When the mind cannot settle, the old king does not reach for distraction; he sends for the one person who will tell him the truth.

Vaishampayana, narrating to King Janamejaya, opens the scene: on the night before the Pandavas' reply is to be heard, the sleepless King Dhritarashtra sends for Vidura.

1.2 Vaishampayana to Janamejaya

prahito dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa dūtaḥ kṣattāramabravīt | īśvarastvāṃ mahārājo mahāprājña didṛkṣati ||

Sent by Dhritarashtra, the messenger said to Vidura: "O wise one, the great king, our master, wishes to see you."

Meaning today and context

Part of the setting: Vidura is called at night because his counsel is trusted, even by a king who often ignores it.

Vaishampayana continues: the messenger sent by Dhritarashtra delivers the summons to Vidura (called Kshattri).

1.3 Vaishampayana to Janamejaya

evamuktastu viduraḥ prāpya rājaniveśanam | abravīddhṛtarāṣṭrāya dvāḥstha māṃ prativedaya ||

Thus addressed, Vidura came to the royal palace and said: "Doorkeeper, announce me to Dhritarashtra."

Meaning today and context

Even the king's brother and trusted minister observes the proper courtesies at the door.

Vaishampayana continues: Vidura arrives at the palace and asks the doorkeeper to announce him.

1.4 Doorkeeper

viduro'yamanuprāpto rājendra tava śāsanāt | draṣṭumicchati te pādau kiṃ karotu praśādhi mām ||

The doorkeeper said: "King of kings, Vidura has come at your command. He wishes to pay respect at your feet. What shall he do? Instruct me."

Meaning today and context

A small courtly scene that sets the stage for the long conversation to come.

The doorkeeper reports Vidura's arrival to Dhritarashtra.

1.5 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

praveśaya mahāprājñaṃ viduraṃ dīrghadarśinam | ahaṃ hi vidurasyāsya nākālyo jātu darśane ||

Dhritarashtra said: "Let the wise, far-sighted Vidura in. For me it is never the wrong time to see Vidura."

Meaning today and context

Keep at least one person in your life whom you can call at any hour, someone who sees further than you do.

Dhritarashtra tells the doorkeeper to bring Vidura in at once.

1.6 Doorkeeper

The doorkeeper said: "Enter the inner apartments of the wise great king, Kshattri. The king tells me it is never the wrong time for him to see you."

Meaning today and context

The setting: the king's door is open to the one adviser he trusts.

The doorkeeper ushers Vidura into the king's inner apartments.

1.7 Vaishampayana to Janamejaya

tataḥ praviśya viduro dhṛtarāṣṭraniveśanam | abravītprāñjalirvākyaṃ cintayānaṃ narādhipam ||

Then Vidura entered Dhritarashtra's chamber and, with folded hands, spoke to the king, who was sunk in anxious thought.

Meaning today and context

Vidura meets a worried man with respect before he offers any advice.

Vaishampayana describes Vidura entering and finding the king lost in anxious thought.

1.8 Vaishampayana to Janamejaya

viduro'haṃ mahāprājña saṃprāptastava śāsanāt | yadi kiṃ cana kartavyamayamasmi praśādhi mām ||

Vidura said: "O wise one, I am Vidura, come at your command. If there is anything to be done, here I am. Command me."

Meaning today and context

A good counsellor begins by being available, not by lecturing.

Vidura greets Dhritarashtra and offers his service.

1.9 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

saṃjayo vidura prāpto garhayitvā ca māṃ gataḥ | ajātaśatroḥ śvo vākyaṃ sabhāmadhye sa vakṣyati ||

Dhritarashtra said: "Sanjaya has come, Vidura, and gone away after rebuking me. Tomorrow, in the middle of the assembly, he will speak the message of Ajatashatru (Yudhishthira)."

Meaning today and context

Waiting for news we fear is often harder than the news itself, especially when we half know we have done wrong.

Dhritarashtra tells Vidura why he is troubled: Sanjaya has returned from the Pandavas, rebuked him, and will deliver Yudhishthira's message in the assembly tomorrow.

1.10 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

tasyādya kuruvīrasya na vijñātaṃ vaco mayā | tanme dahati gātrāṇi tadakārṣītprajāgaram ||

"I have not learned today what that hero of the Kurus has said. That burns my limbs; it has made me sleepless."

Not medical advice. If sleeplessness or physical distress from worry goes on for weeks, please see a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Uncertainty can feel like a fever in the body. Naming it plainly, as the king does here, is the first step to dealing with it.

Dhritarashtra admits that not knowing what Yudhishthira has said is burning him and keeping him awake.

1.11 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

jāgrato dahyamānasya śreyo yadiha paśyasi | tadbrūhi tvaṃ hi nastāta dharmārthakuśalo hyasi ||

"Tell me what you see as best for one who lies awake and burning, dear one, for you are skilled in both dharma and artha."

Meaning today and context

When worry keeps you up, asking someone wise and honest for counsel is a real step, not a weakness.

The sleepless king asks Vidura, whom he trusts as skilled in dharma and worldly affairs, to tell him what is best.

1.12 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

yataḥ prāptaḥ saṃjayaḥ pāṇḍavebhyo na me yathāvanmanasaḥ praśāntiḥ | sarvendriyāṇyaprakṛtiṃ gatāni kiṃ vakṣyatītyeva hi me'dya cintā ||

"Since Sanjaya came back from the Pandavas, my mind has not had its proper peace. All my senses are out of their natural state. 'What will he say?' That alone is my worry today."

Not medical advice. Persistent anxiety or sleeplessness deserves a doctor's attention; Tele-MANAS (14416) offers free support.

Meaning today and context

Anxiety narrows the whole mind to a single question that plays on a loop. Recognising the loop is the start of stepping out of it.

Dhritarashtra describes his state: since Sanjaya returned, his mind has had no peace and his senses are disturbed by one question.

1.13 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

abhiyuktaṃ balavatā durbalaṃ hīnasādhanam | hṛtasvaṃ kāminaṃ coramāviśanti prajāgarāḥ ||

Vidura said: "Sleeplessness comes upon these: one attacked by someone stronger, the weak who lack means, one whose property has been taken, one consumed by desire, and the thief."

Not medical advice. Vidura names the worries that keep a mind awake; if sleeplessness goes on for weeks or comes with low mood, please see a doctor. If you are being threatened or harmed by someone stronger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Sleepless nights often have a cause: fear of someone stronger, lack of resources, loss, craving, or a guilty conscience. Asking honestly which one it is can point to what needs to change.

Vidura's first answer to the sleepless king: he names the kinds of people whom sleeplessness visits.

1.14 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kaccidetairmahādoṣairna spṛṣṭo'si narādhipa | kaccinna paravitteṣu gṛdhyanviparitapyase ||

"I hope you are not touched by any of these great faults, king? I hope you are not burning with greed for the wealth of others?"

Meaning today and context

Sometimes the restlessness we blame on circumstances comes from wanting what is not ours. A good friend will ask the uncomfortable question.

Vidura gently turns the question back on Dhritarashtra: is his sleeplessness caused by one of these faults, especially coveting what belongs to others (the Pandavas' kingdom)?

1.15 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

śrotumicchāmi te dharmyaṃ paraṃ naiḥśreyasaṃ vacaḥ | asminrājarṣivaṃśe hi tvamekaḥ prājñasaṃmataḥ ||

Dhritarashtra said: "I wish to hear from you words that are in keeping with dharma and lead to the highest good. In this line of royal sages, you alone are esteemed as wise."

Meaning today and context

Asking for good advice is easy; being ready to act on it is the harder part, as Dhritarashtra's story shows.

Dhritarashtra asks Vidura for righteous counsel that leads to the highest good, calling him the one wise man of the royal line.

1.16 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

niṣevate praśastāni ninditāni na sevate | anāstikaḥ śraddadhāna etatpaṇḍitalakṣaṇam ||

Vidura said: "He practises what is praiseworthy and does not practise what is blameworthy; he is not a scoffer and has faith. This is the mark of the wise."

Meaning today and context

Wisdom shows first in conduct: steadily doing what is good, avoiding what is shameful, and holding on to some trust in what is higher than yourself.

Vidura begins his famous description of the pandita, the truly wise person.

1.17 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

krodho harṣaśca darpaśca hrīstambho mānyamānitā | yamarthānnāpakarṣanti sa vai paṇḍita ucyate ||

"One whom anger, elation, arrogance, shame, stubbornness and the vanity of thinking oneself worthy of honour do not drag away from his true aims: he is called wise."

Meaning today and context

Wise people still feel anger, joy, pride or embarrassment; they just do not let those feelings steer their decisions.

Vidura continues defining the wise person: one whom strong emotions and vanity do not pull off course.

1.18 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yasya kṛtyaṃ na jānanti mantraṃ vā mantritaṃ pare | kṛtamevāsya jānanti sa vai paṇḍita ucyate ||

"One whose intended work and private deliberations others do not know, who know only what he has already done: he is called wise."

Meaning today and context

Talking about plans too early invites interference and drains the energy needed to finish them. Let the finished work speak.

Vidura continues: the wise person keeps his plans to himself until they are done.

1.19 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

"One whose work is not obstructed by cold or heat, fear or pleasure, prosperity or want: he is called wise."

Meaning today and context

Commitment means the work goes on whether the weather, the mood or the bank balance is good or bad.

Vidura continues: the wise person's work is not stopped by circumstances or moods.

1.20 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yasya saṃsāriṇī prajñā dharmārthāvanuvartate | kāmādarthaṃ vṛṇīte yaḥ sa vai paṇḍita ucyate ||

"One whose worldly understanding keeps to dharma and artha, and who chooses what is truly worthwhile over mere pleasure: he is called wise."

Meaning today and context

Practical wisdom means letting what is right and what is genuinely useful guide your choices, rather than what feels good in the moment.

Vidura continues: the wise person's practical understanding stays with dharma and real purpose, not mere pleasure.

1.21 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

yathāśakti cikīrṣanti yathāśakti ca kurvate | na kiṃ cidavamanyante paṇḍitā bharatarṣabha ||

"The wise, best of the Bharatas, wish to do what they can and do it as far as they are able, and they despise nothing."

Meaning today and context

Know your capacity and give it fully, without overreaching and without dismissing any task or person as beneath you.

Vidura continues: the wise aim and act within their capacity, and look down on nothing.

1.22 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

kṣipraṃ vijānāti ciraṃ śṛṇoti vijñāya cārthaṃ bhajate na kāmāt | nāsaṃpṛṣṭo vyupayuṅkte parārthe tatprajñānaṃ prathamaṃ paṇḍitasya ||

"He understands quickly, listens patiently, and having understood, takes up a matter for its purpose, not from desire. Unasked, he does not involve himself in others' affairs. This is the foremost sign of a wise person's understanding."

Meaning today and context

Grasp quickly, but listen long; act for good reasons, not impulses; and don't give advice or interfere where you haven't been asked.

Vidura continues: the first sign of a wise person's understanding lies in how he listens and when he speaks.

1.23 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nāprāpyamabhivāñchanti naṣṭaṃ necchanti śocitum | āpatsu ca na muhyanti narāḥ paṇḍitabuddhayaḥ ||

"People of wise understanding do not long for what cannot be had, do not wish to grieve over what is lost, and are not bewildered in misfortune."

With someone who is grieving, acknowledge the loss first. The verse warns against being stuck in endless lament; it does not say mourning is wrong.

Meaning today and context

Peace comes from letting go of what is out of reach, not getting stuck on what is gone, and keeping a clear head when things go wrong.

Vidura continues: the wise do not chase the impossible, dwell on what is lost, or lose their heads in calamity.

1.24 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

niścitya yaḥ prakramate nāntarvasati karmaṇaḥ | avandhyakālo vaśyātmā sa vai paṇḍita ucyate ||

"One who sets out only after deciding, who does not stop in the middle of a task, who does not waste time, and who is master of himself: he is called wise."

Meaning today and context

Think before you start, then see it through. Half-finished projects and wasted hours usually come from skipping one of these steps.

Vidura continues: the wise person decides first, then acts without stopping halfway.

1.25 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

āryakarmaṇi rajyante bhūtikarmāṇi kurvate | hitaṃ ca nābhyasūyanti paṇḍitā bharatarṣabha ||

"The wise, best of the Bharatas, delight in noble deeds, do what brings well-being, and do not find fault with what is for their good."

Meaning today and context

Good counsel and good habits often feel uncomfortable. The wise do not resent them; they take them up.

Vidura continues: the wise take delight in noble work and do not resent what is good for them.

1.26 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

"One who is not elated when honoured, nor pained when insulted, who stays undisturbed like a deep pool of the Ganga: he is called wise."

Meaning today and context

Praise and insult are ripples on the surface. A deep mind, like deep water, stays steady underneath.

Vidura continues: the wise person is neither inflated by honour nor scorched by insult.

1.27 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

tattvajñaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ yogajñaḥ sarvakarmaṇām | upāyajño manuṣyāṇāṃ naraḥ paṇḍita ucyate ||

"One who knows the true nature of all beings, knows the right way to do every task, and knows the means of dealing with people: such a person is called wise."

Meaning today and context

Real wisdom is three-sided: understanding how things are, knowing how to get work done, and knowing how to deal with people.

Vidura continues his description of the wise person to Dhritarashtra: knowledge of things, of method and of people.

1.28 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pravṛttavākcitrakatha ūhavānpratibhānavān | āśu granthasya vaktā ca sa vai paṇḍita ucyate ||

"One whose speech flows freely, who speaks with variety and interest, who reasons well and thinks quickly, and who can readily explain a text: he is called wise."

Meaning today and context

Clear, lively speech and quick, sound reasoning are skills that can be learned, and they let your knowledge actually help others.

Vidura continues: the wise person's gift with words and reasoning.

1.29 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

śrutaṃ prajñānugaṃ yasya prajñā caiva śrutānugā | asaṃbhinnāryamaryādaḥ paṇḍitākhyāṃ labheta saḥ ||

"One whose learning follows his understanding, and whose understanding follows his learning, and who does not break the bounds set by the noble: he earns the name of wise."

Meaning today and context

Book learning without thought is hollow, and cleverness without learning is shallow. Let each correct the other, and keep both within decent conduct.

Vidura continues: in the wise person learning and understanding support each other, within the bounds of good conduct.

1.30 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

aśrutaśca samunnaddho daridraśca mahāmanāḥ | arthāṃścākarmaṇā prepsurmūḍha ityucyate budhaiḥ ||

"One who is unlearned yet puffed up, poor yet full of grand ambitions, and who wants wealth without work: the wise call him a fool."

This criticises arrogance and wanting wealth without effort, not poverty or high hopes. Never use it to mock someone who is poor or ambitious.

Meaning today and context

Arrogance without learning, plans without means, and wanting money without effort are the classic recipe for disappointment. Big dreams are fine when matched with work.

Vidura now turns from the wise to the fool (mudha), beginning with three marks.

1.31 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

svamarthaṃ yaḥ parityajya parārthamanutiṣṭhati | mithyā carati mitrārthe yaśca mūḍhaḥ sa ucyate ||

"One who abandons his own proper concern to busy himself with another's, and who acts falsely in his dealings with friends: he is called a fool."

This is about neglecting your own duties and being false, not about helping others. Caring for someone in need is not foolishness.

Meaning today and context

Neglecting your own responsibilities to meddle in other people's affairs, and being false with friends, both end up costing you dearly.

Vidura continues listing the marks of a fool.

1.32 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

akāmānkāmayati yaḥ kāmayānānparidviṣan | balavantaṃ ca yo dveṣṭi tamāhurmūḍhacetasam ||

"One who desires those who do not want him, who hates those who care for him, and who bears enmity toward the powerful: him they call foolish-minded."

Meaning today and context

Chasing people who don't value you while pushing away those who do is a pattern worth noticing and breaking.

Vidura continues: the fool's misplaced desires and hostilities.

1.33 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

amitraṃ kurute mitraṃ mitraṃ dveṣṭi hinasti ca | karma cārabhate duṣṭaṃ tamāhurmūḍhacetasam ||

"One who makes a friend of an enemy, hates and harms his friend, and undertakes wicked deeds: him they call foolish-minded."

Meaning today and context

Be careful whom you trust and whom you turn against. Harming true friends while embracing those who wish you ill ruins lives and families.

Vidura continues: the fool who confuses friend and enemy.

1.34 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

saṃsārayati kṛtyāni sarvatra vicikitsate | ciraṃ karoti kṣiprārthe sa mūḍho bharatarṣabha ||

"One who drags his tasks out, doubts everything everywhere, and takes long over what needs to be done quickly: he is a fool, best of the Bharatas."

Meaning today and context

Endless postponing and overthinking are not caution; they are a way of letting opportunities pass. Some things need to be done now.

Vidura continues: the fool who delays, doubts and dawdles.

1.35 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anāhūtaḥ praviśati apṛṣṭo bahu bhāṣate | viśvasatyapramatteṣu mūḍhacetā narādhamaḥ ||

"One who enters uninvited, talks a great deal without being asked, and places his trust where he ought to be careful: he is a fool and the lowest of men."

Meaning today and context

Respect boundaries: go where you are welcome, speak when asked, and be thoughtful about whom you trust.

Vidura continues: the fool who intrudes, chatters and trusts carelessly.

1.36 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

paraṃ kṣipati doṣeṇa vartamānaḥ svayaṃ tathā | yaśca krudhyatyanīśaḥ sansa ca mūḍhatamo naraḥ ||

"One who blames another for a fault while doing the same himself, and one who flies into anger when he has no power to act: he is the greatest fool."

Meaning today and context

Before criticising others, check whether you do the same. And anger that can change nothing only burns the one who carries it.

Vidura continues: the worst kind of fool is the hypocrite and the one who rages without power.

1.37 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ātmano balamajñāya dharmārthaparivarjitam | alabhyamicchannaiṣkarmyānmūḍhabuddhirihocyate ||

"One who, without knowing his own strength, and abandoning dharma and artha, wants the unattainable without doing anything: he is called foolish here."

Meaning today and context

Wishing for big results without knowing your capacity, without fair means and without effort is daydreaming, not planning.

Vidura continues: the fool who misjudges his strength and wants results without effort.

1.38 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

aśiṣyaṃ śāsti yo rājanyaśca śūnyamupāsate | kadaryaṃ bhajate yaśca tamāhurmūḍhacetasam ||

"One who instructs someone unwilling to be taught, who waits on the worthless, and who attaches himself to a miser: him they call foolish-minded."

Meaning today and context

Don't pour advice into someone who won't listen, or loyalty into people who have nothing to give and won't share what they have.

Vidura continues: the fool who wastes effort on the wrong people.

1.39 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

arthaṃ mahāntamāsādya vidyāmaiśvaryameva vā | vicaratyasamunnaddho yaḥ sa paṇḍita ucyate ||

"One who, having gained great wealth, learning or power, goes about without arrogance: he is called wise."

Meaning today and context

The real test of character comes after success. Wealth, degrees or a high post should make you more humble, not less.

Vidura returns to the wise person: one who stays humble after success.

1.40 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ekaḥ saṃpannamaśnāti vaste vāsaśca śobhanam | yo'saṃvibhajya bhṛtyebhyaḥ ko nṛśaṃsatarastataḥ ||

"Who is more cruel than one who eats fine food alone and wears fine clothes himself, without sharing with those who depend on him?"

Meaning today and context

Those who work for you or depend on you have a claim on your good fortune. Enjoying it alone while they go without is a quiet kind of cruelty.

Vidura begins a run of sayings built on 'one': first, on sharing with those who depend on you.

1.41 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ekaḥ pāpāni kurute phalaṃ bhuṅkte mahājanaḥ | bhoktāro vipramucyante kartā doṣeṇa lipyate ||

"One person commits wrongs, and many enjoy the fruits. Those who enjoy go free; the doer alone is stained by the fault."

Meaning today and context

If you do something wrong for the sake of family or company, they may share the gain, but the moral weight stays with you.

Vidura continues: the one who does wrong carries the guilt, though many may share its profits.

1.42 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ekaṃ hanyānna vā hanyādiṣurmukto dhanuṣmatā | buddhirbuddhimatotsṛṣṭā hanyādrāṣṭraṃ sarājakam ||

"An arrow loosed by an archer may kill one person, or it may not. But a scheme loosed by a clever mind can destroy a kingdom along with its king."

Meaning today and context

Ideas and decisions travel much further than any single act. Use your intelligence with responsibility, and respect the reach of others' plans.

Vidura continues: the reach of a clever mind is far greater than that of a weapon.

1.43 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ekayā dve viniścitya trīṃścaturbhirvaśe kuru | pañca jitvā viditvā ṣaṭsapta hitvā sukhī bhava ||

"With one (understanding) decide between two (right and wrong); bring three (friend, neutral and foe) under control with four (conciliation, gifts, division and force); conquer five (the senses); know six (the six courses of policy); give up seven (the vices); and be happy."

The 'four means' include force (danda), meant for a ruler's lawful duties. This is not a licence to coerce or harm anyone in personal life.

Meaning today and context

A memorable checklist for a clear life: decide with a clear mind, handle people with tact, master your senses, understand your situation, and drop destructive habits.

Vidura gives a compressed numerical maxim of statecraft; the numbers are traditionally read as intellect, right and wrong, friend-neutral-foe, the four means, the five senses, the six policies and the seven vices.

1.44 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ekaṃ viṣaraso hanti śastreṇaikaśca vadhyate | sarāṣṭraṃ saprajaṃ hanti rājānaṃ mantravisravaḥ ||

"Poison kills only one person, and a weapon slays only one. But a leak of secret counsel destroys a king together with his kingdom and his people."

Meaning today and context

Confidential plans and private matters, once leaked, can damage far more than one person. Guard what you have been trusted with.

Vidura continues: leaked secret counsel is deadlier than poison or a weapon.

1.45 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ekaḥ svādu na bhuñjīta ekaścārthānna cintayet | eko na gacchedadhvānaṃ naikaḥ supteṣu jāgṛyāt ||

"Do not eat a delicacy alone; do not deliberate on important matters alone; do not travel a road alone; do not stay awake alone among those who are asleep."

Meaning today and context

Share good things, consult others on serious decisions, don't take risky journeys alone, and don't carry the night's worries all by yourself.

Vidura continues with four things not to do alone.

1.46 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ekamevādvitīyaṃ tadyadrājannāvabudhyase | satyaṃ svargasya sopānaṃ pārāvārasya nauriva ||

"That one thing without a second, O king, which you do not understand: truth is the stairway to heaven, like a boat for crossing the ocean."

Meaning today and context

Truthfulness is what carries you across difficult waters; every lie is a leak in the boat.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra the one thing without equal that he fails to grasp: truth.

1.47 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ekaḥ kṣamāvatāṃ doṣo dvitīyo nopalabhyate | yadenaṃ kṣamayā yuktamaśaktaṃ manyate janaḥ ||

"The forgiving have one fault, and no second is found: people take a forgiving person to be weak."

Forgiveness does not mean staying in abuse or letting harm continue. If you are in danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Forgiving people are sometimes mistaken for weak. That misjudgement is the only cost, and it is worth bearing, because the forgiveness itself is strength.

Vidura praises forgiveness, naming its only drawback.

1.48 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

eko dharmaḥ paraṃ śreyaḥ kṣamaikā śāntiruttamā | vidyaikā paramā dṛṣṭirahiṃsaikā sukhāvahā ||

"Dharma alone is the highest good; forgiveness alone is the supreme peace; knowledge alone is the highest vision; non-violence alone brings happiness."

Forgiveness does not mean staying in abuse or letting harm continue. If you are in danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Four anchors for a good life: do right, forgive, keep learning, and avoid harming others. Each brings its own kind of peace.

Vidura continues with four supreme things, each named as 'one'.

1.49 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dvāvimau grasate bhūmiḥ sarpo bilaśayāniva | rājānaṃ cāviroddhāraṃ brāhmaṇaṃ cāpravāsinam ||

"The earth swallows these two, as a snake swallows creatures that live in holes: a king who does not resist his enemies, and a brahmin who does not go out into the world."

'Brahmin' and 'king' here name roles (the learner-teacher and the protector), not birth or caste. Resisting enemies is a ruler's lawful duty, never a licence for personal violence.

Meaning today and context

Those who hide from the core demand of their role, whether a leader who never stands up for his people or a learner who never leaves his comfort zone, slowly fade away.

Vidura begins sayings built on 'two': the earth swallows those who fail their basic role.

1.50 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dve karmaṇī naraḥ kurvannasmiṃlloke virocate | abruvanparuṣaṃ kiṃ cidasato nārthayaṃstathā ||

"A person who does these two things shines in this world: saying nothing harsh, and not seeking favours from the wicked."

Meaning today and context

Gentle speech and self-respect in what you ask for, and from whom, earn quiet respect over a lifetime.

Vidura continues: two habits that make a person shine.

1.51 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dvāvimau puruṣavyāghra parapratyayakāriṇau | striyaḥ kāmitakāminyo lokaḥ pūjitapūjakaḥ ||

"These two, tiger among men, act on the lead of others: women who desire the one who is desired, and people who honour the one who is already honoured."

The line about women reflects the attitudes of its time. It must never be used to demean, stereotype or control women; the habit of following others' preferences is human, not a matter of gender.

Meaning today and context

We all tend to want what others want and praise whom others praise. The point today is to judge people and things for yourself, not by the crowd's approval.

Vidura continues with two kinds of people who follow others' judgement rather than their own.

1.52 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dvāvimau kaṇṭakau tīkṣṇau śarīrapariśoṣaṇau | yaścādhanaḥ kāmayate yaśca kupyatyanīśvaraḥ ||

"These two are sharp thorns that wither the body: a poor man who craves, and a powerless man who is angry."

This is not a judgement on poverty or on anger at real injustice. If you are being wronged, seeking fair redress is right; if you are in despair, Tele-MANAS (14416) can help.

Meaning today and context

Wanting what you cannot reach and raging at what you cannot change both eat away at you. Ease comes from bringing desire and anger in line with what is actually possible.

Vidura continues: two sharp thorns that wear away the body.

1.53 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dvāvimau puruṣau rājansvargasyopari tiṣṭhataḥ | prabhuśca kṣamayā yukto daridraśca pradānavān ||

These two people, O king, stand above heaven: the powerful man who is forgiving, and the poor man who still gives.

Forgiveness does not mean staying in abuse or excusing harm. If you are in danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Forgiving is easy when we cannot hit back; it means most when we could. Giving is easy from plenty; it means most when we have little. Both are measures of a large heart.

Continuing his lists of 'two', Vidura tells Dhritarashtra which two kinds of people stand even above heaven.

1.54 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nyāyāgatasya dravyasya boddhavyau dvāvatikramau | apātre pratipattiśca pātre cāpratipādanam ||

Of wealth that has come by right means, two misuses should be understood: giving it to the unworthy, and not giving it to the worthy.

Meaning today and context

Earning honestly is only half the task; how we spend and give matters too. Money handed to the wrong person and help withheld from the right one are both failures of judgement.

Vidura names two ways in which honestly earned wealth is misused.

1.55 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

trayo nyāyā manuṣyāṇāṃ śrūyante bharatarṣabha | kanīyānmadhyamaḥ śreṣṭha iti vedavido viduḥ ||

Three ways of conduct are spoken of for human beings, O best of the Bharatas: the lowest, the middle and the best. So the knowers of the Veda understand.

Meaning today and context

Most choices can be made in a poor way, an ordinary way or the best way. Simply knowing that there are grades helps us aim higher than the easiest option.

Vidura moves to lists of 'three', beginning with the three grades of conduct known to the wise.

1.56 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

trividhāḥ puruṣā rājannuttamādhamamadhyamāḥ | niyojayedyathāvattāṃstrividheṣveva karmasu ||

There are three kinds of people, O king: the best, the lowest and the middling. One should employ them fittingly in the three corresponding kinds of work.

The grading here is of ability and conduct for a task, not of birth, caste or human worth; it must never be used to look down on anyone.

Meaning today and context

A good leader matches the task to the person's ability and readiness. Giving the hardest work to the least prepared, or wasting the most able on trivial work, harms everyone.

Vidura advises the king to match people to work according to their ability.

1.57 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

traya evādhanā rājanbhāryā dāsastathā sutaḥ | yatte samadhigacchanti yasya te tasya taddhanam ||

Three, O king, are without property of their own: the wife, the servant, and the son. Whatever they earn belongs to the one to whom they belong.

This reflects the law and social order of its time. It must never be used to control a wife's, worker's or child's money or to deny anyone their rights. For financial abuse or control, seek help (women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

This records the household law of its age, when the male head held all property. Today wives, workers and children have their own rights, and their earnings are their own.

Vidura states an ancient rule of household law about who could own property.

1.58 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

catvāri rājñā tu mahābalena varjyānyāhuḥ paṇḍitastāni vidyāt | alpaprajñaiḥ saha mantraṃ na kuryānna dīrghasūtrairalasaiścāraṇaiśca ||

Four things, they say, a mighty king must avoid, and the wise should know them: he should not take counsel with men of little understanding, nor with those who procrastinate, the lazy, or flatterers.

Meaning today and context

Whom we ask for advice shapes what we decide. Before taking counsel, check whether the person thinks clearly, acts on time, works hard and will tell you the truth rather than what you want to hear.

Moving to lists of 'four', Vidura tells the king whom he must not take counsel with.

1.59 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

catvāri te tāta gṛhe vasantu śriyābhijuṣṭasya gṛhasthadharme | vṛddho jñātiravasannaḥ kulīnaḥ sakhā daridro bhaginī cānapatyā ||

May four live in your house, dear one, when you are blessed with fortune in the householder's life: an aged kinsman, a person of good family fallen on hard times, a poor friend, and a sister without children.

Meaning today and context

Prosperity carries a duty toward those in our circle who have no one else: elderly relatives, friends who have fallen on bad times, family members left alone. Our home is richer for making room for them.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra which four people a prosperous householder should give shelter to.

1.60 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

catvāryāha mahārāja sadyaskāni bṛhaspatiḥ | pṛcchate tridaśendrāya tānīmāni nibodha me ||

Brihaspati, O great king, when asked by Indra, lord of the gods, named four things that bear fruit immediately. Learn them from me.

Meaning today and context

Some things do not wait for a later reward or punishment; their effect shows at once. Vidura asks the king to pay attention to them.

Vidura introduces four things that bear fruit at once, as taught by Brihaspati to Indra.

1.61 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

devatānāṃ ca saṃkalpamanubhāvaṃ ca dhīmatām | vinayaṃ kṛtavidyānāṃ vināśaṃ pāpakarmaṇām ||

The resolve of the gods, the influence of the wise, the humility of the learned, and the ruin of those who do evil.

Meaning today and context

The presence of a wise person changes a room at once, and a learned person's humility wins trust at once. Wrongdoing, too, starts to corrode a life sooner than we think.

Vidura lists Brihaspati's four things that bear fruit at once.

1.62 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pañcāgnayo manuṣyeṇa paricaryāḥ prayatnataḥ | pitā mātāgnirātmā ca guruśca bharatarṣabha ||

Five fires should be tended with effort by a person, O best of the Bharatas: father, mother, the sacred fire, one's own self, and the teacher.

Meaning today and context

Parents, teachers, our inner life and our faith are like fires: they sustain us, and they need steady care, not occasional attention. Looking after oneself is named alongside them.

Moving to lists of 'five', Vidura names the five 'fires' a person must tend with care.

1.63 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pañcaiva pūjayaṃlloke yaśaḥ prāpnoti kevalam | devānpitṝnmanuṣyāṃśca bhikṣūnatithipañcamān ||

By honouring five in this world one gains pure renown: the gods, the ancestors, human beings, mendicants, and guests as the fifth.

Meaning today and context

A good name comes less from self-promotion than from how we treat others: honouring what is sacred, remembering those who came before, respecting people, and welcoming those who arrive at our door.

Vidura names five whom one should honour to gain a good name.

1.64 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pañca tvānugamiṣyanti yatra yatra gamiṣyasi | mitrāṇyamitrā madhyasthā upajīvyopajīvinaḥ ||

Five will follow you wherever you go: friends, enemies, those who are neutral, those you depend on, and those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

Wherever we go, we carry a web of relationships: friends, rivals, onlookers, those we rely on and those who rely on us. Knowing who is who helps us act wisely.

Vidura tells the king that five kinds of people will follow him wherever he goes.

1.65 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

pañcendriyasya martyasya chidraṃ cedekamindriyam | tato'sya sravati prajñā dṛteḥ pādādivodakam ||

If a mortal with five senses has even one sense that leaks, through it his wisdom flows away, like water from a hole at the foot of a leather bag.

Meaning today and context

One unchecked habit can undo much good sense. It is not enough to be disciplined in most areas; a single weak spot, left alone, slowly drains everything else.

Vidura warns that one uncontrolled sense is enough to drain away a person's wisdom.

1.66 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ṣaḍdoṣāḥ puruṣeṇeha hātavyā bhūtimicchatā | nidrā tandrī bhayaṃ krodha ālasyaṃ dīrghasūtratā ||

Six faults should be given up by a person here who wants to prosper: too much sleep, drowsiness, fear, anger, laziness, and procrastination.

'Sleep' here means oversleeping and sloth, not healthy rest. Enough sleep is needed for health; this is not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Progress is blocked less by lack of talent than by these six everyday habits: sleeping away the day, dullness, fear, anger, laziness and putting things off. Each one is something we can work on.

Moving to lists of 'six', Vidura names six faults that block a person's progress.

1.67 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ṣaḍimānpuruṣo jahyādbhinnāṃ nāvamivārṇave | apravaktāramācāryamanadhīyānamṛtvijam ||

A person should abandon these six as one would a leaking boat at sea: a teacher who does not teach, a priest who has not studied,

Meaning today and context

Some people hold a role but do not do it: the teacher who does not teach, the expert who has not learned. Depending on them is like trusting a leaking boat; look for someone who actually does the work.

Vidura begins a list of six who should be left behind like a leaking boat, since they fail at their basic role.

1.68 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

arakṣitāraṃ rājānaṃ bhāryāṃ cāpriyavādinīm | grāmakāmaṃ ca gopālaṃ vanakāmaṃ ca nāpitam ||

a king who does not protect, a wife who speaks unkindly, a cowherd who wants to live in the village, and a barber who wants to live in the forest.

The line on wives reflects the outlook of its time; it must never be used to demean a wife or justify abandoning a partner. Harsh speech in a relationship is a two-way matter to work on together. If you face abuse, seek help (women's helpline 181, police 112).

Meaning today and context

The examples are of people unsuited to their role: a protector who does not protect, a cowherd who will not go to the pastures, a barber who will not stay where his customers are. The point is to see whether someone fits the role they hold.

Vidura completes the list of six to be abandoned like a leaking boat.

1.69 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ṣaḍeva tu guṇāḥ puṃsā na hātavyāḥ kadā cana | satyaṃ dānamanālasyamanasūyā kṣamā dhṛtiḥ ||

Six qualities should never be given up by a person: truthfulness, generosity, diligence, freedom from envy, forgiveness, and steadfastness.

Forgiveness does not mean staying in abuse or excusing harm. If you are in danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

These six are a compact portrait of good character: honest, generous, hardworking, free of envy, forgiving and steady. They are worth holding on to especially when circumstances tempt us to drop them.

Vidura names six qualities a person must never give up.

1.70 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

He who gains mastery over the six that are always present within himself, having conquered his senses, is not touched by sins; how then by misfortunes?

Meaning today and context

Most of the trouble we get into starts with an impulse we did not check. Mastery of our senses and mind is the root from which right conduct and a steadier life grow.

Vidura says that mastery over the six ever-present powers within oneself, the senses and the mind, keeps a person free of wrongdoing.

1.71 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ṣaḍime ṣaṭsu jīvanti saptamo nopalabhyate | corāḥ pramatte jīvanti vyādhiteṣu cikitsakāḥ ||

These six live off six; a seventh is not found: thieves live off the careless, physicians off the sick,

Naming physicians here is an observation, not a reason to distrust doctors or avoid medical care.

Meaning today and context

Many make their living from other people's carelessness, needs or troubles. Being aware of this keeps us alert, especially against those who profit from our negligence.

Vidura lists six kinds of people who live off the weaknesses or needs of others.

pramadāḥ kāmayāneṣu yajamāneṣu yājakāḥ | rājā vivadamāneṣu nityaṃ mūrkheṣu paṇḍitāḥ ||

seductive women off the lustful, priests off those who sacrifice, the king off those who quarrel, and the learned always off fools.

The line about women reflects the outlook of its time and must never be used to demean or blame women. The point is about one's own lust making one easy to exploit.

Meaning today and context

Our weaknesses, whether lust, quarrelsomeness or ignorance, become someone else's income. Mastering them protects us as much as any lock.

Vidura completes the list of six who live off others.

sapta doṣāḥ sadā rājñā hātavyā vyasanodayāḥ | prāyaśo yairvinaśyanti kṛtamūlāśca pārthivāḥ ||

Seven faults, which give rise to calamity, a king should always give up; through them, kings, even when firmly rooted, are mostly destroyed.

Meaning today and context

Even secure, successful people are brought down less by outside enemies than by their own vices. Success can make us careless about the habits that slowly undermine us.

Moving to 'seven', Vidura introduces the seven vices that ruin even well-established kings.

1.74 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

striyo'kṣā mṛgayā pānaṃ vākpāruṣyaṃ ca pañcamam | mahacca daṇḍapāruṣyamarthadūṣaṇameva ca ||

Women, dice, hunting, drink, and harsh speech as the fifth; great harshness in punishment, and the misuse of wealth.

'Women' here means a ruler's compulsive pursuit of pleasure, not women themselves; it must never be used to blame or demean women. If drink or gambling has taken hold, help is available (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

These seven are still the classic ways people in power ruin themselves: chasing pleasure, gambling, cruel pastimes, drinking, harsh words, excessive punishment and squandering money. Any one of them can bring down a life or a career.

Vidura names the seven vices that ruin kings.

1.75 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

aṣṭau pūrvanimittāni narasya vinaśiṣyataḥ | brāhmaṇānprathamaṃ dveṣṭi brāhmaṇaiśca virudhyate ||

These are the eight early signs of a man who is about to perish: first, he hates brahmins, and he quarrels with brahmins,

'Brahmin' in this verse reflects the social order of its time. Read it as hostility toward teachers and people of learning and goodness; it must never be used to support caste hierarchy or exclusion.

Meaning today and context

One sign of decline is turning against those who teach and advise us honestly. When we begin to resent wise counsel, trouble is near.

Moving to 'eight', Vidura lists the signs of a man heading for ruin, centred on his hostility to brahmins (the learned).

1.76 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

brāhmaṇasvāni cādatte brāhmaṇāṃśca jighāṃsati | ramate nindayā caiṣāṃ praśaṃsāṃ nābhinandati ||

he takes away the property of brahmins, seeks to harm brahmins, delights in reviling them, and takes no pleasure in their praise,

'Brahmin' in this verse reflects the social order of its time. Read it as hostility toward teachers and people of learning and goodness; it must never be used to support caste hierarchy or exclusion. The verse describes a ruinous path and is never a licence for violence against anyone.

Meaning today and context

Enjoying others' criticism of good people, and being unable to hear them praised, shows envy at work. Such envy slowly poisons judgement.

Vidura continues the eight signs of a man heading for ruin.

1.77 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

he does not remember them when there is work to be done, and when asked, he resents them. A wise person, understanding these faults with his intelligence, should avoid them.

Meaning today and context

Forgetting wise people when decisions are being made, and being irritated when they ask something of us, are habits to notice in ourselves and drop, before they cost us.

Vidura ends the eight signs of ruin and urges the wise to avoid these faults.

1.78 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

'Deranged' (unmatta) reflects the language of its time. Mental illness is not a moral failing, and this must never be used to stigmatise anyone.

Meaning today and context

Fair leadership means earning trust, acting only on proven wrongdoing, keeping any correction in proportion, and knowing when to forgive. A family head or manager can follow the same balance.

'Equals' should be read as compatibility of values and mutual respect, not caste, class, wealth or status. It must never be used to exclude anyone or oppose a marriage on those grounds.

The man who feels deep shame before his own self becomes the teacher of all the world; boundless in radiance, good-hearted and composed, he shines by his own light like the sun.

This is about a healthy conscience, not crushing self-blame. If shame or guilt feels overwhelming, please talk to someone (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Vidura praises the person whose own conscience restrains him from wrong.

Meaning today and context

Giving others what is rightfully theirs, even within the family, is the way to peace of mind and a clear name. Holding on to what is not ours keeps conflict alive.

Vidura closes this part of his counsel by urging Dhritarashtra to give the Pandavas their rightful share of the kingdom.
