Chapter 5 (Bhāgavata 11.10)

5.1 Krishna to Uddhava

mayoditeṣvavahitaḥ svadharmeṣu madāśrayaḥ | varṇāśramakulācāramakāmātmā samācaret ||

Attentive to the duties of one's own path that I have taught, taking refuge in me, one should carry out the conduct proper to one's station, stage of life and family, with a mind free of selfish desire.

Varṇa and āśrama here mean one's role, stage of life and responsibilities, never caste by birth; the verse must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Keep doing what your role and family ask of you, but without making it about what you will get. Devotion does not replace responsibility; it changes the spirit in which it is carried.

Bhagavata 11.10.1. Krishna begins a new teaching to Uddhava: how one who has taken refuge in him should carry out the duties he has described.

5.2 Krishna to Uddhava

anvīkṣeta viśuddhātmā dehināṃ viṣayātmanām | guṇeṣu tattvadhyānena sarvārambhaviparyayam ||

With a purified mind one should observe how, for embodied beings absorbed in sense objects, who take the products of the guṇas to be real, every undertaking ends in the opposite of what was sought.

Meaning today and context

Watch honestly what happens when you chase pleasure, status or possessions as if they would settle you: the result is often more restlessness, not less. Seeing this clearly is the beginning of freedom from it.

Bhagavata 11.10.2. Krishna tells Uddhava to look clearly at how the pursuits of people absorbed in sense objects turn out.

5.3 Krishna to Uddhava

suptasya viṣayāloko dhyāyato vā manorathaḥ | nānātmakatvādviphalastathā bhedātmadhīrguṇaiḥ ||

Just as the objects seen by one asleep, or the fancies of one lost in daydreaming, bear no fruit because they are made of many unreal things, so too the understanding that sees the self as divided, through the guṇas, is fruitless.

Meaning today and context

Much of what troubles us is built in the mind, like a dream: comparisons, imagined futures, the sense of being cut off from others. Recognising it as the mind's construction loosens its grip.

Bhagavata 11.10.3. Krishna compares the divided view of the self to dreams and daydreams.

5.4 Krishna to Uddhava

nivṛttaṃ karma seveta pravṛttaṃ matparastyajet | jijñāsāyāṃ sampravṛtto nādriyetkarmacodanām ||

Devoted to me, one should take up action that leads to withdrawal and give up action that drives one outward after desires. One who has fully entered into inquiry into the Self should not give much weight to the injunctions of ritual action.

Giving up action 'that drives one outward' is about inner orientation, not advice to stop working or abandon family and responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Choose the kind of activity that calms and clarifies over the kind that keeps feeding new wants. As understanding deepens, outer ritual matters less than inner inquiry.

Bhagavata 11.10.4. Krishna distinguishes action that turns one inward from action that drives one outward after results.

5.5 Krishna to Uddhava

yamānabhīkṣṇaṃ seveta niyamānmatparaḥ kvacit | madabhijñaṃ guruṃ śāntamupāsīta madātmakam ||

Devoted to me, one should keep the yamas (restraints such as non-violence and truthfulness) constantly, and the niyamas (observances) as far as one is able. One should serve a teacher who knows me, who is peaceful, and whose being is one with me.

A genuine teacher is known by peace and conduct; no teacher's demand for money, obedience or harm should be accepted on the strength of this verse.

Meaning today and context

Basic ethics, not harming, not lying, not taking what isn't yours, come first and are never optional; personal observances can flex with circumstance. Learn from someone whose calm and life show what they teach.

Bhagavata 11.10.5. Krishna gives the discipline of the seeker and tells him to serve a teacher who truly knows.

5.6 Krishna to Uddhava

amānyamatsaro dakṣo nirmamo dṛḍhasauhṛdaḥ | asatvaro'rthajijñāsuranasūyuramoghavāk ||

Free of pride and envy, capable, without possessiveness, firm in friendship, unhurried, eager to know the truth, free of fault-finding, never speaking idle words.

Meaning today and context

This is a good portrait of anyone who learns well: humble, steady in relationships, patient, genuinely curious, generous about others' faults, careful with words.

Bhagavata 11.10.6. Krishna lists the qualities of a good disciple.

5.7 Krishna to Uddhava

jāyāpatyagṛhakṣetra svajanadraviṇādiṣu | udāsīnaḥ samaṃ paśyansarveṣvarthamivātmanaḥ ||

Toward wife, children, house, land, relatives, wealth and the rest, he remains unattached, seeing the same Self in all of them as his own concern.

Detachment here is inner freedom from possessiveness, not neglect: it is never advice to withdraw care from a spouse, children or dependants.

Meaning today and context

You can care for your family and home fully while not making them the anchor of your identity. Loving without clutching, and seeing others' good as your own, is the balance meant here.

Bhagavata 11.10.7. Krishna continues describing the seeker's inner attitude toward family and possessions.

5.8 Krishna to Uddhava

vilakṣaṇaḥ sthūlasūkṣmāddehādātmekṣitā svadṛk | yathāgnirdāruṇo dāhyāddāhako'nyaḥ prakāśakaḥ ||

The Self, the seer, self-luminous, is different from the gross and the subtle body, just as fire, which burns and gives light, is different from the wood that it burns.

Meaning today and context

You are not only your body or your passing thoughts and moods; there is an awareness that sees them. Remembering this gives a steadier footing when the body or mind is struggling, and is never a reason to neglect either.

Bhagavata 11.10.8. Krishna teaches that the Self, the witness, is distinct from both the gross and subtle body, using the image of fire and wood.

5.9 Krishna to Uddhava

nirodhotpattyaṇubṛhannānātvaṃ tatkṛtānguṇān | antaḥ praviṣṭa ādhatta evaṃ dehaguṇānparaḥ ||

As fire, having entered the wood, takes on the qualities that the wood brings about, being put out and kindled, small and large, one and many, so the Supreme takes on the qualities of the body.

Meaning today and context

Birth, growth, illness and ageing belong to the body; we take them as happening to 'me'. Seeing the difference can make change and ageing less frightening.

Bhagavata 11.10.9. Continuing the image: fire seems to take on the features of the wood it enters, and the Self likewise seems to take on the body's features.

5.10 Krishna to Uddhava

yo'sau guṇairviracito deho'yaṃ puruṣasya hi | saṃsārastannibandho'yaṃ puṃso vidyā cchidātmanaḥ ||

This body, fashioned by the guṇas, belongs to the person; the round of birth and death is bound up with it. Knowledge of the Self is what cuts it.

Meaning today and context

What binds us is not the body itself but taking it to be all we are. Understanding, not force, is what releases that knot.

Bhagavata 11.10.10. Krishna names the body as the root of bondage and knowledge as what cuts it.

5.11 Krishna to Uddhava

tasmājjijñāsayātmānamātmasthaṃ kevalaṃ param | saṅgamya nirasedetadvastubuddhiṃ yathākramam ||

Therefore, through inquiry, approaching the Self that dwells in oneself, alone and supreme, one should step by step remove the notion that this [body and world] is the real thing.

Meaning today and context

Self-inquiry is gradual. Keep asking what in you stays the same through all changes, and let your sense of who you are rest more there than in roles and circumstances.

Bhagavata 11.10.11. Krishna draws the practical conclusion: inquire into the Self and gradually let go of taking the body-world as the final reality.

5.12 Krishna to Uddhava

ācāryo'raṇirādyaḥ syādantevāsyuttarāraṇiḥ | tatsandhānaṃ pravacanaṃ vidyāsandhiḥ sukhāvahaḥ ||

The teacher is the lower kindling-stick, the student the upper one; the teaching is the friction that joins them, and knowledge, the fire born of their meeting, brings happiness.

Meaning today and context

Real learning needs both sides: a teacher who gives and a student who engages. Understanding sparks in the meeting, not from either alone.

Bhagavata 11.10.12. Krishna compares the teacher and student to the two kindling sticks used to make the sacred fire.

5.13 Krishna to Uddhava

vaiśāradī sātiviśuddhabuddhirdhunoti māyāṃ guṇasamprasūtām | guṇāṃśca sandahya yadātmametatsvayaṃ ca śāmyatyasamidyathāgniḥ ||

That skilled and utterly pure understanding shakes off the māyā born of the guṇas; and having burnt up the guṇas of which this [world] is made, it itself becomes quiet, like a fire without fuel.

Meaning today and context

Clear understanding does its work and then lets go even of itself: no need to cling to being 'the one who knows'. What is left is quiet.

Bhagavata 11.10.13. Krishna describes how pure understanding removes illusion and then itself falls quiet. (E-text reads gunāṃś and śāṃyati; translated as guṇāṃś, śāmyati.)

5.14 Krishna to Uddhava

athaiṣāmkarmakartṝṇāṃ bhoktṝṇāṃ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ | nānātvamatha nityatvaṃ lokakālāgamātmanām ||

Now, suppose you hold that the doers of action, who experience pleasure and pain, are many, and that the worlds, time, scripture and selves are eternal,

Meaning today and context

Krishna takes a rival view seriously before answering it. Honest inquiry means stating the other side fairly first.

Bhagavata 11.10.14. Krishna begins stating an opposing view (that of ritualists who hold the self, worlds and scripture to be many and eternal) in order to answer it.

5.15 Krishna to Uddhava

manyase sarvabhāvānāṃ saṃsthā hyautpattikī yathā | tattadākṛtibhedena jāyate bhidyate ca dhīḥ ||

and you think that the existence of all things is natural and lasting, and that awareness arises and is divided according to the different shapes of each thing,

Meaning today and context

This sets up a question still asked today: is the world simply 'out there' and solid, with the mind just reacting to it? Krishna will answer that even on this view, nothing gives lasting security.

Bhagavata 11.10.15. The opposing view continues: things are as they are by nature, and knowledge varies with them.

5.16 Krishna to Uddhava

evamapyaṅga sarveṣāṃ dehināṃ dehayogataḥ | kālāvayavataḥ santi bhāvā janmādayo'sakṛt ||

Even so, my dear, for all embodied beings, because of their union with a body, states such as birth recur again and again, through the divisions of time.

Meaning today and context

Whatever your philosophy, having a body means birth, change, ageing and death keep coming. Any plan for happiness has to face that honestly.

Bhagavata 11.10.16. Krishna answers: even granting that view, embodied beings are still subject to birth, death and change.

5.17 Krishna to Uddhava

tatrāpi karmaṇāṃ karturasvātantryaṃ ca lakṣyate | bhoktuśca duḥkhasukhayoḥ ko nvartho vivaśaṃ bhajet ||

Even there, the doer of actions and the one who experiences pain and pleasure is plainly seen to be not free. What real good could come to one who is helpless?

Meaning today and context

We like to think we control our outcomes, but much is decided by forces beyond us. Seeing this can soften both anxiety and pride.

Bhagavata 11.10.17. Krishna points out that the supposed doer and enjoyer is not truly in control.

5.18 Krishna to Uddhava

na dehināṃ sukhaṃ kiñcidvidyate viduṣāmapi | tathā ca duḥkhaṃ mūḍhānāṃ vṛthāhaṅkaraṇaṃ param ||

No embodied being, not even the learned, has any happiness of his own making; nor is sorrow reserved for the foolish. The pride of being the doer is utterly vain.

Meaning today and context

Being clever or educated does not guarantee a happy life, and hardship is not proof that someone is foolish. That should keep us humble about our successes and gentle about others' troubles.

Bhagavata 11.10.18. Krishna observes that pleasure and pain do not follow cleverness or ignorance, so the pride of being the one who secures happiness is empty.

5.19 Krishna to Uddhava

Even if they know how to obtain pleasure and ward off pain, they surely do not know the way by which death would have no power over them.

This verse is about the Self and inner freedom, not an invitation to think about dying. If you are thinking of ending your life, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

We can become very good at managing comfort and avoiding discomfort and still have no answer to the biggest question: what about death? That question deserves time too.

Bhagavata 11.10.19. Krishna says even those skilled at getting pleasure and avoiding pain lack the one knowledge that matters.

5.20 Krishna to Uddhava

What object or pleasure can truly gladden a person when death stands near? Just as nothing satisfies a condemned man being led to the place of execution.

The image of death close at hand is meant to wake one up to what matters, not to frighten or depress. If you are thinking about death or ending your life, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Remembering that life is short puts our cravings in perspective: many things we chase lose their pull. It is a call to spend life on what lasts, not to give up on it.

Bhagavata 11.10.20. Krishna uses the image of a condemned man to show why pleasures cannot truly satisfy.

5.21 Krishna to Uddhava

śrutaṃ ca dṛṣṭavadduṣṭaṃ spardhāsūyātyayavyayaiḥ | bahvantarāyakāmatvātkṛṣivaccāpi niṣphalam ||

Pleasures heard of [in scripture, such as heaven] are as flawed as those seen here, by rivalry, envy, decline and loss; and since many obstacles stand in the way of what one desires, like farming they too may yield nothing.

Meaning today and context

Even the best rewards come packaged with comparison, envy and the fear of losing them. Knowing this, we can work for good things without expecting them to make us whole.

Bhagavata 11.10.21. Krishna turns to the heavenly rewards promised for ritual and shows they share the flaws of earthly pleasures.

5.22 Krishna to Uddhava

antarāyairavihito yadi dharmaḥ svanuṣṭhitaḥ | tenāpi nirjitaṃ sthānaṃ yathā gacchati tacchṛṇu ||

And if dharma is performed well and without obstacles, hear how even the realm won by it is lost again.

Good deeds done to earn a reward still leave you dependent on the reward. The point is not to stop doing good, but to stop treating it as a purchase.

Bhagavata 11.10.22. Krishna says that even dharma well performed, if done for heavenly reward, leads to a place that does not last; he begins to explain how.

5.23 Krishna to Uddhava

iṣṭveha devatā yajñaiḥ svarlokaṃ yāti yājñikaḥ | bhuñjīta devavattatra bhogāndivyānnijārjitān ||

Having worshipped the gods here with sacrifices, the sacrificer goes to the heavenly world, and there, like a god, he enjoys the divine pleasures he himself has earned.

Effort does bring results; the text grants that. The question it is building to is how long those results last.

Bhagavata 11.10.23. Krishna describes the ritualist's reward in heaven.

5.24 Krishna to Uddhava

svapuṇyopacite śubhre vimāna upagīyate | gandharvairviharanmadhye devīnāṃ hṛdyaveṣadhṛk ||

In a shining celestial chariot gathered by his own merit, he is sung to by gandharvas, and, wearing charming attire, he sports among the goddesses.

A picture of the most enviable life imaginable, painted only to show, in the next verses, that it too comes to an end.

Bhagavata 11.10.24. Description of the pleasures of heaven earned by ritual merit.

5.25 Krishna to Uddhava

strībhiḥ kāmagayānena kiṅkiṇījālamālinā | krīḍanna vedātmapātaṃ surākrīḍeṣu nirvṛtaḥ ||

Sporting with celestial women in a chariot that goes wherever he wishes, hung with nets of tinkling bells, content in the pleasure gardens of the gods, he does not know that his own fall is coming.

The celestial women are part of the picture of heavenly pleasure; the verse is about the enjoyer's own absorption and must never be read as demeaning women.

Meaning today and context

Absorbed in enjoyment, we rarely notice that it is running out. The point is the blindness that pleasure brings, not the pleasure itself.

Bhagavata 11.10.25. The heavenly enjoyer, absorbed in pleasure, does not see his coming fall.

5.26 Krishna to Uddhava

tāvatsa modate svarge yāvatpuṇyaṃ samāpyate | kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ patatyarvāganicchankālacālitaḥ ||

Every high built on effort or luck runs out: a promotion, praise, a winning streak. Enjoy it, but don't build your sense of self on it.

Bhagavata 11.10.26. Krishna states the end of every reward earned by merit.

5.27 Krishna to Uddhava

yadyadharmarataḥ saṅgādasatāṃ vājitendriyaḥ | kāmātmā kṛpaṇo lubdhaḥ straiṇo bhūtavihiṃsakaḥ ||

But if, through the company of the wicked, one delights in adharma, with senses uncontrolled, ruled by desire, miserly, greedy, given over to lust, a harmer of living beings,

'Given over to lust' (straiṇa) is about one's own craving; it must never be used to blame or demean women.

Meaning today and context

Bad company, unchecked impulses, greed and cruelty feed each other. Notice which of these you are slipping into and who around you encourages it.

Bhagavata 11.10.27. Krishna turns to the other path: one who lives by adharma. This verse lists the traits; the next gives the result.

5.28 Krishna to Uddhava

paśūnavidhinālabhya pretabhūtagaṇānyajan | narakānavaśo janturgatvā yātyulbaṇaṃ tamaḥ ||

killing animals against the rules and worshipping hosts of ghosts and spirits, such a creature goes helplessly to the hells and then into the deepest darkness.

Descriptions of hell are a warning about harmful conduct, not a threat to frighten anyone; for intense guilt or fear, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Cruelty and dark practices drag a person down, here and in what follows. Whatever one believes about hells, a life built on harm darkens the mind.

Bhagavata 11.10.28. Completing the previous verse: the fate of one who lives by harm and adharma.

5.29 Krishna to Uddhava

karmāṇi duḥkhodarkāṇi kurvandehena taiḥ punaḥ | dehamābhajate tatra kiṃ sukhaṃ martyadharmiṇaḥ ||

Doing with the body actions that end in sorrow, through those very actions he takes on a body again. What happiness is there, then, for a mortal?

Meaning today and context

Actions that cause pain tend to bring us back into the same situations again and again. Breaking a cycle means changing what we do, not just hoping for different results.

Bhagavata 11.10.29. Krishna sums up the cycle of action and rebirth.

5.30 Krishna to Uddhava

lokānāṃ lokapālānāṃ madbhayaṃ kalpajīvinām | brahmaṇo'pi bhayaṃ matto dviparārdhaparāyuṣaḥ ||

The worlds and their guardians, who live for an aeon, fear me; even Brahmā, whose life spans two parārdhas, fears me.

Meaning today and context

No position is high enough to escape time. That is humbling, and also a relief: everyone, however powerful, is in the same boat.

Bhagavata 11.10.30. Krishna, as Time, says that even the highest beings live in fear of him.

5.31 Krishna to Uddhava

guṇāḥ sṛjanti karmāṇi guṇo'nusṛjate guṇān | jīvastu guṇasaṃyukto bhuṅkte karmaphalānyasau ||

The guṇas produce actions; guṇa sets other guṇas in motion; and the individual soul, joined with the guṇas, experiences the fruits of action.

Meaning today and context

Much of what we do flows from our tendencies, energy, restlessness, inertia, more than from free choice. Seeing this gives room to step back instead of being swept along.

Bhagavata 11.10.31. Krishna explains that action and its fruits are the play of the guṇas.

5.32 Krishna to Uddhava

yāvatsyādguṇavaiṣamyaṃ tāvannānātvamātmanaḥ | nānātvamātmano yāvatpāratantryaṃ tadaiva hi ||

As long as the guṇas are out of balance, so long the self appears as many; and as long as the self appears as many, so long there is dependence.

Meaning today and context

When we feel fundamentally separate from everything, we feel at the mercy of everything. A deeper sense of oneness brings a kind of inner freedom.

Bhagavata 11.10.32. Krishna links the imbalance of the guṇas to the sense of many selves and to dependence.

5.33 Krishna to Uddhava

yāvadasyāsvatantratvaṃ tāvadīśvarato bhayam | ya etatsamupāsīraṃste muhyanti śucārpitāḥ ||

As long as one is not free, so long there is fear of the Lord as ruler. Those who cling to this [life of action for reward] are bewildered and given over to grief.

Meaning today and context

Faith built on fear of punishment or hope of reward keeps us anxious. Krishna points toward a freedom where God is not feared as a master but known as one's own.

Bhagavata 11.10.33. Krishna concludes the argument: dependence brings fear, and clinging to this way of life brings delusion and sorrow.

5.34 Krishna to Uddhava

kāla ātmāgamo lokaḥ svabhāvo dharma eva ca | iti māṃ bahudhā prāhurguṇavyatikare sati ||

When the guṇas are stirred, people speak of me in many ways: as Time, as the Self, as scripture, as the world, as nature, and as dharma.

Meaning today and context

Different traditions and thinkers name the ultimate cause differently. This verse invites us to see one reality behind the many names rather than quarrel over them.

Bhagavata 11.10.34. Krishna says the many explanations people give for the world are names for him.

5.35 Uddhava to Krishna

guṇeṣu vartamāno'pi dehajeṣvanapāvṛtaḥ | guṇairna badhyate dehī badhyate vā kathaṃ vibho ||

Though dwelling among the guṇas that arise from the body, how is the embodied one, uncovered by them, not bound by them? Or how is he bound, O Lord?

Meaning today and context

A real question for anyone trying to live wisely: how can I live in the middle of ordinary life without being trapped by it?

Bhagavata 11.10.35. Uddhava asks Krishna a question about bondage and freedom.

5.36 Uddhava to Krishna

kathaṃ varteta viharetkairvā jñāyeta lakṣaṇaiḥ | kiṃ bhuñjītota visṛjecchayītāsīta yāti vā ||

How would such a one live and move about? By what signs would he be known? What would he eat, what would he let go of, how would he lie down, sit or walk?

Meaning today and context

Uddhava wants to see freedom in daily life, not just in theory. It is a fair test of any teaching: how does it change the way one eats, rests and moves?

Bhagavata 11.10.36. Uddhava asks how a free person actually lives.

5.37 Uddhava to Krishna

etadacyuta me brūhi praśnaṃ praśnavidāṃ vara | nityabaddho nityamukta eka eveti me bhramaḥ ||

Tell me this, Acyuta, best of those who understand questions: that the one same self is ever bound and ever free, this is my confusion.

Meaning today and context

It is all right to bring a real confusion to someone wiser and say plainly 'this is what I don't understand'. Honest questions are where learning begins.

Bhagavata 11.10.37. Uddhava closes his question by naming his confusion: how can the one Self be both bound and free?
