Chapter 8 (Bhāgavata 11.13)

8.1 Krishna to Uddhava

sattvaṃ rajastama iti guṇā buddherna cātmanaḥ | sattvenānyatamau hanyātsattvaṃ sattvena caiva hi ||

Sattva, rajas and tamas are qualities of the intellect, not of the Self. By sattva one should overcome the other two, and sattva itself by sattva.

Meaning today and context

Laziness, restlessness and even calm are states of mind, not who you are. Strengthen clarity to overcome dullness and agitation, and then don't cling even to feeling good.

Krishna begins a new teaching to Uddhava on the three guṇas: they belong to the intellect, not the Self, and are mastered by sattva.

8.2 Krishna to Uddhava

sattvāddharmo bhavedvṛddhātpuṃso madbhaktilakṣaṇaḥ | sāttvikopāsayā sattvaṃ tato dharmaḥ pravartate ||

From increased sattva arises in a person dharma whose mark is devotion to me. Sattva grows by resorting to what is sāttvic, and from that dharma unfolds.

Meaning today and context

What we take in, food, media, company, places, shapes the mind. Choose what makes you clearer and kinder, and goodness grows naturally.

Krishna says increased sattva gives rise to dharma marked by devotion, and sattva grows by keeping company with what is sāttvic.

8.3 Krishna to Uddhava

dharmo rajastamo hanyātsattvavṛddhiranuttamaḥ | āśu naśyati tanmūlo hyadharma ubhaye hate ||

Dharma, the highest growth of sattva, destroys rajas and tamas; when both are destroyed, adharma, which is rooted in them, quickly perishes.

Meaning today and context

Wrongdoing grows from agitation and dullness. Cultivate clarity and the roots of bad behaviour dry up, rather than fighting each habit separately.

Krishna says dharma, the highest growth of sattva, destroys rajas and tamas, and with them adharma, which is rooted in them.

8.4 Krishna to Uddhava

āgamo'paḥ prajā deśaḥ kālaḥ karma ca janma ca | dhyānaṃ mantro'tha saṃskāro daśaite guṇahetavaḥ ||

Scripture, water, people, place, time, action, birth, meditation, mantra and purification: these ten give rise to the guṇas.

'Birth' here is one influence among ten, not a ranking of people; never use it to judge anyone by caste or family.

Meaning today and context

Our state of mind is shaped by what we read, eat and drink, the people around us, where and when we live, what we do and what we dwell on. Several of these are within our choice.

Krishna lists ten things that strengthen one guṇa or another, depending on whether they are sāttvic, rājasic or tāmasic.

8.5 Krishna to Uddhava

tattatsāttvikamevaiṣāṃ yadyadvṛddhāḥ pracakṣate | nindanti tāmasaṃ tattadrājasaṃ tadupekṣitam ||

Of these, whatever the wise elders praise is sāttvic; what they condemn is tāmasic; and what they pass over is rājasic.

Meaning today and context

When unsure whether something is good for you, look at how wise and experienced people regard it. Their praise, blame and indifference are a useful guide.

Krishna gives a test for telling the guṇas apart: what the wise praise, condemn, or ignore.

8.6 Krishna to Uddhava

sāttvikānyeva seveta pumānsattvavivṛddhaye | tato dharmastato jñānaṃ yāvatsmṛtirapohanam ||

A person should resort only to sāttvic things, for the growth of sattva. From that comes dharma, and from that knowledge, until there is remembrance (of the Self) and the falling away (of false identity).

Meaning today and context

Small, steady choices for what is clear and wholesome add up: better conduct, then deeper understanding, then a truer sense of who you are.

Krishna advises choosing only what is sāttvic, which leads step by step to dharma, knowledge and finally the recovery of one's true nature.

8.7 Krishna to Uddhava

veṇusaṅgharṣajo vahnirdagdhvā śāmyati tadvanam | evaṃ guṇavyatyayajo dehaḥ śāmyati tatkriyaḥ ||

Fire born of bamboos rubbing together burns that forest and then dies down; so too the body, born of the interplay of the guṇas, comes to rest when it has done that same work.

Meaning today and context

The very mind that is caught in its patterns can produce the understanding that burns them up. The tool for freedom grows from the same ground as the problem.

An image: as fire born of bamboos rubbing together burns the forest and then dies down, so the body born of the guṇas, through knowledge arising in it, burns them away and comes to rest.

8.8 Uddhava to Krishna

vidanti martyāḥ prāyeṇa viṣayānpadamāpadām | tathāpi bhuñjate kṛṣṇa tatkathaṃ śvakharājavat ||

Mortals mostly know that sense pleasures are the home of misfortune; yet, Krishna, they go on indulging in them like dogs, donkeys and goats. How can that be?

Meaning today and context

This is the honest question everyone with a bad habit asks: why do I keep doing what I know is harming me? Knowing is not enough; the following verses explain why.

Uddhava asks the famous question: people know sense pleasures lead to trouble, so why do they keep chasing them like animals?

8.9 Krishna to Uddhava

ahamityanyathābuddhiḥ pramattasya yathā hṛdi | utsarpati rajo ghoraṃ tato vaikārikaṃ manaḥ ||

In one who is heedless, the mistaken notion 'I' (as the body) arises in the heart; then fierce rajas rises up and overruns the mind, which is by nature clear.

Meaning today and context

The slide into a craving starts when we stop paying attention and identify with the body's wants. Inattention is the first link in the chain.

Krishna begins his answer: it starts with heedlessness, when the false sense of 'I am this body' arises and rajas takes over the mind.

8.10 Krishna to Uddhava

rajoyuktasya manasaḥ saṅkalpaḥ savikalpakaḥ | tataḥ kāmo guṇadhyānādduḥsahaḥ syāddhi durmateḥ ||

In a mind seized by rajas arise intentions and endless alternatives; then, from dwelling on the qualities of things, comes desire, which the foolish find unbearable.

Meaning today and context

Craving grows from replaying and imagining. The more we dwell on how good something will be, the harder the urge becomes to resist.

Next link: a mind coloured by rajas spins plans and fantasies, and dwelling on the attractions of objects breeds an unbearable desire.

8.11 Krishna to Uddhava

karoti kāmavaśagaḥ karmāṇyavijitendriyaḥ | duḥkhodarkāṇi sampaśyanrajovegavimohitaḥ ||

Under desire's control, with senses unmastered, he does deeds whose outcome is sorrow, even while he sees it, bewildered by the rush of rajas.

For addiction, self-understanding helps but is not a substitute for treatment; seek medical help or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is the answer to 'why do I do it even though I know': the urge, once built up, overrides what we see. The place to intervene is earlier in the chain.

The chain ends in action: ruled by desire and with senses unconquered, a person does deeds that end in sorrow, even seeing it, swept away by rajas.

8.12 Krishna to Uddhava

rajastamobhyāṃ yadapi vidvānvikṣiptadhīḥ punaḥ | atandrito mano yuñjandoṣadṛṣṭirna sajjate ||

Even though the wise person's mind is scattered again and again by rajas and tamas, he tirelessly keeps applying his mind, sees the fault in things, and does not get stuck.

Meaning today and context

Even wise people feel the pull of distraction and craving; the difference is that they keep returning, without giving up, and remember the cost. Struggling is normal; persisting is the practice.

Krishna contrasts the wise: their mind is also pulled again and again by rajas and tamas, but they keep bringing it back and, seeing the harm, do not get attached.

8.13 Krishna to Uddhava

apramatto'nuyuñjīta mano mayyarpayañchanaiḥ | anirviṇṇo yathākālaṃ jitaśvāso jitāsanaḥ ||

Vigilant, he should keep applying his mind, offering it gradually to me, never discouraged, at the proper times, having mastered breath and posture.

Breath and posture practice: learn from a qualified teacher, never force or hold the breath, and stop if there is pain or dizziness. Not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Change comes slowly through regular practice at set times, a steady body and calm breathing, and refusing to be discouraged by setbacks.

Krishna gives the practice: steadily and gradually offer the mind to him, without discouragement, at regular times, with breath and posture mastered.

8.14 Krishna to Uddhava

etāvānyoga ādiṣṭo macchiṣyaiḥ sanakādibhiḥ | sarvato mana ākṛṣya mayyaddhāveśyate yathā ||

This much is the yoga taught by my disciples Sanaka and the others: drawing the mind back from everything and fixing it directly and fully in me.

Meaning today and context

The essence of yoga is simple to state: gather the scattered mind and rest it in what is highest. The rest is detail.

Krishna sums up the yoga taught by Sanaka and the other sages: drawing the mind back from everything and settling it fully in him.

8.15 Uddhava to Krishna

yadā tvaṃ sanakādibhyo yena rūpeṇa keśava | yogamādiṣṭavānetadrūpamicchāmi veditum ||

Keśava, I wish to know when, and in what form, you taught this yoga to Sanaka and the others.

Meaning today and context

Uddhava asks for the story behind the teaching; it introduces the Haṃsa (swan) episode.

Uddhava asks Krishna when and in what form he taught this yoga to Sanaka and the other sages.

8.16 Krishna to Uddhava

putrā hiraṇyagarbhasya mānasāḥ sanakādayaḥ | papracchuḥ pitaraṃ sūkṣmāṃ yogasyaikāntikīmgatim ||

The mind-born sons of Hiraṇyagarbha (Brahmā), Sanaka and the others, asked their father about the subtle, ultimate goal of yoga.

Meaning today and context

The story begins with sincere students asking their teacher the deepest question.

Krishna begins the story: Brahmā's mind-born sons, Sanaka and his brothers, asked their father about the highest goal of yoga.

8.17 Sanaka and the sages to Brahma

guṇeṣvāviśate ceto guṇāścetasi ca prabho | kathamanyonyasantyāgo mumukṣoratititīrṣoḥ ||

Lord, the mind enters into sense objects, and the objects enter into the mind. For one who seeks liberation and wishes to cross beyond them, how can the two be separated from each other?

Meaning today and context

This is the problem of any habit loop: the mind goes out to things, and the things lodge in the mind as memories and urges. The question is how to break that two-way pull.

Within Krishna's story, the sages Sanaka and his brothers put their question to Brahmā: the mind and its objects enter each other, so how can a seeker separate them?

8.18 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ pṛṣṭo mahādevaḥ svayambhūrbhūtabhāvanaḥ | dhyāyamānaḥ praśnabījaṃ nābhyapadyata karmadhīḥ ||

So asked, the great god, the self-born creator of beings, pondered, but could not grasp the root of the question, his mind being bent on action.

Meaning today and context

Even the creator could not answer while his mind was busy with work; deep questions need a quieter mind.

Krishna narrates that Brahmā, asked this, could not find the root of the question, because his mind was occupied with the work of creation.

8.19 Krishna to Uddhava

sa māmacintayaddevaḥ praśnapāratitīrṣayā | tasyāhaṃ haṃsarūpeṇa sakāśamagamaṃ tadā ||

Wishing to reach the far shore of the question, the god thought of me; then I came near him in the form of a swan.

Meaning today and context

When even the greatest teacher is stuck, he turns to God; humility opens the way to the answer.

Brahmā turned his thought to Krishna for help, and Krishna came to him in the form of a swan (Haṃsa).

8.20 Krishna to Uddhava

dṛṣṭvā māmta upavrajya kṛtvā pādābhivandanam | brahmāṇamagrataḥ kṛtvā papracchuḥ ko bhavāniti ||

Seeing me, they came up, bowed at my feet, and, putting Brahmā in front, asked: 'Who are you?'

Meaning today and context

The question 'Who are you?' becomes the starting point of the teaching.

The sages, seeing the swan, bowed at its feet and, with Brahmā in front, asked who he was.

8.21 Krishna to Uddhava

ityahaṃ munibhiḥ pṛṣṭastattvajijñāsubhistadā | yadavocamahaṃ tebhyastaduddhava nibodha me ||

Asked this by the sages who wished to know the truth, hear from me, Uddhava, what I told them then.

Meaning today and context

Krishna returns to Uddhava to introduce the swan's teaching.

Krishna tells Uddhava to listen to what he, as the swan, told the sages who sought the truth.

8.22 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

vastuno yadyanānātva ātmanaḥ praśna īdṛśaḥ | kathaṃ ghaṭeta vo viprā vakturvā me ka āśrayaḥ ||

If the Self is one in reality, without difference, how can such a question of yours make sense, brahmins? And on what ground do I, the speaker, stand to answer?

Meaning today and context

At the deepest level, the line between 'me' and 'you' is not as solid as it seems. Asking 'who are you' already assumes a separation the teaching questions.

The swan (Krishna) answers the sages' 'Who are you?': if the Self is truly one, the question itself does not stand.

8.23 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

pañcātmakeṣu bhūteṣu samāneṣu ca vastutaḥ | ko bhavāniti vaḥ praśno vācārambho hyanarthakaḥ ||

Since all beings are made of the five elements and are the same in substance, your question 'Who are you?' is a mere play of words and has no meaning.

Meaning today and context

Bodies are made of the same stuff, and the Self is the same in all. Labels and identities divide us more than reality does.

The swan continues: all beings are made of the same five elements, so 'Who are you?' is only words.

8.24 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

manasā vacasā dṛṣṭyā gṛhyate'nyairapīndriyaiḥ | ahameva na matto'nyaditi budhyadhvamañjasā ||

Whatever is grasped by mind, by speech, by sight or by the other senses, that is I alone; there is nothing other than me. Understand this directly.

Meaning today and context

Everything we experience can be seen as one reality showing itself. That view can bring a quiet sense of being at home everywhere.

The swan tells the sages that whatever is grasped by mind, speech, sight and the senses is he alone; there is nothing other than him.

8.25 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

guṇeṣvāviśate ceto guṇāścetasi ca prajāḥ | jīvasya deha ubhayaṃ guṇāśceto madātmanaḥ ||

The mind enters the objects, and the objects the mind, my children; but for the living being, whose Self is I, both the objects and the mind are only its covering.

Meaning today and context

The tangle of mind and its cravings is real, but it is not you. Seeing that both thoughts and their objects are layers over the Self loosens their grip.

The swan now answers the sages' question (UG.8.17), repeating it: mind and objects enter each other, but both are only a covering of the jīva, whose true self is the Lord.

8.26 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

guṇeṣu cāviśaccittamabhīkṣṇaṃ guṇasevayā | guṇāśca cittaprabhavā madrūpa ubhayaṃ tyajet ||

The mind enters the objects through repeated indulgence in them, and the objects arise from the mind; one who has become one with me should let go of both.

Meaning today and context

Habits deepen by repetition; the mind then keeps generating the urge. Rest your identity in something deeper than the loop, and you can step out of both sides of it.

The swan explains how the loop forms and how to end it: repeated indulgence draws the mind into objects, objects arise from the mind, and one who identifies with the Lord drops both.

8.27 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

jāgratsvapnaḥ suṣuptaṃ ca guṇato buddhivṛttayaḥ | tāsāṃ vilakṣaṇo jīvaḥ sākṣitvena viniścitaḥ ||

Waking, dream and deep sleep are states of the intellect produced by the guṇas. The living being is known to be distinct from them, as their witness.

Meaning today and context

You are present through waking, dreaming and deep sleep, yet you are none of them. Noticing the awareness that stays the same can steady you when moods and states change.

The swan says waking, dream and deep sleep are states of the intellect produced by the guṇas; the self is distinct from them, their witness.

8.28 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

yarhi saṃsṛtibandho'yamātmano guṇavṛttidaḥ | mayi turye sthito jahyāttyāgastadguṇacetasām ||

Since this bondage of worldly life is what lends the Self the workings of the guṇas, one should give it up, established in me, the fourth; then the guṇas and the mind are renounced.

Meaning today and context

Beneath the changing states there is a steady ground. Resting there, rather than fighting each state, is what loosens their hold.

The swan says this bondage gives the Self the workings of the guṇas; established in the Lord as the fourth (turīya), one should drop it, which is the renunciation of guṇas and mind.

8.29 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

ahaṅkārakṛtaṃ bandhamātmano'rthaviparyayam | vidvānnirvidya saṃsāra cintāṃ turye sthitastyajet ||

Knowing that bondage is made by the ego and turns the Self's true good upside down, the wise one, growing weary of it and established in the fourth, should give up brooding over worldly life.

Meaning today and context

Much of our worry is the ego's story about what we must have and be. Seeing that clearly lets us drop the constant mental churning.

The swan says the wise, seeing that bondage is made by ego and goes against one's true good, grow weary of it and, established in the fourth, let go of anxious thought about worldly life.

8.30 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

yāvannānārthadhīḥ puṃso na nivarteta yuktibhiḥ | jāgartyapi svapannajñaḥ svapne jāgaraṇaṃ yathā ||

As long as a person's notion of many separate things is not turned back by reasoning, the ignorant one, though awake, is asleep, just as in a dream one seems to be awake.

Seeing the world as a dream is about not being ruled by passing experiences; it is not a reason to neglect your body, family, work or treatment. If the world feels unreal in a distressing way, speak to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

We can go through life on autopilot, sure we are awake. Real waking up is seeing past the surface divisions to what is shared.

The swan says that until reasoning removes the sense of many separate things, an ignorant person, though awake, is asleep, like someone who dreams he is awake.

8.31 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

asattvādātmano'nyeṣāṃ bhāvānāṃ tatkṛtā bhidā | gatayo hetavaścāsya mṛṣā svapnadṛśo yathā ||

Since things other than the Self have no reality, the distinctions they create, the destinations and the causes (of action), are false for the Self, as they are for one who dreams.

Seeing the world as a dream is about not being ruled by passing experiences; it is not a reason to neglect your body, family, work or treatment. If the world feels unreal in a distressing way, speak to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Rewards, punishments and the stories we tell about where we are headed do not touch the core of who we are.

The swan says that since things other than the Self are not real, the divisions they make, the destinations and causes of action, are false like a dreamer's visions.

8.32 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

yo jāgare bahiranukṣaṇadharmiṇo'rthān | bhuṅkte samastakaraṇairhṛdi tatsadṛkṣān | svapne suṣupta upasaṃharate sa ekaḥ | smṛtyanvayāttriguṇavṛttidṛgindriyeśaḥ ||

He who in waking enjoys with all his faculties outer objects that change every moment, who in dream enjoys in the heart objects like them, and who in deep sleep withdraws them all, he is one: the witness of the three states of the guṇas, master of the senses, known as one by the continuity of memory.

Meaning today and context

The same 'you' wakes up remembering the dream and the good sleep. That continuity points to an awareness that is steady while everything else changes.

The swan describes the one witness through the three states: enjoying outer objects in waking, inner images in dream, withdrawing all in sleep, known as one by the continuity of memory.

8.33 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

evaṃ vimṛśya guṇato manasastryavasthā | manmāyayā mayi kṛtā iti niścitārthāḥ | sañchidya hārdamanumānasaduktitīkṣṇa | jñānāsinā bhajata mākhilasaṃśayādhim ||

Reflecting thus, that the mind's three states arise from the guṇas and are laid on me by my māyā, and being certain of this, cut through the ego in the heart, the seat of every doubt, with the sword of knowledge sharpened by reasoning and the words of the wise, and worship me.

Meaning today and context

Doubt and confusion often grow from the ego. Careful thinking plus the guidance of wise people can cut through it, leaving room for devotion.

The swan tells the sages to reflect that the mind's three states come from the guṇas and are imposed on the Lord by his māyā, to cut the ego in the heart with the sword of knowledge, and to worship him.

8.34 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

īkṣeta vibhramamidaṃ manaso vilāsaṃ | dṛṣṭaṃ vinaṣṭamatilolamalātacakram | vijñānamekamurudheva vibhāti māyā | svapnastridhā guṇavisargakṛto vikalpaḥ ||

Let one see this as a delusion, a play of the mind: seen and gone, very unsteady, like a whirling firebrand. One consciousness appears as many; it is māyā, a threefold dream, a division produced by the play of the guṇas.

Seeing the world as a dream is about not being ruled by passing experiences; it is not a reason to neglect your body, family, work or treatment. If the world feels unreal in a distressing way, speak to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A spinning torch looks like a ring of fire though it is one point of flame. Many of our fears and highs are like that: vivid, fast, and not as solid as they seem.

The swan says to see the world as a play of the mind, flashing and vanishing like a whirling firebrand: one consciousness appearing as many, a threefold dream of the guṇas, māyā.

8.35 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

dṛṣṭiṃ tataḥ pratinivartya nivṛttatṛṣṇas | tūṣṇīṃ bhavennijasukhānubhavo nirīhaḥ | sandṛśyate kva ca yadīdamavastubuddhyā | tyaktaṃ bhramāya na bhavetsmṛtirānipātāt ||

Then, turning the gaze back, free of thirst, one should be silent, without striving, tasting the happiness of one's own self. If this world is seen now and then, having been let go as unreal, it does not lead to delusion again; it remains only as a memory until the body falls.

Meaning today and context

Contentment comes from turning inward and resting, not from getting more. You still live in the world, but it no longer pulls you around.

The swan says to turn the gaze back, free of thirst, and rest silently in the Self's own joy; if the world still appears in daily life, it no longer deludes, remaining only as a memory until the body falls.

8.36 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

dehaṃ ca naśvaramavasthitamutthitaṃ vā | siddho na paśyati yato'dhyagamatsvarūpam | daivādapetamatha daivavaśādupetaṃ | vāso yathā parikṛtaṃ madirāmadāndhaḥ ||

The perfected one, having realised his own nature, does not notice whether the perishable body is seated or has risen, whether by fate it has gone or by fate it has come, just as one blinded by drink does not notice whether the cloth is still on him.

This describes a sage's inner freedom; it is not advice to neglect your body, health or safety, and not an endorsement of alcohol.

Meaning today and context

Someone deeply settled in themselves is not preoccupied with the body's comings and goings. The image is about freedom from self-preoccupation, not neglect.

The swan describes the realised one: he hardly notices whether his body sits, stands, goes or comes by fate, like a drunk man who does not notice his clothes.

8.37 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

deho'pi daivavaśagaḥ khalu karma yāvat | svārambhakaṃ pratisamīkṣata eva sāsuḥ | taṃ saprapañcamadhirūḍhasamādhiyogaḥ | svāpnaṃ punarna bhajate pratibuddhavastuḥ ||

The body too, under fate's control, stays alive with its breath as long as the karma that began it lasts. But one who has risen to the yoga of samādhi and woken to reality does not again embrace that body and its world, which are like a dream.

Meaning today and context

Life runs its natural course; awakening does not end it. What changes is that you no longer mistake the body and its circumstances for the whole of who you are.

The swan says the body, governed by fate, lives on with its breath while the karma that started it lasts; but one awakened in samādhi does not take it and its world as himself again, as one does not return to a dream.

8.38 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

mayaitaduktaṃ vo viprā guhyaṃ yatsāṅkhyayogayoḥ | jānīta māgataṃ yajñaṃ yuṣmaddharmavivakṣayā ||

Brahmins, I have told you the secret of Sāṅkhya and Yoga. Know me to be Yajña, who has come wishing to teach you your dharma.

Meaning today and context

The answer came not from Brahmā's effort but from the Divine itself. Sincere questions can draw the answer to us.

The swan reveals himself to the sages: he has told them the secret of Sāṅkhya and Yoga and is Yajña (Viṣṇu), come to teach them their dharma.

8.39 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

ahaṃ yogasya sāṅkhyasya satyasyartasya tejasaḥ | parāyaṇaṃ dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ śriyaḥ kīrterdamasya ca ||

Best of the twice-born, I am the final refuge of yoga and Sāṅkhya, of truth and right order, of radiance, of fortune, of fame and of self-control.

Meaning today and context

Every good thing, truth, discipline, success, has its source and goal in the Divine.

The swan tells the sages he is the final refuge of yoga, Sāṅkhya, truth, right order, radiance, fortune, fame and self-control.

8.40 Krishna to Sanaka and the sages

māṃ bhajanti guṇāḥ sarve nirguṇaṃ nirapekṣakam | suhṛdaṃ priyamātmānaṃ sāmyāsaṅgādayo'guṇāḥ ||

All good qualities serve me, who am beyond qualities and need nothing: the friend, the beloved, the Self. Equanimity, non-attachment and the like are qualities beyond the guṇas.

Meaning today and context

The Divine is not distant or demanding; it is described as a friend and the dearest one. Calm and freedom from clinging are not moods that come and go but closer to our true nature.

The swan says all good qualities seek him, though he is beyond qualities and needs nothing: the friend, the beloved, the Self; and virtues like equanimity and non-attachment are not products of the guṇas.

8.41 Krishna to Uddhava

iti me chinnasandehā munayaḥ sanakādayaḥ | sabhājayitvā parayā bhaktyāgṛṇata saṃstavaiḥ ||

Their doubts thus cut away by me, the sages Sanaka and the others honoured me with supreme devotion and praised me with hymns.

Meaning today and context

When doubt is cleared, gratitude and devotion follow naturally.

Krishna tells Uddhava that the sages, their doubts removed, honoured him with devotion and praised him with hymns.

8.42 Krishna to Uddhava

tairahaṃ pūjitaḥ saṃyaksaṃstutaḥ paramarṣibhiḥ | pratyeyāya svakaṃ dhāma paśyataḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ ||

Worshipped and fully praised by those great sages, I returned to my own abode while Brahmā looked on.

Meaning today and context

The Haṃsa story closes; the teaching remains.

Krishna ends the story: honoured by the sages, he returned to his own abode as Brahmā watched.
