Chapter 4 (Bhāgavata 11.9)

4.1 Avadhuta to Yadu

parigraho hi duḥkhāya yadyatpriyatamaṃ nṛṇām | anantaṃ sukhamāpnoti tadvidvānyastvakiñcanaḥ ||

Possessing brings sorrow, whatever is dearest to people. The one who knows this and holds nothing as his own attains endless happiness.

This is about clinging, not a rule to give away what you and your family need. For most people it means inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

The more tightly we clutch what we love most, the more it can hurt us. Holding things lightly, as not truly ours, frees us from much of the fear of losing them.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the lesson of the osprey begins. Holding on to what is dearest brings sorrow; the one who owns nothing is happy.

4.2 Avadhuta to Yadu

sāmiṣaṃ kuraraṃ jaghnurbalino'nye nirāmiṣāḥ | tadāmiṣaṃ parityajya sa sukhaṃ samavindata ||

Stronger birds that had no meat attacked an osprey carrying meat. When it let go of the meat, it found happiness.

Letting go of a quarrel is wise, but this is not advice to give up what you are rightfully owed under pressure or threat. For danger or extortion, call 112.

Meaning today and context

Sometimes the thing we are fighting to keep is exactly what draws attack and rivalry. Letting it go can end the struggle at once.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the osprey (kurara) carrying a piece of meat was attacked by stronger birds; when it dropped the meat, it was left in peace.

4.3 Avadhuta to Yadu

na me mānāpamānau sto na cintā gehaputriṇām | ātmakrīḍa ātmaratirvicarāmīha bālavat ||

Honour and dishonour are not mine, nor the worries of those with homes and children. Playing in the Self, delighting in the Self, I wander here like a child.

Not caring about honour is not a reason to neglect a family or children who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

A child does not carry around what others think of it. Finding joy within, rather than in praise or position, makes us light again.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the lesson of the child. He describes his own freedom from honour, dishonour and household worries.

4.4 Avadhuta to Yadu

dvāveva cintayā muktau paramānanda āplutau | yo vimugdho jaḍo bālo yo guṇebhyaḥ paraṃ gataḥ ||

Only two are free from worry and immersed in the highest joy: the innocent, unknowing child, and the one who has gone beyond the gunas.

Meaning today and context

Worry falls away either before we know much or after we see beyond it all. The child shows what freedom from worry looks like; wisdom is how an adult gets there.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): he explains why he takes the child as a teacher.

4.5 Avadhuta to Yadu

kvacitkumārī tvātmānaṃ vṛṇānāngṛhamāgatān | svayaṃ tānarhayāmāsa kvāpi yāteṣu bandhuṣu ||

Once, when her relatives had gone somewhere, a young maiden herself received the men who had come to the house to ask for her hand.

Meaning today and context

The story sets up a simple scene from daily life, from which the Avadhuta will draw a lesson.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the story of the maiden begins. Her family was away when suitors came to see her.

4.6 Avadhuta to Yadu

teṣāmabhyavahārārthaṃ śālīnrahasi pārthiva | avaghnantyāḥ prakoṣṭhasthāścakruḥ śaṅkhāḥ svanaṃ mahat ||

To make a meal for them, O king, she was pounding rice in private, and the conch-shell bangles on her forearms made a loud clatter.

Meaning today and context

Part of the maiden's story.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the maiden prepares food for the guests.

4.7 Avadhuta to Yadu

sā tajjugupsitaṃ matvā mahatī vrīḍitā tataḥ | babhañjaikaikaśaḥ śaṅkhāndvau dvau pāṇyoraśeṣayat ||

Thinking this embarrassing, and deeply ashamed, she broke the bangles one by one, leaving just two on each wrist.

Meaning today and context

Part of the maiden's story.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the maiden, ashamed that the guests would hear her doing the work herself, breaks her bangles.

4.8 Avadhuta to Yadu

ubhayorapyabhūdghoṣo hyavaghnantyāḥ svaśaṅkhayoḥ | tatrāpyekaṃ nirabhidadekasmānnābhavaddhvaniḥ ||

Even from the two bangles there was a sound as she pounded, so she broke one more on each wrist; from a single one, no sound came.

Meaning today and context

Part of the maiden's story; the single silent bangle is the lesson that follows.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): even two bangles make a sound, so she keeps only one.

4.9 Avadhuta to Yadu

anvaśikṣamimaṃ tasyā upadeśamarindama | lokānanucarannetānlokatattvavivitsayā ||

I learned this lesson from her, O subduer of foes, as I wandered through these worlds wanting to know the truth of the world.

Meaning today and context

Lessons can come from anyone, even someone who does not know she is teaching. A curious, open mind turns ordinary events into teachers.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): he says he took the maiden's bangles as a teacher.

4.10 Avadhuta to Yadu

vāse bahūnāṃ kalaho bhavedvārtā dvayorapi | eka eva vasettasmātkumāryā iva kaṅkaṇaḥ ||

Where many live together there will be quarrels; even between two there will be chatter. So one should live alone, like the maiden's single bangle.

This is the counsel for a wandering ascetic. It is not advice to cut off family or friends; isolation and loneliness can harm. If you feel alone and low, reach out, or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Crowds and constant talk scatter the mind. Even within a busy life, regular time alone and in quiet lets us hear ourselves think.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the maiden's lesson. Where many live together there is friction; the seeker should live alone, like the single bangle.

4.11 Avadhuta to Yadu

mana ekatra saṃyuñjyājjitaśvāso jitāsanaḥ | vairāgyābhyāsayogena dhriyamāṇamatandritaḥ ||

Having mastered the breath and the posture, one should fix the mind on a single point, holding it there tirelessly through dispassion and steady practice.

Breath and posture practice should be learned from a qualified teacher; never hold the breath forcibly, and stop if there is pain or dizziness. Not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Focus is built, not wished for: a steady body, a settled breath, and coming back again and again without giving up.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): from the same lesson, he turns to meditation: fixing the mind on one point.

4.12 Avadhuta to Yadu

yasminmano labdhapadaṃ yadetacchanaiḥ śanairmuñcati karmareṇūn | sattvena vṛddhena rajastamaśca vidhūya nirvāṇamupaityanindhanam ||

When the mind finds its footing in Him, it slowly sheds the dust of past action. With sattva grown strong, it shakes off rajas and tamas and reaches stillness, like a fire with no fuel.

Meaning today and context

Old habits and agitations don't vanish overnight; they wear away slowly as the mind rests in something steady. Peace comes when the fuel of restlessness runs out.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): he describes what happens when the mind settles in the Lord.

4.13 Avadhuta to Yadu

tadaivamātmanyavaruddhacitto na veda kiñcidbahirantaraṃ vā | yatheṣukāro nṛpatiṃ vrajantamiṣau gatātmā na dadarśa pārśve ||

Then, with the mind held within the Self, one is aware of nothing outside or inside, just as the arrow-maker, absorbed in his arrow, did not see the king going past beside him.

Meaning today and context

Complete absorption in one task is rare and precious. When attention is whole, distractions, even big ones, simply fall away.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the lesson of the arrow-maker, so absorbed in his arrow that he did not notice the king passing by.

4.14 Avadhuta to Yadu

ekacāryaniketaḥ syādapramatto guhāśayaḥ | alakṣyamāṇa ācārairmunireko'lpabhāṣaṇaḥ ||

The sage should wander alone, without a fixed home, watchful, keeping to hidden places, not recognised by outward signs, solitary and speaking little.

This describes a wandering renunciate's life. It is not advice to leave home, family or work; for most people it means inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

Not needing to be seen, speaking little and staying alert protect the mind's quiet. Anyone can practise speaking less and not advertising oneself.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the lesson of the snake. The sage lives alone, without a fixed home, unnoticed.

4.15 Avadhuta to Yadu

gṛhārambho hi duḥkhāya viphalaścādhruvātmanaḥ | sarpaḥ parakṛtaṃ veśma praviśya sukhamedhate ||

Building a house brings sorrow, and for one whose body does not last it is fruitless. The snake enters a home made by others and lives there happily.

This is the renunciate's view. It is not advice against providing a home for your family, or financial advice.

Meaning today and context

We can pour our whole lives into building and securing things that will outlast us anyway. It helps to remember that every home is, in the end, borrowed.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the snake does not build a home; it lives in holes made by others.

4.16 Avadhuta to Yadu

eko nārāyaṇo devaḥ pūrvasṛṣṭaṃ svamāyayā | saṃhṛtya kālakalayā kalpānta idamīśvaraḥ | eka evādvitīyo'bhūdātmādhāro'khilāśrayaḥ ||

The one God Narayana, the Lord, at the end of a cosmic age withdraws by the motion of time this universe he had earlier created by his own power of maya, and remains one alone, without a second, his own support and the refuge of all.

Meaning today and context

Everything we see has a beginning and an end, but the ground it rises from remains. Trusting that ground can steady us when things fall apart.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the lesson of the spider begins with how the Lord withdraws the universe at the end of an age.

4.17 Avadhuta to Yadu

kālenātmānubhāvena sāmyaṃ nītāsu śaktiṣu | sattvādiṣvādipuruṣaḥ pradhānapuruṣeśvaraḥ ||

When, by time, which is his own power, the forces of sattva and the rest are brought into balance, the original Person, lord of nature and of the souls...

Meaning today and context

This verse continues into the next: behind the play of nature's forces there is one Lord who is never lost in them.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): continuing the account of dissolution.

4.18 Avadhuta to Yadu

parāvarāṇāṃ parama āste kaivalyasaṃjñitaḥ | kevalānubhavānanda sandoho nirupādhikaḥ ||

...remains, highest of the high and the low, called kaivalya, the One alone: a fullness of the bliss of pure experience, free of all limiting conditions.

Meaning today and context

Beneath all forms and roles there is a pure awareness that is complete in itself. Glimpsing it, even briefly, can loosen our identification with labels.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): completing the sentence of the previous verse.

4.19 Avadhuta to Yadu

kevalātmānubhāvena svamāyāṃ triguṇātmikām | saṅkṣobhayansṛjatyādau tayā sūtramarindama ||

By the power of his own pure Self, stirring his own maya made of the three gunas, he first brings forth from it the thread (sutra), O subduer of foes.

Meaning today and context

The text pictures creation as a thread drawn out of the Lord's own power. Everything that unfolds, including us, hangs on that one thread.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the account of creation begins again from the Lord.

4.20 Avadhuta to Yadu

tāmāhustriguṇavyaktiṃ sṛjantīṃ viśvatomukham | yasminprotamidaṃ viśvaṃ yena saṃsarate pumān ||

They call it the manifestation of the three gunas, which brings forth the world facing every direction; on it this universe is strung, and by it the person wanders from birth to birth.

Meaning today and context

The same power that makes the world also keeps us cycling through it. Seeing that is the first step to not being pulled along blindly.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): he describes the 'thread' of creation.

4.21 Avadhuta to Yadu

yathorṇanābhirhṛdayādūrṇāṃ santatya vaktrataḥ | tayā vihṛtya bhūyastāṃ grasatyevaṃ maheśvaraḥ ||

As the spider draws out thread from its heart through its mouth, spreads it, plays in it, and swallows it again, so does the great Lord.

Meaning today and context

A spider is never lost in its web; it makes it and takes it back. The image invites us to see the world as arising from and returning to one source.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the spider's lesson stated: as the spider spins and withdraws its web, so the Lord creates and withdraws the world.

4.22 Avadhuta to Yadu

yatra yatra mano dehī dhārayetsakalaṃ dhiyā | snehāddveṣādbhayādvāpi yāti tattatsvarūpatām ||

Whatever the embodied being fixes its whole mind on with full attention, whether out of love, hatred or fear, it comes to take on that very form.

Meaning today and context

What we think about constantly shapes who we become, and hatred or fear shapes us as surely as love. Choose carefully what you let fill your mind.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the lesson of the wasp. We become what we dwell on.

4.23 Avadhuta to Yadu

kīṭaḥ peśaskṛtaṃ dhyāyankuḍyāṃ tena praveśitaḥ | yāti tatsātmatāṃ rājanpūrvarūpamasantyajan ||

An insect shut into a mud nest on the wall by the wasp, constantly thinking of the wasp, comes to share its nature, O king, without giving up its former body.

Meaning today and context

This is an old belief about wasps, used as a picture: steady contemplation transforms us. Even in this life, what we keep our attention on remakes us.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the traditional belief that a wasp shuts an insect in its mud nest, and the insect, thinking only of the wasp, becomes a wasp.

4.24 Avadhuta to Yadu

evaṃ gurubhya etebhya eṣā me śikṣitā matiḥ | svātmopaśikṣitāṃ buddhiṃ śṛṇu me vadataḥ prabho ||

Thus I learned this understanding from these teachers. Now hear from me, my lord, the wisdom I learned from my own self.

After learning from the world around us, the last teacher is our own life and body. Honest reflection on ourselves teaches what no one else can.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): having listed his teachers from nature, he turns to the teacher he found in his own body.

4.25 Avadhuta to Yadu

deho gururmama viraktivivekahetur | bibhratsma sattvanidhanaṃ satatārtyudarkam | tattvānyanena vimṛśāmi yathā tathāpi | pārakyamityavasito vicarāmyasaṅgaḥ ||

The body is my teacher, the cause of my dispassion and discernment. It is subject to birth and death, and pain is its constant outcome. With it I reflect on the truths; yet, knowing it belongs to others, I wander unattached.

This is about not identifying with the body, not about neglecting or disliking it. Look after your health. If you feel contempt for your body or have thoughts of self-harm, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Our body ageing and hurting teaches us what is passing. We can use it well and care for it, while not mistaking it for all that we are.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the body as his teacher. It shows birth, decay and pain, and is useful for inquiry, yet it is not truly his own.

4.26 Avadhuta to Yadu

jāyātmajārthapaśubhṛtyagṛhāptavargān | puṣṇāti yatpriyacikīrṣayā vitanvan | svānte sakṛcchramavaruddhadhanaḥ sa dehaḥ | sṛṣṭvāsya bījamavasīdati vṛkṣadharmaḥ ||

To please wife, children, wealth, cattle, servants, house and kin, a person nourishes and expands them, gathering wealth with hardship. At the end that body perishes, like a tree that falls after leaving the seed of a new one.

Caring for family and dependants is a duty and a good. The verse does not ask anyone to abandon them; it is about not losing oneself in it.

Meaning today and context

We spend our lives building and providing, and the body still wears out. This is not a reason to stop caring for others, but to remember what lasts while we do.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): why the body teaches dispassion: one toils all life for others through it, and it falls like a tree.

4.27 Avadhuta to Yadu

jihvaikato'mumapakarṣati karhi tarṣā | śiśno'nyatastvagudaraṃ śravaṇaṃ kutaścit | ghrāṇo'nyataścapaladṛkkva ca karmaśaktir | bahvyaḥ sapatnya iva gehapatiṃ lunanti ||

The tongue drags him one way, thirst another; the sex organ another, and skin, belly and ears elsewhere; the nose one way, the restless eye another, and the powers of action yet another. Like many co-wives, they tear at the master of the house.

The co-wives image is a simile from its time about one's own cravings; it is not a statement about women.

Meaning today and context

Every craving pulls in its own direction, and trying to satisfy all of them leaves us torn and exhausted. Noticing this pull is the first step to mastering it.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): the senses pull a person in every direction, like many co-wives tugging at one husband.

4.28 Avadhuta to Yadu

sṛṣṭvā purāṇi vividhānyajayātmaśaktyā | vṛkṣānsarīsṛpapaśūnkhagadandaśūkān | taistairatuṣṭahṛdayaḥ puruṣaṃ vidhāya | brahmāvalokadhiṣaṇaṃ mudamāpa devaḥ ||

The Lord, having created many kinds of bodies by his own unborn power, trees, reptiles, beasts, birds and stinging creatures, was not satisfied in heart with them; then he made the human being, with an understanding able to see Brahman, and rejoiced.

4.29 Avadhuta to Yadu

labdhvā sudurlabhamidaṃ bahusambhavānte | mānuṣyamarthadamanityamapīha dhīraḥ | tūrṇaṃ yateta na patedanumṛtyu yāvan | niḥśreyasāya viṣayaḥ khalu sarvataḥ syāt ||

Having gained, after many births, this human life, so hard to obtain, which can bring the highest goal though it does not last, the wise person should strive quickly for the supreme good before death overtakes him. Sense pleasures are available in every kind of life.

This is about not wasting life, never a reason to fear or welcome death. If thoughts of death trouble you, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Comfort and pleasure are found everywhere; what human life uniquely offers is the chance to grow in understanding. Don't postpone what matters most.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): since human birth is rare, one should strive for the highest good now, before death comes.

evaṃ sañjātavairāgyo vijñānāloka ātmani | vicarāmi mahīmetāṃ muktasaṅgo'nahaṅkṛtaḥ ||

So, with dispassion born in me and the light of knowledge in my Self, I wander this earth free of attachment and without ego.

Meaning today and context

Lessons learned from life add up to a lighter way of being: less clinging, less self-importance, more clarity.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): he sums up the result of all these lessons in his own life.

4.31 Avadhuta to Yadu

na hyekasmādgurorjñānaṃ susthiraṃ syātsupuṣkalam | brahmaitadadvitīyaṃ vai gīyate bahudharṣibhiḥ ||

Knowledge from only one teacher does not become firm and full. This Brahman, one without a second, is sung by the seers in many ways.

Learning from many sources makes understanding broad and steady. The truth is one, but people and traditions express it in many ways.

The Avadhuta tells King Yadu (Krishna narrating to Uddhava): his last word. Knowledge from a single teacher is not enough; the one truth is taught in many ways.

ityuktvā sa yaduṃ viprastamāmantrya gabhīradhīḥ | vanditaḥ svarcito rājñā yayau prīto yathāgatam ||

Having said this, the brahmin of deep understanding bade farewell to Yadu. Saluted and honoured by the king, he went away content, just as he had come.
