Chapter 7 (Bhāgavata 11.12)

7.1 Krishna to Uddhava

na rodhayati māṃ yogo na sāṅkhyaṃ dharma eva ca | na svādhyāyastapastyāgo neṣṭāpūrtaṃ na dakṣiṇā ||

Neither yoga nor Sāṅkhya nor righteous duty, nor study of the Veda, austerity, renunciation, sacrifices and works for the public good, nor gifts to the priests, hold me fast…

Meaning today and context

Religious practice has its place, but none of it is the heart of the matter. Krishna is setting up what matters more than any technique.

Krishna begins a two-verse sentence to Uddhava (Bhāgavata 11.12.1–2): no spiritual discipline wins him over the way the company of the good does. This verse lists the disciplines.

7.2 Krishna to Uddhava

vratāni yajñaśchandāṃsi tīrthāni niyamā yamāḥ | yathāvarundhe satsaṅgaḥ sarvasaṅgāpaho hi mām ||

…nor vows, sacrifice, Vedic hymns, pilgrimages, the observances and restraints, as the company of the good holds me fast; for it removes every other attachment.

Meaning today and context

The people we spend time with shape us more than any ritual. Being around good, sincere people quietly loosens our attachments in a way solitary effort often cannot.

The sentence ends: of all practices, satsanga, the company of the good and wise, is what truly draws Krishna, because it frees one from every other attachment.

7.3 Krishna to Uddhava

satsaṅgena hi daiteyā yātudhānā mṛgāḥ khagāḥ | gandharvāpsaraso nāgāḥ siddhāścāraṇaguhyakāḥ ||

Through the company of the good, Daityas, Rākṣasas, beasts and birds, Gandharvas and Apsarases, Nāgas, Siddhas, Cāraṇas and Guhyakas…

Meaning today and context

No one is excluded by what they are or where they start. Even those counted as wicked or as animals were changed by the company they kept.

Krishna begins a list (11.12.3–6) of beings who reached him through good company, starting with non-human and semi-divine beings, even demons.

7.4 Krishna to Uddhava

vidyādharā manuṣyeṣu vaiśyāḥ śūdrāḥ striyo'ntyajāḥ | rajastamaḥprakṛtayastasmiṃstasminyuge yuge ||

…Vidyādharas, and among humans vaiśyas, śūdras, women and outcastes, beings whose nature is rajas and tamas, in age after age…

The list reflects the social ranking of its time; the point is that devotion and good company lift everyone. Never use it to rank or exclude anyone by birth, caste or gender.

Meaning today and context

Whatever rank society gives people, spiritual worth is not decided by it. The verse names those who were looked down on precisely to say that the way is open to them.

The list continues with Vidyādharas and, among humans, groups the society of the time held low; all of them, in every age, reached Krishna through good company.

7.5 Krishna to Uddhava

bahavo matpadaṃ prāptāstvāṣṭrakāyādhavādayaḥ | vṛṣaparvā balirbāṇo mayaścātha vibhīṣaṇaḥ ||

…many have reached my state: Vṛtra son of Tvaṣṭṛ, Prahlāda son of Kayādhu and others, Vṛṣaparvan, Bali, Bāṇa, Maya and Vibhīṣaṇa,

Meaning today and context

Even figures born among the enemies of the gods are remembered as great devotees.

Krishna names asura and rākṣasa figures from the Purāṇas who reached him: Vṛtra son of Tvaṣṭṛ, Prahlāda son of Kayādhu, Vṛṣaparvan, Bali, Bāṇa, Maya and Vibhīṣaṇa.

7.6 Krishna to Uddhava

sugrīvo hanumānṛkṣo gajo gṛdhro vaṇikpathaḥ | vyādhaḥ kubjā vraje gopyo yajñapatnyastathāpare ||

…Sugrīva, Hanumān, the bear (Jāmbavān), the elephant, the vulture, the merchant, the hunter, Kubjā, the gopīs of Vraja, the wives of the sacrificers, and others too.

Meaning today and context

Monkeys, a vulture, a hunter, a hunchbacked woman, village cowherd girls: the examples are chosen to show that love, not status, is what counts.

The list ends with animals, outsiders and the simple: Sugrīva, Hanumān, the bear Jāmbavān, the elephant, the vulture, a merchant, a hunter, Kubjā, the gopīs of Vraja and the wives of the sacrificing brahmins.

7.7 Krishna to Uddhava

te nādhītaśrutigaṇā nopāsitamahattamāḥ | avratātaptatapasaḥ matsaṅgānmāmupāgatāḥ ||

They had not studied the Vedas, nor sat at the feet of great teachers; they kept no vows and practised no austerities. Through association with me they came to me.

Meaning today and context

You do not need learning, credentials or hard penances to come close to God. Turning towards him, and keeping company with what is good, is enough to begin and to arrive.

Krishna says these devotees had none of the usual qualifications; it was association with him that brought them to him.

7.8 Krishna to Uddhava

kevalena hi bhāvena gopyo gāvo nagā mṛgāḥ | ye'nye mūḍhadhiyo nāgāḥ siddhā māmīyurañjasā ||

By love alone, the gopīs, the cows, the trees, the animals, and others of dull understanding, the serpents, became perfected and came to me with ease,

Meaning today and context

Sincere love does what cleverness cannot. You do not have to be sharp or educated for your devotion to be complete.

Krishna says pure feeling (bhāva) alone, not knowledge, brought the gopīs, cows, trees, animals and serpents to him with ease. The sentence continues into the next verse.

7.9 Krishna to Uddhava

yaṃ na yogena sāṅkhyena dānavratatapo'dhvaraiḥ | vyākhyāsvādhyāyasannyāsaiḥ prāpnuyādyatnavānapi ||

…me, whom even one who strives cannot reach through yoga, Sāṅkhya, giving, vows, austerity and sacrifice, through expounding scripture, study or renunciation.

Meaning today and context

Effort alone does not earn the deepest things; they come through love and openness. This is a check on spiritual pride in one's own practice.

Completes the previous verse: the beings who reached Krishna by love reached the one whom even great effort through every discipline cannot reach.

7.10 Krishna to Uddhava

rāmeṇa sārdhaṃ mathurāṃ praṇīte śvāphalkinā mayyanuraktacittāḥ | vigāḍhabhāvena na me viyoga tīvrādhayo'nyaṃ dadṛśuḥ sukhāya ||

When Akrūra led me away to Mathurā with Balarāma, the gopīs, whose hearts were wholly given to me, deep in that love and in the sharp pain of separation, could see nothing else that would bring them happiness.

This is about the intensity of love for God, not a model for human relationships or for leaving one's marriage.

Meaning today and context

Longing itself can be a form of devotion. The pain of missing God is not a failure of faith; for the gopīs it was the measure of their love.

Krishna recalls the gopīs when Akrūra took him and Balarāma away to Mathurā: their love was so deep that in separation nothing else could make them happy.

7.11 Krishna to Uddhava

tāstāḥ kṣapāḥ preṣṭhatamena nītā mayaiva vṛndāvanagocareṇa | kṣaṇārdhavattāḥ punaraṅga tāsāṃ hīnā mayā kalpasamā babhūvuḥ ||

Those nights they spent with me, their dearest, in the woods of Vṛndāvana passed like half a moment; and those same nights, dear Uddhava, without me became as long as an age.

Meaning today and context

Love changes how we feel time: hours with the beloved vanish, hours apart drag. The verse uses this familiar experience to show how complete the gopīs' absorption was.

Krishna describes how time felt to the gopīs: nights with him flew by, nights without him dragged like ages.

7.12 Krishna to Uddhava

tā nāvidanmayyanuṣaṅgabaddha dhiyaḥ svamātmānamadastathedam | yathā samādhau munayo'bdhitoye nadyaḥ praviṣṭā iva nāmarūpe ||

Their minds bound to me by attachment, they knew neither their own selves nor this nor that, as sages in samādhi do not, and as rivers that enter the ocean's water lose their name and form.

Meaning today and context

Deep love can dissolve the anxious sense of 'me' as completely as meditation does. Losing yourself in something greater is not loss but a kind of arrival.

Krishna says the gopīs' minds were so bound to him that they forgot themselves and everything else, like sages in samādhi or rivers entering the ocean.

7.13 Krishna to Uddhava

matkāmā ramaṇaṃ jāramasvarūpavido'balāḥ | brahma māṃ paramaṃ prāpuḥ saṅgācchatasahasraśaḥ ||

Those women, not knowing my true nature, longed for me as their beloved, even as a lover outside marriage; yet through that bond, by hundreds of thousands, they reached me, the supreme Brahman.

This is about the intensity of love for God, not a model for human relationships or for leaving one's marriage.

Meaning today and context

Whatever form the love takes, turning one's whole heart towards God transforms it. Understanding is not required first; sincere attachment to God does the work.

Krishna says the gopīs, not knowing who he truly was and loving him as a lover, still reached him as the supreme Brahman through that association, in vast numbers.

7.14 Krishna to Uddhava

tasmāttvamuddhavotsṛjya codanāṃ praticodanām | pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca śrotavyaṃ śrutameva ca ||

Therefore, Uddhava, setting aside injunction and prohibition, the path of action and the path of withdrawal, what is yet to be heard and what has already been heard…

Setting aside rules here means surrendering inwardly to God, not giving up ethics, duties or care for others.

Meaning today and context

There comes a point where rules and more information stop helping. What is needed then is not another technique but wholehearted trust.

Krishna draws the conclusion (continued in the next verse): Uddhava should set aside the whole machinery of rules and scriptural learning.

7.15 Krishna to Uddhava

māmekameva śaraṇamātmānaṃ sarvadehinām | yāhi sarvātmabhāvena mayā syā hyakutobhayaḥ ||

…take refuge in me alone, the Self of all embodied beings, with your whole being. Through me you will be free from fear on every side.

Meaning today and context

When fear comes from every direction, the answer here is not more control but refuge: resting your whole self in what is the Self of all. That trust is what removes fear at its root.

The conclusion: take refuge in Krishna alone, the Self of all beings, with your whole being, and be free of fear.

7.16 Uddhava to Krishna

saṃśayaḥ śṛṇvato vācaṃ tava yogeśvareśvara | na nivartata ātmastho yena bhrāmyati me manaḥ ||

O Lord of the masters of yoga, even as I hear your words, the doubt seated in my heart does not leave, and because of it my mind keeps wandering.

Meaning today and context

Hearing the truth does not always settle the mind at once. Admitting honest doubt to a teacher is part of the path, not a failure.

Uddhava confesses that even after hearing Krishna his doubt has not gone; his mind keeps wavering.

7.17 Krishna to Uddhava

sa eṣa jīvo vivaraprasūtiḥ prāṇena ghoṣeṇa guhāṃ praviṣṭaḥ | manomayaṃ sūkṣmamupetya rūpaṃ mātrā svaro varṇa iti sthaviṣṭhaḥ ||

This very life-principle, who comes forth in the inner passages, enters the cave of the heart with breath and sound; taking on a subtle form made of mind, it becomes, at its grossest, metre, accent and syllable.

Meaning today and context

The Divine is not far away; the same life that breathes in us becomes the words we speak. Speech and thought rise from a deeper source within.

Krishna answers Uddhava's doubt by first showing how he himself manifests: as life and as the sound of the Veda, rising from subtle to gross speech.

7.18 Krishna to Uddhava

yathānalaḥ khe'nilabandhuruṣmā balena dāruṇyadhimathyamānaḥ | aṇuḥ prajāto haviṣā samedhate tathaiva me vyaktiriyaṃ hi vāṇī ||

As fire, the heat that is the wind's friend in space, when churned hard in wood is born tiny and then grows with offerings, so too this speech is my manifestation.

Meaning today and context

Something hidden becomes visible through effort and grows when fed. Sacred speech, like fire, is the Divine made perceptible.

An image for the same process: as fire is churned out of wood, born tiny and fed into a blaze, so the Veda's speech is Krishna's manifestation.

7.19 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ gadiḥ karma gatirvisargo ghrāṇo raso dṛksparśaḥ śrutiśca | saṅkalpavijñānamathābhimānaḥ sūtraṃ rajaḥsattvatamovikāraḥ ||

So too speech, action, movement, excretion, smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing, intention and understanding, then the sense of 'I', the thread (of the cosmic mind), and the transformations of rajas, sattva and tamas.

Meaning today and context

Every power we use, from seeing to deciding to the feeling of 'I', comes from one source. Nothing in us is outside the Divine.

Krishna extends the point: not only speech but every faculty and the guṇas themselves are his manifestations.

7.20 Krishna to Uddhava

ayaṃ hi jīvastrivṛdabjayoniravyakta eko vayasā sa ādyaḥ | viśliṣṭaśaktirbahudheva bhāti bījāni yoniṃ pratipadya yadvat ||

This life-principle, threefold, the source of the lotus (of creation), unmanifest, one and first, with its powers divided by time, appears as if many, just as seeds that reach the soil (become many).

Meaning today and context

The many people and things we see are one reality appearing in many forms. Seeing that unity can soften the sense of separation from others.

Krishna says the one primal being, threefold through the guṇas and source of the cosmic lotus, appears as many, as seeds sown in a field become many plants.

7.21 Krishna to Uddhava

yasminnidaṃ protamaśeṣamotaṃ paṭo yathā tantuvitānasaṃsthaḥ | ya eṣa saṃsārataruḥ purāṇaḥ karmātmakaḥ puṣpaphale prasūte ||

He in whom this entire world is woven, warp and weft, as cloth rests on its spread threads, he is this ancient tree of saṃsāra, made of action, which puts forth flowers and fruits.

Meaning today and context

Life is woven from one thread, and what we call the world of ups and downs grows from our actions like a tree from its roots.

Krishna says he is the one on whom the whole world is woven like cloth on threads, and introduces saṃsāra as an ancient tree made of action.

7.22 Krishna to Uddhava

dve asya bīje śatamūlastrinālaḥ pañcaskandhaḥ pañcarasaprasūtiḥ | daśaikaśākho dvisuparṇanīḍastrivalkalo dviphalo'rkaṃ praviṣṭaḥ ||

It has two seeds, a hundred roots, three stems, five trunks; it yields five saps; it has eleven branches, a nest of two birds, three barks and two fruits, and it reaches up to the sun.

Meaning today and context

Our life in the world is a complex growth with deep roots in desire and action, bearing both pleasure and pain. Seeing its structure is the first step to not being trapped in it.

Krishna describes the tree of saṃsāra in riddling numbers. They are usually read as: two seeds, merit and sin; three stems, the guṇas; five trunks, the elements; eleven branches, the senses and mind; two birds, the individual self and the Lord; two fruits, pleasure and pain. Other readings exist.

7.23 Krishna to Uddhava

adanti caikaṃ phalamasya gṛdhrā grāmecarā ekamaraṇyavāsāḥ | haṃsā ya ekaṃ bahurūpamijyairmāyāmayaṃ veda sa veda vedam ||

Vultures that roam the village eat one fruit of it; swans that live in the forest eat the other. He who, through those worthy of honour, knows the One that appears in many forms through māyā, he knows the Veda.

Meaning today and context

People who grab at the world taste mostly its bitter fruit; those with a quieter, detached mind taste its sweetness. Real knowledge is not information but seeing the one behind the many.

Krishna says the greedy, living in the village, eat one fruit of the tree; swans living in the forest eat the other; and whoever knows, through the teachers, the One that appears many through māyā knows the Veda.

7.24 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ gurūpāsanayaikabhaktyā vidyākuṭhāreṇa śitena dhīraḥ | vivṛścya jīvāśayamapramattaḥ sampadya cātmānamatha tyajāstram ||

So, worshipping the teacher with single-minded devotion, the steady one, ever vigilant, should cut down the inner seat of the individual self with the sharpened axe of knowledge, and having reached the Self, then lay the weapon aside.

Meaning today and context

Use knowledge to cut through confusion about who you are, but don't cling to the knowledge itself. Once the work is done, even the tool is set down.

Krishna sums up his answer to Uddhava's doubt: with devotion to the guru and the sharp axe of knowledge, cut down the subtle body of the jīva, reach the Self, and then put the axe down too.
