Chapter 5

5.1 Arjuna to Krishna

saṃnyāsaṃ karmaṇāṃ kṛṣṇa punaryogaṃ ca śaṃsasi | yacchreya etayorekaṃ tanme brūhi suniścitam ||

Krishna, you praise the renunciation of actions, and then again the yoga of action. Tell me, with certainty, which one of these two is better.

Meaning today and context

When good advice seems to point two ways at once, it is honest to ask for clarity. Arjuna's question is the one many of us have: should I step back from the world, or work in it?

Arjuna opens chapter 5 confused: Krishna has praised both giving up action and the yoga of action, and Arjuna asks which one is truly better.

5.2 Krishna to Arjuna

saṃnyāsaḥ karmayogaśca niḥśreyasakarāvubhau | tayostu karmasaṃnyāsātkarmayogo viśiṣyate ||

Renunciation and the yoga of action both lead to the highest good. But of the two, the yoga of action is better than the renunciation of action.

This verse favours staying in action. Neither it nor the chapter's praise of renunciation is advice to abandon family or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

You don't have to walk away from your work and family to grow inwardly. Doing your work with the right inner attitude is not a lesser path; for most people it is the better one.

Krishna answers Arjuna: both renunciation and the yoga of action lead to the highest good, but the yoga of action is the better of the two.

5.3 Krishna to Arjuna

Know him to be a constant renunciate who neither hates nor craves. Free from the pairs of opposites, mighty-armed one, he is easily released from bondage.

Meaning today and context

Renunciation is an inner state, not a change of clothes or address. If you can let go of grudges and grasping, you are free while still in the middle of your life.

Krishna explains that the person who neither hates nor craves is a true renunciate, even while acting.

5.4 Krishna to Arjuna

sāṃkhyayogau pṛthagbālāḥ pravadanti na paṇḍitāḥ | ekamapyāsthitaḥ samyagubhayorvindate phalam ||

The childish, not the wise, speak of sankhya and yoga as separate. One who is truly established in even one of them gains the fruit of both.

Meaning today and context

Arguing over which spiritual path is 'the right one' misses the point. Followed sincerely, the path of understanding and the path of selfless work arrive at the same place.

Krishna says only the immature think the path of knowledge (sankhya) and the path of action (yoga) are different; one who follows either fully gains the fruit of both.

5.5 Krishna to Arjuna

yatsāṃkhyaiḥ prāpyate sthānaṃ tadyogairapi gamyate | ekaṃ sāṃkhyaṃ ca yogaṃ ca yaḥ paśyati sa paśyati ||

The state reached by those of knowledge is reached by those of yoga as well. One who sees sankhya and yoga as one, truly sees.

Meaning today and context

Someone quietly serving others and someone in deep study or meditation are not on rival teams. The destination is the same; only the road looks different.

Krishna continues: the goal reached by followers of knowledge is reached by followers of action too; one who sees them as one truly sees.

5.6 Krishna to Arjuna

saṃnyāsastu mahābāho duḥkhamāptumayogataḥ | yogayukto munirbrahma nacireṇādhigacchati ||

But renunciation, mighty-armed one, is hard to attain without yoga. The sage disciplined in yoga reaches Brahman before long.

Not advice to abandon family or responsibilities. The verse in fact warns that renunciation without first maturing through action is a struggle.

Meaning today and context

You can't skip straight to detachment. Inner freedom is built by doing your work with care and without selfish grasping; dropping everything suddenly usually brings struggle, not peace.

Krishna explains why action is the better start: renunciation without yoga is hard to attain, while the sage disciplined by yoga soon reaches Brahman.

5.7 Krishna to Arjuna

yogayukto viśuddhātmā vijitātmā jitendriyaḥ | sarvabhūtātmabhūtātmā kurvannapi na lipyate ||

Disciplined in yoga, pure in mind, master of himself, with senses conquered, his self become the Self of all beings, he is not stained even while acting.

Meaning today and context

When you feel others as part of yourself, your actions stop being about 'me versus them'. Such work does not leave the residue of guilt, resentment or ego that self-centred work does.

Krishna describes the person established in yoga: pure, self-mastered, seeing their Self in all beings, and not stained even while acting.

5.8 Krishna to Arjuna

naiva kiṃ citkaromīti yukto manyeta tattvavit | paśyañśṛṇvanspṛśañjighrannaśnangacchansvapañśvasan ||

'I do nothing at all,' so thinks the disciplined knower of truth, while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, walking, sleeping and breathing,

This describes a realised vision of the Self. It is never an excuse to disown responsibility for one's actions or their effect on others.

Meaning today and context

The deepest self is a witness, not the busy doer of every small act. Seeing this loosens the anxious, self-important grip we have on everything we do.

Krishna describes how the knower of truth regards ordinary activity: 'I do nothing at all,' even while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, walking, sleeping and breathing.

5.9 Krishna to Arjuna

pralapanvisṛjangṛhṇannunmiṣannimiṣannapi | indriyāṇīndriyārtheṣu vartanta iti dhārayan ||

while speaking, letting go, grasping, even opening and closing the eyes, holding firmly that it is the senses that move among the objects of the senses.

'It is only the senses acting' must not be used to excuse harmful behaviour or escape accountability.

Meaning today and context

Much of life runs on its own: the body breathes, the eyes blink, the senses respond. Remembering you are the awareness behind this, not only the machinery, brings a quiet steadiness.

Krishna completes the sentence of 5.8: while speaking, letting go, grasping, opening and closing the eyes, the knower holds that it is only the senses moving among their objects.

5.10 Krishna to Arjuna

One who acts, placing all actions in Brahman and giving up attachment, is not stained by wrong, as a lotus leaf is not wetted by water.

Meaning today and context

You can be fully in the middle of work, family and money, like a lotus in water, and still not be soaked by greed and worry. Offer the work to something larger than yourself and let go of clinging.

Krishna gives the image of the lotus leaf: one who offers all actions to Brahman and gives up attachment is untouched by wrong, as a lotus leaf by water.

5.11 Krishna to Arjuna

kāyena manasā buddhyā kevalairindriyairapi | yoginaḥ karma kurvanti saṅgaṃ tyaktvātmaśuddhaye ||

With the body, the mind, the intellect, and even the senses alone, yogis perform action, giving up attachment, for the purification of the self.

Meaning today and context

Work can be a cleansing practice. When you do it without the constant 'what do I get?', it slowly clears envy, pride and restlessness from the mind.

Krishna says the yogis act with body, mind, intellect and even the senses alone, giving up attachment, to purify themselves.

5.12 Krishna to Arjuna

yuktaḥ karmaphalaṃ tyaktvā śāntimāpnoti naiṣṭhikīm | ayuktaḥ kāmakāreṇa phale sakto nibadhyate ||

The disciplined one, giving up the fruit of action, attains lasting peace. The undisciplined one, driven by desire and attached to the fruit, is bound.

Meaning today and context

The same work can bring peace or bondage; the difference is your grip on the result. Craving the outcome ties you to anxiety, while letting it go steadies you.

Krishna contrasts two people: the disciplined one who gives up the fruit of action finds lasting peace; the undisciplined one, driven by desire and attached to results, is bound.

5.13 Krishna to Arjuna

sarvakarmāṇi manasā saṃnyasyāste sukhaṃ vaśī | navadvāre pure dehī naiva kurvanna kārayan ||

Renouncing all actions with the mind, the self-controlled embodied one rests happily in the city of nine gates, neither acting nor causing others to act.

This is mental renunciation of the sense of doership, not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Renunciation here happens in the mind. You can live in your body and your world and still rest inside, without the constant feeling 'I must do, I must control.'

Krishna describes the self-controlled embodied one who, renouncing all actions with the mind, rests happily in the 'city of nine gates', the body, neither acting nor causing action.

5.14 Krishna to Arjuna

na kartṛtvaṃ na karmāṇi lokasya sṛjati prabhuḥ | na karmaphalasaṃyogaṃ svabhāvastu pravartate ||

The Lord does not create doership for the world, nor actions, nor the union of action with its fruit. It is nature that moves.

Meaning today and context

Not everything we do is ordained from above; much flows from our own conditioning and habits. Seeing that clearly is the start of changing it.

Krishna says the Lord does not create doership, actions, or the link of action to its fruit; it is one's own nature that moves.

5.15 Krishna to Arjuna

nādatte kasya citpāpaṃ na caiva sukṛtaṃ vibhuḥ | ajñānenāvṛtaṃ jñānaṃ tena muhyanti jantavaḥ ||

The all-pervading one takes on no one's wrong, nor anyone's good deeds. Knowledge is covered by ignorance; by that, beings are deluded.

Meaning today and context

No higher power keeps a ledger to punish or reward us here; our confusion comes from not seeing clearly. The work is to clear that ignorance, not to bargain for merit.

Krishna continues: the all-pervading one takes on no one's sin or merit; knowledge is covered by ignorance, and so beings are deluded.

5.16 Krishna to Arjuna

jñānena tu tadajñānaṃ yeṣāṃ nāśitamātmanaḥ | teṣāmādityavajjñānaṃ prakāśayati tatparam ||

But for those whose ignorance is destroyed by knowledge of the Self, that knowledge, like the sun, lights up the Supreme.

Meaning today and context

Clarity does not have to be built piece by piece; once the cover of confusion is gone, the truth shows itself, as the sun reveals everything at once.

Krishna says for those whose ignorance is destroyed by knowledge of the Self, that knowledge, like the sun, reveals the Supreme.

5.17 Krishna to Arjuna

tadbuddhayastadātmānastanniṣṭhāstatparāyaṇāḥ | gacchantyapunarāvṛttiṃ jñānanirdhūtakalmaṣāḥ ||

Their understanding in That, their self in That, devoted to That, with That as their highest goal, their impurities shaken off by knowledge, they go to the state from which there is no return.

Meaning today and context

When thought, identity and commitment all point the same way, inner change becomes lasting. A divided mind keeps slipping back; a unified one does not.

Krishna describes those whose understanding, self, steadfastness and refuge are in That: their faults washed away by knowledge, they go where there is no return.

5.18 Krishna to Arjuna

vidyāvinayasaṃpanne brāhmaṇe gavi hastini | śuni caiva śvapāke ca paṇḍitāḥ samadarśinaḥ ||

In a brahmin endowed with learning and humility, in a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater, the wise see the same.

This verse teaches equal regard for every being. The old social labels it uses, including 'dog-eater' (shvapaka), reflect the hierarchy of its time and must never be used to rank or demean anyone; the point is that the wise see no such difference in worth.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom shows in how we see others: the same worth and the same inner reality in the most honoured person and the most despised, in humans and animals alike. Status, birth and labels do not change what a being is.

Krishna says the wise see with an equal eye a learned and humble brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater.

5.19 Krishna to Arjuna

ihaiva tairjitaḥ sargo yeṣāṃ sāmye sthitaṃ manaḥ | nirdoṣaṃ hi samaṃ brahma tasmādbrahmaṇi te sthitāḥ ||

Even here, birth is conquered by those whose mind is established in sameness. Brahman is flawless and the same everywhere; therefore they are established in Brahman.

Read with 5.18: equal regard for all. Any language of 'faults' attached to birth reflects its historical setting and must never be used to demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

Freedom is not only for after death. A mind that meets everyone as equal, without ranking or prejudice, is already free here and now.

Krishna says those whose mind rests in sameness have conquered birth here itself, for Brahman is flawless and the same in all; so they are established in Brahman.

5.20 Krishna to Arjuna

na prahṛṣyetpriyaṃ prāpya nodvijetprāpya cāpriyam | sthirabuddhirasaṃmūḍho brahmavidbrahmaṇi sthitaḥ ||

Not rejoicing on getting what is pleasant, not agitated on getting what is unpleasant, steady in understanding and undeluded, the knower of Brahman is established in Brahman.

Meaning today and context

Good news and bad news will both keep coming. Steadiness means not being swept up by the highs or knocked down by the lows, while still feeling and responding to them.

Krishna describes the knower of Brahman: not elated by what is pleasant, not shaken by what is unpleasant, steady and undeluded.

5.21 Krishna to Arjuna

bāhyasparśeṣvasaktātmā vindatyātmani yatsukham | sa brahmayogayuktātmā sukhamakṣayamaśnute ||

One whose self is unattached to outer contacts finds the happiness that is in the Self. With the self joined to Brahman in yoga, he enjoys imperishable happiness.

Meaning today and context

Outer pleasures come and go, and chasing them leaves us restless. There is a quieter happiness inside that doesn't depend on what we get or consume.

Krishna says one unattached to outer sense contacts finds the happiness within, and joined to Brahman in yoga, enjoys unending joy.

5.22 Krishna to Arjuna

The pleasures born of contact are only sources of sorrow. They have a beginning and an end, son of Kunti; the wise do not delight in them.

Meaning today and context

Every sensory high has an end, and chasing the next one often brings emptiness, habit or regret. Enjoy what comes, but don't build your happiness on it.

Krishna warns that pleasures born of sense contact are sources of sorrow, have a beginning and an end, and the wise do not delight in them.

5.23 Krishna to Arjuna

śaknotīhaiva yaḥ soḍhuṃ prākśarīravimokṣaṇāt | kāmakrodhodbhavaṃ vegaṃ sa yuktaḥ sa sukhī naraḥ ||

One who, here itself, before release from the body, is able to withstand the surge born of desire and anger, is disciplined; that person is happy.

Withstanding is not suppressing or denying feelings. If anger or cravings feel unmanageable, reaching out for help is part of self-mastery.

Meaning today and context

Desire and anger will rise as long as we live; the skill is to bear the surge without being carried away by it. That inner strength is a large part of real happiness.

Krishna says the one who can withstand the surge of desire and anger here, before leaving the body, is disciplined and happy.

5.24 Krishna to Arjuna

yo'ntaḥsukho'ntarārāmastathāntarjyotireva yaḥ | sa yogī brahmanirvāṇaṃ brahmabhūto'dhigacchati ||

One whose happiness is within, whose delight is within, whose light is within, that yogi, having become Brahman, attains the peace of Brahman (brahma-nirvana).

Meaning today and context

Joy that depends on others' approval or on things can be taken away. Joy found within, in a settled and clear mind, cannot.

Krishna describes the yogi whose happiness, delight and light are within; having become Brahman, he attains the peace of Brahman.

5.25 Krishna to Arjuna

labhante brahmanirvāṇamṛṣayaḥ kṣīṇakalmaṣāḥ | chinnadvaidhā yatātmānaḥ sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ ||

The seers attain the peace of Brahman: their impurities destroyed, their doubts cut away, self-controlled, delighting in the welfare of all beings.

Meaning today and context

Spiritual depth does not mean turning away from others. The truly free find joy in the good of all, and that care is itself a sign of inner clarity.

Krishna says the seers attain the peace of Brahman: their faults worn away, doubts cut, selves controlled, delighting in the welfare of all beings.

5.26 Krishna to Arjuna

kāmakrodhaviyuktānāṃ yatīnāṃ yatacetasām | abhito brahmanirvāṇaṃ vartate viditātmanām ||

For the disciplined ones freed from desire and anger, whose minds are controlled and who know the Self, the peace of Brahman lies near on all sides.

Meaning today and context

Peace is not far away or in some future life. When desire and anger loosen their hold, it is already close at hand.

Krishna says for disciplined seekers free from desire and anger, with controlled minds, who know the Self, the peace of Brahman is near on every side.

5.27 Krishna to Arjuna

sparśānkṛtvā bahirbāhyāṃścakṣuścaivāntare bhruvoḥ | prāṇāpānau samau kṛtvā nāsābhyantaracāriṇau ||

Shutting out external contacts, fixing the gaze between the eyebrows, making even the in-breath and out-breath that move within the nostrils,

A description of meditation, not medical or breathing-therapy advice. Breath practices are best learnt gently, ideally with a qualified teacher.

Meaning today and context

A simple start to meditation: let outer distractions be, rest the attention, and let the breath become even and calm. Quiet practice gives the mind a place to settle.

Krishna begins a brief description of meditation: shutting out outer contacts, fixing the gaze between the brows, and evening the in- and out-breath.

5.28 Krishna to Arjuna

yatendriyamanobuddhirmunirmokṣaparāyaṇaḥ | vigatecchābhayakrodho yaḥ sadā mukta eva saḥ ||

the sage, with senses, mind and intellect controlled, intent on liberation, from whom desire, fear and anger have gone, is free forever.

Being 'intent on liberation' is not advice to abandon family or responsibilities; the Gita's own preference in this chapter is for disciplined action.

Meaning today and context

Desire, fear and anger are the three great disturbers of the mind. As they fade, freedom is not something you wait for; you are already living it.

Krishna completes the description: the sage with senses, mind and intellect controlled, intent on liberation, free from desire, fear and anger, is forever free.

5.29 Krishna to Arjuna

bhoktāraṃ yajñatapasāṃ sarvalokamaheśvaram | suhṛdaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ jñātvā māṃ śāntimṛcchati ||

Knowing Me as the enjoyer of sacrifices and austerities, the great Lord of all the worlds, and the friend of all beings, one attains peace.

Meaning today and context

Peace comes from knowing you are not alone: whatever good you do is received, and the divine is a friend to every being, including you, asking nothing in return.

Krishna closes the chapter: knowing Him as the enjoyer of sacrifices and austerities, the great Lord of all worlds, and the friend of all beings, one attains peace.
