Chapter 8 (Mahābhārata 5.40)

8.1 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yo'bhyarthitaḥ sadbhirasajjamānaḥ karotyarthaṃ śaktimahāpayitvā | kṣipraṃ yaśastaṃ samupaiti santamalaṃ prasannā hi sukhāya santaḥ ||

One who, when asked by good people, does what they need without clinging to it and without holding back any of his strength, quickly wins fame; for the good, once pleased, are enough to bring happiness.

Meaning today and context

When a good person asks for help, give it wholeheartedly and without making a show of it. The goodwill of decent people is worth more than any reward.

In the last part of his night counsel, Vidura tells Dhritarashtra what kind of person quickly wins a good name: one who helps good people readily and fully when they ask.

8.2 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

mahāntamapyarthamadharmayuktaṃ yaḥ saṃtyajatyanupākruṣṭa eva | sukhaṃ sa duḥkhānyavamucya śete jīrṇāṃ tvacaṃ sarpa ivāvamucya ||

One who gives up even great wealth that is tied to unrighteousness, before anyone has accused him, sleeps in peace, freed of his troubles, like a snake that has shed its old skin.

Meaning today and context

Money from a dishonest source is a weight you carry. Letting it go, before you are caught or shamed, brings a lightness and sleep that no amount of such money can buy.

Vidura praises the person who walks away from wealth gained through wrongdoing, even before anyone blames him for it.

8.3 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anṛtaṃ ca samutkarṣe rājagāmi ca paiśunam | guroścālīkanirbandhaḥ samāni brahmahatyayā ||

Lying to raise oneself up, tale-bearing that reaches the king's ears, and stubbornly deceiving one's teacher: these are equal to killing a brahmin.

Meaning today and context

Lying to get ahead, carrying gossip to those in power to damage someone, and deceiving the person who teaches you are serious wrongs. They destroy trust at its root.

Vidura names three wrongs of speech that the tradition counts as gravely as the worst of sins.

8.4 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

asūyaikapadaṃ mṛtyurativādaḥ śriyo vadhaḥ | aśuśrūṣā tvarā ślāghā vidyāyāḥ śatravastrayaḥ ||

Envy is death in a single word; arrogant, excessive speech is the slaying of fortune. Unwillingness to listen and serve, haste, and self-praise: these three are the enemies of learning.

Meaning today and context

Envy eats you from inside, and loose, boastful talk ruins what you have built. If you want to learn, listen patiently, don't rush, and stop praising yourself.

Vidura lists what destroys a person, his fortune, and his learning.

8.5 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sukhārthinaḥ kuto vidyā nāsti vidyārthinaḥ sukham | sukhārthī vā tyajedvidyāṃ vidyārthī vā sukhaṃ tyajet ||

Where is learning for one who seeks comfort? There is no comfort for one who seeks learning. Let the comfort-seeker give up learning, or the learning-seeker give up comfort.

Giving up comfort means giving up distraction and idleness, not sleep, food, rest or health. Exhausting yourself is not what the verse asks. If exam stress feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Real learning asks for effort and some sacrifice of ease and distraction. You have to choose what matters more to you right now.

Vidura states the well-known maxim that comfort and learning pull in opposite directions.

8.6 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nāgnistṛpyati kāṣṭhānāṃ nāpagānāṃ mahodadhiḥ | nāntakaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ na puṃsāṃ vāmalocanā ||

Fire is never sated with wood, nor the great ocean with rivers, nor Death with all beings, nor men with fair-eyed women.

The last line speaks from a man's point of view of its time and treats women as objects of desire. It is about the man's craving, and must never be used to blame, objectify or control women.

Meaning today and context

Desire fed is desire grown. Some hungers are never filled by more of the same; they have to be seen and restrained.

Vidura gives four images of things that are never satisfied, to show that craving has no natural end.

8.7 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

āśā dhṛtiṃ hanti samṛddhimantakaḥ krodhaḥ śriyaṃ hanti yaśaḥ kadaryatā | apālanaṃ hanti paśūṃśca rājannekaḥ kruddho brāhmaṇo hanti rāṣṭram ||

Endless expectation kills steadiness; death kills prosperity; anger kills fortune; miserliness kills good name; neglect kills cattle; and one angered brahmin, O king, destroys a kingdom.

The line on the angered brahmin is a warning to a king not to wrong the learned and upright; it is not a claim that any birth group stands above others.

Meaning today and context

Constant hoping and wanting wears down patience; anger burns away what you have; stinginess ruins your name; whatever you don't tend, you lose. And wronging a wise, principled person can bring down even the powerful.

Vidura lists what destroys each good thing, ending with the danger of angering a learned brahmin, a warning to Dhritarashtra.

8.8 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ajaśca kāṃsyaṃ ca rathaśca nityaṃ madhvākarṣaḥ śakuniḥ śrotriyaśca | vṛddho jñātiravasanno vayasya etāni te santu gṛhe sadaiva ||

A goat, bronze, a chariot, honey, a bird, a learned Veda-knower, an aged kinsman, and a friend fallen on hard times: may these always be in your home.

Meaning today and context

Among the things a good home keeps is room for people: an elderly relative and a friend who has fallen on bad days. A household is measured by whom it shelters.

Vidura lists what should always be kept in a household, including people who need shelter.

8.9 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ajokṣā candanaṃ vīṇā ādarśo madhusarpiṣī | viṣamaudumbaraṃ śaṅkhaḥ svarṇaṃ nābhiśca rocanā ||

A goat, a bull, sandalwood, a vīṇā, a mirror, honey and ghee, poison (some read it as water), a copper vessel, a conch, gold, musk, and yellow orpiment:

Meaning today and context

A list of things the household of that age considered auspicious and useful for worship and hospitality.

Vidura continues the list of auspicious things to be kept in a home, a list completed in the next verse.

8.10 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

gṛhe sthāpayitavyāni dhanyāni manurabravīt | devabrāhmaṇapūjārthamatithīnāṃ ca bhārata ||

These auspicious things, Manu said, should be kept in the home, for the worship of gods and brahmins and for guests, O Bharata.

Meaning today and context

A home should be ready to honour what is sacred and to welcome a guest well. Hospitality is planned for, not improvised.

Vidura completes the list, saying Manu declared these things auspicious, to be kept at home for worship and for guests.

8.11 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

idaṃ ca tvāṃ sarvaparaṃ bravīmi puṇyaṃ padaṃ tāta mahāviśiṣṭam | na jātu kāmānna bhayānna lobhāddharmaṃ tyajejjīvitasyāpi hetoḥ ||

And this I tell you as the highest of all, a holy and most excellent state, my dear: never abandon dharma out of desire, out of fear, or out of greed, not even to save your life.

This is about holding to what is right under pressure, not about giving up one's life. If you are in crisis or thinking of ending your life, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The three things that most often push us off the right path are wanting something, fearing something, and greed. Whatever the pressure, hold on to what is right.

Vidura now gives Dhritarashtra what he calls the highest teaching of all: never abandon dharma.

8.12 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nityo dharmaḥ sukhaduḥkhe tvanitye nityo jīvo dhāturasya tvanityaḥ | tyaktvānityaṃ pratitiṣṭhasva nitye saṃtuṣya tvaṃ toṣaparo hi lābhaḥ ||

Dharma is eternal; pleasure and pain are passing. The living self is eternal; its bodily cause is passing. Leave the passing and stand firm in the eternal. Be content, for contentment is the highest gain.

Meaning today and context

Good and bad moods, gains and losses all come and go. Root yourself in what lasts, your values and your deeper self, and learn to be content; that is the real wealth.

Vidura explains why dharma should be held above everything: it is lasting, while pleasure, pain and the body pass.

8.13 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

mahābalānpaśya mahānubhāvānpraśāsya bhūmiṃ dhanadhānyapūrṇām | rājyāni hitvā vipulāṃśca bhogāngatānnarendrānvaśamantakasya ||

See the mighty, majestic kings who ruled the earth full of wealth and grain: leaving behind their kingdoms and vast pleasures, they have all gone under the power of Death.

Meaning today and context

Everyone, however powerful or rich, leaves everything behind. Remembering this helps us hold possessions and status lightly and care about how we live.

Vidura asks Dhritarashtra to look at the great kings of the past, all of whom death has taken.

8.14 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

mṛtaṃ putraṃ duḥkhapuṣṭaṃ manuṣyā utkṣipya rājansvagṛhānnirharanti | taṃ muktakeśāḥ karuṇaṃ rudantaścitāmadhye kāṣṭhamiva kṣipanti ||

When a son, raised with so much hardship, dies, people lift him up, O king, and carry him out of their own home; with hair unbound, weeping piteously, they place him on the pyre as if he were wood.

Grief: acknowledge the loss first. This verse names the pain of mourning; it does not tell a bereaved parent to stop grieving or that their child was 'only wood'. If grief becomes unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The verse does not hide how terrible loss is: parents weep and still must let go. It names the pain honestly, and reminds us that no one we love can be held on to forever.

Vidura describes a funeral to make the king face the reality of death: even a beloved son is carried out and given to the fire.

8.15 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anyo dhanaṃ pretagatasya bhuṅkte vayāṃsi cāgniśca śarīradhātūn | dvābhyāmayaṃ saha gacchatyamutra puṇyena pāpena ca veṣṭyamānaḥ ||

Others enjoy the wealth of the one who has died; birds and fire consume the elements of his body. He goes to the next world with just two companions, wrapped in his merit and his sin.

For someone grieving, acknowledge the loss first. Speaking of the dead person's 'merit and sin' is not a judgement on someone who has just died.

Meaning today and context

What we own stays behind; what we have done goes with us. The way we treat others is the only thing that is truly ours.

Vidura says that after death others take one's wealth and the elements take the body; only one's good and bad deeds go along.

8.16 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

utsṛjya vinivartante jñātayaḥ suhṛdaḥ sutāḥ | agnau prāstaṃ tu puruṣaṃ karmānveti svayaṃkṛtam ||

Relatives, friends and sons leave him and turn back; but the man laid in the fire is followed by the deeds he himself has done.

Grief: acknowledge the loss first. Turning back from the pyre is the hard duty of mourners, not a sign that they did not love; the verse does not dismiss mourning. If grief becomes unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Those who love us can walk with us only so far. What we do with our life is the one companion that never turns back, so it is worth living well now.

Vidura continues: at the cremation ground even family and friends must turn back; only one's own deeds follow.

8.17 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

asmāllokādūrdhvamamuṣya cādho mahattamastiṣṭhati hyandhakāram | tadvai mahāmohanamindriyāṇāṃ budhyasva mā tvāṃ pralabheta rājan ||

Above this world and below the next lies a vast and deep darkness. Know it as the great bewilderment of the senses; O king, do not let it deceive you.

Meaning today and context

The real darkness to fear is being carried away by the senses until we lose sight of what is right. Stay awake to it while there is time.

Vidura warns of the great darkness that lies beyond this world, which is the delusion of the senses, and urges the king not to be caught by it.

8.18 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

If you can hear all these words properly and act on them, you will win the highest fame in the world of the living, and you will have no fear here or hereafter.

Meaning today and context

Good advice helps only when it is acted on. Living by what you know is right brings both respect and a mind free of fear.

Vidura tells the king what he will gain if he truly hears and acts on this counsel.

8.19 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ātmā nadī bhārata puṇyatīrthā satyodakā dhṛtikūlā damormiḥ | tasyāṃ snātaḥ pūyate puṇyakarmā puṇyo hyātmā nityamambho'mbha eva ||

The self is a river, O Bharata, with holy bathing places: truth is its water, steadiness its banks, self-control its waves. One who does good deeds and bathes in it is purified; for the self is holy and ever pure, as water is ever water.

Meaning today and context

Purity is not found only in outer rituals or pilgrimages. It comes from truthfulness, steadiness and self-control within you.

Vidura describes the self as a sacred river: one does not need distant pilgrimages to be purified.

8.20 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kāmakrodhagrāhavatīṃ pañcendriyajalāṃ nadīm | kṛtvā dhṛtimayīṃ nāvaṃ janmadurgāṇi saṃtara ||

This river has desire and anger for its crocodiles and the five senses for its water. Make a boat of steadiness and cross the hard passages of birth.

Meaning today and context

Desire and anger are the real dangers in the stream of life, and the senses keep pulling us. Patience and steadiness are what carry us through.

Vidura extends the river image: life is a river to be crossed on a boat made of steadiness.

8.21 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

prajñāvṛddhaṃ dharmavṛddhaṃ svabandhuṃ vidyāvṛddhaṃ vayasā cāpi vṛddham | kāryākārye pūjayitvā prasādya yaḥ saṃpṛcchenna sa muhyetkadā cit ||

One who honours and pleases a kinsman who is mature in wisdom, in dharma, in learning and in years, and then asks him what should and should not be done, is never confused.

Meaning today and context

When unsure, go to someone wise, good and experienced, approach them with respect, and ask. Good counsel saves you from many mistakes.

Vidura says that one who respectfully consults the wise and experienced before acting is never confused.

8.22 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dhṛtyā śiśnodaraṃ rakṣetpāṇipādaṃ ca cakṣuṣā | cakṣuḥśrotre ca manasā mano vācaṃ ca karmaṇā ||

With steadiness guard your sexual urges and your stomach; guard hands and feet with your eyes; eyes and ears with your mind; and mind and speech with your actions.

Meaning today and context

Self-control works in layers: patience over appetites, attention over what we do, a watchful mind over what we take in, and good conduct over what we think and say.

Vidura gives a chain of self-guarding: each faculty is protected by a higher one.

8.23 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nityodakī nityayajñopavītī nityasvādhyāyī patitānnavarjī | ṛtaṃ bruvangurave karma kurvanna brāhmaṇaścyavate brahmalokāt ||

A brahmin who daily performs his water rites, always wears the sacred thread, studies every day, avoids the food of the fallen, speaks truth, and does his teacher's work, does not fall from the world of Brahman.

The varṇa verses describe roles as understood in their time. Read them as duties grounded in qualities and conduct, never in birth; they must never be used to rank people, assign anyone a station or worth, or exclude anyone. 'Food of the fallen' is not a rule about whom to eat with.

Meaning today and context

For anyone whose role is learning and teaching, the marks of integrity are daily discipline, steady study, truthfulness and respect for one's teacher.

Vidura begins describing the duties of the four varṇas, starting with the brahmin's discipline of study, truth and service to the teacher.

8.24 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

adhītya vedānparisaṃstīrya cāgnīniṣṭvā yajñaiḥ pālayitvā prajāśca | gobrāhmaṇārthe śastrapūtāntarātmā hataḥ saṃgrāme kṣatriyaḥ svargameti ||

A kshatriya who has studied the Vedas, tended the sacred fires, offered sacrifices and protected his subjects, his inner self purified by weapons, slain in battle for the sake of cows and brahmins, goes to heaven.

The varṇa verses describe roles as understood in their time; read them by qualities and conduct, never birth, and never to assign anyone a station or worth. Praise of dying in battle is not a justification for violence, nor for harming anyone in the name of protecting a group.

Meaning today and context

For those whose role is to protect, the measure is learning, service and protecting the vulnerable, even at great personal cost.

Vidura describes the kshatriya's duty: learning, sacrifice, protecting the people, and dying in battle for the protection of the weak.

8.25 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vaiśyo'dhītya brāhmaṇānkṣatriyāṃśca dhanaiḥ kāle saṃvibhajyāśritāṃśca | tretāpūtaṃ dhūmamāghrāya puṇyaṃ pretya svarge devasukhāni bhuṅkte ||

A vaishya who has studied, and in due time shares his wealth with brahmins, kshatriyas and those who depend on him, and breathes the holy smoke of the three sacred fires, enjoys after death the joys of the gods in heaven.

The varṇa verses describe roles as understood in their time; read them by qualities and conduct, never birth, and never to assign anyone a station or worth. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

For those whose role is trade and wealth, the measure is learning, and sharing what they earn on time with those who depend on them and with society.

Vidura describes the vaishya's duty: study, and sharing wealth in good time with others and with dependents.

8.26 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

brahmakṣatraṃ vaiśyavarṇaṃ ca śūdraḥ krameṇaitānnyāyataḥ pūjayānaḥ | tuṣṭeṣveteṣvavyatho dagdhapāpastyaktvā dehaṃ svargasukhāni bhuṅkte ||

A shudra who duly honours the brahmin, the kshatriya and the vaishya in turn, when they are satisfied, is free of distress, his sins burnt away, and after leaving the body enjoys the joys of heaven.

This verse reflects the social order of its time, in which one group was placed in service of the others. It must never be used to rank people by birth, assign anyone a station or worth, or demean or exclude anyone. Every person and every honest kind of work has equal dignity. Vidura himself was born to a servant woman and was honoured for his wisdom.

Meaning today and context

Read today, the lasting point is that honest service, done fairly and well, is itself a path to worth and peace. It says nothing about who should serve whom by birth.

Vidura describes the shudra's duty as rightly honouring and serving the other three varṇas.

8.27 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

cāturvarṇyasyaiṣa dharmastavokto hetuṃ cātra bruvato me nibodha | kṣātrāddharmāddhīyate pāṇḍuputrastaṃ tvaṃ rājanrājadharme niyuṅkṣva ||

Thus I have told you the duty of the four varṇas; now hear my reason for telling it. The son of Pandu is falling away from his kshatriya duty; O king, establish him in the duty of a king.

The varṇa framework here reflects its time; read duties by qualities and conduct, never birth.

Meaning today and context

Vidura's long counsel ends in one concrete request: give the Pandavas their rightful share. Wisdom is meant to lead to a just action.

Having described the four varṇas, Vidura comes to his point: Yudhishthira is being kept from his rightful royal duty, and Dhritarashtra should restore it.

8.28 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

evametadyathā māṃ tvamanuśāsasi nityadā | mamāpi ca matiḥ saumya bhavatyevaṃ yathāttha mām ||

It is just as you always instruct me, gentle one; my own mind too thinks the same as you tell me.

Meaning today and context

Agreeing with good advice is the easy part.

Dhritarashtra replies that he agrees with everything Vidura says.

8.29 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

sā tu buddhiḥ kṛtāpyevaṃ pāṇḍavānprati me sadā | duryodhanaṃ samāsādya punarviparivartate ||

Yet though my mind is always made up this way towards the Pandavas, when I meet Duryodhana it turns around again.

Meaning today and context

We often know what is right but give way when someone we are attached to pulls the other way. Seeing this honestly is the first step to standing firm.

Dhritarashtra admits that his resolve to do right by the Pandavas collapses whenever he faces his son Duryodhana.

8.30 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

na diṣṭamabhyatikrāntuṃ śakyaṃ martyena kena cit | diṣṭameva kṛtaṃ manye pauruṣaṃ tu nirarthakam ||

No mortal can overcome what is destined. I think destiny alone is the doer; human effort is meaningless.

These are Dhritarashtra's words, an excuse the epic shows to be self-deception; they are not the text's teaching. Effort matters. If you feel nothing you do can make a difference, reach out to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Blaming fate is a comfortable way of avoiding a hard choice. Dhritarashtra's fatalism, after hearing all of Vidura's counsel, is what led to the war.

Dhritarashtra ends by blaming fate: no one can overcome destiny, so human effort is useless. This is his excuse, not Vidura's teaching.
