Neither the Saman chants, nor the Rig verses, nor the Yajus formulas protect him from the sin of his deeds, wise one. I do not tell you anything false.

Knowing scripture, or performing rites, does not cancel what we do to others. We answer for our actions, however learned or pious we appear.
Sanatsujata answers firmly: neither the Sama chants, nor the Rig verses, nor the Yajus formulas protect a person from the sin of his actions.
The hymns do not carry across from wrongdoing the deceiver who lives by deceit. As birds leave the nest once their wings have grown, the hymns abandon him at the time of the end.

Using religion as a cover for dishonesty does not work. When it truly matters, outward piety without honesty gives no support at all.
Sanatsujata adds a vivid image: the Vedic hymns do not carry a deceiver past his wrongdoing; at the time of death they leave him, as fledged birds leave the nest.
Austerity practised in this world shows its fruit elsewhere. These worlds of the brahmins are secured by austerity that has prospered.

Disciplined effort often bears fruit later and in places we can't see yet. Its value lies in its quality, not in quick results.
Sanatsujata replies that austerity practised in this world bears fruit in another; the worlds of the brahmins rest on austerity that has truly prospered.
There are twelve faults, beginning with anger, that affect austerity, and here six [kinds of men] beginning with the cruel, O king; and twelve virtues, beginning with dharma, set out in the scriptures and known to the twice-born.

Before working on ourselves, it helps to name clearly what spoils effort and what strengthens it. This verse sets out that map.
Sanatsujata outlines his answer: austerity can be spoiled by twelve faults beginning with anger and six beginning with cruelty, and is made whole by twelve virtues beginning with dharma, known in the scriptures.

Anger, desire, greed and delusion, the thirst for gain, [weak] pity and fault-finding, pride and grief, longing, jealousy and contempt: these twelve human faults a man should always avoid.
Grief is listed here as a fault in the sense of being consumed by it; mourning a loss is natural and the verse does not dismiss it. If grief feels unbearable, Tele-MANAS 14416.

This is a clear list to check ourselves against. Most of our suffering, and much of the harm we do, comes from one of these twelve.
Sanatsujata lists the twelve human faults that must always be avoided.
The boaster, the greedy, the arrogant, the one who nurses anger, the fickle, and the one who does not protect [those in his care]: these six, when they gain [the means], practise wicked ways on people; the good do not, even in great hardship.

Power reveals character. Bragging, greed, arrogance, grudges, inconstancy and neglect of those who depend on us turn into harm once we have the means; good people hold to their decency even when times are hard.
Sanatsujata describes six kinds of people who, when they gain power or means, do wrong: the boaster, the greedy, the arrogant, the grudge-holder, the fickle and the one who fails to protect.
One who knows only sensual pleasure, one who thrives on hostility, one who regrets what he has given, the miser, the weak in will, one who praises only his own faction, and one who hates women: these are seven others of cruel character.

Cruelty takes quiet forms too: living only for pleasure, feeding on conflict, begrudging generosity, clannishness, and contempt for women. The verse names these plainly as faults to avoid.
Sanatsujata lists seven more kinds of cruel people, including those who know only pleasure, who thrive on hostility, regret their gifts, praise only their own group and hate women.

Dharma, truth, self-control and austerity, freedom from envy, modesty, forbearance and not finding fault, sacrifice, giving, steadiness and learning: these twelve are the great vows of a brahmin.
'Brahmin' here means a person of learning, truthfulness and self-restraint, as these chapters themselves define it; it is about conduct, never birth, and must not be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Here is the positive list: right conduct, honesty, self-restraint, discipline, freedom from envy, modesty, patience, not finding fault, service, generosity, steadiness and learning. Any one of them, practised well, changes a life.
Sanatsujata now lists the twelve great vows, the virtues of a true brahmin.
Whoever never strays from these twelve could rule the whole of this earth. One distinguished by three, two, or even one of them should be known as one who has nothing of his own.

Even one real virtue, deeply lived, frees us from a great deal of possessiveness. We don't need to be perfect to begin.
Sanatsujata says one who never departs from these twelve virtues could rule the whole earth; one who excels in even three, two or one should be known as having nothing he calls his own.

Self-control is [free of] eighteen faults: going against what should and should not be done, untruth and fault-finding, desire and the pursuit of gain, and longing;
दम (संयम) अठारह दोषों से (रहित) होता है: करने और न करने योग्य के विपरीत चलना, असत्य और दोषदृष्टि, काम और धन की लालसा, तथा स्पृहा;
Meaning today and context
Self-control is more than resisting temptation; it means not twisting right and wrong, not lying, not picking faults, and not being ruled by wanting.
Sanatsujata begins listing the eighteen faults whose absence makes up true self-control (dama).
apasmāraḥ sātivādastathā saṃbhāvanātmani | etairvimukto doṣairyaḥ sa damaḥ sadbhirucyate ||
forgetfulness, excessive talk, and self-conceit. One who is free of these faults: that, the good say, is self-control.
Meaning today and context
Talking too much and thinking too highly of ourselves are quiet failures of discipline. True self-control shows as a calm, unpretentious, attentive person.
Sanatsujata completes the eighteen faults and concludes: one freed from them is what the good call self-control.
śreyāṃstu ṣaḍvidhastyāgaḥ priyaṃ prāpya na hṛṣyati | apriye tu samutpanne vyathāṃ jātu na cārcchati ||
The better renunciation is sixfold. [First,] on gaining what is dear, one does not exult; [second,] when what is unwelcome arises, one never falls into anguish.
Meaning today and context
Renunciation starts not with giving things away but with not being thrown about by gains and losses. Not getting carried away by good news, and not collapsing at bad news, is itself a kind of letting go.
Sanatsujata describes the better, sixfold renunciation (tyaga), beginning with two marks: not exulting at getting what one likes, and not falling into anguish when the unpleasant comes.

Loved ones, wife and sons, and whatever else a request may be for: what a worthy person asks for should be granted. One even says the word that is hard to say. That is held to be the third quality.
Spouses and children are people, not possessions; this ancient verse must never be read as permission to give away, trade or control family members. It is about one's own clinging.
Meaning today and context
Real generosity sometimes means giving what is dear to us, or agreeing to what is hard. The heart of the verse is freedom from clinging, not the giving away of people.
Sanatsujata gives the third form of renunciation, a hard and obscure verse about giving to a worthy person who asks, even what is dear and hard to give up.
tyaktairdravyairyo bhavati nopayuṅkte ca kāmataḥ | na ca karmasu taddhīnaḥ śiṣyabuddhirnaro yathā | sarvaireva guṇairyukto dravyavānapi yo bhavet ||
One who [is content] with things given up and does not enjoy them out of desire; who does not, for that reason, fall short in his work, a man with the mind of a student; and one who, even if he has wealth, is endowed with all the virtues.
Meaning today and context
Detachment doesn't mean becoming lazy or withdrawing from work. You can have wealth and still be humble, keep working well, and not be ruled by wanting.
Sanatsujata describes further forms of renunciation: living content with what one has given up, not using things out of desire, not becoming slack in work, staying humble like a student, and keeping virtue even when wealthy.
Heedfulness has eight faults; one should avoid them: [being carried off] by the five senses and by the mind, O Bharata, and by the past and the future. One freed from these is happy.
Meaning today and context
Our attention leaks through the senses, the restless mind, and endless replaying of the past or worrying about the future. Coming back to the present, again and again, is where peace begins.
Sanatsujata says heedfulness (apramada) has eight faults to avoid: those from the five senses, from the mind, and from past and future; free of these, one is happy.
doṣairetairvimuktaṃ tu guṇairetaiḥ samanvitam | etatsamṛddhamapyṛddhaṃ tapo bhavati kevalam | yanmāṃ pṛcchasi rājendra kiṃ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi ||
Austerity freed from these faults and endowed with these virtues becomes successful, truly successful and pure. You asked me this, king of kings; what more do you wish to hear?
Meaning today and context
Discipline is measured not by how hard it is but by what it frees us from and what it grows in us.
Sanatsujata sums up: austerity free of these faults and endowed with these virtues becomes successful, truly successful and pure; he asks the king what more he wishes to hear.

'Brahmin' here means a person of learning, truthfulness and self-restraint, as these chapters themselves define it; it is about conduct, never birth, and must not be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Ranking people by how much they have studied misses the point. The real question is what makes a person genuinely wise and trustworthy.
Dhritarashtra continues: some know two Vedas, some one, some none. Which of them should he recognise as a true brahmin?
Through not knowing the one Veda, the Vedas became many. Of the one Truth, O king of kings, only a rare one is established in the Truth. Thus, without casting the Veda aside, they set their understanding on the Great.
Meaning today and context
Many paths, books and schools are attempts to say one truth. We don't need to throw away tradition; we need to look through it to what it points at.
Sanatsujata answers: the Vedas became many through ignorance of the one Veda, the one Truth; rare is the one established in that Truth, and such people, without discarding the Veda, set their understanding on the Great.
Giving, study and sacrifice: these too may be set going by greed. For those who slip from truth, their resolve becomes false.
Meaning today and context
Even good acts like charity, learning and worship can be done for selfish gain. When we lose touch with honesty, our good intentions quietly turn hollow.
Sanatsujata warns that giving, study and sacrifice can be driven by greed; for those who slip from truth, their very intentions become false.
So let sacrifice be performed through holding firmly to truth alone. For one it is by the mind, for another by speech, for another by action. The person whose resolve is fulfilled is master of his resolves.
Meaning today and context
Whatever we offer, in thought, word or deed, should stand on honesty. When mind, speech and action line up with truth, our intentions gain real power.
Sanatsujata says sacrifice should rest on a firm hold on truth; some offer it in mind, some in speech, some in action; the person whose intentions are realised commands his intentions.

Meaning today and context
When our resolve wavers, a commitment, a vow, helps hold us steady. Truth is the ground of all goodness; understanding shows itself directly, while disciplined effort often bears fruit unseen.
A compressed verse: Sanatsujata speaks of keeping a vow of consecration when one's resolve is unsteady, says the word satya comes from a root (sat, 'what is') and is the highest for the good, and contrasts direct knowledge with the hidden fruit of austerity.

Learning and eloquence are not the same as integrity. Judge people, and choose teachers, by whether they are truthful, not by how much they know or how well they speak.
Sanatsujata tells the king not to count someone a brahmin merely for reading much or talking well; only one who never departs from truth is a brahmin.

Sanatsujata says the Vedic hymns were sung of old by Atharvan, the creation of the seers; those who merely study them think they know the hymns but do not know what the Veda is meant to make known.

There is no one who [fully] knows the Vedas; or someone may understand the Vedas, O king. One who knows the Vedas does not [thereby] know the knowable; but one who stands in truth knows the knowable.

Truth is reached by living truthfully, not only by studying. A person who is honest through and through understands more than a scholar who is not.

Sanatsujata says that in seeking That (Brahman, or the Self), one need not travel in any direction: east, south, west, across, or anywhere at all.

Becoming silent, one should sit in meditation, not stirring even with the mind. Then Brahman, which dwells within his inner self, comes forth to him.
Long or intensive silent meditation can bring up distressing experiences; if you have trauma or severe depression, practise with guidance. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Stillness is not empty. Sitting quietly and letting the mind settle, without chasing thoughts, opens us to something already present within.
Sanatsujata describes the practice: sit in silence, not stirring even in the mind; then Brahman, which rests in one's inner self, turns toward one.

One becomes a muni through silence, not by living in the forest. But one who knows that Imperishable is called the best of munis.

Spiritual life is not about where you live or how you look. Inner quiet, and knowing what does not perish, make a sage, at home or anywhere.
Sanatsujata explains what makes a muni (sage): silence (mauna), not living in the forest; the one who knows the Imperishable is the best of sages.
By explaining all things one is called a grammarian [an analyst]. The man who sees the worlds directly becomes all-seeing.

Real expertise is understanding things as they are, not just knowing their names. Direct seeing goes further than any amount of analysis.
Sanatsujata plays on words: one who analyses (vyakarana) all things is a vaiyakarana (grammarian, analyst), and one who sees the worlds directly becomes all-seeing.

Standing in truth, O kshatriya, the brahmin sees Brahman. I tell you this, knowing it, in keeping with the order of the Vedas.
'Brahmin' here means a person of learning, truthfulness and self-restraint, as these chapters themselves define it; it is about conduct, never birth, and must not be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Truthfulness is not just a moral rule; it is the ground on which deeper understanding stands. Living honestly makes it possible to see what is real.
Sanatsujata closes this chapter: standing in truth, the true brahmin sees Brahman; he speaks this from his own knowledge, in keeping with the Vedas.
