baddho mukta iti vyākhyā guṇato me na vastutaḥ | guṇasya māyāmūlatvānna me mokṣo na bandhanam ||
'Bound' and 'free' are ways of speaking that come from the guṇas, which are mine, not from reality. Since the guṇas have their root in māyā, for me there is neither liberation nor bondage.
Meaning today and context
The labels we carry, stuck or free, failed or succeeded, describe our moods and conditions, not the self underneath them. Seeing that loosens their grip a little.
Bhāgavata 11.11.1. Uddhava has asked how the self can be bound or free; Krishna answers that 'bound' and 'free' are descriptions that belong to the guṇas, not to what one really is.
Grief and delusion, pleasure and pain, and taking on a body all come about through māyā. Like a dream, which is only the mind's own projection, worldly existence is not real.
For someone grieving, the verse does not say their loss or pain is unreal or unimportant. Acknowledge the grief first; if it is overwhelming, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
When pain or grief feels total, it can help to remember that it is something passing through awareness, like a dream, not the whole of who you are. This is not a denial of the pain, but a place to stand while it passes.
Bhāgavata 11.11.2. Krishna continues: grief, delusion, pleasure, pain and taking a body are all the work of māyā, like a dream.
vidyāvidye mama tanū viddhyuddhava śarīriṇām | mokṣabandhakarī ādye māyayā me vinirmite ||
Know, Uddhava, that knowledge and ignorance are my two forms for embodied beings. Primordial and fashioned by my māyā, the one brings liberation and the other bondage.
Meaning today and context
What frees us and what binds us is largely how we understand ourselves. Misunderstanding traps; clear seeing releases.
Bhāgavata 11.11.3. Krishna names knowledge and ignorance as two powers of his māyā, one freeing and one binding.
ekasyaiva mamāṃśasya jīvasyaiva mahāmate | bandho'syāvidyayānādirvidyayā ca tathetaraḥ ||
For the jīva, which is one and a portion of me, O wise one, bondage comes from ignorance and has no beginning; and in the same way the other, freedom, comes from knowledge.
Meaning today and context
No one can say when their confusion began, but it can still end. Understanding, not blame, is what changes things.
Bhāgavata 11.11.4. Krishna explains that the individual soul (jīva) is a portion of him, bound by beginningless ignorance and freed by knowledge.
atha baddhasya muktasya vailakṣaṇyaṃ vadāmi te | viruddhadharmiṇostāta sthitayorekadharmiṇi ||
Now I will tell you the difference between the bound and the free, dear one: two of opposite natures, though they dwell in one and the same body.
Meaning today and context
The part of us that is caught up and the part that simply sees live side by side. The teaching is about telling them apart.
Bhāgavata 11.11.5. Krishna introduces the difference between the bound and the free, two of opposite nature dwelling in the same body; the two-birds image follows.
Two birds, alike and companions, have by chance made their nest in the same tree. One of them eats the fruit of the pippala; the other, eating nothing, is still the greater in strength.
Meaning today and context
Part of us is always tasting life, sweet and bitter, and is pulled about by it. Another part only watches and is stronger for not grabbing. Both are in the same tree.
Bhāgavata 11.11.6. Krishna uses the image of two birds on one tree, also found in the Mundaka and Shvetashvatara Upanishads: the self who tastes experience and the Lord who only witnesses.
The one who does not eat the fruit, the knower, knows both himself and the other; the one who eats does not. The one joined to ignorance is ever bound; the one made of knowledge is ever free.
Meaning today and context
When we are busy grabbing at results we lose sight of ourselves. Stepping back, even for a moment, lets us see both the one who wants and the one who watches.
Bhāgavata 11.11.7. Krishna explains the two birds: the one who does not eat knows both; the eater does not. Ignorance binds, knowledge frees.
dehastho'pi na dehastho vidvānsvapnādyathotthitaḥ | adehastho'pi dehasthaḥ kumatiḥ svapnadṛgyathā ||
The wise one, though in the body, is not in the body, like one who has woken from a dream. The foolish one, though not in the body, is in the body, like one still seeing a dream.
This is about identity, not neglect: it is never a reason to stop caring for one's health, food or medical treatment.
Meaning today and context
Living in a body is not the problem; believing you are nothing but the body and its troubles is. You can care for your body and still not be imprisoned by it.
Bhāgavata 11.11.8. Krishna contrasts the wise and the confused using waking and dreaming.
indriyairindriyārtheṣu guṇairapi guṇeṣu ca | gṛhyamāṇeṣvahaṃ kuryānna vidvānyastvavikriyaḥ ||
When objects are grasped by the senses, guṇas engaging with guṇas, the wise one, who stays unchanged, does not think 'I am doing this'.
Meaning today and context
Much of what happens in us, hunger, irritation, a passing thought, is just the machinery working. Not taking every impulse as 'me' makes it easier to stay steady.
Bhāgavata 11.11.9. Krishna describes how the wise one sees action: senses meet their objects, guṇas meet guṇas, and he does not claim 'I am doing this'.
Living in this body, which is in the hands of destiny and moves by action born of the guṇas, the unwise one thinks 'I am the doer', and so is bound.
Meaning today and context
Thinking everything depends on me alone brings pride when things go well and crushing guilt when they don't. We do our part, but many forces shape the outcome.
Bhāgavata 11.11.10. The contrast: the unwise person, in a body driven by destiny and guṇa-born action, thinks 'I am the doer' and is bound.
So, detached, in lying down, sitting, walking and bathing, in seeing, touching, smelling, eating, hearing and the rest, the wise one is not bound as others are, letting the senses take their objects.
Meaning today and context
Freedom is not somewhere else; it is in how you eat, walk and listen today. Ordinary life lived without clinging is already the practice.
Bhāgavata 11.11.11. Krishna says the detached wise one goes through daily life, sleeping, sitting, walking, bathing, seeing, eating, without being bound.
Though placed in nature, he is unattached, like the sky, the sun and the wind. With clear vision sharpened by non-attachment, his doubts cut away, he turns back from multiplicity like one awakened from a dream.
Meaning today and context
Like the sky, which holds clouds and storms without being stained, you can let experiences pass through you. Non-attachment sharpens judgement rather than dulling it.
Bhāgavata 11.11.12–13 (merged in this e-text). The wise one lives in the world of nature yet stays unattached, like the sky, the sun and the wind, and turns away from the sense of multiplicity as from a dream.
yasya syurvītasaṅkalpāḥ prāṇendriyamanodhiyām | vṛttayaḥ sa vinirmukto dehastho'pi hi tadguṇaiḥ ||
He whose workings of breath, senses, mind and intellect are free of self-willed intention is released from the body's qualities, even while living in the body.
Meaning today and context
Freedom does not mean the mind stops; it means it stops running on constant 'I want, I must'. Acting without that inner pressure is a real kind of release.
Bhāgavata 11.11.14. Krishna describes the one who is free while still embodied: his breath, senses, mind and intellect work without self-centred intention.
Whether his body is hurt by violent people or, by chance, worshipped by someone somewhere, the wise one is not changed by it.
Inner steadiness is not a reason to stay where you are being harmed. If you face abuse or violence, get to safety and seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.
Meaning today and context
Being hurt or being praised does not have to decide who you are. Your worth is not set by how others treat you, good or bad.
Bhāgavata 11.11.15. Krishna says the wise one is not shaken whether his body is harmed by cruel people or, by chance, honoured by someone.
na stuvīta na nindeta kurvataḥ sādhvasādhu vā | vadato guṇadoṣābhyāṃ varjitaḥ samadṛṅmuniḥ ||
Whether others act or speak well or badly, the sage who sees all equally, free of judging merits and faults, neither praises nor condemns them.
Not judging others does not mean staying silent about harm, abuse or injustice; reporting wrongdoing is right.
Meaning today and context
Much of our energy goes into judging others, admiring some and running down others. Letting that habit drop brings quiet and frees attention for one's own work.
Bhāgavata 11.11.16. Krishna says the sage, seeing all equally, neither praises nor condemns others for what they do or say.
na kuryānna vadetkiñcinna dhyāyetsādhvasādhu vā | ātmārāmo'nayā vṛttyā vicarejjaḍavanmuniḥ ||
The sage should not do, say or dwell on anything as good or bad. Delighting in the Self, living in this way, he should wander as though he were dull.
This describes a renunciate sage. It is not advice to stop working, caring for family, making moral choices, or to withdraw from people.
Meaning today and context
For most people this points to an inner quiet: not needing to label everything, not needing to be seen as clever. It describes a renunciate's way of life, not a rule for daily work.
Bhāgavata 11.11.17. Krishna describes the conduct of a renunciate sage who rests in the Self and moves through the world as if dull.
If one is well versed in the scripture, the Word that is Brahman, but not immersed in the Supreme, his toil yields only toil, like a man tending a cow that gives no milk.
Meaning today and context
Knowing many texts, quotes and rituals is not the same as being changed by them. Learning that never reaches the heart is like caring for a cow that gives no milk.
Bhāgavata 11.11.18. Krishna warns that mastery of scripture without immersion in the Supreme is wasted effort.
gāṃ dugdhadohāmasatīṃ ca bhāryāṃ dehaṃ parādhīnamasatprajāṃ ca | vittaṃ tvatīrthīkṛtamaṅga vācaṃ hīnāṃ mayā rakṣati duḥkhaduḥkhī ||
Dear one, he who keeps a cow already milked dry, an unfaithful wife, a body dependent on others, wicked children, wealth never put to a worthy use, and speech empty of me, suffers sorrow upon sorrow.
The list reflects the household and social views of its time. 'Unfaithful wife' and 'wicked children' must never be used to blame, shame or control a wife or children; the verse's point is the futility of speech without God.
Meaning today and context
The point is the last item: words, and wealth, that serve nothing higher only weigh us down. Holding on to what gives no good is its own suffering.
Bhāgavata 11.11.19. Krishna lists things that only bring sorrow to the one who keeps them, ending with speech that has nothing of God in it.
yasyāṃ na me pāvanamaṅga karma sthityudbhavaprāṇanirodhamasya | līlāvatārepsitajanma vā syādvandhyāṃ giraṃ tāṃ bibhṛyānna dhīraḥ ||
Dear one, speech in which my purifying deeds do not appear, the creation, sustaining and dissolving of this world, or the births I chose in my playful descents, is barren; the steady-minded should not keep it.
Meaning today and context
What we read, say and listen to shapes us. Words that never point toward anything sacred or meaningful leave us emptier than before.
Bhāgavata 11.11.20. Krishna says the steady-minded should not hold on to speech that does not tell of his purifying deeds and incarnations.
evaṃ jijñāsayāpohya nānātvabhramamātmani | upārameta virajaṃ mano mayyarpya sarvage ||
In this way, having removed by inquiry the illusion of multiplicity in the Self, one should come to rest, offering the clear mind to me, who am everywhere.
Meaning today and context
Honest inquiry into who we are can dissolve a lot of inner division. When the mind clears, the next step is simply to rest it in something larger than oneself.
Bhāgavata 11.11.21. Krishna sums up the path of knowledge: by inquiry remove the illusion of separateness and rest the pure mind in him.
Full of faith, listening to my blessed stories that purify the world, singing them, remembering, and acting out my deeds and births again and again,
Meaning today and context
Hearing, singing and retelling sacred stories keeps them alive in us. Faith often grows through such simple, repeated acts.
Bhāgavata 11.11.23, continued in the next verse. Krishna describes the devotee who listens to, sings and remembers his stories.
Uddhava said: O Lord of glorious fame, what kind of person do you consider a true sādhu? And what kind of devotion to you, honoured by the good, should one practise?
Meaning today and context
A good question to ask of any path: what does a genuinely good person look like, and what does real devotion involve?
Bhāgavata 11.11.26. Uddhava asks Krishna what kind of person he considers a true sādhu, and what devotion the good honour.
The Lord said: Compassionate, harming no one, patient with all embodied beings, with truth as his strength, blameless in mind, even-minded, doing good to all,
Meaning today and context
A good person is not known by robes or rituals but by kindness, honesty, patience and helping others. These are qualities anyone can grow.
Bhāgavata 11.11.29. Krishna answers Uddhava's question by describing the qualities of a true sādhu, beginning with compassion and harmlessness.
his mind not overcome by desires, self-controlled, gentle, pure, owning nothing, free of grasping effort, eating in moderation, peaceful, steady, with me as his refuge, a sage;
कामनाएँ उसकी बुद्धि को नहीं डिगातीं; वह संयमी, कोमल, पवित्र, अकिंचन, निःस्पृह, मिताहारी, शांत, स्थिर, मेरी शरण में रहने वाला मुनि होता है;
'Owning nothing' and 'eating little' describe a renunciate ideal; they are not financial or dietary advice, and not a call to give up providing for one's family.
'अकिंचन' और 'मिताहार' संन्यासी आदर्श के वर्णन हैं; ये आर्थिक या आहार संबंधी सलाह नहीं, और परिवार का भरण-पोषण छोड़ने का आह्वान भी नहीं।
Meaning today and context
Gentleness, moderation and a mind not ruled by wants are signs of inner strength. They make a person easy to trust and steady in trouble.
Bhāgavata 11.11.30. Krishna continues the qualities of the sādhu: self-control, gentleness, simplicity, moderation, peace and refuge in him.
alert, deep of mind, resolute, master of the six [waves: hunger, thirst, grief, delusion, ageing and death, as the phrase is often read], free of pride and giving honour to others, capable, friendly, compassionate and wise.
Meaning today and context
Not needing respect, yet giving it freely, is one of the clearest marks of a good person. It makes others feel safe and valued.
Bhāgavata 11.11.31. Krishna completes the description of the sādhu: alert, deep, resolute, humble, honouring others, friendly and kind.
ājñāyaivaṃ guṇāndoṣānmayādiṣṭānapi svakān | dharmānsantyajya yaḥ sarvānmāṃ bhajeta sa tu sattamaḥ ||
Knowing the merits and faults [of duties] in this way, the one who gives up all his own duties, even those I have taught, and worships me, is the best of the good.
Giving up duties here means not clinging to ritual rules over love of God. It is not advice to abandon family, work, dependants or treatment.

Rules and roles matter, but love of God sits above them all. The verse is about where one's heart rests, not about dropping one's responsibilities.
Bhāgavata 11.11.32. Krishna says that the best of the good is the one who, understanding the merits and faults of duties, gives them all up and worships him alone; compare Gita 18.66.
jñātvājñātvātha ye vai māṃ yāvānyaścāsmi yādṛśaḥ | bhajantyananyabhāvena te me bhaktatamā matāḥ ||
Whether or not they know how great I am, who I am and what I am like, those who worship me with undivided feeling are, in my view, the best of devotees.

You do not need to be a scholar or have all the answers to love God. Sincerity matters more than theology.
Bhāgavata 11.11.33. Krishna says that whether or not they fully understand his nature, those who worship him with undivided love are his dearest devotees.
The sun, fire, brāhmaṇas, cows, the devotee of Vishnu, the sky, the wind, water, earth, one's own self and all beings, dear one, are the places where I am worshipped.
'Brāhmaṇa' here means one devoted to sacred learning and good conduct, not superiority by birth; the verse ends by naming all beings as places of worship.

God can be honoured everywhere: in nature, in animals, in people, in one's own self. Treating all of them with reverence is itself worship.
Bhāgavata 11.11.42. Krishna names the places where he can be worshipped, ending with all beings.
sūrye tu vidyayā trayyā haviṣāgnau yajeta mām | ātithyena tu viprāgrye goṣvaṅga yavasādinā ||
In the sun, one should worship me with the hymns of the three Vedas; in fire, with oblations; in the best of brāhmaṇas, with hospitality; and in cows, dear one, with grass and fodder;
सूर्य में त्रयी विद्या (तीनों वेदों के मंत्रों) से, अग्नि में हवि से, श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण में आतिथ्य से, और प्रिय, गौओं में घास-चारे आदि से मेरी पूजा करे;
Honouring learned people with hospitality is not a ranking of people by birth; caste words here mean conduct and learning, never birth.

Each form of worship fits its place: hospitality to a guest, food for an animal. Caring well for what is in front of you honours God.
Bhāgavata 11.11.43. Krishna begins explaining how to worship him in each of these places.
in the devotee of Vishnu, by honouring him as a kinsman; in the sky of the heart, by steady meditation; in the wind, by regarding it as the chief life-breath; in water, with offerings of water and the like;
वैष्णव में बंधु की तरह सत्कार करके, हृदय-आकाश में ध्यान-निष्ठा से, वायु में उसे मुख्य प्राण मानकर, और जल में जल आदि द्रव्यों से;

Treating fellow seekers as family, and the heart as a place to meet God in meditation, are both forms of worship.
Bhāgavata 11.11.44. Krishna continues: how to worship him in the devotee, the heart, the wind and water.
on the altar, with the essential mantras; in oneself, the Self, with what one enjoys; and in all beings, as the knower of the field, one should worship me by seeing them equally.

The highest worship in this list is to see the same presence in every being and treat everyone with equal respect.
Bhāgavata 11.11.45. Krishna completes the list: on the altar with mantras, in oneself with what one enjoys, and in all beings by seeing them equally.
Whoever worships me in this way, with a collected mind, through sacrifices and works of public good, gains true devotion to me; and through serving the good, remembrance of me.

Worship and public service go together. Digging a well or planting a garden for others, done with devotion, deepens faith.
Bhāgavata 11.11.47. Krishna says worship through sacrifice and public good works, together with service to the good, brings true devotion and remembrance of him.
Now, since you are listening, O joy of the Yadus, I will tell you this supreme secret, though it is to be closely guarded; for you are my servant, my well-wisher and my friend.

Deep teachings are shared where there is trust and love. The bond between teacher and student matters as much as the words.
Bhāgavata 11.11.49. Krishna, having finished, promises to reveal a deeper secret to Uddhava as his servant and friend; it begins in the next chapter, on the power of good company.
