Chapter 3 (Mahābhārata 5.35)

3.1 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

brūhi bhūyo mahābuddhe dharmārthasahitaṃ vacaḥ | śṛṇvato nāsti me tṛptirvicitrāṇīha bhāṣase ||

Dhritarashtra said: Speak again, wise one, words joined with dharma and with worldly good. I am not satisfied with listening; the things you say here are wonderful.

Meaning today and context

A troubled mind can be hungry for good advice and still not act on it. Dhritarashtra loves listening to Vidura; the question the whole text keeps asking is whether he will change.

Still sleepless, King Dhritarashtra asks Vidura to keep speaking: he cannot hear enough of his counsel.

3.2 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sarvatīrtheṣu vā snānaṃ sarvabhūteṣu cārjavam | ubhe ete same syātāmārjavaṃ vā viśiṣyate ||

Vidura said: Bathing at every holy place, and straightforwardness towards all beings: these two may be equal, or straightforwardness is the greater.

Meaning today and context

Being honest and without guile with everyone around you is itself a pilgrimage. Religious acts do not replace simple, straight dealing with people, and may count for less than it.

Vidura answers by praising straightforwardness (ārjava): honest, uncrooked dealing with every being is worth as much as every pilgrimage, or more.

3.3 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ārjavaṃ pratipadyasva putreṣu satataṃ vibho | iha kīrtiṃ parāṃ prāpya pretya svargamavāpsyasi ||

Always practise straightforwardness towards your sons, my lord. Winning the highest fame here, you will reach heaven after death.

Meaning today and context

Parents and family heads earn lasting respect by dealing honestly and evenly with all the children in their care, not by favouring some and scheming for them.

Vidura applies the point to the king: be straight and fair with your sons, meaning both his own sons and the Pandavas, his brother's sons.

3.4 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yāvatkīrtirmanuṣyasya puṇyā lokeṣu gīyate | tāvatsa puruṣavyāghra svargaloke mahīyate ||

For as long as a man's pure fame is sung in the worlds, so long, tiger among men, is he honoured in heaven.

Meaning today and context

What people remember of us after we are gone is how we treated others. A good name built on fairness lasts longer than anything we hoard.

Vidura adds why fame matters: a good name outlives a person and honours them after death.

3.5 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | virocanasya saṃvādaṃ keśinyarthe sudhanvanā ||

On this they cite this ancient story, the dialogue of Virochana with Sudhanva for the sake of Keshini.

Meaning today and context

Indian teaching often makes its point through a story. This one is about pride, a wager of lives, and a father who must judge his own son.

Vidura introduces an old story to make his point about truth: the dispute between Virochana, son of the asura king Prahlada, and Sudhanva, son of the sage Angiras, over the maiden Keshini.

3.6 Keshini

kiṃ brāhmaṇāḥ svicchreyāṃso ditijāḥ svidvirocana | atha kena sma paryaṅkaṃ sudhanvā nādhirohati ||

Keshini said: Are the brahmins better, Virochana, or the sons of Diti? Otherwise why does Sudhanva not sit upon the couch?

Meaning today and context

Keshini does not simply accept a suitor's claims; she asks questions before she chooses. Asking who is truly worthy is the start of the story.

In Vidura's story, Keshini, a maiden choosing her husband, has come to the asura prince Virochana, who seeks her. She asks him a pointed question.

3.7 Virochana

prājāpatyā hi vai śreṣṭhā vayaṃ keśini sattamāḥ | asmākaṃ khalvime lokāḥ ke devāḥ ke dvijātayaḥ ||

Virochana said: We, the offspring of Prajapati, are the best and the most excellent, Keshini. These worlds are surely ours. Who are the gods, and who the brahmins?

Meaning today and context

Pride in birth and possessions speaks loudly and proves nothing. Virochana's boast sets up the fall that follows.

Virochana boasts to Keshini that his race, descended from Prajapati, is the best and owns the worlds.

3.8 Keshini

ihaivāssva pratīkṣāva upasthāne virocana | sudhanvā prātarāgantā paśyeyaṃ vāṃ samāgatau ||

Keshini said: Let us wait right here in this meeting hall, Virochana. Sudhanva will come in the morning; I will see you two together.

Meaning today and context

Keshini takes her time and judges by what she sees, not by what she is told. The choice of a partner is hers to make.

Keshini decides to see the two rivals together before making up her mind.

3.9 Virochana

tathā bhadre kariṣyāmi yathā tvaṃ bhīru bhāṣase | sudhanvānaṃ ca māṃ caiva prātardraṣṭāsi saṃgatau ||

Virochana said: I will do as you say, gentle lady, timid one. In the morning you will see Sudhanva and me together.

Meaning today and context

The confident prince agrees to be compared, sure that he will win. The story is setting the stage for a test.

Virochana agrees to Keshini's plan.

3.10 Sudhanva

anvālabhe hiraṇmayaṃ prāhrāde'haṃ tavāsanam | ekatvamupasaṃpanno na tvāseyaṃ tvayā saha ||

Sudhanva said: Son of Prahlada, I only touch your golden seat. I will not sit with you as your equal.

Meaning today and context

Both young men are now competing over rank and seating. The quarrel starts, as many do, with a small question of who sits where.

Next morning Sudhanva arrives. Virochana offers him a place on his golden seat; Sudhanva touches it out of courtesy but refuses to sit beside him as an equal.

3.11 Virochana

anvāharantu phalakaṃ kūrcaṃ vāpyatha vā bṛsīm | sudhanvanna tvamarho'si mayā saha samāsanam ||

Virochana said: Let them bring a wooden plank, or a bundle of grass, or a mat. Sudhanva, you are not fit to share a seat with me.

Meaning today and context

Pride answers pride with insult. The dispute now becomes personal.

Virochana, stung, tells his servants to bring a lesser seat for Sudhanva.

3.12 Sudhanva

Sudhanva said: Even your father would sit below me and wait upon me when I was seated. You are a boy brought up in comfort at home; you understand nothing.

Meaning today and context

Sudhanva appeals to the one person whose word both must respect: Virochana's father. That appeal decides where the story goes.

Sudhanva retorts that Virochana's own father, Prahlada, honours him and would sit below him.

3.13 Virochana

hiraṇyaṃ ca gavāśvaṃ ca yadvittamasureṣu naḥ | sudhanvanvipaṇe tena praśnaṃ pṛcchāva ye viduḥ ||

Virochana said: Gold, cows, horses, whatever wealth we asuras have: with that as the stake, Sudhanva, let us put the question to those who know.

Meaning today and context

Wounded pride is ready to stake everything to be proved right.

Virochana proposes a wager of all the asuras' wealth and asks that they put the question of superiority to those who know.

3.14 Sudhanva

hiraṇyaṃ ca gavāśvaṃ ca tavaivāstu virocana | prāṇayostu paṇaṃ kṛtvā praśnaṃ pṛcchāva ye viduḥ ||

Sudhanva said: Let the gold, cows and horses stay yours, Virochana. Let us make our lives the stake, and put the question to those who know.

Meaning today and context

The quarrel now carries the highest stakes, which makes an honest judge all the more important.

Sudhanva refuses the wealth and raises the stakes: they will wager their lives.

3.15 Virochana

āvāṃ kutra gamiṣyāvaḥ prāṇayorvipaṇe kṛte | na hi deveṣvahaṃ sthātā na manuṣyeṣu karhi cit ||

Virochana said: Once our lives are staked, where shall we go? I will never stand before the gods, nor ever among men.

Meaning today and context

Each side wants a judge it can trust. The question becomes: who is honest enough to judge fairly?

Virochana asks who will judge; he will not go before the gods or men, whom he expects to be biased.

3.16 Sudhanva

Sudhanva said: With our lives staked, we will go to your father. For even for his son's sake, Prahlada would not speak a lie.

Meaning today and context

The highest compliment is when even your opponent trusts you to judge your own family's case. That kind of trust is built over a lifetime of not bending the truth.

Sudhanva, the rival, proposes Virochana's own father Prahlada as judge, trusting that Prahlada will not lie even to save his son.

3.17 Prahlada

imau tau saṃpradṛśyete yābhyāṃ na caritaṃ saha | āśīviṣāviva kruddhāvekamārgamihāgatau ||

Prahlada said: Here are these two, who have never gone about together, arriving by one road like two angry venomous snakes.

Meaning today and context

A wise elder reads trouble on people's faces before a word is spoken.

Prahlada, king of the asuras, sees his son and Sudhanva arriving together and remarks on it.

3.18 Prahlada

Why do you now go about together, you who never went together before? Virochana, I ask you this: are you friends with Sudhanva?

Meaning today and context

Prahlada begins by asking, not assuming. A good judge first finds out what has happened.

Prahlada asks his son whether he and Sudhanva have become friends.

3.19 Virochana

na me sudhanvanā sakhyaṃ prāṇayorvipaṇāvahe | prahrāda tattvāṃ pṛcchāmi mā praśnamanṛtaṃ vadīḥ ||

Virochana said: I have no friendship with Sudhanva; we have staked our lives. Prahlada, I ask you this: do not answer the question falsely.

Meaning today and context

Even the son asks his father for the truth, not for a favour. Both sides know what kind of man Prahlada is.

Virochana explains that they have staked their lives and asks his father to answer truthfully.

3.20 Prahlada

udakaṃ madhuparkaṃ cāpyānayantu sudhanvane | brahmannabhyarcanīyo'si śvetā gauḥ pīvarīkṛtā ||

Prahlada said: Let water and the honey-drink be brought for Sudhanva. Brahmin, you are worthy of honour; a white cow has been fattened for you.

Meaning today and context

Prahlada honours his son's rival as a guest. Courtesy to the other side comes before the dispute.

Before answering, Prahlada orders the customary hospitality for his guest Sudhanva, a brahmin.

3.21 Sudhanva

udakaṃ madhuparkaṃ ca patha evārpitaṃ mama | prahrāda tvaṃ tu nau praśnaṃ tathyaṃ prabrūhi pṛcchatoḥ ||

Sudhanva said: Water and the honey-drink were already offered to me on the way. But you, Prahlada, tell us truly the answer to the question we ask.

Meaning today and context

Sudhanva does not want courtesies; he wants the truth. Hospitality is no substitute for a fair answer.

Sudhanva declines further hospitality and asks only for a true answer.

3.22 Prahlada

putro vānyo bhavānbrahmansākṣye caiva bhavetsthitaḥ | tayorvivadatoḥ praśnaṃ kathamasmadvidho vadet ||

Prahlada said: Brahmin, here is my son on one side and you on the other, and I am set up as witness. How should one like me answer the question of two who are disputing?

Meaning today and context

Prahlada does not pretend the choice is easy. Being asked to judge between your own family and an outsider is one of the hardest tests of honesty, at home or at work.

Prahlada names his dilemma: he must serve as witness and judge in a dispute between his own son and a brahmin guest.

3.23 Prahlada

atha yo naiva prabrūyātsatyaṃ vā yadi vānṛtam | etatsudhanvanpṛcchāmi durvivaktā sma kiṃ vaset ||

And one who says nothing at all, neither the truth nor a lie: this I ask you, Sudhanva. Where does one who answers wrongly dwell?

Speaking up is right, but if telling the truth would put you or someone else in danger, first seek safe support: a trusted person, a lawyer, or the police (112); women can call 181.

Meaning today and context

Prahlada sees that silence can be its own kind of false witness. When you know the truth and are asked, keeping quiet to avoid trouble is also a choice with consequences.

Still in Vidura's story, Prahlada asks Sudhanva what becomes of a witness who answers falsely, or who stays silent and says nothing at all.

3.24 Sudhanva

yāṃ rātrimadhivinnā strī yāṃ caivākṣaparājitaḥ | yāṃ ca bhārābhitaptāṅgo durvivaktā sma tāṃ vaset ||

Sudhanva said: The night spent by a wife whose husband has taken another wife, by a man beaten at dice, by one whose body aches under a heavy load: that is the night the false witness dwells in.

Meaning today and context

A lie told in testimony does not end when the hearing ends. It keeps you awake, like humiliation, loss or pain that will not let you rest.

Sudhanva answers Prahlada with images of misery: the false witness lives through the kind of night these people suffer.

3.25 Sudhanva

nagare pratiruddhaḥ sanbahirdvāre bubhukṣitaḥ | amitrānbhūyasaḥ paśyandurvivaktā sma tāṃ vaset ||

Shut out of the city, hungry at the outer gate, seeing enemies all around: that is the night the false witness dwells in.

Meaning today and context

Lying cuts you off: from your own peace, and from people who would have trusted you. The liar ends up outside, watching for enemies.

Sudhanva continues his description of the false witness's state.

3.26 Sudhanva

pañca paśvanṛte hanti daśa hanti gavānṛte | śatamaśvānṛte hanti sahasraṃ puruṣānṛte ||

Lying about cattle, one destroys five; lying about a cow, ten; lying about a horse, a hundred; lying about a man, a thousand.

Meaning today and context

In the old teaching the false witness ruins generations of his own family. The point holds today: the more that hangs on your word, the more damage a lie does, and lying about a person is gravest of all.

Sudhanva lays down the old teaching on false witness: the graver the matter lied about, the greater the ruin brought on one's line.

3.27 Sudhanva

hanti jātānajātāṃśca hiraṇyārthe'nṛtaṃ vadan | sarvaṃ bhūmyanṛte hanti mā sma bhūmyanṛtaṃ vadīḥ ||

Speaking falsely for gold, one destroys those born and those yet unborn. Speaking falsely about land, one destroys everything. Never speak falsely about land.

This is not legal advice. If family pressure to lie, or speaking the truth in a property dispute, puts you in danger, seek safe support first: a lawyer, a trusted elder, or the police (112); women can call 181.

Meaning today and context

Lies about money and property poison families for generations: inheritance fights, forged papers, cousins who never speak again. Be most careful with the truth exactly where the stakes are land and wealth.

Sudhanva completes the teaching: lies told for gold or land are the most ruinous. Vidura will later turn this line on Dhritarashtra, who is withholding the Pandavas' land.

3.28 Prahlada

mattaḥ śreyānaṅgirā vai sudhanvā tvadvirocana | mātāsya śreyasī mātustasmāttvaṃ tena vai jitaḥ ||

Prahlada said: Angiras is greater than I am; Sudhanva is greater than you, Virochana; his mother is greater than your mother. Therefore you have been defeated by him.

The story compares people by lineage, as its setting did; the lesson is Prahlada's honest verdict, not that anyone is superior by birth. Speaking the truth is right, but if it would put you or someone else in danger, seek safe support first: a trusted person, a lawyer, or the police (112); women can call 181.

Meaning today and context

Prahlada tells the truth knowing it may cost his son's life. Honesty that bends for family is not honesty. When you are a witness, a referee or a reviewer, your loyalty is to the truth, even against your own.

Prahlada gives his verdict, against his own son: Sudhanva is superior, and Virochana has lost the wager of his life.

3.29 Prahlada

virocana sudhanvāyaṃ prāṇānāmīśvarastava | sudhanvanpunaricchāmi tvayā dattaṃ virocanam ||

Virochana, this Sudhanva is now master of your life. Sudhanva, I would ask you to give Virochana back to me.

Meaning today and context

Prahlada first states the truth plainly and only then asks for mercy. You can plead for someone you love, but not by twisting the facts.

Having ruled against his son, Prahlada acknowledges that Sudhanva now owns Virochana's life, and asks him for it back.

3.30 Sudhanva

Sudhanva said: Because you chose dharma and did not speak a lie out of desire, I give back to you your son, so hard to come by, Prahlada.

Meaning today and context

Prahlada's honesty is what saves his son. Truth told at a cost often earns a respect and a mercy that a lie never could, though the story does not promise it always will.

Sudhanva grants Virochana's life back to Prahlada, precisely because Prahlada chose truth over his own desire.

3.31 Sudhanva

eṣa prahrāda putraste mayā datto virocanaḥ | pādaprakṣālanaṃ kuryātkumāryāḥ saṃnidhau mama ||

Here is your son Virochana, Prahlada, given back by me. But let him wash my feet in the presence of the maiden.

Keshini is not a prize to be won by a wager; in the story the choice of husband is hers. Any marriage needs the free consent of both partners.

Meaning today and context

The story ends with Virochana's pride humbled where it was first displayed, before Keshini. Arrogance usually meets its lesson in the very place it showed off.

Sudhanva returns Virochana to his father, but asks that the proud prince wash his feet before the maiden Keshini, ending the contest.

3.32 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tasmādrājendra bhūmyarthe nānṛtaṃ vaktumarhasi | mā gamaḥ sasutāmātyo'tyayaṃ putrānanubhraman ||

Therefore, king of kings, you should not speak falsely for the sake of land. Do not, by following your sons, go to ruin with your sons and ministers.

Speaking the truth against family is right, but if it would put you or someone else in danger, seek safe support first: a trusted person, a lawyer, or the police (112); women can call 181.

Meaning today and context

Prahlada ruled against his son and saved him; Dhritarashtra keeps siding with his sons and will lose them. Covering for family in a wrong does not protect them; it takes everyone down together.

Vidura draws the moral for Dhritarashtra: like Prahlada, he must not lie about land for his sons' sake, and should give the Pandavas their share.

3.33 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na devā yaṣṭimādāya rakṣanti paśupālavat | yaṃ tu rakṣitumicchanti buddhyā saṃvibhajanti tam ||

The gods do not guard a man by taking up a stick, like a herdsman. Whom they wish to protect, they endow with understanding.

Meaning today and context

Protection rarely comes as a dramatic rescue. More often it comes as clear thinking at the right moment, which is why good judgment is worth praying and working for.

Vidura tells the king how the gods protect: not by force, but by giving good judgment.

3.34 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yathā yathā hi puruṣaḥ kalyāṇe kurute manaḥ | tathā tathāsya sarvārthāḥ sidhyante nātra saṃśayaḥ ||

The more a person sets his mind on what is good, the more all his aims succeed; of this there is no doubt.

Meaning today and context

Intentions shape actions, and actions shape outcomes. A mind turned towards doing good tends to choose well, be trusted and find its way, even when results take time.

Vidura states a general rule: success follows a mind set on the good.

3.35 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na chandāṃsi vṛjināttārayanti māyāvinaṃ māyayā vartamānam | nīḍaṃ śakuntā iva jātapakṣāśchandāṃsyenaṃ prajahatyantakāle ||

The Vedas do not carry across from sin a deceiver who lives by deceit. At the end they abandon him, as fledged birds abandon the nest.

Meaning today and context

Knowing scripture, attending worship, or quoting holy texts does not cover for a life of trickery. When it matters, what we have done counts, not what we have recited.

Vidura warns that sacred learning cannot rescue someone who lives by deceit.

3.36 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

mattāpānaṃ kalahaṃ pūgavairaṃ bhāryāpatyorantaraṃ jñātibhedam | rājadviṣṭaṃ strīpumāṃsorvivādaṃ varjyānyāhuryaśca panthāḥ praduṣṭaḥ ||

Drinking with the drunk, quarrelling, feuding with a group, coming between husband and wife, splitting kinsfolk, what the king hates, disputes between man and woman, and a corrupt path: these, they say, are to be avoided.

Not meddling between husband and wife does not mean ignoring abuse. If someone is being hurt, help them reach safety: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Some fights are traps: drinking sessions, group feuds, other couples' quarrels, splitting families, picking fights with those in power, crooked shortcuts. Staying out of them is not weakness but sense.

Vidura lists things a wise person keeps away from.

3.37 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sāmudrikaṃ vaṇijaṃ corapūrvaṃ śalākadhūrtaṃ ca cikitsakaṃ ca | ariṃ ca mitraṃ ca kuśīlavaṃ ca naitānsākṣyeṣvadhikurvīta sapta ||

A palm-reader, a merchant who was once a thief, a cheat at dice, a physician, an enemy, a friend, and a travelling actor: these seven one should not appoint as witnesses.

The professions named reflect the attitudes of their time. Do not distrust anyone because of their occupation; the point is bias and self-interest.

Meaning today and context

The lasting principle is conflict of interest: a friend or an enemy cannot judge you fairly, nor can anyone who gains from the outcome. Choose witnesses, referees and reviewers who have nothing to win.

Returning to the theme of witness, Vidura names people who should not be appointed as witnesses because of bias or doubtful dealing.

3.38 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

mānāgnihotramuta mānamaunaṃ mānenādhītamuta mānayajñaḥ | etāni catvāryabhayaṃkarāṇi bhayaṃ prayacchantyayathākṛtāni ||

The fire offering done for pride, silence kept for pride, study done for pride, sacrifice done for pride: these four, which otherwise free one from fear, bring fear when done wrongly.

Meaning today and context

Good practices done to look good can turn against us. Prayer, study, silence or charity done for status feed the ego and leave us anxious about how we appear.

Vidura warns that religious practice done for pride turns harmful.

3.39 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

agāradāhī garadaḥ kuṇḍāśī somavikrayī | parvakāraśca sūcī ca mitradhrukpāradārikaḥ ||

The arsonist, the poisoner, one who lives off an adulterous woman's son, the seller of soma, the one who violates sacred days, the informer, the betrayer of a friend, the seducer of another's wife,

This list reflects the ritual and social codes of its time. Never use it to brand or demean anyone, including a child for the circumstances of their birth.

Meaning today and context

Among the old ritual offences, the list names harms anyone recognises today: setting fire to homes, poisoning, informing on people, betraying a friend, breaking up another's marriage.

Vidura begins a list of wrongdoers whom tradition counted as guilty as the killer of a brahmin, the gravest sin of his time.

3.40 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

bhrūṇahā gurutalpī ca yaśca syātpānapo dvijaḥ | atitīkṣṇaśca kākaśca nāstiko vedanindakaḥ ||

the killer of an embryo, one who violates his teacher's bed, the twice-born who drinks liquor, the excessively harsh, the cawing carper, the denier, the reviler of the Vedas,

This list reflects the codes of its time. It is not guidance on medical or reproductive decisions, and must never be used to condemn or demean anyone, including people who do not share a faith.

Meaning today and context

Read for today, the lasting items are the abuse of a teacher's trust, addiction, and cruelty in word or deed.

Vidura continues the list of those counted as grave sinners.

3.41 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sruvapragrahaṇo vrātyaḥ kīnāśaścārthavānapi | rakṣetyuktaśca yo hiṃsyātsarve brahmahaṇaiḥ samāḥ ||

the priest who takes up the ladle for anyone, the one fallen from the sacred rites, the miser even when wealthy, and the one who harms a person who said 'protect me': all these are equal to the killers of brahmins.

This list reflects the ritual codes of its time and is not to be used to demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

The list closes with the worst betrayal of all: harming someone who came to you for protection. Those who are trusted with the vulnerable carry the heaviest duty.

Vidura ends the list, naming finally the one who harms someone who came asking for protection.

Gold is known by a torch of grass; a good man by his dealings; a hero in times of danger; a steady man in money troubles; and friends and enemies in hard calamities.

Meaning today and context

Words cost nothing; trials reveal character. You learn who your friends are, and who you yourself are, when money is tight and things go wrong.

Vidura describes how the true worth of things and people is tested.

jarā rūpaṃ harati hi dhairyamāśā mṛtyuḥ prāṇāndharmacaryāmasūyā | krodhaḥ śriyaṃ śīlamanāryasevā hriyaṃ kāmaḥ sarvamevābhimānaḥ ||

Old age takes away beauty; hope, patience; death, life; envy, the practice of dharma; anger, prosperity; serving the ignoble, good character; lust, modesty; and pride takes away everything.

Meaning today and context

Each weakness steals something specific: anger costs money and relationships, envy corrodes goodness, bad company erodes character. Arrogance is the most dangerous because it costs everything at once.

Vidura lists what each vice or force takes away from a person, ending with pride, which takes everything.

śrīrmaṅgalātprabhavati prāgalbhyātsaṃpravardhate | dākṣyāttu kurute mūlaṃ saṃyamātpratitiṣṭhati ||

Prosperity is born of good deeds, grows through boldness, takes root through skill, and is made firm by self-control.

Meaning today and context

Lasting success needs four things in order: honest beginnings, the courage to grow, real competence, and the discipline not to squander what you have built.

Vidura explains how prosperity is born, grows and lasts.

aṣṭau guṇāḥ puruṣaṃ dīpayanti prajñā ca kaulyaṃ ca damaḥ śrutaṃ ca | parākramaścābahubhāṣitā ca dānaṃ yathāśakti kṛtajñatā ca ||

Eight qualities make a man shine: wisdom, good family, self-control, learning, courage, not talking too much, giving according to one's means, and gratitude.

Meaning today and context

Most of these are in our own hands: understanding, self-control, learning, courage, speaking less, giving what we can and remembering who helped us. They make a person quietly impressive.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra the eight qualities that make a person shine.

etānguṇāṃstāta mahānubhāvāneko guṇaḥ saṃśrayate prasahya | rājā yadā satkurute manuṣyaṃ sarvānguṇāneṣa guṇo'tibhāti ||

Dear one, a single quality takes hold of all these great qualities by force: when the king honours a man, that one quality outshines all the rest.

Meaning today and context

Recognition from those in power can make anyone look brilliant, deserved or not. Leaders should know how much weight their favour carries, and use it fairly.

Vidura adds a frank observation: royal favour can outshine all eight qualities.

aṣṭau nṛpemāni manuṣyaloke svargasya lokasya nidarśanāni | catvāryeṣāmanvavetāni sadbhiścatvāryeṣāmanvavayanti santaḥ ||

These eight, king, are signs in the human world of the heavenly world. Four of them are followed along with the good; four the good themselves follow.

Meaning today and context

Vidura introduces eight marks of a heavenly life, in two groups of four.

3.48 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

Meaning today and context

Rituals, donations, study and austerities can be done for show. Self-control, honesty, straightness and kindness cannot be faked for long; they are the real test of a good person.

Vidura names the two groups of four: outward religious practices, and inner virtues only the good truly keep.

3.49 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

That is no assembly where there are no elders; they are not elders who do not speak dharma; that is not dharma in which there is no truth; and that is not truth which is mixed with deceit.

Speaking up is right, but if it would put you or someone else in danger, first seek safe support: a trusted person, a lawyer, or the police (112); women can call 181.

Meaning today and context

Seniority means nothing if the seniors stay quiet when wrong is done. A board, a panchayat, a family council or a team meeting is only worth its name if someone in it speaks the honest truth, without spin.

Vidura's famous definition of a true assembly, pointed at Dhritarashtra's court, where the elders stayed silent while Draupadi was humiliated.

3.50 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

Vidura lists ten things that draw people into association with someone.

3.51 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pāpaṃ kurvanpāpakīrtiḥ pāpamevāśnute phalam | puṇyaṃ kurvanpuṇyakīrtiḥ puṇyamevāśnute phalam ||

Meaning today and context

Our reputation and our results grow out of what we actually do. Shortcuts that harm others build a name that follows us.

Vidura states the law of action: as you act, so is your name and your fruit.

3.52 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pāpaṃ prajñāṃ nāśayati kriyamāṇaṃ punaḥ punaḥ | naṣṭaprajñaḥ pāpameva nityamārabhate naraḥ ||

Wrongdoing, done again and again, destroys wisdom. The man whose wisdom is destroyed keeps undertaking only wrong.

This describes how habits form; it is not a judgment that anyone is beyond change. For addiction, seek medical help; for despair, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Each time we repeat a wrong, it becomes easier and our sense of right grows dimmer. That is how small lies and bad habits turn into a way of life.

Vidura describes how wrongdoing becomes a habit that destroys judgment.

puṇyaṃ prajñāṃ vardhayati kriyamāṇaṃ punaḥ punaḥ | vṛddhaprajñaḥ puṇyameva nityamārabhate naraḥ ||

Good deeds, done again and again, increase wisdom. The man whose wisdom has grown keeps undertaking only good.

Meaning today and context

Goodness is also a habit. Each honest or kind act makes the next one easier, and sharpens our sense of what is right.

The positive counterpart: good done repeatedly strengthens wisdom.

Meaning today and context

Envy, cutting words and picking fights make enemies faster than we realise. Sooner or later those enemies collect.

Vidura describes the kind of person who soon brings trouble on himself.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom is mostly borrowed: from mentors, elders and people who have been there. Seeking them out is the mark of a sensible person, and leads to a life that is both good and comfortable.

Vidura defines the truly learned person as one who learns from the wise.

3.57 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

divasenaiva tatkuryādyena rātrau sukhaṃ vaset | aṣṭamāsena tatkuryādyena varṣāḥ sukhaṃ vaset ||

By day one should do that by which one may live at ease at night. In the eight months one should do that by which one may live at ease in the rainy season.

Meaning today and context

Do today what tomorrow will need. Finish the work before evening, save in the good months for the lean ones, prepare before the exam rather than the night before.

Vidura counsels foresight: prepare in advance for what is coming.

3.58 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pūrve vayasi tatkuryādyena vṛddhaḥ sukhaṃ vaset | yāvajjīvena tatkuryādyena pretya sukhaṃ vaset ||

Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Our young years shape our old age: health, savings, relationships, skills. And how we live all our life shapes what we leave behind and how we can face the end.

Vidura extends the principle of foresight to a whole lifetime and beyond.

3.59 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

jīrṇamannaṃ praśaṃsanti bhāryāṃ ca gatayauvanām | śūraṃ vigatasaṃgrāmaṃ gatapāraṃ tapasvinam ||

The image of the wife reflects its time. A woman's worth is never to be measured by age or looks, and the verse must not be used to demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

Don't judge too early, and don't celebrate too soon. A meal, a marriage, a career or a spiritual path shows its worth only when it has stood the test of time.

Vidura observes that true worth is praised only once it has been proved over time.

3.60 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

Meaning today and context

Patching a debt, a loss or a scandal with dishonest money never closes the gap; it creates a bigger one. Crooked fixes compound.

Vidura warns that ill-gotten wealth cannot fix a problem; it only opens new ones.

3.61 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

gururātmavatāṃ śāstā śāstā rājā durātmanām | atha pracchannapāpānāṃ śāstā vaivasvato yamaḥ ||

Meaning today and context

Some people are guided by a mentor's word, some only by the law. What we do in secret, where no one catches us, still has to be answered for.

Vidura names who corrects whom: the teacher, the king, and finally Yama, god of death.

3.62 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

Grouping women with misdeeds reflects the attitudes of its time. It must never be used to demean, suspect or control any woman.

Meaning today and context

Great rivers start as trickles and great people often from humble beginnings. Digging into someone's origins to judge them is pointless and unkind.

Vidura lists things whose origins one should not probe.

Read 'kshatriya' and 'twice-born' as roles of the time, not birth-based caste; never use this to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

A leader who respects the learned, shares generously and deals honestly with his own family lasts. Dhritarashtra is failing at the last of these.

Of actions, those of the intellect are best, those of the arms middling, those of the legs lowest, and those of bearing loads the lowest of all.

The ranking reflects its time. It must never be used to look down on manual work or on those who do it; all honest labour deserves respect.

Meaning today and context

In any task, thinking it through first saves more effort than force alone. A plan made with care does more than strength spent without one.

duryodhane ca śakunau mūḍhe duḥśāsane tathā | karṇe caiśvaryamādhāya kathaṃ tvaṃ bhūtimicchasi ||

Having placed sovereignty in Duryodhana, in Shakuni, in the foolish Duhshasana, and in Karna, how can you expect prosperity?

Meaning today and context

Whom you put in charge decides how things will go. Handing power to reckless or scheming people and then hoping for good results is self-deception.

Vidura confronts Dhritarashtra directly: he has handed power to Duryodhana and his circle of advisers.

Meaning today and context

Respect offered deserves to be returned. In joint and blended families, nephews, stepchildren and in-laws who treat you as a parent should be treated as your own children, not as rivals to your own.

Vidura closes the chapter by urging Dhritarashtra to treat the Pandavas, his nephews, as his own sons.
