Chapter 4

4.1 Dattatreya

nāvāhanaṃ naiva visarjanaṃ vā puṣpāṇi patrāṇi kathaṃ bhavanti | dhyānāni mantrāṇi kathaṃ bhavanti samāsamaṃ caiva śivārcanaṃ ca ||

There is no invoking of the deity and no sending it away; how can there be flowers and leaves? How can there be meditations and mantras, and how the worship of Shiva, who is beyond same and not-same?

The verse speaks from the state of one who sees no separation between worshipper and worshipped. It does not mock or forbid worship; prayer and ritual remain meaningful for those who practise them.

Meaning today and context

When the divine is known as one's own being, present everywhere, there is nowhere to call it from and nowhere to send it back. This describes the realised state; for most of us, worship is still a way toward that seeing.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says that for one who knows himself as the one reality, the steps of ritual worship have no place.

4.2 Dattatreya

I am not merely free from bondage and its undoing, not merely free from the pure and the very pure, not merely free from union and separation. Truly free is he; I am like the sky.

Meaning today and context

Freedom here is not winning one battle against one problem; it is a space-like openness that no pair of opposites can enclose. It invites us to hold even our spiritual goals lightly.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says his freedom is not freedom from one particular pair of opposites but freedom like the open sky.

4.3 Dattatreya

sañjāyate sarvamidaṃ hi tathyaṃ sañjāyate sarvamidaṃ vitathyam | evaṃ vikalpo mama naiva jātaḥ svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

'All this is truly born'; 'all this is born falsely': such a doubt has never arisen in me. I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Arguments about whether the world is real or illusion can become one more thing to cling to. The verse points to a peace that does not depend on settling that argument.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, sets aside the debate over whether the world is really born or only falsely appears.

4.4 Dattatreya

na sāñjanaṃ caiva nirañjanaṃ vā na cāntaraṃ vāpi nirantaraṃ vā | antarvibhinnaṃ na hi me vibhāti svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Neither stained nor stainless, neither with a gap nor without a gap; no inner division appears in me. I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

We often see ourselves as divided: a good part and a bad part, a stained past and a hoped-for clean future. The verse speaks of a self in which that split does not exist.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says neither stain nor stainlessness, separation nor continuity, applies to him.

4.5 Dattatreya

abodhabodho mama naiva jāto bodhasvarūpaṃ mama naiva jātam | nirbodhabodhaṃ ca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Awakening from not-knowing never happened to me; nor was knowing ever born as my nature. How can I speak of a knowing beyond knowing? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Awareness is not something we acquire at a certain date; it is already present in every moment of knowing. Seeking it as a future event can hide that it is already here.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says he never passed from ignorance into knowledge, because knowing is what he already is.

4.6 Dattatreya

na dharmayukto na ca pāpayukto na bandhayukto na ca mokṣayuktaḥ | yuktaṃ tvayuktaṃ na ca me vibhāti svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

I am not joined to merit, nor joined to sin; not joined to bondage, nor joined to liberation. Joined or unjoined, nothing of the kind appears to me. I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

This describes the state of one who is already free. It is not a licence to drop ethics, duties, or care for others; for most people, right conduct is the ground on which such freedom grows.

Meaning today and context

The deepest self is not a ledger of good and bad deeds. For someone crushed by guilt, this can loosen the belief that they are nothing but their mistakes, while still owning and repairing them.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says merit and sin, bondage and liberation do not touch the Self.

4.7 Dattatreya

parāparaṃ vā na ca me kadācitmadhyasthabhāvo hi na cārimitram | hitāhitaṃ cāpi kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Higher or lower are never mine, nor a neutral middle stance, nor enemy and friend. How can I speak of what helps and what harms? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering comes from sorting people into friends and enemies, above us and below us. At the level of the Self, those labels do not hold, which can soften resentment and rivalry.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says the distinctions of higher and lower, friend and enemy, good and harm do not belong to him.

4.8 Dattatreya

nopāsako naivamupāsyarūpaṃ na copadeśo na ca me kriyā ca | saṃvitsvarūpaṃ ca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

I am not the worshipper, nor the form to be worshipped; there is no instruction and no action of mine. How can I speak of my nature as pure awareness? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

The verse speaks from the state of one who sees no separation between worshipper and worshipped. It does not mock or forbid worship; prayer and ritual remain meaningful for those who practise them.

Meaning today and context

Awareness cannot be pointed at like an object, because it is what does the pointing. Words and teachings can only gesture toward it.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says there is no worshipper, no object of worship, no teaching and no act in pure awareness.

4.9 Dattatreya

no vyāpakaṃ vyāpyamihāsti kiñcitna cālayaṃ vāpi nirālayaṃ vā | aśūnyaśūnyaṃ ca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Here there is nothing that pervades and nothing pervaded, neither a dwelling nor the lack of one. How can I speak of empty or not-empty? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

The Self is not a thing spread out in space, nor an empty void. The verse asks us to stop picturing it as either, and simply rest as what is aware.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says the categories of pervader and pervaded, place and placelessness, empty and full do not apply.

4.10 Dattatreya

na grāhako grāhyakameva kiñcitna kāraṇaṃ vā mama naiva kāryam | acintyacintyaṃ ca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

There is no grasper and nothing at all to be grasped; there is no cause, nor any effect of mine. How can I speak of thinkable and unthinkable? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Restless wanting depends on a split between someone who grasps and something to be grasped. Seeing beyond that split brings a quiet that no acquisition gives.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says he is neither grasper nor grasped, neither cause nor effect.

4.11 Dattatreya

na bhedakaṃ vāpi na caiva bhedyaṃ na vedakaṃ vā mama naiva vedyam | gatāgataṃ tāta kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

There is nothing that divides and nothing divided, no knower and nothing to be known by me. How, dear one, can I speak of going and coming? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Coming and going belong to bodies and situations; the awareness in which they appear does not arrive or leave. This can steady us through moves, endings and change.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, addresses a dear listener ('tata') and says no division, knower or known, coming or going applies to him.

4.12 Dattatreya

na cāsti deho na ca me videho buddhirmano me na hi cendriyāṇi | rāgo virāgaśca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

There is no body, nor am I bodiless; intellect, mind and senses are not mine. How can I speak of passion and dispassion? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

You are not only your body, your moods or your thoughts; they come and go while you remain. This gives a steadier sense of self, and it is never a reason to neglect the body or the mind's real needs.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says he is neither body nor bodiless, and intellect, mind and senses are not his.

4.13 Dattatreya

ullekhamātraṃ na hi bhinnamuccairullekhamātraṃ na tirohitaṃ vai | samāsamaṃ mitra kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

It is only a mental outline; it is not truly separate, nor truly concealed. How, friend, can I speak of equal and unequal? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Many of the lines we draw between ourselves and others are drawn by the mind. Seeing that can make comparison and feeling unequal lose some of their grip.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says difference is only a name or outline, neither truly separate nor truly hidden.

4.14 Dattatreya

jitendriyo'haṃ tvajitendriyo vā na saṃyamo me niyamo na jātaḥ | jayājayau mitra kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Whether I have mastered the senses or not, no restraint and no rule has arisen in me. How, friend, can I speak of victory and defeat? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

This describes the state of one who is already free. It is not a licence to drop ethics, duties, or care for others; for most people, right conduct is the ground on which such freedom grows.

Meaning today and context

Win or lose, the one who is aware of winning and losing is not made bigger or smaller by it. This describes the free; for the rest of us, self-discipline is still the road, walked without self-hatred when we slip.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says self-mastery and its lack, restraint and rule, victory and defeat do not belong to the Self.

4.15 Dattatreya

amūrtamūrtirna ca me kadācidādyantamadhyaṃ na ca me kadācit | balābalaṃ mitra kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Formless or with form, I never am; beginning, end and middle are never mine. How, friend, can I speak of strength and weakness? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Feeling strong or weak changes with health, age and circumstance. The verse points to something in us that was never strong or weak, which can be a quiet support in illness or ageing.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says form and formlessness, beginning, middle and end, strength and weakness are never his.

4.16 Dattatreya

mṛtāmṛtaṃ vāpi viṣāviṣaṃ ca sañjāyate tāta na me kadācit | aśuddhaśuddhaṃ ca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Mortal and immortal, poison and not-poison never arise in me, dear one. How can I speak of impure and pure? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

When someone is grieving or thinking about death, this verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The fear of death and the hunger for immortality both assume a self that can die. The verse points to awareness that neither of them touches.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says death and deathlessness, poison and nectar, purity and impurity never arise in him.

4.17 Dattatreya

svapnaḥ prabodho na ca yogamudrā naktaṃ divā vāpi na me kadācit | aturyaturyaṃ ca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Dream and waking, the seals of yoga, night and day are never mine. How can I speak of the fourth state and what is not the fourth? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Waking, dreaming and sleep come and go; what knows them does not. Even the 'fourth' is not an extra state to achieve but a name for that constant awareness.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says dream and waking, yogic postures, night and day, and even the 'fourth' state are not his.

4.18 Dattatreya

saṃviddhi māṃ sarvavisarvamuktaṃ māyā vimāyā na ca me kadācit | sandhyādikaṃ karma kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Know me as free of all and not-all; maya and its absence are never mine. How can I speak of the twilight prayers and other rites? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

The verse speaks from the state of one who sees no separation between worshipper and worshipped. It does not mock or forbid worship; prayer and ritual remain meaningful for those who practise them.

Meaning today and context

Daily rites belong to a life lived in time; the Self is not in time. This describes the state of one already free; it is not a reason for others to give up their practice.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says he is free of all and not-all, beyond maya and its absence, so daily rites like the twilight prayers have no hold on him.

4.19 Dattatreya

saṃviddhi māṃ sarvasamādhiyuktaṃ saṃviddhi māṃ lakṣyavilakṣyamuktam | yogaṃ viyogaṃ ca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Know me as joined with every samadhi; know me as free of every aim and non-aim. How can I speak of union and separation? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Meditation usually has an object to hold. The verse points to the stillness that is already there before any object, which is why striving too hard in meditation can get in the way.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says he is always in every samadhi and beyond any target of meditation.

4.20 Dattatreya

mūrkho'pi nāhaṃ na ca paṇḍito'haṃ maunaṃ vimaunaṃ na ca me kadācit | tarkaṃ vitarkaṃ ca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

I am not a fool, nor am I a scholar; silence and its absence are never mine. How can I speak of reasoning and counter-reasoning? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Whether others call you clever or stupid, that label is not who you are. Knowing this can ease both the fear of looking foolish and the pride of being learned, and quieten the urge to win every argument.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says he is neither fool nor scholar, neither silent nor speaking, beyond argument and counter-argument.

4.21 Dattatreya

pitā ca mātā ca kulaṃ na jātirjanmādi mṛtyurna ca me kadācit | snehaṃ vimohaṃ ca kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Father, mother, family and caste, birth and death are never mine. How can I speak of affection and infatuation? I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

This is about the Self, not advice to abandon or neglect parents and family. If you are grieving a parent, your grief is natural; the verse does not dismiss mourning.

Meaning today and context

Who we truly are is not decided by family, caste or birth. That frees us from being defined by where we came from; it does not mean our love and duty toward family stop mattering.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says father, mother, family, caste, birth and death do not belong to the Self.

4.22 Dattatreya

astaṃ gato naiva sadodito'haṃ tejovitejo na ca me kadācit | sandhyādikaṃ karma kathaṃ vadāmi svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

I have never set; I am ever risen. Brightness and its absence are never mine.

Like a sun that only seems to rise and set from where we stand, awareness never goes out, even when our moods and days darken. This describes the free; it does not tell others to drop their daily practice.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, compares the Self to a sun that never sets, so rites tied to sunrise and sunset have no hold on him.

4.23 Dattatreya

asaṃśayaṃ viddhi nirākulaṃ māṃ asaṃśayaṃ viddhi nirantaraṃ mām | asaṃśayaṃ viddhi nirañjanaṃ māṃ svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

Know me, beyond doubt, as untroubled; know me, beyond doubt, as unbroken; know me, beyond doubt, as spotless. I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

Beneath anxious thoughts there is an awareness that is not anxious, not broken into pieces, not stained by what has happened. Turning toward it, again and again, can bring real calm.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, asks the listener to know him, beyond doubt, as untroubled, unbroken and spotless.

4.24 Dattatreya

dhyānāni sarvāṇi parityajanti śubhāśubhaṃ karma parityajanti | tyāgāmṛtaṃ tāta pibanti dhīrāḥ svarūpanirvāṇamanāmayo'ham ||

They give up all meditations; they give up action, good and bad. The steadfast, dear one, drink the nectar of renunciation. I am nirvana itself, my own true nature, free of all affliction.

Renunciation here is inner. It is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities, nor to give up a practice that is helping you.

Meaning today and context

Real letting go includes letting go of even our spiritual effort as something to hold on to. For most people this renunciation is inward: doing what life asks without clinging to it.

Dattatreya, speaking as the Avadhuta in chapter 4, says the steadfast give up all meditations and all good and bad action, and drink the nectar of renunciation.

4.25 Dattatreya

vindati vindati na hi na hi yatra chandolakṣaṇaṃ na hi na hi tatra | samarasamagno bhāvitapūtaḥ pralapati tattvaṃ paramavadhūtaḥ ||

Where there is no 'finding' at all, no, no; where there are no rules of metre, no, no: there, immersed in the one taste of sameness, purified by his realisation, the supreme Avadhuta pours out the truth.

Meaning today and context

Truth spoken from realisation does not need polish or proper form. Sometimes what is most real comes out simply and spontaneously, not as a well-crafted argument.

The closing verse of chapter 4 (it also ends chapter 5): Dattatreya describes the supreme Avadhuta who, absorbed in the one taste of sameness, speaks the truth freely, without regard for the rules of metre.
