Chapter 3 (Bhāgavata 11.8)

3.1 Avadhuta to Yadu

सुखमैन्द्रियकं राजन्स्वर्गे नरक एव च । देहिनां यद्यथा दुःखं तस्मान्नेच्छेत तद्बुधः ॥

sukhamaindriyakaṃ rājansvarge naraka eva ca | dehināṃ yadyathā duḥkhaṃ tasmānneccheta tadbudhaḥ ||

O King, the pleasure of the senses comes to embodied beings in heaven and in hell alike, just as pain does, unsought. Knowing this, the wise do not crave it.

हे राजन्, इंद्रियों का सुख देहधारियों को स्वर्ग में भी मिलता है और नरक में भी, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे दुःख बिना माँगे आता है। इसलिए बुद्धिमान उसकी कामना नहीं करता।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Pleasant moments come on their own, like painful ones, whatever our circumstances. Spending life chasing them is wasted effort; the energy is better given to what lasts.

सुखद पल अपने आप आते हैं, दुखद पलों की तरह, हालात चाहे जैसे हों। उनके पीछे जीवन भर भागना व्यर्थ श्रम है; वह ऊर्जा किसी स्थायी चीज़ में लगाना बेहतर है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. Beginning a new set of teachers, he says pleasure and pain both come unsought, so the wise do not chase sense-pleasure.

3.2 Avadhuta to Yadu

ग्रासं सुमृष्टं विरसं महान्तं स्तोकमेव वा । यदृच्छयैवापतितं ग्रसेदाजगरोऽक्रियः ॥

grāsaṃ sumṛṣṭaṃ virasaṃ mahāntaṃ stokameva vā | yadṛcchayaivāpatitaṃ grasedājagaro'kriyaḥ ||

Like the python that does not hunt, one should eat whatever food comes by chance, whether tasty or tasteless, much or little.

अजगर की तरह, जो शिकार नहीं करता, मनुष्य को संयोग से जो भी भोजन मिल जाए, स्वादिष्ट हो या फीका, अधिक हो या थोड़ा, उसे खा लेना चाहिए।

Written for a renunciate. It is about contentment, not about passivity in work or neglecting one's needs or health.

यह संन्यासी के लिए कहा गया है। यह संतोष के बारे में है, काम में निष्क्रियता या अपनी ज़रूरतों और स्वास्थ्य की उपेक्षा के बारे में नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Not every meal or comfort has to match our preferences. Accepting what comes without fuss frees a great deal of attention and spares us constant complaint.

हर भोजन या सुविधा हमारी पसंद के अनुसार हो, यह ज़रूरी नहीं। बिना शिकायत जो मिले उसे स्वीकार करना बहुत सा ध्यान मुक्त करता है और लगातार शिकायत से बचाता है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. His teacher here is the python (ajagara), which eats whatever comes to it without striving.

3.3 Avadhuta to Yadu

शयीताहानि भूरीणि निराहारोऽनुपक्रमः । यदि नोपनयेद्ग्रासो महाहिरिव दिष्टभुक् ॥

śayītāhāni bhūrīṇi nirāhāro'nupakramaḥ | yadi nopanayedgrāso mahāhiriva diṣṭabhuk ||

If no food comes, he should lie for many days without eating and without effort, like the great snake, living on what fate allots.

यदि भोजन न आए तो वह बड़े अजगर की तरह, भाग्य से मिले पर निर्भर रहते हुए, बिना प्रयास और बिना आहार के कई दिनों तक पड़ा रहे।

Not dietary or medical advice. Fasting or going without food can harm health; anyone with an eating disorder or a medical condition should not take this literally. Tele-MANAS 14416 for help.

यह आहार या चिकित्सा सलाह नहीं है। उपवास या भोजन न करना स्वास्थ्य को हानि पहुँचा सकता है; खान-पान संबंधी विकार या किसी रोग से ग्रस्त व्यक्ति इसे शब्दशः न लें। सहायता के लिए टेली-मानस 14416।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

The point is not to stop eating but to stop being anxious about what one will get. A mind that trusts and waits is freer than one that grasps.

बात खाना छोड़ने की नहीं, बल्कि इस चिंता को छोड़ने की है कि क्या मिलेगा। जो मन भरोसा रखकर प्रतीक्षा करता है, वह पकड़ने वाले मन से अधिक स्वतंत्र है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He continues the python's lesson: if no food comes, the sage waits without striving.

3.4 Avadhuta to Yadu

ओजःसहोबलयुतं बिभ्रद्देहमकर्मकम् । शयानो वीतनिद्रश्च नेहेतेन्द्रियवानपि ॥

ojaḥsahobalayutaṃ bibhraddehamakarmakam | śayāno vītanidraśca nehetendriyavānapi ||

Though his body has vigour, endurance and strength, he should remain inactive; lying down, yet wakeful, he should not strive, though he has senses.

शरीर में ओज, सहनशक्ति और बल होते हुए भी वह कर्महीन रहे; लेटा हुआ भी जागरूक रहे, और इंद्रियाँ होते हुए भी (भोगों के लिए) चेष्टा न करे।

Meant for a renunciate's inner stillness; not advice to give up work, duties or exercise.

यह संन्यासी की भीतरी स्थिरता के लिए है; काम, कर्तव्य या व्यायाम छोड़ने की सलाह नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Having the power to chase things does not mean we must. Stillness with alertness, rather than restless striving, is the quality being praised.

किसी चीज़ के पीछे भागने की शक्ति होने का अर्थ यह नहीं कि भागना ही है। यहाँ बेचैन दौड़-धूप की जगह सजग स्थिरता की प्रशंसा है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He finishes the python's lesson: strong in body, the sage stays still and without restless activity.

3.5 Avadhuta to Yadu

मुनिः प्रसन्नगम्भीरो दुर्विगाह्यो दुरत्ययः । अनन्तपारो ह्यक्षोभ्यः स्तिमितोद इवार्णवः ॥

muniḥ prasannagambhīro durvigāhyo duratyayaḥ | anantapāro hyakṣobhyaḥ stimitoda ivārṇavaḥ ||

The sage is serene and deep, hard to fathom, impossible to overstep, boundless and unshakeable, like the ocean whose waters are still.

मुनि प्रसन्न और गंभीर होता है, उसकी थाह पाना कठिन है, उसे लाँघा नहीं जा सकता; वह असीम और अक्षोभ्य है, शांत जल वाले समुद्र की तरह।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

A deep person is not stirred up by every wave of news, criticism or praise. Depth of character shows as calm that others cannot easily disturb.

गहरा व्यक्ति हर खबर, आलोचना या प्रशंसा की लहर से विचलित नहीं होता। चरित्र की गहराई ऐसी शांति के रूप में दिखती है जिसे दूसरे आसानी से भंग नहीं कर सकते।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. His next teacher is the ocean, deep and undisturbed.

3.6 Avadhuta to Yadu

समृद्धकामो हीनो वा नारायणपरो मुनिः । नोत्सर्पेत न शुष्येत सरिद्भिरिव सागरः ॥

samṛddhakāmo hīno vā nārāyaṇaparo muniḥ | notsarpeta na śuṣyeta saridbhiriva sāgaraḥ ||

Whether his desires are fulfilled or he is in want, the sage devoted to Narayana neither swells nor dries up, as the ocean does not, though rivers flow into it or not.

इच्छाएँ पूरी हों या अभाव हो, नारायण-परायण मुनि न तो फूलता है न सूखता है, जैसे नदियों के आने न आने से समुद्र न बढ़ता है न घटता है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Success and loss will come. A person rooted in something deeper, for a devotee in God, does not inflate in good times or collapse in bad ones.

सफलता और हानि आती रहेंगी। जो किसी गहरी चीज़ में, भक्त के लिए ईश्वर में, जड़ा है, वह अच्छे समय में फूलता नहीं और बुरे समय में टूटता नहीं।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He continues the ocean's lesson: it neither swells nor shrinks with the rivers.

3.7 Avadhuta to Yadu

दृष्ट्वा स्त्रियं देवमायां तद्भावैरजितेन्द्रियः । प्रलोभितः पतत्यन्धे तमस्यग्नौ पतङ्गवत् ॥

dṛṣṭvā striyaṃ devamāyāṃ tadbhāvairajitendriyaḥ | pralobhitaḥ patatyandhe tamasyagnau pataṅgavat ||

Seeing a woman, the Lord's own maya, a man who has not mastered his senses is lured by her charms and falls into blind darkness, like a moth into fire.

जिसने इंद्रियों को नहीं जीता, वह पुरुष भगवान की माया रूपी स्त्री को देखकर उसके हाव-भाव से लुभा जाता है और अंधे अंधकार में गिरता है, जैसे पतंगा आग में।

This verse is addressed to a male renunciate and reflects the renunciate viewpoint of its time. It is about one's own craving, and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

यह श्लोक पुरुष संन्यासी को संबोधित है और अपने समय के संन्यासी दृष्टिकोण को दर्शाता है। यह अपनी ही लालसा के बारे में है; इसे स्त्रियों को दोष देने, नीचा दिखाने या नियंत्रित करने के लिए कभी प्रयोग न करें।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

The real teaching is about the moth: being pulled helplessly by what dazzles us, without seeing the cost. The fault lies in one's own uncontrolled craving.

असली सीख पतंगे की है: जो चमकता है उसकी ओर बेबस खिंच जाना, कीमत देखे बिना। दोष अपनी ही अनियंत्रित लालसा का है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. His next teacher is the moth that flies into the flame; here it is applied to a man's attraction to a woman.

3.8 Avadhuta to Yadu

योषिद्धिरण्याभरणाम्बरादि द्रव्येषु मायारचितेषु मूढः । प्रलोभितात्मा ह्युपभोगबुद्ध्या पतङ्गवन्नश्यति नष्टदृष्टिः ॥

yoṣiddhiraṇyābharaṇāmbarādi dravyeṣu māyāraciteṣu mūḍhaḥ | pralobhitātmā hyupabhogabuddhyā pataṅgavannaśyati naṣṭadṛṣṭiḥ ||

A deluded man, his mind lured by women, gold, ornaments, clothes and other things fashioned by maya, thinking them for his enjoyment, loses his sight and perishes like the moth.

स्त्री, सोना, आभूषण, वस्त्र आदि माया से रचे पदार्थों में मूढ़ मनुष्य, भोग की बुद्धि से लुभाया हुआ, विवेक-दृष्टि खोकर पतंगे की तरह नष्ट हो जाता है।

This verse is addressed to a male renunciate and reflects the renunciate viewpoint of its time. It is about one's own craving, and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

यह श्लोक पुरुष संन्यासी को संबोधित है और अपने समय के संन्यासी दृष्टिकोण को दर्शाता है। यह अपनी ही लालसा के बारे में है; इसे स्त्रियों को दोष देने, नीचा दिखाने या नियंत्रित करने के लिए कभी प्रयोग न करें।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Glitter, possessions and the promise of pleasure can blind us, the way a flame blinds a moth. Noticing the pull before acting on it is the beginning of freedom.

चमक-दमक, वस्तुएँ और सुख का वादा हमें वैसे ही अंधा कर सकते हैं जैसे लौ पतंगे को। उस खिंचाव को काम करने से पहले पहचान लेना ही मुक्ति की शुरुआत है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He continues the moth's lesson, widening it to gold, ornaments and clothes.

3.9 Avadhuta to Yadu

स्तोकं स्तोकं ग्रसेद्ग्रासं देहो वर्तेत यावता । गृहानहिंसन्नातिष्ठेद्वृत्तिं माधुकरीं मुनिः ॥

stokaṃ stokaṃ grasedgrāsaṃ deho varteta yāvatā | gṛhānahiṃsannātiṣṭhedvṛttiṃ mādhukarīṃ muniḥ ||

The sage should take food little by little, just enough to sustain the body; going from house to house without burdening any, he should live by the bee's way of gathering.

मुनि थोड़ा-थोड़ा भोजन ग्रहण करे, बस उतना जितने से शरीर चल जाए; किसी घर को कष्ट दिए बिना वह मधुमक्खी जैसी (माधुकरी) वृत्ति से जीवन चलाए।

Written for a wandering renunciate. For a householder it means freedom from hoarding and greed, not abandoning savings, family or responsibilities.

यह विचरण करने वाले संन्यासी के लिए कहा गया है। गृहस्थ के लिए इसका अर्थ संग्रह और लोभ से मुक्ति है, बचत, परिवार या ज़िम्मेदारियाँ छोड़ना नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Take what you need without being a burden to others. Moderation and lightness in what we take from the world is a quiet kind of non-harm.

उतना ही लो जितना चाहिए, और दूसरों पर बोझ मत बनो। दुनिया से लेने में संयम और हल्कापन अहिंसा का ही एक शांत रूप है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. His next teacher is the bee, which takes a little from many flowers.

3.10 Avadhuta to Yadu

अणुभ्यश्च महद्भ्यश्च शास्त्रेभ्यः कुशलो नरः । सर्वतः सारमादद्यात्पुष्पेभ्य इव षट्पदः ॥

aṇubhyaśca mahadbhyaśca śāstrebhyaḥ kuśalo naraḥ | sarvataḥ sāramādadyātpuṣpebhya iva ṣaṭpadaḥ ||

A wise person should take the essence from all scriptures, small and great, as the bee takes from flowers.

कुशल मनुष्य छोटे-बड़े सभी शास्त्रों से सार ग्रहण करे, जैसे भौंरा फूलों से (रस लेता है)।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Learn from every source, big or small, without becoming a partisan of any one. Take what is true and useful and leave the rest.

हर स्रोत से सीखो, छोटा हो या बड़ा, किसी एक का कट्टर पक्षधर बने बिना। जो सच्चा और उपयोगी है वह ले लो, बाकी छोड़ दो।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He draws a second lesson from the bee: gathering the essence from everywhere.

3.11 Avadhuta to Yadu

सायन्तनं श्वस्तनं वा न सङ्गृह्णीत भिक्षितम् । पाणिपात्रोदरामत्रो मक्षिकेव न सङ्ग्रही ॥

sāyantanaṃ śvastanaṃ vā na saṅgṛhṇīta bhikṣitam | pāṇipātrodarāmatro makṣikeva na saṅgrahī ||

He should not store alms for the evening or the next day. His hand is his bowl and his stomach his vessel; he should not be a hoarder like the honeybee.

भिक्षा में मिला अन्न वह शाम या अगले दिन के लिए संग्रह न करे। हाथ ही उसका पात्र हो और पेट ही बर्तन; वह मधुमक्खी की तरह संग्रह करने वाला न बने।

Written for a wandering renunciate. For a householder it means freedom from hoarding and greed, not abandoning savings, family or responsibilities.

यह विचरण करने वाले संन्यासी के लिए कहा गया है। गृहस्थ के लिए इसका अर्थ संग्रह और लोभ से मुक्ति है, बचत, परिवार या ज़िम्मेदारियाँ छोड़ना नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Hoarding comes from fear of tomorrow. For most of us the lesson is to keep a lighter grip on possessions and not let accumulation become the purpose of life.

संग्रह कल के डर से आता है। अधिकतर लोगों के लिए सीख यह है कि वस्तुओं पर पकड़ ढीली रखें और जमा करना ही जीवन का लक्ष्य न बन जाए।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He continues the bee's lesson: do not hoard, unlike the honeybee.

3.12 Avadhuta to Yadu

सायन्तनं श्वस्तनं वा न सङ्गृह्णीत भिक्षुकः । मक्षिका इव सङ्गृह्णन्सह तेन विनश्यति ॥

sāyantanaṃ śvastanaṃ vā na saṅgṛhṇīta bhikṣukaḥ | makṣikā iva saṅgṛhṇansaha tena vinaśyati ||

The mendicant should not store alms for the evening or the next day; one who hoards, like the honeybee, perishes along with what he has stored.

भिक्षु शाम या अगले दिन के लिए भिक्षा संग्रह न करे; जो मधुमक्खी की तरह संग्रह करता है, वह अपने संग्रह के साथ ही नष्ट हो जाता है।

Written for a wandering renunciate. For a householder it means freedom from hoarding and greed, not abandoning savings, family or responsibilities.

यह विचरण करने वाले संन्यासी के लिए कहा गया है। गृहस्थ के लिए इसका अर्थ संग्रह और लोभ से मुक्ति है, बचत, परिवार या ज़िम्मेदारियाँ छोड़ना नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

What we cling to can end up destroying us, as the bee dies with its hive when the honey is taken. Greed for more puts us in danger rather than security.

जिससे हम चिपकते हैं वही हमारा नाश कर सकता है, जैसे शहद ले जाते समय मधुमक्खी छत्ते के साथ मरती है। अधिक का लोभ सुरक्षा नहीं, खतरा देता है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He repeats the warning against hoarding: the honeybee dies with its store.

3.13 Avadhuta to Yadu

पदापि युवतीं भिक्षुर्न स्पृशेद्दारवीमपि । स्पृशन्करीव बध्येत करिण्या अङ्गसङ्गतः ॥

padāpi yuvatīṃ bhikṣurna spṛśeddāravīmapi | spṛśankarīva badhyeta kariṇyā aṅgasaṅgataḥ ||

A mendicant should not touch a young woman even with his foot, not even one made of wood; touching her, he would be bound like the elephant captured through contact with a she-elephant.

भिक्षु युवती को पैर से भी न छुए, लकड़ी की बनी (प्रतिमा) को भी नहीं; छूने पर वह वैसे ही बँध जाता है जैसे हथिनी के अंग-स्पर्श से हाथी पकड़ा जाता है।

This verse is addressed to a male renunciate and reflects the renunciate viewpoint of its time. It is about one's own craving, and must never be used to blame, demean or control women. It is not a demand for celibacy from anyone else.

यह श्लोक पुरुष संन्यासी को संबोधित है और अपने समय के संन्यासी दृष्टिकोण को दर्शाता है। यह अपनी ही लालसा के बारे में है; इसे स्त्रियों को दोष देने, नीचा दिखाने या नियंत्रित करने के लिए कभी प्रयोग न करें। यह किसी और से ब्रह्मचर्य की माँग नहीं है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

The image is of hunters using a decoy to trap an elephant: craving is the trap. It is a rule for a renunciate's own vow of celibacy.

छवि यह है कि शिकारी नकली हथिनी से हाथी फँसाते हैं: लालसा ही फंदा है। यह संन्यासी के अपने ब्रह्मचर्य-व्रत का नियम है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. His next teacher is the bull elephant, caught by means of a she-elephant; he applies it to a mendicant's vow.

3.14 Avadhuta to Yadu

नाधिगच्छेत्स्त्रियं प्राज्ञः कर्हिचिन्मृत्युमात्मनः । बलाधिकैः स हन्येत गजैरन्यैर्गजो यथा ॥

nādhigacchetstriyaṃ prājñaḥ karhicinmṛtyumātmanaḥ | balādhikaiḥ sa hanyeta gajairanyairgajo yathā ||

A wise man should never pursue a woman, who would be his own death; he would be killed by stronger rivals, as an elephant is killed by other, stronger elephants.

बुद्धिमान पुरुष कभी स्त्री के पीछे न जाए, जो उसकी अपनी मृत्यु (बन सकती) है; वह अपने से बलवानों द्वारा मारा जाएगा, जैसे हाथी दूसरे बलवान हाथियों द्वारा।

This verse is addressed to a male renunciate and reflects the renunciate viewpoint of its time. It is about one's own craving, and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

यह श्लोक पुरुष संन्यासी को संबोधित है और अपने समय के संन्यासी दृष्टिकोण को दर्शाता है। यह अपनी ही लालसा के बारे में है; इसे स्त्रियों को दोष देने, नीचा दिखाने या नियंत्रित करने के लिए कभी प्रयोग न करें।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Read in its frame, the danger is in obsessive pursuit and rivalry, which can ruin a person. The verse is a renunciate's rule, not a judgement of women.

अपने प्रसंग में, खतरा जुनूनी पीछा करने और प्रतिद्वंद्विता में है, जो इंसान को बर्बाद कर सकती है। यह संन्यासी का नियम है, स्त्रियों पर निर्णय नहीं।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He continues the elephant's lesson: the bull elephant seeking a mate is killed by stronger rivals.

3.15 Avadhuta to Yadu

न देयं नोपभोग्यं च लुब्धैर्यद्दुःखसञ्चितम् । भुङ्क्ते तदपि तच्चान्यो मधुहेवार्थविन्मधु ॥

na deyaṃ nopabhogyaṃ ca lubdhairyadduḥkhasañcitam | bhuṅkte tadapi taccānyo madhuhevārthavinmadhu ||

Wealth that the greedy pile up with pain, neither giving it away nor enjoying it, is enjoyed by someone else who knows how to get it, as the honey-gatherer takes the honey.

जिस धन को लोभी कष्ट से जमा करते हैं, न दान देते हैं न स्वयं भोगते हैं, उसे कोई और ही भोगता है जो उसे पाना जानता है, जैसे मधु निकालने वाला शहद ले जाता है।

Not financial advice; the verse is against miserly hoarding, not against sensible saving.

यह वित्तीय सलाह नहीं है; श्लोक कंजूसी भरे संग्रह के विरुद्ध है, समझदारी की बचत के विरुद्ध नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Money hoarded out of greed, neither used well nor shared, usually ends up with someone else. Wealth has meaning only in wise use and giving.

लोभ से जमा किया धन, जिसका न अच्छा उपयोग हो न दान, अक्सर किसी और के हाथ लगता है। धन का अर्थ उसके सही उपयोग और दान में ही है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. His next teacher is the honey-gatherer, who takes what the bees stored with toil.

3.16 Avadhuta to Yadu

सुदुःखोपार्जितैर्वित्तैराशासानां गृहाशिषः । मधुहेवाग्रतो भुङ्क्ते यतिर्वै गृहमेधिनाम् ॥

suduḥkhopārjitairvittairāśāsānāṃ gṛhāśiṣaḥ | madhuhevāgrato bhuṅkte yatirvai gṛhamedhinām ||

From the wealth that householders earn with great pain, hoping for a happy home life, the renunciate eats first, just as the honey-gatherer takes the honey first.

गृहस्थ बड़े कष्ट से कमाए धन से घर के सुख की आशा रखते हैं, पर उससे संन्यासी पहले भोजन करता है, जैसे मधु निकालने वाला सबसे पहले शहद लेता है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

In the tradition, householders feed the renunciate first. For us it is a reminder that what we earn so anxiously is not ours alone; it supports others too.

परंपरा में गृहस्थ पहले संन्यासी को भोजन देते हैं। हमारे लिए यह याद दिलाता है कि जो हम इतनी चिंता से कमाते हैं वह केवल हमारा नहीं; उससे दूसरों का भी पोषण होता है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He continues the honey-gatherer's lesson: the renunciate eats first from householders' hard-won food.

3.17 Avadhuta to Yadu

ग्राम्यगीतं न शृणुयाद्यतिर्वनचरः क्वचित् । शिक्षेत हरिणाद्बद्धान्मृगयोर्गीतमोहितात् ॥

grāmyagītaṃ na śṛṇuyādyatirvanacaraḥ kvacit | śikṣeta hariṇādbaddhānmṛgayorgītamohitāt ||

A renunciate living in the forest should never listen to worldly songs. Let him learn from the deer, which is caught when bewitched by the hunter's song.

वन में रहने वाला संन्यासी कभी सांसारिक गीत न सुने। वह उस हिरण से सीखे जो शिकारी के गीत से मोहित होकर बँध जाता है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

What we let into our ears shapes our mind. Being choosy about the music, media and talk we absorb protects us from being led where we did not mean to go.

जो हम सुनते हैं वह मन को गढ़ता है। जो संगीत, मीडिया और बातें हम ग्रहण करते हैं, उनमें चुनाव करना हमें वहाँ खिंचने से बचाता है जहाँ हम जाना नहीं चाहते थे।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. His next teacher is the deer, which is lured by a hunter's song and caught.

3.18 Avadhuta to Yadu

नृत्यवादित्रगीतानि जुषन्ग्राम्याणि योषिताम् । आसां क्रीडनको वश्य ऋष्यशृङ्गो मृगीसुतः ॥

nṛtyavāditragītāni juṣangrāmyāṇi yoṣitām | āsāṃ krīḍanako vaśya ṛṣyaśṛṅgo mṛgīsutaḥ ||

Enjoying the worldly dances, music and songs of women, Rishyashringa, the son of a doe, fell under their sway and became their plaything.

स्त्रियों के सांसारिक नृत्य, वाद्य और गीतों का रस लेते हुए मृगी-पुत्र ऋष्यशृंग उनके वश में होकर उनका खिलौना बन गया।

This verse is addressed to a male renunciate and reflects the renunciate viewpoint of its time. It is about one's own craving, and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

यह श्लोक पुरुष संन्यासी को संबोधित है और अपने समय के संन्यासी दृष्टिकोण को दर्शाता है। यह अपनी ही लालसा के बारे में है; इसे स्त्रियों को दोष देने, नीचा दिखाने या नियंत्रित करने के लिए कभी प्रयोग न करें।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

The story shows how sense-attraction can carry even an ascetic away from his path. The point is about one's own susceptibility.

यह कथा दिखाती है कि इंद्रियों का आकर्षण एक तपस्वी को भी अपने मार्ग से कैसे बहा सकता है। बात अपनी ही कमज़ोरी की है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He gives the example of the sage Rishyashringa, born of a doe, who was drawn from the forest by women's music and dance.

3.19 Avadhuta to Yadu

जिह्वयातिप्रमाथिन्या जनो रसविमोहितः । मृत्युमृच्छत्यसद्बुद्धिर्मीनस्तु बडिशैर्यथा ॥

jihvayātipramāthinyā jano rasavimohitaḥ | mṛtyumṛcchatyasadbuddhirmīnastu baḍiśairyathā ||

Through the tongue, which torments so violently, a person deluded by taste and of poor judgement meets death, as a fish does on the hook.

अत्यंत मथ डालने वाली जीभ के कारण स्वाद से मोहित, दुर्बुद्धि मनुष्य मृत्यु को प्राप्त होता है, जैसे मछली काँटे से।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Taste and appetite are among the hardest pulls to resist, and they can damage health and life when they rule us. The hook hides inside the bait.

स्वाद और भूख का खिंचाव सबसे कठिन होता है, और जब यह हम पर राज करे तो स्वास्थ्य और जीवन बिगाड़ सकता है। काँटा चारे के भीतर छिपा होता है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. His next teacher is the fish, caught by the bait on the hook.

3.20 Avadhuta to Yadu

इन्द्रियाणि जयन्त्याशु निराहारा मनीषिणः । वर्जयित्वा तु रसनं तन्निरन्नस्य वर्धते ॥

indriyāṇi jayantyāśu nirāhārā manīṣiṇaḥ | varjayitvā tu rasanaṃ tannirannasya vardhate ||

The wise who fast quickly conquer the senses, except for taste; in one who goes without food, that only grows stronger.

उपवास करने वाले विवेकी जन इंद्रियों को शीघ्र जीत लेते हैं, पर जीभ को छोड़कर; भोजन न करने वाले में वह और बढ़ जाती है।

Not dietary or medical advice. Fasting or going without food can harm health; anyone with an eating disorder or a medical condition should not take this literally. Tele-MANAS 14416 for help.

यह आहार या चिकित्सा सलाह नहीं है। उपवास या भोजन न करना स्वास्थ्य को हानि पहुँचा सकता है; खान-पान संबंधी विकार या किसी रोग से ग्रस्त व्यक्ति इसे शब्दशः न लें। सहायता के लिए टेली-मानस 14416।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Suppressing appetite often makes the craving louder. Real mastery of taste comes from understanding and moderation, not from starving.

भूख को दबाने से अक्सर लालसा और तेज़ हो जाती है। स्वाद पर सच्चा नियंत्रण समझ और संयम से आता है, भूखे रहने से नहीं।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He continues the fish's lesson: fasting curbs the other senses, but not taste.

3.21 Avadhuta to Yadu

तावज्जितेन्द्रियो न स्याद्विजितान्येन्द्रियः पुमान् । न जयेद्रसनं यावज्जितं सर्वं जिते रसे ॥

No one else can do our inner work for us. Staying alert to how short life is helps us stop wasting it on what doesn't matter.

हमारा भीतरी काम कोई और नहीं कर सकता। जीवन कितना छोटा है, इसके प्रति जागरूक रहना हमें व्यर्थ चीज़ों में उसे गँवाने से रोकता है।

Pingala, disenchanted at midnight, sings to herself; the Avadhuta reports her song to King Yadu. She concludes: the Self is its own protector.

3.43 Avadhuta to Yadu

एवं व्यवसितमतिर्दुराशां कान्ततर्षजाम् । छित्त्वोपशममास्थाय शय्यामुपविवेश सा ॥

evaṃ vyavasitamatirdurāśāṃ kāntatarṣajām | chittvopaśamamāsthāya śayyāmupaviveśa sā ||

Her mind thus resolved, she cut off the false hope born of longing for lovers, took her stand in calm, and lay down on her bed.

इस प्रकार दृढ़ निश्चय करके उसने प्रेमियों की लालसा से उपजी दुराशा को काट दिया, शांति में स्थित हुई और अपनी शय्या पर लेट गई।

Pingala's story is a seeker's turn to God, not a judgement on sex workers. It must never be used to demean or shame anyone for their work or past.

पिंगला की कथा एक साधक का ईश्वर की ओर मुड़ना है, यौनकर्मियों पर कोई निर्णय नहीं। इसे किसी को उसके काम या अतीत के लिए नीचा दिखाने या लज्जित करने के लिए कभी प्रयोग न करें।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

A clear decision to let go can bring immediate rest. Sometimes peace is as simple as no longer waiting.

छोड़ने का स्पष्ट निर्णय तुरंत विश्राम दे सकता है। कभी-कभी शांति बस प्रतीक्षा न करने में है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He finishes Pingala's story: she lets go and lies down in peace.

3.44 Avadhuta to Yadu

आशा हि परमं दुःखं नैराश्यं परमं सुखम् । यथा सञ्छिद्य कान्ताशां सुखं सुष्वाप पिङ्गला ॥

āśā hi paramaṃ duḥkhaṃ nairāśyaṃ paramaṃ sukham | yathā sañchidya kāntāśāṃ sukhaṃ suṣvāpa piṅgalā ||

Hope is indeed the greatest sorrow, and freedom from hope the greatest happiness: so Pingala, cutting off her hope for a lover, slept happily.

आशा ही परम दुख है और निराशा (आशा का न रहना) ही परम सुख है; जैसे प्रेमी की आशा काटकर पिंगला सुख से सो गई।

Nairāśya here means freedom from craving, not hopelessness. For someone in despair, hopelessness is not the teaching; Tele-MANAS 14416.

यहाँ नैराश्य का अर्थ लालसा से मुक्ति है, हताशा नहीं। निराशा में डूबे व्यक्ति के लिए हताशा यह शिक्षा नहीं है; टेली-मानस 14416।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

The 'hope' here is the anxious craving for what others will bring us, not hope in the sense of courage. Dropping that dependence is what gives rest.

यहाँ 'आशा' का अर्थ यह बेचैन लालसा है कि दूसरे हमें क्या देंगे, साहस वाली आशा नहीं। उस निर्भरता को छोड़ना ही विश्राम देता है।

Krishna tells Uddhava what the Avadhuta said to King Yadu. He states the moral of Pingala's story, one of the best-known lines of the Bhagavata.
