto bhavati tṛpto bhavati ||

Gaining which a person becomes perfected, becomes immortal, becomes satisfied.

Meaning today and context

Many of us chase one thing after another and stay hungry. The sūtra says real love for God gives a fullness that nothing else gives.

Narada describes the fruit of gaining devotion: fulfilment, deathlessness and contentment.

1.5 Narada

yatprāpya na kiñcidvāñchati na śocati na dveṣṭi na ramate notsāhī bhavati ||

Attaining which one desires nothing [else], does not grieve, does not hate, does not delight [in other things], and is not eager [for them].

This describes the settled state of a devotee; it does not mean that someone who is grieving or hurting has failed at devotion. Grief is natural and deserves care; if sorrow becomes overwhelming, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When the heart is full, the constant pull of wanting, resenting and getting excited about the next thing loosens. It is a picture of inner steadiness, not of becoming cold.

Narada describes the devotee who has attained devotion: free of craving, sorrow, hatred and restless excitement for other things.

1.6 Narada

yajjñātvā matto bhavati stabdho bhavatyātmārāmo bhavati ||

Knowing which one becomes intoxicated [with love], becomes still, becomes one who delights in the Self.

Meaning today and context

Deep love can make a person quiet and wholly absorbed, needing nothing outside to be happy. The 'intoxication' here is love, not any substance.

Narada describes the inner state of one who has known devotion: absorbed, still, and delighting in the Self.

1.7 Narada

sā na kāmayamānā nirodharūpatvāt ||

It is not [a matter of] desiring, because it is of the nature of nirodha (dedication).

Meaning today and context

Real devotion is not a bargain for things we want. Praying is fine, but love that only asks is not yet the love this text means.

Narada says devotion is not a form of desire, because it is of the nature of nirodha (dedication or stilling, defined in the next sūtra).

1.8 Narada

nirodhastu lokavedavyāpārasya nyāsaḥ ||

Nirodha is the consecration (laying down) of worldly and Vedic activity [to Him].

This is about inner dedication of one's activity to God, not advice to abandon family, work, duties or medical care; sūtra 14 itself says eating and the needs of the body go on.

Meaning today and context

Devotion means offering all one's activity, everyday and religious, to God, so that nothing is done only for oneself.

Narada defines nirodha. Our print reads loka-veda-vyāpārasya nyāsaḥ (two words); the common text joins them, with the same sense.

1.9 Narada

tasminnananyatā tadvirodhiṣūdāsīnatā ca ||

[It is] single-mindedness towards Him, and indifference to what is opposed to Him.

Meaning today and context

Devotion grows by giving the heart to one centre and by not feeding what pulls against it, without fighting or hating it.

Narada explains nirodha further: single-minded turning to God and indifference to what opposes devotion.

1.10 Narada

anyāśrayāṇāṃ tyāgo'nanyatā ||

Single-mindedness is the giving up of other supports.

Meaning today and context

To rely wholly on God means not secretly leaning on other things for one's deepest security. It speaks of inner trust; it does not mean refusing help from people or doctors.

Narada defines ananyatā (single-mindedness).

1.11 Narada

lokavedeṣu tadanukūlācaraṇaṃ tadvirodhiṣūdāsīnatā ||

Indifference to what is opposed to it is doing, in worldly and Vedic matters, what is favourable to it.

Meaning today and context

Avoiding what harms our devotion is mostly done positively: in daily life and in religious practice, choose what helps love grow.

Narada defines indifference to what opposes devotion.

1.12 Narada

bhavatu niścayadārḍhyādūrddhvaṃ śāstrarakṣaṇam ||

Even after firmness of conviction, let the scriptures be kept (observed).

Meaning today and context

Feeling sure of one's faith is not a reason to drop the disciplines that built it. Steady practice keeps us honest.

Narada warns that scriptural discipline should still be kept even after one's conviction has become firm.

1.13 Narada

anyathā pātityaśaṅkayā ||

Otherwise there is the danger of falling.

Meaning today and context

Overconfidence on the spiritual path is risky; without discipline, good resolve slowly slips.

Narada gives the reason for sūtra 12: otherwise one may fall.

1.14 Narada

loko'pi tāvadeva bhojanādivyāpārastvāśarīradhāraṇāvadhi ||

Worldly [conduct] too [should be kept] to that extent; activities such as eating [continue] as long as the body is held.

Meaning today and context

Devotion does not ask us to neglect the body or ordinary life. Eating, rest and the business of living go on, and should.

Narada says worldly conduct too is kept in the same measure, and activities like eating continue as long as the body lasts.

1.15 Narada

tallakṣaṇāni vācyante nānāmatabhedāt ||

Its characteristics are now stated, according to the differences of various views.

Meaning today and context

Different traditions describe devotion differently. The text begins by listening to them before giving its own view.

Narada introduces the signs of devotion, noting that teachers differ.

1.16 Narada

pūjādiṣvanurāga iti pārāśaryyaḥ ||

Fondness for worship and the like, says Pārāśarya.

Meaning today and context

For some, love shows itself in worship: lighting a lamp, offering flowers, caring for the sacred with their hands.

The view of Pārāśarya (Vyāsa, son of Parāśara) on the sign of devotion.

1.17 Narada

kathādiṣviti gargaḥ ||

[Fondness] for stories [of God] and the like, says Garga.

Meaning today and context

For others, love shows itself in delight at hearing and telling the stories of God.

The view of the sage Garga on the sign of devotion.

1.18 Narada

ātmaratyavirodheneti śāṇḍilyaḥ ||

[Fondness for these] without conflict with delight in the Self, says Śāṇḍilya.

Meaning today and context

Outer devotion should not pull against inner joy; true worship and inner stillness belong together.

The view of the sage Śāṇḍilya on the sign of devotion.

1.19 Narada

nāradastu tadarpitākhilācāratā tadvismaraṇe paramavyākulateti ||

But Narada [says]: offering all one's conduct to Him, and supreme anguish in forgetting Him.

Meaning today and context

Love for God shows in two ways: everything we do becomes an offering, and forgetting Him hurts, the way being parted from someone dear hurts.

Narada gives his own definition of the sign of devotion.

1.20 Narada

astyevamevam ||

It is so; it is so.

Meaning today and context

This kind of love is not just an ideal on paper; people have lived it.

Narada affirms that such devotion actually exists, and that there are examples.

1.21 Narada

yathā vrajagopikānām ||

As of the gopīs of Vraja.

The gopīs' love is the text's image for the intensity of love for God. It is not a model for human relationships and does not endorse secret or extramarital affairs.

Meaning today and context

The gopīs are the classic picture of love for God that fills every moment and every task.

Narada names his example of supreme devotion: the gopīs (cowherd women) of Vraja and their love for Krishna.

1.22 Narada

tatrāpi na māhātmyajñānavismṛtyapavādaḥ ||

Even there, there is no fault of forgetting the knowledge of [His] greatness.

The gopīs' love is the text's image for the intensity of love for God. It is not a model for human relationships and does not endorse secret or extramarital affairs.

Meaning today and context

Intense love for God is not mere emotion; it goes together with knowing whom one loves.

Narada answers an objection: the gopīs' love was not blind; they did not forget Krishna's divine greatness.

1.23 Narada

tadvihīnaṃ jārāṇāmiva ||

Without that [knowledge], it would be like [the love] of paramours.

The gopīs' love is the text's image for the intensity of love for God. It is not a model for human relationships and does not endorse secret or extramarital affairs.

Meaning today and context

Love that is only passion, without reverence or understanding, is self-seeking. Devotion keeps both feeling and awe.

Narada explains why that knowledge matters: love without awareness of His greatness would be like the passion of illicit lovers.

1.24 Narada

nāstyeva tasmiṃstatsukhasukhitvam ||

In that [love of paramours] there is no being happy in His happiness at all.

This is about love for God. In human relationships, caring about another's happiness never means ignoring your own safety or staying in abuse; for help, call the women's helpline 181 or 112.

Meaning today and context

The test of true love is whether we are happy in the other's happiness or only in our own. Devotion lives for the Beloved's joy.

Narada names the flaw of selfish passion: it does not find its happiness in the beloved's happiness.

1.25 Narada

sā tu karmmajñānayogebhyopyadhikatarā ||

But it is even greater than action, knowledge and yoga.

Meaning today and context

For Narada, love is the crown of the spiritual life; good works, learning and discipline find their meaning in it.

Narada begins comparing devotion with the other paths: action (karma), knowledge (jñāna) and yoga.

1.26 Narada

phalarūpatvāt ||

Because it is of the nature of the fruit.

Meaning today and context

Devotion is not only a means to some further goal; loving God is already the goal.

First reason why devotion is greater: it is itself the fruit that the other paths aim at.

1.27 Narada

īśvarasyāpyabhimānidveṣitvāddainyapriyatvācca ||

Because even the Lord dislikes the proud and loves humility.

Meaning today and context

Achievement in work, knowledge or discipline can feed the ego. Love keeps one humble, and humility is what draws grace.

Second reason: God dislikes the proud and loves humility. Our print reads abhimāni-dveṣitvāt ('dislike of the proud'); the common text has abhimāna- ('dislike of pride').

1.28 Narada

tasyā jñānameva sādhanamityeke ||

Some say knowledge alone is its means.

Meaning today and context

Some hold that you must first understand God before you can love Him.

Narada reports the first of several views on the means of devotion.

1.29 Narada

anyonyāśrayatvamityanye ||

Others say [knowledge and devotion] depend on each other.

Meaning today and context

Knowing and loving can grow together: the more we understand, the more we love, and the more we love, the more we understand.

A second view on the means of devotion. Our print repeats 'ityeke' from sūtra 28 but its own translation says 'others'; we follow the standard reading 'ityanye'.

1.30 Narada

svayaṃ phalarūpateti brahmakumāraḥ ||

It is itself its own fruit, says Brahmakumāra.

Meaning today and context

Love does not need anything outside itself to justify it. Loving God is reward enough.

The view of Brahmakumāra (a son of Brahmā; Narada is himself one), which the text adopts: devotion is its own fruit.

1.31 Narada

rājagṛhabhojanādiṣu tathaiva dṛṣṭatvāt ||

For this is seen in the case of a palace, a meal and so on.

Meaning today and context

Knowing about a palace does not make it yours; knowing about food does not feed you. Experience is different from information.

Narada gives examples to show that knowing about something is not the same as having it.

1.32 Narada

na tena rājaparitoṣaḥ kṣucchāntirvā ||

By that [mere knowing] there is no contentment of a king, nor appeasing of hunger.

Meaning today and context

Learning about God from books, however correct, does not by itself give the joy of loving Him.

Narada completes the example. Our print has rāja-paritoṣaḥ as one compound ('the satisfaction of a king'); the common text separates rājā paritoṣaḥ, read as 'one does not become a king, nor is satisfied'.

1.33 Narada

tasmātsaiva grāhyā mumukṣubhiḥ ||

Therefore that alone should be taken up by those who seek liberation.

Meaning today and context

If you are seeking freedom and peace, start by loving; love is the path and the destination.

Narada's conclusion to the comparison: those who seek liberation should take up devotion.

1.34 Narada

tasyāḥ sādhanāni gāyantyācāryyāḥ ||

The teachers sing of its means.

Meaning today and context

Love for God can be cultivated; those who walked the path have described how.

Narada introduces the means of attaining devotion, as taught by the masters. Our print lacks the opening word 'bhakti-sādhanāni' found in some texts; the sense is the same.

1.35 Narada

tattu viṣayatyāgātsaṅgatyāgācca ||

That [devotion comes] through giving up sense-objects and giving up attachment.

Giving up sense-objects means inner non-attachment, not fasting, self-denial of basic needs, or leaving family and work.

Meaning today and context

Love for God grows when the heart is not cluttered with cravings and clinging. Loosening our grip makes room.

The first means of devotion: giving up sense-objects and attachment.

1.36 Narada

avyāvṛttabhajanāt ||

Through uninterrupted worship.

Meaning today and context

Devotion is kept alive by steady, unbroken practice, a little every day rather than occasional bursts.

The second means: unbroken worship.

1.37 Narada

loke'pi bhagavadguṇaśravaṇakīrttanāt ||

Even in [ordinary] worldly life, through hearing and singing the qualities of the Lord.

Meaning today and context

You do not need to leave the world to grow in love; listening to and singing of God in daily life is itself the practice.

The third means: hearing and singing of God's qualities, even in the midst of ordinary life.

1.38 Narada

mukhyatastu mahatkṛpayaiva bhagavadkṛpāleśādvā ||

But chiefly, through the grace of great souls alone, or through a trace of the Lord's grace.

Valuing the company and grace of great souls is not a reason to give money, obedience or control of your life to anyone who claims to be one. A genuine saint never demands these; if you feel pressured or exploited, step away and seek help.

Meaning today and context

Our own effort matters, but devotion is finally a gift, often received through the kindness of good and holy people.

Narada names the chief means of devotion: the grace of great souls, or a touch of God's own grace.

1.39 Narada

mahatsaṅgastu durlabho'gamyo'moghaśca ||

But the company of great souls is hard to obtain, hard to fathom, and never fruitless.

Valuing the company and grace of great souls is not a reason to give money, obedience or control of your life to anyone who claims to be one. A genuine saint never demands these; if you feel pressured or exploited, step away and seek help.

Meaning today and context

Truly good people are rare and not always easy to recognise, but time with them always changes us for the better.

Narada describes the company of great souls.

1.40 Narada

labhyate'pi tatkṛpayaiva ||

It is gained, too, only by His grace.

Meaning today and context

Meeting the right person at the right time is itself a grace. We can stay open and grateful for it.

Narada says even the company of great souls is gained only by God's grace.

1.41 Narada

tasmiṃstajjane bhedābhāvāt ||

Because there is no difference between Him and His people.

Valuing the company and grace of great souls is not a reason to give money, obedience or control of your life to anyone who claims to be one. A genuine saint never demands these; if you feel pressured or exploited, step away and seek help.

Meaning today and context

Those who truly love God carry something of Him; meeting them is meeting His goodness in human form.

Narada explains why the grace of great souls and of God are the same: there is no difference between God and His devotees.

1.42 Narada

tadeva sādhyatāṃ tadeva sādhyatām ||

Strive for that alone; strive for that alone.

Meaning today and context

Of all the things we could spend our life pursuing, seek good company and love for God first, and keep at it.

Narada urges the seeker, repeating for emphasis: cultivate that alone (the company of great souls and devotion).

1.43 Narada

duḥsaṅgaḥ sarvvathaiva tyājyaḥ ||

Bad company is to be given up in every way.

This is about influences that harm one's inner life, not a reason to shun or look down on anyone; leave abusive or dangerous company by seeking help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

The people and influences we keep close shape what we become. Stepping away from company that drags us down is not snobbery; it protects what we are trying to grow.

Narada, listing the means to devotion, says bad company must be given up completely.

1.44 Narada

kāmakrodhamohasmṛtibhraṃśabuddhināśasarvanāśakāraṇatvāt ||

Because it is the cause of desire, anger, delusion, loss of memory, loss of understanding, and the ruin of everything.

Meaning today and context

Bad influence rarely ruins us in one step. It feeds a want, the want turns to anger when blocked, anger clouds judgement, and we forget what we knew. Seeing the chain helps us break it early.

Narada gives the reason for 43: bad company sets off a chain that ends in ruin. Our 1917 print includes 'ruin of everything' (sarvanāśa), which the common text lacks; the chain recalls Gita 2.62-63.

1.45 Narada

taraṅgāyitā apīme saṅgātsamudrāyanti ||

Though these [passions] are at first only ripples, through company they become an ocean.

Meaning today and context

A small irritation, a passing temptation, a little envy: on their own they fade, but repeated company and talk keep feeding them until they fill the whole mind. Watch what you keep feeding.

Narada continues on bad company: small stirrings, fed by association, swell into an ocean.

1.46 Narada

kastarati kastarati māyāṃ yaḥ saṅgaṃ tyajati yo mahānubhāvaṃ sevate nirmmamo bhavati ||

Who crosses, who crosses over māyā? One who gives up attachment, who serves the great-souled, who becomes free of 'mine'.

Being free of 'mine' is an inner letting go, not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Getting free of illusion is not mainly about cleverness. It comes from loosening our grip, spending time with and serving people wiser than us, and holding 'my things, my people' a little more lightly.

Narada asks the famous question 'who crosses māyā?' and begins the answer that runs through 50.

1.47 Narada

yo viviktasthānaṃ sevate yo lokabandhamunmūlayati nistraiguṇyo bhavati yo yogakṣemaṃ tyajati ||

One who resorts to a solitary place, who uproots the bondage of the world, who goes beyond the three guṇas, who gives up [anxious concern for] acquiring and keeping.

Giving up anxiety over getting and keeping is not advice to neglect earning, savings, health or family; it is about not being ruled by worry. Solitude here means time apart, not cutting oneself off from people.

Meaning today and context

Time alone, away from noise, lets us see what binds us. Much of our anxiety is about getting more and holding on to what we have; the verse invites trusting that care to God rather than being consumed by it.

The answer to 'who crosses māyā?' continues: solitude, cutting worldly bonds, going beyond the three guṇas, and giving up anxiety over getting and keeping.

1.48 Narada

yaḥ karmmaphalaṃ tyajati karmmāṇi saṃnyasyati tato nirdvandvo bhavati ||

One who gives up the fruit of action, who renounces actions [to God], and so becomes free of the pairs of opposites.

Renouncing actions here means offering them to God, not giving up one's work or duties.

Meaning today and context

When we stop measuring each act by what it gets us, praise and blame, gain and loss lose their power to swing us about. We still act; we just stop living at the mercy of outcomes.

The answer continues: giving up the fruits of action and offering actions themselves, one goes beyond the pairs of opposites.

1.49 Narada

yo vedānapi saṃnyasyati kevalamavicchinnānurāgaṃ labhate ||

One who renounces even the Vedas, and gains pure, unbroken love [for God].

Meaning today and context

Even religious rules and rituals can become one more thing to hold on to. The point of them is love; when love becomes steady, the form matters less than the heart.

The answer continues: going even beyond the Vedas (ritual and its rewards), one gains unbroken love alone.

1.50 Narada

sa tarati sa tarati lokāṃstārayati ||

He crosses, he crosses over; he carries the worlds across [too].

Meaning today and context

Someone who has truly found peace does not keep it to themselves; just by being who they are, they help those around them through their own struggles.

Narada closes the answer to 'who crosses māyā?' (46-50): such a person crosses over and helps others across too.
