Chapter 7 (Mahābhārata 5.39)

7.1 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

anīśvaro'yaṃ puruṣo bhavābhave sūtraprotā dārumayīva yoṣā | dhātrā tu diṣṭasya vaśe kilāyaṃ tasmādvada tvaṃ śravaṇe dhṛto'ham ||

A man is not the master of his own rise and fall; like a wooden doll strung on threads, he is held in the power of what the Ordainer has fixed. So speak on; I am intent on listening.

Meaning today and context

Saying 'it is all fate' can be honest humility, but it can also be a way to avoid a decision we already know we should make. Dhritarashtra blames destiny while he still holds the power to act.

Dhritarashtra, still troubled, tells Vidura that a person is not master of his own rise and fall but moves like a puppet on strings, and asks him to go on speaking.

7.2 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

aprāptakālaṃ vacanaṃ bṛhaspatirapi bruvan | labhate buddhyavajñānamavamānaṃ ca bhārata ||

Even Brihaspati, if he speaks words out of season, earns contempt for his intelligence and dishonour, Bharata.

Meaning today and context

Good advice at the wrong moment is not heard, and can make even a wise person look foolish. Timing is part of wisdom: wait until the listener can receive what you have to say.

Vidura begins his reply: even the wisest speaker is despised if he speaks at the wrong time.

7.3 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

priyo bhavati dānena priyavādena cāparaḥ | mantraṃ mūlabalenānyo yaḥ priyaḥ priya eva saḥ ||

One becomes dear by giving, another by pleasant speech, another by the strength of counsel and roots; but one who is truly dear is dear in any case.

Meaning today and context

People win affection through gifts, kind words or usefulness, but real love does not need a reason. Notice which of your relationships rest on what you give, and which simply rest on who you are.

Vidura describes the different ways people become dear to others.

7.4 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dveṣyo na sādhurbhavati na medhāvī na paṇḍitaḥ | priye śubhāni karmāṇi dveṣye pāpāni bhārata ||

A person who is disliked is not seen as good, nor intelligent, nor learned. In the one we love, all actions seem good; in the one we hate, all seem wicked, Bharata.

Meaning today and context

Our likes and dislikes quietly decide how we judge people. Before condemning a colleague or relative, ask whether you would judge the same act the same way if a friend had done it.

Vidura points out how liking and disliking colour our judgement of people.

7.5 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

That is no loss, great king, which brings growth. That should be considered a loss here which, once obtained, destroys much.

This is ethical guidance, not financial advice. For decisions about loans, investments or debt, consult a qualified adviser.

Meaning today and context

Giving something up can be an investment, and some gains cost far more than they bring. Judge a loss or gain by what it leads to, not by how it looks today.

Vidura distinguishes a loss that leads to growth from a gain that destroys much.

7.6 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

samṛddhā guṇataḥ ke cidbhavanti dhanato'pare | dhanavṛddhānguṇairhīnāndhṛtarāṣṭra vivarjayet ||

Some are rich in good qualities, others in wealth. Those who have grown in wealth but lack virtue, Dhritarashtra, one should shun.

Meaning today and context

Money is not a measure of character. Choose friends, partners and mentors for their qualities, not their bank balance, and be wary of wealthy people with no values.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that some are rich in virtue and some only in money, and advises keeping away from the second kind.

7.7 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

sarvaṃ tvamāyatīyuktaṃ bhāṣase prājñasaṃmatam | na cotsahe sutaṃ tyaktuṃ yato dharmastato jayaḥ ||

All you say looks to the future and is approved by the wise. Yet I cannot bring myself to abandon my son. Where dharma is, there is victory.

Correcting a child does not mean abandoning or rejecting them. The verse is about not shielding wrongdoing out of attachment.

Meaning today and context

Knowing what is right and being able to do it are two different things. Many parents see their child's wrongdoing clearly yet cannot correct it, because love has turned into attachment. Admitting this, as Dhritarashtra does, is the first step; the next is acting on it.

Dhritarashtra admits to Vidura that his counsel is wise and far-sighted, yet confesses he cannot bring himself to abandon his son Duryodhana.

7.8 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

svabhāvaguṇasaṃpanno na jātu vinayānvitaḥ | susūkṣmamapi bhūtānāmupamardaṃ prayokṣyate ||

One endowed with a good nature and humility will never inflict even the slightest harm on any creature.

Meaning today and context

Real goodness shows in small things: a good-natured, humble person avoids hurting even in minor ways, with words, habits or carelessness.

Vidura describes the good person: one gifted with good nature and humility never harms any being.

7.9 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

parāpavādaniratāḥ paraduḥkhodayeṣu ca | parasparavirodhe ca yatante satatotthitāḥ ||

Ever busy in slandering others, in causing others pain, and in setting people against each other, they keep striving tirelessly.

Meaning today and context

Watch out for people who constantly gossip, enjoy others' trouble and set people against one another. Their energy goes into division, and it will reach you too.

Vidura now describes the base people one should avoid: those who live on slander and stirring up strife.

7.10 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sadoṣaṃ darśanaṃ yeṣāṃ saṃvāse sumahadbhayam | arthādāne mahāndoṣaḥ pradāne ca mahadbhayam ||

Their very sight is tainted; living with them brings great danger; taking money from them is a great fault, and giving to them a great danger.

This is ethical guidance, not financial advice. For decisions about loans, investments or debt, consult a qualified adviser. Keeping away from harmful people is not a licence to cut someone off without cause, to shame them, or to seek revenge. If you face abuse or danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

With some people, every transaction becomes trouble: borrowing from them puts you in their power, lending to them means losing it. Keep money and close ties apart from those you know to be dishonest.

Vidura continues describing base people: their company is dangerous and money dealings with them go wrong both ways.

7.11 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ye pāpā iti vikhyātāḥ saṃvāse parigarhitāḥ | yuktāścānyairmahādoṣairye narāstānvivarjayet ||

Men who are known as wicked, who are condemned for their company, and who are joined with other grave faults, one should keep away from.

Keeping away from harmful people is not a licence to cut someone off without cause, to shame them, or to seek revenge. If you face abuse or danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

The company we keep shapes us. If someone has a settled record of serious wrongdoing, it is wise to keep a distance rather than hope it won't affect you.

Vidura advises avoiding those known for wrongdoing and condemned for their conduct.

7.12 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nivartamāne sauhārde prītirnīce praṇaśyati | yā caiva phalanirvṛttiḥ sauhṛde caiva yatsukham ||

When friendship turns away, a base man's affection vanishes at once, and with it whatever fruit and happiness the friendship had brought.

Meaning today and context

How someone behaves when a friendship ends shows what it was worth. A shallow friend forgets everything good the moment it is no longer useful.

Vidura describes how a base person behaves when a friendship ends.

7.13 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yatate cāpavādāya yatnamārabhate kṣaye | alpe'pyapakṛte mohānna śāntimupagacchati ||

He strives to slander and sets about causing ruin; for even a small offence, out of delusion, he finds no peace.

Meaning today and context

Some people, once offended, cannot rest until they have damaged your name. Recognise this pattern early, protect yourself calmly, and don't let their grudge become yours.

Vidura continues: after a falling-out, the base person works to defame and ruin, and cannot let go of even a small wrong.

7.14 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tādṛśaiḥ saṃgataṃ nīcairnṛśaṃsairakṛtātmabhiḥ | niśāmya nipuṇaṃ buddhyā vidvāndūrādvivarjayet ||

Association with such base, cruel, undisciplined men the wise person should examine carefully with the intellect and avoid from afar.

Keeping away from harmful people is not a licence to cut someone off without cause, to shame them, or to seek revenge. If you face abuse or danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Judge people carefully, not hastily; but once you have clearly seen cruelty and lack of self-control, it is wiser to keep your distance than to keep getting hurt.

Vidura concludes the description: the wise, after careful thought, should keep far from such cruel and undisciplined people.

7.15 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yo jñātimanugṛhṇāti daridraṃ dīnamāturam | sa putrapaśubhirvṛddhiṃ yaśaścāvyayamaśnute ||

One who helps a kinsman who is poor, wretched or sick gains increase in children and cattle and enjoys imperishable fame.

Meaning today and context

Helping a relative who is struggling, poor or ill is one of the most lasting good deeds. Families that look after their weak members grow stronger together.

Vidura turns to the duty of supporting one's relatives in need, preparing to plead for the Pandavas.

7.16 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

jñātayo vardhanīyāstairya icchantyātmanaḥ śubham | kulavṛddhiṃ ca rājendra tasmātsādhu samācara ||

Those who wish for their own good and the growth of their family should help their kinsmen prosper. Therefore act rightly, king of kings.

Meaning today and context

Your own welfare is tied to that of your family. Helping relatives grow, rather than competing with them, strengthens everyone, including you.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that those who want their own and their family's good must help their kin prosper.

7.17 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

śreyasā yokṣyase rājankurvāṇo jñātisatkriyām | viguṇā hyapi saṃrakṣyā jñātayo bharatarṣabha ||

You will be joined with good fortune, king, by doing honour to your kinsmen. Even kinsmen without merit should be protected, bull of the Bharatas.

Protecting kin does not mean tolerating abuse or enabling harm. If a relative is violent or dangerous, your safety comes first (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Family loyalty does not depend on everyone being admirable. Even relatives with faults deserve basic care and protection, though not support for their wrongdoing.

Vidura says honouring one's kin brings good, and even kinsmen without merit should be protected.

7.18 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kiṃ punarguṇavantaste tvatprasādābhikāṅkṣiṇaḥ | prasādaṃ kuru dīnānāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ viśāṃ pate ||

How much more, then, those virtuous ones who look to you for grace! Show favour, lord of the people, to the distressed Pandavas.

Meaning today and context

If even faulty relatives deserve care, those who are good and have been wronged deserve it all the more. Elders should not ignore family members who are suffering unfairly.

Vidura applies the principle to the Pandavas, who are both kin and virtuous, and asks Dhritarashtra to show them favour.

7.19 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dīyantāṃ grāmakāḥ ke citteṣāṃ vṛttyarthamīśvara | evaṃ loke yaśaḥprāpto bhaviṣyasi narādhipa ||

Let a few villages be given to them for their livelihood, lord. In this way you will win fame in the world, ruler of men.

This is guidance on fairness and settling disputes, not legal or financial advice; for property matters consult a qualified professional.

Meaning today and context

A family dispute can often be settled with something small, offered in time. A fair, modest share given willingly is better than a bitter fight over everything.

Vidura proposes a modest settlement: give the Pandavas a few villages for their livelihood.

7.20 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vṛddhena hi tvayā kāryaṃ putrāṇāṃ tāta rakṣaṇam | mayā cāpi hitaṃ vācyaṃ viddhi māṃ tvaddhitaiṣiṇam ||

Being old, you must protect your sons, dear one; and I too must speak what is good for you. Know me to be your well-wisher.

Meaning today and context

Protecting children sometimes means saying no to them. And a friend who tells you hard truths is often the one who cares most.

Vidura reminds the aged king that protecting his sons is his task, and that Vidura himself speaks only as his well-wisher.

7.21 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

jñātibhirvigrahastāta na kartavyo bhavārthinā | sukhāni saha bhojyāni jñātibhirbharatarṣabha ||

One who seeks prosperity should not quarrel with his kinsmen, dear one; good things are to be enjoyed together with kin, bull of the Bharatas.

Meaning today and context

Family quarrels drain the happiness that success brings. Joy shared with relatives grows; joy guarded against them turns sour.

Vidura advises that one who seeks prosperity should never quarrel with kin, but share joys with them.

7.22 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

saṃbhojanaṃ saṃkathanaṃ saṃprītiśca parasparam | jñātibhiḥ saha kāryāṇi na virodhaḥ kathaṃ cana ||

Eating together, talking together and mutual affection should be practised with one's kinsmen; never hostility in any way.

Meaning today and context

Family bonds are built in ordinary ways: shared meals, real conversation, warmth. These small habits do more to prevent conflict than any grand gesture.

Vidura lists the simple practices that keep a family together.

7.23 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

jñātayastārayantīha jñātayo majjayanti ca | suvṛttāstārayantīha durvṛttā majjayanti ca ||

Kinsmen carry one across here, and kinsmen drown one too. Those of good conduct carry one across; those of bad conduct drag one down.

Meaning today and context

Family can be your greatest support or your heaviest burden. It depends on conduct, theirs and yours. Be the relative who lifts others up.

Vidura says relatives can either save a person or drown him, depending on their conduct.

7.24 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

Vidura says fortune keeps away, as if in fear, from those who go to extremes even in virtues.

This verse reflects the social views of its time about women. It must never be used to demean, control or exclude anyone. A marriage is not measured by having children, and wealth guidance here is not financial advice.

na tatparasya saṃdadhyātpratikūlaṃ yadātmanaḥ | saṃgraheṇaiṣa dharmaḥ syātkāmādanyaḥ pravartate ||

One should not do to another what is disagreeable to oneself. This, in brief, is dharma; any other conduct springs from desire.

Meaning today and context

The simplest test of right action: would I accept this if it were done to me? Much wrongdoing comes from forgetting that others feel as we do.

Vidura gives the essence of dharma: do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself.

Do not distrust anyone because of their religion or lack of it; 'unbeliever' here reflects its time. Keeping away from harmful people is not a licence to cut someone off without cause, to shame them, or to seek revenge. If you face abuse or danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

The line on childless couples reflects its time. Having or not having children never makes a person or a marriage less worthy, and should never be used to shame anyone.
