Chapter 3 (Mahābhārata 5.44)

3.1 Dhritarashtra to Sanatsujata

sanatsujāta yadimāṃ parārthāṃ brāhmīṃ vācaṃ pravadasi viśvarūpām | parāṃ hi kāmeṣu sudurlabhāṃ kathāṃ tadbrūhi me vākyametatkumāra ||

Sanatsujata, you speak this word about Brahman, aimed at the highest good and universal in form. Such a supreme teaching is very hard to come by for those caught up in desires. So tell me this teaching, young sage.

Meaning today and context

A person busy with wants rarely stops to ask about what lasts. Asking for that kind of teaching, and knowing how rare the chance is, is already a step.

Dhritarashtra, still sleepless on the night before the peace embassy, asks the sage Sanatsujata to go on with his teaching about Brahman, which he calls rare for people caught in desires.

3.2 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

naitadbrahma tvaramāṇena labhyaṃ yanmāṃ pṛcchasyabhihṛṣyasyatīva | avyaktavidyāmabhidhāsye purāṇīṃ buddhyā ca teṣāṃ brahmacaryeṇa siddhām ||

This Brahman you ask me about, and are so excited by, is not gained by one who is in a hurry. I will explain the ancient knowledge of the unmanifest, which [the sages] reached through understanding and through brahmacarya.

Meaning today and context

Deep understanding cannot be rushed or grabbed in a burst of enthusiasm. It comes with patience, clear thinking and a disciplined life, over time.

Sanatsujata cools Dhritarashtra's eagerness: Brahman is not gained in a hurry. He promises to explain the ancient knowledge of the unmanifest, which the sages reached through understanding and brahmacarya.

3.3 Dhritarashtra to Sanatsujata

avyaktavidyāmiti yatsanātanīṃ bravīṣi tvaṃ brahmacaryeṇa siddhām | anārabhyā vasatīhārya kāle kathaṃ brāhmaṇyamamṛtatvaṃ labheta ||

You say this eternal knowledge of the unmanifest is reached through brahmacarya. Noble one, if it cannot be brought about by any undertaking, and it abides here [in a person] only in its own time, how is one to gain the state of Brahman, immortality?

Meaning today and context

It is a fair question for anyone who hears that the deepest things cannot be earned by effort: then what is one supposed to do? The answers that follow describe a way of living rather than a task.

Dhritarashtra asks a follow-up: if this eternal knowledge is reached through brahmacarya and cannot be produced by any action, how does one actually reach the state of Brahman and immortality?

3.4 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

ye'smiṃlloke vijayantīha kāmānbrāhmīṃ sthitimanutitikṣamāṇāḥ | ta ātmānaṃ nirharantīha dehānmuñjādiṣīkāmiva sattvasaṃsthāḥ ||

Those in this world who conquer their desires, patiently enduring as they hold to the state of Brahman, grounded in purity, draw the Self out from the bodies here, as one draws the inner reed out of muñja grass.

Meaning today and context

Mastering one's desires, with patience rather than force, slowly makes it clear that who you are is not the same as your body and its cravings. That separation is quiet, careful work, like drawing a stalk out cleanly.

Sanatsujata answers: those who master their desires and patiently hold to the state of Brahman draw the Self out from the body, as one draws the inner stalk out of muñja grass.

3.5 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

śarīrametau kurutaḥ pitā mātā ca bhārata | ācāryaśāstā yā jātiḥ sā satyā sājarāmarā ||

Father and mother make this body, Bharata. But the birth that comes from the teacher's instruction, that is true; it is free of age and death.

Meaning today and context

Our parents give us life, and a good teacher can give us a second birth: a new way of seeing that stays with us long after the lessons end. This honours both, and says the gift of understanding outlasts the body.

Sanatsujata begins his account of brahmacarya as discipleship: parents give the body, but the birth one receives from a teacher's instruction is the true and lasting one.

3.6 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

ācāryayonimiha ye praviśya bhūtvā garbhaṃ brahmacaryaṃ caranti | ihaiva te śāstrakārā bhavanti prahāya dehaṃ paramaṃ yānti yogam ||

Those who enter the womb of the teacher here, become like an embryo and practise brahmacarya, become authors of the teaching in this very life, and on leaving the body they reach the highest yoga.

Brahmacarya here means the disciplined life of a student. It is not a demand for celibacy or self-denial for someone living as a householder.

Meaning today and context

Real learning asks for a time of openness and humility, like being formed in the womb, before one can teach or create. Those who give themselves fully to learning end up carrying the tradition forward.

Continuing the image of a second birth, Sanatsujata says those who enter the teacher's 'womb' as disciples and live in brahmacarya become masters of the teaching here and reach the highest union after death.

3.7 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

ya āvṛṇotyavitathena karṇā vṛtaṃ kurvannamṛtaṃ saṃprayacchan | taṃ manyeta pitaraṃ mātaraṃ ca tasmai na druhyetkṛtamasya jānan ||

The one who fills your two ears with truth, making what is right known and giving you the immortal — regard him as father and mother. Knowing what he has done for you, never betray him.

Meaning today and context

Someone who told you the truth when it mattered, and changed how you live, deserves lasting gratitude. Do not turn against people who have truly helped you grow.

Sanatsujata says the teacher who fills one's ears with truth and gives the immortal teaching should be regarded as father and mother, and never betrayed.

3.8 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

guruṃ śiṣyo nityamabhimanyamānaḥ svādhyāyamicchecchucirapramattaḥ | mānaṃ na kuryānna dadhīta roṣameṣa prathamo brahmacaryasya pādaḥ ||

The disciple, always honouring the teacher, pure and heedful, should be eager for study. He should not be proud or hold on to anger. This is the first quarter of brahmacarya.

Meaning today and context

Learning goes well when you respect those who teach you, stay alert and clean in habits, and leave pride and grudges at the door. Ego and resentment block learning more than lack of talent does.

Sanatsujata describes the first of the four 'quarters' of brahmacarya: the disciple's respect for the teacher, eagerness to study, purity, alertness, and freedom from pride and anger.

3.9 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

ācāryasya priyaṃ kuryātprāṇairapi dhanairapi | karmaṇā manasā vācā dvitīyaḥ pāda ucyate ||

He should do what is dear to the teacher, even with his life and his wealth, in deed, mind and speech. This is called the second quarter.

This describes the ancient ideal of a student's service. It is not a reason to hand over your money, safety or judgement to anyone claiming to be a guru. A genuine teacher does not demand wealth, obedience or harm to yourself.

Meaning today and context

In the old student's life, devotion to the teacher was total. Today the honest point is wholeheartedness: serve and learn with your actions, thoughts and words all pointing the same way.

The second quarter of brahmacarya: the disciple should do what pleases the teacher, in deed, thought and word, even at the cost of life and wealth.

3.10 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

samā gurau yathā vṛttirgurupatnyāṃ tathā bhavet | yathoktakārī priyakṛttṛtīyaḥ pāda ucyate ||

As one's conduct is toward the teacher, so should it be toward the teacher's wife. Doing as one is told and doing what pleases: this is called the third quarter.

Doing as one is told applies to a teacher's right guidance, never to anything harmful, exploitative or abusive. If a teacher or anyone in authority misuses trust, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181, Childline 1098).

Meaning today and context

Respect for a teacher extends to their household and the people around them. Reliability, doing what you said you would, is part of being a good student.

The third quarter of brahmacarya: behave toward the teacher's wife as toward the teacher, do as instructed, and do what pleases.

3.11 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

nācāryāyehopakṛtvā pravādaṃ prājñaḥ kurvīta naitadahaṃ karomi | itīva manyeta na bhāṣayeta sa vai caturtho brahmacaryasya pādaḥ ||

Having done a service for the teacher, the wise one should not announce it. He should think, as it were, 'It is not I who do this,' and should not get it talked about. That is the fourth quarter of brahmacarya.

Meaning today and context

Help given quietly stays clean. Once we start announcing our good deeds or waiting to be thanked, the service turns into a bid for credit.

The fourth quarter of brahmacarya: after serving the teacher, the wise disciple does not advertise it, does not think of himself as the doer, and does not get others to speak of it.

3.12 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

evaṃ vasantaṃ yadupaplaveddhanamācāryāya tadanuprayacchet | satāṃ vṛttiṃ bahuguṇāmevameti guroḥ putre bhavati ca vṛttireṣā ||

Whatever wealth comes to one living like this, he should hand it on to the teacher. In this way he reaches the conduct of the good, rich in virtues; and the same conduct holds toward the teacher's son.

This is about a student's gratitude in the ancient household of learning. It is not a reason to give your earnings to anyone who claims to be a guru; a genuine teacher never demands money. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

In the old system a student lived with the teacher and shared what came to him. The lasting point is generosity and gratitude toward those who taught us, and toward their families.

Sanatsujata adds that a disciple living this way should give the teacher whatever wealth comes to him; this is the many-sided conduct of good people, and it extends to the teacher's son.

3.13 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

evaṃ vasansarvato vardhatīha bahūnputrāṃllabhate ca pratiṣṭhām | varṣanti cāsmai pradiśo diśaśca vasantyasminbrahmacarye janāśca ||

Living like this he prospers here in every way; he gains many sons and a firm standing. The quarters and directions shower [blessings] on him, and people come to live with him in this brahmacarya.

Meaning today and context

A life of learning, humility and gratitude tends to draw good things and good people toward it. Others want to learn from and live near someone like that.

Sanatsujata describes the rewards of this disciplined life: prosperity, descendants, standing, blessings from every direction, and others who come to share the same way of life.

3.14 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

etena brahmacaryeṇa devā devatvamāpnuvan | ṛṣayaśca mahābhāgā brahmalokaṃ manīṣiṇaḥ ||

Through this brahmacarya the gods attained their godhood, and the greatly blessed, wise seers [reached] the world of Brahman.

Brahmacarya here is the disciplined life of learning; it is not a demand for celibacy or self-denial for a householder.

Meaning today and context

In the old view, every great achievement, even divine, rests on discipline. Steady self-discipline is what turns potential into something real.

Sanatsujata praises brahmacarya through myth: by it the gods became gods and the great seers reached the world of Brahman.

3.15 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

gandharvāṇāmanenaiva rūpamapsarasāmabhūt | etena brahmacaryeṇa sūryo ahnāya jāyate ||

By this alone the gandharvas and apsarases gained their beauty. Through this brahmacarya the sun is born to make the day.

Meaning today and context

The poet pictures discipline as the hidden order behind beauty and the daily rising of the sun. Regular, faithful practice is what keeps anything bright.

The praise of brahmacarya continues: by it the celestial musicians and nymphs gained their beauty, and by it the sun rises to make the day.

3.16 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

ya āśayetpāṭayeccāpi rājansarvaṃ śarīraṃ tapasā tapyamānaḥ | etenāsau bālyamatyeti vidvānmṛtyuṃ tathā rodhayatyantakāle ||

O king, one who, burning with austerity, makes the whole body his ground [of practice] and breaks through it — by this the wise man passes beyond childishness, and at the time of the end holds death back.

Tapas means discipline, not hurting or starving the body; this is not advice on fasting or self-harm. If you are thinking about death or harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Discipline here is the way a person grows out of childish, impulsive living into maturity. Someone who has grown up inwardly meets the end of life with less fear.

Sanatsujata says the wise one who disciplines the whole body through austerity passes beyond the childishness of ignorance and holds death back at the end.

3.17 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

antavantaḥ kṣatriya te jayanti lokāñjanāḥ karmaṇā nirmitena | brahmaiva vidvāṃstena abhyeti sarvaṃ nānyaḥ panthā ayanāya vidyate ||

People win, by what their actions build, worlds that come to an end, O kshatriya. The knower, through that [knowledge], reaches Brahman, which is everything. There is no other path to go by.

Meaning today and context

Everything we build by effort, a career, a reputation, a fortune, has an end. What does not end is seeing what we truly are; no achievement can substitute for that.

Sanatsujata contrasts the results of action with knowledge: worlds won by deeds come to an end, while the knower reaches Brahman, the whole; there is no other way.

3.18 Dhritarashtra to Sanatsujata

ābhāti śuklamiva lohitamiva atho kṛṣṇamathāñjanaṃ kādravaṃ vā | tadbrāhmaṇaḥ paśyati yo'tra vidvānkathaṃrūpaṃ tadamṛtamakṣaraṃ padam ||

That which the knowing brāhmaṇa sees here — does it shine as if white, or as if red, or black, or dark as collyrium, or tawny? Of what form is that immortal, imperishable state?

Meaning today and context

We naturally want to picture the highest truth as something we could see. The question sets up the answer that it has no colour or shape at all.

Dhritarashtra asks what the immortal, imperishable state that the wise brāhmaṇa sees actually looks like: white, red, black, dark, or tawny?

3.19 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

nābhāti śuklamiva lohitamiva atho kṛṣṇamāyasamarkavarṇam | na pṛthivyāṃ tiṣṭhati nāntarikṣe naitatsamudre salilaṃ bibharti ||

It does not shine as if white or as if red, nor black, nor iron-coloured, nor bright as the sun. It does not stand on the earth or in the sky; the ocean does not hold it as it holds its water.

Meaning today and context

The deepest reality is not one more object somewhere in the world. Looking for it the way we look for things will always miss it.

Sanatsujata answers by negation: it has no colour, white, red, black, iron-grey or sun-bright, and rests neither on earth, nor in the sky, nor in the ocean.

3.20 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

na tārakāsu na ca vidyudāśritaṃ na cābhreṣu dṛśyate rūpamasya | na cāpi vāyau na ca devatāsu na taccandre dṛśyate nota sūrye ||

It does not rest in the stars or in lightning; its form is not seen in the clouds, nor in the wind, nor in the gods. It is not seen in the moon, nor in the sun.

Meaning today and context

Even the grandest things we can see, the sun and the sky, are not it. What the sage points to is closer than any sight, and not an object at all.

The negations continue: its form is not found in the stars, lightning, clouds, wind, the gods, the moon or the sun.

3.21 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

naivarkṣu tanna yajuḥṣu nāpyatharvasu na caiva dṛśyatyamaleṣu sāmasu | rathaṃtare bārhate cāpi rājanmahāvrate naiva dṛśyeddhruvaṃ tat ||

It is not in the Rk verses, nor in the Yajus, nor in the Atharva; nor is it seen in the pure Saman chants. In the Rathantara and the Barhata, O king, and in the Mahavrata, that fixed [reality] is not seen.

Meaning today and context

Scripture and ritual can point toward the truth, but the truth is not the words themselves. Reciting or performing is not the same as knowing.

Sanatsujata says that this fixed reality is not seen even in the Vedic hymns and chants, the Rk, Yajus, Atharva and Saman, or in the great Rathantara, Barhata and Mahavrata chants.

3.22 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

apāraṇīyaṃ tamasaḥ parastāttadantako'pyeti vināśakāle | aṇīyarūpaṃ kṣuradhārayā tanmahacca rūpaṃ tvapi parvatebhyaḥ ||

It cannot be crossed over; it lies beyond darkness. Even Death, the Ender, goes into it at the time of destruction. Its form is finer than a razor's edge, and greater than the mountains.

Meaning today and context

What the sage describes is subtler than the finest thought and larger than anything we know; even death is held within it. That can make death itself feel less final and less frightening.

Sanatsujata describes Brahman positively: beyond darkness, impossible to cross, the place even Death enters at the end; finer than a razor's edge and vaster than mountains.

3.23 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

sā pratiṣṭhā tadamṛtaṃ lokāstadbrahma tadyaśaḥ | bhūtāni jajñire tasmātpralayaṃ yānti tatra ca ||

That is the foundation; that is the immortal; that is the worlds; that is Brahman; that is glory. From it beings were born, and into it they go at dissolution.

Meaning today and context

Everything that comes and goes rises from one ground and returns to it. Seeing life this way can soften the sharpness of beginnings and endings.

Sanatsujata names Brahman as the foundation of everything: the immortal, the worlds, glory; all beings are born from it and return to it.

3.24 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

anāmayaṃ tanmahadudyataṃ yaśo vāco vikārānkavayo vadanti | tasmiñjagatsarvamidaṃ pratiṣṭhitaṃ ye tadviduramṛtāste bhavanti ||

That is free from sickness, great, a glory raised on high. The wise call [the world's forms] modifications of speech. In it this whole world is established. Those who know it become immortal.

Meaning today and context

Much of what troubles us is labels and stories, words layered over what is. Beneath them is something untouched by sickness or loss, and knowing it frees a person from the fear of ending.

Sanatsujata closes the chapter: the sages call the world mere modifications of speech, names; this whole world rests on that flawless, great reality, and those who know it become immortal.
