Chapter 2 (Mahābhārata 5.34)

2.1 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

jāgrato dahyamānasya yatkāryamanupaśyasi | tadbrūhi tvaṃ hi nastāta dharmārthakuśalaḥ śuciḥ ||

Tell me what you see must be done by one who lies awake, burning within. For you, dear one, are skilled in dharma and in worldly affairs, and you are pure.

Meaning today and context

A restless night often comes from a troubled conscience. Dhritarashtra's first right step is to ask an honest person for counsel.

Still sleepless, King Dhritarashtra turns again to Vidura, his half-brother and minister, and asks what a man who lies awake and burning inside ought to do.

2.2 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

tvaṃ māṃ yathāvadvidura praśādhi prajñāpūrvaṃ sarvamajātaśatroḥ | yanmanyase pathyamadīnasattva śreyaskaraṃ brūhi tadvai kurūṇām ||

Vidura, instruct me as is right. With wisdom, and with an undaunted spirit, tell me everything about Ajatashatru: what you think is wholesome and what will bring good to the Kurus.

Meaning today and context

The king asks not for comfort but for what is wholesome. Asking for honest advice, not flattering advice, is where wisdom starts.

Dhritarashtra asks Vidura to guide him properly and, with full understanding of Yudhishthira's position, to say what is truly good for the Kurus.

2.3 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

pāpāśaṅkī pāpamevānupaśyanpṛcchāmi tvāṃ vyākulenātmanāham | kave tanme brūhi sarvaṃ yathāvanmanīṣitaṃ sarvamajātaśatroḥ ||

Fearing evil and seeing only evil, I ask you with a troubled mind. Wise one, tell me all of it exactly: everything that Ajatashatru has in mind.

Meaning today and context

When we have wronged someone, we start expecting harm from them and see danger everywhere. That fear is often our own guilt speaking.

Dhritarashtra admits that he fears evil and sees only evil ahead, and asks Vidura, with a troubled mind, to tell him exactly what Yudhishthira intends.

2.4 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

śubhaṃ vā yadi vā pāpaṃ dveṣyaṃ vā yadi vā priyam | apṛṣṭastasya tadbrūyādyasya necchetparābhavam ||

Whether it is good or bad, unwelcome or pleasing, one should say it, even unasked, to a person whose downfall one does not wish.

Meaning today and context

Real friends and true advisers tell us what we need to hear, not only what we want to hear. If you care about someone, speak up, kindly but honestly.

Vidura begins his answer with the principle behind his frankness: a well-wisher speaks the truth even when not asked.

2.5 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tasmādvakṣyāmi te rājanbhavamicchankurūnprati | vacaḥ śreyaskaraṃ dharmyaṃ bruvatastannibodha me ||

Therefore I will speak to you, king, wishing the welfare of the Kurus. Hear from me words that are beneficial and in keeping with dharma.

Meaning today and context

Good counsel comes from goodwill. Before giving hard advice, make clear that you speak because you want the other person's good.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that, wishing the Kurus well, he will now speak words that are beneficial and righteous, and asks him to listen.

2.6 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

mithyopetāni karmāṇi sidhyeyuryāni bhārata | anupāyaprayuktāni mā sma teṣu manaḥ kṛthāḥ ||

Deeds that rest on falsehood and are carried out by wrong means, Bharata, even if they succeed, do not set your mind on them.

Meaning today and context

Success won by cheating is not worth wanting. Don't let a shortcut that works tempt you into making it your way.

Vidura's first maxim on action: do not set your heart on gains that come through deceit or wrong means.

2.7 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tathaiva yogavihitaṃ na sidhyetkarma yannṛpa | upāyayuktaṃ medhāvī na tatra glapayenmanaḥ ||

In the same way, king, if an action undertaken properly and with the right means does not succeed, the wise person should not let the mind sink over it.

Meaning today and context

If you did the right thing the right way and it still didn't work, that is not your failure. Keep your heart steady and your standards intact.

Vidura completes the pair: if an action done properly and by right means still fails, the wise do not lose heart.

2.8 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anubandhānavekṣeta sānubandheṣu karmasu | saṃpradhārya ca kurvīta na vegena samācaret ||

In actions that have consequences, one should look ahead to those consequences. Having thought it through, one should act, and not act in haste.

Meaning today and context

Big decisions deserve a pause. Ask what follows from them, then act; impulse is a poor guide.

Vidura advises weighing consequences before acting and never acting on impulse.

2.9 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anubandhaṃ ca saṃprekṣya vipākāṃścaiva karmaṇām | utthānamātmanaścaiva dhīraḥ kurvīta vā na vā ||

Having considered the consequences, the ripening of actions, and also one's own strength to carry them out, the steady person should act or refrain.

Meaning today and context

Before taking something on, ask three things: what will it lead to, how will it end, and do I have the strength and means for it? Saying no is also a wise choice.

Vidura adds that the steady person weighs the consequences, the eventual results, and their own capacity before deciding to act or not.

2.10 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

One who does not know the right measure in stability, growth and decline, in the treasury, the country and the army, does not remain in the kingdom.

Meaning today and context

Anyone running a household, team or business must know where they stand: what they have, what is growing and what is slipping. Not knowing your own numbers leads to losing what you hold.

Vidura turns to statecraft: a king who does not know the true measure of his state's resources cannot hold his kingdom.

2.11 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yastvetāni pramāṇāni yathoktānyanupaśyati | yukto dharmārthayorjñāne sa rājyamadhigacchati ||

But one who keeps these measures in view as described, and is devoted to understanding dharma and worldly welfare, attains the kingdom.

Meaning today and context

Lasting success needs both: a sharp grasp of practical matters and a clear sense of what is right. Either one alone is not enough.

Vidura states the converse: the ruler who keeps these measures in view and understands dharma and artha gains the kingdom.

2.12 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na rājyaṃ prāptamityeva vartitavyamasāṃpratam | śriyaṃ hyavinayo hanti jarā rūpamivottamam ||

One should not behave improperly just because one has gained a kingdom. Lack of discipline destroys good fortune, as old age destroys the finest beauty.

Meaning today and context

A promotion, wealth or fame is not permission to become careless or arrogant. Bad conduct quietly wears away what success has given.

Vidura warns that gaining power is no licence for improper conduct, because arrogance and indiscipline destroy good fortune.

2.13 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

bhakṣyottamapraticchannaṃ matsyo baḍiśamāyasam | rūpābhipātī grasate nānubandhamavekṣate ||

A fish, drawn by appearance, swallows the iron hook hidden under choice bait, and does not see what comes after.

Meaning today and context

Many traps come wrapped in attractive offers: easy money, flattery, a tempting shortcut. Look for the hook before you bite.

Vidura uses the image of a fish that swallows a baited hook, drawn by the look of the bait and blind to what follows.

2.14 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yacchakyaṃ grasituṃ grasyaṃ grastaṃ pariṇamecca yat | hitaṃ ca pariṇāme yattadadyaṃ bhūtimicchatā ||

What can be swallowed, and should be swallowed, what once swallowed is digested, and what proves wholesome in its result: that should be eaten by one who seeks prosperity.

The image of eating is a metaphor for what one takes on. It is not dietary or medical advice, and not financial advice about any loan or investment.

Meaning today and context

Take on only what you can handle and what will be good for you in the end, whether it is a loan, a project or a gain. Don't grab what you cannot digest.

Continuing the image of eating, Vidura says one who wants to prosper should take in only what can be swallowed, digested, and is good in its outcome.

2.15 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vanaspaterapakvāni phalāni pracinoti yaḥ | sa nāpnoti rasaṃ tebhyo bījaṃ cāsya vinaśyati ||

One who plucks unripe fruits from a tree gets no juice from them, and the seed too is lost.

Meaning today and context

Rushing things before their time gives you nothing and also spoils what could have grown. Patience protects both the present and the future.

Vidura compares hasty gain to plucking unripe fruit from a tree.

2.16 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yastu pakvamupādatte kāle pariṇataṃ phalam | phalādrasaṃ sa labhate bījāccaiva phalaṃ punaḥ ||

But one who picks the fruit when it is ripe, matured in its own time, gets juice from the fruit and, from the seed, fruit once more.

Meaning today and context

Waiting for the right time doubles the reward: you enjoy the result now and keep the source that will give again.

The other half of the image: one who picks fruit when it has ripened in its time gets both the juice and, from the seed, fruit again.

2.17 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yathā madhu samādatte rakṣanpuṣpāṇi ṣaṭpadaḥ | tadvadarthānmanuṣyebhya ādadyādavihiṃsayā ||

As the bee gathers honey while protecting the flowers, so should one take wealth from people without harming them.

Meaning today and context

Whether you charge customers, collect fees or ask for help, take in a way that leaves the other person well. Gain that harms the giver dries up the source.

Vidura tells the king to draw wealth from his people the way a bee gathers honey while sparing the flowers.

2.18 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

puṣpaṃ puṣpaṃ vicinvīta mūlacchedaṃ na kārayet | mālākāra ivārāme na yathāṅgārakārakaḥ ||

One should gather flower by flower and not cut at the root, like a garland-maker in a garden, not like a charcoal-burner.

Meaning today and context

Take a little, carefully, and the source keeps giving; take everything at once and it is gone forever. This applies to money, people's goodwill and nature alike.

Vidura extends the image: be like the garland-maker who picks flower by flower, not the charcoal-maker who cuts the whole tree.

2.19 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kiṃ nu me syādidaṃ kṛtvā kiṃ nu me syādakurvataḥ | iti karmāṇi saṃcintya kuryādvā puruṣo na vā ||

'What will happen to me if I do this? What will happen to me if I don't?' Having thought over actions in this way, a person should act or not act.

Meaning today and context

When stuck on a decision, compare both paths honestly: the cost of doing and the cost of not doing. This one question clears a lot of confusion.

Vidura gives a simple test for any action: ask what will follow if you do it and what will follow if you don't.

2.20 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anārabhyā bhavantyarthāḥ ke cinnityaṃ tathāgatāḥ | kṛtaḥ puruṣakāro'pi bhavedyeṣu nirarthakaḥ ||

Some aims should not be undertaken; they are always of that kind, and in them even the effort a person makes would be fruitless.

Meaning today and context

Not every goal deserves your effort. Recognising a lost cause early saves energy for what can actually be done.

Vidura notes that some undertakings are not worth beginning at all, because they will always remain out of reach and effort on them is wasted.

2.21 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kāṃścidarthānnaraḥ prājño laghumūlānmahāphalān | kṣipramārabhate kartuṃ na vighnayati tādṛśān ||

A wise person quickly begins those undertakings that have a small root and a great fruit, and does not let obstacles hold such things up.

Meaning today and context

Some things cost little and give a lot: an apology, a phone call, a small habit. Do those now instead of putting them off.

Vidura says the wise quickly begin undertakings that need little effort and bring great results, and do not delay them.

2.22 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ṛju paśyati yaḥ sarvaṃ cakṣuṣānupibanniva | āsīnamapi tūṣṇīkamanurajyanti taṃ prajāḥ ||

One who looks at everyone with a straight and open gaze, as if drinking them in with his eyes, the people are devoted to him even when he sits silent.

Meaning today and context

People respond to sincerity and warm attention more than to speeches. A leader, parent or friend who truly sees others earns their trust without many words.

Vidura describes the ruler whom people love: one who looks on everyone straightforwardly and warmly.

2.23 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

cakṣuṣā manasā vācā karmaṇā ca caturvidham | prasādayati lokaṃ yaḥ taṃ loko'nuprasīdati ||

One who gladdens the world in four ways, with the eye, the mind, speech and action, the world is gladdened by him in return.

Meaning today and context

Kindness has four channels: how we look at people, what we wish for them, what we say and what we do. Goodwill given in all four usually comes back.

Vidura says the one who pleases the world in four ways, by eye, mind, speech and action, is in turn favoured by the world.

2.24 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yasmāttrasyanti bhūtāni mṛgavyādhānmṛgā iva | sāgarāntāmapi mahīṃ labdhvā sa parihīyate ||

One from whom all creatures shrink in fear, as deer from a hunter, even after gaining the earth up to the ocean, falls from it.

Meaning today and context

Power built on fear does not last. A boss, parent or partner whom others dread may control them for a while, but loses them in the end.

Vidura warns that a ruler whom all beings fear, as deer fear the hunter, loses even a kingdom that stretches to the sea.

2.25 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pitṛpaitāmahaṃ rājyaṃ prāptavānsvena tejasā | vāyurabhramivāsādya bhraṃśayatyanaye sthitaḥ ||

Even the kingdom of his fathers and grandfathers, gained by his own vigour, a king set on bad policy brings to ruin, as the wind scatters a cloud.

Meaning today and context

Inheritance and past effort are no guarantee. A family business, a home or a good name can be lost quickly by wrong conduct.

Vidura says that a king who rules by bad policy loses even the ancestral kingdom he won by his own vigour, as wind scatters a cloud.

2.26 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dharmamācarato rājñaḥ sadbhiścaritamāditaḥ | vasudhā vasusaṃpūrṇā vardhate bhūtivardhanī ||

For a king who practises dharma, as it has been practised by the good from the beginning, the earth, full of riches, grows and increases prosperity.

Meaning today and context

Where there is fairness and good conduct, things tend to grow: families, teams and communities thrive under honest leadership.

Vidura describes the reward of righteous rule: the land flourishes for a king who follows dharma as the good have practised it from the start.

2.27 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

atha saṃtyajato dharmamadharmaṃ cānutiṣṭhataḥ | pratisaṃveṣṭate bhūmiragnau carmāhitaṃ yathā ||

But for one who abandons dharma and follows adharma, the earth shrivels up, like a hide placed in fire.

Meaning today and context

Wrongdoing makes one's world contract: trust, support and opportunities shrink, often faster than we expect.

The converse: for a king who abandons dharma and follows adharma, the land shrinks like leather held in fire.

2.28 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ya eva yatnaḥ kriyate pararāṣṭrāvamardane | sa eva yatnaḥ kartavyaḥ svarāṣṭraparipālane ||

The very effort that is made to crush another's kingdom, that same effort should be made in protecting one's own kingdom.

Meaning today and context

Energy spent on beating rivals is often better spent caring for your own people, home and work. Look after what is yours before fighting others.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra to put into protecting his own kingdom the same effort that is spent on crushing others'.

2.29 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dharmeṇa rājyaṃ vindeta dharmeṇa paripālayet | dharmamūlāṃ śriyaṃ prāpya na jahāti na hīyate ||

One should gain the kingdom through dharma and protect it through dharma. Prosperity rooted in dharma, once gained, neither leaves one nor diminishes.

Meaning today and context

How you earn something decides whether you can keep it. Wealth, position or trust gained fairly and kept fairly are the ones that last.

Vidura sums up rightful rule: gain the kingdom by dharma and protect it by dharma, for prosperity rooted in dharma does not leave.

2.30 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

apyunmattātpralapato bālācca parisarpataḥ | sarvataḥ sāramādadyādaśmabhya iva kāñcanam ||

Even from a madman's ravings and a crawling child's babble, one should take the essence from everywhere, as one takes gold from stones.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom can come from unlikely places: a child's question, a stranger's remark, even a critic. Stay open, and pick out the gold.

Vidura says to take what is valuable from every source, even from the ravings of a madman or the babble of a child.

2.31 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

suvyāhṛtāni sudhiyāṃ sukṛtāni tatastataḥ | saṃcinvandhīra āsīta śilāhārī śilaṃ yathā ||

Gathering here and there the well-spoken words of the wise and their good deeds, the steady person should live, as a gleaner gathers grain left in the field.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom is collected a little at a time. Keep noting good ideas and good examples wherever you see them; over years they add up.

Vidura compares the wise person to a gleaner who gathers fallen grain, collecting good sayings and good deeds wherever they are found.

2.32 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

gandhena gāvaḥ paśyanti vedaiḥ paśyanti brāhmaṇāḥ | cāraiḥ paśyanti rājānaścakṣurbhyāmitare janāḥ ||

Cows see by smell, brahmins see by the Vedas, kings see by their spies, and other people with their two eyes.

Spoken about a king's intelligence service. It is not a licence to spy on family members, partners or employees.

Meaning today and context

Everyone has a means of knowing suited to their role. Someone responsible for many people needs reliable information beyond what they can see personally.

Vidura observes that each kind of being has its own way of seeing: cows by smell, brahmins by the Vedas, kings by their informants, others by the eyes.

2.33 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

bhūyāṃsaṃ labhate kleśaṃ yā gaurbhavati durduhā | atha yā suduhā rājannaiva tāṃ vinayantyapi ||

The cow that is hard to milk suffers much trouble, king, but the one that is easy to milk, they do not even tie her up.

This is about avoiding needless friction, not about submitting to mistreatment. No one has to accept abuse or exploitation to avoid trouble; if in danger, call 112, or the women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Needless stubbornness invites force and friction. Being cooperative where it costs you nothing makes life easier for everyone.

Vidura begins an argument for yielding gracefully to the stronger: a cow that is hard to milk is handled roughly, while an easy one is left alone.

2.34 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yadataptaṃ praṇamati na tatsaṃtāpayantyapi | yacca svayaṃ nataṃ dāru na tatsaṃnāmayantyapi ||

What bends without being heated, they do not heat; and wood that is bent of itself, they do not force to bend.

Meaning today and context

Flexibility spares us pain. Those who adapt willingly are rarely forced to change under pressure.

Vidura continues the analogy: metal that bends without heating is not heated, and wood that is already bent is not forced.

2.35 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

etayopamayā dhīraḥ saṃnameta balīyase | indrāya sa praṇamate namate yo balīyase ||

By this simile, the wise person should bow before one who is stronger. One who bows to the stronger bows to Indra himself.

Bowing here means humility and avoiding a ruinous fight, not accepting abuse, bullying or injustice. If you are being harmed, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Pride that refuses to yield where yielding is right brings ruin. Recognising a stronger position, or a just claim, and giving way in time is wisdom, not weakness.

Vidura draws the moral: by this example the wise bow before one who is stronger, and bowing to the stronger is like bowing to Indra. He is quietly urging Dhritarashtra to yield to the Pandavas' just claim.

2.36 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

parjanyanāthāḥ paśavo rājāno mitrabāndhavāḥ | patayo bāndhavāḥ strīṇāṃ brāhmaṇā vedabāndhavāḥ ||

Animals have the rain cloud as their protector, kings have friends as their kin, women have husbands as their kin, and brahmins have the Vedas as their kin.

The line about women reflects the household structure of its time. It must never be used to say a woman depends on, or belongs to, her husband, or to control or limit her.

Meaning today and context

Everyone needs a source of support. For those in power especially, true friends are the real safety net.

Vidura lists who depends on whom for support: animals on rain clouds, kings on friends, women on husbands, brahmins on the Vedas.

2.37 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

satyena rakṣyate dharmo vidyā yogena rakṣyate | mṛjayā rakṣyate rūpaṃ kulaṃ vṛttena rakṣyate ||

Dharma is protected by truth, learning by practice, beauty by cleanliness, and a family by good conduct.

Meaning today and context

Good things need keeping up. Values survive through honesty, knowledge through regular practice, and a family's good name through how its members actually behave.

Vidura names what protects four precious things: truth protects dharma, practice protects learning, care protects beauty, conduct protects a family.

2.38 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

mānena rakṣyate dhānyamaśvānrakṣatyanukramaḥ | abhīkṣṇadarśanādgāvaḥ striyo rakṣyāḥ kucelataḥ ||

Grain is protected by measuring, horses by regular exercise, cows by frequent looking after, and women are to be protected from going in poor clothes.

The last line places women among things to be guarded and is read differently by translators (kept from going in shabby clothes, or guarded by plain dress). It reflects its time and must never be used to control what a woman wears or to treat her as property.

Meaning today and context

Whatever we are responsible for needs regular, specific attention. Keeping track, exercise and frequent care prevent loss.

Vidura continues the list of what keeps things safe, with examples from the household and the stable.

2.39 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na kulaṃ vṛttahīnasya pramāṇamiti me matiḥ | antyeṣvapi hi jātānāṃ vṛttameva viśiṣyate ||

For one without good conduct, family lineage is no measure: that is my view. Even among those born in the lowest families, conduct alone is what sets a person apart.

The phrase 'lowest families' reflects the social hierarchy of its time. The verse itself puts conduct above birth; it must never be used to rank or exclude anyone by caste or origin.

Meaning today and context

A person's worth is shown by how they live, not by family name or background. Judge people, and yourself, by conduct.

Vidura gives his own view that birth in a good family counts for nothing without good conduct, and that conduct is what distinguishes a person.

2.40 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ya īrṣyuḥ paravitteṣu rūpe vīrye kulānvaye | sukhe saubhāgyasatkāre tasya vyādhiranantakaḥ ||

One who envies others' wealth, beauty, valour, lineage, happiness, good fortune and honour suffers a disease that has no end.

Meaning today and context

There will always be someone with more. Envy keeps us sick with comparison; noticing it and turning to our own life is the cure.

Vidura describes envy as an endless sickness of the one who resents others' good fortune.

2.41 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

akāryakaraṇādbhītaḥ kāryāṇāṃ ca vivarjanāt | akāle mantrabhedācca yena mādyenna tatpibet ||

Fearing doing what should not be done, failing to do what should be done, and revealing counsel at the wrong time, one should not drink that which intoxicates.

Not medical advice. If drinking or any substance has become hard to stop, please seek professional help; Tele-MANAS 14416 can guide you.

Meaning today and context

Intoxication loosens judgement: we do what we regret, forget what matters, and say what should stay private. Staying clear-headed protects our work and relationships.

Vidura warns against intoxication because it leads to wrong deeds, neglected duties and secrets spilled at the wrong time.

2.42 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vidyāmado dhanamadastṛtīyo'bhijano madaḥ | ete madāvaliptānāmeta eva satāṃ damāḥ ||

Pride of learning, pride of wealth, and third, pride of lineage: these intoxicate those puffed up with pride, yet these very things bring self-restraint to the good.

Meaning today and context

Education, money and family background can make a person arrogant or humble. The same gifts, held well, make us more responsible, not more superior.

Vidura names the three prides of learning, wealth and high birth, which intoxicate the vain but become sources of restraint for the good.

2.43 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

asanto'bhyarthitāḥ sadbhiḥ kiṃ citkāryaṃ kadā cana | manyante santamātmānamasantamapi viśrutam ||

When the good ever ask the wicked for some small task, the wicked begin to think themselves good, though they are well known to be bad.

Meaning today and context

Being needed by good people can puff up someone who has done nothing to deserve respect. Notice when a favour asked of you turns into vanity, and don't mistake being asked for being worthy.

Vidura, counselling Dhritarashtra on the pride of the unworthy, observes how bad people react when good people ask them for help.

2.44 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

gatirātmavatāṃ santaḥ santa eva satāṃ gatiḥ | asatāṃ ca gatiḥ santo na tvasantaḥ satāṃ gatiḥ ||

The good are the refuge of the self-controlled; the good alone are the refuge of the good. The good are the refuge even of the wicked, but the wicked are never the refuge of the good.

Meaning today and context

In a crisis, everyone, even people who behave badly, turns to someone decent. Choose such people as your circle, and try to be that kind of person for others.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that good people are the shelter of everyone, even of the wicked, while the wicked are never a shelter for the good.

2.45 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

jitā sabhā vastravatā samāśā gomatā jitā | adhvā jito yānavatā sarvaṃ śīlavatā jitam ||

The assembly is won by one who is well dressed; the hope of milk by one who owns cows; the road by one who has a carriage. But one who has good character wins everything.

Meaning today and context

Looks, possessions and connections each open a particular door. Good character opens all of them, and keeps them open long after first impressions fade.

Vidura contrasts outward advantages with good character: each advantage wins one thing, but character wins everything.

2.46 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

śīlaṃ pradhānaṃ puruṣe tadyasyeha praṇaśyati | na tasya jīvitenārtho na dhanena na bandhubhiḥ ||

Character is the chief thing in a person. One whose character is destroyed here has no use for life, nor for wealth, nor for kinsmen.

The verse praises character; it does not say a person who has done wrong should not live. If you feel your life is worthless after a mistake or disgrace, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Wealth and family cannot make up for a life without integrity; character is what gives everything else its worth. It is also something that can be rebuilt by changed conduct.

Vidura continues on good character (shila), calling it the chief thing in a person.

2.47 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

āḍhyānāṃ māṃsaparamaṃ madhyānāṃ gorasottaram | lavaṇottaraṃ daridrāṇāṃ bhojanaṃ bharatarṣabha ||

For the rich, O best of Bharatas, the meal is mostly meat; for the middle class, milk and its products are best; for the poor, the chief thing is salt.

Meaning today and context

Vidura is setting up a contrast, not ranking people. What we have on our plate says little about how much we enjoy it, as the next verse shows.

Vidura describes what different classes of people eat, leading into a point about hunger and enjoyment.

2.48 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

saṃpannataramevānnaṃ daridrā bhuñjate sadā | kṣutsvādutāṃ janayati sā cāḍhyeṣu sudurlabhā ||

The poor always eat food that is all the more delicious, for hunger creates flavour, and that is very rare among the rich.

Meaning today and context

Enjoyment depends on our own state more than on luxury. When we have too much, we lose the appetite that makes simple things sweet.

Vidura completes the contrast: the poor enjoy their food more, because hunger gives it taste.

2.49 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

prāyeṇa śrīmatāṃ loke bhoktuṃ śaktirna vidyate | daridrāṇāṃ tu rājendra api kāṣṭhaṃ hi jīryate ||

In this world the wealthy, as a rule, lack the power to eat and digest; but for the poor, O king of kings, even wood is digested.

A proverb-style exaggeration, not medical or dietary advice. It does not romanticise poverty or hunger, which are real hardships.

Meaning today and context

Comfort and plenty can make us soft and dull our capacity to enjoy. Some effort and simplicity keep body and mind vigorous.

Vidura adds, with deliberate exaggeration, that the wealthy often cannot even digest what they eat, while the poor can digest anything.

2.50 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

avṛttirbhayamantyānāṃ madhyānāṃ maraṇādbhayam | uttamānāṃ tu martyānāmavamānātparaṃ bhayam ||

The lowest fear the loss of livelihood; the middling fear death; but the best of mortals fear dishonour above all.

Fear of losing one's livelihood is real and is not a sign of being lesser. If shame or humiliation feels unbearable, please reach out: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

What we fear shows what we value. Caring about acting honourably is a sign of maturity; it is meant to guide conduct, not to crush someone who has been humiliated.

Vidura describes what different kinds of people fear most.

2.51 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

aiśvaryamadapāpiṣṭhā madāḥ pānamadādayaḥ | aiśvaryamadamatto hi nāpatitvā vibudhyate ||

Of all intoxications, such as the intoxication of drink, the intoxication of power is the most sinful; for one drunk with power does not come to his senses until he has fallen.

Meaning today and context

Power and status can blind us more completely than any drug, because no one around us dares to say so. Without honest feedback, many people only wake up after a fall.

Vidura warns Dhritarashtra that among all kinds of intoxication, the intoxication of power is the worst.

2.52 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

indriyairindriyārtheṣu vartamānairanigrahaiḥ | tairayaṃ tāpyate loko nakṣatrāṇi grahairiva ||

By the senses, unrestrained and roaming among their objects, this world is tormented, as the stars are by the planets.

Meaning today and context

Much of the restlessness we feel comes from senses pulled in every direction. Unchecked, they quietly run our days.

Vidura begins a long passage on mastering the senses, comparing their effect on people to planets afflicting the stars.

2.53 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yo jitaḥ pañcavargeṇa sahajenātmakarśinā | āpadastasya vardhante śuklapakṣa ivoḍurāṭ ||

One who is conquered by the group of five, innate and wasting the self, sees his troubles grow like the moon in the bright fortnight.

Meaning today and context

Habits we give in to don't stay the same size; they grow a little every day until they shape our whole life. Small daily control prevents large troubles.

Vidura says that one overcome by the five senses, which are born with us and wear us down, sees his troubles grow steadily.

2.54 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

avijitya ya ātmānamamātyānvijigīṣate | amitrānvājitāmātyaḥ so'vaśaḥ parihīyate ||

One who, without conquering himself, seeks to master his ministers, or who, without mastering his ministers, seeks to conquer his enemies, is helpless and is ruined.

Meaning today and context

Leadership starts from the inside out. Trying to control a team, or compete with rivals, while you can't manage your own temper and habits rarely works.

Vidura applies self-mastery to kingship: a ruler who tries to control ministers or enemies without first controlling himself fails.

2.55 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

One who first conquers himself, as one would a country, and only then his ministers and enemies, does not seek victory in vain.

Meaning today and context

Before trying to win at work or change others, get your own house in order: your habits, temper and priorities. Self-mastery is the base every other success stands on.

Vidura gives the right order: conquer yourself first, as if you were a kingdom, then your ministers and enemies.

2.56 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vaśyendriyaṃ jitāmātyaṃ dhṛtadaṇḍaṃ vikāriṣu | parīkṣyakāriṇaṃ dhīramatyantaṃ śrīrniṣevate ||

Fortune serves to the utmost one whose senses are under control, who has won over his ministers, who holds the rod of justice over wrongdoers, who acts after careful examination, and who is steady.

'Holding the rod over wrongdoers' refers to a ruler's lawful justice. It is not a licence for anyone to punish or harm others personally.

Meaning today and context

Lasting success comes to people who govern themselves, keep the trust of their team, hold people fairly accountable, check before acting, and stay calm. It's a good checklist for anyone who leads.

Vidura lists the qualities of a ruler with whom prosperity stays.

2.57 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

rathaḥ śarīraṃ puruṣasya rājannātmā niyantendriyāṇyasya cāśvāḥ | tairapramattaḥ kuśalaḥ sadaśvairdāntaiḥ sukhaṃ yāti rathīva dhīraḥ ||

The body of a person is the chariot, O king, the self is the driver, and the senses are its horses. With these good horses well tamed, the careful, skilled and steady person travels happily, like a good charioteer.

Meaning today and context

Your senses and energies are not enemies; they are horses that can carry you far once trained. The goal is not to stop them but to steer them.

Vidura uses the image of the chariot: body as chariot, self as driver, senses as horses.

2.58 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

etānyanigṛhītāni vyāpādayitumapyalam | avidheyā ivādāntā hayāḥ pathi kusārathim ||

These senses, when unrestrained, are able even to destroy a person, as unruly, untamed horses on the road destroy a bad charioteer.

Meaning today and context

Impulses that seem harmless can wreck health, relationships and careers if no one is holding the reins. The danger is not in having them but in letting them drive.

Vidura completes the chariot image: untamed senses can destroy their owner as wild horses kill a poor driver.

2.59 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anarthamarthataḥ paśyannarthaṃ caivāpyanarthataḥ | indriyaiḥ prasṛto bālaḥ suduḥkhaṃ manyate sukham ||

Seeing harm as gain and gain as harm, the fool, carried away by his senses, takes great misery for happiness.

Meaning today and context

When cravings run the show, we see things upside down: what harms us looks attractive and what helps us looks like a loss. Pausing to ask 'what will this really bring?' restores sight.

Vidura describes how the senses distort judgement in a foolish person.

2.60 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dharmārthau yaḥ parityajya syādindriyavaśānugaḥ | śrīprāṇadhanadārebhya kṣipraṃ sa parihīyate ||

One who abandons dharma and artha and becomes a follower of the senses is quickly deprived of fortune, life, wealth and wife.

Meaning today and context

When pleasure crowds out both integrity and practical sense, the losses come fast: money, health, and the people closest to us.

Vidura warns what happens to one who abandons right conduct and sensible purpose to follow the senses.

2.61 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

arthānāmīśvaro yaḥ syādindriyāṇāmanīśvaraḥ | indriyāṇāmanaiśvaryādaiśvaryādbhraśyate hi saḥ ||

One who is master of wealth but not master of his senses falls from his mastery, because he has no mastery over his senses.

Meaning today and context

Money and position don't protect you from your own impulses. Without self-control, people lose what they have built, however much it was.

Vidura says that mastery over wealth without mastery over the senses does not last.

2.62 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ātmanātmānamanvicchenmanobuddhīndriyairyataiḥ | ātmaiva hyātmano bandhurātmaiva ripurātmanaḥ ||

One should seek the self by the self, with mind, understanding and senses restrained; for the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is its enemy.

Meaning today and context

No one else can save or ruin us as thoroughly as we can ourselves. Treat yourself as a friend: discipline yourself kindly, and don't become your own worst enemy.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra to seek the self through a disciplined mind, understanding and senses, for the self is its own friend and its own enemy.

2.63 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kṣudrākṣeṇeva jālena jhaṣāvapihitāvubhau | kāmaśca rājankrodhaśca tau prajñānaṃ vilumpataḥ ||

As two big fish caught in a net of fine mesh tear it apart, so desire and anger, O king, tear apart wisdom.

Meaning today and context

However carefully we reason, strong desire or anger can rip through it in a moment. Make big decisions when these have settled, not while they are thrashing.

Vidura compares desire and anger to two large fish that tear through a fine net.

2.64 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

samavekṣyeha dharmārthau saṃbhārānyo'dhigacchati | sa vai saṃbhṛtasaṃbhāraḥ satataṃ sukhamedhate ||

One who, after weighing dharma and artha here, acquires the means of life, being well provided, always grows in happiness.

Meaning today and context

Earning and saving are good, as long as you ask both 'is it right?' and 'is it wise?'. Wealth gathered that way supports a happy life instead of troubling it.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that one who gathers resources while keeping both right conduct and real interest in view prospers lastingly.

2.65 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yaḥ pañcābhyantarāñśatrūnavijitya matikṣayān | jigīṣati ripūnanyānripavo'bhibhavanti tam ||

One who, without conquering the five inner enemies that destroy the mind, seeks to conquer other foes, is overpowered by those foes.

Meaning today and context

Rivals win easily against someone ruled by impulse, anger or craving. The first battle is always within.

Vidura repeats that inner enemies must be conquered before outer ones.

2.66 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dṛśyante hi durātmāno vadhyamānāḥ svakarmabhiḥ | indriyāṇāmanīśatvādrājāno rājyavibhramaiḥ ||

The evil-minded are seen to be destroyed by their own deeds; and kings, through lack of mastery over their senses, by the confusions that kingship brings.

Meaning today and context

Most downfalls are self-inflicted. History and the news are full of powerful people undone not by enemies but by their own lack of restraint.

Vidura points to examples: the wicked are brought down by their own deeds, and kings by the confusions of power, for lack of self-mastery.

2.67 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

asaṃtyāgātpāpakṛtāmapāpāṃstulyo daṇḍaḥ spṛśate miśrabhāvāt | śuṣkeṇārdraṃ dahyate miśrabhāvāttasmātpāpaiḥ saha saṃdhiṃ na kuryāt ||

By not leaving wrongdoers, the innocent are touched by the same punishment, because they are mixed together; the wet wood burns along with the dry when they are mixed. Therefore one should not make alliance with the wicked.

Being careful about associations is not a reason to cut someone off without cause or to shun people for their background. If someone is harming you or others, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Stay close to people doing wrong and you may share their consequences, even if you did nothing yourself. Choose your associates, partners and groups carefully.

Vidura, with the Kauravas' companions in mind, warns that keeping close company with wrongdoers brings their punishment on the innocent too.

2.68 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nijānutpatataḥ śatrūnpañca pañcaprayojanān | yo mohānna nigṛhṇāti tamāpadgrasate naram ||

The five enemies of one's own, rising up, each with its five pursuits: whoever through delusion does not restrain them is swallowed by calamity.

Meaning today and context

The urges that bring us down come from inside, not outside. Ignoring them out of denial or confusion lets them grow into real trouble.

Vidura returns to the five senses as enemies born within, each with its own object.

2.69 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anasūyārjavaṃ śaucaṃ saṃtoṣaḥ priyavāditā | damaḥ satyamanāyāso na bhavanti durātmanām ||

Freedom from envy, straightforwardness, purity, contentment, pleasant speech, self-control, truthfulness and calmness: these are not found in the evil-minded.

Meaning today and context

This list works as a mirror and a test: how free am I of envy, how honest, how content, how kind in speech? It also helps judge whom to trust.

Vidura lists eight virtues that are never found in the evil-minded.

2.70 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ātmajñānamanāyāsastitikṣā dharmanityatā | vākcaiva guptā dānaṃ ca naitānyantyeṣu bhārata ||

Knowledge of the self, calmness, endurance, steady devotion to dharma, guarded speech and generosity: these are not found among the base, O Bharata.

'The base' (antya) here refers to character, not to birth or caste. The verse must never be used to look down on anyone because of community or social position.

Meaning today and context

Nobility is shown by inner qualities: self-awareness, patience, steadiness in what is right, careful speech and giving. These are what to cultivate in yourself.

Vidura lists six further qualities that the base and ignoble lack.

2.71 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ākrośaparivādābhyāṃ vihiṃsantyabudhā budhān | vaktā pāpamupādatte kṣamamāṇo vimucyate ||

The ignorant wound the wise with abuse and slander. The speaker takes on the sin; the one who forgives is set free.

Forgiveness does not mean staying in abuse or putting up with ongoing harassment. If you are being abused or threatened, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

When someone insults you, the harm of those words belongs to them. Not carrying the insult around, not hitting back, leaves you lighter and free.

Vidura says that when fools insult the wise, the sin stays with the speaker, while the one who forgives is freed.

2.72 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

hiṃsā balamasādhūnāṃ rājñāṃ daṇḍavidhirbalam | śuśrūṣā tu balaṃ strīṇāṃ kṣamā guṇavatāṃ balam ||

Violence is the strength of the wicked; the rule of punishment is the strength of kings; service is the strength of women; forgiveness is the strength of the virtuous.

The line about women reflects its time. It must never be used to confine women to service or to control or demean anyone. Forgiveness also does not mean staying in abuse; for danger, call police 112 or women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

The point that lasts is the last line: those with real character draw their strength from forgiveness, not from force.

Vidura names the different kinds of strength that different people rely on.

2.73 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vāksaṃyamo hi nṛpate suduṣkaratamo mataḥ | arthavacca vicitraṃ ca na śakyaṃ bahu bhāṣitum ||

Restraint of speech, O king, is considered the hardest of all; nor is it possible to speak at length in a way that is both meaningful and pleasing.

Holding back words is harder than it looks, and the more we talk, the less of it is worth hearing. Say less, and make it count.

Vidura begins a passage on speech, calling restraint of speech the hardest discipline.

2.74 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

abhyāvahati kalyāṇaṃ vividhā vāksubhāṣitā | saiva durbhāṣitā rājannanarthāyopapadyate ||

Speech of many kinds, when well spoken, brings about good; the very same speech, badly spoken, O king, leads to harm.

Meaning today and context

It is often not what we say but how we say it. The same truth, put kindly or harshly, can heal a relationship or break it.

Vidura says the same speech can bring good or harm depending on how it is spoken.

2.75 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

saṃrohati śarairviddhaṃ vanaṃ paraśunā hatam | vācā duruktaṃ bībhatsaṃ na saṃrohati vākkṣatam ||

A forest pierced by arrows or felled by the axe grows again; but a wound made by words, cruel and harshly spoken, does not heal.

Meaning today and context

Physical damage often mends; words said in anger can stay with a person for years. Before speaking harshly to a child, partner or colleague, remember that you can't take it back.

Vidura's famous comparison: a forest cut down grows back, but a wound from harsh words does not heal.

2.76 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

karṇinālīkanārācā nirharanti śarīrataḥ | vākśalyastu na nirhartuṃ śakyo hṛdiśayo hi saḥ ||

Barbed arrows, reed shafts and iron darts can be drawn out of the body; but the dart of words cannot be drawn out, for it lies in the heart.

Meaning today and context

Some words lodge deep and keep hurting long after they're spoken. If you carry such words from someone else, it may help to talk about them; if you've said them, a sincere apology matters.

Vidura continues: arrows can be pulled from the body, but the barb of words lodges in the heart.

2.77 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

vāksāyakā vadanānniṣpatanti yairāhataḥ śocati rātryahāni | parasya nāmarmasu te patanti tānpaṇḍito nāvasṛjetpareṣu ||

Arrows of words fly from the mouth; struck by them, one grieves day and night. They strike nowhere but in another's vital places; the wise should not let them loose at others.

Meaning today and context

Cutting words go straight to a person's weakest point, which is often why we use them. Wisdom is knowing where it would hurt and choosing not to aim there.

Vidura concludes on speech: word-arrows fly from the mouth and wound the vital places, so the wise do not shoot them at others.

2.78 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yasmai devāḥ prayacchanti puruṣāya parābhavam | buddhiṃ tasyāpakarṣanti so'pācīnāni paśyati ||

The person to whom the gods intend to give defeat, from him they first take away his understanding; and he sees things perversely.

Meaning today and context

Before a big fall there is usually a stretch of poor judgement, where wrong choices look right. If everyone around you is warning you, take it as a sign to stop and look again.

Turning toward Dhritarashtra's own situation, Vidura says that when ruin is coming, a person's judgement is taken away first.

2.79 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

buddhau kaluṣabhūtāyāṃ vināśe pratyupasthite | anayo nayasaṃkāśo hṛdayānnāpasarpati ||

When the understanding has become clouded and destruction is at hand, wrong policy that looks like right policy does not leave the heart.

Meaning today and context

The most dangerous mistakes are the ones that feel completely justified. When a plan seems obviously right yet wise people object, it is worth asking whether your own judgement has been clouded.

Vidura continues: when understanding is clouded and ruin is near, bad policy that looks like good policy will not leave the heart.

2.80 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

This very understanding, O Bharata, has seized your sons through their enmity with the Pandavas, and you do not recognise it.

Meaning today and context

Love for our own can blind us to their faults. A parent or leader who can't see where their people are going wrong may share in the ruin that follows.

Vidura applies the warning directly: Dhritarashtra's sons are already in the grip of such clouded understanding through their hostility to the Pandavas.

2.81 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

rājā lakṣaṇasaṃpannastrailokyasyāpi yo bhavet | śiṣyaste śāsitā so'stu dhṛtarāṣṭra yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||

Yudhishthira, a king endowed with every royal mark, who could be ruler even of the three worlds, let him be your ruler, Dhritarashtra, while remaining your disciple.

Meaning today and context

Vidura's practical proposal: give power to the one most fit to hold it, while keeping the elder honoured.

Vidura urges Dhritarashtra to let Yudhishthira, who is fit to rule even the three worlds, be the ruler while remaining obedient to him.

2.82 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

atīva sarvānputrāṃste bhāgadheyapuraskṛtaḥ | tejasā prajñayā caiva yukto dharmārthatattvavit ||

He far surpasses all your sons, favoured by fortune, endowed with brilliance and wisdom, and knowing the truth of dharma and artha.

Meaning today and context

Vidura's case for Yudhishthira rests on qualities: wisdom, energy and a grasp of both what is right and what is practical.

Vidura praises Yudhishthira as surpassing all of Dhritarashtra's sons.

2.83 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ānṛśaṃsyādanukrośādyo'sau dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ | gauravāttava rājendra bahūnkleśāṃstitikṣati ||

That best of the upholders of dharma, out of gentleness, compassion and his respect for you, O king of kings, endures many hardships.

Meaning today and context

Vidura reminds the king that Yudhishthira's patience comes from goodness and respect, not weakness, and should not be exploited.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra that Yudhishthira has endured many hardships out of kindness, compassion and respect for him.
