Chapter 2

2.1 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

taṃ tathā kṛpayāviṣṭamaśrupūrṇākulekṣaṇam | viṣīdantamidaṃ vākyamuvāca madhusūdanaḥ ||

Sanjaya said: To him, thus overcome with pity, his eyes troubled and full of tears, despairing, Madhusudana spoke these words.

Meaning today and context

Even the strongest person can break down when duty and love collide. The teaching of the Gita begins at a moment of tears, not of strength.

Sanjaya describes Arjuna on the battlefield, overcome with pity and in tears, as Krishna begins to speak.

2.2 Krishna to Arjuna

kutastvā kaśmalamidaṃ viṣame samupasthitam | anāryajuṣṭamasvargyamakīrtikaramarjuna ||

The Blessed Lord said: Where has this faintness come upon you in this hour of crisis, Arjuna? It is not followed by the noble, it does not lead to heaven, and it brings dishonour.

Meaning today and context

When a crisis comes, panic can look like conscience. A good guide first asks where the paralysis is coming from before accepting it as wisdom.

Krishna's first words to the despairing Arjuna: he questions where this sudden faintness of heart has come from at such a critical moment.

2.3 Krishna to Arjuna

klaibyaṃ mā sma gamaḥ pārtha naitattvayyupapadyate | kṣudraṃ hṛdayadaurbalyaṃ tyaktvottiṣṭha paraṃtapa ||

Do not yield to unmanliness, Partha; it does not become you. Cast off this petty weakness of heart and arise, scorcher of foes.

Krishna is speaking to a trained warrior refusing his duty, not to someone in illness or depression. Never use this verse to shame a person who is struggling emotionally; acknowledge the pain first.

Meaning today and context

There are moments when what you need is not more analysis but the courage to get up and act. Weakness of heart is temporary; it does not define who you are.

Krishna urges Arjuna to shake off weakness of heart and stand up to face his responsibility.

2.4 Arjuna to Krishna

kathaṃ bhīṣmamahaṃ saṃkhye droṇaṃ ca madhusūdana | iṣubhiḥ pratiyotsyāmi pūjārhāvarisūdana ||

Arjuna said: How can I fight Bhishma and Drona in battle with arrows, Madhusudana? They are worthy of my worship, slayer of enemies.

Meaning today and context

The hardest conflicts are with people we love and respect: a parent, a mentor, a family elder. Arjuna's pain is real, and the Gita takes it seriously.

Arjuna explains his anguish: how can he fight Bhishma and Drona, elders and teachers he reveres?

2.5 Arjuna to Krishna

gurūnahatvā hi mahānubhāvāñśreyo bhoktuṃ bhaikṣamapīha loke | hatvārthakāmāṃstu gurūnihaiva bhuñjīya bhogānrudhirapradigdhān ||

Better to live in this world on alms than to slay these noble teachers. If I kill them, even though they are greedy for gain, I would enjoy here only pleasures smeared with blood.

These are Arjuna's words in confusion; Krishna goes on to answer them. Do not present this verse alone as the Gita's advice.

Meaning today and context

Sometimes a win feels worthless if it costs the relationships that matter. Arjuna voices a real question: is success worth it if it hurts those we owe so much?

Arjuna says he would rather live as a beggar than enjoy a kingdom stained with the blood of his teachers.

2.6 Arjuna to Krishna

na caitadvidmaḥ kataranno garīyo yadvā jayema yadi vā no jayeyuḥ | yāneva hatvā na jijīviṣāmaste'vasthitāḥ pramukhe dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ ||

Nor do we know which is better for us, that we conquer them or that they conquer us. The sons of Dhritarashtra stand before us, and having killed them we would not wish to live.

Meaning today and context

In real dilemmas every option seems to lead to loss. Admitting 'I don't know what's best' is honest, and it is the first step to clarity.

Arjuna admits he cannot even tell which outcome is better, winning or losing, since victory means killing his own kin.

2.7 Arjuna to Krishna

kārpaṇyadoṣopahatasvabhāvaḥ pṛcchāmi tvāṃ dharmasaṃmūḍhacetāḥ | yacchreyaḥ syānniścitaṃ brūhi tanme śiṣyaste'haṃ śādhi māṃ tvāṃ prapannam ||

My nature is overcome by the fault of helplessness, and my mind is confused about duty. I ask you: tell me for certain what is better. I am your disciple; teach me, for I have taken refuge in you.

Meaning today and context

Real change begins when we stop pretending to have the answer and sincerely ask for guidance. Naming your confusion honestly and turning to someone wise is strength, not defeat.

The turning point of the Gita: Arjuna admits his confusion and asks Krishna to teach him as a disciple who has taken refuge.

2.8 Arjuna to Krishna

na hi prapaśyāmi mamāpanudyādyacchokamucchoṣaṇamindriyāṇām | avāpya bhūmāvasapatnamṛddhaṃ rājyaṃ surāṇāmapi cādhipatyam ||

I do not see what could drive away this grief that dries up my senses, even if I were to gain an unrivalled, prosperous kingdom on earth, or even lordship over the gods.

Meaning today and context

Some pain cannot be fixed by money, status or success. Recognising that outer gains won't heal inner grief is what turns a person toward deeper answers.

Arjuna says no worldly gain, not even rule over the gods, could remove the grief that is drying up his senses.

2.9 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

evamuktvā hṛṣīkeśaṃ guḍākeśaḥ paraṃtapa | na yotsya iti govindamuktvā tūṣṇīṃ babhūva ha ||

Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus to Hrishikesha, Gudakesha, the scorcher of foes, said to Govinda, 'I will not fight,' and fell silent.

Meaning today and context

Sometimes, overwhelmed, we simply shut down. That silence is often where real listening begins.

Sanjaya reports that Arjuna, having spoken, declares 'I will not fight' and falls silent.

2.10 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

tamuvāca hṛṣīkeśaḥ prahasanniva bhārata | senayorubhayormadhye viṣīdantamidaṃ vacaḥ ||

Then, O Bharata, between the two armies, Hrishikesha, as if smiling, spoke these words to him who was despairing.

Meaning today and context

A calm, kind presence can steady someone in turmoil. Krishna's smile is not mockery; it shows the problem can be solved.

Between the two armies, Krishna, as if smiling, begins to speak to the grieving Arjuna.

2.11 Krishna to Arjuna

aśocyānanvaśocastvaṃ prajñāvādāṃśca bhāṣase | gatāsūnagatāsūṃśca nānuśocanti paṇḍitāḥ ||

The Blessed Lord said: You grieve for those who should not be grieved for, and yet you speak words of wisdom. The wise grieve neither for the dead nor for the living.

With someone who is grieving, acknowledge their loss first. The verse addresses Arjuna's confusion about duty; it is not a rule that mourning is wrong.

Meaning today and context

We can wrap fear and attachment in reasonable-sounding arguments. Krishna points past the arguments to the grief beneath them, and to a deeper truth about life and death that can steady us.

Krishna's teaching begins: Arjuna grieves for those who should not be grieved for, while speaking words that sound wise.

2.12 Krishna to Arjuna

na tvevāhaṃ jātu nāsaṃ na tvaṃ neme janādhipāḥ | na caiva na bhaviṣyāmaḥ sarve vayamataḥ param ||

Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor these kings; nor will any of us cease to exist hereafter.

Meaning today and context

The deepest part of a person is not born and does not end with the body. Seeing this can soften the terror of loss and give a steadier footing in grief.

Krishna begins teaching about the eternal Self: none of them ever ceased to exist, nor will they.

2.13 Krishna to Arjuna

dehino'sminyathā dehe kaumāraṃ yauvanaṃ jarā | tathā dehāntaraprāptirdhīrastatra na muhyati ||

Just as the embodied one passes through childhood, youth and old age in this body, so it passes to another body. The steady one is not deluded by this.

Meaning today and context

You have already been through many endings: childhood ended, youth ends, and yet you continue. Death is another change of that kind, and seeing it this way can ease fear of ageing and dying.

Krishna compares death to the stages of a single life: as the embodied one passes through childhood, youth and old age, it passes to another body.

2.14 Krishna to Arjuna

mātrāsparśāstu kaunteya śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkhadāḥ | āgamāpāyino'nityāstāṃstitikṣasva bhārata ||

Contacts of the senses with their objects, son of Kunti, give rise to cold and heat, pleasure and pain. They come and go and are impermanent; endure them, O Bharata.

Endurance here means steadiness of mind, not tolerating abuse or ignoring illness. Someone in danger or ill should seek help.

Meaning today and context

Good days and bad days, praise and criticism, comfort and discomfort all pass. Learning to bear them without being swept away is a skill that can be practised.

Krishna tells Arjuna that sensations of heat and cold, pleasure and pain come and go, and must be endured.

2.15 Krishna to Arjuna

yaṃ hi na vyathayantyete puruṣaṃ puruṣarṣabha | samaduḥkhasukhaṃ dhīraṃ so'mṛtatvāya kalpate ||

The wise person whom these do not disturb, O best of men, who is the same in pain and pleasure, is fit for immortality.

Meaning today and context

Inner freedom grows as we learn not to be thrown about by every success and setback. Evenness is not coldness; it is a deep stability from which we can act well.

Krishna says the person who is not disturbed by pleasure and pain becomes fit for immortality.

2.16 Krishna to Arjuna

nāsato vidyate bhāvo nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ | ubhayorapi dṛṣṭo'ntastvanayostattvadarśibhiḥ ||

The unreal has no being; the real never ceases to be. The truth about both has been seen by those who see the essence of things.

Meaning today and context

What changes and passes cannot be our final support; what is truly real does not disappear. Learning to tell them apart is the beginning of wisdom.

Krishna states a principle: the unreal has no being and the real never ceases to be. Seers of truth know the nature of both.

2.17 Krishna to Arjuna

avināśi tu tadviddhi yena sarvamidaṃ tatam | vināśamavyayasyāsya na kaścitkartumarhati ||

Know that to be indestructible by which all this is pervaded. No one can bring about the destruction of this imperishable one.

Meaning today and context

Beneath everything that rises and falls is something no loss can touch. Resting in that gives courage when everything else feels fragile.

Krishna describes the imperishable reality that pervades everything and cannot be destroyed.

2.18 Krishna to Arjuna

antavanta ime dehā nityasyoktāḥ śarīriṇaḥ | anāśino'prameyasya tasmādyudhyasva bhārata ||

These bodies of the eternal, indestructible and immeasurable embodied one are said to have an end. Therefore fight, O Bharata.

This is advice to a warrior in a just war after peace had failed. It never justifies violence or harming anyone today.

Meaning today and context

When we see that the deepest self is not at stake, fear loses its grip and we can do what our responsibility asks of us.

Krishna says bodies end but the embodied Self is eternal, and so Arjuna should fight.

2.19 Krishna to Arjuna

One who thinks this Self is a slayer, and one who thinks it is slain, both fail to understand. It does not slay, nor is it slain.

This is a statement about the Self, not permission to harm. Never present it as excusing violence or as making harm unimportant.

Meaning today and context

Our true self is not the doer or victim of what happens to the body. This is a teaching about the nature of the Self, meant to free us from fear of death.

Krishna says neither the one who thinks the Self kills nor the one who thinks it is killed understands it.

2.20 Krishna to Arjuna

na jāyate mriyate vā kadā cinnāyaṃ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ | ajo nityaḥ śāśvato'yaṃ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre ||

It is never born, nor does it ever die. Having come into being, it will not cease to be. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not slain when the body is slain.

Meaning today and context

At the time of a death, this verse offers a steady truth: the person we love is more than the body we have lost. It is often recited at funerals for this reason.

One of the best-known verses on the Self: it is never born and never dies, and is not killed when the body is killed.

2.21 Krishna to Arjuna

vedāvināśinaṃ nityaṃ ya enamajamavyayam | kathaṃ sa puruṣaḥ pārtha kaṃ ghātayati hanti kam ||

One who knows this to be indestructible, eternal, unborn and imperishable, Partha, how can that person kill anyone, or cause anyone to kill?

Not permission to harm. The verse is about the Self not being an agent, not about the morality of violence.

Meaning today and context

Knowing who we really are changes how we see every action. The wise do not think of themselves as the ultimate doer.

Krishna asks how one who knows the Self to be indestructible and unborn could think of killing or causing to kill.

2.22 Krishna to Arjuna

vāsāṃsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya navāni gṛhṇāti naro'parāṇi | tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇānyanyāni saṃyāti navāni dehī ||

As a person casts off worn-out garments and puts on new ones, so the embodied one casts off worn-out bodies and enters others that are new.

Meaning today and context

A simple, comforting image for loss: the body is like clothing, and the one who wore it continues. Many families find this verse helps them through a death.

Krishna's famous image: as a person discards worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, the embodied Self leaves worn-out bodies and takes new ones.

2.23 Krishna to Arjuna

nainaṃ chindanti śastrāṇi nainaṃ dahati pāvakaḥ | na cainaṃ kledayantyāpo na śoṣayati mārutaḥ ||

Weapons do not cut it, fire does not burn it, water does not wet it, and wind does not dry it.

For someone who is ill, offer this alongside, never instead of, medical care.

Meaning today and context

Whatever happens to the body, nothing can wound the innermost self. This verse is a source of courage in illness, danger and old age.

Krishna describes the Self as beyond harm by weapons, fire, water and wind.

2.24 Krishna to Arjuna

acchedyo'yamadāhyo'yamakledyo'śoṣya eva ca | nityaḥ sarvagataḥ sthāṇuracalo'yaṃ sanātanaḥ ||

It cannot be cut, cannot be burnt, cannot be wetted, nor dried. It is eternal, all-pervading, stable, unmoving and everlasting.

Meaning today and context

When life feels shaken, there is a part of us that stays unmoved. Contemplating it can bring calm in the middle of turmoil.

Krishna continues: the Self cannot be cut, burnt, wetted or dried; it is eternal, all-pervading, stable, unmoving and ancient.

2.25 Krishna to Arjuna

avyakto'yamacintyo'yamavikāryo'yamucyate | tasmādevaṃ viditvainaṃ nānuśocitumarhasi ||

It is said to be unmanifest, unthinkable and unchangeable. Therefore, knowing it to be so, you should not grieve.

Do not tell a grieving person they 'should not grieve'. Offer the understanding gently; acceptance takes time.

Meaning today and context

Understanding is meant to change how we feel. Once we see what a person truly is, grief can soften into acceptance.

Krishna concludes his description of the Self: it is unmanifest, unthinkable and unchanging, so Arjuna should not grieve.

2.26 Krishna to Arjuna

atha cainaṃ nityajātaṃ nityaṃ vā manyase mṛtam | tathāpi tvaṃ mahābāho nainaṃ śocitumarhasi ||

And even if you think of it as constantly being born and constantly dying, even then, mighty-armed one, you should not grieve for it.

Meaning today and context

Whatever your belief about what happens after death, endless grief does not help. The Gita meets people where they are and still offers a path to peace.

Krishna argues that even if Arjuna thinks the Self is constantly born and constantly dies, he still should not grieve.

2.27 Krishna to Arjuna

jātasya hi dhruvo mṛtyurdhruvaṃ janma mṛtasya ca | tasmādaparihārye'rthe na tvaṃ śocitumarhasi ||

For death is certain for one who is born, and birth is certain for one who dies. Therefore, over what cannot be avoided, you should not grieve.

Lead with empathy for a recent loss. Offer this verse as perspective over time, not as a reason to stop someone's tears.

Meaning today and context

Death is part of life's order, not a mistake. Accepting what cannot be changed frees our energy for what can: caring for the living and honouring the one who has gone.

Krishna states the certainty of death for all who are born, and of birth for all who die.

2.28 Krishna to Arjuna

avyaktādīni bhūtāni vyaktamadhyāni bhārata | avyaktanidhanānyeva tatra kā paridevanā ||

Beings are unmanifest in their beginning, manifest in their middle state, O Bharata, and unmanifest again in their end. What is there to lament in this?

Meaning today and context

Every life is a brief appearance between two unknowns. Seeing it this way can make us gentler about loss and more present with those still here.

Krishna observes that beings are unmanifest before birth and after death, and manifest only in between.

2.29 Krishna to Arjuna

āścaryavatpaśyati kaścidenamāścaryavadvadati tathaiva cānyaḥ | āścaryavaccainamanyaḥ śṛṇoti śrutvāpyenaṃ veda na caiva kaścit ||

One sees it as a wonder; another speaks of it as a wonder; another hears of it as a wonder; and even having heard of it, no one truly knows it.

Meaning today and context

The deepest questions are not solved by reading alone. Wonder, patience and practice are part of the path, and not understanding at first is normal.

Krishna speaks of how rare and wondrous understanding of the Self is.

2.30 Krishna to Arjuna

dehī nityamavadhyo'yaṃ dehe sarvasya bhārata | tasmātsarvāṇi bhūtāni na tvaṃ śocitumarhasi ||

The embodied one in the body of everyone is ever beyond harm, O Bharata. Therefore you should not grieve for any being.

As with other verses on grief, never use this to dismiss someone's sorrow.

Meaning today and context

The same unharmed Self lives in every being. This truth can carry us through loss and also make us see others with more respect.

Krishna sums up the teaching on the Self: the embodied one in every body can never be slain, so Arjuna should not grieve for any being.

2.31 Krishna to Arjuna

svadharmamapi cāvekṣya na vikampitumarhasi | dharmyāddhi yuddhācchreyo'nyatkṣatriyasya na vidyate ||

Considering your own duty as well, you should not waver. For a kshatriya there is nothing better than a war that is righteous.

Svadharma today should be read as one's own role and responsibilities, not as duty fixed by caste or birth. The verse concerns a just war, not violence in general.

Meaning today and context

Each of us has responsibilities that come with our role: as a parent, a doctor, a soldier, a leader. When that role calls for something hard but right, wavering helps no one.

Krishna turns from the Self to duty: as a warrior, Arjuna should not waver from a righteous war.

2.32 Krishna to Arjuna

yadṛcchayā copapannaṃ svargadvāramapāvṛtam | sukhinaḥ kṣatriyāḥ pārtha labhante yuddhamīdṛśam ||

Happy are the kshatriyas, Partha, who gain such a war, come of its own accord, an open door to heaven.

Specific to the warrior context of the epic. Never present it as glorifying war or violence.

Meaning today and context

In the epic's world, a just battle that one did not seek was a warrior's chance to fulfil his calling. The general point is that a hard duty that arrives unasked can be an opportunity.

Krishna tells Arjuna that a righteous war that comes unsought is, for warriors, an open door to heaven.

2.33 Krishna to Arjuna

atha cettvamimaṃ dharmyaṃ saṃgrāmaṃ na kariṣyasi | tataḥ svadharmaṃ kīrtiṃ ca hitvā pāpamavāpsyasi ||

But if you will not fight this righteous war, then, abandoning your own duty and your honour, you will incur sin.

Applies to genuine, rightful duties. It must not be used to pressure anyone into harmful or unsafe actions.

Meaning today and context

Walking away from a responsibility that is truly ours is itself a choice with consequences. Avoiding the hard path can also be a failure of duty.

Krishna warns that refusing a righteous duty means losing both one's duty and one's honour, and incurring wrong.

2.34 Krishna to Arjuna

akīrtiṃ cāpi bhūtāni kathayiṣyanti te'vyayām | saṃbhāvitasya cākīrtirmaraṇādatiricyate ||

People will speak of your dishonour for ever, and for one who has been honoured, dishonour is worse than death.

Never quote this to someone feeling shame, failure or thoughts of self-harm. Life always matters more than reputation; for a person in crisis, offer help lines such as Tele-MANAS (14416) first.

Meaning today and context

Krishna is appealing to a warrior's sense of honour, using an argument Arjuna's culture would feel. It reflects the epic's values, not a rule for valuing reputation over life.

Krishna says people will speak of Arjuna's dishonour for ever, and for an honoured man dishonour is worse than death.

2.35 Krishna to Arjuna

bhayādraṇāduparataṃ maṃsyante tvāṃ mahārathāḥ | yeṣāṃ ca tvaṃ bahumato bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam ||

The great chariot-warriors will think you withdrew from battle out of fear, and you, once highly esteemed by them, will be held in light regard.

Meaning today and context

Others will read our motives in their own way. Krishna points out that Arjuna's withdrawal would be seen as fear, not compassion.

Krishna says the great warriors will think Arjuna fled from fear, and he will lose their esteem.

2.36 Krishna to Arjuna

avācyavādāṃśca bahūnvadiṣyanti tavāhitāḥ | nindantastava sāmarthyaṃ tato duḥkhataraṃ nu kim ||

Your enemies will say many things that should not be said, deriding your ability. What could be more painful than that?

Not advice to live by others' opinions; see the Gita's teaching on evenness in praise and blame (12.18-19).

Meaning today and context

Fear of ridicule is real, and Krishna names it. Elsewhere the Gita teaches evenness in praise and blame; here the argument is aimed at Arjuna's warrior pride.

Krishna adds that Arjuna's enemies will mock his abilities with words that should not be spoken.

2.37 Krishna to Arjuna

hato vā prāpsyasi svargaṃ jitvā vā bhokṣyase mahīm | tasmāduttiṣṭha kaunteya yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ ||

If you are slain, you will attain heaven; if you conquer, you will enjoy the earth. Therefore arise, son of Kunti, resolved to fight.

Within the epic this concerns a warrior's death in battle. Never use it to romanticise death or risk to life.

Meaning today and context

When the path is right, both outcomes can be faced. Firm resolve comes from seeing that doing your duty is worthwhile whatever the result.

Krishna tells Arjuna that either way he gains: if killed he reaches heaven, if victorious he enjoys the earth. So he should rise, resolved to fight.

2.38 Krishna to Arjuna

sukhaduḥkhe same kṛtvā lābhālābhau jayājayau | tato yuddhāya yujyasva naivaṃ pāpamavāpsyasi ||

Treating alike pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat, then engage in battle. Thus you will not incur sin.

Meaning today and context

Do the right thing with a mind that is not hanging on the result. Whether you win or lose, the action done with an even mind leaves you clean and free.

Krishna introduces evenness: treat pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat alike, and then act. Acting this way, one incurs no sin.

2.39 Krishna to Arjuna

eṣā te'bhihitā sāṃkhye buddhiryoge tvimāṃ śṛṇu | buddhyā yukto yayā pārtha karmabandhaṃ prahāsyasi ||

This understanding has been taught to you according to Sankhya. Now hear it according to yoga: endowed with this understanding, Partha, you will cast off the bondage of action.

Meaning today and context

Knowing the truth is one step; living by it in daily work is another. The Gita now moves from understanding who we are to how we should act.

Krishna marks a transition: he has explained the wisdom of Sankhya (knowledge) and will now teach the wisdom of yoga (disciplined action).

2.40 Krishna to Arjuna

nehābhikramanāśo'sti pratyavāyo na vidyate | svalpamapyasya dharmasya trāyate mahato bhayāt ||

On this path no effort is lost and no adverse result arises. Even a little of this discipline protects one from great fear.

Meaning today and context

You don't need to be perfect to begin. Every small sincere effort at living mindfully counts, and none of it is wasted.

Krishna reassures that on this path no effort is wasted and no harm comes; even a little of it protects from great fear.

2.41 Krishna to Arjuna

vyavasāyātmikā buddhirekeha kurunandana | bahuśākhā hyanantāśca buddhayo'vyavasāyinām ||

Here the resolute understanding is single, joy of the Kurus. The thoughts of the irresolute are many-branched and endless.

Meaning today and context

A scattered mind chases a hundred goals and finds no peace. Choosing one clear direction and holding to it is where strength and progress come from.

Krishna contrasts the single, resolute understanding of the seeker with the endless, scattered thoughts of the irresolute.

2.42 Krishna to Arjuna

yāmimāṃ puṣpitāṃ vācaṃ pravadantyavipaścitaḥ | vedavādaratāḥ pārtha nānyadastīti vādinaḥ ||

Those without discernment, delighting in the letter of the Vedas and saying there is nothing else, speak flowery words, Partha.

This criticises ritual done only for selfish rewards; it is not a rejection of the Vedas themselves.

Meaning today and context

Beautiful promises of reward can distract us from what really matters. Religion used only to get things is not the deepest religion.

Krishna begins a critique of those who are attached to the flowery language of rituals performed for rewards.

2.43 Krishna to Arjuna

kāmātmānaḥ svargaparā janmakarmaphalapradām | kriyāviśeṣabahulāṃ bhogaiśvaryagatiṃ prati ||

Full of desire, intent on heaven, they speak words that offer rebirth as the fruit of action, filled with special rites aimed at pleasure and power.

Meaning today and context

When every action is a transaction for pleasure or power, we stay on the wheel of wanting. Desire-driven striving keeps us bound.

Krishna continues: such people, full of desire and aiming at heaven, prescribe many rites for pleasure and power.

2.44 Krishna to Arjuna

bhogaiśvaryaprasaktānāṃ tayāpahṛtacetasām | vyavasāyātmikā buddhiḥ samādhau na vidhīyate ||

For those attached to pleasure and power, whose minds are carried away by such words, the resolute understanding is not established in meditation.

Meaning today and context

A mind hooked on pleasure and status cannot settle. If you want a steady mind, notice what is pulling it away.

Krishna says those attached to pleasure and power, their minds carried away, cannot develop the resolute understanding needed for meditation.

2.45 Krishna to Arjuna

traiguṇyaviṣayā vedā nistraiguṇyo bhavārjuna | nirdvaṃdvo nityasattvastho niryogakṣema ātmavān ||

The Vedas deal with the three gunas. Be free of the three gunas, Arjuna, free from the pairs of opposites, ever established in purity, free from concern for acquiring and keeping, and centred in the Self.

This does not advise neglecting one's family's needs or finances; it is about inner freedom from anxious grasping.

Meaning today and context

So much anxiety comes from getting and holding on: money, status, security. Centring in your deeper self loosens that grip and lets you act from steadiness.

Krishna urges Arjuna to rise above the three gunas and the pairs of opposites, free from anxiety about getting and keeping, established in the Self.

2.46 Krishna to Arjuna

yāvānartha udapāne sarvataḥ saṃplutodake | tāvānsarveṣu vedeṣu brāhmaṇasya vijānataḥ ||

As much use as there is in a small well when there is water flooding everywhere, so much use is there in all the Vedas for the brahmana who knows.

Do not present this as dismissing the Vedas or practice; it describes the perspective of one who has realised.

Meaning today and context

When you find the source, the lesser means lose their pull. Fulfilment from within makes many outer pursuits unnecessary.

Krishna compares the knower of Brahman to someone with a great lake: the uses of a small well are all contained in it.

2.47 Krishna to Arjuna

karmaṇyevādhikāraste mā phaleṣu kadā cana | mā karmaphalaheturbhūrmā te saṅgo'stvakarmaṇi ||

Your right is to action alone, never to its fruits. Do not let the fruits of action be your motive, and do not be attached to inaction.

Not a reason to accept injustice silently. Doing one's work without craving does not mean one cannot ask for fair treatment.

Meaning today and context

Put your full effort into what you can control, your work, and loosen your grip on results you cannot control. This doesn't mean not caring about outcomes; it means not letting anxiety about them spoil the work, and not giving up action because results are uncertain.

The most quoted verse of the Gita: Krishna tells Arjuna that his right is to action alone, never to its fruits, and he should not be attached to inaction either.

2.48 Krishna to Arjuna

yogasthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṃ tyaktvā dhanaṃjaya | siddhyasiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṃ yoga ucyate ||

Established in yoga, perform actions, Dhananjaya, abandoning attachment, being even-minded in success and failure. Evenness of mind is called yoga.

Meaning today and context

Yoga is not only postures; it is staying balanced while you work. Give your best, then meet success and failure with the same steady mind.

Krishna defines yoga as evenness: act established in yoga, abandoning attachment, equal in success and failure.

2.49 Krishna to Arjuna

dūreṇa hyavaraṃ karma buddhiyogāddhanaṃjaya | buddhau śaraṇamanviccha kṛpaṇāḥ phalahetavaḥ ||

Action done for its results is far inferior to the yoga of understanding, Dhananjaya. Seek refuge in understanding; pitiable are those whose motive is the fruit.

Earning a living is legitimate. The verse is about the inner motive, not about refusing fair pay.

Meaning today and context

When we work only for the reward, we become small and anxious. Working from clear understanding and purpose is both freer and better.

Krishna says action done for results is far inferior to action done with an even understanding; those who act only for results are pitiable.

2.50 Krishna to Arjuna

buddhiyukto jahātīha ubhe sukṛtaduṣkṛte | tasmādyogāya yujyasva yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam ||

One united with understanding casts off here both good and evil deeds. Therefore devote yourself to yoga; yoga is skill in action.

Meaning today and context

Excellence in work is not only technical skill; it is acting with a clear, balanced mind that doesn't get trapped by its own actions. That inner skill is what yoga means here.

Krishna says one who is united with this understanding leaves behind both good and bad deeds; therefore devote yourself to yoga, which is skill in action.

2.51 Krishna to Arjuna

karmajaṃ buddhiyuktā hi phalaṃ tyaktvā manīṣiṇaḥ | janmabandhavinirmuktāḥ padaṃ gacchantyanāmayam ||

The wise, united with understanding, abandon the fruit born of action, and, freed from the bondage of birth, go to the state beyond all suffering.

Meaning today and context

Letting go of the craving for results is not a loss; it is the path to a freedom that no outcome can give.

Krishna says the wise, giving up the fruits of action, are freed from the bondage of birth and reach the state beyond sorrow.

2.52 Krishna to Arjuna

yadā te mohakalilaṃ buddhirvyatitariṣyati | tadā gantāsi nirvedaṃ śrotavyasya śrutasya ca ||

When your understanding crosses beyond the mire of delusion, then you will become indifferent to what has been heard and what is yet to be heard.

Meaning today and context

There comes a point where more information, more advice and more opinions stop helping. Clarity comes when confusion clears from within.

Krishna says when the understanding crosses the mire of delusion, one becomes indifferent to what has been heard and what is yet to be heard.

2.53 Krishna to Arjuna

śrutivipratipannā te yadā sthāsyati niścalā | samādhāvacalā buddhistadā yogamavāpsyasi ||

When your understanding, bewildered by conflicting teachings, stands firm and unmoving in meditation, then you will attain yoga.

Meaning today and context

Many voices pull us in different directions. Stability comes when the mind settles inwardly and stops being tossed about by every new opinion.

Krishna says when Arjuna's understanding, confused by conflicting teachings, stands firm in meditation, he will attain yoga.

2.54 Arjuna to Krishna

sthitaprajñasya kā bhāṣā samādhisthasya keśava | sthitadhīḥ kiṃ prabhāṣeta kimāsīta vrajeta kim ||

Arjuna said: What is the description of one of steady wisdom, who is established in meditation, Keshava? How does one of steady mind speak, how do they sit, how do they walk?

Meaning today and context

Arjuna asks a practical question: what does a wise person actually look like in daily life? Inner wisdom should show in how we speak and behave.

Arjuna asks Krishna to describe the person of steady wisdom: how such a person speaks, sits and walks.

2.55 Krishna to Arjuna

prajahāti yadā kāmānsarvānpārtha manogatān | ātmanyevātmanā tuṣṭaḥ sthitaprajñastadocyate ||

The Blessed Lord said: When one gives up all desires that arise in the mind, Partha, and is content in the Self by the Self, then one is said to be of steady wisdom.

Meaning today and context

Lasting contentment does not come from fulfilling every wish but from a fullness within that doesn't depend on getting things.

Krishna's first description of the person of steady wisdom: one who gives up all desires of the mind and is content in the Self.

2.56 Krishna to Arjuna

duḥkheṣvanudvignamanāḥ sukheṣu vigataspṛhaḥ | vītarāgabhayakrodhaḥ sthitadhīrmunirucyate ||

One whose mind is not disturbed in sorrow, who has no craving for pleasures, who is free from passion, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady mind.

Meaning today and context

Emotional maturity means not being knocked over by bad news or hooked by good news, and not being run by attachment, fear or anger.

Krishna continues: the sage of steady mind is not shaken by sorrow, does not crave pleasure, and is free from passion, fear and anger.

2.57 Krishna to Arjuna

yaḥ sarvatrānabhisnehastattatprāpya śubhāśubham | nābhinandati na dveṣṭi tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā ||

One who is without attachment everywhere, who, meeting with good or bad, neither rejoices nor hates, that person's wisdom is firmly established.

Meaning today and context

Not celebrating wildly at good news or hating what goes wrong keeps the mind clear. Steadiness lets us see situations as they are.

Krishna: one without attachment anywhere, who neither rejoices at good nor hates bad, has wisdom that is established.

2.58 Krishna to Arjuna

yadā saṃharate cāyaṃ kūrmo'ṅgānīva sarvaśaḥ | indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyastasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā ||

When one completely withdraws the senses from their objects, as a tortoise draws in its limbs, that person's wisdom is firmly established.

Meaning today and context

Like a tortoise pulling into its shell, we can learn to withdraw attention from constant stimulation: phones, noise, cravings. Being able to turn the senses inward is a skill that steadies the mind.

Krishna uses the image of the tortoise: one who withdraws the senses from their objects as a tortoise draws in its limbs has steady wisdom.

2.59 Krishna to Arjuna

viṣayā vinivartante nirāhārasya dehinaḥ | rasavarjaṃ raso'pyasya paraṃ dṛṣṭvā nivartate ||

Objects fall away from the embodied one who abstains from them, but the taste for them remains. Even the taste departs when the Supreme is seen.

Not advice to fast or restrict food. Anyone struggling with eating or addiction should also seek professional help.

Meaning today and context

Forcing yourself to stay away from something doesn't remove the craving. Lasting change comes when something deeper and more fulfilling takes its place.

Krishna observes that objects fall away from one who abstains, but the taste for them remains; even the taste goes when the Supreme is seen.

2.60 Krishna to Arjuna

yatato hyapi kaunteya puruṣasya vipaścitaḥ | indriyāṇi pramāthīni haranti prasabhaṃ manaḥ ||

The turbulent senses, son of Kunti, forcibly carry away the mind even of a wise person who is striving.

Meaning today and context

Slipping up doesn't mean you are weak or bad; even wise people struggle with their senses. It is a reason for vigilance and compassion toward yourself, not despair.

Krishna warns that the turbulent senses can forcibly carry away the mind even of a wise person who is striving.

2.61 Krishna to Arjuna

tāni sarvāṇi saṃyamya yukta āsīta matparaḥ | vaśe hi yasyendriyāṇi tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā ||

Restraining all of them, one should sit disciplined, intent on me. For one whose senses are under control, wisdom is firmly established.

Meaning today and context

Self-control works best with a higher focus, not by willpower alone. Fixing the mind on the divine, or on a deeper purpose, makes restraint natural.

Krishna says to restrain all the senses and sit focused on him; one whose senses are under control has steady wisdom.

2.62 Krishna to Arjuna

dhyāyato viṣayānpuṃsaḥ saṅgasteṣūpajāyate | saṅgātsaṃjāyate kāmaḥ kāmātkrodho'bhijāyate ||

When a person dwells on objects, attachment to them arises. From attachment, desire is born; from desire, anger arises.

Meaning today and context

Anger often starts long before the outburst, with what we keep thinking about. Noticing the early link, the repeated dwelling, is where we can break the chain.

The first half of the famous chain of ruin: dwelling on objects leads to attachment, attachment to desire, and desire to anger.

2.63 Krishna to Arjuna

krodhādbhavati saṃmohaḥ saṃmohātsmṛtivibhramaḥ | smṛtibhraṃśādbuddhināśo buddhināśātpraṇaśyati ||

From anger comes delusion; from delusion, confusion of memory; from confusion of memory, the loss of understanding; and from loss of understanding, one is ruined.

Meaning today and context

In anger we stop thinking clearly, forget what we value and know, and make choices we regret. Knowing this sequence lets you pause before the damage is done.

The second half of the chain: anger leads to delusion, then loss of memory, then destruction of understanding, and so to ruin.

2.64 Krishna to Arjuna

rāgadveṣaviyuktaistu viṣayānindriyaiścaran | ātmavaśyairvidheyātmā prasādamadhigacchati ||

But one who moves among objects with senses free from attraction and aversion, under the control of the self, being self-disciplined, attains serenity.

Meaning today and context

You don't have to run away from the world. You can live, work and enjoy life, as long as likes and dislikes don't drive you. That freedom brings a deep calm.

The way out of the chain: one who moves among objects with senses free from attraction and aversion, under self-control, attains serenity.

2.65 Krishna to Arjuna

prasāde sarvaduḥkhānāṃ hānirasyopajāyate | prasannacetaso hyāśu buddhiḥ paryavatiṣṭhate ||

In serenity, all sorrows come to an end. For the one whose mind is serene, understanding soon becomes firmly established.

Meaning today and context

A calm mind sees clearly and decides well. Inner peace is not a luxury; it is the foundation of good judgement and lasting relief from suffering.

Krishna says that in serenity all sorrows end, and the understanding of one with a calm mind quickly becomes steady.

2.66 Krishna to Arjuna

nāsti buddhirayuktasya na cāyuktasya bhāvanā | na cābhāvayataḥ śāntiraśāntasya kutaḥ sukham ||

There is no understanding for the undisciplined, nor is there contemplation for the undisciplined. Without contemplation there is no peace, and for one without peace, where is happiness?

Meaning today and context

Happiness depends on peace, peace on a reflective inner life, and that on some self-discipline. Chasing happiness directly without these rarely works.

Krishna says the undisciplined have no understanding or meditation; without meditation there is no peace, and without peace, no happiness.

2.67 Krishna to Arjuna

indriyāṇāṃ hi caratāṃ yanmano'nuvidhīyate | tadasya harati prajñāṃ vāyurnāvamivāmbhasi ||

When the mind follows the wandering senses, it carries away one's wisdom, as the wind carries away a boat on the water.

Meaning today and context

Just one unchecked distraction can pull you off course, like a gust of wind on a small boat. Guarding attention protects your judgement.

Krishna compares a mind that follows the wandering senses to a boat carried away by wind on water.

2.68 Krishna to Arjuna

tasmādyasya mahābāho nigṛhītāni sarvaśaḥ | indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyastasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā ||

Therefore, mighty-armed one, the one whose senses are completely restrained from their objects, that person's wisdom is firmly established.

Meaning today and context

Steady wisdom and self-mastery go together. The more we govern our attention and impulses, the clearer and calmer the mind becomes.

Krishna concludes: the one whose senses are completely restrained from their objects has steady wisdom.

2.69 Krishna to Arjuna

yā niśā sarvabhūtānāṃ tasyāṃ jāgarti saṃyamī | yasyāṃ jāgrati bhūtāni sā niśā paśyato muneḥ ||

What is night for all beings, in that the self-controlled one is awake. That in which beings are awake is night for the sage who sees.

Meaning today and context

What the world chases may mean little to the wise, and what the wise value may seem invisible to the world. Your values may differ from those around you, and that is fine.

Krishna contrasts the sage and ordinary beings: what is night for all beings, the self-controlled one is awake in; what they are awake to is night for the sage.

2.70 Krishna to Arjuna

As waters enter the ocean, which is ever being filled yet remains still and unmoved, so one into whom all desires enter attains peace, not the one who craves desires.

Meaning today and context

Desires will keep arriving like rivers. Peace is not having none, but being deep and full enough that they don't overflow you.

Krishna's image of the ocean: as rivers flow into the full and unmoving ocean, desires enter the steady sage without disturbing him; such a person attains peace.

2.71 Krishna to Arjuna

vihāya kāmānyaḥ sarvānpumāṃścarati niḥspṛhaḥ | nirmamo nirahaṃkāraḥ sa śāntimadhigacchati ||

The person who abandons all desires and moves about free from longing, without the sense of 'mine' and without ego, attains peace.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering comes from 'mine' and 'I': my status, my things, my way. Loosening these is where peace begins.

Krishna says the one who abandons all desires and lives free from longing, without 'mine' and without ego, attains peace.

2.72 Krishna to Arjuna

eṣā brāhmī sthitiḥ pārtha naināṃ prāpya vimuhyati | sthitvāsyāmantakāle'pi brahmanirvāṇamṛcchati ||

This is the Brahmic state, Partha. Having attained it, one is not deluded. Abiding in it even at the end of life, one attains the bliss of Brahman.

Meaning today and context

It is never too late. Even at the end of life, settling into this calm, clear state brings freedom. And once reached, confusion does not return.

Krishna concludes chapter 2: this is the state of Brahman; reaching it one is not deluded, and abiding in it even at the time of death, one attains liberation.
