Chapter 9 (Bhāgavata 11.14)

9.1 Uddhava to Krishna

vadanti kṛṣṇa śreyāṃsi bahūni brahmavādinaḥ | teṣāṃ vikalpaprādhānyamutāho ekamukhyatā ||

Krishna, those who expound the Veda speak of many ways to the highest good. Are they all equal alternatives, or is one of them foremost?

Meaning today and context

Faced with many spiritual paths and teachers, it is natural to ask whether they are all the same or whether one matters most. Uddhava asks that honestly, and the chapter is the answer.

Uddhava opens a new question to Krishna (Bhāgavata 11.14.1): teachers of the Veda name many paths to the highest good; are they all equal options, or is one of them the chief?

9.2 Uddhava to Krishna

bhavatodāhṛtaḥ svāminbhaktiyogo'napekṣitaḥ | nirasya sarvataḥ saṅgaṃ yena tvayyāviśenmanaḥ ||

Lord, you have described the yoga of devotion, which needs nothing else, by which the mind, giving up attachment on every side, may enter into you.

Meaning today and context

Devotion is presented as complete in itself: love for God that slowly loosens the mind's grip on everything else, rather than one technique among many.

Uddhava continues: Krishna has already praised a path of devotion that depends on nothing else; he wants to know how it relates to the other paths.

9.3 Krishna to Uddhava

kālena naṣṭā pralaye vāṇīyaṃ vedasaṃjñitā | mayādau brahmaṇe proktā dharmo yasyāṃ madātmakaḥ ||

This speech called the Veda was lost through time at the dissolution. At the beginning I spoke it to Brahmā; in it is taught the dharma whose essence is me.

Meaning today and context

The text roots all scripture in one source. Whatever form teaching takes, its heart is meant to point back to the divine.

Krishna begins his answer by tracing where the Veda came from: lost at the world's dissolution, he spoke it again to Brahmā at the start of creation.

9.4 Krishna to Uddhava

tena proktā svaputrāya manave pūrvajāya sā | tato bhṛgvādayo'gṛhṇansapta brahmamaharṣayaḥ ||

Brahmā taught it to his son Manu, the first-born, and from him the seven great brahmarṣis, Bhṛgu and the others, received it.

Meaning today and context

Teaching passes from person to person; each one who receives it shapes how it is passed on.

Krishna continues the lineage of the Veda: from Brahmā to Manu, and from Manu to the seven great sages.

9.5 Krishna to Uddhava

tebhyaḥ pitṛbhyastatputrā devadānavaguhyakāḥ | manuṣyāḥ siddhagandharvāḥ savidyādharacāraṇāḥ ||

From those fathers it passed to their sons: gods, demons and guhyakas, humans, siddhas and gandharvas, with vidyādharas and cāraṇas,

Meaning today and context

The same teaching reached every kind of being, which sets up the point that follows: one teaching, received differently.

The lineage continues: from those sages, the fathers of all beings, the Veda passed to their descendants of every kind.

9.6 Krishna to Uddhava

kindevāḥ kinnarā nāgā rakṣaḥkimpuruṣādayaḥ | bahvyasteṣāṃ prakṛtayo rajaḥsattvatamobhuvaḥ ||

kindevas, kinnaras, nāgas, rākṣasas, kimpuruṣas and others. Their natures are many, arising from rajas, sattva and tamas.

Meaning today and context

People differ in temperament, and that difference shapes how they hear even the same truth.

Krishna completes the list of beings who received the Veda and adds the key point: their natures differ, born of the three guṇas.

9.7 Krishna to Uddhava

yābhirbhūtāni bhidyante bhūtānāṃ patayastathā | yathāprakṛti sarveṣāṃ citrā vācaḥ sravanti hi ||

By these natures beings are divided, and so are their leaders; and from all of them, each according to its nature, varied words pour forth.

Meaning today and context

What people say about life and truth reflects who they are. Knowing this makes it easier to listen without being thrown by every opinion.

Krishna explains that these natures divide beings and their leaders, and that each speaks according to its nature.

9.8 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ prakṛtivaicitryādbhidyante matayo nṛṇām | pāramparyeṇa keṣāñcitpāṣaṇḍamatayo'pare ||

So, because of the variety of natures, the views of people differ. Some hold theirs through tradition handed down; others hold views that reject the Veda.

The word pāṣaṇḍa (views rejecting the Veda) belongs to its time and context; it is not a licence to condemn or look down on people of other faiths or of none.

Meaning today and context

Disagreement about the deepest questions is expected, not a scandal. It comes from temperament and upbringing as much as from argument.

Krishna draws the conclusion: human opinions differ because natures differ; some hold views handed down by tradition, others hold views outside the Veda.

9.9 Krishna to Uddhava

manmāyāmohitadhiyaḥ puruṣāḥ puruṣarṣabha | śreyo vadantyanekāntaṃ yathākarma yathāruci ||

Best of men, people whose understanding is bewildered by my māyā describe the highest good in many different ways, according to their actions and their liking.

Meaning today and context

We tend to call 'the highest good' whatever suits our habits and tastes. It is worth asking whether our idea of the good is simply our preference.

Krishna says that people whose minds are clouded by his māyā describe the highest good in many conflicting ways, each by habit and taste.

9.10 Krishna to Uddhava

dharmameke yaśaścānye kāmaṃ satyaṃ damaṃ śamam | anye vadanti svārthaṃ vā aiśvaryaṃ tyāgabhojanam | kecidyajñaṃ tapo dānaṃ vratāni niyamānyamān ||

Some say it is dharma, others fame, others pleasure, truth, self-restraint or calm. Others say self-interest, or power, or renunciation, or enjoyment; some say sacrifice, austerity, giving, vows, or the observances and restraints.

Meaning today and context

The list is a mirror: duty, reputation, pleasure, power, discipline, generosity. Most of us pursue one of these as if it were the final goal.

Krishna lists the many things people call the highest good.

9.11 Krishna to Uddhava

ādyantavanta evaiṣāṃ lokāḥ karmavinirmitāḥ | duḥkhodarkāstamoniṣṭhāḥ kṣudrā mandāḥ śucārpitāḥ ||

The worlds these people reach are built by action and have a beginning and an end. They end in sorrow, rest on darkness, and are small, meagre and tinged with grief.

Meaning today and context

Anything won by effort, a title, a fortune, a reputation, can also be lost, and the fear of losing it comes with it. That is not a reason to stop working, but a reason not to rest your whole happiness there.

Krishna judges all those goals: the states they win are produced by action and so do not last.

9.12 Krishna to Uddhava

mayyarpitātmanaḥ sabhya nirapekṣasya sarvataḥ | mayātmanā sukhaṃ yattatkutaḥ syādviṣayātmanām ||

Gentle Uddhava, the happiness that comes through me, the Self, to one who has offered himself to me and wants nothing from anything: how could that come to those whose self is bound up in sense-objects?

Meaning today and context

There is a joy that does not depend on getting things. It comes from giving yourself to something greater, and someone always chasing the next pleasure cannot taste it.

Krishna contrasts those passing rewards with the joy of one who has given himself to him.

9.13 Krishna to Uddhava

akiñcanasya dāntasya śāntasya samacetasaḥ | mayā santuṣṭamanasaḥ sarvāḥ sukhamayā diśaḥ ||

For one who owns nothing, who is self-controlled, calm and even-minded, whose mind is content in me, every direction is full of happiness.

'Owning nothing' (akiñcana) here means not being possessed by possessions; it is not advice to give away what you and your dependants need.

Meaning today and context

Contentment is not found in a place or a situation; when the mind is at rest, wherever you go feels like enough.

Krishna describes the person whose contentment rests in him: for such a one, every direction is full of happiness.

9.14 Krishna to Uddhava

na pārameṣṭhyaṃ na mahendradhiṣṇyaṃ | na sārvabhaumaṃ na rasādhipatyam | na yogasiddhīrapunarbhavaṃ vā | mayyarpitātmecchati madvinānyat ||

Not the seat of Brahmā, not the throne of great Indra, not rule over the whole earth or lordship of the lower worlds, not yogic powers, not even freedom from rebirth: one who has offered himself to me wants nothing apart from me.

Meaning today and context

Real love does not bargain. Devotion at its fullest is not a way to get something, even something spiritual; the relationship itself is enough.

Krishna says the one devoted to him wants nothing else at all, not the highest heavens, not power, not even liberation.

9.15 Krishna to Uddhava

na tathā me priyatama ātmayonirna śaṅkaraḥ | na ca saṅkarṣaṇo na śrīrnaivātmā ca yathā bhavān ||

Not Brahmā the self-born, not Śaṅkara, not Saṅkarṣaṇa, not Śrī, not even my own self is as dear to me as you are.

Meaning today and context

In this tradition God's love for the devotee is as real as the devotee's love for God. Someone who feels unworthy is told: you are deeply loved.

Krishna tells Uddhava how dear such a devotee, and Uddhava himself, is to him.

9.16 Krishna to Uddhava

nirapekṣaṃ muniṃ śāntaṃ nirvairaṃ samadarśanam | anuvrajāmyahaṃ nityaṃ pūyeyetyaṅghrireṇubhiḥ ||

The sage who needs nothing, who is at peace, without enmity, seeing all with an equal eye, I follow always, thinking, 'Let me be purified by the dust of his feet.'

Meaning today and context

Calm, freedom from grudges and seeing everyone as equal are so precious that God is pictured following the person who has them. These qualities, not status, are what make someone great.

Krishna describes the sage he himself follows: one who needs nothing, is calm, bears no enmity and sees all equally.

9.17 Krishna to Uddhava

Owning nothing, their hearts devoted to me, peaceful, great-souled, tender towards every living being, their minds untouched by desires: they enjoy my happiness, the happiness of needing nothing, which others do not know.

'Owning nothing' is about inner freedom from craving; it is not advice to give up a livelihood or neglect those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

Needing nothing is itself a kind of joy, and it goes with kindness to every living thing. Fewer cravings leave more room for care.

Krishna describes his true devotees and the happiness that only they know.

9.18 Krishna to Uddhava

bādhyamāno'pi madbhakto viṣayairajitendriyaḥ | prāyaḥ pragalbhayā bhaktyā viṣayairnābhibhūyate ||

Even if my devotee has not yet conquered the senses and is troubled by sense-objects, by the strength of a bold devotion he is, for the most part, not overpowered by them.

Devotion can be a real support, but addiction is a health condition; seek medical or counselling help alongside it (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

You don't have to be perfect before you begin. A sincere, steady love for something higher helps you hold your ground against habits you have not yet overcome.

Krishna reassures that even a devotee who has not yet mastered the senses is carried through by strong devotion.

9.19 Krishna to Uddhava

yathāgniḥ susamṛddhārciḥ karotyedhāṃsi bhasmasāt | tathā madviṣayā bhaktiruddhavaināṃsi kṛtsnaśaḥ ||

As a fire with blazing flames turns firewood to ash, so devotion to me, Uddhava, burns away sins completely.

Inner purification does not replace making amends to people you have harmed, or legal responsibility.

Meaning today and context

Past wrongs do not have to define you. Turning wholeheartedly towards the good can burn away the weight of what you have done, the way fire consumes wood.

Krishna gives an image for the purifying power of devotion.

9.20 Krishna to Uddhava

na sādhayati māṃ yogo na sāṅkhyaṃ dharma uddhava | na svādhyāyastapastyāgo yathā bhaktirmamorjitā ||

Not yoga, not Sāṅkhya, not dharma, Uddhava, not study of scripture, austerity or renunciation wins me as strong devotion to me does.

Meaning today and context

Techniques, learning and discipline have their place, but what reaches God most surely is love. A simple person who loves sincerely is not behind the scholar.

Krishna answers Uddhava's first question directly: of all the paths, strong devotion reaches him as nothing else does.

9.21 Krishna to Uddhava

bhaktyāhamekayā grāhyaḥ śraddhayātmā priyaḥ satām | bhaktiḥ punāti manniṣṭhā śvapākānapi sambhavāt ||

I am reached only through devotion, through faith; I am the Self, dear to the good. Devotion fixed on me purifies even the śvapākas, those born outcaste, of the stain of birth.

The verse speaks in the caste language of its time; its point is that devotion overrides birth. It must never be read as saying anyone is impure by birth, or used to rank or exclude people.

Meaning today and context

The door of devotion is open to everyone, whatever their birth or background. No one is shut out of God's love.

Krishna says he is reached by devotion alone, and that devotion purifies anyone, even those whom society of the time placed lowest.

9.22 Krishna to Uddhava

dharmaḥ satyadayopeto vidyā vā tapasānvitā | madbhaktyāpetamātmānaṃ na samyakprapunāti hi ||

Dharma joined with truth and compassion, or learning joined with austerity, does not fully purify a self that lacks devotion to me.

Meaning today and context

Being good and being learned matter, but without a heart turned towards something beyond oneself they can harden into pride. Devotion softens and completes them.

Krishna says that even virtue and learning, without devotion, do not fully purify a person.

9.23 Krishna to Uddhava

kathaṃ vinā romaharṣaṃ dravatā cetasā vinā | vinānandāśrukalayā śudhyedbhaktyā vināśayaḥ ||

Without the thrill that raises the hair, without the heart melting, without tears of joy, how could the heart be purified by devotion?

Meaning today and context

Devotion is meant to move the heart, not just be a routine. When prayer touches you deeply, that softening is itself the change.

Krishna describes the feeling that marks real devotion: the heart melting, tears of joy.

9.24 Krishna to Uddhava

vāggadgadā dravate yasya cittaṃ rudatyabhīkṣṇaṃ hasati kvacicca | vilajja udgāyati nṛtyate ca madbhaktiyukto bhuvanaṃ punāti ||

One whose voice chokes, whose heart melts, who weeps again and again and sometimes laughs, who without embarrassment sings aloud and dances: such a one, joined to me in devotion, purifies the world.

Meaning today and context

Wholehearted love is not something to be embarrassed about. Tears, laughter and song in worship are signs of a heart opening, and such joy blesses those around it.

Krishna describes the devotee overwhelmed by love, whose very presence purifies the world.

9.25 Krishna to Uddhava

yathāgninā hema malaṃ jahāti dhmātaṃ punaḥ svaṃ bhajate ca rūpam | ātmā ca karmānuśayaṃ vidhūya madbhaktiyogena bhajatyatho mām ||

As gold, heated in the fire, gives up its impurity and takes back its own true form, so the self, shaking off the residue of past action through the yoga of devotion, comes to me.

Meaning today and context

Your true nature is not lost, only covered. Hard seasons of sincere practice are like the fire that burns off what is not you, leaving what you really are.

Krishna gives the image of gold refined in fire for how devotion restores the self.

9.26 Krishna to Uddhava

yathā yathātmā parimṛjyate'sau matpuṇyagāthāśravaṇābhidhānaiḥ | tathā tathā paśyati vastu sūkṣmaṃ cakṣuryathaivāñjanasamprayuktam ||

The more the self is cleansed by hearing and telling my sacred stories, the more it sees the subtle truth, as an eye treated with healing salve sees clearly.

Meaning today and context

What you repeatedly listen to and talk about shapes what you can see. Filling the mind with what is good gradually clears its vision.

Krishna says that hearing and speaking of his sacred stories cleanses the mind and sharpens its sight.

9.27 Krishna to Uddhava

viṣayāndhyāyataścittaṃ viṣayeṣu viṣajjate | māmanusmarataścittaṃ mayyeva pravilīyate ||

The mind of one who dwells on sense-objects gets stuck in sense-objects; the mind of one who keeps remembering me dissolves into me.

Meaning today and context

You become what you keep thinking about. Brooding on cravings deepens them; turning the mind again and again to something higher slowly changes where it rests.

Krishna states a basic law of the mind: it becomes absorbed in whatever it dwells on.

9.28 Krishna to Uddhava

tasmādasadabhidhyānaṃ yathā svapnamanoratham | hitvā mayi samādhatsva mano madbhāvabhāvitam ||

Therefore give up brooding on what is unreal, which is like the wishes of a dream, and fix your mind on me, steeped in love for me.

Meaning today and context

Much of our mental energy goes into daydreams and imagined scenarios that are no more solid than a dream. Gently letting them go and returning to what you love most steadies the mind.

Krishna draws the practical lesson from the previous verse.

9.29 Krishna to Uddhava

strīṇāṃ strīsaṅgināṃ saṅgaṃ tyaktvā dūrata ātmavān | kṣeme vivikta āsīnaścintayenmāmatandritaḥ ||

Keeping far from the company of women and of men attached to women, self-possessed, seated in a safe and solitary place, one should meditate on me, alert.

This reflects the renunciate, male-addressed viewpoint of its time and concerns one's own craving. It must never be used to blame, avoid, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

For meditation, choose a quiet, safe place and keep away from company and situations that stir up your own cravings.

Krishna, speaking to a renunciate seeker, says to keep away from company that inflames desire and to meditate on him in a quiet, safe place.

9.30 Krishna to Uddhava

na tathāsya bhavetkleśo bandhaścānyaprasaṅgataḥ | yoṣitsaṅgādyathā puṃso yathā tatsaṅgisaṅgataḥ ||

No other attachment brings a man such affliction and bondage as attachment to women and the company of those attached to them.

This reflects the renunciate viewpoint of its time, addressed to men seeking liberation; it is about one's own craving, is not the app's view of women, and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

Read for today, the point is about one's own consuming desire: craving that dominates the mind binds more tightly than almost anything else.

Krishna, still addressing the renunciate seeker, says sexual attachment binds a man more than any other attachment.

9.31 Uddhava to Krishna

yathā tvāmaravindākṣa yādṛśaṃ vā yadātmakam | dhyāyenmumukṣuretanme dhyānaṃ tvaṃ vaktumarhasi ||

Lotus-eyed one, how, in what form and as what nature should one who seeks liberation meditate on you? Please tell me this meditation.

Meaning today and context

Wanting to meditate is not enough; Uddhava asks for a clear method. It is good to ask a teacher how, not just why.

Uddhava asks Krishna to teach the method of meditating on him.

9.32 Krishna to Uddhava

sama āsana āsīnaḥ samakāyo yathāsukham | hastāvutsaṅga ādhāya svanāsāgrakṛtekṣaṇaḥ ||

Seated on a level seat, the body held straight and comfortable, the hands resting in the lap, the gaze set on the tip of one's nose,

Learn posture from a qualified teacher and stop if there is pain; adapt it to your body. This is not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Meditation starts with the body: a steady, comfortable seat and a settled gaze help the mind settle too.

Krishna begins the method of meditation with posture.

9.33 Krishna to Uddhava

prāṇasya śodhayenmārgaṃ pūrakumbhakarecakaiḥ | viparyayeṇāpi śanairabhyasennirjitendriyaḥ ||

one should clear the passage of the breath by inhaling, holding and exhaling, and also in the reverse order; with the senses mastered, practise this gradually.

Breath retention should only be learned from a qualified teacher. Never hold the breath forcibly; stop if dizzy or breathless, and consult a doctor if you have heart, blood-pressure or breathing problems or are pregnant. Not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

The key word is 'gradually': calm breathing settles the mind, but it is built up slowly, never forced.

Krishna gives the breath practice that prepares for meditation.

9.34 Krishna to Uddhava

hṛdyavicchinnamoṃkāraṃ ghaṇṭānādaṃ bisorṇavat | prāṇenodīrya tatrātha punaḥ saṃveśayetsvaram ||

Raising with the breath, from the heart, the unbroken syllable Om, which sounds like a bell and runs on like the fibre of a lotus stalk, one should then let the sound sink back to rest.

Practise breath and sound methods with a qualified teacher; never strain the breath. Not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Chanting Om slowly and continuously, then resting in the silence after it, is an old and gentle way to gather the mind.

Krishna joins the breath practice with the sound Om rising from the heart.

9.35 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ praṇavasaṃyuktaṃ prāṇameva samabhyaset | daśakṛtvastriṣavaṇaṃ māsādarvāgjitānilaḥ ||

In this way one should practise the breath joined with Om, ten times at each of the three junctures of the day; within a month one gains mastery of the breath.

The month is the text's claim, not a promise. Practise with a qualified teacher, never force the breath, and consult a doctor for heart, blood-pressure or breathing conditions or pregnancy.

Meaning today and context

Regularity matters more than intensity: a short practice done faithfully every day bears fruit over weeks.

Krishna gives the schedule for the breath practice and its result.

9.36 Krishna to Uddhava

hṛtpuṇḍarīkamantaḥsthamūrdhvanālamadhomukham | dhyātvordhvamukhamunnidramaṣṭapatraṃ sakarṇikam ||

Meditating on the lotus of the heart within, its stalk pointing up and its face turned down, one should then picture it turned upward and in bloom, with eight petals and its central whorl,

Meaning today and context

The image of a closed lotus opening in the heart is a gentle picture of the heart awakening to love.

Krishna describes visualising the lotus of the heart.

9.37 Krishna to Uddhava

karṇikāyāṃ nyasetsūrya somāgnīnuttarottaram | vahnimadhye smaredrūpaṃ mamaitaddhyānamaṅgalam ||

On its whorl one should place the sun, the moon and fire, one within the other; and in the midst of the fire remember this form of mine, which is the auspicious object of meditation.

Meaning today and context

The meditation moves step by step inward, from light to light, to rest on the form of the beloved.

Krishna continues: within the heart-lotus, sun, moon and fire, and in the fire his form.

9.38 Krishna to Uddhava

samaṃ praśāntaṃ sumukhaṃ dīrghacārucaturbhujam | sucārusundaragrīvaṃ sukapolaṃ śucismitam ||

a form well-proportioned, utterly peaceful, with a gracious face, four long and lovely arms, a beautiful neck, fine cheeks and a pure smile,

Meaning today and context

Meditation on a peaceful, smiling form helps the mind take on that peace.

Krishna begins describing the form to be meditated on.

9.39 Krishna to Uddhava

samānakarṇavinyasta sphuranmakarakuṇḍalam | hemāmbaraṃ ghanaśyāmaṃ śrīvatsaśrīniketanam ||

with shining makara-shaped earrings set in both ears alike, clothed in gold, dark as a rain-cloud, bearing the śrīvatsa mark where Śrī dwells,

Meaning today and context

Detailed images give the wandering mind something beautiful to rest on, one feature at a time.

The description of Krishna's form continues.

9.40 Krishna to Uddhava

śaṅkhacakragadāpadma vanamālāvibhūṣitam | nūpurairvilasatpādaṃ kaustubhaprabhayā yutam ||

adorned with conch, discus, mace and lotus and a garland of forest flowers, the feet bright with anklets, glowing with the light of the Kaustubha gem,

Meaning today and context

Each ornament is a point for the attention to rest on lovingly.

The description of Krishna's form continues.

9.41 Krishna to Uddhava

dyumatkirīṭakaṭaka kaṭisūtrāṅgadāyutam | sarvāṅgasundaraṃ hṛdyaṃ prasādasumukhekṣaṇam ||

wearing a radiant crown, bracelets, girdle and armlets, beautiful in every limb, captivating, with a face and glance full of grace,

Meaning today and context

The form ends on a gracious, kindly gaze: the meditator is invited to feel looked on with love.

The description of Krishna's form concludes.

9.42 Krishna to Uddhava

sukumāramabhidhyāyetsarvāṅgeṣu mano dadhat | indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyo manasākṛṣya tanmanaḥ | buddhyā sārathinā dhīraḥ praṇayenmayi sarvataḥ ||

one should meditate on that tender form, setting the mind on each of its limbs. Drawing the senses back from their objects with the mind, the steady one should guide that mind wholly towards me, with the intellect as charioteer.

Meaning today and context

Attention can be trained: pull it back from distractions, and let your clearer judgement steer it, the way a driver steers a chariot, towards what you have chosen.

Krishna describes how to hold the mind on that form, using the image of the intellect as charioteer.

9.43 Krishna to Uddhava

tatsarvavyāpakaṃ cittamākṛṣyaikatra dhārayet | nānyāni cintayedbhūyaḥ susmitaṃ bhāvayenmukham ||

Drawing in the mind that was spread over the whole form, one should hold it on one place; thinking of nothing else any more, one should contemplate the smiling face.

Meaning today and context

Concentration grows by narrowing: from a wide field to one point. Choosing one gentle object and returning to it is the heart of focus.

Krishna narrows the meditation: from the whole form to the smiling face alone.

9.44 Krishna to Uddhava

tatra labdhapadaṃ cittamākṛṣya vyomni dhārayet | tacca tyaktvā madāroho na kiñcidapi cintayet ||

When the mind is established there, drawing it in, one should hold it on space; then, letting that go too and rising to me, one should think of nothing at all.

Deep meditation can sometimes bring up distressing experiences; people with trauma, psychosis or severe depression should practise under guidance. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Deep meditation moves from a form, to open space, to a stillness with no object at all. It is a gradual path, not something to force.

Krishna describes the next stage: from the face to open space, and then beyond all thought.

9.45 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ samāhitamatirmāmevātmānamātmani | vicaṣṭe mayi sarvātmanjyotirjyotiṣi saṃyutam ||

With the mind thus composed, one sees me as the Self within oneself, and oneself in me, the Self of all, joined like light with light.

Meaning today and context

At its deepest, devotion and self-knowledge meet: the God you seek is found as your own innermost Self, and you are not separate from the whole.

Krishna describes the fruit of this meditation: seeing him as the Self, and the self in him.

9.46 Krishna to Uddhava

dhyānenetthaṃ sutīvreṇa yuñjato yogino manaḥ | saṃyāsyatyāśu nirvāṇaṃ dravya jñānakriyābhramaḥ ||

For the yogi who joins his mind to me in this way through intense meditation, the illusion of object, knowledge and action soon comes to rest and is extinguished.

Meaning today and context

Steady, wholehearted practice quiets the restless sense of being a separate doer facing a world of objects, leaving deep peace.

Krishna closes the chapter: such intense meditation soon ends the illusion that splits experience into object, knowing and doing.
