Chapter 6 (Mahābhārata 5.38)

6.1 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ūrdhvaṃ prāṇā hyutkrāmanti yūnaḥ sthavira āyati | pratyutthānābhivādābhyāṃ punastānpratipadyate ||

When an elder approaches, the life-breaths of a young man rise up as if to leave him; by rising to meet him and greeting him respectfully, he gets them back.

Meaning today and context

Standing up and greeting an elder is not an empty formality; it settles something in us and keeps relationships across generations healthy. Small gestures of respect cost nothing and carry a lot.

Vidura, counselling the sleepless Dhritarashtra, begins a new section on conduct with respect for elders: a young person instinctively stirs when an elder arrives, and is settled again by rising and greeting him.

6.2 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pīṭhaṃ dattvā sādhave'bhyāgatāya ānīyāpaḥ parinirṇijya pādau | sukhaṃ pṛṣṭvā prativedyātmasaṃsthaṃ tato dadyādannamavekṣya dhīraḥ ||

The steady-minded man should offer a seat to a good person who has come to his house, bring water and wash his feet, ask after his welfare and speak of his own state, and then, after due consideration, give him food.

Meaning today and context

Good hospitality has an order: make the guest comfortable, attend to their needs, take a real interest in them, share yourself honestly, and only then feed them. It is about attention, not about the size of the meal.

Vidura describes how a wise householder should receive a good person who comes to the house as a guest.

6.3 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yasyodakaṃ madhuparkaṃ ca gāṃ ca namantravitpratigṛhṇāti gehe | lobhādbhayādarthakārpaṇyato vā tasyānarthaṃ jīvitamāhurāryāḥ ||

The noble say that the life of that man is worthless in whose house a brahmin learned in the Vedic hymns will not accept water, the honey-mixture and a cow, because of the host's greed, fear or meanness.

Meaning today and context

A gift given grudgingly, out of fear or with an eye on the cost, is felt by the one receiving it. Good people quietly decline such hospitality; generosity has to be real to be received.

Vidura continues on hospitality: a household whose offerings a learned guest refuses because of the host's greed, fear or stinginess is a household that has failed.

6.4 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

cikitsakaḥ śalyakartāvakīrṇī stenaḥ krūro madyapo bhrūṇahā ca | senājīvī śrutivikrāyakaśca bhṛśaṃ priyo'pyatithirnodakārhaḥ ||

A physician, a surgeon who extracts arrows, one who has broken a vow of chastity, a thief, a cruel man, a drunkard, one who destroys an embryo, one who lives by soldiering, and one who sells the Veda: such a guest, however dear, does not deserve the water of welcome.

These are ritual rules of their time. Doctors, surgeons and soldiers do honourable and life-saving work; never use this verse to exclude, insult or refuse anyone on account of their profession or past.

Meaning today and context

This is a list of ritual purity rules from its own era, not a judgement on people today. What still holds is the narrower point that cruelty, theft and selling sacred knowledge for gain are not honoured by a good household.

Vidura lists, according to the ritual rules of his time, guests who should not be offered the formal water of welcome even if they are dear.

6.5 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

avikreyaṃ lavaṇaṃ pakvamannaṃ dadhi kṣīraṃ madhu tailaṃ ghṛtaṃ ca | tilā māṃsaṃ mūlaphalāni śākaṃ raktaṃ vāsaḥ sarvagandhā guḍaśca ||

Not to be sold are salt, cooked food, curd, milk, honey, oil and ghee, sesame, meat, roots and fruits, vegetables, dyed red cloth, all perfumes, and jaggery.

Meaning today and context

A rule of livelihood for one class in an ancient society. It is recorded here for completeness and is not guidance on what anyone may trade today.

Vidura lists goods that, under the rules of his time, a brahmin should not sell for a living.

6.6 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

aroṣaṇo yaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcanaḥ prahīṇaśoko gatasaṃdhivigrahaḥ | nindāpraśaṃsoparataḥ priyāpriye carannudāsīnavadeṣa bhikṣukaḥ ||

One who is free of anger, to whom a clod of earth and gold are the same, who has left sorrow behind, who has given up making alliances and wars, who has ceased from blame and praise, and who moves among the pleasant and the unpleasant as one unconcerned: he is the true mendicant.

Describes the renunciate's inner state; not advice to abandon family or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Renunciation is measured by what still disturbs you, not by what you wear. Being free of anger, scheming, and the hunger for praise is a goal anyone can work toward, even with a job and a family.

Vidura describes the true wandering renunciate: not by dress but by inner evenness.

6.7 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nīvāramūleṅgudaśākavṛttiḥ susaṃyatātmāgnikāryeṣvacodyaḥ | vane vasannatithiṣvapramatto dhuraṃdharaḥ puṇyakṛdeṣa tāpasaḥ ||

Living on wild rice, roots, ingudi nuts and greens, well self-controlled, needing no one to urge him to tend the sacred fire, dwelling in the forest yet ever attentive to guests, bearing his burden and doing good: such is the true ascetic.

Describes an ascetic way of life; not dietary advice and not advice to leave home or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Even the forest ascetic is praised not for withdrawal alone but for being self-driven and still caring for whoever comes to his door. Simplicity and responsibility go together.

Vidura describes the true forest ascetic: disciplined, diligent without being told, and still attentive to guests.

6.8 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

apakṛtvā buddhimato dūrastho'smīti nāśvaset | dīrghau buddhimato bāhū yābhyāṃ hiṃsati hiṃsitaḥ ||

Having wronged a wise man, one should not rest easy thinking, 'I am far away.' Long are the arms of the wise; with them, when harmed, he strikes back.

A warning against doing wrong, not a licence to take revenge on those who wronged you. If you are being threatened or harmed, seek help (police 112).

Meaning today and context

Wrongdoing does not stay behind just because we have moved on, changed jobs or cities. The surest safety is not to wrong people in the first place.

Vidura warns that wronging an intelligent person is never safe, however far away one may be.

6.9 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na viśvasedaviśvaste viśvaste nātiviśvaset | viśvāsādbhayamutpannaṃ mūlānyapi nikṛntati ||

Do not trust one who is not trustworthy, and do not trust too much even one who is trustworthy. Danger that arises from trust cuts away even the roots.

About prudence, not suspicion of everyone. It is not a reason to cut off family or friends without cause, and relationships need trust to live.

Meaning today and context

Trust should match what someone has shown, and even good people deserve trust with sensible checks, not a blank cheque. Betrayal from where we least expected it does the deepest damage, so keep some prudence in money, secrets and business.

Vidura gives a famous maxim on trust: measured trust, neither blind nor absent.

6.10 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anīrṣyurguptadāraḥ syātsaṃvibhāgī priyaṃvadaḥ | ślakṣṇo madhuravākstrīṇāṃ na cāsāṃ vaśago bhavet ||

A man should be free of jealousy, protective of his wife, willing to share, pleasant in speech, gentle and sweet-spoken toward women, but he should not come under their control.

Reflects the household norms of its time. 'Guarding' a wife must never mean controlling, confining or monitoring her, and the verse must never be used to demean women. For abuse or control at home, call the women's helpline 181 or police 112.

Meaning today and context

The lasting part is simple: in a marriage, drop jealousy, share what you have, and speak kindly. Today we read 'not under their control' as no one dominating the other; partners decide together.

Vidura advises a householder of his time on conduct toward his wife and women of the household.

6.11 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pūjanīyā mahābhāgāḥ puṇyāśca gṛhadīptayaḥ | striyaḥ śriyo gṛhasyoktāstasmādrakṣyā viśeṣataḥ ||

Women are worthy of honour, greatly blessed, pure, the light of the home. Women are called the Shri, the good fortune, of the house; therefore they should be especially cared for and protected.

'Protect' here must mean care and safety, never restriction or control over women's choices.

Meaning today and context

A home where women are honoured flourishes. Honour today means respect, safety, and an equal voice in the family's decisions, not merely praise.

Vidura praises the women of the household as its honour, light and prosperity.

6.12 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

piturantaḥpuraṃ dadyānmāturdadyānmahānasam | goṣu cātmasamaṃ dadyātsvayameva kṛṣiṃ vrajet | bhṛtyairvaṇijyācāraṃ ca putraiḥ seveta brāhmaṇān ||

Entrust the inner apartments to one like your father, the kitchen to one like your mother, and the cattle to someone as reliable as yourself; go to the fields yourself. Carry on trade through servants, and serve the brahmins through your sons.

Meaning today and context

Delegate each area to the person best suited and most trusted for it, but stay personally involved in the work your livelihood depends on. Good delegation is matching people to tasks, not handing everything away.

Vidura advises on dividing household and estate responsibilities among trusted people while keeping the most vital work in one's own hands.

6.13 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

adbhyo'gnirbrahmataḥ kṣatramaśmano lohamutthitam | teṣāṃ sarvatragaṃ tejaḥ svāsu yoniṣu śāmyati ||

Fire arose from water, the kshatriya from the brahmin, iron from stone. Their power, which reaches everywhere, is quenched in their own sources.

The mention of brahmin and kshatriya reflects the social order of its time; it is not a basis for birth-based hierarchy or caste.

Meaning today and context

However powerful we become, we should be gentle toward those and that from which we came: parents, teachers, the people who raised us up. Using our strength against our own roots ends badly.

Vidura uses images from nature to say that power, however great, grows quiet before its own source.

6.14 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nityaṃ santaḥ kule jātāḥ pāvakopamatejasaḥ | kṣamāvanto nirākārāḥ kāṣṭhe'gniriva śerate ||

Good people born in noble families, with a radiance like fire, always remain forbearing and show no outward sign of it, lying quiet like fire hidden in wood.

Meaning today and context

Real strength does not need to show itself all the time. Capable people stay patient and unassuming, and their power appears only when it is truly needed.

Vidura describes good people of strength who keep their power hidden and patient, like fire within wood.

6.15 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

The king whose counsel is known neither to outsiders nor to those within, and whose eyes are everywhere, enjoys sovereignty for a long time.

Meaning today and context

A leader who keeps plans confidential until the right time, and who stays well informed about what is happening, protects the team and the work. Discretion and awareness go together.

Vidura turns to secret counsel (mantra): the king whose deliberations no one outside or inside can read rules long.

6.16 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kariṣyanna prabhāṣeta kṛtānyeva ca darśayet | dharmakāmārthakāryāṇi tathā mantro na bhidyate ||

One should not announce what one intends to do; show only what has been done. In undertakings of dharma, pleasure and wealth alike, this way counsel is not broken.

Meaning today and context

Talking about plans too early invites interference, envy and loss of focus. Let finished work speak; it is more convincing than announcements.

Vidura continues on keeping counsel: speak of work only once it is done.

6.17 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

giripṛṣṭhamupāruhya prāsādaṃ vā rahogataḥ | araṇye niḥśalāke vā tatra mantro vidhīyate ||

Climbing to a mountain top or the terrace of a palace, or going to a solitary place, or into a forest free of reeds and cover: there counsel should be held.

Meaning today and context

Sensitive conversations need a private setting where no one can listen in. Choose the place for a confidential discussion as carefully as the words.

Vidura names suitable places for secret deliberation, where no one can overhear.

6.18 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nāsuhṛtparamaṃ mantraṃ bhāratārhati veditum | apaṇḍito vāpi suhṛtpaṇḍito vāpyanātmavān | amātye hyarthalipsā ca mantrarakṣaṇameva ca ||

One who is not a friend does not deserve to know your highest counsel, Bharata; nor does a friend who lacks learning, nor a learned one who lacks self-control. For a minister must be one who can both secure your aims and guard your counsel.

Meaning today and context

Confide important matters only in someone who is loyal, competent and self-disciplined, all three. Loyalty without judgement, or brilliance without discretion, can both leak or spoil what matters.

Vidura says who may be trusted with one's most important counsel, and what a minister must be able to do.

6.19 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kṛtāni sarvakāryāṇi yasya vā pārṣadā viduḥ | gūḍhamantrasya nṛpatestasya siddhirasaṃśayam ||

The king of secret counsel, all of whose undertakings his courtiers come to know only once they are accomplished: his success is beyond doubt.

Meaning today and context

Projects that are kept quiet until they are complete face fewer obstacles. A leader can be open about values while being discreet about plans in progress.

Vidura repeats the theme: a ruler whose courtiers learn of his undertakings only after they are done is sure to succeed.

6.20 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

apraśastāni karmāṇi yo mohādanutiṣṭhati | sa teṣāṃ viparibhraṃśe bhraśyate jīvitādapi ||

One who, out of delusion, undertakes blameworthy deeds is ruined, even losing his life, when those deeds go wrong.

Meaning today and context

Shortcuts and wrong means may look clever while they work, but when they fall apart they take everything down with them. Confusion and greed blind us to that risk.

Vidura warns that wrong actions undertaken out of delusion bring ruin when they fail.

6.21 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

karmaṇāṃ tu praśastānāmanuṣṭhānaṃ sukhāvaham | teṣāmevānanuṣṭhānaṃ paścāttāpakaraṃ mahat ||

Doing praiseworthy deeds brings happiness; leaving those same deeds undone brings great remorse afterwards.

Meaning today and context

Regret often comes less from what we did than from the good we did not do: the call not made, the help not given. Acting on the right thing now saves sorrow later.

Vidura sets the other side: doing what is good brings happiness, and neglecting it brings regret.

6.22 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sthānavṛddhikṣayajñasya ṣāḍguṇyaviditātmanaḥ | anavajñātaśīlasya svādhīnā pṛthivī nṛpa ||

For the king who knows when he is holding steady, growing or declining, who has mastered the six measures of policy, and whose conduct is not held in contempt, the earth is under his own control.

Meaning today and context

A leader needs an honest read of whether things are stable, growing or slipping, a range of responses for different situations, and a reputation for decent conduct. Without these, authority is hollow.

Vidura describes the knowledge a king needs for the earth to be in his control: the state of his own position and the six measures of foreign policy.

6.23 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

amoghakrodhaharṣasya svayaṃ kṛtyānvavekṣiṇaḥ | ātmapratyayakośasya vasudheyaṃ vasuṃdharā ||

For the king whose anger and pleasure are never without effect, who personally looks into what has to be done, and whose treasury is known to himself, this earth yields up her wealth.

Meaning today and context

People take a leader seriously when appreciation leads to real reward and displeasure to real consequence. Stay hands-on with what matters, and know your own finances rather than relying blindly on others.

Vidura continues describing the successful king: one whose anger and pleasure carry real weight, who oversees affairs himself, and who knows his own treasury.

6.24 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nāmamātreṇa tuṣyeta chatreṇa ca mahīpatiḥ | bhṛtyebhyo visṛjedarthānnaikaḥ sarvaharo bhavet ||

A king should be content with the mere title and the royal umbrella. He should distribute wealth among those who serve him; he should not alone take everything.

Meaning today and context

A leader who keeps all the rewards loses the people who earned them. Take the role and the responsibility, and share the gains generously with the team.

Vidura advises that a king should be content with the title and symbols of kingship and share wealth with those who serve him.

6.25 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

brāhmaṇo brāhmaṇaṃ veda bhartā veda striyaṃ tathā | amātyaṃ nṛpatirveda rājā rājānameva ca ||

A brahmin knows a brahmin, a husband knows his wife; the ruler knows his minister, and a king knows a king.

Meaning today and context

We judge people best when we share their work or stand close to them. Before forming a view of someone, consider who is actually placed to know them well.

Vidura observes that people are best understood by those who stand in the closest relation to them.

6.26 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na śatruraṅkamāpanno moktavyo vadhyatāṃ gataḥ | ahatāddhi bhayaṃ tasmājjāyate nacirādiva ||

An enemy who has come into one's grasp and deserves death should not be let go; for from one left alive, danger arises before long.

Ancient rules of war are never a licence for violence, revenge or harming anyone. Personal conflicts are settled through dialogue, mediation and the law; if you are in danger, call police 112 (women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

This is the rule of war between kings, not advice for personal life. The narrow lesson that holds is that a serious problem left half-handled tends to return, so deal with real threats fully and through proper means.

Vidura gives the hard rule of ancient statecraft about an enemy who has fallen into one's power.

6.27 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

daivateṣu ca yatnena rājasu brāhmaṇeṣu ca | niyantavyaḥ sadā krodho vṛddhabālātureṣu ca ||

Anger should always be carefully restrained toward the gods, kings, brahmins, the old, children and the sick.

Meaning today and context

Some people should never bear the brunt of our temper: the elderly, children, the ill, and those whose role deserves respect. When frustration rises around them, pause and step away.

Vidura names those toward whom anger must always be held in check.

6.28 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nirarthaṃ kalahaṃ prājño varjayenmūḍhasevitam | kīrtiṃ ca labhate loke na cānarthena yujyate ||

The wise should avoid pointless quarrels, which fools engage in. Doing so, one gains a good name in the world and is not drawn into misfortune.

Meaning today and context

Not every argument needs to be won or even joined. Walking away from fights that achieve nothing protects your peace and your reputation.

Vidura advises the wise to avoid pointless quarrels.

6.29 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

prasādo niṣphalo yasya krodhaścāpi nirarthakaḥ | na taṃ bhartāramicchanti ṣaṇḍhaṃ patimiva striyaḥ ||

One whose favour bears no fruit and whose anger too is meaningless: people do not want him as their master, as women do not want an impotent man as husband.

The simile reflects attitudes of its time; it must never be used to mock or demean anyone for their sexuality, gender or body.

Meaning today and context

If a leader's praise never leads to anything and their displeasure has no consequence, the team stops listening. Appreciation and correction both need follow-through.

Vidura says a master whose favour and anger both mean nothing is not wanted by those who serve him, using a blunt simile of his time.

6.30 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na buddhirdhanalābhāya na jāḍyamasamṛddhaye | lokaparyāyavṛttāntaṃ prājño jānāti netaraḥ ||

Intelligence is not the cause of gaining wealth, nor dullness the cause of poverty. Only the wise person understands the turning course of the world, no one else.

Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

A rich person is not necessarily wise, nor is someone struggling a fool; fortune turns for many reasons. Don't measure yourself or others by bank balance.

Vidura says wealth and poverty are not simple measures of intelligence; the wise understand the turns of the world.

6.31 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vidyāśīlavayovṛddhānbuddhivṛddhāṃśca bhārata | dhanābhijanavṛddhāṃśca nityaṃ mūḍho'vamanyate ||

The fool always disregards those who are senior in learning, character, age and understanding, Bharata, as well as those senior in wealth and family.

Meaning today and context

Dismissing people who know more, have lived longer, or have proven character is a sign of immaturity, not independence. There is something to learn from each kind of seniority.

Vidura describes the fool as one who looks down on those senior to him in any respect.

6.32 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anāryavṛttamaprājñamasūyakamadhārmikam | anarthāḥ kṣipramāyānti vāgduṣṭaṃ krodhanaṃ tathā ||

Misfortunes come swiftly to one of ignoble conduct, the unwise, the envious, the unrighteous, the foul-mouthed, and the wrathful.

Meaning today and context

Envy, harsh speech and anger are not just unpleasant; they steadily create trouble in our work and relationships. Many of our misfortunes are invited by our own habits.

Vidura lists the kinds of people whom misfortune quickly overtakes.

6.33 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

avisaṃvādanaṃ dānaṃ samayasyāvyatikramaḥ | āvartayanti bhūtāni samyakpraṇihitā ca vāk ||

Not breaking one's word, giving, not violating agreements, and well-directed speech: these draw all beings toward one.

Meaning today and context

People are won over by reliability, generosity, keeping agreements and thoughtful words, not by tricks. These four build trust in any team, family or business.

Vidura names what wins people over.

6.34 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

avisaṃvādako dakṣaḥ kṛtajño matimānṛjuḥ | api saṃkṣīṇakośo'pi labhate parivāraṇam ||

One who does not deceive, who is capable, grateful, intelligent and straightforward, finds people to stand by him even when his treasury is exhausted.

Meaning today and context

Character is a reserve that money cannot replace. When you are honest, competent and grateful, people stand by you even in hard times.

Vidura says the honest and capable find supporters even when their resources are gone.

6.35 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dhṛtiḥ śamo damaḥ śaucaṃ kāruṇyaṃ vāganiṣṭhurā | mitrāṇāṃ cānabhidrohaḥ saptaitāḥ samidhaḥ śriyaḥ ||

Steadfastness, calm, self-restraint, purity, compassion, speech that is not harsh, and not betraying friends: these seven are the fuel-sticks of prosperity.

Meaning today and context

Lasting prosperity is fed by character: patience, calm, self-control, integrity, kindness, gentle speech and loyalty to friends. Like fuel for a fire, these keep good fortune burning.

Vidura gives a list of seven qualities that feed prosperity as fuel feeds a sacred fire.

6.36 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

asaṃvibhāgī duṣṭātmā kṛtaghno nirapatrapaḥ | tādṛṅnarādhamo loke varjanīyo narādhipa ||

One who never shares, who is wicked at heart, ungrateful and shameless: such a lowest of men should be avoided in the world, lord of men.

Meaning today and context

Be careful about close ties with someone who takes but never gives, feels no gratitude and no shame. Such patterns tend to repeat, and keeping a healthy distance is wise.

Vidura describes the kind of person who should be kept at a distance.

6.37 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na sa rātrau sukhaṃ śete sasarpa iva veśmani | yaḥ kopayati nirdoṣaṃ sadoṣo'bhyantaraṃ janam ||

He who is himself at fault and yet angers innocent people close to him does not sleep peacefully at night, like one with a snake in the house.

Meaning today and context

Blaming innocent family members or colleagues for our own mistakes poisons the very place we live and work. The unease that follows is a signal to own the fault and repair the hurt.

Vidura warns of the unrest that comes from provoking innocent people close to oneself.

6.38 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yeṣu duṣṭeṣu doṣaḥ syādyogakṣemasya bhārata | sadā prasādanaṃ teṣāṃ devatānāmivācaret ||

Those whose displeasure could harm your welfare and security, Bharata, you should always keep pleased, as one propitiates the gods.

Keeping good relations is not the same as appeasing someone who abuses or threatens you. For abuse, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Tend carefully the relationships your livelihood and security rest on: clients, partners, key colleagues, family. Courtesy and attention to them is prudence, not weakness.

Vidura advises keeping on good terms with those whose displeasure could endanger one's welfare.

6.39 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ye'rthāḥ strīṣu samāsaktāḥ prathamotpatiteṣu ca | ye cānāryasamāsaktāḥ sarve te saṃśayaṃ gatāḥ ||

Wealth entrusted to women, to upstarts newly risen, and to the ignoble: all of it falls into jeopardy.

Reflects the attitudes of its time. It must never be used to demean women, deny them control of money or property, or exclude them from financial decisions. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

What still holds is that money placed with the inexperienced or the dishonest is at risk. The judgement on women reflects an age when women were kept from managing property, not any truth about their ability.

Vidura names, by the standards of his time, those to whom entrusting wealth puts it at risk.

6.40 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yatra strī yatra kitavo yatra bālo'nuśāsti ca | majjanti te'vaśā deśā nadyāmaśmaplavā iva ||

Where a woman, a gambler or a child gives the orders, those lands sink helplessly, like rafts of stone in a river.

Reflects the attitudes of its time and must never be used to demean women or exclude them from leadership.

Meaning today and context

The point that holds is that an organisation run by the reckless or the immature will sink. The inclusion of women reflects its time; history has many able women leaders, and capability, not gender, is what matters.

Vidura warns, in the terms of his age, about states governed by those he considered unfit to rule.

6.41 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

prayojaneṣu ye saktā na viśeṣeṣu bhārata | tānahaṃ paṇḍitānmanye viśeṣā hi prasaṅginaḥ ||

Those who stay devoted to the essential purpose and not to particulars, Bharata, I consider wise; for particulars lead to endless entanglement.

Meaning today and context

Keep the main goal in view and don't get lost in side issues, extras and trivia. In work and in life, fixing on details at the cost of the purpose leads to endless tangles.

Vidura says the wise keep their attention on the essential purpose rather than on side details.

6.42 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

The man whom gamblers praise, whom flattering bards praise, whom loose women praise: that man does not survive.

The wording about women reflects its time; it must not be used to demean anyone. 'Does not survive' means ruin, not a threat to life.

Meaning today and context

Be wary when the people praising you are the ones who gain from your weaknesses: those who profit from your spending, your habits or your vanity. Flattery from such quarters is a warning sign, not a compliment.

Vidura warns against the praise of those who profit from a man's weaknesses.

6.43 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

hitvā tānparameṣvāsānpāṇḍavānamitaujasaḥ | āhitaṃ bhārataiśvaryaṃ tvayā duryodhane mahat ||

Setting aside those great archers of boundless might, the Pandavas, you have placed the great sovereignty of the Bharatas on Duryodhana.

Meaning today and context

Vidura names the real problem plainly: the king has handed power to the wrong person out of attachment. Honest counsel eventually has to speak to the specific situation, not only in general terms.

Vidura turns from general maxims back to Dhritarashtra's own situation: he has passed over the Pandavas and placed power in Duryodhana's hands.

6.44 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

taṃ drakṣyasi paribhraṣṭaṃ tasmāttvaṃ nacirādiva | aiśvaryamadasaṃmūḍhaṃ baliṃ lokatrayādiva ||

You will soon see him fallen from that power, deluded by the intoxication of sovereignty, as Bali fell from the three worlds.

Meaning today and context

Power that goes to one's head does not last; Vidura uses Bali, who lost the three worlds, as the example. Intoxication with position blinds people to their own fall.

Vidura predicts that Duryodhana, blinded by the pride of power, will soon fall, as the demon king Bali fell from rule over the three worlds.
