Chapter 5 (Mahābhārata 5.37)

5.1 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

saptadaśemānrājendra manuḥ svāyaṃbhuvo'bravīt | vaicitravīrya puruṣānākāśaṃ muṣṭibhirghnataḥ ||

O lord of kings, son of Vichitravirya, Manu son of the Self-born named these seventeen kinds of men who strike at the sky with their fists.

Meaning today and context

Some efforts are wasted no matter how hard we push, because they go against the nature of things. Vidura is about to name them so we can stop spending ourselves on them.

Vidura opens a new section of his night-long counsel to Dhritarashtra, citing Manu on seventeen kinds of people whose efforts are as futile as punching the sky.

5.2 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tānevendrasya hi dhanuranāmyaṃ namato'bravīt | atho marīcinaḥ pādānanāmyānnamatastathā ||

He said they try to bend Indra's bow, which cannot be bent, and likewise to bend the rays of the sun, which cannot be bent.

Meaning today and context

A rainbow or a sunbeam cannot be grabbed and bent. Some people and situations are like that too; forcing them only exhausts us.

Vidura continues Manu's image: these seventeen are like people trying to bend the rainbow or the sun's rays.

5.3 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yaścāśiṣyaṃ śāsati yaśca kupyate yaścātivelaṃ bhajate dviṣantam | striyaśca yo'rakṣati bhadramastu te yaścāyācyaṃ yācati yaśca katthate ||

One who tries to instruct someone who will not be taught, one who flies into anger, one who serves an enemy beyond all limit, one who does not protect the women of his household (may good be yours), one who asks for what should not be asked, and one who boasts.

'Protecting women' reflects its time, when women were placed under men's guardianship. Today read it as caring for the safety of one's family; it is never a licence to control or confine any woman.

Meaning today and context

Lecturing someone who doesn't want to learn, losing your temper, fawning on someone who wishes you harm, neglecting the safety of your own family, begging for what you shouldn't, and bragging: all of these spend effort and gain nothing.

Vidura begins listing the seventeen: the first six are those who teach the unteachable, get angry, serve an enemy too much, fail to protect the women of the house, ask what should not be asked, and boast.

5.4 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yaścābhijātaḥ prakarotyakāryaṃ yaścābalo balinā nityavairī | aśraddadhānāya ca yo bravīti yaścākāmyaṃ kāmayate narendra ||

One born in a good family who does what should not be done, a weak man forever at enmity with a strong one, one who speaks to a man who has no faith in him, and one who desires what is not to be desired, O lord of men.

Meaning today and context

Good upbringing wasted on wrong deeds, a long feud you cannot win, explaining yourself to someone determined to disbelieve you, and longing for what can never be yours: these drain a life without return.

Vidura continues the seventeen: the well-born who does wrong, the weak man who keeps feuding with the strong, one who talks to someone with no faith in him, and one who desires what cannot be had.

5.5 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vadhvā hāsaṃ śvaśuro yaśca manyate vadhvā vasannuta yo mānakāmaḥ | parakṣetre nirvapati yaśca bījaṃ striyaṃ ca yaḥ parivadate'tivelam ||

A father-in-law who thinks it fit to jest with his daughter-in-law, one who lives on his daughter-in-law's support and still craves respect, one who sows his seed in another man's field, and one who reviles a woman beyond all limit.

The image of a wife as a 'field' reflects the thinking of its time. The verse condemns abuse and impropriety toward women; it must never be used to demean or control anyone. If someone in the family is being harassed, seek help (women's helpline 181, police 112).

Meaning today and context

In a family, overstepping boundaries with a daughter-in-law, expecting honour while depending on others, betraying a marriage, and constantly running down one's wife or any woman all destroy the dignity they seem to seek.

Vidura continues the seventeen with faults in family life: a father-in-law who jokes with his daughter-in-law, one who lives off her yet wants respect, one who sows seed in another's field, and one who reviles a woman beyond limit.

5.6 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yaścaiva labdhvā na smarāmītyuvāca dattvā ca yaḥ katthati yācyamānaḥ | yaścāsataḥ sāntvamupāsatīha ete'nuyāntyanilaṃ pāśahastāḥ ||

One who, having received, says 'I don't remember', one who, having given, boasts about it when asked, and one who courts the wicked with soft words: these chase the wind with a noose in hand.

Meaning today and context

Forgetting favours received, advertising favours given, and trying to win over people of bad character with flattery are all as futile as trying to lasso the wind.

Vidura ends the list of seventeen: one who denies what he received, one who boasts of what he gave when asked, and one who flatters the wicked. Such people, he says, chase the wind with a noose.

5.7 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yasminyathā vartate yo manuṣyastasmiṃstathā vartitavyaṃ sa dharmaḥ | māyācāro māyayā vartitavyaḥ sādhvācāraḥ sādhunā pratyudeyaḥ ||

As a man behaves toward someone, so should that one behave toward him; that is dharma. One who acts with deceit is to be met with deceit; one of good conduct is to be answered with goodness.

This is about not being exploited, not a licence for revenge, cheating or harming anyone. Guard yourself and keep your own conduct clean; in cases of fraud or danger, go to the police (112).

Meaning today and context

Goodness is not the same as naivety. Return kindness with kindness, but with someone who keeps deceiving you, stop being an open book and protect yourself.

Vidura states a principle of reciprocal conduct: treat people as they treat you, meeting deceit with guardedness and goodness with goodness.

5.8 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

śatāyuruktaḥ puruṣaḥ sarvavedeṣu vai yadā | nāpnotyatha ca tatsarvamāyuḥ keneha hetunā ||

When in all the Vedas man is said to live a hundred years, for what reason does he not attain that full span here?

Meaning today and context

Dhritarashtra asks a question many people ask: why do lives fall short of what they could be? Vidura's answer that follows is about character, not fate.

Dhritarashtra interrupts with a question: the Vedas promise man a life of a hundred years, so why do people not reach it?

5.9 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ativādo'timānaśca tathātyāgo narādhipa | krodhaścātivivitsā ca mitradrohaśca tāni ṣaṭ ||

Excessive and arrogant speech, excessive pride, failure to give, anger, excessive craving for one's own gain, and betrayal of friends: these are the six, O ruler of men.

These are moral teachings about how character wears a life down, not medical claims. For health concerns, see a doctor; illness or early death is never proof that someone had these faults.

Meaning today and context

Harsh talk, arrogance, stinginess, anger, selfishness and betraying friends slowly wear down a life: they cost us relationships, peace and goodwill long before they cost anything else.

Vidura answers Dhritarashtra by naming six faults that cut life short.

5.10 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

These are the sharp swords that cut short the lives of embodied beings. It is these that kill men, not death; may good be yours.

A moral teaching, not a medical one. It must never be used to blame someone who is ill or someone who has died. If you are struggling, Tele-MANAS 14416 is free and confidential.

Meaning today and context

We often blame fate for what our own anger, pride and selfishness have done. Vidura says the real damage is self-inflicted, and so it can also be stopped.

Vidura concludes his answer: the six faults, not death itself, are what kill people.

5.11 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

viśvastasyaiti yo dārānyaścāpi gurutalpagaḥ | vṛṣalīpatirdvijo yaśca pānapaścaiva bhārata ||

One who goes to the wife of a man who trusts him, one who defiles his teacher's bed, a twice-born man who becomes the husband of a shudra woman, and a drunkard, O Bharata,

The line about marrying a shudra woman reflects the caste rules of its time; it must never be used to oppose any marriage or to demean anyone by birth. If drinking is a problem, help is available (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

The heart of this verse is betrayal: of a friend who trusts you, of a teacher, and of yourself through addiction. Those still read as grave wrongs today.

Vidura lists acts the dharma texts rank among the gravest sins, beginning with betrayal of trust and of one's teacher.

5.12 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

śaraṇāgatahā caiva sarve brahmahaṇaiḥ samāḥ | etaiḥ sametya kartavyaṃ prāyaścittamiti śrutiḥ ||

and one who kills a person who sought his refuge: all these are equal to slayers of a brahmin. Scripture says that one who has associated with them must perform expiation.

The ranking of sins by caste reflects its time. The verse is not a reason to shun or exclude any person; it condemns betrayal of the vulnerable.

Meaning today and context

Harming someone who came to you for protection is among the worst betrayals. The verse also warns that keeping close company with such betrayers stains us too.

Vidura completes the list: one who kills a person who came for refuge is as guilty as the others, and all are equal to slayers of a brahmin.

5.13 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

gṛhī vadānyo'napaviddhavākyaḥ śeṣānnabhoktāpyavihiṃsakaśca | nānarthakṛttyaktakaliḥ kṛtajñaḥ satyo mṛduḥ svargamupaiti vidvān ||

The wise householder who is generous, whose words are never slighting, who eats only after others have eaten, who harms no one, does nothing harmful, has given up quarrels, is grateful, truthful and gentle, goes to heaven.

Meaning today and context

A good life at home is made of plain virtues: generosity, respectful speech, feeding others first, avoiding quarrels, gratitude, honesty and gentleness. This is what a heaven on earth for a family looks like.

Vidura describes the householder of good character who reaches heaven.

5.14 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sulabhāḥ puruṣā rājansatataṃ priyavādinaḥ | apriyasya tu pathyasya vaktā śrotā ca durlabhaḥ ||

Men who always speak pleasing words are easy to find, O king; but one who speaks what is unpleasant yet beneficial, and one who listens to it, are hard to find.

Meaning today and context

Anyone can tell us what we want to hear. A friend or colleague who tells us the hard truth for our good is rare, and so is the humility to hear it. Value both.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra, who dislikes hearing unwelcome truths, that flatterers are common but honest advisers and willing listeners are rare.

5.15 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yo hi dharmaṃ vyapāśritya hitvā bhartuḥ priyāpriye | apriyāṇyāha pathyāni tena rājā sahāyavān ||

He who, relying on dharma and setting aside what his master likes or dislikes, speaks unpleasant but beneficial words: through him a king truly has an ally.

Meaning today and context

A leader, parent or boss is only as strong as the people willing to disagree with them for the right reasons. Keep such people close, and be such a person for others.

Vidura continues: the adviser who speaks unwelcome but beneficial truth, grounded in dharma, is a king's true support.

5.16 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tyajetkulārthe puruṣaṃ grāmasyārthe kulaṃ tyajet | grāmaṃ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṃ tyajet ||

For the sake of the family one may give up one man; for the sake of the village, a family; for the sake of the country, a village; and for the sake of the self, the whole earth.

This is about weighing priorities in a grave crisis, not a reason to cut off, disown or sacrifice a family member lightly.

Meaning today and context

When interests clash, the wider good should weigh more than the narrower, and one's own integrity more than any worldly gain. Vidura says this because Dhritarashtra was risking everything to indulge one son.

Vidura states a rule of priorities, implicitly urging Dhritarashtra to give up Duryodhana for the sake of the clan.

5.17 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

āpadarthaṃ dhanaṃ rakṣeddārānrakṣeddhanairapi | ātmānaṃ satataṃ rakṣeddārairapi dhanairapi ||

Guard wealth for times of trouble; guard your wife even at the cost of wealth; and always guard yourself, even at the cost of wife and wealth.

Placing a wife among things to be 'guarded' reflects its time; partners are equals, not possessions. Not financial advice either.

Meaning today and context

Save for hard times, value your spouse above money, and above all keep yourself, body and integrity, intact, because without that you can protect no one.

Vidura gives a related rule on what to protect first.

5.18 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

uktaṃ mayā dyūtakāle'pi rājannaivaṃ yuktaṃ vacanaṃ prātipīya | tadauṣadhaṃ pathyamivāturasya na rocate tava vaicitravīrya ||

I told you even at the time of the dice game, O king, descendant of Pratipa, that this was not right. But like wholesome medicine to a sick man, it does not please you, son of Vichitravirya.

Meaning today and context

Good advice often tastes like medicine. When we keep rejecting the same warning, it is worth asking whether the problem is the advice or our reluctance to hear it.

Vidura reminds Dhritarashtra that he warned him at the dice game, and his advice was rejected then as now.

5.19 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kākairimāṃścitrabarhānmayūrānparājaiṣṭhāḥ pāṇḍavāndhārtarāṣṭraiḥ | hitvā siṃhānkroṣṭukāngūhamānaḥ prāpte kāle śocitā tvaṃ narendra ||

With crows you have defeated these peacocks of bright plumage: with your sons you have defeated the Pandavas. Abandoning lions and sheltering jackals, you will grieve when the time comes, O lord of men.

Meaning today and context

Favouring the people close to us over the people who are actually good and capable may win a round, but it leads to regret. Attachment can make us shelter the wrong people.

Vidura rebukes Dhritarashtra for preferring his scheming sons to the noble Pandavas and predicts he will regret it.

5.20 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yastāta na krudhyati sarvakālaṃ bhṛtyasya bhaktasya hite ratasya | tasminbhṛtyā bhartari viśvasanti na cainamāpatsu parityajanti ||

The master who never grows angry with a devoted servant who is intent on his welfare: in such a master servants place their trust, and they do not abandon him in times of trouble.

Meaning today and context

Leaders who don't take out their temper on loyal team members earn real trust, and that trust is what holds a team together when things go wrong.

Vidura turns to how a master should treat loyal servants and staff.

5.21 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

One should not try to take on new outsiders by cutting off the livelihood of one's servants. For ministers, even loyal ones, abandon a master when they are denied what is due to them and deprived of their comforts.

Meaning today and context

Cutting the pay or benefits of loyal people to fund new hires breeds resentment. Even devoted colleagues leave when they feel their due has been taken away.

Vidura warns against cutting the dues of existing staff to recruit new outsiders.

First reckon all the tasks to be done, and income and expenditure, and fitting wages; then gather suitable helpers, for difficult things are achieved with helpers.

Meaning today and context

Before building a team, be clear about the work, the budget and fair pay; then pick the right people. Big things are never done alone.

Vidura advises planning tasks and finances before gathering helpers.

5.23 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

Meaning today and context

Vidura describes the ideal servant or aide, who deserves to be cared for like oneself.

5.24 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

The servant who disregards instructions, who answers back when given a task, who is proud of his own cleverness and always speaks against: such a one should be dismissed without delay.

Not a licence to dismiss people for honest disagreement; Vidura himself values unwelcome truth (VN.5.14-15).

Meaning today and context

There is a difference between honest disagreement, which Vidura praises, and habitual defiance born of conceit. A team cannot run on someone who resists every instruction out of pride.

Vidura describes the servant who should be let go: disobedient, argumentative and conceited.

A thoughtful man should never, out of trust, go to another's house at an untimely hour; he should not stand hidden at a crossroads at night; and he should not seek a woman whom the king desires.

Meaning today and context

Common sense keeps us out of trouble: don't turn up at odd hours, don't loiter where you'll be suspected, and don't get entangled in rivalries with the powerful.

Vidura gives practical rules of prudence about places and times to avoid.

5.27 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

Meaning today and context

With a powerful person surrounded by bad influences, public confrontation rarely helps. Decline tactfully with a reason rather than announcing distrust, and keep your own counsel.

Vidura advises tact with a powerful man in assembly who keeps bad company: don't confront him openly, and don't voice distrust bluntly.

The labels for women and widows reflect the prejudices of their time and must never be used to demean or exclude anyone. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

The practical core is that lending to people who cannot repay, or to close family where recovery would cause conflict, often ruins both money and relationships.

Vidura lists people with whom one should avoid financial dealings.

In a family or team, different members play different roles. Driving out the strong ones or destroying the shared home harms everyone.

Vidura uses the image of a forest and its tigers to show Dhritarashtra that his sons and the Pandavas need each other.

5.42 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na syādvanamṛte vyāghrānvyāghrā na syurṛte vanam | vanaṃ hi rakṣyate vyāghrairvyāghrānrakṣati kānanam ||

There would be no forest without tigers, and no tigers without the forest. The forest is protected by the tigers, and the woodland protects the tigers.

Meaning today and context

Those who seem to be rivals are often each other's protection. Families, partners and communities survive by guarding one another, not by eliminating one another.

Vidura completes the forest image with a statement of mutual protection.

5.43 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na tathecchantyakalyāṇāḥ pareṣāṃ vedituṃ guṇān | yathaiṣāṃ jñātumicchanti nairguṇyaṃ pāpacetasaḥ ||

The ill-natured do not wish to learn the virtues of others as much as, with their wicked minds, they wish to learn their faults.

Meaning today and context

Fault-finding says more about the one searching than the one searched. Notice whether you hunt for others' flaws, and don't take the gossip of fault-finders to heart.

Vidura observes how ill-natured people look at others.

5.44 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

arthasiddhiṃ parāmicchandharmamevāditaścaret | na hi dharmādapaityarthaḥ svargalokādivāmṛtam ||

One who desires the highest success in wealth should practise dharma from the very start; for wealth never departs from dharma, just as nectar never leaves the world of heaven.

Not a promise that honesty always brings wealth, nor financial advice; it is about the right foundation for prosperity.

Meaning today and context

Wealth built on honesty lasts; wealth built on shortcuts invites ruin. Start with integrity, and prosperity has a foundation to stand on.

Vidura teaches that lasting prosperity is founded on right conduct.

Meaning today and context

Clear understanding grows from clean conduct. When we stop doing wrong and commit to good, we begin to see situations and people as they really are.

Vidura says a mind turned from wrong and set on good understands the world truly.

5.46 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

Meaning today and context

A good life is not all work, all pleasure or all duty. Giving each its right time, ethics, earning and enjoyment, lets all three flourish together.

Vidura teaches balance among the three aims of life: dharma, wealth and pleasure.

Meaning today and context

Self-control in both directions, not exploding in anger and not getting carried away by success, together with a clear head in a crisis, is what keeps good fortune.

Vidura names the person fit for prosperity: one who masters surges of anger and joy and stays clear in crisis.

balaṃ pañcavidhaṃ nityaṃ puruṣāṇāṃ nibodha me | yattu bāhubalaṃ nāma kaniṣṭhaṃ balamucyate ||

Learn from me the five kinds of strength that men always have. What is called strength of arms is said to be the lowest.

Meaning today and context

Physical force is the weakest kind of power. Those who rely on muscle or intimidation have the least to stand on.

Vidura begins teaching the five kinds of strength, starting with the least.

Meaning today and context

Good advisers count for more than money. Who stands beside you and guides you is a greater strength than what is in your account.

Vidura names the second and third strengths: good advisers and wealth.

5.50 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

Lineage here means inherited support, not caste rank; no one's worth is decided by birth.

Meaning today and context

Family background, values and connections are a real advantage, but Vidura ranks them below good advisers and wealth, and far below wisdom.

Meaning today and context

Strength, advisers, money and family mean little without the wisdom to use them. Clear understanding is the power that makes every other power useful.

Vidura names the fifth and highest strength, wisdom, which holds all the others together.

If you are being threatened, seek help from the police (112); this is not advice to retaliate.

Meaning today and context

Distance does not end a conflict with someone powerful. Better not to make such enemies needlessly, and where a rift exists, address it rather than assume it will fade.

Vidura warns against complacency after making a powerful enemy.

strīṣu rājasu sarpeṣu svādhyāye śatruseviṣu | bhoge cāyuṣi viśvāsaṃ kaḥ prājñaḥ kartumarhati ||

In women, in kings, in serpents, in one's own learning, in those who serve one's enemies, in pleasures and in one's lifespan: what wise man would place full trust?

Putting women beside kings and serpents reflects the prejudice of its time; it must never be used to distrust, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

The lasting point is about things that change without warning: power, pleasure, life itself, and even our own knowledge, which fades without practice. Don't take them for granted.

Vidura lists things in which a wise man does not place blind trust.

5.54 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

prajñāśareṇābhihatasya jantościkitsakāḥ santi na cauṣadhāni | na homamantrā na ca maṅgalāni nātharvaṇā nāpyagadāḥ susiddhāḥ ||

For a creature struck by the arrow of wisdom there are no physicians and no medicines, no fire-offerings or mantras, no auspicious rites, no Atharvan spells, and no proven antidotes.

Meaning today and context

Vidura warns that harm done by a wise man's stratagem has no remedy.

5.55 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sarpaścāgniśca siṃhaśca kulaputraśca bhārata | nāvajñeyā manuṣyeṇa sarve te hyatitejasaḥ ||

Meaning today and context

Never belittle someone because they seem quiet or powerless at the moment. Hidden strength, once provoked, can be formidable.

Vidura warns Dhritarashtra not to underestimate the Pandavas, listing things never to be scorned.

5.56 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

agnistejo mahalloke gūḍhastiṣṭhati dāruṣu | na copayuṅkte taddāru yāvanno dīpyate paraiḥ ||

Fire, the great energy in the world, lies hidden in wood; and it does not consume that wood until it is kindled by others.

Meaning today and context

Great power can lie quiet for a long time. Calm on the surface does not mean there is nothing beneath.

Vidura begins an image of fire hidden in wood to describe the patient strength of the Pandavas.

5.57 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sa eva khalu dārubhyo yadā nirmathya dīpyate | tadā tacca vanaṃ cānyannirdahatyāśu tejasā ||

Meaning today and context

Push a patient person too far and the reaction can consume far more than the original quarrel. Provocation has consequences beyond what we intend.

Vidura continues the fire image: once kindled, it burns everything.

5.58 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

evameva kule jātāḥ pāvakopamatejasaḥ | kṣamāvanto nirākārāḥ kāṣṭhe'gniriva śerate ||

In the same way, those born in noble families, with energy like fire, forbearing and showing no outward sign, rest like fire in wood.

Forbearance does not mean staying in abuse; if you are being harmed, seek help (women's helpline 181, police 112).

Meaning today and context

Patience and forgiveness are not weakness. People who bear wrongs quietly often have great strength; don't mistake their restraint for helplessness.

Vidura applies the fire image to the Pandavas: forbearing men of great power who rest quietly like fire in wood.

5.59 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

latādharmā tvaṃ saputraḥ śālāḥ pāṇḍusutā matāḥ | na latā vardhate jātu mahādrumamanāśritā ||

You and your sons are of the nature of a creeper; the sons of Pandu are held to be sal trees. A creeper never grows without the support of a great tree.

Meaning today and context

Sometimes our security depends on the very people we are trying to push away. Recognising whom we lean on is the start of wisdom in a family.

Vidura compares Dhritarashtra and his sons to a creeper and the Pandavas to great sal trees.

5.60 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vanaṃ rājaṃstvaṃ saputro'mbikeya siṃhānvane pāṇḍavāṃstāta viddhi | siṃhairvihīnaṃ hi vanaṃ vinaśyetsiṃhā vinaśyeyurṛte vanena ||

You and your sons are the forest, O king, son of Ambika; know the Pandavas, dear one, to be the lions in that forest. A forest without lions would perish, and lions would perish without the forest.

Meaning today and context

Vidura's closing plea is for interdependence: a family, team or community that drives out its strongest members, or that its strong members abandon, is ruined on both sides.

Vidura closes the chapter by returning to the forest image, now with lions, urging Dhritarashtra to keep both sides together.
