Chapter 4

4.1 Krishna to Arjuna

imaṃ vivasvate yogaṃ proktavānahamavyayam | vivasvānmanave prāha manurikṣvākave'bravīt ||

I taught this imperishable yoga to Vivasvan; Vivasvan taught it to Manu, and Manu told it to Ikshvaku.

Meaning today and context

The teaching Arjuna is receiving is presented as ancient, not invented for the moment. Wisdom that has been tested and handed down deserves a careful hearing.

Krishna opens chapter 4 by telling Arjuna that he first taught this imperishable yoga to Vivasvan, the sun, who passed it to Manu, who passed it to Ikshvaku.

4.2 Krishna to Arjuna

evaṃ paraṃparāprāptamimaṃ rājarṣayo viduḥ | sa kāleneha mahatā yogo naṣṭaḥ paraṃtapa ||

Received thus in succession, the royal sages knew it. But through long lapse of time here, that yoga was lost, scorcher of foes.

Meaning today and context

Even the best understanding fades when no one lives it and passes it on. What we value needs to be practised and taught again in every generation.

Krishna says the royal sages knew this yoga as it was handed down, but over a long stretch of time it was lost in the world.

4.3 Krishna to Arjuna

sa evāyaṃ mayā te'dya yogaḥ proktaḥ purātanaḥ | bhakto'si me sakhā ceti rahasyaṃ hyetaduttamam ||

That same ancient yoga I have told you today, for you are my devotee and my friend; this is indeed the highest secret.

Meaning today and context

Deep teaching passes most easily where there is trust and affection. Being open, like a friend, makes us able to receive what others cannot.

Krishna tells Arjuna that this same ancient yoga is what he has now taught him, because Arjuna is his devotee and friend.

4.4 Arjuna to Krishna

aparaṃ bhavato janma paraṃ janma vivasvataḥ | kathametadvijānīyāṃ tvamādau proktavāniti ||

Your birth was later; Vivasvan's birth was earlier. How am I to understand that you taught it in the beginning?

Meaning today and context

Arjuna does not simply accept what he hears; he asks honestly when something does not fit. Honest questions are part of learning.

Arjuna is puzzled: Krishna was born recently, Vivasvan long ago, so how could Krishna have taught him at the beginning?

4.5 Krishna to Arjuna

bahūni me vyatītāni janmāni tava cārjuna | tānyahaṃ veda sarvāṇi na tvaṃ vettha paraṃtapa ||

Many births of mine have passed, and of yours, Arjuna. I know them all; you do not know them, scorcher of foes.

Meaning today and context

Our view of our own life is partial. Knowing that there is more than we can see can make us humbler about our certainties.

Krishna answers that both he and Arjuna have passed through many births; Krishna knows them all, Arjuna does not.

4.6 Krishna to Arjuna

ajo'pi sannavyayātmā bhūtānāmīśvaro'pi san | prakṛtiṃ svāmadhiṣṭhāya saṃbhavāmyātmamāyayā ||

Though I am unborn and my self is imperishable, though I am the Lord of all beings, governing my own nature I come into being through my own maya.

Meaning today and context

In the Gita's view, the divine is not trapped by birth the way we are; it appears freely. The verse invites us to see the sacred as present within the world, not only beyond it.

Krishna explains how he takes birth: though unborn, undying and Lord of all beings, he comes into being by governing his own nature through his own power.

4.7 Krishna to Arjuna

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānirbhavati bhārata | abhyutthānamadharmasya tadātmānaṃ sṛjāmyaham ||

Whenever there is a decline of dharma, Bharata, and a rise of adharma, then I bring myself forth.

This verse speaks of the divine restoring order. It is not licence for any person or group to declare others 'adharmic' and punish or harm them. Injustice should be met through lawful, non-violent means.

Meaning today and context

However dark things become, the Gita says goodness is not abandoned; what sustains life rises again. It is a verse of hope in bad times, not a call for anyone to take the law into their own hands.

Krishna says when he takes birth: whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises.

4.8 Krishna to Arjuna

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṃ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām | dharmasaṃsthāpanārthāya saṃbhavāmi yuge yuge ||

For the protection of the good, for the destruction of evildoers, and to firmly establish dharma, I come into being age after age.

'Destroying the wicked' is said of the divine, not of us. It is never licence for any individual, mob or group to punish, attack or harm those they consider wicked. Injustice is to be addressed through law and non-violent means.

Meaning today and context

The verse promises that goodness is protected and harm does not have the last word. For us it is a reason to keep faith and to stand with those who do right, not a reason to appoint ourselves judge of who is evil.

Krishna gives the purpose of his coming: to protect the good, to destroy wrongdoers and to establish dharma, age after age.

4.9 Krishna to Arjuna

janma karma ca me divyamevaṃ yo vetti tattvataḥ | tyaktvā dehaṃ punarjanma naiti māmeti so'rjuna ||

My birth and action are divine. One who knows this in truth, on leaving the body, is not born again; he comes to me, Arjuna.

Meaning today and context

Understanding how the divine can act in the world without being bound by it shows us that we too can act without being trapped by our actions.

Krishna says whoever truly understands his divine birth and action is not born again after leaving the body, but comes to him.

4.10 Krishna to Arjuna

vītarāgabhayakrodhā manmayā māmupāśritāḥ | bahavo jñānatapasā pūtā madbhāvamāgatāḥ ||

Free from passion, fear and anger, absorbed in me, taking refuge in me, many, purified by the austerity of knowledge, have come to my state of being.

Meaning today and context

Craving, fear and anger are the three great disturbances of the mind. As they fade through understanding, a person becomes clear, and many before us have walked this way.

Krishna says many, free from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in him and purified by the austerity of knowledge, have reached his state.

4.11 Krishna to Arjuna

ye yathā māṃ prapadyante tāṃstathaiva bhajāmyaham | mama vartmānuvartante manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ ||

In whatever way people approach me, in that same way I receive them. In every way, Partha, people follow my path.

Meaning today and context

What we seek shapes what we receive. Different people come to the sacred in different ways, and none of those ways is shut out.

Krishna says he responds to people in the very way they approach him; everywhere, people follow his path.

4.12 Krishna to Arjuna

kāṅkṣantaḥ karmaṇāṃ siddhiṃ yajanta iha devatāḥ | kṣipraṃ hi mānuṣe loke siddhirbhavati karmajā ||

Longing for success in their actions, people here worship the gods, for in the human world success born of action comes quickly.

Meaning today and context

Most of us pray and work for quick, visible results, and often we get them. The Gita does not condemn this, but it points out that such success is not the same as lasting freedom.

Krishna observes that those who want success in their works worship the gods here, because success born of action comes quickly in the human world.

4.13 Krishna to Arjuna

cāturvarṇyaṃ mayā sṛṣṭaṃ guṇakarmavibhāgaśaḥ | tasya kartāramapi māṃ viddhyakartāramavyayam ||

The fourfold order was created by me according to the division of qualities and work. Though I am its maker, know me as the non-doer, the changeless.

This verse speaks of qualities (guna) and work (karma), never of birth. It must never be used to justify caste by birth, untouchability, exclusion or treating anyone as lower. Every person has equal dignity.

Meaning today and context

People differ in temperament and in the kind of work that suits them, and a society needs all of it. The verse speaks of qualities and work, not of birth or rank, and no one's worth depends on it.

Krishna says the fourfold order was created by him according to the division of qualities and work; yet, though its author, he is a non-doer and changeless.

4.14 Krishna to Arjuna

Actions do not taint me, nor do I long for the fruit of action. One who knows me thus is not bound by actions.

Meaning today and context

What binds us is not action itself but the sense of 'I did it' and the hunger for what it will bring. Without these, even a busy life can be light.

Krishna says actions do not stain him and he has no longing for their fruit; whoever knows him this way is not bound by actions.

4.15 Krishna to Arjuna

evaṃ jñātvā kṛtaṃ karma pūrvairapi mumukṣubhiḥ | kuru karmaiva tasmāttvaṃ pūrvaiḥ pūrvataraṃ kṛtam ||

Knowing this, the seekers of liberation of old also performed action. Therefore you too should do action, as the ancients did long ago.

Meaning today and context

Understanding does not mean dropping out of life. People who sought freedom before us kept doing their work, and so can we.

Krishna tells Arjuna that seekers of freedom in the past acted with this understanding, so he too should act, as the ancients did.

4.16 Krishna to Arjuna

kiṃ karma kimakarmeti kavayo'pyatra mohitāḥ | tatte karma pravakṣyāmi yajjñātvā mokṣyase'śubhāt ||

What is action, what is inaction? Even the wise are bewildered here. I will explain to you that action, knowing which you will be freed from evil.

Meaning today and context

Knowing when to act and when to hold back is genuinely hard, even for thoughtful people. Being confused about it is not a failing; it is the start of real inquiry.

Krishna admits that even the wise are confused about what is action and what is inaction, and promises to explain it.

4.17 Krishna to Arjuna

karmaṇo hyapi boddhavyaṃ boddhavyaṃ ca vikarmaṇaḥ | akarmaṇaśca boddhavyaṃ gahanā karmaṇo gatiḥ ||

One must understand what action is, understand what wrong action is, and understand what inaction is; deep is the way of action.

Meaning today and context

Doing, doing wrong and not doing all have consequences. Before deciding, it helps to look honestly at all three.

Krishna says one must understand action, wrong action and inaction, for the way of action is deep.

4.18 Krishna to Arjuna

karmaṇyakarma yaḥ paśyedakarmaṇi ca karma yaḥ | sa buddhimānmanuṣyeṣu sa yuktaḥ kṛtsnakarmakṛt ||

One who sees inaction in action and action in inaction is wise among people; he is disciplined and does all that is to be done.

Meaning today and context

A person can be very active and inwardly still, or sitting idle and inwardly busy with ego. What matters is not how much we do but who we think is doing it.

Krishna gives the key teaching of the chapter: the one who sees inaction in action and action in inaction is wise and truly integrated.

4.19 Krishna to Arjuna

yasya sarve samārambhāḥ kāmasaṃkalpavarjitāḥ | jñānāgnidagdhakarmāṇaṃ tamāhuḥ paṇḍitaṃ budhāḥ ||

One whose every undertaking is free from desire and its willful intent, whose actions are burnt up in the fire of knowledge, the wise call a pandita.

Meaning today and context

True learning is not degrees or information but freedom from the inner push of 'I want'. Work done from that freedom leaves no residue of anxiety behind it.

Krishna says one whose undertakings are free of desire and self-centred intention, whose actions are burnt in the fire of knowledge, is called wise by the learned.

4.20 Krishna to Arjuna

tyaktvā karmaphalāsaṅgaṃ nityatṛpto nirāśrayaḥ | karmaṇyabhipravṛtto'pi naiva kiṃ citkaroti saḥ ||

Giving up attachment to the fruit of action, ever content, depending on nothing, though fully engaged in action, he does nothing at all.

Meaning today and context

Contentment does not mean doing less. A person who doesn't lean on results for their happiness can work fully and still be at rest inside.

Krishna says one who has given up attachment to the fruit, ever content and dependent on nothing, does nothing at all even while fully engaged in action.

4.21 Krishna to Arjuna

nirāśīryatacittātmā tyaktasarvaparigrahaḥ | śārīraṃ kevalaṃ karma kurvannāpnoti kilbiṣam ||

Without expectation, with mind and self restrained, having given up all sense of possession, doing merely bodily action, he incurs no fault.

This describes the inner freedom of a renunciant. It is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities, or to give away what others depend on.

Meaning today and context

Much of our inner trouble comes from expectations and the urge to own and control. Letting go of these lightens even ordinary daily work.

Krishna says one without expectations, with mind and body restrained, having given up all possessiveness, doing only bodily action, incurs no sin.

4.22 Krishna to Arjuna

yadṛcchālābhasaṃtuṣṭo dvaṃdvātīto vimatsaraḥ | samaḥ siddhāvasiddhau ca kṛtvāpi na nibadhyate ||

Content with whatever comes by itself, beyond the pairs of opposites, free from envy, even in success and failure, though he acts he is not bound.

Meaning today and context

Comparing ourselves with others and swinging between success and failure keeps us restless. Being content with what comes and free from envy brings steadiness.

Krishna describes the free person: content with what comes unasked, beyond the pairs of opposites, without envy, even in success and failure; though acting, he is not bound.

4.23 Krishna to Arjuna

gatasaṅgasya muktasya jñānāvasthitacetasaḥ | yajñāyācarataḥ karma samagraṃ pravilīyate ||

For one whose attachment is gone, who is free, whose mind is established in knowledge, who acts for the sake of sacrifice, the whole of action melts away.

Meaning today and context

When work is done as an offering rather than for ourselves, it stops piling up as burden and worry. It is done, and it is let go.

Krishna says for one free from attachment, liberated, with mind fixed in knowledge, acting only as an offering, all action dissolves.

4.24 Krishna to Arjuna

brahmārpaṇaṃ brahmahavirbrahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam | brahmaiva tena gantavyaṃ brahmakarmasamādhinā ||

The offering is Brahman, the oblation is Brahman, poured by Brahman into the fire that is Brahman. Brahman alone is reached by one absorbed in Brahman in action.

Meaning today and context

When everything in an act, the doer, the means and the goal, is seen as one sacred whole, ordinary work becomes worship. Many families say this verse before meals in that spirit.

Krishna gives the famous verse on seeing Brahman in every part of the act of offering.

4.25 Krishna to Arjuna

daivamevāpare yajñaṃ yoginaḥ paryupāsate | brahmāgnāvapare yajñaṃ yajñenaivopajuhvati ||

Some yogis perform sacrifice to the gods alone; others offer sacrifice by sacrifice itself into the fire of Brahman.

Meaning today and context

There are many ways to offer one's life, from outward worship to inner inquiry. The Gita respects them all while pointing to the inward one as deepest.

Krishna begins listing the many forms of sacrifice: some yogis offer sacrifice to the gods, others offer the self as sacrifice into the fire of Brahman.

4.26 Krishna to Arjuna

śrotrādīnīndriyāṇyanye saṃyamāgniṣu juhvati | śabdādīnviṣayānanya indriyāgniṣu juhvati ||

Some offer hearing and the other senses into the fires of restraint; others offer sound and the other objects into the fires of the senses.

Meaning today and context

Restraint is one path; another is to take in the world through the senses in a clean, unforbidden way, as an offering. Both can be disciplined practice.

Krishna continues: some offer the senses into the fires of restraint, others offer sense objects into the fires of the senses.

4.27 Krishna to Arjuna

sarvāṇīndriyakarmāṇi prāṇakarmāṇi cāpare | ātmasaṃyamayogāgnau juhvati jñānadīpite ||

Others offer all the actions of the senses and the actions of the life-breath into the yogic fire of self-restraint, kindled by knowledge.

Meaning today and context

Gathering scattered attention back into oneself, lit by understanding, is itself a sacred act. This is what meditation aims at.

Krishna continues: others offer all the actions of the senses and of the life-breath into the yogic fire of self-control, kindled by knowledge.

4.28 Krishna to Arjuna

dravyayajñāstapoyajñā yogayajñāstathāpare | svādhyāyajñānayajñāśca yatayaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ ||

Others offer wealth as sacrifice, austerity as sacrifice, yoga as sacrifice; and ascetics of strict vows offer study and knowledge as sacrifice.

Meaning today and context

Giving money, disciplined effort, practice and serious study can all be offerings. Each person can find the form that fits them.

Krishna lists further sacrifices: of wealth, of austerity, of yoga, of study and knowledge, undertaken by striving people with firm vows.

4.29 Krishna to Arjuna

apāne juhvati prāṇaṃ prāṇe'pānaṃ tathāpare | prāṇāpānagatī ruddhvā prāṇāyāmaparāyaṇāḥ ||

Others offer the in-breath into the out-breath and the out-breath into the in-breath; restraining the flow of both, they are devoted to breath-control.

This describes a practice, not instructions. Breath-retention should be learnt from a qualified teacher; people with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions, or in pregnancy, should consult a doctor first.

Meaning today and context

Working with the breath is one of the oldest ways of calming and focusing the mind. Here it is counted as a form of offering.

Krishna describes those devoted to breath-control, who offer the in-breath into the out-breath and the out-breath into the in-breath, and hold both.

4.30 Krishna to Arjuna

apare niyatāhārāḥ prāṇānprāṇeṣu juhvati | sarve'pyete yajñavido yajñakṣapitakalmaṣāḥ ||

Others, regulating their food, offer the life-breaths into the life-breaths. All of these know sacrifice, and their impurities are destroyed by sacrifice.

'Regulated food' means moderation, not fasting. This is not dietary or medical advice; anyone with an eating disorder, diabetes or other health condition should follow medical guidance.

Meaning today and context

Moderation in food is listed among disciplines that steady the mind. Whatever the form, sincere practice purifies.

Krishna mentions those who regulate their food and offer the life-breaths into the life-breaths, and says all these know sacrifice and are cleansed by it.

4.31 Krishna to Arjuna

yajñaśiṣṭāmṛtabhujo yānti brahma sanātanam | nāyaṃ loko'styayajñasya kuto'nyaḥ kurusattama ||

Eating the nectar that remains after sacrifice, they reach eternal Brahman. This world is not for one who makes no sacrifice; how then the other, best of the Kurus?

Meaning today and context

A life that only takes and never gives cannot thrive, even in worldly terms. What we enjoy after first offering something tastes like nectar.

Krishna says those who eat the nectar left over from sacrifice reach eternal Brahman; not even this world belongs to one who offers no sacrifice, let alone the next.

4.32 Krishna to Arjuna

evaṃ bahuvidhā yajñā vitatā brahmaṇo mukhe | karmajānviddhi tānsarvānevaṃ jñātvā vimokṣyase ||

Thus many kinds of sacrifice are spread out at the mouth of Brahman. Know them all as born of action; knowing this, you will be set free.

Meaning today and context

All practices, however varied, are activities of body, speech and mind. Seeing that the Self underneath is not the doer is what frees us.

Krishna sums up: many kinds of sacrifice are spread out in the Veda; know them all to be born of action, and knowing this you will be freed.

4.33 Krishna to Arjuna

śreyāndravyamayādyajñājjñānayajñaḥ paraṃtapa | sarvaṃ karmākhilaṃ pārtha jñāne parisamāpyate ||

Better than sacrifice of material things is the sacrifice of knowledge, scorcher of foes. All action without exception, Partha, finds its completion in knowledge.

Meaning today and context

Outward offerings have their place, but understanding is the fulfilment of all effort. Learning to see clearly is the highest thing we can give ourselves to.

Krishna declares that the sacrifice of knowledge is better than sacrifice of material things, for all action culminates in knowledge.

4.34 Krishna to Arjuna

tadviddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā | upadekṣyanti te jñānaṃ jñāninastattvadarśinaḥ ||

Learn it by humble approach, by sincere questioning and by service. Those who know, who have seen the truth, will teach you that knowledge.

Humility is not blind obedience. Check a teacher's integrity and conduct over time; questioning is part of the verse itself. Never surrender your judgement, money or body to anyone who abuses, exploits or isolates you; that is not a guru. If you face abuse, seek help from people you trust or the authorities.

Meaning today and context

Deep understanding is rarely gained alone. Find someone who truly lives what they teach, approach with humility, keep asking real questions, and contribute in return.

Krishna tells Arjuna how to gain this knowledge: by approaching those who have seen the truth, with humility, questioning and service.

4.35 Krishna to Arjuna

yajjñātvā na punarmohamevaṃ yāsyasi pāṇḍava | yena bhūtānyaśeṣeṇa drakṣyasyātmanyatho mayi ||

Knowing that, Pandava, you will not again fall into delusion like this; by it you will see all beings without exception in yourself, and then in me.

Meaning today and context

Real understanding does not wear off the way a mood does. Seeing all beings as part of oneself dissolves the confusion that comes from feeling separate.

Krishna says that once Arjuna knows this, he will not fall into such delusion again, and will see all beings in himself and in Krishna.

4.36 Krishna to Arjuna

api cedasi pāpebhyaḥ sarvebhyaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ | sarvaṃ jñānaplavenaiva vṛjinaṃ saṃtariṣyasi ||

Even if you were the worst of all sinners, you would cross over all wrongdoing by the raft of knowledge alone.

Inner freedom does not cancel duties to people we have harmed. Where possible, make amends and accept lawful consequences. If guilt feels unbearable, talk to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

No past is so dark that it cannot be crossed. The Gita says understanding can carry anyone beyond what they have done, and it shuts no one out.

Krishna assures Arjuna that even the worst of wrongdoers can cross all sin by the raft of knowledge.

4.37 Krishna to Arjuna

yathaidhāṃsi samiddho'gnirbhasmasātkurute'rjuna | jñānāgniḥ sarvakarmāṇi bhasmasātkurute tathā ||

As a blazing fire turns firewood to ashes, Arjuna, so the fire of knowledge turns all actions to ashes.

Meaning today and context

The weight of old habits and past deeds can feel permanent. Clear understanding takes away their power to drive us, the way fire leaves wood unable to burn again.

Krishna compares knowledge to a blazing fire that reduces fuel to ashes; so the fire of knowledge burns all actions.

4.38 Krishna to Arjuna

na hi jñānena sadṛśaṃ pavitramiha vidyate | tatsvayaṃ yogasaṃsiddhaḥ kālenātmani vindati ||

Truly there is nothing in this world as purifying as knowledge. One perfected in yoga finds it, in time, within oneself.

Meaning today and context

Understanding cannot be rushed or bought; it ripens with steady practice and is found within, not handed over from outside. Patience is part of the path.

Krishna says nothing in this world purifies like knowledge; one perfected in yoga finds it in himself in time.

4.39 Krishna to Arjuna

śraddhāvāṃllabhate jñānaṃ tatparaḥ saṃyatendriyaḥ | jñānaṃ labdhvā parāṃ śāntimacireṇādhigacchati ||

One who has faith, who is devoted to it and has mastered the senses, gains knowledge; having gained knowledge, one soon reaches supreme peace.

Meaning today and context

Trust, steady commitment and self-control together make learning possible, in study, work or inner life. The reward is a peace that does not depend on circumstances.

Krishna names the qualities that bring knowledge: faith, dedication and mastery of the senses; with knowledge comes supreme peace quickly.

4.40 Krishna to Arjuna

ajñaścāśraddadhānaśca saṃśayātmā vinaśyati | nāyaṃ loko'sti na paro na sukhaṃ saṃśayātmanaḥ ||

The ignorant, the faithless and the one whose self is full of doubt perish. For the doubting self there is neither this world nor the next, nor happiness.

This is not a condemnation of honest questioning, which the Gita itself invites (4.34), nor of people with anxiety or obsessive doubts, which are health conditions that deserve care and support.

Meaning today and context

Endless second-guessing can freeze a person and drain every joy. Honest questions are healthy, but at some point we must trust what we have understood and act.

Krishna warns that the ignorant, the faithless and above all the doubting person perish; for the doubter there is neither this world nor the next, nor happiness.

4.41 Krishna to Arjuna

yogasaṃnyastakarmāṇaṃ jñānasaṃchinnasaṃśayam | ātmavantaṃ na karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanaṃjaya ||

Actions do not bind one who has renounced action through yoga, whose doubt is cut away by knowledge, who is self-possessed, Dhananjaya.

Meaning today and context

When doubt is resolved and we are inwardly collected, we can act fully without being tied in knots by what we do.

Krishna says actions do not bind one who has renounced action through yoga, whose doubt is cut by knowledge, and who is self-possessed.

4.42 Krishna to Arjuna

tasmādajñānasaṃbhūtaṃ hṛtsthaṃ jñānāsinātmanaḥ | chittvainaṃ saṃśayaṃ yogamātiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhārata ||

Therefore, cutting with the sword of knowledge this doubt in your heart, born of ignorance, resort to yoga. Arise, Bharata!

'Arise' is Krishna's call to Arjuna on a battlefield. It is never a justification for violence or for harming anyone; for us it means overcoming paralysis to do our rightful duty.

Meaning today and context

Doubt born of confusion has to be cut by our own clear understanding; no one can do it for us. Then comes the call to get up and do what is in front of us.

Krishna closes the chapter: cut the doubt in your heart, born of ignorance, with the sword of knowledge; take to yoga and stand up.
