That pure, great light, blazing, a great glory, which the gods worship, by which the sun shines: the yogins see that eternal Lord.

The light by which we see everything is not itself one of the things we see. In stillness, the yogins turn toward that light, and the Sanatsujatiya says it is the Lord.
Sanatsujata begins his final chapter on the vision of the Lord. Each verse ends with the refrain 'the yogins see that eternal Lord'. Here he names it as the bright, great light the gods worship and by which the sun shines.
From the pure one Brahman arises; by the pure one Brahman grows. That pure one, among the lights, unheated, gives heat; it is the heater. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

The source of all energy is itself untouched and unspent. Our own awareness is like that: it lights up every feeling without itself being burned by them.
Sanatsujata says Brahman arises from and grows by this pure light, which, itself unheated, heats all other lights.

[First] the waters, then out of the waters, in the midst of the flood, the two gods took their place in the mid-space. He, clothed in the paths that converge and the paths that spread apart, upholds both earth and heaven. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

The verse pictures one support beneath the whole moving universe, what comes together and what flies apart. Behind change, it says, something holds everything up.
In a dense, Vedic-style image Sanatsujata describes the Lord in the midst of the cosmic waters, where two gods rest in the mid-space, as the one who, clothed in converging and diverging paths, upholds earth and heaven.
The pure one upholds the two gods, earth and heaven, the directions and the world. From it the directions and the rivers flow; from it the great oceans were made. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

Everything that flows and spreads in the world comes from one source. A person who senses this feels less alone and less adrift.
Sanatsujata says the pure one supports the two gods, earth and heaven, the directions and the whole world; from it flow the rivers and the great oceans were formed.
Him who stands on the wheel of the chariot of the steadfast one, whose works never decay, the bannered, divine, ageless one, the horses carry through heaven. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

However fast the wheel turns, something at its centre stays still and does not age. Finding that still point inside is what the yogins are doing.
Sanatsujata pictures the Lord as the divine, ageless one who stands on the wheel of the chariot of the unchanging, carried across heaven by horses.

His form does not stand within any likeness; no one sees him with the eye. Those who know him in this way, with insight, with the mind and with the heart, become immortal. The yogins see that eternal Lord.
Meaning today and context
The deepest truth is not met through the eyes or through proof alone; it is known with understanding, attention and the heart together. Doubt because you can't see it is natural; the verse asks you to look another way.
Sanatsujata says the Lord has no likeness and cannot be seen with the eye; those who know him with insight, mind and heart become immortal.
[There is] a dreadful river with twelve streams, guarded by the gods; looking toward its honey, [beings] wander in it. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

Life pulls us along with its sweetness, and chasing that sweetness keeps us moving in a strong current. The yogins look past the honey to what is constant.
In an obscure image, Sanatsujata speaks of a fearsome river with twelve streams, guarded by the gods, where beings wander gazing at its honey; commonly taken as an image of worldly life and its pleasures.
Having gathered it for half a month, the bee drinks that honey. The Lord made it into an offering in all beings. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

What we gather and enjoy is, in this vision, also an offering the Lord has placed within every being. Enjoyment can be received as something given, not only grabbed.
Continuing the honey image, Sanatsujata says the bee gathers and drinks honey for half a month, and the Lord has made it into an offering within all beings.

Beings come to the tree of the world, take on new forms and scatter on their own paths. The image invites us to see our lives as one round in a larger movement, and to look for what does not come and go.

Sanatsujata gives an image of rebirth: wingless ones reach the golden-leaved aśvattha tree, grow wings there and fly off in all directions.
From the full they draw out the full; from the full they made the full. They take the full from the full, and the full alone remains. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

Sanatsujata gives the teaching of fullness, familiar from the Upanishads: from the full, the full is drawn and the full remains.

Even a great teacher says words fall short here. Not being able to explain the deepest things is no sign of failure; it is the nature of what is being pointed at.
Completing the previous verse, Sanatsujata says everything comes from that, and admits that he cannot describe each thing in turn.
Prāṇa swallows apāna; the moon swallows prāṇa; the sun swallows the moon; and the Supreme swallows the sun. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

Each thing is absorbed into something greater, until everything rests in the one beyond all. It is a picture of every lesser power finally resting in the highest.
Sanatsujata describes a chain of absorption: the in-breath swallows the out-breath, the moon swallows breath, the sun the moon, and the Supreme the sun.
The swan, rising from the water, does not lift out one foot. If it were to lift that ever-officiating [foot], there would be neither death nor immortality. The yogins see that eternal Lord.
Meaning today and context
The Lord keeps one foot in the world, and that is what keeps the world going. Beyond that, the very opposites of death and immortality fall away.
Sanatsujata uses the image of a swan (haṃsa, the Self) rising from water that never lifts one foot out; if that ever-sacrificing foot were lifted, there would be neither death nor immortality.

There is a core in us that even fire cannot consume. Knowing it does not stop hardship, but it does keep a person from being destroyed by it inwardly.
Sanatsujata says this great god, the Person, swallows fire; whoever knows that Person is not harmed in his self here.
Even if one spread his wings a thousand thousand times and flew on, though he were swift as the mind, he would come [only] to the centre within the centre. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

No amount of running, travelling or searching outside brings you to what you are looking for; it is at the centre of yourself. The search ends by turning inward.
Sanatsujata says that even a bird spreading its wings a thousand thousand times and flying as fast as the mind would only arrive at the centre within the centre: the Lord is found within, not by travelling.
His form does not stand within sight, yet those whose being is thoroughly purified see him. The kindly, wise one should see him with the mind. Those who take refuge in him become immortal. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

A clear, kind and honest mind sees what a cluttered one misses. Purifying intentions, more than gathering proofs, opens the way to the divine.
Sanatsujata says the Lord's form is not within sight, but those of purified being see him; the well-disposed wise person sees him with the mind, and those who take refuge in him become immortal.
As snakes hide in holes, mortals hide themselves behind their own learning and their own conduct. Foolish people are badly misled by them, as [those who] lead travellers astray on the road, to their danger. The yogins see that eternal Lord.
Meaning today and context
Polished learning and a pious manner can be a hiding place. Don't take outward show as proof of goodness, in others or in yourself; look at what people actually do.
Sanatsujata warns about hypocrisy: as snakes hide in holes, people hide themselves behind their training and conduct, and the naive are deceived by them as travellers are misled on the road into danger.
He who is ever beyond what is and what is not, for him there is no death; how then [can one speak of] immortality? Truth and untruth have their common tie in the Real; the source of being and of non-being is one alone. The yogins see that eternal Lord.
Meaning today and context
The deepest truth is beneath even the opposites we argue about, real and unreal, death and deathlessness. Seeing that one source can ease the anxious grip on either side.
Sanatsujata says that for the one beyond being and non-being there is no death, and so no question of immortality either; truth and untruth are bound in the Real, the single source of being and non-being.

Meaning today and context
Under every person's record of good and bad lies the same Self, equal in all. Seeing that sameness makes it harder to look down on anyone, and easier to forgive yourself.
Sanatsujata says this Self is not changed by good or bad deeds and is the same in all people; that sameness belongs to the immortal, and one joined to it should seek that honey.
Insults do not burn his heart, nor [the thought] 'I have not studied, I have not offered the fire-ritual.' His mind should take on the lightness of Brahman; the steady ones call this his wisdom. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

A mind settled in what is deepest becomes light: harsh words don't scorch it, and it isn't tormented by what it failed to do. That lightness is not carelessness; it is what wisdom feels like from inside.
Sanatsujata describes the one who knows: insults do not burn his heart, nor regret over study or rites left undone; his mind takes on the lightness of Brahman, and the steady call this wisdom.
One who in this way sees the Self in all beings, busy here and there in their many tasks — what should he grieve over after that?
If you have lost someone, your grief is real and deserves time and care; this verse does not dismiss mourning. If grief feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

When you see the same life in everyone, others stop being strangers or rivals, and much of the sorrow of separation eases. It does not forbid mourning; it gives a wider ground to stand on.
Sanatsujata says one who sees the Self in all beings, engaged in their many tasks here and there, has nothing left to grieve over.
As [is the use of] a well when water floods everywhere, so are all the Vedas to the brāhmaṇa who knows.

Books and methods are like wells that bring water to those who need it. Once you have reached the source they point to, you don't need to cling to them, though you need not despise them either.
Sanatsujata gives the image also found in the Bhagavad Gita (2.46): for one who knows Brahman, all the Vedas are like a small well when water floods everywhere. Brāhmaṇa here means the knower of Brahman.

A half-verse in which Sanatsujata, speaking as the Self, says the Self alone is his abode and his birth; he is the one taught in the Vedas, established in the unageing.
Finer than the finest, of kindly mind, I am awake in all beings. They know [me as] the father of all beings, set within the lotus [of the heart].
