Chapter 3

3.1 Arjuna to Krishna

jyāyasī cetkarmaṇaste matā buddhirjanārdana | tatkiṃ karmaṇi ghore māṃ niyojayasi keśava ||

Arjuna said: If you hold that understanding is better than action, Janardana, then why do you push me into this terrible deed, Keshava?

Meaning today and context

Arjuna voices a question many of us have: if inner clarity matters most, why not step back from hard, messy work altogether? The rest of the chapter answers it.

Chapter 3 opens with Arjuna puzzled: if Krishna holds understanding higher than action, why is he urging Arjuna into this terrible action?

3.2 Arjuna to Krishna

vyāmiśreṇaiva vākyena buddhiṃ mohayasīva me | tadekaṃ vada niścitya yena śreyo'hamāpnuyām ||

With words that seem mixed, you only seem to confuse my understanding. Tell me for certain the one thing by which I may attain the highest good.

Meaning today and context

When advice seems to point in two directions, it is fair to ask for one clear next step. Asking honestly for clarity is part of learning.

Arjuna continues: Krishna's words seem mixed and confuse him; he asks for one clear path by which he may reach the highest good.

3.3 Krishna to Arjuna

loke'smindvividhā niṣṭhā purā proktā mayānagha | jñānayogena sāṃkhyānāṃ karmayogena yoginām ||

The Blessed Lord said: In this world a twofold path was taught by me long ago, sinless one: the yoga of knowledge for the Sankhyas, and the yoga of action for the yogis.

Meaning today and context

There is more than one valid way to live a meaningful life. Some are drawn to reflection, others to engaged action; both are recognised paths.

Krishna replies that he long ago taught two kinds of commitment in this world: the path of knowledge for the contemplative and the path of action for those who act.

3.4 Krishna to Arjuna

na karmaṇāmanārambhānnaiṣkarmyaṃ puruṣo'śnute | na ca saṃnyasanādeva siddhiṃ samadhigacchati ||

A person does not reach freedom from action by not starting actions, nor does one attain perfection merely by renouncing.

Meaning today and context

Avoiding responsibility is not the same as being free of it. Inner freedom is reached by acting well, not by simply walking away.

Krishna says freedom from action is not won by refusing to act, nor is perfection reached by renunciation alone.

3.5 Krishna to Arjuna

na hi kaścitkṣaṇamapi jātu tiṣṭhatyakarmakṛt | kāryate hyavaśaḥ karma sarvaḥ prakṛtijairguṇaiḥ ||

No one can remain even for a moment without acting. Everyone is made to act, helplessly, by the qualities born of nature.

Meaning today and context

Even doing nothing is a choice with effects. Since we will act anyway, the real question is how and in what spirit we act.

Krishna explains why inaction is impossible: no one can stay even a moment without acting, because nature's qualities drive everyone.

3.6 Krishna to Arjuna

karmendriyāṇi saṃyamya ya āste manasā smaran | indriyārthānvimūḍhātmā mithyācāraḥ sa ucyate ||

One who restrains the organs of action but sits dwelling in the mind on the objects of the senses is deluded and is called a hypocrite.

The verse criticises pretence, not struggle. Someone honestly fighting a craving or unwanted thoughts is not a hypocrite; seek support rather than shame.

Meaning today and context

Looking disciplined on the outside while feeding a craving inside doesn't work and isn't honest. Real change has to reach the mind, not just the behaviour.

Krishna warns against outward restraint without inner change: one who holds back the body but keeps dwelling on sense objects in the mind is deluded and a pretender.

3.7 Krishna to Arjuna

yastvindriyāṇi manasā niyamyārabhate'rjuna | karmendriyaiḥ karmayogamasaktaḥ sa viśiṣyate ||

But one who controls the senses with the mind, Arjuna, and without attachment undertakes the yoga of action with the organs of action, that person excels.

Meaning today and context

The better path is not to freeze but to act, with the mind in charge and without clinging to outcomes. Engaged, steady work is itself a discipline.

Krishna contrasts the pretender with the better way: control the senses with the mind and engage in action without attachment.

3.8 Krishna to Arjuna

Do your prescribed work, for action is better than inaction. Without action, even the maintenance of your body would not be possible.

Meaning today and context

When you feel stuck, doing the work in front of you is better than doing nothing. Even basic living depends on action; start with what is yours to do.

Krishna tells Arjuna to do his prescribed work, since action is better than inaction; without action even the body cannot be maintained.

3.9 Krishna to Arjuna

yajñārthātkarmaṇo'nyatra loko'yaṃ karmabandhanaḥ | tadarthaṃ karma kaunteya muktasaṅgaḥ samācara ||

This world is bound by action, except for action done as an offering. For that purpose, son of Kunti, perform action, free from attachment.

Meaning today and context

Work done only for ourselves tends to tie us up in worry and wanting. Work done as an offering, to something larger than ourselves, frees us.

Krishna says action binds except when it is done as an offering (yajna); so act for that purpose, free from attachment.

3.10 Krishna to Arjuna

sahayajñāḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭvā purovāca prajāpatiḥ | anena prasaviṣyadhvameṣa vo'stviṣṭakāmadhuk ||

In the beginning, Prajapati created beings together with sacrifice and said: 'By this you shall multiply; let this be your cow of plenty, yielding what you desire.'

Shankara reads 'beings' here as the three varnas of his time. For today, read sacrifice (yajna) as everyone's contribution to the shared good; never use this verse to rank people by birth.

Meaning today and context

Life was set up as give and take. Contributing, not only consuming, is woven into how people and communities flourish.

Krishna recalls the creation story: Prajapati created beings together with sacrifice and said that by it they would prosper.

3.11 Krishna to Arjuna

devānbhāvayatānena te devā bhāvayantu vaḥ | parasparaṃ bhāvayantaḥ śreyaḥ paramavāpsyatha ||

Nourish the gods with this, and let the gods nourish you. Nourishing one another, you will attain the highest good.

Meaning today and context

Wellbeing grows through mutual care: between people, and between people and the world that sustains them. When each side gives, both flourish.

Krishna continues Prajapati's words: nourish the gods with sacrifice and they will nourish you; nourishing each other, you will reach the highest good.

3.12 Krishna to Arjuna

iṣṭānbhogānhi vo devā dāsyante yajñabhāvitāḥ | tairdattānapradāyaibhyo yo bhuṅkte stena eva saḥ ||

Nourished by sacrifice, the gods will give you the enjoyments you desire. One who enjoys what they give without offering anything to them is a thief.

Meaning today and context

Everything we enjoy comes from others: nature, family, society. Taking without ever giving back is a quiet kind of theft.

Krishna says the gods, honoured by sacrifice, give people what they enjoy; one who enjoys these gifts without giving back is a thief.

3.13 Krishna to Arjuna

yajñaśiṣṭāśinaḥ santo mucyante sarvakilbiṣaiḥ | bhuñjate te tvaghaṃ pāpā ye pacantyātmakāraṇāt ||

The good, who eat what remains of the sacrifice, are freed from all faults. But the wicked who cook only for their own sake eat sin.

Meaning today and context

Sharing first and taking afterwards purifies the way we live. A life organised only around 'me' slowly poisons itself.

Krishna says the good who eat what remains after the offering are freed from all faults, while those who cook only for themselves eat sin.

3.14 Krishna to Arjuna

annādbhavanti bhūtāni parjanyādannasaṃbhavaḥ | yajñādbhavati parjanyo yajñaḥ karmasamudbhavaḥ ||

Beings come from food; food is born of rain; rain comes from sacrifice; and sacrifice is born of action.

Meaning today and context

Our lives depend on a web of cycles we didn't make. Seeing this interdependence makes gratitude and responsibility feel natural.

Krishna describes the cycle that sustains life: beings come from food, food from rain, rain from sacrifice, and sacrifice from action.

3.15 Krishna to Arjuna

karma brahmodbhavaṃ viddhi brahmākṣarasamudbhavam | tasmātsarvagataṃ brahma nityaṃ yajñe pratiṣṭhitam ||

Know that action arises from Brahman, and Brahman arises from the Imperishable. Therefore the all-pervading Brahman is always established in sacrifice.

Meaning today and context

Right action has deep roots. When we work in the spirit of offering, we are connected to something that holds the whole of life together.

Krishna traces action back to Brahman, which arises from the Imperishable; therefore the all-pervading Brahman is ever established in sacrifice.

3.16 Krishna to Arjuna

evaṃ pravartitaṃ cakraṃ nānuvartayatīha yaḥ | aghāyurindriyārāmo moghaṃ pārtha sa jīvati ||

One who does not keep turning the wheel thus set in motion, but lives in wrongdoing, delighting in the senses, lives in vain, Partha.

Meaning today and context

A life spent only on pleasure, contributing nothing back, feels empty in the end. Meaning comes from taking part in the larger cycle of giving.

Krishna says one who does not keep this wheel turning, living only for sense pleasure, lives in vain.

3.17 Krishna to Arjuna

yastvātmaratireva syādātmatṛptaśca mānavaḥ | ātmanyeva ca saṃtuṣṭastasya kāryaṃ na vidyate ||

But for the person who delights only in the Self, is satisfied in the Self, and is content in the Self alone, there is nothing that needs to be done.

Meaning today and context

Most of our activity is driven by lack. A person who is truly whole within no longer acts from need, though such fullness is rare and deep.

Krishna names the exception: for one who delights only in the Self and is fully content in the Self, there is nothing left that must be done.

3.18 Krishna to Arjuna

naiva tasya kṛtenārtho nākṛteneha kaścana | na cāsya sarvabhūteṣu kaścidarthavyapāśrayaḥ ||

For that person there is no purpose here in what is done, nor any in what is not done; nor does such a one depend on any being for any purpose.

Meaning today and context

Inner freedom means not needing anyone or anything to complete us. That independence is the opposite of using people.

Krishna continues: such a person has nothing to gain by acting or lose by not acting, and depends on no being for any purpose.

3.19 Krishna to Arjuna

tasmādasaktaḥ satataṃ kāryaṃ karma samācara | asakto hyācarankarma paramāpnoti pūruṣaḥ ||

Therefore, always perform the work that has to be done, without attachment. For by performing action without attachment, a person attains the highest.

Meaning today and context

Do what needs doing, fully, without gripping the outcome. That combination of commitment and letting go is the path itself, not a step before it.

Krishna draws the conclusion for Arjuna: always do the work that must be done, without attachment, for by acting unattached one reaches the highest.

3.20 Krishna to Arjuna

karmaṇaiva hi saṃsiddhimāsthitā janakādayaḥ | lokasaṃgrahamevāpi saṃpaśyankartumarhasi ||

Janaka and others attained perfection through action alone. Even with a view to holding the world together, you should act.

Meaning today and context

Even if you need nothing for yourself, others are watching and depend on you. Acting well keeps the world around you steady and sets a good direction.

Krishna gives the example of King Janaka and others who reached perfection through action, and asks Arjuna to act with the welfare of the world in view.

3.21 Krishna to Arjuna

yadyadācarati śreṣṭhastattadevetaro janaḥ | sa yatpramāṇaṃ kurute lokastadanuvartate ||

Whatever the best person does, other people do the same. Whatever standard that person sets, the world follows it.

Meaning today and context

Parents, teachers, managers and public figures teach more by what they do than by what they say. If others look up to you, your conduct sets their standard.

Krishna explains why example matters: whatever the best person does, others follow; whatever standard they set, the world goes by.

3.22 Krishna to Arjuna

na me pārthāsti kartavyaṃ triṣu lokeṣu kiṃ cana | nānavāptamavāptavyaṃ varta eva ca karmaṇi ||

For me, Partha, there is nothing at all to be done in the three worlds, nothing unattained to be attained; yet I continue in action.

Meaning today and context

Working when you need nothing from it shows that action can come from care rather than need. Those who have 'made it' still have a reason to keep contributing.

Krishna points to himself: there is nothing in the three worlds he must do or has yet to gain, yet he continues to act.

3.23 Krishna to Arjuna

yadi hyahaṃ na varteyaṃ jātu karmaṇyatandritaḥ | mama vartmānuvartante manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ ||

For if I did not tirelessly engage in action, Partha, people would follow my path in every way.

Meaning today and context

When someone people trust becomes careless or idle, others take it as permission to do the same. Influence brings responsibility.

Krishna explains: if he ever stopped acting tirelessly, people everywhere would follow his path.

3.24 Krishna to Arjuna

utsīdeyurime lokā na kuryāṃ karma cedaham | saṃkarasya ca kartā syāmupahanyāmimāḥ prajāḥ ||

If I did not act, these worlds would perish. I would be the cause of confusion and would destroy these beings.

'Samkara' (mixing, confusion) is traditionally read as the mixing of social orders. Read it here as social disorder; never as support for caste purity or exclusion by birth.

Meaning today and context

The order we rely on is kept up by people doing their part. When those responsible stop, disorder follows and the vulnerable suffer first.

Krishna continues: if he did not act, the worlds would fall into ruin, he would cause confusion and harm to beings.

3.25 Krishna to Arjuna

saktāḥ karmaṇyavidvāṃso yathā kurvanti bhārata | kuryādvidvāṃstathāsaktaścikīrṣurlokasaṃgraham ||

As the unwise act attached to their action, Bharata, so should the wise act, but unattached, wishing to hold the world together.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom doesn't mean working less hard. It means working just as fully, but for the good of others rather than for personal gain.

Krishna says the wise should act as diligently as the ignorant do, but without attachment, wishing to hold the world together.

3.26 Krishna to Arjuna

na buddhibhedaṃ janayedajñānāṃ karmasaṅginām | joṣayetsarvakarmāṇi vidvānyuktaḥ samācaran ||

The wise should not unsettle the understanding of the ignorant who are attached to action. Acting with discipline themselves, they should encourage others in all actions.

Meaning today and context

Don't knock away someone's motivation by lecturing them on higher truths they aren't ready for. Show the way by your own example and meet people where they are.

Krishna advises the wise not to unsettle the minds of those attached to action, but to engage them in action by acting well themselves.

3.27 Krishna to Arjuna

prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ | ahaṃkāravimūḍhātmā kartāhamiti manyate ||

All actions are performed in every way by the qualities of nature. But one whose mind is deluded by ego thinks, 'I am the doer.'

Not a denial of personal responsibility. We are still accountable for what we do to others.

Meaning today and context

Much of what happens through us is shaped by forces beyond our control. Holding 'I did it all' too tightly breeds both pride in success and crushing guilt in failure.

Krishna says all actions are done by the qualities of nature, but one deluded by ego thinks 'I am the doer'.

3.28 Krishna to Arjuna

tattvavittu mahābāho guṇakarmavibhāgayoḥ | guṇā guṇeṣu vartanta iti matvā na sajjate ||

But the one who knows the truth about the divisions of qualities and actions, mighty-armed one, understanding that the qualities move among the qualities, does not become attached.

Meaning today and context

Seeing your reactions and habits as patterns in nature, rather than as 'who I am', gives a little distance. From there it is easier not to get hooked.

Krishna says the one who knows the truth about the qualities and their actions sees that qualities move among qualities, and so is not attached.

3.29 Krishna to Arjuna

prakṛterguṇasaṃmūḍhāḥ sajjante guṇakarmasu | tānakṛtsnavido mandānkṛtsnavinna vicālayet ||

Those deluded by the qualities of nature become attached to the actions of the qualities. The one who knows the whole should not unsettle these dull people of partial knowledge.

Meaning today and context

Knowing more doesn't give us the right to shake other people's footing. Patience with those who see only part of the picture is itself wisdom.

Krishna says those deluded by nature's qualities are attached to their workings; the one who knows the whole should not unsettle those who know only in part.

3.30 Krishna to Arjuna

mayi sarvāṇi karmāṇi saṃnyasyādhyātmacetasā | nirāśīrnirmamo bhūtvā yudhyasva vigatajvaraḥ ||

Surrendering all actions to me, with your mind on the Self, free from hope and from the sense of 'mine', fight, with your fever gone.

'Fight' refers to Arjuna's duty on the battlefield. It is never a justification for violence; today read it as facing one's rightful responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

When a hard task is unavoidable, offer it to something higher, drop the 'what's in it for me', and do it without inner turmoil. Surrender here is the end of anxiety, not of effort.

Krishna tells Arjuna to surrender all actions to him with the mind on the Self, and fight free from hope, possessiveness and inner fever.

3.31 Krishna to Arjuna

ye me matamidaṃ nityamanutiṣṭhanti mānavāḥ | śraddhāvanto'nasūyanto mucyante te'pi karmabhiḥ ||

Those who always follow this teaching of mine with faith and without finding fault are also released from the bonds of action.

Meaning today and context

You don't have to be perfect to benefit. Steady practice, trust and an open rather than cynical attitude are enough to begin freeing yourself.

Krishna says those who constantly follow this teaching with faith and without finding fault are released from the bondage of action.

3.32 Krishna to Arjuna

ye tvetadabhyasūyanto nānutiṣṭhanti me matam | sarvajñānavimūḍhāṃstānviddhi naṣṭānacetasaḥ ||

But those who resent this teaching of mine and do not follow it, know them to be deluded in all knowledge, lost and without discernment.

Honest questioning is welcome in the Gita itself; Arjuna questions throughout. The verse targets scornful rejection, not doubt or enquiry.

Meaning today and context

A mind that only looks for faults closes itself to learning. Cynicism can feel clever while quietly cutting us off from what could help.

Krishna says those who resent and reject this teaching are confused about all knowledge, lost and without discernment.

3.33 Krishna to Arjuna

sadṛśaṃ ceṣṭate svasyāḥ prakṛterjñānavānapi | prakṛtiṃ yānti bhūtāni nigrahaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati ||

Even a wise person acts in keeping with their own nature. Beings follow their nature; what will suppression accomplish?

Not a reason to give up on harmful habits or to excuse harm. Verse 3.34 says one must not fall under the sway of likes and dislikes; seek help for addiction.

Meaning today and context

Our deep tendencies don't vanish by force. Change works better when we understand our nature and work with it wisely, as the next verse explains.

Krishna observes that everyone, even the wise, acts according to their own nature; beings follow their nature, so what can mere suppression do?

3.34 Krishna to Arjuna

indriyasyendriyasyārthe rāgadveṣau vyavasthitau | tayorna vaśamāgacchettau hyasya paripanthinau ||

Attraction and aversion are set in each sense toward its objects. One should not come under their power, for they are one's enemies on the road.

Meaning today and context

Likes and dislikes will always arise; that's normal. The work is to notice them and not let them make your decisions, at work, at home or in your habits.

Krishna says attraction and aversion are fixed in every sense toward its objects; one should not come under their control, for they are one's enemies on the path.

3.35 Krishna to Arjuna

śreyānsvadharmo viguṇaḥ paradharmātsvanuṣṭhitāt | svadharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ paradharmo bhayāvahaḥ ||

Better one's own duty, even without merit, than another's duty well performed. Better is death in one's own duty; another's duty brings fear.

Svadharma means one's own role, nature and responsibilities, never birth-based caste or exclusion. 'Death is better' is not about dying: anyone in crisis or thinking of self-harm should reach out now (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

Living your own path, imperfectly, is better than imitating someone else's life perfectly. Comparing yourself with others and copying their role brings insecurity, not peace.

Krishna says one's own duty, even imperfectly done, is better than another's duty done well; another's duty is fraught with danger.

3.36 Arjuna to Krishna

atha kena prayukto'yaṃ pāpaṃ carati pūruṣaḥ | anicchannapi vārṣṇeya balādiva niyojitaḥ ||

Arjuna said: Then by what is a person driven to commit wrong, even unwillingly, Varshneya, as if forced by some power?

Meaning today and context

Almost everyone knows the feeling: 'I knew it was wrong and did it anyway.' Arjuna names this struggle honestly, and Krishna's answer follows.

Arjuna asks the question at the heart of the chapter's close: what drives a person to do wrong, even against their will, as if forced?

3.37 Krishna to Arjuna

kāma eṣa krodha eṣa rajoguṇasamudbhavaḥ | mahāśano mahāpāpmā viddhyenamiha vairiṇam ||

The Blessed Lord said: It is desire, it is anger, born of the quality of rajas, all-devouring and greatly sinful. Know this to be the enemy here.

Feeling anger or desire is human and not shameful. If anger is putting you or others at risk, or craving has become an addiction, seek professional help alongside reflection.

Meaning today and context

Craving and anger are two faces of one force: wanting turns into anger when it is blocked. Seeing that the real adversary is inside, not the other person, is the first step to freedom.

Krishna answers: it is desire, it is anger, born of the quality of rajas; all-devouring and deeply harmful, know it as the enemy here.

3.38 Krishna to Arjuna

dhūmenāvriyate vahniryathādarśo malena ca | yatholbenāvṛto garbhastathā tenedamāvṛtam ||

As fire is covered by smoke, as a mirror by dust, as an embryo by the womb, so is this covered by desire.

Meaning today and context

Our good sense is not lost when craving takes over; it is covered, sometimes lightly, sometimes heavily. Clearing the haze lets it shine again.

Krishna gives three images of how desire covers understanding: as smoke covers fire, dust covers a mirror, and the womb covers an embryo.

3.39 Krishna to Arjuna

āvṛtaṃ jñānametena jñānino nityavairiṇā | kāmarūpeṇa kaunteya duṣpūreṇānalena ca ||

Knowledge is covered, son of Kunti, by this eternal enemy of the wise, in the form of desire, hard to satisfy, like fire.

Meaning today and context

Craving is like a fire: feeding it never fills it, it only grows. More scrolling, more buying, more drinking rarely brings the satisfaction it promises.

Krishna says knowledge is covered by this constant enemy of the wise, desire, which is like an insatiable fire.

3.40 Krishna to Arjuna

indriyāṇi mano buddhirasyādhiṣṭhānamucyate | etairvimohayatyeṣa jñānamāvṛtya dehinam ||

The senses, the mind and the intellect are said to be its seat. Through these it veils knowledge and deludes the embodied one.

Meaning today and context

Craving doesn't just tug at the senses; it gets into our thoughts and even our reasoning, so we argue ourselves into it. Knowing where it hides helps you catch it.

Krishna names where desire lives: the senses, the mind and the intellect are its seat; through them it veils knowledge and deludes the embodied self.

3.41 Krishna to Arjuna

tasmāttvamindriyāṇyādau niyamya bharatarṣabha | pāpmānaṃ prajahihyenaṃ jñānavijñānanāśanam ||

Therefore, best of the Bharatas, first control the senses, then cast off this evil thing that destroys knowledge and realisation.

For addiction or uncontrolled anger, self-discipline works best alongside professional or medical support.

Meaning today and context

Start where the struggle is most concrete: the senses and daily triggers. Managing those first creates the space to deal with the deeper craving.

Krishna gives the remedy: first bring the senses under control, then cast off this harmful desire that destroys knowledge and realisation.

3.42 Krishna to Arjuna

indriyāṇi parāṇyāhurindriyebhyaḥ paraṃ manaḥ | manasastu parā buddhiryo buddheḥ paratastu saḥ ||

The senses are said to be superior; the mind is superior to the senses; the intellect is superior to the mind; and what is beyond the intellect is That.

Meaning today and context

You are more than your impulses, more than your passing thoughts, even more than your judgements. Remembering that deeper ground gives strength to resist what pulls at you.

Krishna lays out a ladder of inner faculties: the senses are higher than the body, the mind higher than the senses, the intellect higher than the mind, and higher than the intellect is the Self.

3.43 Krishna to Arjuna

evaṃ buddheḥ paraṃ buddhvā saṃstabhyātmānamātmanā | jahi śatruṃ mahābāho kāmarūpaṃ durāsadam ||

Thus knowing what is beyond the intellect, steadying the self by the Self, mighty-armed one, slay this enemy in the form of desire, so hard to conquer.

'Slay the enemy' refers to inner desire, not any person. Overcoming addiction is not a test of willpower alone; support from others helps.

Meaning today and context

The real battle is inner. Grounded in who you truly are, you can steady your mind and overcome craving, even when it feels impossible.

Krishna closes chapter 3: knowing the Self beyond the intellect and steadying the self by the self, slay this enemy in the form of desire, so hard to overcome.
