One who has taken the treatment that destroys the fever of craving, the medicine of knowledge and dispassion, no longer falls into the state born of the full-blown fever of desire, tormented by being joined to hundreds of strings of bodies [birth after birth].
Meaning today and context
Craving is treated here like a fever: it can be cured, and the cure is understanding plus a loosening of attachment, not more getting. When wanting keeps you restless, the medicine is to see clearly what you already are.
Shankaracharya opens the last chapter, a dialogue between the Self and the mind, in his own voice: knowledge and dispassion are named as the medicine for the fever of craving.
You, [mind], strive after 'I' and 'mine' to no good end. Others hold that your striving is for the sake of another [the Self]. But you have no grasp of any purpose, and I have no wanting at all. So, mind, only calm befits you.
Meaning today and context
Much of the mind's busyness is building and defending 'I' and 'mine'. The verse invites you to notice that the awareness you are does not need that striving, and to let the mind settle.
The Self now addresses the mind directly. Against the Sāṃkhya view that the mind's activity serves the purposes of the conscious self, the Self says it has no wants, so the mind's striving serves nothing.

Since I am none other than the eternal Supreme, I am ever content; so I have no wants. Ever free, I desire no gain. O mind, strive all the more for your own calming.
Meaning today and context
At the deepest level nothing is missing in you. The work left is not to complete yourself but to let the mind quieten into that contentment.
The Self continues speaking to the mind: being the eternal Supreme itself, it is always content and always free, so the mind should work for its own peace.

That which has passed beyond the string of six waves is itself the Self of the world and of us, as scripture says; and I make it known by valid means of knowledge too. Therefore, mind, your striving is in vain.
Meaning today and context
Hunger, grief, ageing and death touch the body and mind, but the awareness that knows them is not moved. The mind need not anxiously guard what is already beyond harm.
The Self tells the mind that the Self, beyond the 'six waves' (hunger, thirst, grief, delusion, old age, death), is known from scripture and valid reasoning; so the mind's efforts on its behalf are pointless.
tvayi praśānte na hi sāsti bhedadhīryato jaganmohamupaiti māyayā | graho hi māyāprabhavasya kāraṇaṃ grahādvimoke na hi sāsti kasyacit ||
When you are calm, the notion of difference, through which the world falls into delusion by māyā, is not there. Grasping is the cause of what māyā produces; for one freed from grasping, it exists for no one.
Meaning today and context
Much of our confusion comes from the mind clutching: at outcomes, at people, at a picture of ourselves. When that clutching eases, the world stops looking like a field of threats and rivals.
The Self explains to the mind that the sense of separateness exists only while the mind is agitated, and that grasping is what gives rise to māyā.

Your activity brings me no delusion, for I am awake to the truth, unbound and changeless. For us there is no division into an earlier and a later state. Therefore, mind, your striving is in vain.

The mind's commotion does not change who you are. You are not a 'before' self waiting to become an improved 'after' self; awareness is the same through every state.
The Self tells the mind that its activity cannot delude the Self, which is awake to the truth, unbound and changeless, with no 'before' and 'after' state.

Since I am eternal, I am never otherwise; to be joined with change would mean impermanence. I am ever shining, and so I am non-dual. What is imagined is unreal: this stands established.
Meaning today and context
Moods and states change; the awareness in which they appear does not. Recognising this gives a steadier footing than any single mood can.
The Self argues to the mind that because it is eternal it cannot change, and because it is ever-shining it is one without a second; whatever is imagined beside it is unreal.

Here, O mind, you are of the nature of non-being; when you are examined, reason finds no existence in you. For the real is never destroyed, and the unreal is never born; duality is yours, and so your non-existence is accepted.
Meaning today and context
When you look closely for 'the mind' you find only passing thoughts, not a solid thing. Seeing this can loosen the hold of anxious thinking; it is not a reason to dismiss your mental health.
The Self tells the mind that, examined by reason, the mind has no independent existence: the real never perishes and the unreal is never born, and duality belongs to the mind alone.

Seer, seen and seeing: all that error is imagined by you. Nothing seen is ever perceived as separate from seeing itself; just as in dream, so in waking it is not divided.
Meaning today and context
Everything you experience appears within awareness, never outside it. Noticing this can soften the sense of being a small observer cut off from life.
The Self tells the mind that the split into seer, seen and seeing is a projection of the mind; nothing seen is ever found apart from pure seeing (consciousness), in dream or waking.

Imagining too would be non-dual, since it is joined to nothing real, like the circle of a whirling firebrand. Since there is no difference of powers, nor of selves, non-duality is established from scripture.
Meaning today and context
A whirling torch seems to make a ring that is not really there. Many of the mind's pictures are like that: vivid, but made of motion, not substance.
The Self argues that even the mind's imaginings are non-dual, like the circle traced by a whirling firebrand, and that scripture establishes the oneness of selves.

If conscious beings were mutually distinct, they would surely perish, because they would have limited size; for things that have difference are seen to be perishable. And the world would come to an end with the liberation of all.
Meaning today and context
A step in the argument: what is truly conscious cannot be a bounded, separate thing, or it would be as fragile as everything else that is bounded.
The Self argues against schools that posit many separate conscious selves (such as Sāṃkhya): if selves were mutually distinct, they would be limited and therefore perishable.

No one is mine, nor am I anyone's, because I am non-dual, and nothing imagined truly exists. I am not imagined, being established before [all imagining]; it is only duality that imagining imagines.
This is about the Self beyond ownership, not advice to disown, abandon or stop caring for family, partner or friends. For most people it means loving without possessiveness.
Meaning today and context
Your deepest self is not defined by ownership or by belonging to someone else's story. That can free love from possessiveness; it is not a reason to withdraw from the people in your life.
The Self declares to the mind that, being one without a second, it neither possesses anyone nor belongs to anyone; it was already established before any imagining, and duality is only imagined.

vikalpanā cāpyabhave na vidyate sadanyadityevamato na nāstitā | yataḥ pravṛttā tava cāpi kalpanā purā prasiddherna ca tadvikalpitam ||
Imagining does not occur in sheer non-being; [it needs] something real other than itself, so [the Self] is not non-existent. And since your own imagining proceeds from what was established before it, that [ground] is not imagined.
Meaning today and context
Even doubt and imagination need someone aware for them to happen. That awareness cannot itself be doubted away.
The Self argues against the view that everything is empty (a Buddhist position): imagining needs a real ground other than itself, so the Self cannot be non-existent.
For you too, whatever is seen as duality is unreal; yet merely because [the Self] is not seen, it is not non-existent. That from which the imagining of 'is' and 'is not' proceeds, as inquiry itself does, is the non-dual, and it is real.
Meaning today and context
You cannot see awareness the way you see a table, but that is because it is what does the seeing, not because it is absent.
The Self continues the argument: whatever is seen as duality is unreal, but the fact that the Self is not seen as an object does not make it non-existent.
If the real, which you accepted and assumed as the basis of inquiry, is [then said to be] non-existent, [still] when inquiry ceases it remains just as it was. And if that is not accepted, it must be held to be real all the more.
Meaning today and context
A step in the argument: thinking about reality already rests on something real, and that does not vanish when the thinking stops.
The Self presses the opponent who calls the real non-existent: the real had to be assumed for inquiry to begin, and it remains when inquiry ends.
If you say the real too is the same as the unreal, because it serves no purpose, like a donkey's horn: [no]. Purposelessness in the unreal comes from its having no cause [to exist]; that is not so [for the real]. So in the reverse case it is not otherwise.
Meaning today and context
A technical rebuttal: the fact that the Self is not 'useful' like an object does not make it as unreal as a donkey's horn.
The Self answers an objection that the real is no better than the unreal, since both serve no purpose, like a donkey's horn.

And because the grounds of [the opponent's] inquiry are not established, duality has spread from that [Self] through māyā alone. By scripture, by tradition and by reasoning it is established thus, and in no other way does it hold together.
Meaning today and context
The variety of the world is real as appearance, but its ground is one. Advaita claims this is supported by scripture and reason alike.
The Self concludes this line of argument: duality has spread out through māyā, as scripture, tradition and reasoning all establish.
[The Self] is unlike anything imagined and is non-dual, by scripture and because it is established before all imagining. So 'not this, not this' negates here too whatever is imagined, in order to establish what remains.
Meaning today and context
You find what you are by setting aside what you are not: not this role, not this mood, not this story. What is left when all that is set aside is the point.
The Self explains the scriptural method of 'not this, not this' (neti neti): what is imagined is negated so that what remains, the Self, is revealed.

Thus, in what is unimagined, unborn, non-dual and imperishable, they imagine existence and non-existence through births; and so they go on and on into becoming, old age and death, which spring from the māyā of their own minds.
Meaning today and context
Much suffering is built by our own minds: stories of who we are, what we lack, what we will lose. Seeing that the mind is the builder is the first step toward not being trapped by it.
The Self describes to the mind how people, imagining being and non-being and births in the unborn Self, keep falling into the cycle of becoming, old age and death made by their own mind's māyā.
bhavābhavatvaṃ tu na cedavasthitirna tasya cānyastviti janma nānyathā | sato hyasattvādasataśca sattvato na ca kriyā kārakamityato'pyajam ||
If being and non-being are not [the Self's] abiding nature, and there is nothing else for it, then birth is not possible in any other way. For the real cannot become unreal, nor the unreal real; nor is an action [its own] agent. Hence too [the Self] is unborn.
Meaning today and context
A step in the argument for the unborn Self: what you most deeply are did not begin and cannot end.
The Self argues that true birth is impossible: the real cannot become unreal nor the unreal real, and an action cannot be its own agent; so the Self is unborn.
akurvadiṣṭaṃ yadi vāsya kārakaṃ na kiṃcidanyannanu nāstyakārakam | sato'viśeṣādasataśca saccyutau tulāntayoryadvadaniścayānna hi ||
Or if something that does nothing were held to be its cause, [that cause would be] nothing else; surely what does not act is no cause. Since [the effect] would not differ from what already is, and since from what is not [birth] would mean a falling away from being, there is no [birth], just as nothing is decided when the two pans of a scale [stay level].
Meaning today and context
A technical step: neither 'from something' nor 'from nothing' explains a real birth of the Self, so the Self must be unborn.
The Self continues against theories of origination: no cause can be found for birth, whether from what is or from what is not.
na cetsa iṣṭaḥ sadasadviparyayaḥ kathaṃ bhavaḥ syātsadasadvyavasthitau | vibhaktametaddvayamapyavasthitaṃ na janma tasmācca mano hi kasyacit ||
If that reversal of being and non-being is not accepted, how could there be becoming, when being and non-being each stay as they are? These two remain distinct and fixed; therefore there is no birth, and no mind of anyone [is truly born].
Meaning today and context
The mind, with all its noise, is an appearance, not a second reality next to you. Its turmoil need not be taken as the final truth about you.
The Self closes the argument against origination and tells the mind that, since being and non-being stay fixed, no mind of anyone is ever really born.
athābhyupetyāpi bhavaṃ tavecchato bravīmi nārthastava ceṣṭitena me | na hānavṛddhī na yataḥ svato'sato bhavo'nyato vā yadi vāstitā tayoḥ ||
Now, even granting your existence as you wish, I tell you: I have no use for your activity. For me there is neither loss nor gain, since becoming does not come from what is not, either by itself or from another, even if the two [of us] did exist.

Whatever your mind does, racing, worrying, judging, it does not make you more or less. Your worth is not raised by good moods or lowered by bad ones.
The Self makes a concession to the mind: even granting that the mind exists as it wishes, the mind's activity neither adds to nor takes away from the Self.
dhruvā hyanityāśca na cānyayogino mithaśca kāryaṃ na ca teṣu yujyate | ato na kasyāpi hi kiṃcidiṣyate svayaṃ hi tattvaṃ na niruktigocaram ||
Things eternal and things impermanent do not join with another, and no mutual effect is possible among them. Hence nothing at all is held to belong to anyone; the truth itself is beyond the range of words.

Words and concepts point toward the truth but cannot hold it. That is why this teaching asks for recognition, not just agreement.
The Self argues that neither the eternal nor the impermanent can truly interact, so nothing belongs to anyone, and the ultimate truth lies beyond the reach of words.
Therefore the wise one, seeing by reasoning and by scripture that which is even, ever shining like the dawn, free from the duality imagined as existent and non-existent, attains complete extinction [of suffering], like a lamp [that has gone out].
'Extinction like a lamp' means the ending of ignorance and suffering, not death or ending one's life. If you are thinking of ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Peace comes from seeing clearly, through steady thought and good teaching, that what you are is untouched by the swings of 'is' and 'is not', gain and loss. What goes out, like a lamp, is the restless striving, not you.
Drawing the conclusion of the dialogue, the Self describes the wise person who, by reasoning and scripture, sees the even, ever-shining Self free of all imagined duality.
avedyamekaṃ yadananyavedināṃ kutārkikāṇāṃ ca suvedyamanyathā | nirīkṣya cetthaṃ tvaguṇagraho'guṇaṃ na yāti mohaṃ grahadoṣamuktitaḥ ||
The One is not an object of knowledge for those who know nothing other [than it], while to bad logicians it seems easily known, [but] as something else. One who sees it thus, grasping the attributeless as attributeless, does not fall into delusion, being freed from the fault of grasping.
Meaning today and context
The Self is not a clever idea to win arguments with; it is known by being it, not by holding it as an object. Turning it into one more possession of the mind is the very grasping the chapter warns against.
The Self contrasts those who know the One as non-different from themselves with quarrelsome logicians who think it easily known as something else; whoever grasps it as attributeless is freed from delusion.
ato'nyathā na grahanāśa iṣyate vimohabuddhergraha eva kāraṇam | graho'pyaheturhyanalastvanindhano yathā praśāntiṃ paramāṃ tathā vrajet ||
So in no other way is the end of grasping accepted; grasping alone is the cause of the deluded mind. When grasping too is left without a cause, then, like a fire without fuel, one goes to the highest peace.
Meaning today and context
You cannot force the mind still; but when you stop feeding its grasping with the belief that you need this or must hold onto that, it quietens on its own, like a fire with no more wood.
The Self gives the chapter's practical conclusion to the mind: grasping alone causes the deluded mind, and when grasping loses its cause it goes out like a fire without fuel.

As the gods churned the great ocean and drew out the nectar, so the great-souled ones long ago churned the ocean of the Veda and drew out this nectar of knowledge. Salutations to those teachers by whom the Supreme was seen.

A closing gratitude: such understanding comes down through teachers who found it before us.
Shankaracharya closes the chapter and the whole metrical part with a salutation to the teachers who drew the nectar of knowledge out of the Veda, as the gods churned nectar from the ocean.
