1.51 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

putra ātmā manuṣyasya bhāryā daivakṛtaḥ sakhā | upajīvanaṃ ca parjanyo dānamasya parāyaṇam ||

"A son is a man's own self; a wife is the friend given by fate; the rain-cloud is his livelihood; and giving is his final refuge."

'Son' and 'wife' reflect the society of the epic; daughters are equally a parent's self, and partners are equal companions.

Meaning today and context

Children carry on who we are; a life partner is a companion given by fortune, not chosen as a possession; our living depends on forces beyond our control; and what we give is the refuge that remains.

Yudhishthira answers: a person's self, fate-given friend, livelihood and final refuge.

1.52 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

dhanyānāmuttamaṃ kiṃ sviddhanānāṃ kiṃ sviduttamam | lābhānāmuttamaṃ kiṃ svitkiṃ sukhānāṃ tathottamam ||

"What is the best of praiseworthy things? What is the best of riches? What is the best of gains? And what is the best of pleasures?"

Meaning today and context

A question about what is truly worth having; the answer follows.

The Yaksha asks what is best among praiseworthy qualities, kinds of wealth, gains and pleasures.

1.53 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

dhanyānāmuttamaṃ dākṣyaṃ dhanānāmuttamaṃ śrutam | lābhānāṃ śreṣṭhamārogyaṃ sukhānāṃ tuṣṭiruttamā ||

"Skill is the best of praiseworthy things; learning is the best of riches; health is the best of gains; and contentment is the best of pleasures."

Meaning today and context

Real wealth is what cannot be taken from you: what you know, the health of your body, and a mind that is content. Without contentment, no amount of pleasure is enough.

Yudhishthira answers what is best of praiseworthy things, riches, gains and pleasures.

1.54 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

kaśca dharmaḥ paro loke kaśca dharmaḥ sadāphalaḥ | kiṃ niyamya na śocanti kaiśca saṃdhirna jīryate ||

"What is the highest dharma in the world? What dharma always bears fruit? What, when restrained, brings no sorrow? And with whom does a bond never wear out?"

Meaning today and context

Four questions about the heart of right living; the answers follow.

The Yaksha asks what is the highest dharma, which dharma always bears fruit, what restrained brings no sorrow, and with whom an alliance never wears out.

1.55 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

ānṛśaṃsyaṃ paro dharmastrayīdharmaḥ sadāphalaḥ | mano yamya na śocanti sadbhiḥ saṃdhirna jīryate ||

"Not being cruel is the highest dharma; the dharma of the three Vedas always bears fruit; those who restrain the mind do not grieve; and a bond with the good never wears out."

Meaning today and context

The highest duty is simply not to be cruel. Much sorrow comes from an unchecked mind, and friendships with good people only deepen with time.

Yudhishthira answers: the highest dharma, the dharma that always bears fruit, what restrained ends sorrow, and the bond that never wears out.

1.56 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

kiṃ nu hitvā priyo bhavati kiṃ nu hitvā na śocati | kiṃ nu hitvārthavānbhavati kiṃ nu hitvā sukhī bhavet ||

"Giving up what does one become dear? Giving up what does one not grieve? Giving up what does one become wealthy? Giving up what may one be happy?"

Meaning today and context

A famous question about what to let go of; the answer follows.

The Yaksha asks what one must give up to become dear, to be free of sorrow, to become wealthy and to be happy.

1.57 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

mānaṃ hitvā priyo bhavati krodhaṃ hitvā na śocati | kāmaṃ hitvārthavānbhavati lobhaṃ hitvā sukhī bhavet ||

"Giving up pride one becomes dear; giving up anger one does not grieve; giving up desire one becomes wealthy; giving up greed one is happy."

Meaning today and context

People warm to us when we drop our pride. Most regret follows anger. We feel rich when we stop wanting more, and greed is what keeps happiness away.

Yudhishthira answers what one gives up to become dear, free of sorrow, wealthy and happy.

1.58 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

mṛtaḥ kathaṃ syātpuruṣaḥ kathaṃ rāṣṭraṃ mṛtaṃ bhavet | śrāddhaṃ mṛtaṃ kathaṃ ca syātkathaṃ yajño mṛto bhavet ||

"How may a person be dead? How does a kingdom become dead? How may a śrāddha be dead? And how does a sacrifice become dead?"

Meaning today and context

A question about what makes things lifeless while they still exist; the answer follows.

The Yaksha asks how a person, a kingdom, a śrāddha (rite for the ancestors) and a sacrifice can each be 'dead'.

1.59 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

mṛto daridraḥ puruṣo mṛtaṃ rāṣṭramarājakam | mṛtamaśrotriyaṃ śrāddhaṃ mṛto yajñastvadakṣiṇaḥ ||

"A poor man is as good as dead; a kingdom without a ruler is dead; a śrāddha without a learned priest is dead; a sacrifice without the priests' fee is dead."

'A poor man is as good as dead' must never be said to someone in poverty, debt or financial crisis; a person's worth does not depend on money. If you feel hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

A society without just leadership falls apart, and a ritual done without its proper heart and support is empty. The line on poverty describes how harshly the world of the epic treated the poor; it is not a judgment on anyone's worth.

Yudhishthira answers how a person, a kingdom, a śrāddha and a sacrifice become 'dead'.

1.60 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

kā dikkimudakaṃ proktaṃ kimannaṃ pārtha kiṃ viṣam | śrāddhasya kālamākhyāhi tataḥ piba harasva ca ||

"What is called the direction? What is water? What is food, son of Pritha, and what is poison? Tell me the time for a śrāddha, then drink and carry [water] away."

Meaning today and context

Riddles with unexpected answers; the answer follows.

The Yaksha asks what is the true direction, water, food and poison, and the right time for a śrāddha.

1.61 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

santo digjalamākāśaṃ gaurannaṃ prārthanā viṣam | śrāddhasya brāhmaṇaḥ kālaḥ kathaṃ vā yakṣa manyase ||

"The good are the direction; the sky is water; the cow is food; begging is poison; and a brāhmaṇa is the time for a śrāddha. Or how do you see it, Yaksha?"

Brāhmaṇa and kṣatriya here describe roles of learning and protection in the society of the epic; they are to be read by conduct, never by birth, and never used to rank or exclude anyone. 'Begging is poison' is not a reason to refuse help when you need it: asking for help in need is wise.

Meaning today and context

When you don't know which way to go, look to good people: they are the direction. And depending on begging from others slowly poisons self-respect. Yudhishthira even ends by asking the Yaksha's view, answering with humility.

Yudhishthira answers what is the direction, water, food, poison, and the time for a śrāddha.

1.62 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

vyākhyātā me tvayā praśnā yāthātathyaṃ paraṃtapa | puruṣaṃ tvidānīmākhyāhi yaśca sarvadhanī naraḥ ||

"You have explained my questions truly, scorcher of foes. Now tell me who is [truly] a person, and who is the man who possesses all wealth."

Meaning today and context

The test moves to its final questions: what makes a person truly a person, and who is truly rich.

The Yaksha accepts the answers so far and asks two more questions: who is truly a 'person', and who is the man who possesses all wealth.

1.63 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

divaṃ spṛśati bhūmiṃ ca śabdaḥ puṇyasya karmaṇaḥ | yāvatsa śabdo bhavati tāvatpuruṣa ucyate ||

"The sound of good deeds touches heaven and earth. As long as that sound lasts, so long is one called a person."

Meaning today and context

We live on in the good we have done. A person is measured not by years lived but by the good that keeps echoing after them.

Yudhishthira answers the first of the last two questions: who is truly a person.

1.64 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

tulye priyāpriye yasya sukhaduḥkhe tathaiva ca | atītānāgate cobhe sa vai sarvadhanī naraḥ ||

"He for whom the pleasant and the unpleasant are equal, and so too joy and sorrow, and both past and future: he indeed is the man who possesses all wealth."

Meaning today and context

The richest person is the one whose peace does not swing with good and bad news, or get lost in regret about the past and worry about the future. That evenness is a wealth no one can take away.

Yudhishthira answers the last question: who is the man who possesses all wealth.

1.65 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

vyākhyātaḥ puruṣo rājanyaśca sarvadhanī naraḥ | tasmāttavaiko bhrātṝṇāṃ yamicchasi sa jīvatu ||

"You have explained, king, who is a person and who is the man with all wealth. Therefore let one of your brothers, whichever you wish, live."

The death of the brothers and their return to life are part of the story, not a promise about death. If you are grieving, let yourself mourn and reach out to people you trust; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Answering well earns a choice, and the choice will be the real test.

Satisfied with his answers, the Yaksha offers Yudhishthira a boon: one of his brothers, whichever he chooses, may live.

1.66 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

śyāmo ya eṣa raktākṣo bṛhacchāla ivodgataḥ | vyūḍhorasko mahābāhurnakulo yakṣa jīvatu ||

"This dark one with red eyes, tall like a great sal tree, broad-chested and long-armed: let Nakula live, Yaksha."

Meaning today and context

Offered the life of any one brother, Yudhishthira does not choose the strongest or the one most useful to himself. The reason comes a few verses later.

Yudhishthira chooses Nakula, his half-brother, the son of Madri.

1.67 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

priyaste bhīmaseno'yamarjuno vaḥ parāyaṇam | sa kasmānnakulaṃ rājansāpatnaṃ jīvamicchasi ||

"Bhimasena is dear to you, and Arjuna is the refuge of you all. Why then, king, do you want Nakula, a half-brother, to live?"

Meaning today and context

The Yaksha presses on self-interest: why not choose the one you love most, or the one you need most?

The Yaksha challenges the choice: why Nakula, a half-brother, rather than Bhima or Arjuna?

1.68 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

yasya nāgasahasreṇa daśasaṃkhyena vai balam | tulyaṃ taṃ bhīmamutsṛjya nakulaṃ jīvamicchasi ||

"Leaving aside Bhima, whose strength equals that of ten thousand elephants, you want Nakula to live?"

Meaning today and context

The test pushes the claim of power and usefulness as hard as it can.

The Yaksha presses: Bhima has the strength of ten thousand elephants.

1.69 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

tathainaṃ manujāḥ prāhurbhīmasenaṃ priyaṃ tava | atha kenānubhāvena sāpatnaṃ jīvamicchasi ||

"People say that this Bhimasena is dear to you. Then for what reason do you want your half-brother to live?"

Meaning today and context

Now the pull is affection: will love for one person outweigh fairness?

The Yaksha presses again on Yudhishthira's love for Bhima.

1.70 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

yasya bāhubalaṃ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ samupāśritāḥ | arjunaṃ tamapāhāya nakulaṃ jīvamicchasi ||

"Setting aside Arjuna, on the strength of whose arms all the Pandavas rely, you want Nakula to live?"

Meaning today and context

The final pressure is dependence: the whole family's future seems to rest on Arjuna.

The Yaksha presses one last time: Arjuna is the one all the Pandavas rely on.

1.71 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

ānṛśaṃsyaṃ paro dharmaḥ paramārthācca me matam | ānṛśaṃsyaṃ cikīrṣāmi nakulo yakṣa jīvatu ||

"Not being cruel is the highest dharma, higher, in my view, even than the highest gain. I want to act without cruelty: let Nakula live, Yaksha."

Meaning today and context

When a choice sets what benefits us against what is kind and fair to someone else, kindness comes first. Yudhishthira gives up advantage so that no one is treated unfairly.

Yudhishthira explains his choice: he values non-cruelty above everything.

1.72 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

dharmaśīlaḥ sadā rājā iti māṃ mānavā viduḥ | svadharmānna caliṣyāmi nakulo yakṣa jīvatu ||

"People know me as a king always devoted to dharma. I will not move from my own dharma: let Nakula live, Yaksha."

Svadharma here is one's own commitment to right conduct, not a birth-based role.

Meaning today and context

Integrity means acting the same way when it costs you as when it is easy. Yudhishthira holds to his values even when bending them would bring back his favourite brothers.

Yudhishthira continues explaining his choice: he will not swerve from his own dharma.

1.73 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

yathā kuntī tathā mādrī viśeṣo nāsti me tayoḥ | mātṛbhyāṃ samamicchāmi nakulo yakṣa jīvatu ||

"As Kunti is, so is Madri; for me there is no difference between them. I want equal [fairness] for both mothers: let Nakula live, Yaksha."

Meaning today and context

Yudhishthira is Kunti's son, so if Madri's son Nakula lives, each mother has a son alive. In blended families and step-relations, fairness means not favouring 'our own'.

Yudhishthira gives his deepest reason: his two mothers, Kunti and Madri, must be treated equally, so each should have a living son.

1.74 Yaksha to Yudhishthira

yasya te'rthācca kāmācca ānṛśaṃsyaṃ paraṃ matam | tasmātte bhrātaraḥ sarve jīvantu bharatarṣabha ||

"Since you hold non-cruelty higher than both wealth and pleasure, therefore let all your brothers live, bull of the Bharatas."

The death of the brothers and their return to life are part of the story, not a promise about death. If you are grieving, let yourself mourn and reach out to people you trust; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context
