Chapter 17

17.1 Arjuna to Krishna

ye śāstravidhimutsṛjya yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ | teṣāṃ niṣṭhā tu kā kṛṣṇa sattvamāho rajastamaḥ ||

Those who set aside the rule of scripture yet worship filled with faith, Krishna, what is their footing: sattva, or rajas, or tamas?

Meaning today and context

Many sincere people pray and practise without knowing the 'correct' rules. Arjuna's question is ours too: does sincere faith count, and what kind of faith is it?

Arjuna asks Krishna about people who worship with faith but without following the rules of scripture: what is their standing, sattva, rajas or tamas?

17.2 Krishna to Arjuna

trividhā bhavati śraddhā dehināṃ sā svabhāvajā | sāttvikī rājasī caiva tāmasī ceti tāṃ śṛṇu ||

The faith of embodied beings is of three kinds, born of their own nature: sāttvic, rājasic and tāmasic. Hear about it.

Meaning today and context

What we trust and devote ourselves to grows out of our deeper tendencies. Looking at the quality of our faith tells us something about who we are becoming.

Krishna begins his answer: faith in embodied beings is of three kinds, born of their own nature.

17.3 Krishna to Arjuna

sattvānurūpā sarvasya śraddhā bhavati bhārata | śraddhāmayo'yaṃ puruṣo yo yacchraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ ||

The faith of each person follows their inner nature, Bhārata. A person is made of faith: whatever one's faith is, that indeed is what one is.

Meaning today and context

What you deeply believe in and give your trust to shapes your choices, your habits and finally your character. If you want to change who you are, look honestly at what you place your faith in.

Krishna says everyone's faith matches their inner make-up; a person is made of faith, and whatever their faith is, that is what they are.

17.4 Krishna to Arjuna

yajante sāttvikā devānyakṣarakṣāṃsi rājasāḥ | pretānbhūtagaṇāṃścānye yajante tāmasā janāḥ ||

Sāttvic people worship the gods; rājasic people, yakṣas and rākṣasas; and others, the tāmasic, worship departed spirits and hosts of ghosts.

This is a classification of motives, not a licence to look down on anyone's family or village deities or folk traditions.

Meaning today and context

What we revere reveals what we want. Worship aimed at light and goodness differs from worship aimed at power and wealth, or at fear and the dark.

Krishna describes what each kind of faith worships: sāttvic people the gods, rājasic people yakṣas and rākṣasas, tāmasic people ghosts and spirits.

17.5 Krishna to Arjuna

aśāstravihitaṃ ghoraṃ tapyante ye tapo janāḥ | dambhāhaṃkārasaṃyuktāḥ kāmarāgabalānvitāḥ ||

Those people who practise fierce austerities not prescribed by scripture, joined with hypocrisy and egoism, impelled by the force of desire and passion,

This verse condemns harming the body in the name of religion. Never fast, starve or punish yourself to the point of harm. If you feel driven to hurt yourself, please reach out now: Tele-MANAS 14416 (India, free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

Extreme self-denial done to show off, to prove a point or to force an outcome is not spiritual. The Gita rejects religion that turns into self-torment.

Krishna condemns people who perform terrible austerities not sanctioned by scripture, driven by hypocrisy, ego, desire and attachment.

17.6 Krishna to Arjuna

karśayantaḥ śarīrasthaṃ bhūtagrāmamacetasaḥ | māṃ caivāntaḥśarīrasthaṃ tānviddhyāsuraniścayān ||

senselessly tormenting the elements that make up the body, and Me too who dwell within the body: know them to be of demonic resolve.

Harming yourself is never a religious duty. If you are thinking of self-harm or feel you deserve punishment, please talk to someone today: Tele-MANAS 14416 (India, free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

Hurting your own body hurts the divine within you. Care for the body is part of the spiritual path, not opposed to it.

Krishna completes the thought: such people torment the elements of their own body and Krishna himself dwelling within; know them to be of demonic resolve.

17.7 Krishna to Arjuna

āhārastvapi sarvasya trividho bhavati priyaḥ | yajñastapastathā dānaṃ teṣāṃ bhedamimaṃ śṛṇu ||

Even the food dear to each person is of three kinds, and so are sacrifice, austerity and giving. Hear this distinction among them.

These verses on food are not dietary or medical advice, and must never be used to judge or look down on people by what they eat.

Meaning today and context

Our tastes, our worship, our discipline and our giving all reflect our inner tendencies. The point is self-observation, not a menu to judge others by.

Krishna says food too, as liked by each person, is of three kinds, as are sacrifice, austerity and giving; he will now describe their differences.

17.8 Krishna to Arjuna

āyuḥsattvabalārogyasukhaprītivivardhanāḥ | rasyāḥ snigdhāḥ sthirā hṛdyā āhārāḥ sāttvikapriyāḥ ||

Foods that increase life, vitality, strength, health, happiness and cheerfulness, that are savoury, smooth with oil, sustaining and pleasing to the heart, are dear to the sāttvic.

Not dietary or medical advice; for health needs consult a doctor or dietitian. Never use this to judge people by what they eat.

Meaning today and context

The verse judges food by what it does for body and mind: steady strength, health and a cheerful heart. It describes a tendency, not a rulebook.

Krishna describes the foods liked by sāttvic people: those that increase life, vitality, strength, health, happiness and cheer.

17.9 Krishna to Arjuna

kaṭvamlalavaṇātyuṣṇatīkṣṇarūkṣavidāhinaḥ | āhārā rājasasyeṣṭā duḥkhaśokāmayapradāḥ ||

Foods that are bitter, sour, salty, very hot, pungent, dry and burning are liked by the rājasic; they bring pain, grief and disease.

Not dietary or medical advice. Shankara reads it as excess of these tastes, not their use. Never use it to judge people or communities by their food.

Meaning today and context

A craving for constant stimulation, in food as in life, tends to leave us restless and unwell. The verse is about excess and agitation, not about any particular cuisine.

Krishna describes the foods liked by rājasic people: excessively bitter, sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry and burning, which bring pain, grief and illness.

17.10 Krishna to Arjuna

yātayāmaṃ gatarasaṃ pūti paryuṣitaṃ ca yat | ucchiṣṭamapi cāmedhyaṃ bhojanaṃ tāmasapriyam ||

Food that is stale, tasteless, putrid, kept overnight, the leavings of others' meals, and impure is dear to the tāmasic.

Not dietary or medical advice. Poverty forces many to eat leftovers or old food; this verse must never be used to shame anyone for what they can afford or what they eat.

Meaning today and context

Neglect and dullness show up even in how we eat. Taking basic care of what goes into the body is a form of self-respect.

Krishna describes the food liked by tāmasic people: stale, tasteless, putrid, left overnight, leftover and impure.

17.11 Krishna to Arjuna

aphalākāṅkṣibhiryajño vidhidṛṣṭo ya ijyate | yaṣṭavyameveti manaḥ samādhāya sa sāttvikaḥ ||

Sacrifice offered according to the rule by those who do not crave its fruit, with the mind fixed on the thought 'this ought to be offered', is sāttvic.

Meaning today and context

The best service or worship is done because it is right, not as a deal for a reward. 'This should be done' is a clean motive.

Krishna describes sāttvic sacrifice: offered as enjoined, by those who do not seek its fruit, with the mind settled on 'this ought to be done'.

17.12 Krishna to Arjuna

abhisaṃdhāya tu phalaṃ dambhārthamapi caiva yat | ijyate bharataśreṣṭha taṃ yajñaṃ viddhi rājasam ||

But sacrifice offered with an eye on the reward, or for the sake of display, know that to be rājasic, best of the Bhāratas.

Meaning today and context

Religious or charitable acts done to impress others or to strike a bargain lose their inner value. Lavish functions for prestige are a modern example.

Krishna describes rājasic sacrifice: offered with an eye on the result, or for show.

17.13 Krishna to Arjuna

vidhihīnamasṛṣṭānnaṃ mantrahīnamadakṣiṇam | śraddhāvirahitaṃ yajñaṃ tāmasaṃ paricakṣate ||

Sacrifice without rule, in which no food is given away, without mantras, without the offering to the priests, and devoid of faith, they call tāmasic.

Meaning today and context

A ritual done carelessly, with nothing shared and no faith behind it, is empty. What matters is sincerity, care and generosity, not just going through the motions.

Krishna describes tāmasic sacrifice: done without rule, without sharing food, without mantras, without fee to the officiants and without faith.

17.14 Krishna to Arjuna

devadvijaguruprājñapūjanaṃ śaucamārjavam | brahmacaryamahiṃsā ca śārīraṃ tapa ucyate ||

Reverence for the gods, the twice-born, teachers and the wise; purity, straightforwardness, continence and non-violence: this is called austerity of the body.

'Twice-born' (dvija) reflects the social order of its time. Read it as respect for those who learn and teach, never as birth-based caste superiority.

Meaning today and context

Real discipline of the body is not self-torture. It is respect for those who teach and guide us, cleanliness, honest dealing, restraint and not harming anyone.

Krishna begins describing the threefold austerity, starting with austerity of the body: reverence for the worthy, purity, straightforwardness, self-restraint and non-harming.

17.15 Krishna to Arjuna

anudvegakaraṃ vākyaṃ satyaṃ priyahitaṃ ca yat | svādhyāyābhyasanaṃ caiva vāṅmayaṃ tapa ucyate ||

Speech that causes no agitation, that is truthful, pleasant and beneficial, and the regular practice of self-study: this is called austerity of speech.

Meaning today and context

Before you speak, check four things: is it true, is it kind, is it helpful, and will it needlessly upset? Truth said harshly, or sweet words that are false, both fall short.

Krishna describes austerity of speech: words that cause no distress, that are true, pleasant and beneficial, along with regular study and recitation.

17.16 Krishna to Arjuna

manaḥprasādaḥ saumyatvaṃ maunamātmavinigrahaḥ | bhāvasaṃśuddhirityetattapo mānasamucyate ||

Clarity of mind, gentleness, silence, self-restraint and purity of heart: this is called austerity of the mind.

Meaning today and context

The deepest discipline is inner: keeping the mind clear and kind, holding back the urge to react, and dealing with others without hidden motives.

Krishna describes austerity of the mind: serenity, gentleness, silence, self-control and purity of intention.

17.17 Krishna to Arjuna

śraddhayā parayā taptaṃ tapastattrividhaṃ naraiḥ | aphalākāṅkṣibhiryuktaiḥ sāttvikaṃ paricakṣate ||

This threefold austerity, practised with supreme faith by steady people who do not crave its fruit, is called sāttvic.

Meaning today and context

Discipline in body, speech and mind becomes truly good when it is done with conviction and without bargaining for a reward.

Krishna says this threefold austerity, practised with the highest faith by steady people who do not seek its fruit, is called sāttvic.

17.18 Krishna to Arjuna

satkāramānapūjārthaṃ tapo dambhena caiva yat | kriyate tadiha proktaṃ rājasaṃ calamadhruvam ||

Austerity practised to gain respect, honour and reverence, or with hypocrisy, is here called rājasic; it is unsteady and does not last.

Meaning today and context

Discipline done for an audience, whether fasts announced on social media or piety for status, is fragile. When the applause stops, so does the practice.

Krishna describes rājasic austerity: done for respect, honour and worship, with hypocrisy; it is unstable and passing.

17.19 Krishna to Arjuna

mūḍhagrāheṇātmano yatpīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ | parasyotsādanārthaṃ vā tattāmasamudāhṛtam ||

Austerity done from a foolish fixation, by torturing oneself, or in order to ruin another, is declared tāmasic.

Self-torment is not spiritual. If you feel driven to punish or hurt yourself, please reach out now: Tele-MANAS 14416 (India, free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

Self-punishment and rituals aimed at harming others are the lowest kind of discipline. Neither has a place on a spiritual path.

Krishna describes tāmasic austerity: done from deluded obstinacy, by torturing oneself, or to destroy another.

17.20 Krishna to Arjuna

dātavyamiti yaddānaṃ dīyate'nupakāriṇe | deśe kāle ca pātre ca taddānaṃ sāttvikaṃ smṛtam ||

A gift given with the thought 'it ought to be given', to one who will do nothing in return, at the right place and time and to a fit recipient, is held to be sāttvic.

Shankara's 'worthy recipient' is a Vedic scholar. Read 'fit recipient' today as someone in genuine need or a cause that truly helps, never as a reason to give only within one caste or group.

Meaning today and context

Good giving expects nothing back and is thoughtful about who truly needs or deserves it and when it will help most. Generosity and good judgment go together.

Krishna describes sāttvic giving: given because it ought to be given, to one who cannot return the favour, at the right place and time, to a worthy recipient.

17.21 Krishna to Arjuna

yattu pratyupakārārthaṃ phalamuddiśya vā punaḥ | dīyate ca parikliṣṭaṃ taddānaṃ rājasaṃ smṛtam ||

But what is given to get a favour in return, or with a reward in view, or given reluctantly, is held to be rājasic.

Meaning today and context

Giving as an investment in obligation, or giving while resenting it, spoils the gift. If you give, give freely; if you cannot, it is more honest not to pretend.

Krishna describes rājasic giving: given to get something back, or with an eye on a reward, or given grudgingly.

17.22 Krishna to Arjuna

adeśakāle yaddānamapātrebhyaśca dīyate | asatkṛtamavajñātaṃ tattāmasamudāhṛtam ||

A gift given at the wrong place and time, to unworthy recipients, without courtesy and with contempt, is declared tāmasic.

Shankara's 'unholy place mixed with mlecchas' reflects the prejudices of his time. Never use this verse to label any people, place or community as unworthy of help.

Meaning today and context

How you give matters as much as what you give. Help handed over with contempt humiliates the receiver; giving without thought can even feed harm.

Krishna describes tāmasic giving: given at the wrong place and time, to the unworthy, without respect and with contempt.

17.23 Krishna to Arjuna

oṃ tatsaditi nirdeśo brahmaṇastrividhaḥ smṛtaḥ | brāhmaṇāstena vedāśca yajñāśca vihitāḥ purā ||

'Oṃ tat sat': this is remembered as the threefold designation of Brahman. By it the brāhmaṇas, the Vedas and the sacrifices were ordained of old.

Meaning today and context

Oṃ tat sat names the ultimate reality as the source of all sacred action. Remembering it turns ordinary acts toward something larger than oneself.

Krishna introduces 'oṃ tat sat' as the threefold designation of Brahman, by which the brāhmaṇas, the Vedas and sacrifices were ordained of old.

17.24 Krishna to Arjuna

tasmādomityudāhṛtya yajñadānatapaḥkriyāḥ | pravartante vidhānoktāḥ satataṃ brahmavādinām ||

Therefore, uttering 'oṃ', the followers of Brahman always begin their acts of sacrifice, giving and austerity as laid down by the rules.

17.25 Krishna to Arjuna

tadityanabhisaṃdhāya phalaṃ yajñatapaḥkriyāḥ | dānakriyāśca vividhāḥ kriyante mokṣakāṅkṣibhiḥ ||

Uttering 'tat', without aiming at the fruit, those who seek liberation perform the various acts of sacrifice, austerity and giving.

Meaning today and context

'Tat' means 'That', pointing beyond oneself. Acting in that spirit means doing good without making it about what you will get.

Krishna says seekers of liberation perform sacrifice, austerity and giving uttering 'tat', without aiming at the fruit.

17.26 Krishna to Arjuna

sadbhāve sādhubhāve ca sadityetatprayujyate | praśaste karmaṇi tathā sacchabdaḥ pārtha yujyate ||

The word 'sat' is used to mean what is real and what is good; and, Pārtha, the word 'sat' is also used for a praiseworthy act.

Meaning today and context

'Sat' joins truth and goodness: what is real and what is right are linked. Worthy action is itself called 'sat'.

Krishna explains 'sat': it is used in the sense of reality and goodness, and also for praiseworthy actions.

17.27 Krishna to Arjuna

yajñe tapasi dāne ca sthitiḥ saditi cocyate | karma caiva tadarthīyaṃ sadityevābhidhīyate ||

Steadfastness in sacrifice, austerity and giving is also called 'sat', and any action done for their sake is likewise called 'sat'.

Meaning today and context

Staying steady in service, discipline and generosity is itself something real and good, and so is the work that supports it.

Krishna says steadfastness in sacrifice, austerity and giving is called 'sat', as is any action done for that purpose.

17.28 Krishna to Arjuna

aśraddhayā hutaṃ dattaṃ tapastaptaṃ kṛtaṃ ca yat | asadityucyate pārtha na ca tatpretya no iha ||

Whatever is offered, given, or done as austerity or any other act without faith is called 'asat', Pārtha; it is of no value either after death or here.

Meaning today and context

Going through good actions mechanically, without any conviction behind them, leaves them hollow. Sincerity is what gives an action its worth.

Krishna closes: whatever offering, gift, austerity or act is done without faith is called 'asat', and is of no worth here or hereafter.
