Chapter 4 (Mahābhārata 5.36)

4.1 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

atraivodāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | ātreyasya ca saṃvādaṃ sādhyānāṃ ceti naḥ śrutam ||

On this very point people cite an ancient story, the dialogue of Atreya and the Sadhyas; so we have heard.

Meaning today and context

Vidura teaches through a story. Old stories carry lessons that are easier to remember than bare rules.

Vidura, counselling the sleepless Dhritarashtra, introduces an old story: a conversation between Atreya and the Sadhyas.

4.2 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

carantaṃ haṃsarūpeṇa maharṣiṃ saṃśitavratam | sādhyā devā mahāprājñaṃ paryapṛcchanta vai purā ||

Long ago the Sadhya gods questioned a great seer, wise and firm in his vows, who was wandering about in the form of a swan.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom can come in unexpected forms. The gods themselves go to a wise teacher with their questions.

Vidura sets the scene: long ago the Sadhya gods questioned a great sage of strict vows who was wandering in the form of a swan (Hamsa).

4.3 Sadhyas to Hamsa

sādhyā devā vayamasmo maharṣe dṛṣṭvā bhavantaṃ na śaknumo'numātum | śrutena dhīro buddhimāṃstvaṃ mato naḥ kāvyāṃ vācaṃ vaktumarhasyudārām ||

"We are the Sadhya gods, great seer. Seeing you, we cannot tell who you are. By your learning you seem to us steady and wise. Please speak to us noble words of wisdom."

Meaning today and context

The Sadhyas judge the sage by his understanding, not his appearance. Humility and openness come before learning.

In Vidura's story, the Sadhya gods address the swan-sage: they cannot make out who he is by sight, but his learning shows his wisdom, so they ask him to speak.

4.4 Hamsa to Sadhyas

etatkāryamamarāḥ saṃśrutaṃ me dhṛtiḥ śamaḥ satyadharmānuvṛttiḥ | granthiṃ vinīya hṛdayasya sarvaṃ priyāpriye cātmavaśaṃ nayīta ||

"This, immortals, is what I have heard must be done: steadiness, calm, and following truth and dharma. Untying every knot of the heart, one should bring both the pleasant and the unpleasant under one's own control."

Meaning today and context

Inner knots of resentment and hurt keep us reactive. Loosening them, and not letting what we like or dislike drive us, is the start of a steady life.

The swan (Hamsa) begins his teaching to the Sadhyas, as Vidura narrates: the essential duties are steadiness, calm, and following truth and dharma.

4.5 Hamsa to Sadhyas

ākruśyamāno nākrośenmanyureva titikṣitaḥ | ākroṣṭāraṃ nirdahati sukṛtaṃ cāsya vindati ||

When abused, one should not abuse in return. Anger that is patiently borne burns up the abuser, and the one who bears it receives the abuser's merit.

Not retaliating is not the same as accepting abuse or threats. If you are being harassed, threatened or are unsafe, report it and seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Answering an insult with an insult only doubles the harm. Not hitting back, in a family argument, at work or online, keeps your dignity and leaves the ugliness with the one who started it.

The Hamsa teaches the Sadhyas, as Vidura narrates: when insulted, do not insult back; anger that is borne patiently burns the abuser.

4.6 Hamsa to Sadhyas

nākrośī syānnāvamānī parasya mitradrohī nota nīcopasevī | na cātimānī na ca hīnavṛtto rūkṣāṃ vācaṃ ruśatīṃ varjayīta ||

One should not be abusive, nor treat others with contempt, nor betray friends, nor serve the base; one should not be arrogant nor of low conduct, and should shun harsh, wounding speech.

Meaning today and context

A short checklist for decent behaviour: don't belittle people, don't betray friends, don't fall in with bad company, don't be arrogant, and don't speak to wound.

The Hamsa continues his list of right conduct for the Sadhyas: avoid abuse, contempt, betrayal, arrogance and harsh, wounding speech.

4.7 Hamsa to Sadhyas

marmāṇyasthīni hṛdayaṃ tathāsūnghorā vāco nirdahantīha puṃsām | tasmādvācaṃ ruśatīṃ rūkṣarūpāṃ dharmārāmo nityaśo varjayīta ||

Cruel words burn up a person's vital points, bones, heart and very life. Therefore one who delights in dharma should always shun harsh and wounding speech.

Meaning today and context

Words can hurt as deeply as blows, and their wounds last longer. Before speaking in anger to a child, partner or colleague, remember that what you say may stay with them for years.

The Hamsa explains to the Sadhyas why harsh speech must be avoided: cruel words burn a person to the core.

4.8 Hamsa to Sadhyas

aruṃtudaṃ paruṣaṃ rūkṣavācaṃ vākkaṇṭakairvitudantaṃ manuṣyān | vidyādalakṣmīkatamaṃ janānāṃ mukhe nibaddhāṃ nirṛtiṃ vahantam ||

The one who cuts to the quick, who is harsh and rough of speech, who pierces people with thorns of words, know him to be the most luckless of men, carrying ruin bound up in his own mouth.

Meaning today and context

A sharp tongue may feel powerful, but it drives away friends, family and opportunities. The person who habitually wounds others with words ends up hurting themselves most.

The Hamsa describes the person who habitually wounds others with speech: he carries misfortune in his own mouth.

4.9 Hamsa to Sadhyas

paraścedenamadhividhyeta bāṇairbhṛśaṃ sutīkṣṇairanalārkadīptaiḥ | viricyamāno'pyatiricyamāno vidyātkaviḥ sukṛtaṃ me dadhāti ||

If another pierces him hard with arrows, very sharp and blazing like fire or the sun, the wise one, though wounded and pained beyond measure, should know: "He is handing his merit over to me."

Bearing harsh words inwardly does not mean accepting abuse, bullying or threats. If you are being harassed or are unsafe, report it and seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

The verse admits that harsh words really hurt. But how you read the attack is in your hands: the one throwing insults is losing something, and you need not lose your peace by firing back.

The Hamsa's famous image: even if someone pierces a wise person with word-arrows as sharp as fire and sun, the wise one understands that the attacker is giving away his own merit.

4.10 Hamsa to Sadhyas

yadi santaṃ sevate yadyasantaṃ tapasvinaṃ yadi vā stenameva | vāso yathā raṅgavaśaṃ prayāti tathā sa teṣāṃ vaśamabhyupaiti ||

Whether one keeps company with the good or the wicked, with an ascetic or a thief, just as cloth takes on the colour of the dye, so one comes under their influence.

Meaning today and context

We absorb the habits and values of the people we spend time with. Choosing friends, colleagues and even the voices we follow online shapes who we become.

The Hamsa tells the Sadhyas that a person takes on the character of the company they keep, as cloth takes the colour of the dye.

4.11 Hamsa to Sadhyas

vādaṃ tu yo na pravadenna vādayedyo nāhataḥ pratihanyānna ghātayet | yo hantukāmasya na pāpamicchettasmai devāḥ spṛhayantyāgatāya ||

One who neither starts a quarrel nor provokes one, who, when struck, neither strikes back nor has another strike, who wishes no evil even to one who wants to kill him: the gods long for such a person's coming.

Not hitting back does not mean staying where you are in danger. If someone threatens or harms you, protect yourself and seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Not starting fights, not getting others to fight for you, and not wishing harm even on someone who hurt you is a rare strength. It breaks cycles of revenge in families and workplaces.

The Hamsa praises the person who neither picks quarrels nor strikes back, and wishes no harm even to one who wants to harm him.

4.12 Hamsa to Sadhyas

avyāhṛtaṃ vyāhṛtācchreya āhuḥ satyaṃ vadedvyāhṛtaṃ taddvitīyam | priyaṃ vadedvyāhṛtaṃ tattṛtīyaṃ dharmyaṃ vadedvyāhṛtaṃ taccaturtham ||

Not speaking, they say, is better than speaking. To speak the truth is the second merit of speech; to speak pleasantly is the third; to speak what accords with dharma is the fourth.

Silence here means restraint from needless speech, not keeping quiet about abuse or wrongdoing that should be reported.

Meaning today and context

Before you speak, or post, ask: does this need saying? Is it true? Is it kind? Is it right? Each test makes speech more worth hearing.

The Hamsa ranks speech for the Sadhyas: silence is better than speaking; truthful, pleasant and righteous speech are the next steps up.

4.13 Hamsa to Sadhyas

yādṛśaiḥ saṃvivadate yādṛśāṃścopasevate | yādṛgicchecca bhavituṃ tādṛgbhavati pūruṣaḥ ||

Such as the people one argues with, such as the people one serves, and such as one wishes to become, so does a person become.

Meaning today and context

We are shaped by whom we fight with, whom we work for, and what we aspire to. Choose your battles, your mentors and your goals carefully.

The Hamsa tells the Sadhyas that a person becomes like those he argues with, those he serves, and what he wishes to be.

4.14 Hamsa to Sadhyas

yato yato nivartate tatastato vimucyate | nivartanāddhi sarvato na vetti duḥkhamaṇvapi ||

From whatever one turns away, from that one is set free. By turning away from everything, one knows not even the slightest sorrow.

Turning away here means letting go of inner clinging, not abandoning family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Every craving, grudge or obsession we let go of loosens its hold on us. Freedom often comes not from getting more but from needing less.

The Hamsa teaches the Sadhyas that freedom comes from turning away: whatever one withdraws from no longer binds one.

4.15 Hamsa to Sadhyas

na jīyate nota jigīṣate'nyānna vairakṛccāpratighātakaśca | nindāpraśaṃsāsu samasvabhāvo na śocate hṛṣyati naiva cāyam ||

He is not conquered, nor does he seek to conquer others; he makes no enemies and does not strike back; he is the same in blame and in praise; he neither grieves nor exults.

Meaning today and context

When you don't need to win every contest, criticism and praise lose their grip. That evenness makes you hard to provoke and hard to flatter.

The Hamsa describes the even-minded person: unconquered, not seeking to conquer, without enmity, equal in blame and praise.

4.16 Hamsa to Sadhyas

bhāvamicchati sarvasya nābhāve kurute matim | satyavādī mṛdurdānto yaḥ sa uttamapūruṣaḥ ||

One who wishes for the well-being of all and never sets his mind on anyone's ruin, who is truthful, gentle and self-controlled: he is the best of men.

Meaning today and context

Greatness is measured by goodwill, honesty, gentleness and self-control, not by power or wealth. These are qualities anyone can grow.

The Hamsa defines the best kind of person (uttama purusha): one who wishes everyone well, is truthful, gentle and self-controlled.

4.17 Hamsa to Sadhyas

nānarthakaṃ sāntvayati pratijñāya dadāti ca | rāddhāparāddhe jānāti yaḥ sa madhyamapūruṣaḥ ||

One who does not offer empty consolation, who gives once he has promised, and who knows success from failure and merit from fault: he is a middling man.

Meaning today and context

Keeping promises, not giving hollow reassurance and seeing clearly what went right and wrong is solid, reliable character, even if not the highest.

The Hamsa describes the middling person (madhyama purusha): honest in comfort and promises, and able to tell good conduct from offence.

4.18 Hamsa to Sadhyas

duḥśāsanastūpahantā na śāstā nāvartate manyuvaśātkṛtaghnaḥ | na kasya cinmitramatho durātmā kalāścaitā adhamasyeha puṃsaḥ ||

Hard to govern, one who harms rather than guides, who under the sway of anger never turns back, ungrateful, friend to no one, evil-minded: these are the marks of the lowest of men.

Meaning today and context

Uncontrolled anger, ingratitude and an inability to correct without hurting are warning signs, in others and in ourselves. Noticing them in ourselves is the first step to change.

The Hamsa lists the marks of the lowest kind of person (adhama purusha): one who harms instead of guiding, cannot let go of anger, and is ungrateful and friendless.

4.19 Hamsa to Sadhyas

na śraddadhāti kalyāṇaṃ parebhyo'pyātmaśaṅkitaḥ | nirākaroti mitrāṇi yo vai so'dhamapūruṣaḥ ||

One who cannot believe any good of others, who is suspicious even of himself, and who drives his friends away: he is the lowest of men.

Distrust after real betrayal or abuse is not a character flaw. If anxiety or suspicion is overwhelming, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Constant suspicion poisons relationships and leaves us isolated. If you find yourself doubting everyone's good intentions, it may be worth asking where that distrust comes from.

The Hamsa adds to the marks of the lowest person: suspicion of everyone, including himself, and pushing friends away.

4.20 Hamsa to Sadhyas

One who wants his own good should associate with the best; with the middling when the occasion requires; but never with the lowest.

The 'lowest' here are marked by conduct (cruelty, ingratitude, malice), never by birth, caste or status. It is not a licence to shun people without cause.

Meaning today and context

Seek out people who make you better. Work with ordinary decent people when needed, and keep away from those who are cruel, ungrateful or dishonest.

The Hamsa concludes his three types: associate with the best, with the middling when circumstances require, and never with the lowest.

4.21 Hamsa to Sadhyas

prāpnoti vai vittamasadbalena nityotthānātprajñayā pauruṣeṇa | na tveva samyaglabhate praśaṃsāṃ na vṛttamāpnoti mahākulānām ||

A man may obtain wealth by wicked force, by constant effort, by intelligence and by manly vigour; but he does not thereby rightly win praise, nor attain the conduct of great families.

Meaning today and context

Money can be made in many ways, some of them ugly. Respect and real standing come from how you live, not how much you have.

The Hamsa's last word to the Sadhyas: wealth can be gained by many means, even wrong force, but that does not bring true praise or the conduct of great families.

4.22 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

mahākulānāṃ spṛhayanti devā dharmārthavṛddhāśca bahuśrutāśca | pṛcchāmi tvāṃ vidura praśnametaṃ bhavanti vai kāni mahākulāni ||

Dhritarashtra said: The gods long for great families, as do those grown in dharma and wealth and those of wide learning. I ask you this question, Vidura: which are the great families?

Meaning today and context

Everyone wants to belong to a good family. The real question, which Vidura goes on to answer, is what actually makes a family good.

The story ends and Dhritarashtra speaks: hearing 'great families' mentioned, he asks Vidura which families are truly great.

4.23 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tapo damo brahmavittvaṃ vitānāḥ puṇyā vivāhāḥ satatānnadānam | yeṣvevaite sapta guṇā bhavanti samyagvṛttāstāni mahākulāni ||

Austerity, self-restraint, knowledge of the Veda, sacrifices, pure marriages and the constant giving of food: those families in which these seven qualities are found, and which conduct themselves rightly, are great families.

Here a family's worth comes from its conduct, not its birth or caste. The verse must not be used to rank families or people by birth.

Meaning today and context

A family's greatness lies in what it practises: discipline, learning, sincere commitments in marriage, and feeding others. These can be built by any household.

Vidura answers Dhritarashtra: a great family is marked by seven qualities, all of them practices, together with right conduct.

4.24 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yeṣāṃ na vṛttaṃ vyathate na yonirvṛttaprasādena caranti dharmam | ye kīrtimicchanti kule viśiṣṭāṃ tyaktānṛtāstāni mahākulāni ||

Those whose conduct does not falter and who bring no grief to their origins, who practise dharma with a glad heart in their conduct, who seek distinguished fame for their family and have given up falsehood: those are great families.

Greatness of family here rests on conduct and honesty, not on birth, caste or lineage.

Meaning today and context

A family earns its good name through steady, honest conduct, practised gladly rather than for show. Truthfulness at home is the foundation.

Vidura continues describing great families: steady conduct, joyful practice of dharma, and the rejection of falsehood.

4.25 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anijyayāvivāhaiśca vedasyotsādanena ca | kulānyakulatāṃ yānti dharmasyātikrameṇa ca ||

By neglect of worship, by improper marriages, by abandoning the Veda and by transgressing dharma, families sink into ignobility.

'Improper marriages' reflects the norms of its time. It must not be used to condemn inter-caste or love marriages, or to control anyone's choice of partner.

Meaning today and context

Families decline when they lose their values: when there is no reverence, no learning, no commitment and no sense of right and wrong.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra how families lose their greatness: by neglecting worship, by improper marriages, by abandoning sacred learning and by transgressing dharma.

4.26 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

devadravyavināśena brahmasvaharaṇena ca | kulānyakulatāṃ yānti brāhmaṇātikrameṇa ca ||

By destroying property dedicated to the gods, by seizing what belongs to brahmanas, and by transgressing against brahmanas, families sink into ignobility.

The special status of brahmanas reflects its historical setting. It must never be used to claim privilege by birth or to demean anyone by caste.

Meaning today and context

Misusing what has been given for sacred or common good, or exploiting those devoted to learning and service, is a sign of a family's moral decay.

Vidura continues his list of what ruins families: misusing what belongs to the gods, seizing brahmanas' property, and offending brahmanas.

4.27 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

brāhmaṇānāṃ paribhavātparivādācca bhārata | kulānyakulatāṃ yānti nyāsāpaharaṇena ca ||

By humiliating brahmanas, by slandering them, Bharata, and by misappropriating what was entrusted for safekeeping, families sink into ignobility.

The special status of brahmanas reflects its historical setting; respect for teachers and the learned applies to all, not by caste.

Meaning today and context

Betraying a trust, keeping what someone left in your care, quietly destroys a family's honour. So does mocking those who teach and serve.

Vidura completes the list for Dhritarashtra: humiliating and slandering brahmanas, and stealing what was given in trust, ruin families.

4.28 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kulāni samupetāni gobhiḥ puruṣato'śvataḥ | kulasaṃkhyāṃ na gacchanti yāni hīnāni vṛttataḥ ||

Families well supplied with cattle, with men and with horses are not counted among the noble families if they are lacking in conduct.

Meaning today and context

Wealth, a big house and many connections do not make a family respectable. Without good conduct, all that counts for little.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that families rich in cattle, people and horses are not counted noble if they lack good conduct.

4.29 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vṛttatastvavihīnāni kulānyalpadhanānyapi | kulasaṃkhyāṃ tu gacchanti karṣanti ca mahadyaśaḥ ||

But families not lacking in conduct, even if they have little wealth, are counted among the noble families and win great renown.

Meaning today and context

A modest family that lives with integrity is truly rich. Children raised in such homes inherit something money can't buy.

Vidura completes the contrast: families with little wealth but no lapse in conduct are counted noble and win great fame.

4.30 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

mā naḥ kule vairakṛtkaścidastu rājāmātyo mā parasvāpahārī | mitradrohī naikṛtiko'nṛtī vā pūrvāśī vā pitṛdevātithibhyaḥ ||

"May no one in our family be a maker of enmity, nor a king's minister who seizes others' property, nor a betrayer of friends, a deceiver or a liar, nor one who eats before the ancestors, the gods and guests."

Meaning today and context

A family's hope for itself: no one who stirs up hatred, abuses power for gain, betrays friends or lies, and no one who forgets to put others first at the table.

Vidura voices the prayer of a good family to Dhritarashtra: may no one in our family be a maker of enmity, a thief, a betrayer, a cheat or a liar.

4.31 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yaśca no brāhmaṇaṃ hanyādyaśca no brāhmaṇāndviṣet | na naḥ sa samitiṃ gacchedyaśca no nirvapetkṛṣim ||

"Whoever would kill a brahmana, whoever would hate brahmanas, and whoever would ruin the tilled fields: let him not come into our assembly."

The special status of brahmanas reflects its historical setting; it must not be used to claim privilege by birth. The meaning of 'nirvapet krishim' is uncertain; 'ruin the tilled fields' is one reading.

Meaning today and context

A good family keeps away from violence, hatred of the learned, and destruction of what feeds everyone.

Vidura continues the family's prayer: may no killer or hater of brahmanas, nor one who damages farming, join our gathering.

4.32 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tṛṇāni bhūmirudakaṃ vākcaturthī ca sūnṛtā | satāmetāni geheṣu nocchidyante kadā cana ||

A grass mat, a place on the ground, water, and fourth, kind and true words: these are never wanting in the homes of the good.

Meaning today and context

Hospitality does not need money. Even the poorest home can offer a seat, a glass of water and a kind word, and that is what makes a guest feel welcome.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra about the simple hospitality of good homes: a mat, a place to sit, water and kind words are never lacking.

4.33 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

śraddhayā parayā rājannupanītāni satkṛtim | pravṛttāni mahāprājña dharmiṇāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām ||

Offered with the highest faith and respect, O king, these continue among the righteous who do good deeds, wise one.

Meaning today and context

What matters in hospitality is the respect and sincerity behind it, not the size of the offering.

Vidura adds that these simple gifts of hospitality, offered with deep faith and respect, continue in the homes of the righteous.

4.34 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sūkṣmo'pi bhāraṃ nṛpate syandano vai śakto voḍhuṃ na tathānye mahījāḥ | evaṃ yuktā bhārasahā bhavanti mahākulīnā na tathānye manuṣyāḥ ||

Even a slender syandana tree, O king, can bear a load, which other trees cannot. So too those of noble family, being disciplined, can bear burdens, which other men cannot.

'Noble family' here means people formed by disciplined conduct; it must not be read as ranking people by birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

Strength in hard times comes from inner discipline, not size or show. People raised with steady values can carry heavy responsibilities without breaking.

Vidura compares people of noble character to the slender syandana tree, which can bear heavy loads that other trees cannot.

4.35 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na tanmitraṃ yasya kopādbibheti yadvā mitraṃ śaṅkitenopacaryam | yasminmitre pitarīvāśvasīta tadvai mitraṃ saṃgatānītarāṇi ||

He is no friend whose anger one fears, or who must be served with suspicion. The friend in whom one can trust as in a father, that is a friend; the rest are mere acquaintances.

If you fear someone's anger in a close relationship, that may be a sign of abuse. Seek support (women's helpline 181, police 112 if in danger).

Meaning today and context

If you walk on eggshells around someone, that is not friendship. A real friend, or partner, is someone you feel safe with and can fully trust.

Vidura defines true friendship for Dhritarashtra: a friend is one you can trust like a father, not one whose anger you fear.

4.36 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yadi cedapyasaṃbandho mitrabhāvena vartate | sa eva bandhustanmitraṃ sā gatistatparāyaṇam ||

Even if he is no relation, one who behaves with friendship is a kinsman, a friend, a refuge and a support.

Meaning today and context

Family is not only blood. The people who stand by you, care for you and show up when it matters are your real kin.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that even someone unrelated by blood, if he behaves as a friend, is true kin and refuge.

4.37 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

calacittasya vai puṃso vṛddhānanupasevataḥ | pāriplavamaternityamadhruvo mitrasaṃgrahaḥ ||

For a man of fickle mind, who does not attend upon his elders, whose judgement is ever wavering, the gathering of friends is never stable.

Meaning today and context

Friendships need steadiness. If we keep changing our minds, our loyalties and our plans, and ignore wiser people, friends drift away.

Vidura warns Dhritarashtra that a fickle person who does not respect the counsel of elders cannot keep friends.

4.38 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

calacittamanātmānamindriyāṇāṃ vaśānugam | arthāḥ samativartante haṃsāḥ śuṣkaṃ saro yathā ||

From the man of fickle mind, without self-mastery, who follows wherever his senses lead, wealth departs as swans leave a dried-up lake.

Meaning today and context

Impulsive spending and a lack of self-control drain any amount of money. Financial stability starts with mastering one's impulses.

Vidura gives Dhritarashtra an image: wealth deserts the fickle and self-indulgent as swans leave a dried-up lake.

4.39 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

akasmādeva kupyanti prasīdantyanimittataḥ | śīlametadasādhūnāmabhraṃ pāriplavaṃ yathā ||

They become angry for no reason and are pleased without cause: this is the nature of the wicked, shifting like a drifting cloud.

Sudden mood swings can also be a sign of illness or distress, not wickedness. If you or someone close struggles with this, consider speaking to a professional or Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Moods that swing without reason make a person impossible to rely on. Watch for this in people you depend on, and in yourself.

Vidura describes the unpredictable temper of the wicked to Dhritarashtra: angry without cause, pleased without reason, like drifting clouds.

4.40 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

satkṛtāśca kṛtārthāśca mitrāṇāṃ na bhavanti ye | tānmṛtānapi kravyādāḥ kṛtaghnānnopabhuñjate ||

Those who, having been honoured and having had their aims fulfilled by friends, do not stand by those friends: such ungrateful men, even when dead, the flesh-eaters will not eat.

Meaning today and context

Using people and dropping them once you've got what you wanted is one of the lowest things one can do. Remember those who helped you.

Vidura condemns ingratitude to Dhritarashtra: those who, once honoured and helped, abandon their friends are shunned even by carrion-eaters.

4.41 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

arthayedeva mitrāṇi sati vāsati vā dhane | nānarthayanvijānāti mitrāṇāṃ sāraphalgutām ||

One should call upon one's friends, whether one has wealth or not. Without asking anything of them, one cannot know which friends are solid and which are hollow.

This is about learning who stands by you, not financial advice on borrowing or lending.

Meaning today and context

It's only when we actually lean on people that we learn who will stand by us. Asking for help is not weakness; it also shows who your real friends are.

Vidura advises Dhritarashtra to call on friends whether one has wealth or not, since only then does one learn who is true.

4.42 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

saṃtāpādbhraśyate rūpaṃ saṃtāpādbhraśyate balam | saṃtāpādbhraśyate jñānaṃ saṃtāpādvyādhimṛcchati ||

Through anguish beauty is lost; through anguish strength is lost; through anguish knowledge is lost; through anguish one falls ill.

Not medical advice. If worry or distress feels unmanageable, speak to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Endless worry and inner torment wear down the body and cloud the mind. Recognising this is a reason to seek relief and support, not to blame yourself.

Vidura warns the anxious Dhritarashtra about the harm of constant anguish: it wastes beauty, strength and knowledge, and leads to illness.

4.43 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anavāpyaṃ ca śokena śarīraṃ copatapyate | amitrāśca prahṛṣyanti mā sma śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ||

What cannot be had is not gained by grieving; the body is only tormented, and one's enemies rejoice. Do not set your mind on grief.

Grief is natural and needs time; the verse warns against being consumed by it, not against mourning. If grief turns to despair, reach out to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Dwelling endlessly on what cannot be changed only hurts us more. Grief needs its time, but at some point we gently turn back toward life.

Vidura continues to Dhritarashtra: grief does not bring back what is lost, it torments the body, and pleases one's enemies; so do not give your mind to grief.

4.44 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

punarnaro mriyate jāyate ca punarnaro hīyate vardhate punaḥ | punarnaro yācati yācyate ca punarnaraḥ śocati śocyate punaḥ ||

Again a man dies and is born; again he declines and again he grows. Again he begs and is begged of; again he grieves and is grieved for.

Meaning today and context

Life turns: we give and receive, rise and fall, mourn and are mourned. Seeing this pattern can soften both pride in good times and despair in bad.

Vidura reminds Dhritarashtra of the turning wheel of life: people die and are born, decline and rise, ask and are asked, grieve and are grieved for.

4.45 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sukhaṃ ca duḥkhaṃ ca bhavābhavau ca lābhālābhau maraṇaṃ jīvitaṃ ca | paryāyaśaḥ sarvamiha spṛśanti tasmāddhīro naiva hṛṣyenna śocet ||

Happiness and sorrow, prosperity and adversity, gain and loss, death and life: all these touch everyone here in turn. Therefore the steady one should neither exult nor grieve.

Not a call to suppress grief. After a loss, mourning is natural and needed; steadiness grows slowly.

Meaning today and context

Nobody gets only good times or only bad ones. Knowing that everything comes in turn helps us stay steady through success and setbacks alike.

Vidura draws the conclusion for Dhritarashtra: joy and sorrow, gain and loss, life and death come to everyone in turn, so the steady person neither exults nor grieves.

4.46 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

calāni hīmāni ṣaḍindriyāṇi teṣāṃ yadyadvartate yatra yatra | tatastataḥ sravate buddhirasya chidrodakumbhādiva nityamambhaḥ ||

These six senses are restless. Wherever any one of them goes, there the person's understanding leaks away, as water constantly leaks from a cracked pot.

Meaning today and context

Every unchecked distraction, scrolling, craving or impulse, leaks away a bit of our focus and judgement. Plugging the leaks keeps the mind full.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that the restless senses drain the mind's understanding, like water leaking from a cracked pot.

4.47 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

tanurucchaḥ śikhī rājā mithyopacarito mayā | mandānāṃ mama putrāṇāṃ yuddhenāntaṃ kariṣyati ||

Dhritarashtra said: King Yudhishthira is like a slender, rising flame, and I have treated him falsely. He will make an end of my foolish sons in war.

Meaning today and context

Dhritarashtra knows he has wronged the Pandavas, and his fear grows from that guilt. Knowing one's wrong is the first step, but it is not enough without setting it right.

Dhritarashtra speaks his fear to Vidura: Yudhishthira, like a slender, rising flame whom he has treated falsely, will destroy his foolish sons in war.

4.48 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

nityodvignamidaṃ sarvaṃ nityodvignamidaṃ manaḥ | yattatpadamanudvignaṃ tanme vada mahāmate ||

All this is ever full of anxiety; this mind is ever anxious. Tell me, wise one, of that state which is free from anxiety.

If anxiety is constant or affects sleep and daily life, speak to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Dhritarashtra's question is our own: is there any peace from this constant worry? Asking honestly is where the search begins.

Dhritarashtra, sleepless with worry, asks Vidura: everything is always anxious, the mind is always anxious; tell me of the state free from anxiety.

4.49 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nānyatra vidyātapasornānyatrendriyanigrahāt | nānyatra lobhasaṃtyāgācchāntiṃ paśyāmi te'nagha ||

Apart from learning and austerity, apart from restraint of the senses, apart from giving up greed, I see no peace for you, sinless one.

Meaning today and context

Vidura is honest with the king: peace will not come from more power or possessions but from understanding, discipline and letting go of greed. That holds for us too.

Vidura answers Dhritarashtra's plea for peace of mind: it comes only from learning, austerity, sense control and giving up greed.

4.50 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

buddhyā bhayaṃ praṇudati tapasā vindate mahat | guruśuśrūṣayā jñānaṃ śāntiṃ tyāgena vindati ||

By understanding one drives away fear; by austerity one attains greatness; by serving the teacher one gains knowledge; by letting go one finds peace.

Meaning today and context

Fear shrinks when we understand a situation clearly; knowledge grows when we learn humbly from those who know; peace comes when we stop clutching.

Vidura explains to Dhritarashtra what each practice gives: understanding drives off fear, austerity brings greatness, serving the teacher brings knowledge, renunciation brings peace.

4.51 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anāśritā dānapuṇyaṃ vedapuṇyamanāśritāḥ | rāgadveṣavinirmuktā vicarantīha mokṣiṇaḥ ||

Not relying on the merit of giving, not relying on the merit of Vedic learning, freed from attraction and aversion, the seekers of liberation move about in this world.

Meaning today and context

Good deeds done to build up credit still bind us. Real freedom comes from dropping likes and dislikes, not from collecting merit.

Vidura describes to Dhritarashtra those who seek liberation: they do not lean on the merit of gifts or of sacred learning, and are free from attraction and aversion.

4.52 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

svadhītasya suyuddhasya sukṛtasya ca karmaṇaḥ | tapasaśca sutaptasya tasyānte sukhamedhate ||

Of study well done, of a battle well fought, of a deed well performed, and of austerity well practised, at the end happiness grows.

'Battle well fought' is a figure from the warrior's world; it is not an endorsement of violence.

Meaning today and context

The deepest satisfaction comes after doing something properly, whether exam preparation, honest work or a hard commitment. Shortcuts don't give the same joy.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that happiness grows at the end of anything done well: study, a fair fight, a good deed, a well-kept discipline.

4.53 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

svāstīrṇāni śayanāni prapannā na vai bhinnā jātu nidrāṃ labhante | na strīṣu rājanratimāpnuvanti na māgadhaiḥ stūyamānā na sūtaiḥ ||

Those who are divided, O king, never find sleep though they lie on well-spread beds; they find no delight in women, nor in being praised by bards and minstrels.

Meaning today and context

Families and teams torn by conflict lose their peace; no comfort, pleasure or praise can make up for it. Dhritarashtra himself cannot sleep for this reason.

Vidura begins warning Dhritarashtra about division within a family: those who are split by discord never sleep in peace.

4.54 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na vai bhinnā jātu caranti dharmaṃ na vai sukhaṃ prāpnuvantīha bhinnāḥ | na vai bhinnā gauravaṃ mānayanti na vai bhinnāḥ praśamaṃ rocayanti ||

The divided never practise dharma; the divided never find happiness here; the divided never honour those worthy of respect; the divided never take pleasure in peace.

Meaning today and context

Once a family or group splits into camps, people stop doing what is right, stop respecting their elders and lose all taste for making peace. Healing divisions early matters.

Vidura continues to Dhritarashtra on the cost of discord: the divided do not practise dharma, find happiness, honour elders or welcome peace.

4.55 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na vai teṣāṃ svadate pathyamuktaṃ yogakṣemaṃ kalpate nota teṣām | bhinnānāṃ vai manujendra parāyaṇaṃ na vidyate kiṃ cidanyadvināśāt ||

Wholesome advice does not please them; their welfare and security never take shape. For the divided, O lord of men, there is no end other than destruction.

Meaning today and context

When people are locked in conflict, they can't hear good advice and can't build anything together. Left unchecked, division ends in ruin for everyone.

Vidura completes his warning to Dhritarashtra: good advice tastes bitter to the divided, their welfare is never secure, and their end is ruin.

4.56 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

saṃbhāvyaṃ goṣu saṃpannaṃ saṃbhāvyaṃ brāhmaṇe tapaḥ | saṃbhāvyaṃ strīṣu cāpalyaṃ saṃbhāvyaṃ jñātito bhayam ||

Wealth is to be expected from cattle; austerity is to be expected in a brahmana; fickleness is to be expected in women; danger is to be expected from kinsmen.

The line on women reflects the attitudes of its time. It must never be used to demean, distrust or control women.

Meaning today and context

Vidura's real point for the king is the last line: the greatest danger often comes from within one's own family, so quarrels with kin should be settled, not fed.

Vidura lists to Dhritarashtra things that are to be expected in their nature, ending with danger from one's own kin.

4.57 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tantavo'pyāyatā nityaṃ tantavo bahulāḥ samāḥ | bahūnbahutvādāyāsānsahantītyupamā satām ||

Threads, when long, many and even, bear many strains because they are many: this is the image of the good.

Meaning today and context

One thread snaps easily; many woven together hold. Families and teams that stand together can bear pressures none could bear alone.

Vidura gives Dhritarashtra an image of unity: many threads, long and even, bear great strain because they are many.

4.58 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dhūmāyante vyapetāni jvalanti sahitāni ca | dhṛtarāṣṭrolmukānīva jñātayo bharatarṣabha ||

Kinsmen, Dhritarashtra, bull among the Bharatas, are like firebrands: separated they merely smoke; together they blaze.

Meaning today and context

Apart, family members only smoulder with resentment; together they can light up each other's lives. Coming together brings out everyone's strength.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that kinsmen are like burning sticks: apart they only smoke, together they blaze.

4.59 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

brāhmaṇeṣu ca ye śūrāḥ strīṣu jñātiṣu goṣu ca | vṛntādiva phalaṃ pakvaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭra patanti te ||

Those who show their might against brahmanas, women, kinsmen and cows, Dhritarashtra, drop like ripe fruit from the stalk.

If you or someone you know faces violence at home, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181. The special mention of brahmanas reflects its time; protection from harm is owed to everyone.

Meaning today and context

Using strength against those who are defenceless or close to you, wife, family, the gentle, animals, is not courage but cowardice, and it brings one's own downfall.

Vidura warns Dhritarashtra that those who show their 'valour' against brahmanas, women, kinsmen and cows fall like ripe fruit from the stalk.

4.60 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

mahānapyekajo vṛkṣo balavānsupratiṣṭhitaḥ | prasahya eva vātena śākhāskandhaṃ vimarditum ||

A tree standing alone, though great, strong and well-rooted, can be overpowered by the wind, its branches and trunk crushed.

Meaning today and context

However strong you are, standing completely alone leaves you exposed when the storm comes.

Vidura begins a comparison for Dhritarashtra: a great lone tree, however strong and well-rooted, can be crushed by the wind.

4.61 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

atha ye sahitā vṛkṣāḥ saṃghaśaḥ supratiṣṭhitāḥ | te hi śīghratamānvātānsahante'nyonyasaṃśrayāt ||

But trees that stand together in a cluster, well rooted, withstand the most violent winds through their mutual support.

Meaning today and context

A family, friendship or community that holds together can weather crises that would topple anyone alone.

Vidura completes the image for Dhritarashtra: trees that stand together in a grove withstand the fiercest winds by supporting each other.

4.62 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

evaṃ manuṣyamapyekaṃ guṇairapi samanvitam | śakyaṃ dviṣanto manyante vāyurdrumamivaikajam ||

So too, a man who stands alone, though endowed with good qualities, is thought by his enemies to be within their power, as the wind thinks of a lone tree.

Meaning today and context

Talent alone doesn't protect you. People who isolate themselves, or are isolated by family quarrels, become easy targets. Relationships are a kind of strength.

Vidura applies the tree image to people for Dhritarashtra: enemies think a lone person, however gifted, is easy to overcome.

4.63 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anyonyasamupaṣṭambhādanyonyāpāśrayeṇa ca | jñātayaḥ saṃpravardhante sarasīvotpalānyuta ||

By holding one another up and relying on one another, kinsmen flourish together, like lotuses in a lake.

Meaning today and context

Families thrive when members lift each other up instead of competing. Support given freely comes back to everyone.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that kinsmen prosper by supporting and relying on one another, like lotuses in a lake.

4.64 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

avadhyā brāhmaṇā gāvaḥ striyo bālāśca jñātayaḥ | yeṣāṃ cānnāni bhuñjīta ye ca syuḥ śaraṇāgatāḥ ||

Not to be slain are brahmanas, cows, women, children and kinsmen, those whose food one has eaten, and those who have come for refuge.

This list reflects its time; it does not imply that anyone outside it may be harmed. No one may be harmed, and the verse is never a justification for violence.

Meaning today and context

Vidura reminds the king of lines that must never be crossed, above all against kin and those who are defenceless or have trusted you. Harming them is the deepest betrayal.

Vidura lists for Dhritarashtra those who must never be killed: brahmanas, cows, women, children, kinsmen, those whose food one has eaten, and those who come for refuge.

4.65 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

There is no other good in a person, even among the wealthy, like freedom from illness; may it be well with you. The sick are as good as dead.

Not medical advice. 'The sick are as good as dead' is a rhetorical contrast; it must never be used to devalue people who are ill or disabled.

Meaning today and context

Health is the wealth that makes every other kind of wealth worth having. Caring for it is not vanity but wisdom.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that, even for the wealthy, there is no blessing like freedom from illness.

4.66 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

avyādhijaṃ kaṭukaṃ śīrṣarogaṃ pāpānubandhaṃ paruṣaṃ tīkṣṇamugram | satāṃ peyaṃ yanna pibantyasanto manyuṃ mahārāja piba praśāmya ||

Anger is bitter, a headache that comes without disease, bound up with sin, harsh, sharp and fierce. The good drink it down; the wicked do not. Drink down your anger, great king, and be at peace.

Swallowing anger means not acting on it destructively, not bottling up hurt or staying silent about abuse. Talk it through, and if you are unsafe seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Anger hurts the one who holds it, like a headache with no cause. Swallowing it, not lashing out, takes more strength than exploding, and is what lets peace return.

Vidura urges Dhritarashtra to swallow his anger: it is bitter like a headache without illness, leads to wrongdoing, and only the good can drink it down.

4.67 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

rogārditā na phalānyādriyante na vai labhante viṣayeṣu tattvam | duḥkhopetā rogiṇo nityameva na budhyante dhanabhogānna saukhyam ||

Those afflicted by illness care nothing for fruits and find no essence in pleasures. The sick are always full of suffering; they know neither the enjoyment of wealth nor happiness.

Not medical advice, and not a judgement on people living with illness, who can and do find meaning and joy.

Meaning today and context

When health fails, money and pleasures lose their taste. Don't trade your health for wealth you won't be able to enjoy.

Vidura continues on illness for Dhritarashtra: the sick cannot enjoy fruits, pleasures, wealth or comfort.

purā hyukto nākarostvaṃ vaco me dyūte jitāṃ draupadīṃ prekṣya rājan | duryodhanaṃ vārayetyakṣavatyāṃ kitavatvaṃ paṇḍitā varjayanti ||

Earlier, O king, you did not heed my words when I spoke to you at the dice game, seeing Draupadi won: "Restrain Duryodhana." The wise avoid gambling.

Not financial advice. If gambling or betting (including online) has become hard to stop, seek help; Tele-MANAS 14416 can guide you.

Meaning today and context

Ignoring good advice at the critical moment leads to lasting damage. And gambling, then and now, ruins families.

Vidura reminds Dhritarashtra that at the dice game, when Draupadi was won, he urged him to restrain Duryodhana, and the king did not listen.

na tadbalaṃ yanmṛdunā virudhyate miśro dharmastarasā sevitavyaḥ | pradhvaṃsinī krūrasamāhitā śrīrmṛduprauḍhā gacchati putrapautrān ||

That is not strength which is at odds with gentleness. Subtle dharma should be followed with resolve. Prosperity built on cruelty perishes; prosperity grown through gentleness passes on to sons and grandsons.

Meaning today and context

Wealth or success built by crushing others doesn't last. What is built with fairness and kindness endures and benefits the next generation too.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that real strength does not oppose gentleness, and that prosperity built on cruelty is destroyed while prosperity grown gently lasts for generations.

dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ pāṇḍavānpālayantu pāṇḍoḥ sutāstava putrāṃśca pāntu | ekārimitrāḥ kuravo hyekamantrā jīvantu rājansukhinaḥ samṛddhāḥ ||

Let the sons of Dhritarashtra protect the Pandavas, and the sons of Pandu protect your sons. With common enemies and common friends, of one counsel, let the Kurus live happy and prosperous, O king.

Meaning today and context

Vidura's vision for a divided family: cousins guarding each other instead of fighting. It is still the best hope for families split over inheritance or old wrongs.

Vidura applies his teaching to the Kuru family: let Dhritarashtra's sons and the Pandavas protect each other and live united and prosperous.

meḍhībhūtaḥ kauravāṇāṃ tvamadya tvayyādhīnaṃ kurukulamājamīḍha | pārthānbālānvanavāsaprataptāngopāyasva svaṃ yaśastāta rakṣan ||

Today you are the central pillar of the Kauravas; the Kuru clan depends on you, descendant of Ajamidha. Protect the sons of Pritha, still young and scorched by their exile in the forest, and so guard your own good name, dear brother.

Meaning today and context

The head of a family carries a special duty to protect those who have been wronged, including those outside their own immediate circle. Fairness is also how an elder keeps the family's respect.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that he is the central pillar of the Kurus and urges him to protect the young Pandavas, worn down by forest exile, for the sake of his own good name.

4.72 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

saṃdhatsva tvaṃ kauravānpāṇḍuputrairmā te'ntaraṃ ripavaḥ prārthayantu | satye sthitāste naradeva sarve duryodhanaṃ sthāpaya tvaṃ narendra ||

Make peace between the Kauravas and the sons of Pandu; let no enemies look for an opening in you. They all stand firm in truth, lord of men. Restrain Duryodhana, O king.

Meaning today and context

Making peace within the family closes the door to outsiders who profit from division. Sometimes that means a parent must firmly restrain their own child.

Vidura closes the chapter by urging Dhritarashtra to make peace between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, who stand in truth, and to restrain Duryodhana.
